We have one more week in our Winter Texan season. In some ways I look at the season and feel it has passed by so fast, and in other ways, it seems like it just started. We have missed out on a lot of gatherings, but we have still been able to get out there and see you. We are already looking forward to next season and the hope that it brings of events, gatherings, expos, and other activities that we had to miss out on this year. This year we missed seeing faces we have grown to love and have missed meeting new faces/people. I am thankful for the events that we were able to go out to and enjoy with our readers, Winter Texan visitors, and Wintertainers™. While some events were put on hold, we were happy to see parks finding new ways to keep their residents busy and entertained. We saw new activities being planned and think some of them will become regular events/activities at the parks. Outdoor activities were a huge hit this year including visiting local parks and birdwatching, and park activities such as outdoor concerts, drive-ins, golf cart bingo and so much more. Activity directors and parks rose to the task this season and we should all be thankful for their efforts and time. We were also happy to see and hear that parks did not forget about

Golf is on the rise – and Texas leads the way. Rounds of golf in Texas were up 39% during 2020 says golf.com, followed by a 37% increase in Florida and 31% in Arizona. Every state saw at least a 2% increase in rounds played. Not only is there a common denominator in those three leading states – mainly warmer weather – but it is also the three largest states for Winter Texans, also known as snowbirds. And the Valley’s “snowbirds” came out in droves, filling courses during the warmer weather and playing a sport that was safer, outdoors and kept people active. Valley golf courses provided a desperately needed escape, an opportunity to mingle – from a safe distance and wearing masks – and stay active. All reasons Winter Texans leave their northern homes in the first place to visit the Rio Grande Valley (and, of course, the weather – even if golf courses were open up north, how

would you find your golf ball in all that snow?). Just like across the nation, golfers did not slow down and hit the courses strewn across the Rio Grande Valley and decided that Stuart Place Country Club in Harlingen was their favorite overall course in the Winter Texan Times annual Favorite Golf Course Contest. Stuart Place captured the overall favorite golf course while Palm View Golf Course in McAllen, Tierra Santa in Weslaco and River Bend in Brownsville were named the favorite Upper Valley, Mid-Valley and Lower Valley favorites, respectively for 2020. The phrase “a place where everybody knows your name” is a longtime cliché. But what happens if that cliché is true? Then, in this case at least, you have a 2,600-yard (from the blue tees) nine-hole treasure that feels like home. When you get back to the peaceful and inviting confines of the clubhouse, you truly are at home at See GOLF pg. 10

Alamo Museum features traveling exhibit The first traveling exhibit for the City of Alamo Museum has opened featuring the history of Fort Brown, the first military border post in Texas. The fort was established in what is now the Brownsville area, across the Rio Grande River from Matamoros, Mexico. It played an important role as the first battle in the Mexican-American War. On April 25, 1846 Mexican calvary attacked a group of U.S. soldiers under the command of General Zacha-

ry Taylor, killing about a dozen. The Mexicans laid siege to Fort Brown that was occupied by U.S. soldiers as part of a claim to that territory. Taylor called in reinforcements and was able to defeat the Mexicans at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. The exhibit runs through Aug. 31, 2021. The museum, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m., is located at 130 South Eighth Street in Alamo. For more information call 956-961-4398.

Archivist to discuss Rio Grande history

Martin Salinas

The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas for his bilingual presentation, “Entorno, arqueología y el primer poblamiento del bajo Río Grande o Bravo,” at 2 p.m. on March 28 on Facebook Live.

This presentation will feature the details on the physiographic and environmental changes of South Texas and northeastern Mexico in the last millenia, and the first peoples’ adaptations to the environment as understood through archaeological work. Museum CEO Francisco Guajardo will moderate the presentation.

This presentation is part of a series, which is scheduled quarterly, that will explore the life and culture of the first peoples of the Rio Grande as observed through archaeological findings and analysis of Spanish documents. Continue to check the museum’s social media and website for announcements on the next presentations. Salinas is the head of the Reynosa Municipal Archive and the author of the book “Indians of the Rio Grande Delta: Their Role in the History of Southern Texas and Northeastern Mexico.” He is known as the Municipal Chronicler of Reynosa due to his specialist research in ethnohistory and archaeology of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory.org.

The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century. Maroon bluebonnets begin to bloom in The Gardens at Texas A&M University. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Laura McKenzie)

Written by Laura Muntean, TAMU Even though we are not seeing many just yet, be patient, Texas bluebonnets and wildflowers will come. According to a Texas A&M AgriLife expert, the freeze likely had minimal effects on both the Texas bluebonnets and wildflowers. Larry Stein, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist based in Uvalde, explained that the majority of the bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers were minimally, and in some cases entirely, unaffected by the freeze simply because they were still in the rosette stage of growth and were very close to the ground. “The snow, more so than the ice, actually blanketed and insulated them, so they are in pretty good shape,” said Stein. “The only place I have seen a little bit of minor damage was where the plants were advanced and already sending up a flower stalk.” While the cold may have burned those few with stalks back, they will recover and come back, possibly even better and more prolific than before, he said. Numbers down, but not because of freeze “The challenge we have this year is that not a lot of seed came up in the fall because it was so dry,” he said.

“So, numbers are probably going to be down, and that’s due to being dry last fall and has nothing to do with the freeze.” The flowers you see out in the wild may be small as well because of the lack of rainfall the last few months. If you have the ability, watering the bluebonnets is still helpful for them at this point, he explained. If your bluebonnets don’t come up, don’t stress just yet Chances are, if your bluebonnets did not show this year, there are still seeds in the ground. The dryness of the fall kept the seeds from germinating, so they will remain dormant until the time is right. “Those seeds are still laying there, and that is the reason for that hard seed coat,” Stein said. “They come up over time from the simple weathering on the seed itself. Do not get discouraged. They will come up when conditions are favorable.” More than likely, the season for bluebonnets and wildflowers will be pushed back a few weeks due to the freeze. While a few blooms are starting to show, peak season will most likely be closer into April and varying across the state according to weather. “Peak season also really depends on moisture,” he said. “The snow brought some, but we need more.”

Texas A&M Forest Service launches nature challenge

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Nature Challenge website launched

recently, connecting Texans with fun, creative ways to explore the outdoors, learn new skills and get involved in their community. This statewide tool is the result of a shared vision between Texas Children in Nature Network, Texan by Nature and Texas A&M Forest Service. The Nature Challenge desktop website encourages Texans to explore nature near and far by completing challenges and earning digital badges, allowing users to track their progress in a Challenge Progress Report. “Often times, the hardest part about getting out into nature and improving the environment is simply knowing where to start,” said Jacey Tosh, Texas A&M Forest Service Conservation and Education Coordinator. “Nature Challenge makes it easier than ever by connecting Texans with opportunities to learn new skills, have some fun and make a difference at the same time.” The website features an interactive map and directories that users of all ages can use to find exciting challeng-

es. These challenges feature placebased adventures at various locations, thematic challenges that can be done anywhere and challenges that can be completed at home. “The Nature Challenge provides the perfect opportunity for every Texan to have fun and learn something new while enjoying the physical, mental and emotional benefits of being in nature,” said Joni Carswell, CEO and President of Texan by Nature. Nature Challenge represents a community for all things outdoors and a location where nature-related organizations can come together and easily promote their services, opportunities, and activities – and it’s free to use. Organizations and institutions that are committed to providing high quality environmental education and increased nature access, can participate in Nature Challenge by submitting challenges online at https:// texasforestinfo.tamu.edu/naturechallenge/?page=page_4. Learn, explore and make a difference with Nature Challenge by visiting naturechallenge.tamu.edu.

Stuart Place Country Club. “When people see someone coming in who may be new to the course, they make a point of welcoming them to the course,” said Janet Amble, a Winter Texan from North Dakota who has been playing golf for the past eight years. “All our friends were out golfing, and I got tired of sitting around reading books.” Amble and her husband Rogers are farmers back home and will be here until the end of March before “going back home and going to work.” Amble said that the course is in great shape and they have noticed a lot of new faces this past year. The course is not extremely difficult, but it is no walk in the park and provides challenges. It also provides comfort and something to do for many Winter Texans who saw most of their regular activities shut down during the pandemic-infused past year. Tiffany Gonzales is a manager at the club and started playing golf just recently. “I’m barely starting. I need a lot of practice, but I enjoy it.” Gonzales said that she has noticed a lot of new golfers during the past year making their way to the course. “There have been more leagues

coming out, despite COVID. Everyone follows safety protocols and enjoys coming out. The whole place is one big happy family.” UPPER VALLEY

FIRST PLACE: Palm View (McAllen) Steve Kasper enjoys the No. 1 hole at Palm View golf course. “It starts me right off the bat,” said the Wisconsin native, who described himself as an average (or a little less) golfer. “I usually have a slice there and can get into trouble real quick. You can either get in trouble with a penalty or have to go over a big tree on your second shot.” Kasper and his wife did the winter tour. They first came to the Valley four years ago but since took turns in Florida and Texas. They are back now – and just bought a home at Tropic Star in Pharr.

“We just liked it here the best,” he said. “The humidity isn’t as bad as Florida, for one.” An avid golfer for 45 years, since he was in the U.S. Navy, Kasper said Palm View is convenient for him – a quick shot from his new home. “The best thing though is that it’s challenging without being overboard,” he said. “It has nice fairways and greens and water. I can play the course.” SECOND PLACE: Los Lagos (Edinburg) There seems to be a simple formula – well, simple looking but not always simple to accomplish – to be considered one of the Valley’s favorite courses: Have a nice course, with varied challenges, have great food and terrific customer service. No wonder Los Lagos is another regular in the favorite golf courses. Beyond the formula, Los Lagos also offers a unique layout with dozens of moguls, fairways that always seem to lean toward the water (don’t they all?) and asks this question often of golfers: Do you think you can go for it? Sharp turns made to cut across, water and other traps at exactly the place where you want to hit the ball makes this course challenging fun… and a favorite. THIRD PLACE: Monte Cristo Golf & Country Club (Edinburg) Compared to many of the Valley’s golf courses, one could consider Monte Cristo off the beaten path.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

But, when you are good – you’re good. Magnificent trees, a beautiful layout, and an island par-3 makes this course a regular favorite. Some holes are wide open; others look you in the eye and say, “give it your best shot.” The par-3 island hole is a spectacular looking hole, but just do not let its looks deceive you. It may be straight and not super long, but it is a definite hurdle filled with risk and reward. Monte Cristo may be socially distant from the other Valley courses, but it remains among the most loved that they Valley has to offer.

MID-VALLEY

FIRST PLACE: Tierra Santa (Weslaco) Tierra Santa remains the favorite course in the Mid-Valley for Winter Texans. Of course, No. 18 alone – the Valley's crown jewel when it comes to finishing holes, is enough to steal golfers' hearts no matter how their previous 17 holes went. The green is protected in front and to the right by a lake. If you go long on your approach, you could end up easily out of

WINTER TEXAN TIMES bounds or on a hill where you have to tap down and hopefully make the ball stop. If you are trying to clear the lake but end up short...well, you know what happens there – lost ball and penalty stroke. But there is a lot more than No. 18 at Tierra Santa. With 14 lakes, and many strategically placed sand traps, Tierra Santa provides plenty of challenges for all levels of golfer. Par 3s are easily reached, for the most part, but where the ball lands will almost always make the difference between a birdie and a bogey, or more. SECOND PLACE: Stuart Place Country Club (Harlingen) More and more golfers are finding their way to Stuart Place, a truly hidden gem not just in the mid-Valley, but throughout the entire Rio Grande Valley. There is just something about it that attracts golfers – maybe it's the beautiful design, or the challenge, or the regularly talked about challenge. The reason varies but the end results are always the same, pure enjoyment round after a round. While the designation says Country Club, it is open to the public for play. But as soon as you drive in, you have that country club feel. This course is on the rise and as word gets out, there is lit-

www.wintertexantimes.com tle doubt it will remain among the Winter Texans favorite course for years to follow. THIRD PLACE: Tony Butler Municipal Golf Course (Harlingen) Tony Butler also continues to be a favorite in the Mid-Valley for Winter Texan golfers. One of the things that Winter Texans especially love about the 27-hole facility is the option to play 18 or to jaunt over to the 9-hole course that measures a short 2,600 yards and is a par-35. The city has kept the course in pristine shape for years and it provides a good and varied layout. it also has plenty of scenic and mixed bag of holes that will challenge golfers, but also provide some relief. It is a staple when it comes to being named a favorite golf course and, more than likely, will remain that way.

FIRST PLACE: River Bend Golf Course (Brownsville) River Bend Golf Course was one of the best kept secrets of the Rio Grande Valley. Now, Winter Texans have voted the course their most favorite in the Lower Rio Grande Valley once again. River Bend was built as a nine-hole course but expanded to 18 holes in 1985. It is situated along the banks of the Rio Grande and has been considered one of the best-kept secrets in the Valley mainly because there was no marketing. That changed when the Barnard family purchased the course in 2015. Not only one of the most scenic and relaxing courses to play, River Bend gives golfers wide open holes, tight fairways, elevation changes and a chance to use every club in your bag. SECOND PLACE: South Padre Island Golf Course This should be expected. Any course named after one of the prettiest vacation destinations in the South has to be one of the favorites in that area. Do not relax just because there is a lot of beautiful scenery. This course has challenges (and wind) at every turn. And concludes with a memorable No. 18, a par-4 shaped like a crescent moon. off as much as you dare by hugging the left side, but if you hit it too far, it is going for a swim. A strong draw plays nice but there are plenty of problems if you draw too hard to the left as well. Might be worth swallowing your pride and hitting an iron up the middle for a better approach. THIRD PLACE: Brownsville Golf Center (Brownsville) The Brownsville Golf Center has always believed in the motto that a city course should provide its customers/residents with a course that is inexpensive, relatively speaking, and able to open its arms to golfers of all skills. They have succeeded in both aspects. This is a municipal course with a country club feel. It's quiet, affordable and, while it may be on the more simple end regarding its layout, that same design makes it an incredibly enjoyable round of golf – from a first-timer to a pro. Want to grip it and rip it? Or maybe short and straight is your game? This course provides all those options. But do not get too confident, there are trees and water and the Valley wind. That means any time you think you have this course conquered, it has the ability to serve up some humble pie.

Frankie Flav’z: Wonderfully Unique

It did not take me long to realize I was sitting in a unique restaurant the other day as I cruised into Frankie Flav’z Craft Burger House in Harlingen. I walked in, was greeted, and sat down and began looking over the menu. There I found burger choices named “El Guapo,” “Trump’s Burger Wall,” “The Cut Throat Burger,” “The DoNutt” and more. My fondness of this establishment was growing as fast as my appetite. Frankie Flav’z has burgers that utilize items such as bananas, caramelized granny apples, peanut butter, corn and for the Triple B Burger, bacon, blueberry and brie, among other tantalizing ingredients and magnificent mixtures. Of course, there are plenty of the more common toppings from a variety of cheese to grilled onions, jalapenos, mushrooms, and a list that seemingly never ended. Most of the burger options can be made into hot dogs as well and the menu has a smattering of chicken sandwiches, salads, and street tacos. My server Trinity recommended the “Trash Can Burger,” so I went with that. After all, at the time of my visit, the deadline for this story was vastly approaching and the longer I perused the menu, the more I could not decide. The stranger the burger, the more it piqued my interest. Trinity said that burger was her favorite and it did not take long for me to figure out why. First of all, it’s a large burger, stacked high with the crowning achievement being two deliciously deep-fried onion rings with a dash of sweet barbeque sauce. This did cause me somewhat of a dilemma – do I leave the rings atop the burger or eat them individually. I compromised, leaving one at the top of the burger tower and enjoying the other one. Topped with a healthy portion of chopped brisket along with bacon, tomatoes, American cheese, a spring mix, and grilled onions (something I add to every burger I eat), the flavors were a fabulous array of fun. This was a meat lover’s dream – bacon, burger, and brisket, how can it go wrong. All that was missing was a nice nap.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Take time to smell the roses

Just like many of you who are preparing to travel North for the summer, I have been studying the map and wondering why in the world when we get behind the wheel of a car most of us are just hell bent for leather to reach our destination. Why in the world do we not stop to explore along the way? We may never travel that way again. So, let' s take time to smell the roses and add to our knowledge of all the wonderful destinations and people we should meet along our way. I will have to admit that for years as I traveled the highway to San Miguel de Allende and on to Mexico City, I would just whiz past the cut off to Real de Catorce, that Incredible City reached only through a mile long tunnel cut through the mountain. And then fate entered in and my car conveniently broke down in Matehuala, the closest town to Real de Catorce.

MARCH 24, 2021 13

www.wintertexantimes.com

While my car was in the shop, I took a guided tour to what soon became one of my favorite spots in Mexico. Frozen in time, this old mining town, Real de Catorce, is certainly one we should all visit. No doubt every state has special places that they are proud of - some large, some small, but all with a story. Before you leave South Texas, take a look at the map. You have three ways to leave our area - Highway 83, Highway 77 or Highway 281 - and all three can lead you on some interesting side trips. If you take Highway 83, there are many ranches along the way. A detour to downtown Laredo and the main square in front of the Cathedral deserves a stop. Once a school, the Las Posadas Hotel offers an interesting break - possibly even a lunch stop and hopefully they will be serving

their fantastic buffet. It isn’t on the low-end scale but then you won’t need to eat supper. Be sure to read the historical marker on the square that refers to a skirmish between the “huaraches and the botes” - the sandals and the boots or the haves and the have nots. You see that attitude of “I’m better than you” has been around a long, long time. Other interesting stops along Highway 83 might be a visit to Langtry or Big Bend National Park or nearby Terlingua. Park rangers often have nighttime informational presentations in Big Bend. This is such an interesting area; you might want to consider an overnight here. They do have an RV park and a hotel actually in the basin. Or you could stay in Marfa and maybe see the Marfa lights. Highway 77 goes straight up to Schulenburg, home of the Painted Churches. The Oakridge Restaurant in Schulenburg has a very good buffet. A little further along this route is La Grange that might be considered the Bar-B-Que Capital of Texas. Now Highway 281 will lead you straight to San Antonio – Texas’ #1 destination. Everybody knows about

San Antonio and the River Walk. However, a little further along is Kerrville and Fredericksburg, officially the Texas Hill Country. If you are leaving in early May, the wildflowers should be out in all their glory. There are two places of interest that may be a little too much out of your way but are certainly worth a stop if you can take the time - Amarillo and Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the United States. Amarillo is true west Texas and a drive through the Canyon - although it in no way can compare to the Grand Canyon - is a refreshing side trip. Amarillo boasts several museums including a railroad museum. If by any chance you are not heading north until June, check out the schedule for the outdoor musical “Texas” presented at night against the Canyon walls. Please use a computer or your phone to check out all the places that have been mentioned. Times, hours, and entrance fees can change. Wherever your road leads you as you leave the Rio Grande Valley, take care, and stay safe. We hope to see you next season.
