Port Isabel – Small town feel by the coast
You cannot miss Port Isabel. Especially if you are going to South Padre Island. Port Isabel is a welcoming small town with little shops, museums, piers, and a beautiful lighthouse. Lots of history sits in the little square just before the Queen Isabella Causeway. Like South Padre Island, and parts of the Rio Grande Valley, Port Isabel was inhabited by the Coahuiltecan Indians. It was not until 1710 when the first Spanish colonial settler started to fish and visit the Laguna Madre. By 1828, a village was settled in the area and Rafael Garcia was given ownership of the area – calling it Santa Ysabel.

Rina’s Ramblings
Oh Boy! Has it been a cold one! I can not believe what this cold has done
to the Valley, and the entire state of Texas. People are without power, running water, and more. Some people have been without power for over 30 hours (as of press time). I have friends that have been using their camp stoves to cook their family food. We are lucky enough to have a camp stove if we need it (we have been using food that is in the fridge first) and food storage. I have also been thankful that I filled up the car so we can sit in it to warm up if we need to – and charge our phones. I do hope all of you are making do with what you have and are staying as warm as you can. Many cities have opened shelters, so if you need a warm place to stay, check with See RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 19 INDEX Parks Calendar “On the Road” Column Events Calendar Taste of the Valley Business Guide Classifieds

The Colliers are a vibrant, Americana group, that blends acoustic and electric instrumentation. They mix a host of genres like rock, pop, country, Celtic (Irish/Scottish), and folk, in a rootsy, down-home way. By doing this they form their own unique sound. They also put their own twist on a huge variety of covers of all genres from past to present, including pop-rock, country, R&B, swing, and even some Hawaiian pedal steel. They are refreshingly different from other Wintertainers™. The Colliers are Steve and Jenni, and their daughter Eliya. Steve is an innovative acoustic and electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, and upright and electric bass player. He has played with several major artists like Ronnie Dunn from Brooks and Dunn, and Mel McDaniel (Where he got to play at the Grand Ol’ Opry) and has toured extensively. Jenni is a national champion fiddler. She also plays the foot drums and puts passion into everything she plays and writes. She also played and toured with several major artists and worked for Dolly Parton at the Stampede and Baldknobbers in Branson, MO. The two met in a traveling band from Albuquerque, that traveled the Midwest. Jenni later moved from

Also while there, Jenni recorded in a local studio for Garth Brooks. Their band did warm-ups for major acts and won statewide and national music competitions. The two eventually made their way to Branson, where they played for different artists and shows. Steve still plays seasonally at Silver Dollar City and Shepherd of the Hills. Now they have their own band with their daughter Eliya. Eliya has been called an “old soul.” She plays electric bass, ukulele and has an uncanny knack for singing, vocal improvisation and song writing. She has been honored for her silky, smooth singing and has experienced many cultures, through her traveling with parents. The Colliers are in town and ready to play at your event. Their music is captivating, fun, and defies genres. When not performing at the historic Basin Park Hotel in Arkansas, they spend their time in South Texas entertaining the Winter Texans of the Valley. Check your county, city websites for clinics
We have been asked often about where to go for vaccinations. We have put very little in the paper because availability have been known to change at publication time or shortly after. We have been able to put a few notices on our Facebook page and have tried to monitor them as much as we can so we can unpublish when they are no longer valid. Several cities, including Mission and Brownsville, have had some recent clinics that have been successful and are looking at having more in the near future. I would like to get some of this information out to you so you know where to go for information. As I have said in previous ramblings, check your city and county sites on a regular basis. They are all doing a good job at posting when clinics are, how to register, and where to go. Most have been able to streamline the process better by requiring online or by phone registration to get qualified and your name on the list. This way you do not have to wait in line, just to find out they are out of vaccines by the time it is your turn.
Besides checking your county and city websites and Facebook pages, some cities have special pages to check as well. For instance, Brownsville, residents are invited to visit www.btxcares.com, for more information on future vaccination clinics. Hidalgo County’s website is https:// www.hidalgocounty.us/coronavirusupdates. Cameron County’s website is https://www.cameroncounty.us/publichealth/index.php/coronavirus/. I have also been told by someone that received her vaccine in good time, that Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is a good resource and site for vaccines. If you have a local doctor, and they are not doing vaccines, they might have a list of clinics for you. Check with your local pharmacies as well. Some of them are getting limited supplies of vaccines. This information is ever changing. If you know of a resource or website that someone should know about, please let us know and we will put it on our Facebook and add it to this story as we can.

They say that time flies when you are having fun. Perhaps that is true. But it seems to me that time has flown this past year...and it has not been much fun. A little over a year ago, the Corona Virus found its way into the United States. By mid-March, we were really in the midst of a pandemic that was truly affecting all of us. Soon midMarch will be here again. Have we progressed? Did time fly by? What progress have we personally made in the fight to conquer the pandemic? Most of us feel a little stir crazy from trying to stay isolated. There definitely is an itch - an itch to get out and travel, to get back to normal. Perhaps soon that itch will go away when once again the majority will be vaccinated, and we can travel again. Have you been vaccinated? For me, the first shot was a breeze, especially so since it was done by appointment. The whole process from arrival at the location until the time of departure was less than an hour which included the 30-minute wait to see if there would be a reaction. Now that is organization. It was not quite that way for one of my employees. No appointment but up at 3 a.m. to be in line by 4 a.m. Af-
with Jo Liston
ter hours of waiting - and still in line - there was no more vaccine. Now that is disorganization. There is a better way. In this age of technology, reservations can be set up through the computer and confirmed through the computer. Then it will be up to each individual to observe their reserved appointment time. More and more business locations, doctors and pharmacies have begun to realize this is the way to inoculate so many people. Good luck to you as you search for the entity that has a pre-registration system. The rumor is out that CVS intends to work by pre-registration. If true, that will be a blessing for so many. The best system seems to be one developed by UTRGV Health with all registrations made and confirmed through the computer. Their program was probably developed in house since they are well known for their computerized statistical reports. PLEASE, let’s do all we can to conquer this pandemic. Wear your mask, maintain that six-foot distancing and go for your vaccination. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren to conquer the pandemic. That itch to travel - even if it is just visiting family - needs a cure.
KMB holds virtual Arbor Day event Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary of the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, March 6, 2021. The Arbor Day Celebration is a fun-filled event where participants take part in a 5K, 10K run, 25 mile or 100 kilometer bike tour. Due to COVID-19, the event will be held virtually this year, which means that participants can set their own date, place, and time to get those miles in, get active and enjoy the beautiful Rio Grande Valley spring weather. “Arbor Day is a day when we celebrate nature's gift of trees, the tall providers of shade, fruit, fun, and habitat for many different kinds of wildlife,” said Chris Lash, program coordinator
for KMB. All events are $25. Anyone who participates can virtually help make a difference by registering for the event, picking up the packet and walk, run or ride away. Revenue from the event will help KMB raise funds for tree plantings and tree give-aways. Register at www.keepmcallenbeautiful.org or call 681-4562 for more information. Packet pickup will be held on March 4, at the Keep McAllen Beautiful office. On that day, participants will pick up their event packet and a free tree. “Together, we are making our city greener, cooler, and more beautiful!” concluded Lash.

La Playa: Best Charros Beans in the Valley
The charro beans were amazing. I do not say this lightly. In fact, the charro beans served to me at La Playa on Sunset Strip in Harlingen were just a precursor of things to come, a great and pleasantly surprising way to start my meal. Like the ninth batter at the end of a baseball lineup, charro beans are usually overlooked and just something that must happen, usually not given a second glance. This tiny cup of charros was flavor packed beyond any beans I have ever had. I asked a fellow diner what their thoughts were, and they quickly said they are the best beans in the Valley, as he packed pieces of fajita and rice into his and transformed his simple cup into a miniature meal in a bowl. La Playa’s menu is chock full of goodness. I was especially attracted to the specialty fajitas. I was torn between the Devil’s Backbone fajitas, with a special Diabla sauce and roasted arbol peppers and the Fajitas Las Brasas and after much debate settled on the Las Brasas. When my sizzling order arrived, smoke billowing from the skillet and sending out a mesmerizing aroma, I already surmised that this was going to be a tantalizing adventure even then I underestimated it. The beef and chicken fajitas — long slices, not little chunks — were tender and flavor packed, scrumptiously enhanced by a creamy Pico de Gallo white wine sauce that I imagine would enhance any meat you want to combine it with. Large pieces of perfectly cooked onions and mushrooms mixed in completed the dish. If you order extra tortillas, the dish is large enough to feed two. Luckily, I did not bring anyone - this was all mine. My daughter asked me to bring an order of street tacos home for her. My server packed my to-go order with an extra cup of charro beans. I was thoroughly excited, especially since my daughter does not like charro beans. After arriving home on this cold, rainy day, I gave my daughter her food and just told her to leave whatever she didn’t want in the fridge, knowing full well that meant two wonderful and warm cups of those amazing charros for late night or breakfast (yes, breakfast). Next morning, I went to the fridge - I was horrified there were no leftovers. I was left pondering, so I asked her how dinner was, planning to dig around to find where my beans had been devilishly hidden. “Amazing,” she replied, wiping the sleep out of her eyes. “And they put two cups of beans in there. “They were amazing too and I never eat beans.”

trero de San Martin and Potrero de Buenavista. By Spanish order, the three villages were eventually combined and were known as El Fronton de Santa Isabel. Garcia’s two daughters named the streets in town in 1875. The area grew pretty rapidly after that with the first post office being built in 1845 and making the area officially become Point Isabel. The area was also known as Brazos Santiago in 1849, but changed back to Point Isabel by 1881. Port Isabel was known as Point Isabel because of the natural bluff formation that jutted out into the Laguna Madre. In 1928, Point Isabel was incorporated as a town and its name was
changed to Port Isabel because of the newly proposed port being planned. The lighthouse was built at a cost of $7,000 in 1855. According to some history, it served as a lookout during the Cortina Wars, the first three years of the Civil War. By 1859, the area was exporting $10 million worth of cotton annually. According to history, on May 12, 1865, the Battle of Palmetto Hill – the last battle of the Civil War – was fought in the Rio Grande Valley 33 days after General Lee had surrendered. Fort Polk, named for President James A. Polk by General Zachary Taylor, was a supply depot for troops during the U.S. War with Mexico and housed one of the largest military hospitals in the U.S. at the time. The location of the fort was the area where the Lighthouse now stands. The fort

Success at Winter Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup event
COASTAL BEND, TEXAS – Over 340 volunteers participated in the 2021 Annual Adopt-A-Beach Winter Cleanup that took place on February 5 and 6, 2021. Volunteers worked together to clean a total of 28.5 miles of beach and bay area. The two-day trash cleanup event resulted in over 8,900 pounds of trash being removed, leaving our Texas beaches clean and beautiful for wildlife and the community alike to enjoy. Sixty-three volunteers helped clean South Padre Island on Friday and collected 1,512 pounds of trash. Hundreds of other volunteers cleaned up areas along Padre Island National Seashore, Cole Park, Port Aransas, North Corpus Christi Beach, Packery Flats, and Aransas Pass where they collected 7,468 pounds of trash. All volunteers were required to wear a mask, social distance from separate parties, and bring their own gloves as a COVID-19 precaution. Volunteers came primarily from South Texas, including Brownsville, Donna, Edinburg, Laguna Vista, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, Port Isabel, Rancho Viejo, South Padre, Corpus Christi, and the Coastal Bend area. Texas volunteers also traveled from Austin, Dripping Springs, San Antonio, Kerrville, Palacios, Athens,
Frisco, Fulshear, Livingston, Richmond, Raymondville, Alton, Victoria, and Beeville. There were even Winter Texan volunteers from Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska. The next coastwide cleanup will take place on April 17th, 2021. Volunteers can find more information at www.texasadoptabeach.org and are encouraged to take part in a fun-filled day of giving back to our community and taking care of the Texas coast. The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach program began in the fall of 1986, when 2,800 volunteers picked up 124 tons of trash. Since then, more than 551,000 volunteers have removed over 9,700 tons of trash from Texas beaches. Texans who are not able to attend the cleanup can help keep our beaches clean by making a tax-deductible donation online at www.TexasAdoptABeach.org. There are several different Adopt-A-Beach sponsorship levels ranging from $25 to $25,000, allowing both individuals and corporations to contribute to this major cleanup effort. To learn more about the Adopt-ABeach program, visit TexasAdoptABeach.org and follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
Just in its first month of registration in October, RootsTech Connect 2021 had more than 111,000 people from 168 countries signed up for the virtual event. And 86% of them have never attended RootsTech before. RootsTech Connect — a free, global family history conference with classes, keynote speakers and virtual expo hall — will be held Feb. 25-27, 2021. For the first time in RootsTech’s 10-year history, classes will be completely virtual and offered in multiple languages. Presenters will teach from international locations. Of the more than 111,000 registrants, “nearly 10,000 in Europe, over 10,000 in Latin America, almost 90,000 in North America and nearly 5,000 in the Pacific,” said Tyler Stahle, RootsTech marketing manager. “We’re humbled. We’re excited. And it’s just been really fun to see the growth that takes place when you can remove the barrier of time and location,” Stahle said.
Throughout the three-day event, livestream and on-demand content will be offered to accommodate participants’ time zones. Sessions will also be available to watch on-demand after the event concludes. Live chats and question and answer sessions will allow attendees to interact with presenters, exhibitors, and other attendees. Stahle said RootsTech organizers have received submissions of class ideas and speakers from around the world. He emphasized that the approach to this virtual conference is localization, not translation. “We’re not creating all the content here at headquarters, and then just translating all of it,” he said. “But we’re really trying to work with people throughout the world and area offices to help them create their own localized content. And then we’re just giving a place for it to live and be dis-

tributed through RootsTech.” Though RootsTech has widely been known as a genealogy and technology conference, “it’s so much more,” Stahle said. “It’s about learning and gaining strength from our ancestors.” “Everybody has a story. When we look to our stories, when we look to the past, that’s when we gain strength to face the challenges that we face today in our own lives,” he added. RootsTech is presented by FamilySearch International. The goal of FamilySearch is to help everyone discover, gather, and connect families past, present, and future. The RootsTech event is dedicated to celebrating family, discovering family histories, and connecting the living to their ancestors and each other. The event is sure to have something for everyone. Keynote speakers include former professional golfer Lorena Ochoa from Guadalajara, Jalisco; Italian pianist, composer and conductor, Francesco Lotoro; founder of OurBlackAncestry.com, writer and genealogist, Sharon Leslie Morgan; international motivational speaker and New York
Times best-selling author, Nick Vujicic; British award winning actress Sunetra Sarker; Uruguayan footballer Diego Alfredo Lugano Morena; Philippine native, former Microsoft executive, and current Utah Valley University President, Dr. Astrid S.
