GOLF: Ultimate Goal is a Good Round

Rina’s Ramblings

This past week was a crazy one, wasn’t it? Record lows, loss of power and water, ice, a little bit of snow in some places. Very unlike February for the Valley. But we made it. Some people are still recouping and will take a while to get back to normal. On the whole – most are back to a normal rhythm. Last week there was a lot of kindness going around. People with power and water were helping others and others were sharing warm meals and

Editor’s Note: These next three weeks we will be introducing some not so widely known golf courses. A few golf courses that you should try out if you have not already. Even with the abundance of golf courses in the Valley, there are a few that our Winter Texan readers seem to gravitate to. We want to invite our readers to go try something new this season. Try a different golf course. See what another golf course offers. Just because they are a golf course you might not know as much about, does not mean they do not have something to offer to the golfer. We want to know if some of these courses are just as good as the more popular golf courses in the Valley.

It is that time of year again. It is time to vote for your favorite golf course. We do this every Spring, when the weather is just right to get out on the courses again. This year we are hoping you try some new-to-you courses. We invite you to visit a course you have not been to yet and let us know what you liked about that course. You have three weeks to let us know what your favorite golf course is. We also ask, if you have the chance and would like to share, that you tell us what you like about the See SURVEY pg. 17 INDEX Parks Calendar “On the Road” Column Events Calendar Taste of the Valley Business Guide Classifieds

MOSTH presents Pioneers of the City of Pharr

Pharr native Romeo Rosales Jr. will present a Sunday Speaker Series Online presentation, “Pharr: A Concise History,” at 2 p.m. on February 28 on the Museum of South Texas History’s Facebook page. Pioneers come in many forms— sometimes as entire communities with a unique founding story. The All-America City of Pharr, which was incorporated in 1916, is a central community at the heart of the historic Rio Grande Valley. Sugarcane grower Henry Newton Pharr, who was also an engineer and manufacturer, along with his partner John C. Kelly, founded the city of Pharr for their interest in establishing a sugarcane em- Romeo Rosales Jr. pire. Rosales Jr., the author of “Images of America: Pharr,” will share Pharr’s foundation and incorporation, stories on the National Guardsmen in the 1910s, agriculture history, and law and order. Copies of Rosales’ 2014 publication of “Images of America: Pharr” are available for purchase in the Museum Store. Rosales Jr. is a fourth-generation Pharr native. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from The University of Texas-Pan American (now UTRGV) and a Master of Library Science degree from Texas Woman’s University. Currently, Rosales is the Head of Collections & Acquisitions Librarian at BiblioTech Public Library in San Antonio. BiblioTech is the first-ever all-digital public library in the world. He is the only librarian in the country to hold such a position. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact

with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory.org. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community. About Museum of South Texas History The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century. Remembering the kindness of a stranger

Submitted by Rev. Dr, Jerry Butcher, Mission Both in our mid 80’s, my wife, Betty, and I had an ‘appointment’ between 3 and 5 p.m. at the RH COVID Vaccination Clinic in Edinburg. It was a disorganized disaster. They funneled second shot people, cancelled out the day before, on to our day and opened the vaccines to a first come, first serve invitation. This left many elderly people, like us, thinking we had a time slot, waiting in freezing

temperatures. There was only a single clerk with one computer, checking people into the clinic, causing a slowdown. The line of over 1,000 people snaked over a parking lot the size of a football field. What should have been a onehour wait was stretched to four hours. The windchill temperature was 35 degrees with freezing wind at 15- 20 MPH. After an hour and a half in line we decided to give up and go home.

But a young American Mexican girl next to us in line said, “No! Don’t give up! You have to get your vaccine!” Then she wrapped a shawl around Betty and said, “This will help you stay warm. My car is just over there. You can sit in the warm car. I will save your place in line. But don’t give up. You must get your vaccine.” After such kindness and encouragement how could we give up now? We did take turns getting out of the

cold. Kept our place in the seemingly never-ending line and after four hours in the freezing temperatures entered the clinic and received our COVID vaccinations. So, the kindness and encouragement of this young stranger helped us through the chaos and trying circumstances to receive a lifesaving vaccine. Even though she became lost in the chaos of the moment her kindness is not forgotten.

Library to host book discussion

By William Renner, Reference Librarian Speer Memorial Library in Mission invites you to join us on Tuesday, March 2, for a discussion of the book Educated, to take place via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. in Spanish, and at 6:30 p.m. in English. We will send a link for this virtual meeting to all who sign up. For 2021, we are providing an added incentive to participate in our Morton’s Book Club. Speer Memorial Library was the recipient of the Texas Reads Grant and will make free copies available, while supplies last, to people who sign up for our book discussions. This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (grant number TXR21008). (2021) In this biographical story, the author talks about her childhood in rural Idaho, growing up in a survivalist family. Her father tended the family farm, sold scrap metal, worked in construction, and hoarded resources in preparation for the End of Days. Her mother, a midwife and herbalist, prepared all sorts of herbal concoctions to remedy all sorts of ailments. The family had to rely on these herbal remedies, because the father did not believe in doctors. Nor did he believe in schools—the mother schooled the children at home as much as the father would allow, and the author recalls acquiring old textbooks to read on various subjects in order to educate herself. She didn’t even have a birth certificate until she was nine years old. But one day, against her father’s wishes, one of her brothers, Tyler, decided to leave home and go to col-

lege. Tyler’s love of learning had already left an impression on her, and that impression would, years later, conspire with unfolding events to lead her to consider taking the same path herself. Written by Tara Westover, and first published in 2018, Educated is a journey of self-discovery, a story about breaking old bonds, uncovering new horizons, and learning the true value of an education. For more information, or to sign up for the book discussion, please call our Reference Desk at (956) 5808754, or send an email to reference@ missiontexas.us (please include your name, telephone number, and how you heard about the book discussion). We will send a link for the meeting to all who sign up. Speer Memorial Library is located at 12th and Kika De La Garza in Mission. Our library is currently closed to the public, due to COVID-19 prevention measures, but we are doing curbside service (except for Holidays) Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Library's homepage can be accessed for information via the Internet by entering www.mission.lib.tx.us. Why should we count our backyard birds?

By Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center Every year, thousands of people around the world watch and enjoy the birds that live around us. Because birdwatching is such a popular pastime, different citizen science projects have sprung up to add scientific value to the hobby. One such project is eBird, started by the Cornell Lab of Ornitholo- Carolina Wren gy in 2002, which has grown to be a favorite for birdwatchers. By submitting checklists, which can include photos and sounds of birds, people can keep track of what birds they’ve seen in a convenient online format. Those checklists are also used Great Kiskadee by scientists to help better understand bird migration, distribution, and population trends. “Last year, over 390 species were reported from the Lower Rio Grande Valley through eBird,” said John Brush, Urban Ecologist for the Hooded Oriole City of McAllen. “Part of what makes this sort of project so enjoyable is learning about the incredible diversity of birds we have – and it’s fun to see what cool birds’ other folks are finding.” One particularly cool sighting from last year was a Bald Eagle flying along the Rio Grande in February, an unusual visitor this far south. There are even special events to encourage more focused birdwatching. The Great Backyard Bird Count happens every February and helps

create a snapshot of where birds are living throughout the United States – including yards and neighborhoods. Visitors joined Quinta Mazatlan for a cold morning of birdwatching this year, hoping to see the colorful Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, and Buff-bellied Hummingbirds in McAllen’s “Big Backyard”. “Here in McAllen, we have some great places to watch birds at our city parks and public green spaces.” Brush said, noting that over 270 birds have been reported from Quinta Mazatlan as it enters its 15th year of being open. One of the urban nature center’s popular programs is “Begin to Birdwatch”, which is all about the joy of birds and how to get started on your birdwatching journey, including tips and tricks for identifying birds. The program is offered on March 13th at 10 a.m. Advanced registration required via Ticketleap; search for “Begin to Birdwatch” or “Quinta Mazatlan”. “Birdwatching is a timeless hobby and a great way to relax and de-stress in nature,” Brush added. “It’s also a great community of people to be a part of.” Quinta Mazatlán thanks visitors for following the most current COVID-19 safety guidelines while visiting the park. For more information on Quinta Mazatlán, follow on Facebook and Instagram or call (956) 681-3370. Hope to see you birding at Quinta Mazatlán.

Leslie Blasing can be found anywhere you are

Leslie Blasing has been one of those Wintertainers that has adapted quite well to social distancing. She was one of the first to go online with her shows last year when we all had to start quarantining. He Facebook was always busy with her daily shows on her back porch, or out on her street depending on the weather. Blasing is a pleasure to watch with her energy, connection to the crowd, and love of music. Her songs span seven decades of country, classic rock, 50’s and 60’s…. and some of todays music as well. South Padre Island has been her home for 25 years. She has won multiple awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. While she is still doing performances on her Facebook page, she is also entertaining the crowds at a couple of places on the Island this season. She was not able to hold any of her

themed shows this year, but hopefully those will come back next year – as those concerts were always a hit. In the past she has done Divas: Mega Female Pop Artists Through the Decades, Country Legends, and concerts at the Commemorative Air Force Museum. This year she is performing at Tequila Sunset and Louie’s Backyard regularly and on Facebook when she wants to do more. On Mondays and Fridays you can find her at Tequila Sunset from 1 to 3:30 p.m. She is at Louie’s Backyard from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These shows are open to the public. Keep up to date with her schedule, that can change without notice, by visiting her websites at www.chuckandleslie.com and www.LesliePresents.com. So, over the next three weeks, we would like you to try out a new course, or two or three, and then let us know about your favorites in our golf course survey. Send in your ballot. This year we want to ask something extra. We would like to solicit additional feedback for our wrap up story. And if you would, attach a short note to your ballot, telling us why you voted the way you did. We would love to hear your thoughts, your stories, and any duffers anecdotes you would like to share. The Rio Grande Valley is dotted with an abundance of golf courses, from 9-hole par-3s to courses that

provide 27 holes. There are country clubs, country club-like courses and just about everything that travels the golf spectrum. Golfers find as much enjoyment on the Davids as they do on the Goliaths. Because on every course, the objective is the same — put the small, white ball into what sometimes seems like the smaller hole where the flag proudly stands. And, of course, do not put the ball into the bigger holes, even though that seems like a fairly simple feat. For courses such as Alamo Country Club or El Nino in Mission or Ebony Hills in Edinburg – just like everywhere – the true challenge is golfer

The 2020 Star Awards Winter Texan Male Vocalist of the Year has played golf since his dad taught him at the age of 12 and he can be found regularly – sometimes twice a day – playing the 9-holes at Alamo Country Club, the self-proclaimed “Best Kept Secret in the Rio Grande Valley.” The course, which always is in great shape and tightly manicured, is one of the reasons he and his wife moved into the neighborhood, along with all the other activities that are provided – at least during a non-pandemic environment. But even during the insanity caused by COVID-19, golf has kept many a person somewhat sane.

“It was the one activity we were able to do and maintain the social distancing,” James said. “We couldn't do so many of the activities, but we could play and follow the protocols and it was just great.” Alamo Country Club is a short, 9-hole course. But do not be fooled just because it is short. It is narrow and if your best asset is that you can crush the golf ball, this course will force you to figure out other approaches. “It's very narrow and you're playing out of bounds and in between houses every single hole,” James said. “It's not a matter of how far you can hit the ball. There are a couple of par-4s that are shorter than some par-3s that would make a great

The Lost World presented at Quinta Mazatlán

Travel is starting to rise

This year has been a different and

challenging year for all of us. There has been almost no exploring nor traveling as we have all tried to stay in and stay protected from the pandemic that has overcome the entire world. Consequently, those of you who have always been great promoters of travel have not been able to promote tours nor cruises. Hopefully by the fall of 2021, we will be back to our more normal way of life. In the meantime, please check the tour schedule in this issue of the Winter Texan Times. This will show you what we had planned for the Winter Texan 2021 season. You can use it for a reference for the coming season or for whenever we are able to travel again. The itineraries are tried and true. The tours presented in the flyer are some of the more popular ones. If you are interested in something you do not see offered, give me a call, or

send me an e-mail. Travel is on the rise. Just recently more air arrivals and departures were added to our local airports. That is good news. The airlines are not going to add more planes to their schedule unless there is a need for more seats. Another bit of good news is that New Mexico has lifted their ban on traveling to their state. We just need to stay vigilant. Wear the mask. Practice social distancing and seriously consider receiving the vaccine. I received my first shot last week and will receive the second one in early March. If you have not received your vaccination, try to pre-register your time slot, and avoid the long lines and delays. Finally, the distribution is becoming organized. That long wait in line should be a thing of the past. In the meantime, stay safe and stay well. I hope to see you next year.

Quinta Mazatlán is hosting author Lisa Kay Adam on Thursday, March 4, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán. Adam has taken the whispered and fragmented words of the ancient Coahuiltecan peoples and expanded the meanings into poems and stories. Her book, xuai, will be for sale and signing for that unique gift! The book, xuai: mission-housevillage-town, opens up a window of imagination into the experience of indigenous peoples who lived in the Spanish colonial missions of South Texas and northeastern Mexico. The poems incorporate phrases and words from their long-silent language, as well as elements from the history, natural history, and archeology of the region. The book features color illustrations from a rare colonial map of the area. Bob Holman, Co-director of the Endangered Language Alliance shared, “This is a book of audacious imagination.” He continues, “There is no higher purpose for poetry than

to be the vehicle for language itself to survive. That is the purpose of xuai.” Lisa Kay Adam grew up in South Texas, spending many childhood hours under the shade of a honey mesquite tree. She earned her undergraduate degree in anthropology and English from UT Austin, and her PhD in historical geography and anthropology at Louisiana State University. She has published poetry and essays in the Nature Conservancy Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor and many other journals. Adam has enjoyed a long career in history and art museums and now volunteers with the Texas Master Naturalists. Join us on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán, Thursday, March 4, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., $5 per person. As outdoor class size is limited for health protocols, please book in advance at www.quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. Please follow current Covid-19 Safety Guidelines while in the Park. For more information, contact (956) 6813370 and follow Quinta Mazatlán on social media.

The event will also feature an accessory booth with sound bars, lights bars, power poles, GPS’s, and other electronics. Visitors will be able to touch and test the items to see what they offer. A flea market with a hodge podge of merchandise will also be on the premises. It will be a garage sale style of stuff at some pretty cheap prices. TSLAC announces webinar series

Austin, TX – The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) is pleased to announce a new virtual Research Webinars series, free online programming provided by its Archives and Information Services division. TSLAC reference staff will offer virtual versions of the popular Second Saturday workshops formerly provided on site. Like TSLAC’s other online series, the #TXBookChat virtual series from the Texas Center for the Book, these public presentations will now be held

online via Zoom. Renamed Research Webinars, monthly workshops will give participants a brief overview of the collections, resources, and services available at the State Archives. Each installment will cover a different topic, with each presentation offered twice in 2021. In addition, recordings of the webinars will be available on our website for those who were not able to participate live. The first webinar, Introduction to the State Archives, is part one of a twopart series on the kinds of collections

available at TSLAC and the access tools one may use to search them. Part two will take place in February. After the initial kick-off that was held on Friday, January 29, webinars will occur on the fourth Friday of the month throughout 2021. Other topics include photographic resources, county records, and Texas and U.S. documents. For more information about the webinars and to register for the next session, visit https://www.tsl. texas.gov/arc/workshops. Webinars will take place at 1 p.m. and last about

Mission Chamber cancels concert

After careful evaluation and consideration, the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) has decided to cancel this year’s Winter Texan Drive-In Concert, scheduled for Thursday, February 25, due to the ongoing inclement weather conditions and power outages across the city. The GMCC apologizes for any inconvenience this decision might have

caused. The GMCC will be issuing refunds to those who have already purchased their parking pass. It is crucial that we come together as a community to help one another to get through these challenging times. For more information regarding refunds, please feel free to contact Jennifer Espinoza or C.J. Sanchez at (956) 585-2727.

food with those in need. Random acts of kindness were abundant. On Facebook I asked if anyone wanted to share an act of kindness they saw or felt. One response recognized Pastor Tom Hicks of First Baptist Church in San Juan. This man opened his church for those in need. He opened his fellowship hall for anyone who wanted to get warm, made pots of soup for a warm meal. Then he opened the sanctuary for anyone who wanted to sleep on the padded pews in a warm build-

ing. Another kind gesture was submitted and can be found in this issue as well. I am sure there are many stories like this throughout the Valley. We would be happy to hear them. We would love to share with our readers how you received a kind gesture, or how you took part in one. If you have anything to share, please email us at news@wintertexantimes.com

Recovering plants, grass after winter storms

Written by Adam Russell, TAMU Chat with Green Aggies, a team of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service specialists and agents, will be hosting an emergency webinar session at 4 p.m. February 26 to address questions and concerns related to recovering turfgrass and plants in urban landscapes and gardens following the winter storm. Extended freezing conditions were hard on Texas landscape plants. Chat with Green Aggies will discuss plant, tree and turfgrass recovery during this emergency session. The program is free, and anyone interested may participate. It will be presented on the Zoom online platform. The panel includes AgriLife Extension experts Mengmeng Gu, Ph.D., ornamental horticulturist; Young-Ki Jo, Ph.D., turf pathologist; and Kevin Ong, Ph.D., plant pathologist and director of the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, all in Bryan-College Station. Also participating will be Becky Bowling, Ph.D., urban water specialist, Dallas; Chrissie Segars, Ph.D., turfgrass specialist, Dallas; Erfan Vafaie, Ph.D.,

program specialist in integrated pest management, Overton, and Laura Miller and Paul Winski, horticulture agents in Tarrant and Harris counties, respectively. Other guests will be featured to address specific questions as needed. “This winter storm is one of the coldest and longest we’ve experienced in Texas,” said Gu. “This meeting will cover some topics on recognizing freezing plant injury and how to respond.” The program will be geared toward urban landscapes, but all are welcome to join. The information could be helpful in forming a recovery/response plan for their home garden, turfgrass or landscape. The webinar will be recorded and made available to view through the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab – Chat with Green Aggies YouTube Playlist. “We invite Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, hobbyists and others to submit questions or concerns that they would like to see addressed in this emergency survey,” she said. “Please provide input, as it will make the webinar most relevant to address your needs.”
