Dance for the Children to be held
By Herb Moering Christmas is a time for wonderful stories and a number of residents in the Lakewood RV Resort in Harlingen have one to tell. In fact, this will be the 28th Christmas for the Children party, slated for Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the park. It is a resumption of an effort that was interrupted last year by the pandemic. “We are providing a special Christmas for 14 less fortunate families whose children attend the nearby local elementary school,” according to Donna Wright, a Lakewood resident and Christmas for the Children

chairperson for the last 10 years. “Stuart Place Elementary School is where many of our Lakewood Winter Texans have spent precious hours mentoring students.” Among the mentors are Paul and Loretta Kruse, converted Texans originally from Nebraska, who “get a lot more from the kids,” according to Paul. “What makes it special is the kids want to get into the ‘Help One Student Today’ program.” The Kruses began helping children at Christmas through a “shoebox” project about 20 years ago. Five years later they entered the one-onone mentoring program, which they characterized as “a little extra boost (for the students) with skills in math and reading.” They also work on helping students raise their self-esteem. Loretta said her husband is very good at that, recalling one year when a mother explained how grateful she was for Paul’s encouragement of her young son. “Paul challenged the boy each day, telling him ‘He could do it.’ It changed that child’s outlook,” Loretta felt. Paul said the program is well organized by the school’s director, Rebecca Zaller, and there is a close relationship with teachers and administrators at the school, Loretta said. As many as 60 children will be expected to attend the party with their parents. For some families the children will act as interpreters as the parents don’t speak English. But it is a good time, according to Wright, thanks to Lakewood residents who have adopted a gift bag for one of the children, which will contain a variety of items including some requested gifts. In addition, some residents adopt a family, which means acting as the party host, Wright revealed. The hosts spend all their time with each individual family, greeting them

when they arrive and seeing that the kids get to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, have punch and cookies, pick out a stuffed animal or school supplies and each child receives a handmade age-appropriate quilt, crafted by the park quilters. Later as the family gets ready to leave, the host sees that there is a shopping cart full of foods to take home, which Wright’s husband, Steve, and other men from the park, picked up from Walmart, which “have always taken good care of us,” said Donna. This whole operation is a major effort, funded by five projects at the park. The last one this year is a “Dance for the Children” fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 8 that is open to the public. Donations are taken at the door for the dance, which will feature singer Leslie Blasing, a long-time entertainer in the Valley. Blasing, the professional entertainer from South Padre Island, works at restaurant venues and RV resorts, is donating her performance. She has won five Female Vocalist of the Year awards plus three Entertainer of the Year awards, based on voting by Winter Texans. She also won “The Lifetime Achievement Award for Female Vocalist” in 2018. Her music features songs of the 50s, 60, 70s, country, rock & roll, dance band and variety. During the pandemic, she was one of the first to go online with her show. In addition, the dance will include raffling off a hand-made quilt. Other fundraisers were a soup luncheon, bake sale and pancake breakfast. The participating Winter Texans are looking forward to the dance, but with even greater anticipation to the party, which is always filled with the spirit of the holiday season. “We receive a warm sense of the season in our hearts, serving God in His work,” said Donna.

Texas Master Naturalist certification program opens PHARR, TEXAS – Registration is open to join the 2022 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Hidalgo, Starr and Cameron county residents, over the age of 18, and Winter Texans are welcome. Texas Master Naturalist is a unique educational volunteer program sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “Texas Master Naturalist chapters are made up of volunteers with diverse interests who are involved in myriad activities to learn about, work with, and help educate others about the special land in which we live,” said chapter sponsor, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent Tony Reisinger. “When nature is left to itself, a unique ecosystem develops -- after hundreds of years,” Reisinger said. “Today, that unique ecosystem is what Texas Master Naturalists learn about and help sustain: the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and the critters that depend on it.” Classes are taught by local university professors and other field experts, including those from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and U.S. Department of Agriculture. Students attend weekly virtual classes each Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning January 4 through March 22. Attendees will need internet access, a computer, iPad or Android pad. Using a smartphone is not recommended. In addition, field trips are a required element of training that will provide unique access and learning opportunities. Field trips will be held in person following current county and departmental public health guidelines.
With social distancing, trainees will be able to join volunteer teams with other chapter members and work among local partners in activities at federal, state and local wildlife parks, coastal naturalist programs, cities, schools, and other public entities. There are hundreds of opportunities available to volunteers from studying ocelots and other mammals, to joining cutting-edge university studies, developing public native gardens, learning about native plants and habitat, citizen science projects, bird migration and shore birds to Gulf and beach inhabitants and trends. Texas Master Naturalists also offer free PowerPoint presentations to groups on a variety of native subjects; they train as docents and nature guides at local wildlife preserves. The chapter has monthly guest speakers the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are currently virtual but are still free and open to the public. Follow the chapter’s Facebook page at https://www. facebook.com/stbctmn to be notified when the meetings are broadcast live. Deadline to apply for the 2022 class is Friday, December 17. Class size is limited, so apply now. The cost is $150 and includes textbook, fees, t-shirt, name tag, and one-year membership. Full scholarships are available. Requests for scholarships are also due by December 17. To apply for the class, follow the instruction sheet on the New Class webpage at https://www.stbctmn.org/ the-next-class. To request a scholarship application, or if you have other questions, please contact the new class director, Anne Mayville, at nurse_anne@msn.com. Just like clockwork every season, the well-known Nikki Rowe sing and dance group Razz Ma Tazz is making their rounds to the parks again. Every year, the Winter Texans look forward to this group visiting their park. This talented group of high school students take their Christmas show on the road throughout the Valley, cheering up Winter Texan Park residents along the way. The group performs Christmas favorites along with other Christmas medleys that entertain the crowd. The Razz Ma Tazz group has been part of McAllen Nikki Rowe for just over 30 years. The group also performs in theatre productions throughout the year at the
high school. Be sure to catch one of their upcoming shows. It’s always entertaining. Following are the remaining Christmas shows: December 1, Siesta Village, 7 p.m.; December 2, Southern Comfort, 7 p.m.; December 5, Texas Trails, 2 p.m.; December 5, Bentsen Grove, 7 p.m.; December 6, Aladdin Villas, 7 p.m.; December 12, Winter Ranch, 2 p.m.; and December 12, Trophy Gardens, 7 p.m. Some of these events are also listed in our Parks Calendar. Be sure to call the park to see if you need to purchase a ticket – for example, the event at Aladdin Villas is $8/pp.
Angel Tree Program: Making Christmas dreams a reality
The Angel Tree Program, along with The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign, is one of The Salvation Army’s best-known Christmas efforts. More than 100,000 children across Texas will experience the joy of opening presents on Christmas morning thanks to generous donors and the help of The Salvation Army. “The Angel Tree program provides toys and clothing to children, seniors, and families who might be struggling to afford Christmas gifts this year. As we continue to navigate the lingering pandemic,
families are still putting their lives back together and trying to make ends meet,” said Lt. Aguirre of The Salvation Army. “Angels are available for adoption by community members and businesses, who in a small way will deliver the magic and message of Christmas to those in need.” The Salvation Army Angel Trees are located at Walmart, La Plaza Mall, Burks, Capital Plains, and online during the holidays. The trees are decorated with paper angels, each representing a child or See TREE pg. 17

Christmas is coming
Yes, Christmas is coming and there is so much to see and do. If you take part in only a few of the festivities, there is no doubt you will be in a Holiday Mood. Just imagine - beginning on December 3 - this Friday - you can choose almost any town in the Rio Grande Valley and see a grand Christmas Parade. The biggest and most impressive of all the parades might easily be the one in McAllen at the football stadium where giant helium filled characters adorn the floats. This parade is on Saturday, December 4 and begins at 7 p.m. There is an entry fee for this event. Tickets can be purchased at the McAllen CVB and will run anywhere from $10 to $25 depending on where you want to sit in the stadium. Check your local museums regarding the possibility of a Christmas Tree Forest display where locals have decorated trees with special Christmas themes. Some museums will ask for a donation, others will have a small entry fee. If South Padre Island and water activities are your thing then how

about a trip to South Padre Island to see their annual lighted Boat Parade. The best viewing would be from the area of Louie's Backyard or from the Painted Marlin restaurant area. An all-time favorite can be found at Brownsville with the display of miniature cottages all decorated for Christmas. This Holiday Village is now celebrating 12 years since the inception and is free and open to all. You can go day or night, but the best time is at night when all the lights are on. Thirty-three small cottages each with a different theme will be lit from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. each night. The exhibit will be available for patrons to visit through the end of the year. You may want to consider going early in the day with a visit to Gladys Porter Zoo as parking is at a premium later on. This way you will be assured of a parking place. To top it all off, just take a little time to pile the family into the car and take a drive through the neighborhood to see all the decorations. Enjoy all the festivities this December. Just remember the reason for the season.

wintertexantimes.com, by December 8. By submitting your favorites, you will be eligible to win free rounds of golf, dining, and more. Palm View Golf Course This course never gets old, and if it does it’s like a fine wine…you know the rest. You would never dream that this
beautiful and well-manicured golf course is a municipal course, but it is. From teeing off to finishing, you'll more than likely use every club in your bag, and maybe wish you had more. The greens run true, the pin placement is always challenging, and most holes will ask you – what's your strategy here? There
are plenty of holes where you determine how much of a bend you want to cut or if you really want to take a shortcut and go over these trees. Improvements and upgrades are a regular occurrence here even though it's hard to believe there could be any improvements. Some holes will show you a wide-open fairway but if you don't know which side to put the ball, you may be giving yourself extra distance to the hole – or an impossible next shot. And when you are done, have a hamburger – even the worst round is comforted after one of those from the kitchen here. Address: 2701 S. From wide open fairways where you can swing away to some tight shots within a magnificent setting, this municipal is sure to challenge the golfer in many ways. With the unpredictable wind – in both strength and direction – you may have to choose between three or four clubs. This is not a putt-putt course. IMAS Kicks off Annual Christmas Tree Forest display
The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) presents a community Holiday Market to kick off this year’s annual Christmas Tree Forest “Christmas in the RGV” on Sunday, December 5. The annual exhibition of trees presented by the IMAS Guild has been an IMAS tradition for half a century. Participants each year decorate their trees with hand-crafted ornaments and decorations according to a theme. This year’s theme is “Christmas in the RGV,” and participants include Junior League of McAllen, McAllen ISD, IDEA College Prep, Florence J. Scott Woman’s Club, and student groups from McAllen ISD, PSJA North, and IDEA College Prep among others. IMAS will be celebrating the holiday season and the opening of the
2021 Annual Christmas Tree Forest with a festive artist and artisan market on Sunday, December 5, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the local artists Valley Symphony Orchestra and the McAllen Creative Arts Incubator will participate in the event this year. The community is invited to support these local artists and artisans and then visit the Christmas Tree Forest and museum exhibitions including “Imagined Worlds: Exploring the Carlos Melguizo Collection” and the Inaugural IMAS Members Juried Art Show. Currently, admission is $3 for general admission and $1 for children 4-12 and Museums for All (WIC/ EBT). IMAS Members and children 0-3 are always free. Face coverings are required for visitors and staff. The museum offers advanced ticket registration at theimasonline.org to reserve a time for your visit.

senior who – without this program – may not receive a gift at Christmas. “We are forever grateful for the generous support of our community and local businesses that work alongside The Salvation Army to provide a joyous Christmas to those in need,” said Aguirre. Last year, 1,600 angels were available for adoption in McAllen, and this year we expect to have 1,800 children and seniors enrolled in the program. Gift distribution will take place at 209 N. Broadway at First Baptist Church, from 12/10/2021 to 12/17/2021. Volunteers are needed to help sort and pass out the items to families who will come to
collect them on distribution day. “Last year, there was a brandnew way to support The Salvation Army Angel Tree through Walmart Registry for Good,” said Aguirre. “Walmart has partnered with The Salvation Army to make it possible for donors to purchase needed items online that will be delivered directly to The Salvation Army. You can search for The Salvation Army McAllen at www.walmartangeltree.com and order items today that will benefit local families.” For more information about adopting an Angel or current volunteer opportunities, please call The Salvation Army at (956) 682-1468. Indigenous Immigration in the RGV
The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas to present “La inmigración indígena en el bajo río Bravo o Grande,” a Sunday Speaker Series Online bilingual presentation, at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 on Facebook Live. The presentation will cover the immigration patterns of the indigenous groups in the Rio Grande Delta. Due to different reasons, members of multiple ethnic groups of the continent immigrated to the lower part of the Rio Grande or Bravo during the second part of the 18th and 19th centuries, among which are Pames, Huastecos, Tlaxcaltecas, Tonkawas, Martin Salinas
Karankawas, Cherokees and, especially, the Comanches and Lipan Apache. The latter two ethnic groups began to prey on the lower part of the river shortly after the colonization of Nuevo Santander, on a seasonal basis. They are part of the cultural portent of the Great Plains and Prairies of the United States and Canada that emerged after the reintroduction of the horse in New Mexico in the late 16th century. The purpose of this presentation is to differentiate cultural adaptations of these ethnicities compared to that of the
natives of the Rio Grande. Salinas is the head of the Reynosa Municipal Archive and the author of the book “Indians of the Rio Grande Delta: Their Role in the History of Southern Texas and Northeastern Mexico.” He is known as the Municipal Chronicler of Reynosa due to his specialist research in ethnohistory and archaeology of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory. org. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community.

What stood *88880716* out immediately were the three different types of pasta and the variety of flavors that came along with this tongue-tantalizing dish. Each one of these “smaller” portions of their bigger brothers and sisters on the menu, was a meal in itself. The taste and the texture of each item ran the spectrum of joy and happiness. My biggest concern was how long it was going to take me to get my Sunday nap. All other worries just evaporated. Wednesdays from 4-7pm The hostess also recommended the cheese bread 10.99 plus tax as an appetizer – it was more like cheese pizza. A Buffet Includes Dessert large, round flattened pizza-like dish with warm bread, delicious melted cheese and some of the best marinara I’ve tasted, with chunks of tomato (956) 782- 3200 and cooked onion, it was a fabulous way to start Kingston Way 600 • Donna, TX the meal. The only thing was that I didn’t start the meal with it. With temperatures “dipping” to the high 50s and low 60s at this point, I thought a bowl of ADVERTISE WITH US wedding soup sounded like a perfect beginning. It was hot – not burn-your-face off hot, but hot. Any Call (956) 580-7800 chills left quickly like if sitting by a fireplace in the middle of winter – anywhere but here in the Valley. The soup, in a rich chicken broth was chock full of pasta, fresh herbs, and tiny meatballs. I can’t remember ever eating wedding soup, but this experience kicked off a trip where any stress was removed by pasta, cheese, sauce and more.

Zoo Nights and Lights begins Dec. 3rd
The Gladys Porter Zoo will be hosting its annual holiday celebration, Zoo Nights and Lights. This family-friendly event offers holiday spirit and fun for guests of all ages as well as a romantic setting for a date night. This year, the Gladys Porter Zoo is doing things a bit differently. In order to spread out attendance and give guests more opportunities to visit, Zoo Nights and Lights will be held for two weekends rather than one. The scheduled weekends are December 3rd-5th and 10th-12th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each night. The public is invited to stroll through the Zoo’s pathways, filled with brilliant light displays. There will be live musical and dance performances, Christmas karaoke and book readings. Visitors can shop for unique holiday gifts at the arts and crafts show and the Zoo gift shop.
Zoo staff will also be competing in a Christmas tree decorating contest, and guests will be able to vote for their favorite tree. Unfortunately, there will not be a cookie decorating station this year, but children will receive a coupon for a free cookie from McDonald’s. The price of admission for this event is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets for Zoo Nights and Lights are now available on the Zoo’s website, or they can be purchased at the gate. Zoo Members get in free with their membership cards. Guests can receive free admission by donating a new, unwrapped toy for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. The toy must be valued at $5 or higher—only one free admission will be granted per toy donation. For more information, please visit www.gpz.org or call (956) 5467187.

DECEMBER 1, 2021 RAMBLINGS
From about your park, or a special person, include photos we can use for publication. Our readers love to see photos, and they love to see photos of themselves. It gives them something to smile about. Several parks have said how they are welcoming their winter visitors back to their parks and how happy they are to see their Canadian visitors return. This year’s Winter Texan season is looking bright, and we are ready for it. La Floresta RV in Mercedes says their park is like one big family. They are welcoming residents nearly every day. While they have their golf course, they also have plenty of other activities for their visitors to enjoy. Other parks, like Aladdin Villas, are making quilts right now for a colonia in Penitas. And another park is holding a fundraiser to give several families in their community a Christmas this year. This is the type of news we love hearing. How are you welcoming your visitors to your park? Is there an activity or group in your park doing something outstanding for the community, or your park? We would love to know. Send any news items to news@wintertexantimes.com.

********** On another note, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a lazy one, and I enjoyed that. After the hustle and bustle of the last few weeks, it was nice to just relax and be able to put the food in the oven and just sit and wait. It was just my husband, two kids and I. No one to entertain this year – so it was really quiet. Sometimes, during those quieter holidays, it’s nice to reflect on those you miss, or past holiday memories. I always love to reminisce about the holidays of my childhood, or when my kids were much younger. These were times I miss because of the people that were there, people that have since passed away. It makes me think about my grandparents and the love that always filled their home. If you take something with you through this holiday season, remember to be thankful for the memories. For the times you were able to relish the joy of those around you. For the times you spent with loved ones that aren’t here anymore. Share the love. Share the thankfulness. Share yourself with those around you. Make the holiday season one to remember years from now.

MHM accepting quilt entries
Heritage Stars (2015 MHM Quilt entry)
Gathered at the Manger (2015 MHM Quilt entry)
The Mission Historical Museum will soon be accepting entries for its Sixteenth Annual Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in three categories: Hand-quilted bed quilts, Machine-quilted bed quilts, and Wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and yearround residents. Quilts will be exhibited in the Museum’s Post Office building. Quilts and wall hangings exhibit must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in/first accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all quilts. To allow for the broadest representation, participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second, and third places in each category. Best-of-show and Viewers’
Choice ribbons will also be awarded. Quilts may be entered by submitting an entry form, which is available at the Museum. Entry forms and quilts will be accepted at the Museum from Tuesday, Dec. 7 through Thursday, Jan 6, 2022, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Museum will be closed Dec. 23, 24, 25, and 31; and Jan. 1. Quilts may be pre-registered, and the quilts themselves may be delivered on any date during this time, through the Jan. 6 deadline. If you would like to enter your quilt, you are urged to register early, because space is limited. The exhibit opens on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, and continues through Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022. An awards reception and Turning of the Quilts program will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty in downtown Mission. Admission is free. For information, call the Museum at (956) 580-8646.
