Park Place Estates honors its Veterans
By Herb Moering As might be expected there was a sea of red, white, and blue color in the audience for the Veteran’s Day program at Park Place Estates RV Resort in Harlingen. That was the setting despite park guests not finding adequate patriotic decorations for golf carts and bikes, apparently due to the supply chain problems, that led to cancellation of the traditional parade, according to Connie Teel, activity director for the park. But the long-running annual program of some 35 years went on as scheduled, but with a twist that featured all women veterans living at Park Place. The main speaker was See VETERANS pg. 2

skirts. As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to musical performances of classic hits such as “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” and many more. You have never had this much fun at the prom. In Act II, The Wonderettes reunite a decade later to take the stage once again to perform at their ten-year high school reunion. During their performance, we learn about the highs and lows each girl has experienced in the past decade and the different roads each have traveled since graduation. We are charmed and delighted as the girls sing musical sensations such as “Heatwave,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “It’s My Party,” “Rescue Me,” “Respect,” and more, as they discover that no matter what life throws their way, they will conquer it together. The Marvelous Wonderettes production at HCT features the incred-
ibly talented shining stars: Beth Cantu, Vicky Fultz, Amy Gonzalez, and Cassandra Ramos, and is under the experienced music direction of Mike Ensign. Performances are presented Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. Adults $25 and Children (under 18 yrs.) $10. Tickets are sold at the Box Office on performance days: Friday and Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. HCT accepts credit/debit cards, cash, and checks. All sales are final. This past week, as a symbolic sign of friendship and the important bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States, the Consul General of the United States in Matamoros, Yolanda A. Parra and the Consul General of Mexico in Brownsville, Juan Carlos Cué met in media-

During the meeting, both consuls highlighted the importance of reopening international bridges for fully vaccinated documented non-essential travelers and how it will strengthen commercial and tourist ties. The consuls celebrated the opening by endorsing that our countries are partners, neighbors and friends. Melissa Guerra
Quinta Mazatlán is honored to host culinary expert, Melissa Guerra, on Thursday November 18th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a recipe presentation and sampling on “Texas Ranch Dishes for Thanksgiving”. Melissa Guerra is an eighth generation Texan, born and raised on a working cattle ranch in South Texas. She is a self-taught culinary expert and food historian, specializing in the food ways of the American continent, especially Texas regional, Mexican, and Latin American cuisine. In this presentation, she will share delicious recipes and food samples featuring flavors of the southwest that you can make for the Thanksgiving table. Guerra’s passion for cooking, writing, photography, and South Texas is blended perfectly in her unique and innovative take on traditional Latin-American cuisine. Guerra’s inspiration comes from growing up in South Texas along the United States and Mexico border. The diversity of
the region has influenced the way she showcases her creations. Combining and celebrating the bi-culturalism of the Rio Grande Valley is as much of a delight as it is an artistic challenge. She has published two cookbooks featuring numerous recipes, “The Texas Provincial Kitchen” and “Dishes from the Wild Horse Desert: Norteño Cuisine of South Texas”. Her recipes have received much acclaim and earned her finalist placings for the James Beard Award in the category of Foods of the Americas and the International Association of Culinary Professionals award in the same category. Additional accolades include, being a member of Les Dames d Escoffier, a founding board member of Foodways Texas, and a member of The Culinary Institute of America Latin Cuisines Advisory Council Executive Committee. Guerra is also an adjunct professor and teaches food history and college writing at the Culinary Institute of Americas in San Antonio, Texas and Hyde Park, New York. As an active food blogger, Guerra shares weekly recipes and video podcasts across her various platforms. You can follow Melissa Guerra through her Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and blog website www.kitchenwrangler.com. Visit Quinta Mazatlán on Thursday, November 18th at 6 p.m. for a delightful culinary experience with Melissa Guerra. Tickets are $3 per person. WINTER TEXAN TIMES
Most all families have traditions. Perhaps it is decorating the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving or maybe it is spending July 4th at the beach or going shopping early on Saturday mornings. Whatever your tradition may be, if you live in a state that borders Mexico some of their traditions may well have spilled over into our country. For instance, the lasso that is still used in many Mexican weddings. The lasso - generally a white rope or garland of flowers - is placed over the bride and groom symbolizing their unity and eternal love for each other. Or the quinceanera, a big celebration that so many young girls look forward to with great anticipation. This tradition generally begins in the church where the parents ask God's blessing and guidance for their 15-year-old daughter as they recognize they have done their best to raise her to this socalled age of reason when she must make many decisions on her own. Maybe if you live in a border city you have had the honor of being invited to take part in a posada. The word posada translates to English as Inn. A posada then is a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph seeking a place where the Christ Child could be born. One tradition celebrated widely in Mexico is the celebration of the Day of the Dead. The observance is celebrated more or less at the same time that we celebrate Halloween. However, this celebration is not just a one-day event but extends for ap-

proximately a full week with each day being a special day of remembrance for a deceased loved one. There is a day set aside for remembering and honoring the deceased children, another for adults and so on. One of the major days is the second of November dedicated to remembering the deceased adults. It is believed that on their special day the souls of the departed will come closer to earth. All night vigils are held in cemeteries that come alive with profusely decorated altars covered with chrysanthemums. The color of the flower and the distinctive smell help to guide the soul for the visit. Three-foot-tall candles with a circumference of some three inches also light the way to each grave site where the family of the departed remember and pay respect to their loved one. Favorite food and drink are prepared and placed on the grave. The essence of which the soul will enjoy. It took a long time for our culture to accept the Day of the Dead observance. Today many churches and museums in the Texas Rio Grande Valley construct Day of the Dead altars and invite community members to bring candles and photos of the deceased to decorate the altar. Actually, the Day of the Dead celebration is a moving, reverent experience. It is one of most beautiful tours that I have ever offered. However, when the tour was first introduced, it was extremely difficult to sell. I wonder - has our society decided to accept other people’s traditions?

The course has consistently worked on improving its cart paths, sand traps, natural beauty, and other areas in recent years. If you haven't played here recently, it's worth checking out again. You may end up out there more than you think – it's that beautiful. Address: 1 Golf House Road, Laguna Vista. Website: www.spigolf.com Golf Pro: Jack Blundell

Tierra Santa Golf Club “Big changes that have been thought about for a decade will be reality in February.” Tierra Santa is getting an upgrade. The pro shop, restaurant and more are under renovation and should be opening in February – and, just like the ultra-beautiful course, the changes will be amazing too. The biggest challenge here – other than the beautiful and challenging No. 18 – is to believe that this is a public course and not a country club. It's going to feel even more like an elite country club-like destination as soon as construction is complete on the new bar/grill the club is building, then the renovation of the clubhouse. The course is well-maintained and has some of the prettiest and well-designed holes in the Valley. Oh, did we mention No. 18? Even if we did, it's worth mentioning again. You will leave that hole either with a big grin on your face or scratching your head wondering... how?

without being beaten up by courses that are sometimes way too challenging for those looking at the simpler things in life. Brownsville Golf Center is exactly what a municipal course should be, inviting and available to all levels of golfers. That is not to say it is not challenging, and water comes into play on most holes. Also, you still have to carry that water at times and be strategic on several holes, deciding how much you want to cut a corner or to “go for it.” Address: 180 W. San Marcello, Brownsville Phone: (956) 541-2582 Description: 18-hole, par-70, municipal course Website: www.cob.us Golf Pro: Isabel Gaucin Yardage: Blue – 6,144; White – 5,652; Red – 5,091 Amenities: Chip and putt green, snack bar Winter Texan Specials: $25 for 18 holes; Twilight starts at 2 p.m. for $18; members $75/month for seniors, doesn't include cart; yearly membership: $904 with the cart. Stuart Place Country Club This is a course where “everybody knows your name.” Well, at least it has a feel like that – from the time you decide what color tees you're going to hit from (a big deal since there is a 700-yard difference) until the time you return to the comfort of the small, but definitely relaxing clubhouse. The course isn't super difficult, but it still has its challenges, and you can't just plan on wedges and putters, but you could probably still have fun with only that on this

pretty course. The new golf pro, Wendy Werley Bullock is one of the best teaching pros in all of South Texas and is a certified Master teacher for children. Address: 155 Highland Drive, Harlingen Phone: (956) 428-2000 Description: 9-hole Par-36 Website: Facebook – Stuart Place Golf Golf Pro: Wendy Werley Bullock Yardage: Blue – 2,646; White – 2,205; Yellow – 2,057; Red –1,944 Amenities: Bar with snacks, practice putting area Winter Texan Specials: $18 for 9 holes with cart; $27 for 18 holes with cart. Valley International Country Club Both challenging yet comfortable, Valley International provides the beginning golfer as many challenges as the more experienced golfer. Perfectly self-described as a golf sanctuary, the peaceful surroundings combined with a difficult but beatable and rewarding layout, the four sets of tees are key in how you play your round and give even the lowest handicappers some big decisions to make – lay up or grip it and rip it? Risk and reward are premiums on this popular and 18-hole championship layout. The course reseeded the greens and they renovated the pro shop, which is up and running (“We're pretty good right now.”) The course also has a nine-hole par-3 executive course (par-27 for the round) on the same property for those who want a change of pace or to practice their short game, where scoring is at a prime, and so is time. Address: 301 McFadden, Brownsville Website: www.valleyinternationalgolf.com Phone: (956) 548-9199 General Manager: Kevin Sargent Golf Pro: K.C. Tickets on sale for UTRGV SPI Battle on the Beach The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Friday that single-session tickets for the inaugural UTRGV South Padre Island Battle on the Beach, featuring men’s basketball games between UTRGV and Northern Arizona as well as Texas Tech and Incarnate Word on November 20th at the South Padre Island Convention Centre, can now be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. UTRGV will face Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. Texas Tech plays Incarnate Word at 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and include admission to both games. This is the first time UTRGV men's basketball is playing on South Padre Island since 2009, playing against Chattanooga and Bethune-Cookman as part of the South Padre Island Invitational. UTRGV also took part in the inaugural tournament in 2005, playing Texas Southern and Kent State. Previously, UTRGV faced SMU on South Padre Island in 2003-04. The addition of the UTRGV South Padre Island Battle of the Beach gives UTRGV two annual basketball events at the South Padre Island Convention Centre, along with women’s basketball’s UTRGV South Padre Island Classic scheduled for Dec. 17-18.
This is Texas Tech men’s basketball’s first visit to South Padre Island since 2010, when the Red Raiders faced Saint Mary’s and South Florida in the South Padre Island Invitational. This is the third time that Texas Tech has ever visited the Rio Grande Valley, along with a game at what was then known as the UTPA Fieldhouse in 1991. Texas Tech is coming off an 1811 season that ends with a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This will be the fifth-ever matchup between UTRGV and Northern Arizona and the first since Dec. 8, 2010. This is Northern Arizona’s first trip to South Padre Island and third trip to the Valley. The two previous games in the Valley were tight, as they were each decided by five points. This is Incarnate Word’s first-ever visit to South Padre Island and just its second visit to the Valley after previously visiting the Fieldhouse in 2006. Fans with questions can contact the UTRGV Athletics Ticket Office team of Seth Jones (956) 665-3877, Carlos Munoz (956) 665-3747, and Eddie Galvan (956) 665-3415 over the phone or through email at tickets@utrgv.edu.
