Hello readers! If you don’t pay attention to our header on our paper each week, you wouldn’t know…. We have been publishing the Winter Texan Times since 1987. So, we are celebrating 35 years this season. What started as a bi-weekly paper by June Brann and Jim Brunson, has grown to a weekly paper during the Winter Texan season – October through March.

Students project supports foster kids

The idea came to the duo of Emma Zamora and Jaelin Lopez last spring during their junior year at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS). With the return of in-person instruction and the start of their senior year this year, the team has worked their idea into a community service project for their DECA organization. Zamora and Lopez discovered that children in unfortunate situations to include foster care and safe homes often struggle in school and getting the materials they need to be See STUDENTS pg. 7 INDEX

Golf is not just a game to enjoy. It’s an entire experience to be a part of, especially at Stuart Place Country Club and Shary Municipal Golf Course. At least that’s what the voters decided in the annual Winter Texans Times Favorite Golf voting. Stuart Place, a nine-hole course, located at 155 Highland Dr. in Harlingen, won five of the seven categories that people could vote on. Those categories include Favorite Hole (No. 9), Favorite Amenities (the clubhouse), Favorite Putting See GOLF pg. 14

Winter Texans enjoy Alamo Parade

By Herb Moering The nippy, breezy weather didn’t deter spectators lining the route Saturday night for the City of Alamo’s lighted Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony. While most of those watching the 43 entries pass by were bundled up in sweaters and coats, Del Engrisch skipped the extra coverings since she had arrived that day leaving behind 16 inches of snow and the accompanying cold in Minnesota. Her husband, Warren, missed the snowstorm because he had arrived three See ALAMO pg. 16

The third annual Illumina Fest is a five-night event from December 14 to 18, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlán. At this year’s Illumina Fest, enjoy artists who have created installations for the night trails. The event will proudly feature amazing local and regional artists and performers every evening. Quinta Mazatlán will be lighting over 3,000 luminaria bags. The word Luminaria means “festival lights” and traditionally people lit small bonfires to welcome visitors over the holidays. The Southwestern custom of using Luminaria bags is thought to have originated with Spanish merchants who discovered paper lanterns on their travels to China. The one-way half mile illuminated trail guides visitors past light shows, art installations, community performers and holiday treats. Artist San Juanita Garcia has painted over 100 Spirit Sticks to be lit with neon lights. Enjoy street art by Wendy B Lara titled “Angel Statue”. Take a selfie at the new mural of wings painted by artist Celerino Castillo III. Be amazed by the Lighted Bronze Statues created by sculptor Douglas Clark. Enjoy different performances every evening from groups such as Indigo Creative, School of Rock, South Texas Fuzion, McAllen Gold-

en Larks, RGV Tuba Christmas, Deborah Case Dance Academy, Perez Elementary Choir, Dance Mission, Rolando Pacheco Dance Studio, Las Palmas Ballet Folklorico, Poet - Kelley Sweeney, DJ Queen Killah Bee and more. Walk the trails and munch on holiday snacks from vendors in the courtyard preparing kettle corn, spicy candy, elote in a cup, candied pecans, beef jerky and make your own s’mores. The historic adobe home will feature an exhibit titled “Nature at Night” with artists Amanda De La Garza, Vanessa Alvarado, Celerino Castillo, Gaby De La Fuente, Agustin J. Villarreal, Jessica Monroe and more. Come dressed in lights and help spread the holiday spirit enjoyed around the world. Art installations will honor Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, Diwali, Native American Traditions and Nature at Night. Timed entry tickets are available only online at www.ticketleap.com. Search for “Quinta Mazatlan-Illumina Fest.” Adult tickets are $10, children $5 and tots two and under are free. Please call Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 681-3370 for more information. Enjoy Illumina Fest and celebrate the light of the world.

The opportunity to learn about the amazing habitat of the Rio Grande Valley and how to help preserve it comes along once a year. December 17 is the deadline to apply for the January 2022 training. The South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist invites residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans in Hidalgo, Starr and Cameron County to join this unique educational volunteer pro-

gram to become a certified Texas Master Naturlist. Texas Master Naturalist is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Students attend weekly virtual classes each Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning January 4 through March 22. Attendees will need internet access, a computer, iPad or

Android pad. Using a smartphone is not recommended. In addition, field trips are a required element of training that will provide unique access and learning opportunities. Field trips will be held in person following current county and departmental public health guidelines. Classes are taught by local university professors and other field experts, including those from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are hundreds of local opportunities available to volunteers from helping develop public native pollinator gardens, training as docents and nature guides at local wildlife preserves, to undertaking citizen science projects, and joining programs about bird migration and bird counts to studying shore birds, the Gulf and beach inhabitants and trends. With social distancing, trainees will be able to join volunteer teams with other chapter members and work among local partners in activities at federal, state, and local

The Food Bank RGV is excited to announce its first Christmas Posada: Calditos, Conchas y Cafecitos, will take place onsite at the beautiful and historic Valley Fruit Co. building on December 16. The Christmas Posada is the Food Bank RGV’s newest community event and aims to raise funds to provide even more holiday meals for the community this season. “Hunger does not take a holiday and unfortunately, we are currently seeing more families reach out for help this season. We know that having children home during the holiday vacation will put a strain on already tight family finances—we just want to make sure children are fed and that no one has to go without a meal,” said Libby A. Saenz, Food Bank RGV CEO. The Food Bank RGV’s inaugural Christmas Posada will feature local restaurants that will showcase their traditional caldos and soups (pozole, menudo, fideo, caldito talpeno, frijoles charros, chili) while local coffee shops and bakeries display their best holiday pastries and warm seasonal drinks. Guests will enjoy live entertainment from local mariachi bands and folklorico dance teams while they shop a winter wonderland va-

riety of boutiques and local artisan vendors. Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on the various silent auction items, with proceeds supporting the holiday meals campaign. The Food Bank RGV would like to thank the RGV Activity Directors Association for supporting the Christmas Posada at the Silver Reindeer sponsorship level. This support will enable the food bank to provide 12,500 meals for the community this season. The Food Bank RGV’s Inaugural Christmas Posada will take place December 16, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Food Bank RGV located at 724 N. Cage Blvd in Pharr. The cost to attend is $25 per person and includes tastings from all participating restaurants, bakeries, and café shops. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the posada or in advance online at www.foodbankrgv.com For more information, contact Philip Farias, Manager of Corporate Engagement & Special Events, at (956) 904-4513 or by email at pfarias@foodbankrgv.com. The Fishers are at it Again

Winter Texans Jean and Steve Fisher delivered toys to Lone Star National bank on South Padre Island. Bank president Martin Infante accepted the toys. The Fishers were told that the bank would match the toys donated. Over 150 toys were donated by the Fishers. This is the Fisher’s 33rd year of giving to under privileged families. After growing up in foster homes in upper New York Jean said she is blessed for being able to give back. The Fishers home base is in Northern Iowa and have been coming to the Island for six years enjoying the beach and warm weather. Next week they are buying gifts for 25 special needs children in two different elementary schools. The Fishers said they can’t wait to see the expressions on their faces. They were invited by Mr. Infante to join him and his son who will be playing Santa Claus. One of the elementary special needs classes is taught by his wife. “We are fortunate to be blessed and have a friend in bank president Martin Infante. Merry Christmas to all.”

Submitted by Monarchs Across Georgia Committee We asked and, thankfully, you answered. Now we need your help again. Last winter, volunteers from across the Southeast and Gulf states provided more than 5,800 observations of monarch butterflies. This winter, the partnership of universities, agencies and other organizations called Monarchs Overwintering in Southeastern States is requesting the public’s continued involvement in reporting sightings. Sonia Altizer, a University of Georgia ecology professor and director of Project Monarch Health, said the information can help scientists determine if these iconic but declining butterflies “can overwinter as non-breeding adults in the southern U.S. and how this might affect future population numbers.” The monitoring will also help document how winter-breeding activity might be affecting the annual migration to Mexico. Understanding migration and overwintering behavior is crucial to conserving monarchs, a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Thousands of monarchs stream across the South each fall on their way to wintering grounds in central Mexico. In the spring, this eastern population of the butterfly returns to the U.S. and Canada to breed. But not all monarchs migrate to Mexico. Volunteer observations over the past two decades have helped scientists better understand how and why some monarchs breed throughout the winter in the southern U.S. Scattered reports also suggest that some monarchs can overwinter in coastal regions in a non-breeding state, similar to their wintering behavior in Mexico. The goal this winter is to collect

more data for a growing partnership that has expanded to include organizations such as Florida Natural Areas Inventory and the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. Gabriela Garrison of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said the monarch is a species of greatest conservation need in North Carolina’s Wildlife Action Plan, as in the action plans of many other states. “So monitoring overwintering populations and learning more about their behavior is critical.” The public is encouraged to report monarch sightings from Dec. 1-March 1 in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Observations are entered in Journey North’s online data portal, where they are transformed into real-time mapping visualizations of monarch migration and breeding. Journey North is an organization designed to engage people across North America in tracking wildlife migration and seasonal change. Program coordinator Nancy Sheehan said the public has a long history of being a part of scientific discoveries. “Journey North is excited to provide a platform for engaging citizen scientists in this targeted monitoring effort.” Susan Meyers, co-chair of Monarchs Across Georgia agreed. “Volunteers are vital to this effort. If you enjoy being outdoors and exploring your local ecosystem, this is an easy activity that can be done alone or with your family.” Wildlife biologist Anna Yellin of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said project partners are grateful to all who reported sightings last winter. “When we come together as a community as we have with this effort, we stand a better chance of protecting the monarch butterfly for future generations.” How to take part • Step 1: Create a free account at journeynorth.org/reg. • Step 2: Learn how to report monarch sightings at journeynorth. org/monarchs. • Step 3: From Dec. 1-March 1, submit monarch observations at journeynorth.org/sightings.

Celebrate Las Posadas

All of our days should be special days. But if you are observing today as it is observed in Mexico, then this is a very, very special day. It is the day that most families in Mexico begin to celebrate Las Posadas. The word "posada" in Spanish translates to "inn" in English. Las Posadas then is the reenactment of Joseph and Mary searching for an inn where the Child Jesus could be born. Every night from December 15 until Christmas Eve, neighborhoods throughout Mexico will be celebrating Las Posadas. Fortunately, we live in a multi-cultural area where many of the families with roots in Mexico

continue to carry on the tradition of celebrating Las Posadas. Traditionally, Las Posadas was celebrated for ten consecutive nights. In the United States, Las Posadas is sometimes celebrated only on one given night. Celebrating a posada is a neighborhood affair...a tradition in which the young and the old participate. The youngest often has a special perch riding on the shoulders of his daddy as family and neighbors walk behind Mary and Joseph. An angel may be leading the entire group. If a donkey is available Mary may be seated on the donkey that is led by Joseph. A special song is sung in Spanish by

the participants as they walk from house to house asking for lodging. Time after time they are refused. Finally at a predetermined house they are admitted. Once admitted, the party begins - most often hot chocolate, cookies and tamales are offered to all. Perhaps for the

young ones there will be a pinata filled with candies and treats. Hopefully you will be invited to participate in a Posada. Consider it an honor if you are invited to this special Christmas celebration. The experience will open your heart to the true meaning of Christmas.

Green, Favorite 19th Hole (again, the clubhouse) and Favorite Menu Item (hot dog). “That’s just great to hear,” said Jim Barkau, one of three course owners. “It’s a friendly place to go. Everyone gets together after a round of golf and goes by, especially at 4 p.m., for Happy Hour. Sometimes

there will be 35-40 people there.” Hole 9 is probably the biggest challenge on the course, with a resaca that has a tendency to have a sweet tooth for golf balls. “There’s a lot of balls in there,” Barkau said. For those who think a hot dog is just a hot dog, Stuart Place would beg to differ. Barkau said the hot dog

Ron Tilsworth and company

is a quarter-pounder and his wife chops up the onions and it’s cooked on a George Foreman Grill. Barkau said one of the reasons he bought into the golf course ownership was due to the clubhouse. When driving into Stuart Place, the clubhouse is inviting and friendly. Inside, the people are the same. Some might be playing cards, others dominoes or just talking about the day’s events. It’s like Cheers but with a golf course attached. “I go to the clubhouse three or four times a day,” said Barkau, who’s an Illinois native and has lived in the Valley since 1997 with his wife. “Everybody gets along, and everybody knows each other.” While the course has the “Country

Dean Brown

Club” title, it is open to the public. In fact, Barkau said he encourages golfers from all over the Valley to check out the little piece of Harlingen paradise. “We have tournaments once or twice a month,” he said. “Everyone is welcome. Afterwards we’ll have spaghetti or burgers or pizza. This Saturday there are 50 or 60 people signed up to play. It’s just a good time.” It’s a good time that starts at the clubhouse, goes to the golf course, then back to the clubhouse. Or, for non-golfers, it starts and stays at the clubhouse. “We want the public to come,” Barkau said. “It’s a home away from home.”

Shary Municipal Golf Course

SHARY MUNICIPAL Mario Flores, Shary Municipal’s director of golf, was elated to hear that the course won the other two categories – Favorite Driving Range and Favorite Clubhouse. He said the key is knowing the patrons and catering to them. “We’re in the process of redoing the driving range and the grass area,” he said. “But we’ve also gotten into a program of getting more golf balls

recently and I’m sure it helps to be able to hit fresh golf balls and not old scuffed up ones.” The course has also worked on drainage and bought some new equipment to be able to do more things to and for the course. It’s just the beginning, though. They are still in the process of making other changes and improvements. “We’re spending more on fertilizer and things we can control,” said

Alamo Mayor Diana Martinez handed over the honor of lighting the park’s large Christmas tree to Angela Ortiz, PSJA Memorial High School’s 2021 homecoming queen.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES RAMBLINGS From pg. 1

They saw the need 35 years ago, and the Winter Texan Times quickly became a staple in the Winter Texan community across the Valley. My husband, the publisher and co-owner with me, is third generation in this business. The late June Brann was his grandmother, and Jim Brunson is his father. We bought the business just a couple of years ago when his dad retired. (The fourth generation is Anastasia Brunson, our oldest daughter, who works on the Parks Calendar, Classifieds, and all front office duties. It’s most likely her voice on the other end of the phone when you call.) I had always enjoyed writing, so I think it was natural that he and I would end up together with me working with them at the paper – finding my calling as I tell him. We were young when we got married and I had no idea what I wanted to do until working behind the scenes on the newspapers – for the Winter Texan Times, the Progress Times, and the Texas Agri-News (another paper that was being published at the time in 1994). I enjoyed the work and eventually, after earning my communications degree, started writing for the Progress Times. Now here we are ... I am editor and co-owner and get to have fun with y’all. Telling your stories. Delivering your news. It is a very rewarding experience. We have enjoyed getting to know you. We have enjoyed spending time with you in the parks. We have also enjoyed getting to know the Wintertainers™ that come to the Valley to entertain you. Brann brought a great product to you, and we hope we are continuing the tradition and giving you what you want. With that I wanted to share some of what was said about the purpose of the paper in its beginnings – and I want to invite you, our readers, to help us out in fulfilling that purpose. “For years we have want-

ed to publish a newspaper v dedicated to Winter Texans A – a newspaper for and about v Winter Texans with news s they can use, and news slant- a ed for their particular inter- v ests and lifestyle. a “We are inviting you to send us letters to the editors. w If you have a particular prob- T lem and can’t find the answer p or don’t know where to go, t we’ll try to help. This is your newspaper, and we want it to be what you want it to be. “We’re interested in your birthdays and anniversaries. We’re interested in your new grandchildren. We’re interested in special activities within the park. We’re interested in your shuffleboard, bridge, and other winners. “We’re particularly interested in people. If you’ve had an exciting life, an unusual career, an unusual hobby, we’d like for you to let us know. Have a favorite recipe or household hint you’d like to share? Send it to us. “Above all, we’d appreciate your suggestions as to what you would like in this newspaper.” Again, I invite you to share your news with us. Share the news you don’t mind sharing with others. We want to share what is important to you. We want to share what you want to read and see in a paper. You can send stories, letters, or ideas to news@wintertexantimes. com. If you are a park activity director, please send your list of open activities to parkscal@wintertexantimes.com. Any advertising questions, send to ads@wintertexantimes.com. If you want to see past issues, and the most recent issue, online, visit our website at www.wintertexantimes.com. We look forward to hearing from you! Carina A. Brunson

AARP recruiting volunteers for Tax-Aide service

25

AARP Foundation has kicked off volunteer recruitment for its TaxAide program, the nation’s largest volunteer-based tax preparation service. Volunteers may sign up to assist taxpayers either in person or virtually, with a number of roles available. In addition to tax preparers, whom the program will train, Tax-Aide needs people who can provide technical and communications assistance, interpreters, and

program leaders. Volunteers come from a variety of industries and range from retirees to university students. All levels and types of experience are welcome. Tax-Aide offers free in-person and online tax preparation and assistance nationwide to taxpayers with low to moderate income. Because of the complexity of the U.S. tax code, many taxpayers overpay their taxes or turn to paid tax services they cannot afford. Some

may forgo filing their taxes and miss out on the credits and deductions they’ve earned because they are unable to pay for assistance. Tax-Aide volunteers can help by providing necessary services in communities where there is the greatest need. The McAllen office is located in the Main Branch of the McAllen Public Library. Volunteers will start training on Monday, January 3, 2022.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has grown since its inaugural team of just four volunteers in 1968 and has served over 68 million taxpayers since its inception. The program has volunteers in every state who typically number more than 30,000. To learn about volunteer opportunities, visit aarpfoundation.org/ taxaide or call 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277).

ALAMO

lighted ornament where he met kids of all ages for picture taking time. Alamo Mayor Diana Martinez chose to let PSJA Memorial Homecoming queen, Angela Ortiz have the honor of throwing the switch to light the huge Christmas tree following a countdown. The Miss Alamo court members gathered around the tree during the ceremony and were joined by members of the City Commission.

The mayor and commissioners greeted the crowd gathered at the park stage and thanked those who had participated in the parade and wished the audience a Merry Christmas. They were followed by groups of Guerra Elementary students entertaining with songs and dance on stage, much to the enjoyment of the paradegoers, especially parents of the kids.

Santa Claus was popular with many kids and their parents who wanted a picture with the jolly old fellow inside a giant ornament.
