This past week has been a fun one. I was able to go out to South Padre Island last week and it was beautiful. I am rarely disappointed in the weather when I go there, although I know it is not always perfect weather. It was in the mid 70’s with a breeze so the waters were choppy, and it was a little chilly here and there, but nice, nonetheless. Dozens of people were enjoying the weather just as much as I was. There were shoppers walking along the boulevard with bags of merchandise going to their next destination. There were a couple of restaurants and areas that looked full as well. The Island was bustling. There were fishermen at the county park access I went to. Vehicles were coming and going from the beach. See RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 19

South Padre Island was bustling last week due to the beautiful clear weather. There was a breeze, but there was not a cloud in the sky last Tuesday morning to midafternoon. It allowed for you to warm up as the breeze came in to cool you off once again. The water was choppy, but the fishermen were enjoying being out on the sand and their lines in the water. To think, nearly 300 years ago, the only residents of the Island were the native Karankawa Indians, migratory birds, and sea turtles. Now the Island is a prosperous city with resorts, hotels, restaurants, and so much more. The Island is seeing renewed buildings and infrastructure after a storm in October 2019. By Barb Zanetti Photos by Dennis Zanetti Alamo Rec-Veh Park (ARVP) residents have an answer to what many Winter Texans can do to thrive on long, isolating, Covid-restricted evenings. Their solution is a golf cart parade, a follow-the-changing-leader activity that awakens this 55-plus community with 18 minutes of early evening music, laughter, waving and comradery. “The golf cart parade brings people together, and it is fun,” p a r k manager Barbara Hamel said. “It’s a joy to see the excitement of people eager to be part of this parade. And it’s great that people want this activity.” The event is special for Debbie

and Leonard Fulk. After they talked about their experience at a Branson RV park’s nightly golf-cart gathering, the couple was delighted when ARVP residents transformed that idea into a parade. As a result, from Tuesday through Friday, golf carts line up on 9th Street. M e a n w h i l e , spectators choose their viewing spots, grab their drinks, and relax waiting for lively music, twinkling lights on golf carts and enthusiastic paraders. Homebound residents pull up their shades. Some sit at their kitchen tables, while others relax in their living room recliners waiting for their friends and neighbors to “zoom” past their windows. A few minutes before 7 p.m. on any parade night, a resident attaches a speaker to the back of a golf cart. This is a signal that everyone wantSee ARVP pg. 18

Virtual Pioneer & Ranching Day at MOSTH

Virtual Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day programming is scheduled at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 on the Museum of South Texas History’s Facebook page. Every year, for nearly 30 years, the community was invited to participate in homestead and ranching activities such as butter churning and cattle herding at the museum. This year, however, the museum will host a virtual demonstration on the community-favorite activity butter making. This demonstration will feature museum staff showcasing the ingredients, science and history of butter making in the borderlands. A digital recipe card is available to view or download at mosthistory.org so you can follow along or make on your own time. “Butter Making Demonstration” will broadcast at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, on Facebook Live and YouTube Live. The following Sunday Speaker Series Online presentations will highlight pioneers in industry, education, and municipal history. The first presentation, “The Story of Falfurrias Butter and the Lasater Family,” will feature Peggy Lasater Clark, a descendent of Edward C. Lasater, and Kelly Francis-Love, the museum’s archivist. The Lasater family’s legacy includes the founding of the city of Falfurrias in 1904 and the establishment of Brooks County in 1911. Not to mention the regional favorite Falfurrias Creamery Company which made that famous Falfurrias Butter. This presentation begins at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 on Facebook Live. Other Sunday Speaker Series Online presentations include Sandra Tumberlinson and Lonnie Davis, the guest speakers for the presentation titled “Callandret, The Man, The School, The Times,” which is scheduled at 2 p.m. on Feb. 21. Romeo Rosales Jr. will present “Pharr: A Brief History,” a pictorial history on the

city of Pharr, at 2 p.m. on Feb. 28. All presentations will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with guest speakers by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentations will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory. org. These presentations are made possible by H-E-B Feeding Fiestas. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community. About Museum of South Texas History The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century. Dave and Daphne are here

Dave and Daphne are here again. This couple loves to entertain and you can see it when they get on the stage. This group has won a couple of Valley Star Awards including Duet Musical Group of the Year, and in 2019 they won Entertainer of the Year. Once you see them on stage, you know they earned those titles. Their shows are full of laughter, tears, and a pull back in time with their classics and banter. They sing a little bit of country and little bit of gospel. Dave, who once toured with Barbara Mandrell, is known for his incredibly fast playing, impressing audiences with his skill by playing tunes such as “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and the “William Tell Overture.” He also does a mean Willie Neslon impersonation. Daphne is the perfect complement for the duo with her powerful and beautiful voice that demands at-

tention. She also has a sweet, tender voice that will touch every soul in the house. She also does a mean Dolly Parton impersonation. Dave has performed for presidents at the White House and has appeared on countless TV shows. Toy Clark proclaimed him as one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet. Daphne has toured with some of the greatest Southern Gospel Music groups of all time including the Bill Gaither Group, The Florida Boys, The Cathedrals, Rex Nelson and others. The Southern Gospel Music Association voted her their Female Vocalist of the Year. Her impressions of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, and Loretta Lynn are spot on. Styletto Features & Benefits

Submitted by John Bailey Did you know Bluebonnet RV Resort has a nationally registered butterfly garden? The Nationally Registered butterfly garden located at Bluebonnet RV Resort was created in 2020. Countless hours of research and labor went into the creation and the continued daily care of the butterfly garden. We have flowers, trees and plants that are native to Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, and several other countries in South America. Every tree and plant that we have planted here were specifically selected to attract butterflies and hummingbirds too. The butterfly garden has two trellised entrances, both covered with vine growing flowers and followed with patio paver sidewalks to allow guests to walk through the garden and observe the butterflies and various horticulture. As well, we have two wooden glider benches that allow guests to sit and relax in the garden with their favorite book or perhaps to enjoy a cup of coffee and good conversation with a friend. Currently, the park is in the process of removing an existing water fountain and replacing it with a new, more natural looking three-tiered waterfall to further complement the but-

So how do you get your butterfly garden nationally registered. Visit the North American Butterfly Association at https:// nababutterfly.com/butterfly-garden-certification-program-home/ for more information. The website has tons of information on the basics of butterfly gardening, feeders, recommended garden plants, and more. Some of the basic requirements to certify your garden are at least three different native caterpillar food plants must be grown (NABA encourages the use of plant species native to your area), at least three different native butterfly nectar sources must be grown, and the use of pesticides is discouraged. You can also get a Monarch Garden certification. With the certifications, you are then allowed to buy outdoor, weatherproof signs endorsed by NABA. If you have any more questions, visit their website, or make a trip out to the Valley’s own Butterfly Center in Mission. They usually have plant sales and informative meetings. Check their schedule or call them before heading out to doublecheck hours of operation. Their website is https:// www.nationalbutterflycenter.org/.

and other areas were without power for quite some time after electric poles in the area were taken down by strong winds. Now as you travel to the Island, you can see large metal poles, said to withstand the strong winds storms usually contain. You can still see places in the rebuilding process, but the Island (and Port Isabel) has been beautified because of the recent painting, street projects, and more. So, now some history of the beautiful South Padre Island we all Padre Balli like to visit. King Carlos III of Spain originally granted the Island to Nicolas Balli in 1759. The Island was later passed on to his grand- SPI Birding Center son, Padre Jose Nicolas Balli. Padre Jose brought the first permanent settlers to the area. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Balli requested a clear title to the property in 1827. He established a church and taught Christianity to the Karankawa Indians. At the time, the Island was known as Isla de Santiago. Because of Padre’s reputation as a kind man, the Island was often referred to as La Isla Padre – or Padre Island. North of the Island’s southern tip is where Padre founded El Rancho Santa Cruz de Buena Vista. He kept cattle, horses and mules on the property. The area was later referred to as Lost City. Balli also constructed the present Church of Nuestra Senora del Refugio in Matamoros. He became the collector of building funds for the church-

es of the villas on the Rio Grande. Becoming well known in the area, he officiated more than 500 baptisms, marriages, and funerals between 1800 and 1829. He died on April 16, 1829. He was granted the title to the island posthumously on December 15, 1829. It was issued jointly to him and his nephew Juan Jose Balli who he had requested half of the Island be given to. Juan Jose lived on the Island until his death in 1853. You will find much of this history at a couple of landmarks on the Island and at the Museums of Port Isabel. Today, the Island’s population has grown significantly, and the sandy, white beaches and calm waters still bring migratory birds and sea turtles. The strong sense of community and acceptance that Padre Balli taught can still be felt around the Island today. It lives on in the people and is a huge attraction for many that choose to visit and live on the Island. The usual way to the Island is Highway 100, although there are now toll roads that take you out by the Port of Brownsville before leading to the Island. Either way, you do have to cross the Isabella Causeway. Enjoy that car ride. There are always great views from the causeway. I can’t imagine what it was like in the early days when travel to the Island was initially done by ferry or boat before a bridge was installed that your car tires fit into the grooves as you crossed – it wasn’t much of a bridge, almost like train tracks over open water. The transportation to the Island has definitely gotten easier. There are so many sites to see at the Island – besides the amazing food

(there is more than seafood) – you can also visit SPI Birding Center, Sea Turtle Inc., follow the Sea Turtle Art Trail, the SPI Art Trail, or even the Sand Art Trail. There is lots of shopping on the main drag – South Padre Island Boulevard. There are several parks and beach access points to visit and get your feet in the sand. While I was there, there were people in the air, on the sand, and on horseback. Something to take advantage of if you are a fisher, are the beach access points and piers. There are also several restaurants that will cook your catch. There is a regular event every

Sea Turtle Inc year where several restaurants offer to cook your catch for you, and I believe there are one or two that do it yearround. During lunch at Dirty Al’s, you can see the pelicans and seagulls begging for food as the boats from the cruises come in. There are several areas to dress your fish right outside the windows and the birds, and cats, of the area are all too familiar, waiting for someone to drop or throw something in the water. So many things for you to do. You can plan a day trip and take part in a cruise or fishing trip, or just walk

SPI Turtle Trail along the main road and enjoy the shopping and eateries. A weekend trip would give you more time to enjoy the Birding Center, the art district, the water, fireworks if you go on a weekend, Sandcastles and the night life. If you like the wildlife of the Valley, you must stop by the Birding Center. There are some rare sightings of migratory birds and there are fulltimes residents as well. They have some turtles to see and alligators. You can even purchase food for the alligators. They have over 3,300 feet of boardwalk, bird blinds, a five-story viewing tower, a sea life museum,

Sand Trail and guided walks throughout the year. Visit https://www.spibirding.com/ for more information. Just like the rest of the Valley, there is a lot to enjoy especially if you get out of your car and go for a walk. You will see things you do not necessarily see when you just drive by. Have some fun, catch some sun, and eat some good food. Visit www.sopadre.com for more things to do. Also, don’t forget to visit the Island Metro Multi-Modal building just to your right after getting over the Causeway, for your personal map to the Sea Turtle, Art, and Sandcastle Trails, and other site to see.

ing to be part of the parade should get ready to roll. Along with headlights, the paraders’ decorative roof, windshield and/ or bumper lights are switched on. Meanwhile, another resident fastens a small speaker to his cart to become tonight’s “caboose.” By 7:01 p.m. the paraders are well on their way. Eight minutes later, the golf carts have woven their way down all of the park’s east side streets and crossed to the west side of the lake. There they are greeted by another group of spectators’ cheers and applause. For four evenings a week, the golf cart parade promises that everyone who chooses to participate or to watch can feel they are an important part of an active and fun-loving Winter Texan community. Parade watchers and participants say the activity is exciting. “Seeing the enthusiasm of all participants, cart owners, and spectators” is what Jim and Dorothy Miller love about the golf cart parade. They said that it is a bonus that the paraders “provide added levels of park security.” The parade offers something for al-

most everyone. Ginger Baker said she loves the event because it “shows that friendly, caring people live here.” Occasional parade golf carters, Martha and Gary Morin said they are amazed at the large number of residents who wait for the parade. The couple loves that they see so many residents “cheering, clapping, dancing and thanking paraders.” Considering the healing value of the activity, Martha, an RN, said, “We need every chance to fight the depression and boredom caused by age, isolation and this pandemic.” Many agree. “The nightly parade gives us hope of returning to normalcy,” Gary and Jan Ronfeldt said. “We’ve been shut in for months. It’s a joyful noise in an arena of ‘Bah Humbug’.” Appreciating that almost everyone is having a good time, Evie Brecksler said, “We need a little joy with all the bad things in the world now.” At 7:18 p.m. the music fades. Golf carters turn homeward knowing that for many… they have replaced loneliness with a sense of belonging.

FEBRUARY 10, 2021 19 RINA’S RAMBLINGS From pg. 1

There were people in the air, on the sand, in the water, and on horses. I spent way too long at the Birding Center, but all I want to do is go back. I did not have time to enjoy the inside of the building, the displays, or the watch tower. So, I do think it is on my list to visit again. I just happened to be in Port Isabel when the Starship SN8 took off from SpaceX. It brought people outside again to see the spectacle. Unfortunately, it didn’t end well for the ship. I have really enjoyed driving around these cities in the Valley and seeing things I have not really seen before or taken the time to look at before. I do hope I can continue learning all that our beautiful Valley has to offer. I have done most of the major cities and look forward to getting to some of the smaller unknowns or hidden towns that are worth driving through and visiting. Again, if you can, I invite you to go outside and enjoy the sun, enjoy the outdoors, go for a drive and really look at what is around you. Take care and stay safe, Carina
