Thank you for visiting, Stay safe
As we come to the close of another winter season, we want to tell you how much we enjoy having you visit us each year. It is uplifting to see your zest for life and all the fun times you have together in the mobile home parks and RV resorts all across the Rio Grande Valley. Some events were held a little differently this year, but we still saw things happening. We have seen you competing in RC car races as more and more resorts are building racetracks. We have seen how much you enjoy your hobbies, whether it is woodworking, quilting or crafts. Music is such a great way to relax and enjoy life, whether you are a performer or just one who enjoys listening. We have seen how parks and
I have probably already said it, in fact I think I did so last week, but I cannot believe the season is over. With not being able to do much this year, we have missed out on so much. I have missed not being to see your faces more often, or at all. I truly enjoy our interaction when we get the chance to do so. The previous year we were able to attend expos, appreciation days, music shows and events, and other activities. It was our first year owning the paper and we wanted to get to know you and what you do. We were thrilled to have the time that we did before things started closing

MOSTH 50th celebration concludes in April
On April 19, 1970, the “doors to the past” were opened to the 1910 Jail and the rest is history. From that momentous day on, the museum grew from a small county museum (Hidalgo County Historical Museum) to an American Alliance of Museums accredited museum (Museum of South
Texas History) with state-of-the-art exhibitions set on a campus encompassing more than a city block. For 50 years, MOSTHistory has had an incredible history of its own, independent of the many stories its on-going exhibits tell. “Golden Memories: Fifty Years of Preserv-
ing the Borderland Heritage of the Rio Grande Valley” highlights some of that history and is waiting for visitors to enjoy. This exhibit will close on May 1, 2021. To celebrate the culmination of this milestone, the public is invited as visitors and guests (free admission) for the month of April. The daily complimentary admission is made possible by a generous gift from H-E-B, the museum’s Golden Partner for the 50th Anniversary. Souvenir golden tote bags will be gifted to visitors while supplies last. Visitors can enjoy exploring the “Golden Memories” exhibit with a Golden Memory History Hunt in hand. If the hunt is completed, a Golden Ticket for a weekly drawing for a $50 gift card from H-E-B will be waiting. Complimentary activity booklets for children will also be available for use in the galleries and at home. The April 18 Sunday Speakers Series Online will feature speakers sharing Golden Memories of MOSTHistory. Recently renovated, the 1910 Jail is now open and houses two new exhibits, “The 1910 Jail: An Arresting
Artifact and its Story” and “Faces de la Frontera.” You may want to reserve more than one time slot and come back a few times throughout the month as there is much to experience. It is recommended that all visitors, including FRIENDS, reserve a timed ticket in advance to enter. As of March 10, the Board of Trustees of MOSTHistory has approved to continue the health and safety protocols already in place which include wearing masks, social distancing, self-screening for COVID symptoms, and sanitizing hands all for your safety as a visitor and our safety as a staff. Mark your calendars for April, get your timed ticket, renew your FRIENDship as an anniversary gift to the museum, and come celebrate a milestone in the life of MOSTHistory and the community. A community that has created, developed, and sustained this wonderful place where our shared history is preserved and presented. The museum is located at 200 N. Closner in Edinburg. New owner, same name, same quality service
By Herb Moering The lumber and hardware business legacy the Kautsch family created in Alamo is living on through new owner Lance Gilivancz. And it is a legacy that most Winter Texans apparently have appreciated over the decades by remaining returning customers. While the ownership of Kautsch’s True Value may have changed, it is hard to tell at the store on Business 83 and 7th Street. The service in supplying building materials is still essentially the same, and most of the clerks’ faces remain familiar since John Kautsch sold the three-generation family business on June 1 of last year. The new owner is like part of the family, having worked at Kautsch’s off and on since he was age 18, spending the last six years as the company’s business manager. To make the transition even smoother, “Mr. John,” as Lance refers to Kautsch, remains available for advice. Sometimes he will pop

in two or three times a week at the store to discuss business matters in what has been trying times in this past year. The business had been in the Kautsch family for nearly 90 years after the lumber yard of L.E. Humphries was purchased by John’s
grandfather Arthur in 1932, who had been an employee there. Arthur and his wife had come down from Missouri in 1926 on one of the popular land excursion trips. Arthur started out renting land and farmed for several years. John’s father, Marvin, was a
young and only child when he came with his parents to the Valley. He joined his father in the business in 1945 after a World War II military stint in the U.S. Air Force. Marvin’s wife, Dorothy also came to the Valley as a young child in a farming family. The couple were quoted as having watched the Valley change strikingly over the years as Alamo grew from just one main street to what it is today. John carried on the family focus of providing supplies and helped to create maintenance-free exteriors with one of the largest selections of vinyl siding and cut-to-fill replacement windows. Those have been popular with Winter Texans for decades. The Winter Texan business niche also has materials for constructing carports, decks, vinyl railing, metal roofing, patio covers, screen rooms, awnings, shutters and mobile home supplies. The winter visitors make up a large segment of customers. In fact, Gilivancz said they are what

Site connects residents to vaccine appointment information
SAN DIEGO, CA – COVIDShotFinder.com, a website connecting U.S. residents to COVID-19 vaccine appointment availability information nationwide, has fully launched. Residents can check vaccine eligibility, find links to appointment assistance (including hyperlocal vaccine hunter volunteer groups and waitlist details) and sign up to be alerted when more vaccine appointments and information becomes available. COVID Shot Finder was designed by healthcare professionals in response to frustration in finding basic appointment information. More than
10,000 visitors have now used the site to access data from all 50 states. It is the first of its kind to aggregate and simplify nationwide information. The website includes vaccine eligibility information and links to appointment waitlist information by county, including 50 of the largest counties in the U.S. Step-by-step information on how to book vaccine appointments for eligible U.S. residents is also available. “As the COVID-19 vaccine process has rolled-out differently across the country, we’ve seen technology hiccups and appointment scheduling issues make delivering the vaccine more difficult than it needs to be,” said Dayne Katz, co-founder, COVID Shot Finder. “To help, we’ve created one place where all residents can search in English and Spanish to find out where vaccine appointments are available in their area, eligibility timelines and how to sign up when it’s their time.” COVID Shot Finder aggregates
and simplifies available vaccine rollout information by state and county. As states implement vaccine rollouts under different timeframes and eligibility definitions, understanding when and how to sign up has been confusing. The COVID Shot Finder email alert newsletter provides updates on U.S. vaccine efforts and pre- and post-vaccine information and tips. Telephone numbers for each county listed on the website are also available to assist residents who cannot book appointments online. “COVIDShotFinder.com has arrived at the perfect time. This essential tool, available in English and Spanish, can be used to reliably schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments at a variety of local sites,” said Dr. Dan Shein, COVID Shot Finder advisor. In addition to state and local government information, the site includes appointment links to the nation’s biggest vaccine providers, including supermarkets and pharmacies, health systems, and urgent care clinics. The online resource is free to use and aims to help people find COVID-19 shots
faster. “We’ve already seen that in some areas, underserved populations are being vaccinated at lower rates because appointment times are scarce and the technology needed to secure one is difficult to use,” said Dr. Allen Naygauzen. “To ensure all Americans understand when, where, and how to get vaccinated against COVID-19, it’s important to make the process as simple as possible for all. That’s why we created COVIDShotFinder.com as a resource for all Americans.” COVID Shot Finder creator Dayne Katz worked previously at Walgreens, where he assisted in managing business operations across California and New York. Dr. Allen Naygauzen is a physician working on the front lines at a Philadelphia hospital. Project advisor Dr. Dan Shein is a New Yorkbased surgeon. For more information or to sign up for alerts, visit COVIDShotFinder. com. If you are a healthcare organization or strategic partner looking to participate in the online tool please contact info@covidshotfinder.com.

IMAS extends a deep heartfelt thanks to title sponsors Clark Chevrolet and Clark Knapp Honda and presenting sponsor L&F Distributors for their participation in making the 13th Annual “Brew-seum” Craft Beer Festival one to remember. A virtual Brew-seum 5K kicks off on Saturday, April 3, 2021, with packet pickup at Clark Chevrolet at 801 W. Business 83 in McAllen from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and extends throughout the month of April. Packets are $30 and include a Brew-seum Virtual 5K medal, race bib, collectible towel, and sponsor swag including a voucher for a drink at University Draft House
Town Lake. Event planners invite participants to take a selfie with their race packet and after your 5K and tag them on social media @imasbrewseum with #ExploreIMAS! On Monday, April 5, a Beer Dinner at the brand-new University Draft House Town Lake includes a special four-course meal and flight by Rogue Ales. Attendees will be the first to dine at this new location, at 201 N. 1st Street adjacent to Firemen’s Park.

In many parks, the kitchen volunteer help organized, cooked, and delivered meals for those who were shut in. Most parks had sewing groups who continued to make throws and shawls for those in nursing homes. Nothing could stop you from doing the best you could under some very trying circumstances - including a freeze that broke water pipes and left many without electricity. two thumbs up. The best I heard was just recently when a former schoolteacher decided she would become a bar tender in her park. Sometimes adversity brings out some hidden talents in all of us. Well, I am still looking for my hidden talent and it is not bartending. I would probably be talking when I should be measuring. But then we would have a lot of happy people, wouldn't we? All in all, this year has still been a good year and you helped to make it so. You hung in there and hopefully you will spend a wonderful summer and return to bring us good will and happiness next year. I look forward to all being vaccinated with traveling and touring returning to normal. Let us make that happen with vaccinations, masks and social distancing. I hope to see you in the fall ready and eager to explore and get better acquainted with the beautiful world around us. Have a great summer and stay safe!

Wintertainers™ have worked around state and county guidelines to still entertain you. Parks have been able to hold golf cart concerts, outdoor concerts, and more so that the Wintertainers™ visiting the Valley could still perform and liven up the crowd. Despite the circumstances, they came so they could be with people they love to entertain. Y’all are a special crowd and are special to them. Some of our Wintertainers™ know you by name and even have groupies. It is a fun thing to see. I thank them for spending their time in the Valley and find-
ing ways to be in your park. I want to extend a special thank you to all the Winter Texans that perform community service while you are here in the Valley. We are in frequent contact with many organizations such as the Food Bank, local schools, and others, where you donate your time and resources. These organizations struggle a bit when you leave, and your generosity and caring spirit of service are greatly appreciated. You folks are good people. You bring such good things to the Valley and we would not be the same without
you. As this season closes and we look forward to you returning in the fall, we hope you will invite your friends and neighbors back home to come down and see what the Valley is all about. With all the “bad news” about the border and virus numbers, we are happy to know you still love the Valley and will share the news about what the Valley has to offer with others. We hope you will share the message and what a gem the Valley is with others back home. Tell them what a great time you had here this season, how wonderful the warm weather is and how affordable it is to stay in the

We regretfully did not get a chance to get out there as much as we wanted this year. We do have hope for a better year next season as things are opening up and vaccines are more widely available. We also have hope that we will see our Canadians friends next season and our season will be a fun filled one. It was great to see how parks were able to handle things this year.
