This past week when I went to Weslaco, I did something different after I stopped at the Weslaco Museum (by the way, the museum is a must go to spot) – I checked for historical landmarks in the area. I had been told about a few places I should go by, but by searching for historical landmarks in the area, it opened my eyes to places I would not have seen otherwise. And then, by going to these places I was able to see more of Weslaco, it’s architecture, and culture. If you have not seen any of my city stories where I do talk about some historical sites – in just about every one – visit https://www.thc. texas.gov/ to see what is near you. You will not be disappointed in the sites you will see. Even if it is just a marker in an empty spot, there is history on that marker that you would otherwise not know. Weslaco, more than a tower When going into Weslaco, there is one prominent structure that kind of calls out and is noticed by all that travel down South Texas Blvd. or Business 83 – El Tinaco Tower. The tower stands at 100 feet tall on six concrete pillars. Upon its completion in 1941, the tower was proclaimed a marvel of modern construction. It received a Texas Historical Landmark designation in 1982. But, the tower isn’t the only thing interesting about the City of Weslaco. On a recent visit, I was able to peruse the museum and drive through downtown and enjoy the architecture and feel of the community. It is definitely a downtown I would not mind walking around while peeking into the store fronts. An intriguing building was the beautiful Fire Department and old

and 5th Street (120 E. 5th St.). The fire station is located on part of a Spanish land grant known as Llano Grande. It features some great architecture and additions to the buildings, including the city hall, that have kept that colonial Spanish architecture. The City of Weslaco was founded in 1919 and the name was derived from the W.E. Stewart Land Company – who bought 30,000 acres for $90 an acre in 1917. The town site was then sold to Ed. C. Couch, Dan R. Couch, R. C. Couch, and R. L. Reeves who planned to develop the site. Some of the original partners backed out of the venture, and even nearby communities discouraged people from settling in the area before the sale of lots was held. See WESLACO pg. 16

Weslaco’s parks and outdoors

The Rio Grande Valley is home to the World Birding Center and has several locations throughout the Valley. Weslaco features one location, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and a nature center located in the middle of downtown, Frontera Audubon. Estero Llano Grande State Park is the geographic center of the World Birding Center network. The park attracts a spectacular array of South Texas wildlife with its varied landscape of shallow lake, woodlands and thorn forest. Visitors will enjoy exploring the 230 plus-acre refuge. Water is the magic ingredient for attracting wildlife and the park offers the largest wetlands environment in the World Birding Center network. A shallow lake, fringed with marsh cane, is ac- Valley Nature Center tually part of the Arroyo Colorado. Classic Rio Grande woodlands add variety to the park that already boasts a well-deserved birding reputation. A former agriculture field was transformed in wetlands, with an island just right for a secure nesting site. With a reputation as a can’t miss birding destination, in late summer, when water is at a premium, hundreds of waders and shorebirds flock to the park. Sightings have included the endangered Wood Stork, along with colorful coastal species like the Roseate Spoonbill and Ibis. Migrating waterfowl also make a beeline for the park’s narrow, shallow lake. Elsewhere in the park, woodland and thorn scrub harbor all the must-

see Valley specialties such as the Groove-billed Ani and Altamira Oriole. Adding spice to this mix, visitors may even spot rare Red-crowned Parrots and Green Parakeets. Call the park, or visit their website, for hours of operation. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park is located at 3301 S. International Blvd. (FM 1015). A little unexpected is Frontera Audubon. Frontera Audubon is a 15-acre nature preserve in the heart of the city. It provides a haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife that thrive among the native habitats of its Tamaulipan Thornscrub forest, orchard butterfly garden, wetlands and ponds. Frontera Audubon houses a visitors’ center and the Texas Historic Landmark, the Skaggs House, a Spanish Mediterranean style house built in 1917. The house was built for early Weslaco residents, C.L. “Lester” and Florence R. Skaggs who were bankers and citrus growers. Bebe Skaggs James, daughter of Lester and Florence Skaggs, donated the property to Frontera Audubon in 1992 for conservation and preservation. A lot of work has been done in recent years to get the house back to its original form. The Frontera Audubon has been a non-profit organization since the late 1970s and has been operating from its current location since 2000. More about Frontera Audubon can be found at their website, https://fronteraaudubon.org/. The park is located at 1101 S. Texas Blvd.

Calling Valley birders

The Frontera Birdathon 2021 will look a little different this year. The park is looking for those who want to support Frontera Audubon in Weslaco by doing what you love – getting out and watching birds. Individuals, pairs or groups of people from the same household, or up to four-person team traveling in different vehicles, can form a Birdathon entry and submit a bird list of species. The birds need

to be seen from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset on any day between now (actually started January 31) and February 6th. The park asks that your team pay a minimum of $25 as an entry fee. You will receive a form to solicit sponsorships and the minimum can be paid by a sponsor or yourself. Fronter Audubon, of course, would like you to raise as much as possible. If you have friends, relatives, co-workers, neighbors, etc. that will pledge a set amount or an amount per species seen, that would be great. Teams have

brought in over $1,000 in the past, but the park is grateful for the $25 individual/teams. There is one bonus this year. If your team sees up to 75 species, each team member will receive a Frontera pin or patch. If you log in 76-100 species, you will each receive an Al-Ka-Line tac or earrings of your choice. All those 101 species or over will receive a special edition Birdathon 2021 coffee mug. Contact Frontera Audubon for additional information at (956) 9683275.

Hardwood Heroes presentation at MOSTH

The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) welcomes Dr. Greg Selber to present two new books on high school basketball during the Sunday Speaker Series Online presentation, “Little Brother Gets His Due: High School Basketball in the Valley, 1914-2014,” at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7 on Facebook Live. Selber, a historian on Rio Grande Valley sports, released two books, “Hardwood Heroes: The History of High School Basketball in the Rio Grande Valley Vols. 1 & 2,” which were published by the Rio Grande Greg Selber Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Copies are available for purchase at the Museum Store. High school football is arguably the Rio Grande Valley’s favorite sport, but basketball comes close. The sport was introduced to the Valley during a time of racial tension in the early 1900s. According to SelberSports.com, Selber focuses on high school basketball starting with “the formative stages of the game, including on one hand the prominent pioneers—players, coaches, promoters—who made the game go, but on the other, the cultural and socio-political context of the times.” The books range from 1913-1914 to 2014, and examine the impact of race, economics, and technology on the sport, among other factors. Selber began his work as a sports journalist in the Rio Grande Valley in 1989. He is a recognized author, journalist and communication professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is the author of “Border Ball: The History of High School Football in the Rio Grande Valley (2008)” and “Bronc Ball: The History of College Basketball at Pan American (2013).” Selber was inducted into

the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in June 2020 and was the recipient of the Putt Powell Award in Journalism as the most outstanding high school sports journalist in the state of Texas in 2011. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory.org. About Museum of South Texas History The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century. During the Audubon Society’s 119th national Christmas Bird Count, a Blue Mockingbird was spotted at the river bend of the Rio Grande. There have only been a few sightings of this dazzling bird in the United States. Visitors hope this extraordinary visitor will make its appearance again. W h i l e COVID-19 may have prevented Blue Mockingbird getting together for in-person events, nothing can stop participants from celebrating the talents of local artists and the incredible biodiversity of the local “Birds of the Brush.” The 9th annual art event is designed to showcase how vibrant our Rio Grande ecosystem attracts hundreds of species of dazzling

birds, some of which migrate from as far away as Canada and the Central America tropics. Student artwork will be featured on the Laredo Birding Festival’s online art gallery. Amateur and professional artwork will be on display in the online art gallery. Deadline for submission is Friday, February 5. What glorious weather we are having...not too hot, not too cold...it is just right. Yep, it is just right for being outdoors and enjoying our beautiful South Texas. The gurus of the travel industry say that the plus side of the pandemic has brought more and more travelers into eco-tourism and enjoying the great outdoors. When planning a tour - especially when walking and the outdoors is involved, it is always wise to check the weather history of the area you are exploring. To enjoy walking, optimum temperature should be in the upper sixties and not more than the mid-seventies. You will not tire as easily while walking if you plan to travel with those average temperatures. So, let's enjoy the outdoors of our beautiful Rio Grande Valley and our beautiful weather. When you go exploring whether by car, bus, train, or plane, eventually you will be walking to get the real feel of what you are experiencing. So, most all tours that are offered will include some walking. Of course, along with checking temperatures, it is a good idea to check the altitude especially if you are prone to altitude sickness or have a heart condition. Certainly, in the Rio Grande Valley we really don't need to worry about the altitude. Recently, calls have been coming in asking about the Farm Tour and the King Ranch Farm Tour. First, let us look at the Farm Tour. Our area is a virtual garden with the possibility of producing three crops per year although most farmers will produce only two. The area could hardly produce one good crop if we could not irrigate. So that is how the Farm Tour begins - with a visit to a District Irrigation Headquarters.

Now our climate is not only attractive to Winter Texans - it also attracts bugs. Next in importance then is crop dusting in an effort to control some of these bugs. Important also is talking to a real farmer who has experienced the ups and downs of farming with too little rainfall and too much rainfall. He can tell you yields and property values and answer most all the other questions you might have. All of this and more is included in the regular Farm Tour. So, what is the King Ranch Farm Tour? And how is it different? For starters, some of the difference is in the scale of farming done on the properties owned by King Ranch. Much of the 825 thousand acres of the King Ranch located in South Texas is dedicated to ranching. But on the four divisions, at least one of those divisions is dedicated to farming. Can you imagine furrows that are three miles long? Or checking the temperature of the soil to see when is the best time to plant? Or a state-of-the-art cotton gin and huge buildings to store the grain that is harvested? The King Ranch Farm Tour also includes a visit to the Feed Lot where cattle are fattened before being sold for slaughter. Few people realize that King Ranch properties are scattered all over the southern United States. These properties also produce pecans and citrus along with the cotton and grain produced in South Texas. Both the Farm Tour and the King Ranch Farm Tour require some walking but certainly in our flat, lowland country, the walks are not strenuous. Come on out and enjoy the outdoors and the agreeable climate in South Texas.

Sitting in the confines of the buffet restaurant king brought a sense of normalcy back to my senses as the wide variety of foods – served cafeteria style these days due to the COVID-19 pandemic – and the multiple aromas wafted through the air. I proudly claimed (to myself, of course) that I was the first customer of the day to see this veritable pot 'o gold (well, buffet) at the end of the rainbow. I have been a Golden Corral fan for years. I was talking to the manager Danny and reminiscing all the way back to when they added one of their staples to the menu – the bourbon street chicken. It was still there, still amazingly fresh, and absolutely delicious. The seemingly endless buffet that runs from one end of the establishment to the other, looked extremely fresh, with the reds, greens, and other bright, crisp colors of the salad bar, to the browns of the meat and potatoes section to the bright, cartoon-like tints of the dessert bar. I sat near that end of the restaurant and I must admit, the carrot cake and the cheesecake kept calling my name. There were also a variety of soups to try. There is something here for everyone, even the pickiest of eaters. Before I even attempted a conversation with the sweet sugary section, I had to hit all my favorites – which included the pot roast, an amazingly thick and moist cheeseburger on a soft buttered bun (with grilled onions and jalapenos), green bean casserole (need to get my healthy portion of veggies), barbecued chicken, pulled pork....Whoa, maybe I should stop...pizza, pork chop and macaroni and cheese. If you eat everything, can they all be favorites? Consistency in taste is key to building a following and you undeniably know what you are getting every time you dig into your favorites here. The massive number of tastes fascinated my taste buds and my brain slowly slid into food coma mode. As I waved goodbye to the multitude of food, Danny asked me what I had for dessert. I told him that I was trying to stay off sugar and sweet. But, since the cheesecake AND carrot cake knew my name, well....

ly. You can usually purchase all the items at Dollar Tree for $25-$30. Last season the park donated to 10 families. This season the park increased the donations and were able to donate enough food for 22 families. Residents also included coats, jackets, and blankets. As it usually takes two bags per family, and I was shooting for 25 families, a local company donated 50 bags for us to use for the charity drive. Plenty of bags were donated, so the park had enough for many other items. The park also had two large, decorated boxes in the activity hall for donations of toys, stuffed animals, school supplies and toiletries. Contact for the Donna area was Henry Satterfield of JJ Construction, for the donations. Henry does a lot of renovation work in the park and is highly recommended. Henry is associated with “Brothers in Christ” and

he gladly picked up all the food and toy donations. It took two pick-up truck loads to gather it all. On Sunday, December 20 several park residents followed Henry and his many volunteers, pick-up trucks, and flat bed trailer filled to capacity, to the colonia neighborhoods he had determined would be the recipients of the donations. He also received many toy and blanket donations from other businesses, but Bit-OHeaven Resort was the only business to provide food donations. It was really wonderful to see the kids run out to see Santa as he handed out age appropriate unwrapped toys and food bags to the families. This season the park had a great successful event. We thank all our Bit-O-Heaven family for being so generous to help those in need. Next season, the park will start over again and hopefully beat our record this season.

From the Cheap Seats Olympics, chili, and cornbread

Sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding, karate, baseball, and softball are all new sports for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics (baseball and softball making a return). Maybe the International Olympics Committee should consider chili and cornbread cookoffs as well for future games. With McAllen Mobile Park giving a super-small sampling, if the results are anywhere near as tasty, it will surely be a hit and a long-standing event where winners will fiercely battle for the gold medal. McAllen Mobile Park kicked off its annual Olympics with cornbread and chili competitions – two separate events being held at the same time (and it made a lot of sense – come on, chili and cornbread…a perfect com-

bination). Like those other “questionable” sports being added to the Tokyo games, cornbread and chili were newcomers to the local Winter Texan park. Eight park residents tackled the chili event, while seven cornbread entrants were up in front of their stoves early that morning to beat the deadline and place their creations on tables set up outside (and socially distanced) for the judges, then for park residents. The Olympics, which usually span about eight weeks with a wide variety of games and competitions – with social distancing in mind this year – were forced to be postponed for the time being. Still, the cookoff was a delightful way to kick off the event, have people

little bit of spice is good and as long as it tastes good, that’s all that matters.” At the end of the day, Minnesota native Debbie Sheets claimed first place after the judges had to use their tie-breaking formula to decide the winner. (I would have just eaten more). Diane Behrens claimed she was not a professional cook after winning the cornbread category with her sweet cornbread entry. “We used to have this restaurant in Kansas City that made sweet cornbread, so this is their recipe,” she said, adding that she was working all morning to prepare it on time and not miss the deadline. “For the park to be able to organize this is really, really great. Everyone needs to be able to do something and this got everyone to come out and socialize – at a distance with our masks.” Behrens may be socializing again this weekend. The Kansas City native is rooting for her beloved Chiefs to win their second straight Super Bowl on Sunday against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “Of course, I’m rooting for the Chiefs,” she said. “Go Chiefs.”

gather and taste some pretty amazing recipes. It was a much-needed distraction to a Winter Texan season that has been dominated and stifled by the world wide corona virus pandemic. None of the chilis reached a heat that would melt one’s face or send volcanic lava out of their ears, something that is more common than not in many Valley chilis. Consistencies and ingredients were wide ranging and one contestant “went off the board,” and created a white chicken chili. “That one took me by surprise,” said Joe Shelton who, along with his wife Shirley, were two of the judges for the chili portion. “That one was kind of the farthest out – I wasn’t expecting that for a chili.” The Sheltons, who live in Minnesota during their non-McAllen Mobile months, agreed that the biggest and most critical element of chili is the flavor. Joe added that he should not be even judging the competition due to his diet. “I’m on a seafood diet,” he said, straight faced. “I see food, and I eat it.” “It doesn’t matter what it looks like,” Shirley said, following the comedy routine of her husband, who is one of the games coordinators. “A

On December 10, 1919, the sale was held. Lots ranged from $50 to $400 and all individuals had to do was choose a lot and camp out on it until the day of sale. At the same time, the city offered free lots to representatives of Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist and Christian denominations. And, as they say, the rest is history. It was a diamond in the rough for agriculture, and landowners and investors saw the potential of the land. When irrigation and trains came to the area, the land prospered even more. You can drive around the more remote areas of the city – and the Valley – and see crops for miles. The 1015 Onion was developed in Weslaco. It was named such by its suggested planting date of October 15th. The city celebrates the development of the 1015 onion with an Onion Fest. The event is usually celebrated with an onion eating contest, food, and entertainment. Also, much like the rest of the Valley, several churches in the area have been around almost as long as the town has been called Weslaco. At 600 S. Kansas Avenue you will find the First Baptist Church of

Weslaco. Visiting Evangelists from the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board encouraged area Baptists to organize a church in Weslaco in 1921. The congregation first met at Stephen F. Austin School before moving into its own building. Many of its beginning members were community leaders who were vital to the development of the city. Another church in the area is the First Christian Church at 205 W. 6th St. This church, organized with 44 charter members, has remained on its original site since December 16, 1921. And still another church to visit is the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The Weslaco Independent School District was formed in 1921. They had previously been a part of Donna ISD but petitioned the state to separate and be their own entity. The Weslaco High School building that holds the historic landmark, sits at 503 E. 6th St. The one-story building features a raised basement built of reinforced concrete and hollow tile, faced with dark Butler brick and lighter bands near the roofline. The building, and the adjacent Weslaco Junior High, were threatened with demolition before being rehabilitated in 2006.

Another building with beautiful architecture is the Villa de Cortez. This building is located at South Texas Blvd and Bus. 83. If you only have the oppor- Villa de Cortez tunity to make one stop while visiting or driving through Weslaco, stop by the museum. The Weslaco Museum has one floor that features rotating exhibits. The other floor is like taking a step back in time. Sheila Shidler, executive director, loves to give guided tours when she has time and can tell you about each exhibit and the importance it plays in the history of Weslaco. You will learn about the city’s development, agriculture history, its product costume regalia, and more. Currently on the first floor is the

history of Fort Brown and a residents’ post card collection. The post card collection adds a bit of fun and whimsy and features post cards from the entire Valley and other areas. There is also a military area, paying tribute to those in the area that have served. Weslaco is the proud home of Harlon Block, who served in the Marines. Block was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. In 1944, he was one of the Marines who raised the second U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. The photo is a very well-known photo, and the museum features a painting of it in the museum. The museum is located at 500 South Texas Blvd. and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. TX VLB initiates operation “Share the Love”

AUSTIN - The Texas Veterans Land Board recently announced a statewide campaign to bring Valentine’s Day love to the nearly 1,000 Veterans residing in state-ran nursing homes. The mission is to bring awareness from Texans that although the Veterans have had to isolate for nearly a year due to COVID-19, they are not forgotten by their nearby communities. “The VLB team is committed to keeping our Veterans’ safety at the forefront of our minds during this pandemic but doing so certainly does not mean we can’t share our love for them this Valentine’s Day,” said Texas Veteran Land Board Chairman George P. Bush. “Our goal is to ensure every Veteran residing in our fa-

cilities receives some love from their nearby communities and we are eager to see the response from this effort. I challenge every community across Texas to shower our Veterans with love this Valentine’s Day and help us exceed our goal of 1,000 cards.” Any Texan interested in sharing a Valentine to a Veteran can mail it to a home of their choosing. The VLB asks that mailed cards be postmarked no later than February 10 and include "Valentines for Vets" on the mailing address. You can send to the local Veterans home at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home, 301 East Yuma Avenue, McAllen, TX 78503. You can find a full list of addresses online at https://vlb.texas.gov/ press-releases/index.html.

weeks ago. I never knew about the train wreck where dozens of agriculture workers were killed when their vehicle was hit by a train – changing train crossings and transportation guidelines throughout the area. If you really want to have fun on your way back to your summer home, visit https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1582/ index.htm, and see what historical landmarks you can visit along your drive. I also invite you to see if your state has their own website with important landmarks. I think it is fun and rewarding to learn about the communities that I live in and visit. They teach me something I did not know. They also make me have a better appreciation for the area. I am learning to love the Valley and its cities for different reasons, and perhaps more than I did before. I am learning where the little diamonds in the rough are and places I really want to visit again when I have more time. I invite you to find something else you love about your community. This is something you can do by yourself, as a couple, or with a small group of friends. Take care, and be safe. Carina
