I seem to always say how busy things are, but last week was a busy one. As we were recouping from the cold weather and enjoying the warmth that the new week brought, there were also places to go to. We had the Valley Star Awards, a boat expo, a car show, and an R/C open house.
Mid-Valley is a perfect place to try a new golf course
Dean Brown’s favorite golf hole in the Rio Grande Valley is No. 5 at Stuart Place Country Club in Harlingen. Rightly so, because earlier this week the Hannah, North Dakota native registered the second hole-inone of his 40-year golfing career on the 165-yard par-3 hole. Facing a 40 mile per hour side wind, Brown said he used his diver to knock in the gem. His other ace came in 2012 on the same course on hole No. 7. “It was a par-3 at the time,” Brown said. Now it’s a par-4. Brown has played a myriad of golf courses in the Valley, including South Padre Island, Rancho Viejo, and Los Lagos. But, living on Stuart Place makes it incredibly handy, and it is the

Valley Star Awards Show was a hit
The Valley Star Awards Show was a hit last week, even after being rescheduled due to the weather on the original date it was scheduled. Originally scheduled for the 17th, the event was held Wednesday, February 24th at Mission Bell Resort in Mission. It was a treat for all of those that attended – and the treat was not just the performers. Mission Bell served a great lunch with some options that anyone would like. They even had several choices of pie for dessert. It was all nice and refreshing to have on a warm day for the outside concert. A huge contrast to the weather of the previous week. It was a little different this year. We did not give out awards this year beSee VALLEY STAR pg. 6

Styletto Features & Benefits
By Anastasia Brunson The 11th Annual McAllen International CarFest was held this past Saturday, February 27th, at the McAllen Convention Center. On arrival, the senses were greeted by live music that echoed through the venue and the smells of funnel cakes and spiropapas. An area was gated off with marked entry and exit points making it easy for people to navigate and walk around the circular enclosure that had multiple lines of cars, as well as various vendors selling both refreshments and handmade items. Gratefully the weather was pleasantly cloudy and breezy, making this outdoor event a comfortable one. The cars were grouped together by type mostly, such as a section towards

well as other aesthetic details such as colored headlights or custom rims. A car that drew a crowd was the Ghostbusters themed station wagon, it even had an array of awards displayed in front of it so you could tell a lot of work has gone into this vehicle across the years. The kids at the event particularly enjoyed this one. At the end was a variety of roadsters, some of these having awards displayed next to them as well. I walked around three times, just to make sure I got a good look at everything at least once. There were plenty of families out, some even brought their dogs to enjoy the festivities (the dachshund with goggles was a crowd favorite). Many people were posing with or taking pictures of their favorite vehicles. Overall, it was an enjoyable event and great way to spend some time outside.

Freddy’s Steakburgers: Differently delicious
A trip to Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers is more than a trip to another burger joint. For me, this was like a trip back home. The burger patties are thin but bigger than the bun, filled with flavor and some savory crispiness around the edges. The seasonings Freddy’s uses do not get buried inside an inch-thick patty that gives off nothing but meat flavor. This, in itself, was unique and the way my mom would make burgers back home in New York. I took my burger with cheese, pickles, tomato and onions and the taste of home filled me even more. The pickles were oval sliced, the onion and tomato were fresh. I ordered my fries with chili and cheese, filled a couple tiny cups with their fries’ sauce, and soon had a large order sitting in front of me, with enough chili to have as a side order. Again, the flavor of both the creamy and jalapeno (not hot by any means, but tasty) was a delicious addition to an already tasty order of fries. Freddy’s also has a dry seasoning mixture that can be sprinkled over the fries, so there are many options for a person to enjoy. Of course, you cannot go to Freddy’s without having some of their frozen custard. I almost think it was made just for the Rio Grande Valley. Unlike most ice creams that quickly lose the “ice” part when you take it outside in the South Texas blistering heat, the same cannot be said for the custard. With all the benefits of ice cream, but with a thicker and smoother flavor, Freddy’s has several options for the customer – from their signature sundaes (my daughter had the signature Turtle Sundae and dug into it like I had never fed her before – she is now a big fan) to their concretes and shakes. So, the trip to “another burger joint” was anything but that. It was differently delicious, delivered quickly and doled out in good portions. Most importantly, you could enjoy the custard without it quickly turning into milk.

Dean Brown Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club perfect length for him. “It’s a short course, it’s not real long but it’s a tough little course with lots of water and narrow little fairways,” he said. “Most of them are too long for me.” That does not mean there isn’t length on any of the holes as the course still sports a 447-yard par-5 and, with the Valley’s forever wind even the shortest of holes can play two or more
clubs longer than the actual distance. The Mid-Valley offers the full spectrum of golf courses from venues like Harlingen Country Club and Rancho Viejo Golf and Country Club, to country-clubs like Tierra Santa and the historical Tony Butler Municipal Course. It has a tiny par-3, Village Executive course that is wide open, short, and relaxing to play and it has the lengthy Treasure Hills, which may
have some of the most challenging layouts in the entire Valley. For Brown, however, Stuart Place Country Club (“everyone thinks it’s private because it says country club, but it’s a public course,” he said.) seems almost made for him. He says he pulls out his driver on nearly every hole because “I’m not a long hitter but most of the times I stay in the fairway,” he said. Tony Butler’s public course in
Harlingen not only has a wide array in regards to how challenging holes are, but it is also probably the most historic course in South Texas. Butler brought some of the best golfers to the Valley for professional tournaments during the Great Depression. He gained fame by sometimes playing an entire round of golf with his 4-wood. He was always known for his great short game and he showed that he could be as accurate with his 4-wood as with his putter. He defeated the reigning National Open champion, and PGA hall of famer Gene Sarazen in an exhibition match in Corpus Christi and shortly thereafter was contacted by Harlingen Country Club for the golf pro position. He stayed there until 1937, bringing with him

Harlingen Country Club some PGA tournaments to the Rio Grande Valley. Some golfers want simple and simple does not always mean easy. Village Executive is a course that gives golfers a chance to try different shots. For a pleasant change of pace, this par-3 course is perfect for a quick round of enjoyable golf. Want to work on your short irons and approaches, this is the place to come. The course is mostly open without too many hazards – of course the South Texas wind is a natural hazard. But do not get caught off guard, there is water that comes into play and a few big trees that would be
www.wintertexantimes.com more than happy to steer your shot off course. Affordable is nice, but a couple of the holes make the scenery here even nicer. The mid-valley is a perfect place to try whatever type of course a golfer wants to. Tierra Santa may be the most well-known of all the courses because of the majestic closing hole, No. 18, a hole that can make you forget about a tough round with a perfectly played shot over water. Just as easily, Tierra Santa can make you forget about a tough round with a shot played, well,

Treasure Hills not so perfectly. Editor’s Note: Even with the abundance of golf courses in the Valley, there are a few that our Winter Texan readers seem to gravitate to. We want to invite our readers to go try something new this season. Try a different golf course. See what another golf course offers. Just because they are a golf course you might not know as much about, does not mean they do not have something to offer to the golfer.
So, we would like you to try out a new course, or two or three, and then let us know about your favorites in our golf course survey. Send in your ballot. We would like to solicit additional feedback for our wrap up story. And if you would, attach a short note to your ballot, telling us why you voted the way you did. WINTER TEXAN TIMES
From pg. 9
We survived! We survived that record breaking freeze. It was no fun, but
sometimes difficulties - and we had plenty of those - will bring out the best in all of us. Wonderful stories were circulating of neighbors helping neighbors, sharing their homes, taking over hot meals, crawling under houses to fix broken pipes, making room by pulling out air mattresses and extra blankets. One family had seven grandchildren for a three-night slumber party. Must have been a little challenging for the grandparents but just imagine what a good time those children had. It will be an experience they will remember forever. Best of all, the experience will influence them to share their love and their blessings when some emergency occurs later in their own lives. Which brings to mind how blessed we are in the Rio Grande Valley to have Winter Texans who share their love, their time and their expertise with us. Winter Texans have made a
difference - volunteering in hospitals and tutoring in schools as they helped youngsters learn to read or conquer math problems. Just that little extra attention is sometimes all that a child needs in order to build the confidence to succeed. Tim's Coats is one Winter Texan project that has no doubt made a huge impact. Especially so during this past cold spell. During my school teaching days, the classrooms would sometimes be only half full on cold wintry days. Poorer families just could not afford the winter clothing for their children. On cold days the children stayed home and under the covers in order to stay warm. It would be nice to think that this situation no longer exists. No doubt it still does especially during this year when so many have lost jobs or have reduced income. What a big difference Tim’s Coats has made. Thank you, Winter Texans, for caring and sharing. You make a difference!

From the Cheap Seats R/C racing reminiscent of NASCAR
“No, no he didn’t slam you, he didn’t bump you, he didn’t nudge you… he rubbed you. And rubbin’ son is racin’.” -- Robert Duvall as Harry Hoggie in the hit movie “Days of Thunder.” Cars blazed down the frontstretch, at one point hitting three and four wide on the cement track similar to the NASCAR venue in Dover, Delaware. The biggest difference here, however, was that sometimes when the cars were three and four wide, they weren’t all going in the same direction. Thus, is the world of R/C racing. Alamo Rec RV Park in Alamo held a soft opening for its remote car racing tracks, with more than 25 races, mainly on their brand-new cement track that highlighted the skills of R/C
drivers, which included not just Winter Texan RV parks but was also open to the public. Dozens of R/C enthusiasts brought with them more than 100 cars, all looking for the right setup to maneuver the fast, slick track. That perfect setup usually involved the correct balance of suspension and tires, among other things. “It’s all about tires and suspension, shocks and springs. It’s what the whole thing is based on,” said Doug Karthein, a Wisconsin native who has been R/C racing since he was 20, for 47 years. He owned two tracks in Wisconsin and said that he, along with fellow park resident Dwight Benoit, designed and built the first oval track
in the Valley. “I had hard tires racing on the cement track and it wouldn’t hold. I put some soft tires and it made all the difference. I was really flying with the other tires but couldn’t make the turns.” Different types of surfaces need more or less traction from the tires. The slicker the track, the more traction is needed. Cars did not do much rubbin’, but there were certainly several times when they did do some slammin’, sending one or many sliding, rolling, tumbling, or flying upside down all over the track. But, there was also some exciting NASCAR-esque racing moments. During one race, with husband-andwife duo Patty and “Tall” Paul Sterkowitz battling it out, one would pass along the inside lanes on one turn, only to be passed back through the other turn, reminiscent of the breathtaking battles between NASCAR greats Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin at the egg-shaped oval known as Darlington Raceway. “In our own park, we race each other often and follow the rules,” said Paul, who lives at Fun n Sun RV Park in San Benito. “We don’t take the other car out and we follow behind, waiting for an opening to go for it. That’s what we’re used to doing. It looks pretty slick too.” The Sterkowitzes have been racing

together for about four years. Paul said when the group of R/C enthusiasts started at his park there were eight members. Now, there are more than 100. Drivers brought their vehicles out in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Some brought them to display, others to sell. Chicken dinners and drinks and 50/50 raffles were drawn throughout the day. Many Winter Texan Parks had teams of drivers, wearing their race day outfits to commemorate the precursor to the grand opening event coming later this month. “This was to see what kind of response we would get from the public,” Karthein said. “It’s been wonderful, the turnout is huge and there’s been nothing but positive results.” Racing has exploded, seemingly exponentially, in the Valley’s Winter Texan parks since that first oval track was built in 2014. Now there are more than 20 tracks at parks across the Valley. There are some parks that have series/leagues and Karthein said they were going to try and bring back a racing series to Alamo Rec where races will take place on their dirt, mini and concrete tracks. “There’s a lot of interest in this from the parks and the outside public,” Karthein said. “We thought we could bring the public in once we had the concrete track up. It’s been nothing but positive comments.”

I am happy to say that we got them all covered by someone. It doesn’t happen that way very often though. This week does not seem too busy, but some events are the Independence Day parade in Alamo, the Alamo Museum rummage sale, and the Ocelot Festival. There is also something in Edinburg, at Quinta Mazatlan, and McAllen’s Arbor Day celebration. I have enjoyed being able to get out with the people more. We have been trying to take advantage of any outdoor activity with you, our readers. We like getting out there and saying hi and seeing what is going on. It has been nice to see that things are opening up a bit more and we are able to enjoy more things with our friends. This week is also our second week featuring golf courses in the Valley. This year we are inviting you to try some that you have not been to yet and let us know what you like about them. I am glad that these golf courses are open and allowing visitors to have some time on the green. The outdoors are nice for our sense of well being
and we need that about now. I am also enjoying the fact that event planners are finding ways for their events to still happen – whether virtual or modified in some other way. We still get to attend something and hopefully learn something new. These virtual events let us enjoy an activity wherever we are. It makes it very convenient. If you are holding a special event, we want to know what it is. We would love to see if we can make it out to your event. You can even send us photos and information that we might be able to use for the paper or online. We like hearing from you. If you have anything going on, or something you want us to know, please send an email to news@wintertexantimes.com Classified inquiries and ads can be sent to classifieds@wintertexantimes.com or visit our website at wintertexantimes.com.
