River Bend Golf Course

There may not be as many choices for golf in the Lower Valley as there are in the Upper or Mid Valley, but the choices are as varied as night is to day. From the country club side of golf to the more casual, the Southeastern portion of the Rio Grande Valley has a great variety of fairways and greens to choose from. For the golfer who wants a non-stressful day away from the office or the house and wants to be more in control of how big a challenge he or she wants to take (and not spend a lot of money), Brownsville Golf Center, located at 180 W. San Marcello in Brownsville, may be the ideal course to visit. See GOLF pg. 10

Parade marks 185th anniversary of Battle at the Alamo

By Herb Moering When the Alamo area parade participants stepped out on the route along Alamo Road last Saturday, they marked the exact 185th anniversary ending the battle at the Alamo mission in San Antonio. While the battle was lost on March 6, 1836, its rallying cry launched Texas toward independence. The 13-day battle between 1,800 to 6,000 Mexican soldiers under General Santa Anna and 189 defenders of the Alamo under Lt. Col. William Travis came to a bloody conclusion on that fateful day when Santa Ana ordered an assault on the San Antonio mission See PARADE pg. 7

The grand championship parade trophy went to the PSJA Early College High School cheerleaders with several nursery rhyme themes.

The history of the Big Squeeze competition presented at MOSTH

The Museum of South Texas History will host the Sunday Speaker Series Online panel discussion, “Conjunto and Texas Folklife’s Big Squeeze in the Rio Grande Valley” at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, on Facebook Live. This presentation will feature researcher and historian Evaliza Fuentes, musician and Los Fresnos High School Conjunto director Juan Longoria and Texas Folklife Program Director Sarah Rucker. The Big Squeeze is presented by Texas Folklife as part of its mission to preserve and present Texas’ diverse cultural heritage. Since 2007, Texas Folklife has promoted Texas accordion music genres through the Big Squeeze program. More than 300 young, talented players from dozens of Texas communities have participated in the program, which supports these vital community-based accordion music traditions. The three musical genre categories of the Big Squeeze are Polka, zydeco & Cajun, and conjunto, with the largest amount of entries usually coming from the conjunto tradition. Zoo welcomes sharks to exhibit

Since the Gladys Porter Zoo opened in 1971, it has never been the home to nurse sharks, which can grow up to 13 feet. The Zoo is excited to announce that they have added two males to their collection last month. These two male nurse sharks were brought from the Mississippi Aquarium and are now living in the 30,000 gallon Gulf of Mexico tank found in the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center. The sharks are about five feet long and are definitely larger than any other species the zoo has ever housed.

“They are very much like house cats: they like to relax on the bottom of the ocean, often in groups of two to five and sometimes lying right on top of one another,” states Senior Aquarist, Dan Goggin. Just like they enjoy lounging at the bottom of the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean, they enjoy doing the same here-you will often be able to get a great view of them because of this, and they are a sight to see. The zoo encourages the public to go and visit them.

And since the Zoo is so excited to add them to their collection, they need the public’s help to name them. The Zoo’s aquarium staff selected several names, and now they are asking everyone to vote on their favorite name. The following are the names to choose from: Oscar, Fred, Silver, Hercules, Poseidon, Butch and Sundance. All those who want to participate can visit their website, www.gpz.org, and cast their vote starting March 5th. The two names with the highest votes will be selected. In addition to this exciting news, and with spring and daylight savings time quickly approaching, the Zoo

Big hit areas were Resaca de la Palam, Retama Village, Laguna Vista, Laguna Atascosa, and SPI Birding Center. These active birding enthusiasts are finding some of their lifetime goals by just getting in their car and going to one of our many parks in the Rio Grande Valley. Several have mentioned their finds at Quinta Mazatlan and the Valley Nature Center as well. Hummingbird migration is happening right now as well. So, get your hummingbird feeders out and keep them clean. For other outdoors things to see and do, look at our Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide on our website (https:// www.wintertexantimes.com/online-editions/mobile-home-a-park-directory.html). It has all of the birding centers in there and a lot of sites to see. I covered some of the sites when I

was doing the city stories this season. There are so many things this great Valley has to offer. Go out and experience it while the weather is nice. On another note, this weekend is Daylight Savings Time. Do not forget to spring forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14. Have a great week everyone. If you see something you need to share – a bird, a historical site, an event – please share it with us. We might just publish it. Send photos and information to news@wintertexantimes.com.

Exhibition coordinator Cyndee Galindo quotes, “It has been a difficult time to get creative. As artists, we must continue to believe in our work and keep creating photography that makes us happy. A photograph has the ability to convey stories to those that view them. We invite you to experience the emotion, mood, narrative, and messages that these photographs communicate.” The exhibit will be on display from March 12 to April 3, at the Gallery, which is located at 921 E. 12th Street in Mission. All visitors must wear a mask and maintain social distancing while in the gallery.

The whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, cocoa (mascarpone cheese in the traditional making) and ladyfingers was smooth, not too rich, or heavy and was tantalizing along with my cappuccino. ADVERTISE WITH US The holidays can be stressful and, in my case this Call (956) 580-7800 year, a little lonely as my daughter was out of town for a few days. However, on this day sitting in a beautifully decorated restaurant, listening to Christmas music quietly playing in the background, mixing with the laughs and smiles of the other patrons, having great service and an amazing meal left me smiling (from ear to ear) as I walked out yet once again. And no, I still did not do a cartwheel – but one day....

Brownsville Golf Center

Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club

Just walking up to the front desk inside the clubhouse has a relaxing tone. You can find peace here – something everyone seems to always be looking for these days. Wide open fairways and large – yet quick – greens give golfers an opportunity to improve their game without being beaten up by courses that are sometimes way too challenging for those looking at the simpler things in life.

Brownsville Golf Center is exactly what a municipal course should be, inviting and available to all levels of golfers. That is not to say it is not challenging, and water comes into play on most holes. Also, you still have to carry that water at times and be strategic on several holes, deciding how much you want to cut a corner or to “go for it.” Just because a green is large does not always mean you want to be putting

the length of it to get close to the pin. While the course may not be laden with trees, there are still some that will still get in the way, and the saying that trees are 90% air is completely false. The Lower Valley has such a wide array of golf to choose from. Driving into Rancho Viejo can make one feel like a golf pro (just remember, you have not hit the course yet). The Spanish designed club house and restaurant is pure elegance. Just do not let that

Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club feeling of overwhelm you – there’s still a tight golf course with challenges on every hole awaiting you. Many of the holes here will make the strongest of golfers test their physical and mental skills. Go for it? Cut the corner? Lay up? Those thoughts will force any level of golfer to touch multiple clubs in their bag before finally making a decision. Its layout is intricate, its greens are super quick and, if you do not hit the ball straight, well, there’s not a lot of forgiveness.

Valley International Country Club is on the rise. A course with majestic trees, the course is perfectly self-described as a golf sanctuary. There seems to be something about this course that will lure you to come back over and over (and it is not just the food – even though that could very well do it as well). Maybe there is a pattern of comfortable, calm and peaceful when it comes to Lower Valley golf courses. Both challenging yet comfortable,

Valley International Golf Course Valley International provides the beginning golfer as many challenges as the more experienced golfer. VICC’s peaceful surroundings, combined with a difficult but beatable and rewarding layout, the four sets of tees are key in how you play your round and give even the lowest handicappers some big decisions to make – lay up or grip it and rip it? Risk and reward are premiums on this popular and 18-hole championship layout.

The course also has a nine-hole par-3 executive course (par-27 for the round) on the same property for those who want a change of pace or to practice their short game, where scoring is at a prime, and so is time. No matter what you are looking for in a golf course, you’ll find it in the Lower Valley – and expect some peaceful, enjoyable and challenging rounds.

EVENTS

CALENDAR March 12 UTRGV Patron of the Arts presents a Cold War Recital. Join them for a performance of Dr. Kenneth Saxon’s Cold War Recital. The program is built around the Second Piano Sonata of Shostakovich and Aaron Copland’s Piano Variations and includes music by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, and a newly commissioned work by Kawai Shiu. The music is infused with poetry and texts that bring into vivid relief the voices of composers living in the shadow cast by the Super Powers. Subscribe to their YouTube Channel or find them on Facebook, https://www.facebook. com/utrgvpatron/, to view the show. March 13 “Begin to Birdwatch,” which is all about the joy of birds and how to get started on your birdwatching journey, including tips and tricks

for identifying birds is being offered on March 13th at 10 a.m. Advanced registration required via Ticketleap; search for “Begin to Birdwatch” or “Quinta Mazatlan.” Quinta Mazatlán thanks visitors for following the most current COVID-19 safety guidelines while visiting the park. For more information on Quinta Mazatlán, follow on Facebook and Instagram or call (956) 681-3370.

Now through March 28 IMAS presents Max Vityk’s Warriors of Light on exhibit in the main gallery. FORWARD From pg. 13

time to reevaluate and I have good news for those of you who have requested the Painted Churches. As I looked at some of the tours and routes, I realized why not? Why not - for the Winter Texan Season - combine the Painted Churches with the Waco Magnolia Silos Tour. That should have been a no brainer all along. It is a straight shot up Highway 77 to Schulenburg, home of the famous Painted Churches. Not only that, but there is a perfect place for lunch in Schulenburg. You will be amazed at the ingenuity of those settlers who were able with imagination, paint, and paint brushes to create what appears to be marble from simple wood pillars. Our guide is fantastic. We will leave Schulenburg for Waco where we include some very special touring of the Texas Ranger Museum and other firstclass museums with time for shopping in Waco. They say we are never too old to learn. How true!

I thought our suspension bridge in Roma right here in the Rio Grande Valley was pretty unique. But then I picked up a brochure on the Chisholm Trail, one of the most famous of the Texas cattle trails leading to markets to the north. That trail goes right through Waco and very close to the Ranger Museum. The cattle faced a treacherous crossing of the Brazos River in Waco. That is until a suspension bridge was built. Can you imagine a herd of long horns crossing the wide Brazos River on that suspension bridge? I look forward to next season. It will be bigger and better and healthier than ever. In the meantime, if you have not received your vaccine, please find the closest, most convenient place and get your vaccination. Continue to wear your mask and social distance. Let us continue to take care of not just ourselves, let us continue to take care of each other.
