It’s interesting to see the emails that come through my desktop each day. A lot of it is political, and we don’t tend to share that in our paper. We like our of-interest news items. Sometimes I really have to weed through things to find something of newsworthy to you, our readers, and some days I have just what I need. This week I received another news report about a previously mentioned survey done by Storage Café. Storage Café had previously published an article about top destination for ‘Snowbirds,’ or Winter Texans. The last article they sent out listed McAl-
Valley Veterans get ready to play some softball
Curt Mecklenburg has competition flowing through his veins. It’s a part of his DNA. From swimming to softball to card games he is fierce, but friendly. “I’m also a poor loser,” the Minnesota native joked. “But competition is good.” But that competition is also enjoyable for him, a way of life since at a young age, and one of the most enjoyable times is when Mecklenburg and others from different branches of the military get together for infield and batting practice as they prepare for the second All-Veterans

The symphony returns November 12
The Valley Symphony Orchestra will take the stage for the first time in nearly two years on Friday, November 12. The 70th anniversary season will begin with Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, a masterful staple of the Symphonic repertoire. Maestro Peter Dabrowski will conduct the full orchestra onstage at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The piece is also known as the “New World Symphony,” and Dvořák wrote it to herald the coming of a new era – a most appropriate selection for the beginning of this
season. The Symphony was composed in 1893 while Dvořák was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America and premiered in New York City on December 16, 1893. The work is among the most popular and most frequently performed symphonies around the world and weaves together melodies from Native American music and traditional African American spiritual songs. It has been said that Dvořák was inspired by the “wide open spaces” of America, such as See SYMPHONY pg. 6

VETERANS From pg. 1
Senior Softball game set for Saturday, Nov. 13 at Brewster Elementary in Linn, Texas. The concept was born out of an idea by Army veteran Fred Esqueda. A Mission native, Esqueda saw a call for softball players in the newspaper one day. After calling for more information, he found out that he would not be able to play because he was still working, and games were taking place during the day. “As soon as I retired, though, at age 62 I called right away and signed up to be in the senior league,” he said. “I signed up right away and now it’s been 11 years that I’ve been playing. I really enjoy it. The friendships, the camaraderie and just having fun playing ball. “I was just sitting around and was wondering if I could get enough people to have two full softball teams and we did it.” Esqueda said he is still looking for veterans to fill out the two squads that will face each other at 9 a.m. on
game day and the winner will play a second game against a non-veteran team. Requirements include being 55 and older and be a veteran. Those who are interested can call Esqueda at (956) 897-6961. “Two years ago, we started slow but by the time game day came we had enough to put a full 14 players on each team,” Esqueda said. “We have some guys who can hit the ball out of the park.” But you don’t have to be a slugging all-star to be a part of the fun that will take place at Brewster Elementary. Esqueda said everyone is thankful that the school and the community invited them to have an all-veterans softball game and he’s hopeful that the event will become an annual one. Mecklenburg, who has lived in Sharyland Villas, has been playing softball for 23 years, many of those years as a pitcher. Born in Washington, but raised in Minnesota, Mecklenburg was in the Air Force for four years as a tower operator and work-

After the military, he went into teaching for 26 years before creating his own business – taking care of homeowner’s properties along some of the beautiful Minnesota lakes. “I liked the diversity of it and I’m pretty good with my hands,” he said after doing some infield practice at Westside Park in McAllen. “The good thing was I had three kids and during their high school years they

all worked with me. We would, for example, finish putting shingles on a roof, then we’d go to the homeowner’s dock, jump in and cool off. It was a good time.” Mecklenburg spends six months in the Valley and six months back north. He said he enjoys everything that takes place at the Sharyland Villas. “I like to use the pool and I like to play cards, pretty much everything,” he said. “I took a class once where the teacher was anti-competition, and I was the only competitive one in the class. “I ended up with a D in that class.” For more information on the All-Veterans Softball Game, call Fred Esqueda at (956) 897-6961.

MOSTH hosts closing reception
The Community Altar Exhibit at Museum of South Texas History closes Sunday, November 7, and will conclude with a Sunday Speaker Series reception from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are welcome to enjoy one last look at the exhibit, which was built by 10 community organizations and individuals. This exhibit honors and celebrates departed loved ones with favorite items, photographs and the traditional offerings such as salt and cempasuchiles known as marigolds. Each altar was built by a family friend, relative or a community organization. During the reception the following community altar builders will be present to answer any questions: The Pan American Round Table of Edinburg, honoring founder Florence Terry Griswold; the San Antonio Eye Bank, honoring those who donated organs for others to see; St. John’s Episcopal School from McAllen; McAllen Memorial Mexican American Studies, honoring long time coach Alfredo “Boxer” Hernandez; the RGV Families & Friends of Murdered Children Inc.; Edinburg C.I.S.D. Longoria
Middle School art students, honoring family pets; and family altars for Lupe Hernández and Evangelina Betancourt Martínez. The centerpiece of the exhibit is an altar built by the staff at the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives at MOSTHistory. The altar features vintage photographs of unidentified individuals that were found within the museum’s photograph collection. The altar honors these nameless individuals and carries a preservation message about the importance of documenting family photographs. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. Speer to host book discussion
By William Renner, reference librarian Speer Memorial Library in Mission invites you to join them on Tuesday, November 16, for a discussion of Girl with a Pearl Earring in the Library’s Community Room and online via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. in Spanish and 6:30 p.m. in English. A link will be sent to those who wish to attend via Zoom. For 2021, we are providing an added incentive to participate in the Morton’s Book Club. Speer Memorial Library was the recipient of the Texas Reads Grant and will make free copies available, while supplies last, to people who sign up for the book discussions. This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Girl with a Pearl Earring The story begins in 1664 in Delft, a town in the Netherlands, where 16-year-old Griet must leave home so she can work to help support her family. Griet’s father, a tile painter by
trade, has been blinded in a workplace accident and can no longer work. So, through the artists’ guild, employment is found for Griet as a maid in the home of a local artist, a painter named Jahannes Vermeer. As Griet becomes more settled in her role – cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing, and caring for the children – she also grows increasingly fascinated with her master’s paintings. He notices her appreciation for art, and soon she is helping him, running errands and mixing paints. But as their relationship grows closer, it begins to arouse suspicion within the household, especially with his wife. Written by Tracy Chevalier and first published in 1999, Girl with a Pearl Earring is a historical novel inspired by the famous painting of the same name by the renowned 17th century Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer. Letting her imagination fill the void left by the scarcity of evidence about Vermeer’s life, the author attempts to answer the question, who was the girl with the pearl earring? For more information, or to sign up for the book discussion, please call the Reference Desk at (956) 5808754, or send an email to reference@ missiontexas.us (please include your name and telephone number). The title is also available in English as an e-book and e-audiobook and in Spanish as an e-book at ebook. yourchildlibrary.com/library/HidalgoCountyLS. Speer Memorial Library is located at 12th and Kika de La Garza in Mission. The library is open (except for holidays) Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. The library’s homepage can be accessed for more information at www. mission.lib.tx.us. Free entrance to Texas State Parks Nov. 14
In honor of both active and retired military, daily entrance fees at Texas State Parks will be waived for all day-use visitors Sunday, Nov. 14. “The dedication, sacrifice and service displayed by the women and men that serve in our country’s military is unparalleled and is a source of pride throughout the country,” said Rodney Franklin, Director of Texas State Parks. “Their commitment to service undoubtedly inspires us at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. To celebrate their service, Texas State Parks would like to once again invite everyone to spend the day at any one of our beautiful State

Parks for free. I am glad that we are able to encourage families to get outside in honor of our veterans.” Anyone planning a trip to a Texas State Park is encouraged to reserve their day passes in advance since some parks are expected to reach their capacity limit. Day passes can be reserved online though the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website or over the phone by calling (512) 389-8900. When purchasing a hunting and fishing license, buyers can add a donation of $1, $5, $10 or $20 to help support the Veterans Commission’s Veterans Assistance Fund. Donations to the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) program provides grants to veteran service organizations and nonprofit charitable institutions that assist veterans and their families at the community level throughout Texas.

Altar honors threatened, endangered animals and plants In Mexico, “Dia de los Muertos,” or “Day of the Dead” is a celebration and a reunion of the departed with their families. On this day, an altar with an ofrenda, a Spanish word for “offering,” is prepared to remember and celebrate departed loved ones. The belief is that during the Day of the Dead, the loved ones come to visit their living relatives. The ofrenda altar helps the dead observe, smell and taste. The most common ones have three levels, which represent heaven, earth, and the underworld. The six most common objects found on alters include: calaveras (skulls), cempaxuchil (marigold flowers), papel picado (perforated paper), pan de muerto (bread of the dead), salt to quench the thirst of souls, and photographs of the loved ones that have passed. The Outdoor Ofrenda at Quinta Mazatlán in McAllen honors its animal and plant species that are threatened or endangered. These animals could become extinct in the near future without the help and protection of people. The loss of land in its natural state is the number one cause for species to decline and disappear. Some of the endangered species in Texas include the ocelot and jaguarundi. These cats need large spaces of Thornforest to survive: tracts of at least 100 acres of dense brush. Large birds that are endangered include the stately Whooping Crane, which is five feet in height, and the Eastern Brown
Pelican with a 6-foot wingspread. Highly prized falcons that are endangered include the Northern Aplomado Falcon and the Peregrine Falcon. Other threatened species known in the Rio Grande Valley are the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle and the Texas Horned Lizard. There are also many plants that are endangered, like the beautiful Star Cactus and the Black Lace Cactus. “Why should we care about endangered species? Our ecosystem is like a spider web. It is held together by all the plants, animals, water, air, and nutrients, each being a thread in the web,” said Colleen Hook, Manager, Quinta Mazatlan. “When threads are removed, other threads are weakened until the entire web collapses. So when animals and plants disappear from an ecosystem, it is an indication that the area is becoming less habitable for all animals, including people.” Enjoy the fall season and take time to honor and remember ancestors, both animals and plants. The Sticks & Bones trail through the woods at Quinta Mazatlán, sponsored by the McAllen Orthodontics Group, is open through November. The trail is free with park admission, $3 adults, $2 children, 2 and under free. Please follow current COVID-19 Safety Guidelines while in park. For more information, contact Quinta Mazatlán at (956) 681-3370 and follow Quinta Mazatlán on social media.

The SIDING SOURCE RGV full of festivals and other events
I continue to be amazed at how many things there are to see and do in the Rio Grande Valley. It seems that every town has a festival or a special day to celebrate. There is the Butterfly Festival in Mission, the Birding Festival in Harlingen and another in McAllen, the Citrus Festival in Edinburg, the Festival of Las Palmas in McAllen and not to be missed the Festival of Lights in the small town of Hidalgo. Even Kingsville joined in with the Saturday before Thanksgiving celebrating ranch life with the Ranch Hand Breakfast. You name it, we've got it. And then we have the Parades - July 4th, Veterans Day and Christmas Parades as well as the Port Isabel Boat Parade just to name a few. In addition to Festivals and Parades most towns set aside special days to offer special events. There are Market Days at least once a month with some towns offering market days only during the growing season where garden fresh fruits and vegetables are sold. I urge you to take time to go to South Padre Island on Turtle Release Day. It is such fun to see those tiny little turtles not much bigger than a silver dollar as they scurry to the water. Now how do they know which way the water is? Your church may even have an altar set up to celebrate The Day of the Dead. You won't lack for something to do in the Rio Grande Valley. So, enjoy! True, the celebrations mentioned above are somewhat sedentary, but you can choose to be more active. Why not join one of the walkathons
or a bicycle or motorcycle club that will organize special days for excursions. Or take part in one of the Christmas Tree Forests often organized by a local museum or your Chamber of Commerce. One of the most cleverly decorated trees that I have seen was decorated with swags of lace highlighted with a collection of teacups and saucers. Decorating a tree is work - but it is a lot of fun. I personally have entered a tree twice - once the tree was decorated with a Micky Mouse collection and another with a collection of dolls from around the world. A little more exciting for some might be a rodeo. The Los Fresnos Rodeo is generally in February so watch your paper for the dates. Mercedes is home to a Livestock Show and Rodeo during mid-March. That rodeo is so popular with the students who have entered show animals that the public schools decided to celebrate Spring Break the same week as the Show and Rodeo...otherwise classrooms would be virtually empty. Surely, there are other Festivals that could be organized. A Coyote Festival? Renowned Texas author J. Frank Dobie wrote about Brother Coyote. Armadillos? Austin, Texas has a music hall inspired originally by the Armadillos. That put Austin on the map as the music capitol of Texas. So why not a Pelican Festival? Or how about a Bob Cat Festival? Maybe even a cactus festival would be fun. Surely, there is another festival or special day we can celebrate.

Quilt Museum Fall exhibits open The Autumn/Winter exhibits at the Texas Quilt Museum once again showcase the variety of the art form with three very important diverse offerings. The exhibits will be on display through December 19. Storylines: Jane Burch Cochran, Wendy Huhn, and Joan Schulze T h i s exhibit will consist of 14 works by the trio of talented quilters under this specific Last Suppers theme. A by Jane Burch storyline consists of the narrative threads connecting characters and events, often with surprise twists that can complicate the main narrative as it weaves the events that hold our attention until the end. J a n e Burch Cochran catches our attention with her ornamental embellishment of beads, buttons, and paint, en- The Collector hancing her by Wendy Huhn narratives with an abundance of texture that keeps our eyes moving around the surface. Wendy Huhn’s signature techniques of image transfer and screen-printing vividly enable her to present her tales, juxtaposing imaginary characters with mundane objects to pique our curiosity. Joan Schulze, who is also a poet, gathers her photographs, fragments of text, and other materials into surfaces that make her stories sing, with themes of loss, personal connections, and individuality. Miniature Art, Grand Designs, by Kumiko Frydl The work of one of the world’s best-known quilters of smaller work is celebrated with 30 pieces in this exhibit. Japanese designer Kumiko Frydl settled in Houston after residing in Canada and Great Britain. With a background in commercial art and
dressm a k ing, she began quilting in 1987 after she moved to Canada. Bouquets with Tufor Her first by Rose Kumiko Frydl projects were quilted garments, and then she moved on to medium-sized quilts. But because her husband’s job required her to relocate frequently, Frydl began to concentrate mainly on miniature quilts, which are easy to transport. She quilts by hand and machine and has become an expert in ribbon embroidery. Her amazing miniature pieces have won numerous prizes at the major quilt festivals, and Frydl has been honored with solo exhibitions in France, Japan, Russia, and Spain. Hidden Treasures: Antique Quilts from the Collection of Carolyn Miller This exhibit will feature more than 25 quilts showing some of the best of Miller’s pieces, which she began acquiring in the ear- Red and White Applique ly 1990’s by Carolyn Miller after her own quilting journey began. Museum Collections Manager Vicki Mangum is the guest curator. While Miller has done her own quilting by machine, she was very intrigued by the pictures of quilts in magazines with gorgeous hand quilting. In one of those magazines, she saw a small ad for a meeting in Paducah, KY, and immediately signed up for it. It was her first seminar with the American Quilt Study Group and the first session she attended was with Merikay Waldvogel speaking about collectors of early quilt patterns. The Texas Quilt Museum is located at 140 W. Colorado St., in La Grange. Hours are Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn more at www.texasquiltmuseum.org.

I arrived at Ranch House Burgers in Mission recently extremely hungry. This was the right place at the right time. The host and my server both highly recommended the fajita fries so that easily became a no-brainer. Ordering a burger wasn’t so easy. The choices are plentiful, and the creative options and descriptions not only can make your mouth water but can make you forget you already ordered a large appetizer. I chose the 420 burger – chorizo, bacon, fried egg, Swiss cheese, refried beans and avocado – sounded like a perfect combination to remove the extremeness from my hunger. The specialty burgers are fun just to read from the menu – the John Wayne, the Pancho Villa, the Fire in the Hole – are just some of the names for these
mega-size burgers. I dug into a deep bowl of fries smothered with tiny, tender pieces of fajita mixed in with pico de gallo, melted cheese, guacamole and sour cream. It was a flavor-filled journey. The fries were fresh, seasoned to perfection and it wasn’t served with all the toppings just sitting on top. They were all spread throughout the dish, so every bite had a smorgasbord of tantalizing
tongue and taste appeal. The burger was everything I expected. The creamy flavors of the avocado, melted cheese and egg combined with the crispy bacon, and beef patty complemented one another and it wasn’t long before I knew I had a challenge as my extreme hunger dissipated and the fear of not finishing displaced it. I continued to look over the quite large menu and realized that while
13
this establishment is known for its amazing burgers, it also has a tantalizing mix of other foods from BBQ to Tex-Mex, sandwiches, chicken fried steak and seafood. There’s also a kid’s menu, and a separate list of sides. (It has salads as well, but for some reason my vision goes bad whenever I get to salads on a menu). Also, don’t let the lunch crowd scare you away. The kitchen operation must run as smooth as melted butter. I arrived at noon, placed my order, ate and then ordered to go for my daughter, and I was still out before the typical one-hour work lunch was over. I walked in extremely hungry, left extremely happy and then took an extreme nap when I got home, thinking about what burger I would get when I visit the Weslaco location.

len, Harlingen, Brownsville and Mission as making the list. This new list has some other details, but still have Mission and McAllen in the top. Texas has 26 of the top 100 destinations on this new list. The previous survey had Brownsville in the top 10 as well. Because of the two cities being in the Rio Grande Valley, it also highlighted why the Rio Grande Valley, as a whole, is on the top of their list. Of course, average October to March temperatures were the number one reason with the Rio Grande Valley average temperature sitting at a cozy 67 degrees. Next was golf courses and health centers. According to the survey, there are around 22 golf courses in the area and an important number of health centers per 1,000 of the population – no less than 3.6. Other big things they looked at that helped the Valley area was average rent and internet speeds. Mission, as the survey says, took fourth because of its unbeatable quality of life and affordability. I just have to say, I am glad you
choose us to spend some time with. If it weren’t for you, we would not be here delivering the news that matters to you. We try to search each week for news, events, and activities that you would be interested in attending or knowing about. We do put some off topic news in every once in a while to add some color and fun as well. I enjoy serving you, serving our readers and learning about you along the way. We love hearing from you and finding out why you come to the Valley, what you like to do while here, and learning other ways we can help you. Please continue to send us your news. Send us news items on what is going on in your park. Let us know if there is an interesting person or group that we need to know. Send us photos of your holiday get togethers, of your potlucks, of all the fun things you are doing out there with your park and friends. This paper is all about you and we want to make sure you are a part of it. Send your items to news@wintertexantimes.com. We want to hear from you.

Seven Oaks has a haunting good time
It was a fun time, and lots of laughs. Seven Oaks Resort had a costume contest for not only their guests, but also their furry friends. The resort had a great turnout despite being so early in the season. Park management is also glad that the Canadian border is back open, and the grand prize winner was one of their Canadian residents that was not able to join them last year. There was so much delicious food, cooked by their kitchen crew, and then guests/residents brought in a scary dish to share as well.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
“Love the creativity that everyone put into it. We also had karaoke at the end of the night. The karaoke wasn't planned, but we had some great singers that ended the night perfectly,” said Cathy Sutton, regional manager. “The best part of Seven Oaks Resort is that we have the friendliest people in the Valley,” said Sutton. “We pride ourselves on the guests that we have, in addition to our amazing workamper crew that goes above and beyond.”
