This month seems to be going by fast. Before we know it, the new year is going to be here. While we wait for that to come, it’s nice driving around and seeing all the lights around town. Lighted Christmas parades have become a huge thing over the years. I hope you have been able to go out and enjoy one or two near you. Many have already taken place but are keeping their city park lights

Quilters fulfill a need in Penitas

Dee Pemberton sat in her corner, on her own, just plugging away at sewing quilts. “Then we found out what she was doing,” Catherine Raftery said. “And we joined her immediately.” Pemberton was using donations of fabric from members at her church to make quilts to donate for the children living in the Tent City in Brownsville. Last December, Raftery, Pemberton and the remainder of quilters from the Aladdin Villas in Mission, donated 72 quilts to the organization Mateo 25:35.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

A Tejano Christmas Carol is back in Pharr It was the night before Christmas and a distasteful Rio Grande Valley Attorney by the name of Ezequiel Codos, played by 18-year-old Frankie Hooton, from Weslaco, was working late in his office while his overworked and underpaid employee Pablo Gomez, played by 16-yearold Raul Ceron from McAllen, typed away the water right contracts for Mr. Codos before heading home that Christmas Eve. Suddenly a charity worker comes in and Codos runs him out with snarls and complaints. He also throws out his nephew Beto who stops by to invite the old miser to Christmas dinner…and so goes the familiar story but with a twist of characters. This contemporary version set in the Rio Grande Valley, includes the appearance of Tejano singer Selena, as one of the three spirits, played by 12-year-old Brooklyn Dillard from Weslaco, and plenty of other tweaked characters that make-up the south Texas setting for this classic Dickens tale. “This play returns for its 5th year in a row,” said Pharr Community Theater Co. Producer, Pedro Garcia. “But this time all the roles, except two parts, will be played by teenagers and children making it fun, an-

imated if you will, for the entire family.” All the youngsters in this quick, two-act play, in English, are under the guidance of director Seres Jaime Magaña from McAllen. “I’ve directed the play the last two years with adults and children, but this time the challenge was with a younger cast, and I was up for it”, said Magaña, a 30-year-old UTRGV graduate, husband and father of four. “I love the voices of the kids and their demeanor in these roles. They add a new dimension to spirit, while keeping true to their interpretation. Everyone is going to have a blast”. This time at the helm, playing the role of Codos is Frankie Hooton, who is also the president of his student council at IDEA Weslaco Pike College-Prep High. “Frankie has been in this play

a couple of times in the past, playing other parts, and in several other PCT productions.” added Garcia. “He’s one of our young veterans and has improved each time as an actor. He’s entering college soon but before he does, he’s taking on his biggest role yet, and he’s going to be delightful,” said Garcia. “Playing the role of Codos takes a lot of time and emotion, conveying this incredibly, stingy, hateful man who detests holidays, especially Christmas… because of choices and things that happened in his past, and then showing his transformation, turning a new leaf is taxing, and it takes time to get it right, it’s challenging, but I’m enjoying the experience”, added young Hooton. “There are nearly 18 youngsters involved in the telling of the story, each adding their embellished per-

sonality, and some doubling parts. It’s an experience of a lifetime for them,” concluded Garcia. The play runs from December 14 through December 19 including two outdoor shows and three indoor shows, all in Pharr. Tickets will only be sold at each show starting one hour before curtain. At the outdoor shows, donations will be accepted as your admission, pay whatever you wish to give. At the indoor shows, tickets will be $5 per person and/or two tickets for $5 for those under thirteen or $3 each. Here’s the performance schedule: Tuesday, December 14, Downtown Pharr Amphi-Theater (Outdoors); 118 S. Cage Blvd., Pharr; 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, Pharr Vanguard Nature Center (Outdoors); 1025 S. Richmond Dr., Pharr; 7 p.m. Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18, DRC Center (Indoors); 850 W Dicker Rd./Las Milpas, Pharr; 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 19, Pepe Salinas Auditorium; 1011 W. Kelly Ave., Pharr; 3 p.m. For more information, please visit the Pharr Community Theater Co. Facebook page or text (956) 6559308.

Leah Longoria, Azura Murad, Camila Rivera & Jeremias Martinez sit at the dinner table in rehearsals for A Tejano Christmas Carol, playing at four different locations in Pharr from December 14-19, 2021.

By Herb Moering It was a perfect night for the “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” parade in Edinburg on Friday and Tomas Magdeleno was enjoying it fully while dressed in a complete Santa suit. The young man from Edinburg relaxed with family members as multiple parade units passed the reviewing stand on South Closner Boulevard. The spectators lining the route sported lots of Christmas wear including Santa hats, antlers and lighted crowns and clothing with lights. Children were in abundance and happy to receive candy given out by those walking along the boulevard. Edinburg Mayor Robert Molina was on the city’s float and paused briefly to give a few comments about the “Night of Lights” parade. Besides the many school, commercial and community floats, there were the high school marching bands, dance groups, a dozen motorcycles, customized autos, cheerleaders and a couple high school athletic teams. And one of the best aspects to the night were all the lights on the entries, plus many of the floats had holiday music to add to the fun of the evening. Of course, the one person just about everyone was looking for was that jolly old fellow, Santa, who arrived in the traditional mode, on the Edinburg aerial ladder truck. Judging of business, civic and school divisions were held just before the start of the parade, with trophies

During the parade the jumbotron screen at the reviewing stand carried messages about other Edinburg events, such as the free “Holiday on the Promenade” now running through Jan. 2 and the Police Blue Santa drive-through toy giveaway at 9 a.m. Dec. 18. Holiday at the Promenade The City of Edinburg is bringing back the joy of the holiday season with several fun-filled events. Last week they held their Lighting of the Tree where all the city’s light displays were lit up in the city’s downtown promenade. The tree and lights will remain lit for the entire month of December. With the light displays at the promenade, the city invites visitors to enjoy the Holiday at the Promenade, with a self-guided tour of the holiday displays throughout the City Hall Promenade that extends from University Drive near 4th Street all the way to 9th Street and around the Edinburg Food Truck Park (Promenade Courtyard) and the Edinburg City Hall. Enjoy the lights all month long with friends and family; the Promenade Courtyard lights will not be available on December 10th due to a private event. Then join the city for the Edinburg Christmas Market happening Saturday, December 11th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the City Hall Courtyard and Promenade. From the Cheap Seats – from reindeer to elves, trees with icicle lights or their trunks wrapped in lights – to the tunnel of lights that welcomed guests and, of course, to the main character of the story, the Christmas tree of white lights. When the countdown ended and the lights snapped on, it was hard not to notice the symbolism of the difference between last year and this year – and the ooohs and ahhs of both children and adults could he heard from all over the park. “It was so dark and gloomy last year because of the pandemic,” San Benito Public Information Director Dave Favila said. “To have this back is so exciting to share with the community. Judging by the turnout, it’s clear that people are ready to come out and celebrate and get back into the Christmas spirit.” The Park will have the lights on display through the rest of the year and on Friday city officials expect a large turnout after the annual Christmas Parade on Sam Houston. “This has been an annual event and we are very happy to do it especially this time,” San Benito Parks and Recreation Director Ramon Rodriguez said. “The community really came out and they are enjoying it. All the schools participated, it’s a good event, and we went all out this year.” More than 100 participants/groups had registered to take place in this week’s parade as well. “Everyone can follow us and all the events on our Facebook page,” said Favila, adding that Winter Texans had already participated in some of the events as he welcomed them to the parade, the park and more. “We’ve been trying to get the word out to the Winter Texans and let them know that this is going on. “Keep looking for us, we have events happening again.”

San Benito lights up

SAN BENITO – One year ago, children were studying from home, adults were working from home and a new hybrid way of life was taking shape as COVID-19 left an unbridled path of both fear and devastation around the world. Even Santa stayed begrudgingly cuddled up in his North Pole home along with the Missus, the elves, and the reindeer, knowing full well that all rooftops and chimneys had become off limits, even if he wore a mask. Last week, however, a much-needed spirit lifter and highly anticipated Christmas tree lighting in San Benito brought nearby and surrounding communities together to Heavin Park in droves. The annual event welcomed more than an estimated 1,000 people, many of whom were excited to return and take part in an activity that was just another step toward reaching normalcy, whatever their normal might be. San Benito resident Sylvia Vallejo had been to the annual lighting on many joyous occasions, often, bringing one or more of her grandchildren to perform on stage in front of hundreds in an outdoor amphitheater style setting. Friday was no different during a perfect evening as Vallejo brought her granddaughter Grace to perform a dance with classmates from Dr. Cash Elementary. “I’m usually here every year,” she said. “My other grandkids have performed at these events and it’s great that it’s back. It’s a nice thing for the community.” Children from many of the area schools performed, singing or dancing, to a crowd of parents, city officials, law enforcement and other community residents, who also enjoyed a beautiful sunset, snacks and the highlight of the evening – the lighting of the Christmas tree, and entire park

QUILTERS From pg. 1

“She was just on her own, not telling any of us what she was doing,” said Raftery, who organizes the Aladdin Villas quilting group. “She was just making quilts and making more quilts. Eventually we found out what she was doing and joined her. “We handed 72 quilts for these babies and some of the children were just hugging their quilts.” After donating those quilts, the group began working on quilts for this year. They just didn’t have a place to donate too. They reached out to Colette Walsh, a Mission resident who is a liaison between many who want to give and many who are in need. She

connected with Proyecto Desarrollo Humano and Sisters Caroline and Fatima in Penitas. The community, Walsh said, lives below the poverty line and, if one visits the area “you’ll see kids getting washed with the water hose outside. They aren’t doing it out of fun, but necessity,” she said. “They’ve done amazing things out there and it has a been a very meaningful organization for me,” Walsh said. “They have a thrift store out there where the residents can go and buy things they need – like nice Levi’s for maybe $2. They sell it to give the families ownership in their community, the pride of ownership and that ability to provide for others.” So, when there’s a need, it’s the

thrift store’s director Libby who is, as Walsh called her, “the connector.” “She knows so many people out there,” Walsh said. “She’s the connector.” And now all of them are a makeshift assembly line that begins with the 12 ladies who form the Aladdin Villages sewing/quilting group. Raftery and her husband moved from Ireland to South Texas nine years ago. Not a stranger to sewing, Raftery would create costumes during Halloween for her children and once those children reached high school she would make the costumes for the characters of the high school play. “I’ve been sewing all my life and always had a sewing machine but never did anything like this,” she

said. “There’s a peacefulness to it. Sometimes it’s aggravating when you’re doing something complicated, but for the most part it’s just relaxing and gives you something to focus on.” A room filled with beautiful quilts, blankets and other projects is a tell-tale sign of the commitment the group has while working to serve the local community for those in need, along with working on some of their own personal projects. “That first round of blankets were made with love,” Raftery said. “We all have so much but we’re always in pursuit of more.” For more information on Proyecto Desarrollo Humano, you can find them on Facebook.

Hidalgo celebrates Christmas

The little town of Hidalgo takes center stage every December celebrating in a big way with the Hidalgo Festival of Lights. Festivities began on December 1 with the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the Arena Box Office. The celebration continues through January 2nd but will be closed on December 24th, December 31st and January 1st. This year will mark 30 years that the town has gone all out to present a trail of lights that is now two miles long. The event has become so popular that a bigger area was needed this year for all the displays and booths. Be prepared to travel to the Payne Arena for this spectacular event. Narrated trolley rides will be offered for a small per person fee or if the trolley is not your thing you can drive the same trail in your private vehicle with the purchase of a

special ticket. No buses, motorcycles, limos, or motor homes can be accommodated on the trail. Anyone hungry or ready to purchase art objects won’t be disappointed. Vendors have set up booths for your shopping pleasure. When you tire of shopping, take a break, and enjoy some of the offerings presented by the many food booths. To many the best of all is the live entertainment that begins around 7:30 p.m. On some nights the entertainment may start a little later. Singers and dancers all decked out for Christmas will surely put you in the Holiday Spirit. All activities are outside so dress warmly. If driving at night is a concern, you might want to check to see what local tour companies are offering tours to this festive occasion. Whatever you do, visit the Hidalgo Festival of Lights. You will be glad you did.

We Have Your

In between each song, Razz members tell a fun story through skits. Remaining shows are December 8, Bit O Heaven, 7 p.m.; December 12, Winter Ranch, 2 p.m.; and December 12, Trophy Gardens, 7 p.m.

Rainbow Rooms, Raindrop Rooms and Hero’s Closet – on-site emergency resource centers designed to provide CPS caseworkers with emergency supplies for the children and families they serve. This year, their 10th Annual Christmas Toy Drive, helps them in making sure every child still believes in Santa, no matter their circumstances. The toy drive supplies

toys to the most vulnerable members of the community. “We just want all of our kiddos to experience a little bit of Christmas,” said Emma Menchaca, a Rainbow Room coordinator. “Sometimes the needs of the family don’t always involve abuse,” she added. “If a child is suffering due to economic impact to a family, they can find themselves involved with the

agency,” she said. “We are here to help provide hope. That is what we ask of our community.” Menchaca’s region covers 19 counties for South Texas. This is why the need of toys and other items are of such a big need during this time. Toys will be accepted through December 17th. Coats and Blankets are being accepted through December 15. They ask that all donations be unwrapped and that you remember the teenagers in need as well. They need items for ages 0-17. Time is limited, you only have a week, but if you decide to be a drop off location, they will pick up the items from your park. All CPS of-

fices in the Valley are drop off locations. Menchaca said to call her for any additional information, to sponsor a family, or to arrange a pick up. You can reach her at (956) 270-2284. Due to the sometimes-high volume of calls, she encourages you to leave a voicemail if you don’t get through to her. Menchaca noted that they love the Winter Texan community and have really appreciated the help they have received from you in the past. “Thank you in advance for all your love and support you have given the kiddos over the years. We don’t know where we would be without your love,” she said. “Thank you for believing in us and for gifting hope to our children and families of the Rio Grande Valley.”

Las Vegas Cafe Since 1964

Great lunch specials at Las Vegas Cafe

I’m not a fan of lunch specials. I believe that you don’t Try Our get the same portion Famous – or a large enough Enchiladas – portion. And, as y’all know, I like big portions. (956) 423 - 6749 • Mon - Sat: 11am - 9pm I, however, went 1101 W. Harlingen Ave • Harlingen, TX 78550 against my longterm – and stubborn – belief and decided to check out one of the lunch specials at the Las Vegas Café. This long-time and highly popular restaurant in Harlingen now has me believing I’ve been wrong all these years. As I sat at the counter and ordered my plate, which included two cheese enchiladas and a pair of tacos – one beef fajita and the other carne guisada – I couldn’t help but notice the line still out front at 2 p.m. on a weekday. About six to eight people were patiently waiting for a table. But the line wasn’t stagnant as the host and servers kept people moving like a factory, but without the stressful feeling. It was a work of art. When my plate arrived, topped with fresh onions, rice and a jalapeño, and a couple cups of salsa, I was highly impressed. The plate was large and the conWINTER TEXAN SPECIAL tents on it left no white space to be seen – just food, and more food. FREE FRIES The enchiladas were delicious. Then I bit into my 1/2 Basket fajita taco – and the tortilla as I’ve known it forever With Park Badge changed. I’m the guy who doesn’t understand why people wait so long in lines for tortillas. Before this day I rarely noticed any difference other than soft, or Weslaco doughy or crispy. 1015 S. Inter. Blvd. • Weslaco, TX 78596 • 956-520-8783 Something about these two tortillas though was Mission clearly…special. 409 N. Bryan RD. STE 104 • Mission, TX 78572 • 956-205-2940 I asked one of the kind ladies working about their tortillas. She said, “they’re the best, and they are homemade.” I humbled myself. I didn’t know what made these tortillas so special. Usually, I’m focused more on the contents, and trying to not spill them. And while the beef fajita and the carne guisada were delicious, there was something about the tortillas that made me start thinking about their value as more than just a place-holder for the food. On this day, it seemed that the tortillas enhanced the flavor of the food and vice versa. 2 0 % O F F E N T I R E G U E ST C H EC K One coupon, per table, per visit. Women in Aviation exhibit opens

Last week, the Brownsville-SPI International Airport held a ribbon cutting for the opening of a photography exhibit, “Women in Aviation and Space History.” This exhibit celebrates the accomplishments by women since the early days of aviation, to space exploration to recent commercial space flights. It consists of 35 images and will remain on display through January 22, 2022. According to the Smithsonian website, National Air and Space visitors frequently ask, “where are the

women pilots?” The answer is that they are in nearly every gallery of the museum at the Smithsonian. Although women have flown since 1908, nearly all of them were restricted to general aviation – private planes, or support jobs (prior to the 1970s) – and the museum’s exhibits reflect those historical roles. However, women have now gained full access to military and commercial cockpits, as well as the Space Shuttle and aerospace technology, and as the Smithsonian updates old

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

and creates new exhibits, they review and include the growing contributions of women throughout their museum. Now they are bringing part of that history to this special exhibit in Brownsville. The Exhibit is on the second floor of the airport. It is located at 700 Amelia Earhart Dr., in Brownsville. You can learn more about women in aviation history at the Smithsonian website - https://airandspace.

si.edu/exhibitions/women-aviation-and-space-history. The exhibit is a project organized by the Consulate of Mexico in Brownsville in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, City of Brownsville, the Secretaria de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA), the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art and the Direccion Ejecutiva de Diplomacia Cultural de Mexico.

Take the Red Kettle Challenge Christmas is fast approaching. Shoppers will soon be greeted by the familiar sound of The Salvation Army bells ringing at stores. But did you know that you can set up your own virtual fundraiser and be part of the Red Kettle Challenge without even leaving your house? This is a simple and fun way to engage your family and friends while supporting the red kettle campaign, The Salvation Army’s major fundraising event of the year. The Red Kettle Challenge provides a new, online option to the tra-

ditional Red Kettles that raise funds supporting those in need. “You will still see friendly bell ringers and Red Kettles at area store fronts and retailers,” said Lt. Aguirre of The Salvation Army. “However, the Red Kettle Challenge makes it easy for people to set up their own virtual kettles from the comfort of their own homes. You set your fundraising goal, share the link to your kettle with friends, family, and work colleagues, and challenge them to donate. This year has been difficult for many in our community, and you can be part of

making a difference to ensure The Salvation Army has the necessary funds to help all year long.” To take the Red Kettle Challenge and set up a virtual kettle, go to www.salvationarmytexas.org/ McAllen/. Select “Take the Red Kettle Challenge,” register as an individual or team, set a goal, and get to work promoting your kettle. “Less people are carrying cash and visiting the mall and stores these days. A Virtual Kettle provides a great way for people to show their support for The Salvation Army without having to leave the house,” said Aguirre. “Every dollar raised through the Red Kettle campaign makes it possible for us to provide shelter. Challenge your friends, family and coworkers to support your online kettle and provide help and hope right here in McAllen.” You can choose a different city to support when you visit their website and set up your Virtual Kettle. Salvation Army red kettles will be again stationed outside of local

17

stores and businesses Monday-Saturday from mid-November until Christmas Eve. “All bell ringers will be equipped with personal protective equipment again this Christmas season, ensuring the safety of donors and shoppers, along with our volunteers,” said Aguirre. “With more individuals and families coming to us for help than ever before, please don’t forget to give to The Salvation Army red kettles this season.” Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Red Kettle campaign throughout November and December. It’s easier than ever for individuals, families, groups and businesses to sign up this year! You can select the location, day and time you would like to ring when you visit www.RegisterToRing.com. We hope to see you at the kettle! For more information about The Salvation Army, please call (956) 682-1468, and as always, secure donations can be made online at www. salvationarmytexas.org/McAllen/.
