Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 34, No. 19 © 2021 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, March 17, 2021 Rina’s Ramblings
The season is ending soon, and it just seems to have flown by so fast. While we were able to attend a few activities this year, we missed the yearly expos and other events where we get to meet and talk to you. We have also missed some entertainment this year. Last year we were able to attend quite a few shows and activities before the season was put to a close by the virus, so we were really hoping for some similar fun this year. I am thrilled that we did get to go on with the showcases and the Valley Star Awards and some other events. It was nice to get out there and mingle as much as we could. See RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 14
Golf contest deadline today
The past three weeks we have highlighted some great golf courses in the area, and that is just a slice of them. If you have not had a chance to vote for your favorite course, this is your last chance. The Golf contest deadline is today by 4 p.m. Go online, www.wintertexantimes.com, and click on the Golf Contest Survey to let us hear what is your favorite course in the Rio Grande Valley. Seven Oaks shows their appreciation for park volunteers
Seven Oaks in Mission went big this past weekend showing their appreciation for their park volunteers. Every year they hold a Volunteer Appreciation Day. It is an annual event held to show appreciation to all of their volunteers that have helped throughout the season. “We have so many that volunteer their time in numerous ways,” said Cathy Sutton, regional manager. “It is a small token of our thanks to them for their hard work and dedication.” They had lots of activities planned for the day. The first activity was wacky trike races. Sutton said it was a lot of fun racing friends or neighbors. They then moved on to human foosball – which is exactly what it sounds like, added Sutton. Those two activities were the main, big, activities, but they also played water balloon toss, ladder golf games and others. See SEVEN OAKS pg. 10

The Valley Symphony Orchestra announces the final digital concert of its online season premiering March 19. "Springtime Schumann" will premiere live on YouTube at 7 p.m. on the 19th and there will be an encore broadcast on KRGV-Ch. 5 on March 21 at 11 a.m. “Springtime Schumann” is the last in a series of digital concerts that began in Fall 2020, the first season of its kind for the Symphony that arose as a response to Covid-19 public health restrictions. "Springtime Schumann" will feature the VSO piano quintet performing Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major. The piece, featuring two violins, viola, cello, and piano is performed in four movements (or sections) and is a musician favorite because of its wide range of moods and sound colors. The performing ensemble consists of VSO Concertmaster Geoffrey Wong (first violin), Maria Fernanda Gonzalez (second violin, principal), Young Sin Choi (viola, asst. principal), Patrick Hopkins (cello, asst. principal), and Konrad Binienda (piano, guest performer). The concert was recorded at the McAllen Performing Arts Center with strict adherence to public health guidelines. Guest pianist Konrad Binienda joined the Symphony for this recording, traveling from Akron, Ohio to perform. Since his debut with The Cleveland Orchestra in 2007, Binienda has performed in recital and with orchestras throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, winning acclaim
for his dynamic and expert musical performances. He has also performed with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra and is the winner of the 25th International Chopin Competition sponsored by the Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas. "These musicians give a truly masterful performance," said Maestro Peter Dabrowski, music director of the Valley Symphony Orchestra. "Not only is this piano quintet a challenging piece, it explores a wide range of emotions from grief, to adventure, to love and longing. When these musicians perform it, you hear all of these emotions and more." "In these times, every opportunity we have to deliver music is a privilege," said Katy Coy, VSO executive director. "The Rio Grande Valley has been through such a difficult year, and we are all craving connection and an outlet. We hope this final concert can provide that for folks, and we thank our sponsors and donors for making this special event possible." More information about the concert is available at valleyorchestra.org, and visitors can also sign up there for the Symphony's e-newsletter. Major season sponsors include Mrs. Wanda Boush, Drs. Tawhid and Mihaela Shuaib, Mrs. Trudie Elmore Abbott, Kenneth and Carolyn Landrum, Clark Chevrolet, Clark-Knapp Honda, and Frost Bank. To learn more, join the VSO’s mailing list at valleyorchestra. org or call the VSO at (956) 661-1615.

McAllen seeks applicants, volunteers
Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) is looking for elderly McAllen residents who need help in removing their dead landscaping affected by the freeze and anyone who would like to volunteer to help in this effort. “Keep McAllen Beautiful received so many calls of elderly McAllen residents in our community who were asking for assistance to remove the small plants and bushes that froze and died after last month’s winter storm,” said Chris Lash, KMB
program coordinator. “We know that McAllen has a servant’s heart and so we are looking for our residents who would like to assist their elderly neighbors in this effort throughout the month of March.” Any McAllen resident who is 65 years old or older and is needing assistance to remove the frozen, dead landscaping or if anyone knows of someone who fits the criteria, should call Keep McAllen Beautiful and get their address and phone number reg-
istered. Additionally, any McAllen resident aged 16 years or older who would like to volunteer to be a part of this project, should also call Keep McAllen Beautiful to sign up with days and hours of availability and contact information. Volunteers will be assigned in groups of no more than 10 volunteers and will remove only small plants, bushes, and low landscaping. They will not climb or remove tall trees or other vegetation. Equipment will be supplied, but
volunteers will be required to wear masks and stay social-distanced. Depending on the number of applicants requesting assistance will determine how long the program will continue. Register at www.keepmcallenbeautiful.org or call 681-4562 for more information. Volunteers will be provided with water, soda, and snacks, and according to Lash, “the warm fuzzies of doing good and helping their elderly neighbors.”

TENNIS IS MAKING A LOT OF RAQUET DURING THE PANDEMIC According to the New York Times, tennis, a socially distanced outdoor sport, has experienced a tremendous revival during the coronavirus pandemic. Along with golf, tennis is a safe, socially distanced activity that offers great exercise and competitive outdoor activity. In Aladdin Villas, in Mission, tennis had been difficult to attract a lot of players the past few years. But during the pandemic, interest and the number of players at the park have nearly doubled. But there is always room for more. Tennis anyone? Pictured are Maggie Leach (Server), Ben Ogg, Bob Tenyeck and Cathy Main. Submitted by Jerry Butcher.

Library to host discussion of The Joy Luck Club
By William Renner, Reference Librarian Speer Memorial Library in Mission invites you to join us on Tuesday, April 6, for a discussion of the book The Joy Luck Club, to take place via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. in
Facebook Amy Tan
Spanish, and at 6:30 p.m. in English. We will send a link for this virtual meeting to all who sign up. For 2021, we are providing an added incentive to participate in our Morton’s Book Club. Speer Memorial Library was the recipient of the
Texas Reads Grant and will make free copies available, while supplies last, to people who sign up for our book discussions. This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Set in San Francisco, this novel revolves around the stories of four women, recent immigrants from China, and of their four American-born daughters. In 1949, the four women start meeting together as the Joy Luck Club, playing the Chinese game mah jong, and telling their stories. The women relate their stories of the past, stories that are often filled with pain and loss, but also with hope for their daughters. As for the daughters, they feel that their mothers’ stories are not relevant to their own lives in the present. But as they go through their own crises, they come to see just how much of their mothers’ pasts they have unwittingly absorbed. Written by Amy Tan, and first published in 1989, The Joy Luck Club is a story of the deep bonds between
mothers and daughters, entwined with the complexities of the past, and of how one’s culture and past cannot be so easily left behind. For more information, or to sign up for the book discussion, please call our Reference Desk at (956) 5808754, or send an email to reference@ missiontexas.us (please include your name, telephone number, and how you heard about the book discussion). We will send a link for the meeting to all who sign up. Speer Memorial Library is located at 12th and Kika De La Garza in Mission. Our library is currently closed to the public, due to COVID-19 prevention measures, but we are doing curbside service (except for Holidays) Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Library's homepage can be accessed for information via the Internet by entering www.mission.lib.tx.us. www.wintertexantimes.com HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR POT OF GOLD? To continue some fun at Oleander Acres, Tammy Garrison-Maier, activity director, hid several pots of gold around her park to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Residents were slowly finding the little black pots with some gold in them. As the pots of gold were, Tammy gave gift certificates for Krispy Kreme and other gifts. Last month Tammy hid painted rocks throughout the park. These pots of gold are not as easy to find though – there were not as many hidden. Pictured receiving their gift certificate are Harvey and Jane Diehl from Valley Center, Kansas.

After the games, the group moved indoors for a delicious meal of chili, baked potatoes and green beans, with a topping bar for the potatoes and chili. “All in all, it was a great day out here,” said Sutton. “Very fun filled, and lots of laughs.” Being fairly new to the area, Sutton has had fun getting to know the park residents recently and the appreciation day was just one of the ways to get to know each other and appreciate those in the park. She came down to Texas, and Seven Oaks, for the first time when she visited with the new owner back in December of 2019. “We are both from Florida, and very familiar with snowbirds, but was unfamiliar with Winter Texans – or even this area,” she said. “But we both love the area and are both still out here over a year later.” While taking a hit because of COVID, the park has seen a bunch of new residents this season. And the new owner and Sutton have been able to continue activities at the park and make improvements for their residents. “All of the roads have been repaved,” she said. “Which really made
our guests happy.” The park has a new outdoor pavilion area and a new covered area at the pool. They have also been working on “the most beautiful bird and butterfly garden,” as well, said Sutton. “Lots of changes and more to come,” she said. “We have some big plans for the future.” Even through the pandemic, the park has been able to host all sorts of activities. The park has regular card games, bingo, bocce ball, cornhole and lots of other fun games. They have Wednesday dinners and breakfasts twice a month. The park has seasonal/ holiday activities as well. There are luaus, Italian nights, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s meals, St. Patrick’s Day, and so many other special activities. The park also makes time to give to others. Two of their bigger giving events include making baby blankets for a NICU unit in Mexico and honoring park veterans with Quilts of Valor (quilts made by park volunteers) each year. This year’s Quilts of Valor was made extra special with a golf cart procession afterwards. And you cannot forget about the entertainment they have throughout the season. The park has seen great entertainment provided by The Piano Man, Rusty Rierson, Rick McEwen, and Kai. The park currently has several move-in specials. Give them a call or visit their Facebook page for more information.

Lobo Del Mar: Fresh, Mouth-Watering Food
I visited Lobo Del Mar on South Padre Island for a meal. I ended up with two. Call it Christmas in March. It was a joyful eating experience. As I perused the restaurant’s menu while sitting out on its bayside patio, I was first pleasantly surprised by a large and impressively varied menu. After deciding that it would be in my best interest to let someone else decide for me what to eat, I asked owner Ben Little what he recommended and we decided on the Loboviche as an appetizer and the Caveman (“It’s stacked,” Ben warned me. Yeah, I’ve heard that before, I thought to myself.). My server brought the Loboviche quickly to my table and I could hear those she passed by saying “look at that,” or “wow” as a 32-ounce chalice-like scone was placed before me on a plate surrounded by tortilla chips. Just the look of this mega-appetizer of house made ceviche mixed with shrimp cocktail was a sight to behold. Still, I thought, it is just an appetizer. I was wrong – it was more than a meal. The menu described the heavenly mixture as a “generous portion.” They failed to mention “generous portion” meant a small country. To top it off, it was so delicious and fresh that I decided to finish it before I began my monstrosity of a main order. That just did not happen – not even close. While many who visit the island are defeated by the blazing sun or “one too many,” I was taken down by an appetizer – but what a way to go. Later in the evening, I attacked The Caveman, a towering sandwich described as having “huge layers of juicy ½ pound beef brisket patty, grilled sausage patty, grilled ham, crisp bacon, pepper jack, cheddar and Swiss cheese with lettuce, tomato, onion, on a bun w/ skewered hand-battered onion rings.” The description could have said it all like this – A caveman would be proud (and with veggies). This was not just only mouth-watering with a powerful pack of smoky, cheesy love, but it too was a lot to handle. This time, however, I would not let it defeat me. So much food – and I chose a side of cole slaw. This may have been the best slaw I have had in years. I am glad I ate it first. I would not have been able to eat it until my food coma subsided. Most people go to South Padre Island for the beach, the sand and surf. Then a restaurant decision comes to play. There is nothing wrong, however with going just for Lobo Del Mar. In fact, I recommend it…and then, maybe, go to the beach. You will have earned a good nap after a great meal.

When you were younger, did you ever play the game with your siblings where you chose an animal that you felt most represented a member of your family? I only played it once as it seems that my siblings did not like the fact that I felt my mother was like a mother dog. With five youngsters to look after, I considered that a compliment as mother dogs are very protective of their young. Not only are they good care givers but they are also good trainers - training their young to be loyal and to defend their care givers. Now as I look back, if I were to choose what animal I would like to be, I personally would choose for myself to be an insect - a Monarch Butterfly.
They are beautiful creatures. Can you imagine - a Monarch Butterfly! First of all, the name sounds majestic, somewhat regal. And that is okay to think you might be in the earthly hierarchy. But the great advantage would be that you could fly across borders without worrying about immigration. And that is exactly what the Monarch does each fall as it flies from Canada crossing the United States into Mexico to spend the winter.... a journey of over 3,000 miles. So far, the newspapers have not reported that insects are prone to have covid. So therein is another plus to being a Monarch Butterfly. No worries about contracting covid. As a hu-

Fortunately, most cities and business establishments in the Rio Grande Valley are continuing these safety practices. It was also nice to just get outside this year. While I was working on the city stories, I was able to walk the downtowns of several Valley cities, walk in some of the nature parks, and put my feet in the sand. While it was
all work, it sure did feel nice to experience the Valley in a whole new way. If you have not had the chance to get out and explore, do some before you head back north, you will not regret it.

DHR involved in COVID-19 study
As the number of patients with COVID-19 continues to increase nationally, DHR Health Institute for Research and Development, which is affiliated with DHR Health, is pursuing innovative ways to treat patients infected with the potentially life-threatening disease. Through this study, first coordinated by the Mayo Clinic, DHR Health continues to provide convalescent-plasma therapy to patients in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) hospitalized with severe COVID-19. As an active participant in the FDA’s Expanded Access Program, which was initially coordinated by the Mayo Clinic and later through the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), DHR Health has facilitated the transfusion of over 4,600 units of convalescent plasma in over 3,400 hospitalized patients across the RGV with COVID-19. The FDA has recently issued a change to its original EUA for the emergency use of convalescent plasma for the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. In this revised Letter of Authorization issued February 4, the FDA has made it clear that convalescent plasma with a high concentration of antibodies against the coronavirus must be used to treat hospi-
talized patients. Additionally, the FDA has also provided guidance for the use of convalescent plasma earlier in hospitalized patients’ course of treatment. This new FDA guidance was prompted by recent publications that highlighted the benefits of these changes, which become effective June 1. If you were diagnosed with COVID-19 and want to find out if you qualify to become a donor, please visit https://b.link/DHRHIRD_COVID19, or call the plasma donation hotline at (956) 362-2390. You can also email dhrresearch@dhr-rgv.com to request more information. About DHR Health Institute for Research and Development: DHR Health Institute for Research & Development, affiliated with DHR Health, is a nonprofit organized under the Federal Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3). DHR Health Institute for Research and Development leads the way for innovative, state-of-theart clinical research in the Rio Grande Valley.
