It has been a blessing and pleasure to see what the Winter Texan community does for the communities they live in. Each year, especially during the holiday, the communities you live in are blessed with your charity. It always amazes me at how you come together to serve one purpose and bring so many happy faces to the families that live around you. In this issue we have Tripp Wright and his group of elves that have

Local children treated to 1st annual Santa’s Posada

By Barb Zanetti Tripp Wright of Alamo Rec-Veh Park said he missed being Santa to over 2,000 children after Progeso’s Amigo group disbanded last year. So, he came up with a plan to entertain hundreds of children, but he knew he couldn’t do it alone. To help local needy children and their families enjoy the Christmas season, Tripp persuaded three groups to pool their resources and their volunteers. In less than a month they planned, collected con-

This year’s Posada effort was so successful, the organizers believe it will be the model for future celebrations. They say it’s a tribute to Santa Tripp’s persistence and will become his legacy. That comes with a promise that they will work each year to make it better. (Photo by Dennis Zanetti)

Partnering ministries geared to see joyful faces

By Herb Moering Three Christian ministries have partnered to bring holiday cheer to hundreds of children in Mexico through a backpack and shoebox project. A truckload of a couple thousand backpacks and shoe boxes each containing school supplies, articles of clothing, a game, hygiene items and a booklet arrived in San Juan Dec. 4. Most of the supplies will be distributed Dec. 28 in various Christmas celebrations at churches and orphanages in many Mexican communities, See JOYFUL pg. 7

tributions, and shopped for a Dec. 11 party, which they called “Santa’s Posada”. This event became a reality due to the efforts of the McAllen Elks Lodge #1402 (Exalted Ruler Milly Hernandez), McAllen Southern Justice Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club (Chapter Secretary Eli Garcia, road name Ghiandi) and Alamo Rec-Veh Park (Tripp, aka Santa). Even before he played Santa, Tripp maintained a firm belief that all children should enjoy the Christmas holiday. “Underprivileged kids should get the same joyous day as the privileged,” he said. “I say: ‘Make the celebration equal for all children – rich or poor’.” Because of the efforts of so many, the Saturday morning Christmas celebration for 200 children and their families became a reality. More than 60 volunteers were ready when McAllen’s Elks Lodge doors opened.

To do his part, the excited Santa actor donned his $500 Santa suit, added white bushy eyebrows, a full white beard, and a hat with a long white-haired wig (to cover his bald head), and then he let his playful side emerge. “I’m the person who can pull it off with the kids because I’m a big kid myself,” he said. “I play with the kids. With the one who cries. I play with the one who is happy, with the one kid who is not happy. I know how to treat them.” However, because of his terminal cancer diagnosis, Tripp isn’t always patient with those who didn’t immediately act on his plans to make Christmas special for as many children as he could. “Honestly, he was very pushy and ‘on me’ to make this event happen,” Milly said. After the event was over and the Lodge doors closed Saturday afternoon, she said she realized how much all of them had done in only

three weeks. “I am proud and excited about how successful Santa’s Posada was,” she said. “I love Tripp for allowing me to be part of his vision.” According to Tripp, Milly is the person to make Santa’s Posada an annual event. He says that’s because he and Milly are Tasmanian devils with their fast and furious party planning. “It’s bing, bing, bing,” he said. “Then everything goes off without a hitch.” Each organization had a role to play to help the community. days after Saturday’s party, Santa’s legs were black and blue from kids According to Eli, For running up and smashing into him and climbing onto his lap. It was difficult for the children not to smile. Along with having their photos taken with Santa, the kids were treated by Elk Lodge members to lunch, as well as encouraged to join in the Elks’ cookie decorating activity, to make tree ornaments, and to play a variety of oversized games. There was much at the party for everyone. Some of the families’ needs were met when they received bags of food, blankets, and clothing. For children, ARVP and Elks Lodge “elves” provided crayons, children’s books, candy, crocheted caps, hair scrunchies, pencils, coloring books, spiral notebooks, and … a toy for every child. The nativity scene is near completion. The Elon Musk-like “fantasy rocketship,” with detailed Russian scrawling is done. There are many more exquisitely detailed sculptures sprawled under the large tent at Sandcastle Village and Trail, located on West Ling Street in the entertainment district on South Padre Island. Better yet, as curator Lucinda Wierenga said, “it’s under the ferris wheel across from Louie’s Backyard.” There is no cost to check out the amazing craftsmanship of sculptors from around the world. There are donation boxes, though, and money collected helps pay those sculptors, like the Russian sculptor who showed up a couple weeks ago and designed the rocket ship. “I have a lot of good friends who are talented sand sculptors that I’ve met along the years doing this,” Wierenga said. “They like to come hang out, play in the sand and it works really well.” Wierenga is a third-generation Winter Texan from Michigan who started visiting the Valley when her grandparents were living in Pine to Palm Resort Park in Weslaco. There are about a dozen large sculptures under the tent, provided by Louie’s Backyard. The village opened two years ago and when visitors are

done making it through the tent, they can scan a QR code, and it will show a trail with about 25 sculptures scattered around town. “They’re all over so people can take their car or a golf cart or bike and follow the path,” Wierenga said. “We’re always looking for more places to put some.” The great thing about sand is that if any of the life-like works of art gets messed up, it can be torn down and then work can start over. “A bad storm came, and the rain came in sideways and took out two of the sculptures,” Wierenga said. The beauty of an art museum made out of sand, the sand isn’t going anywhere and there’s plenty of it. Without that tent, however, it would be hard to keep the sculptures. If one is looking for creative and unique vacation photo opportunities, just stroll through the village. People can even have their picture taken on (yes, on) a throne of sand. “We started adding little ones and we try not to take things out. We are constantly growing, changing, and very unique,” Wierenga said. The South Padre Island Sandcastle and Trail is open seven days a week, “usually by 10 a.m. until the ferris wheel closes at 10 or 11 p.m.,” Wierenga For more information, visit https:// www.sopadre.com/experiences/sandcastle-trail/ or the Sandcastle Village Facebook page.

Celebrating the holiday spirit at MOSTH

The Museum of South Texas History’s celebration of Fiesta de Nochebuena emerged as a point of inytersections on Dec. 12, 2021. History, wculture, religion, family, and commu-nity all intersected on this day at the museum. e The date for the event could not -have been more symbolic. On this every day in 1531 in colonial Mexico, tJuan Diego claimed to have seen the apparition of Virgin fthe sMary, so there’s dinteresting symmetry there. de n Fiesta fN o c h e b u e n a ecelebrated culfture through the eexpression and tconsumption of orich foods, such as tamales and daguas frescas, music as performed by ,Mariachi Oro of Edinburg North High eSchool, and a piñata was broken. It nwas endless fun. On a more reflective note, the museum featured a spotlight exhibit of d some 75 nativity scenes donated by e the late Bishop Emeritus of the Did ocese of Brownsville, the venerable eRaymundo Peña. , Bishop Peña was devoted to his nastivity scenes, and through the years -observers gifted the bishop with new nativity scenes that were added to his /collection. When Bishop Peña died in -September 2021, he left in his will the egift of 75 nativity scenes to the Museum of South Texas History.

When 88-year-old Daria Martínez Ramírez walked into the museum to celebrate Fiesta de Nochebuena with her daughter Alicia Cardoza, she was immediately drawn to the nativity scenes. And she had good reasons to do so. “I knew Bishop Peña since the 1970s,” she said. “I got to know him through the years, and I knew about these nativity scenes.” Though she misses Bishop Peña, Martínez Ramírez expressed her love for both the bishop and for the gift he left behind. The bishop’s motto was to “do everything with love.” On Dec. 12, Fiesta de Nochebuena was graced by the love of Dalia Martínez Ramírez, and by the gift of Bishop Raymundo Peña. May all love each other this holiday season. Happy Holidays from the Museum of South Texas History. Bishop Emeritus Raymundo Peña Nativity Scene Collection will be on exhibit until Jan. 9, 2022, which is included in the regular museum admission fee. MOSTH is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. However, it is closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Dawn Hardy is a self-described fierce competitor. Watching her play confirms that unless you’re watching the non-stop smile on her face when she’s playing. A former college athlete who has played volleyball, softball, and numerous other sports, it only took her a couple pickleball games back home in Topeka, Kansas to fire up those competitive engines. “I love it,” said Hardy during the weekly pickleball mixer at Casa Del Valle in Alamo. “I especially love the friendships.” The Casa Del Valle Pickleball Mixer is held every Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon. The weekly event is open to anyone wanting to come and play on the six courts available. There’s a $3 charge and a one-time waiver to be

signed. There are some paddles and balls available for use. “These are probably the best outdoor courts in the Valley,” said Dennis Leitner who, along with his wife Sheri, help organize and run the program, which had more than a dozen participants during a weekly event. “When I retired, I wanted something to stay active beside golf. I met a friend in my hometown who had put together our pickleball group and really enjoyed it. I played tennis before and this game is very adaptable, especially for seniors.” Pickleball has exploded in popularity, not just in the Rio Grande Valley or among Winter Texans, but across the country and throughout Canada. Time to Care and Share

Now is a time to care and to share our time and our talents. Last month my interest was really aroused when I was lucky enough to participate in a trade show where a representative from our Rio Grande Valley Food Bank had a booth directly across from mine. I had often wondered exactly how our RGV Food Bank operates and here was my chance to learn more. Have my eyes been opened? I learned a lot. Now it is time to share some of that information. There is not room to share all that I learned so I will just hit the high points. Our local Rio Grande Valley Food Bank was incorporated in

1986. Today it has grown to be the largest charity in South Texas. Our local food bank, with headquarters in Pharr, provides food to families in Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy counties. Since the pandemic, there has been a 7% annual increase in need. In 2019, a total of 40 million pounds of food and fresh produce was distributed to food insecure families in our three-county area. In 2020, over 60 million families in the US turned to Food Banks for help. And this is in a land of plenty. Can you imagine? In our Rio Grande Valley up to 146,000 families experience food insecurity. One family out of every four is in

The SIDING SOURCE

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

need. Those families are not just the elderly or veterans in need. Those families have kids who wake up daily not knowing if when they come home from school, if they will have a supper meal. How can they concentrate on learning when they are hungry? Those families need help. What impressed me the most was that through volunteer giving of time and generous donations as well as reduced prices on fresh produce provided by local farmers and packers, the RGV Food Bank is operating on two cents out of every one dollar donated. Ninety-eight cents is spent directly on food that goes to families in need. A donation of $5 will provide 25 meals. That is

amazing! How do they do that? Mainly the RGV Food Bank depends on volunteers who donate their time. Groups volunteer to help sort, store and pack the food and produce to be distributed to about 275 partner distribution points. The Food Bank needs more volunteers to keep their costs down. Vo l u n t e e r time is valuable and reduces overhead costs. Maybe we can’t afford to give dollars. But we can care, we can share by giving of our time. The RGV Food Bank is desperate for volunteers. To volunteer your time or to make a donation, call (956) 904-4535 and speak with Olivia Lucio. Yes, we care. And yes, we can share. Yes, we can make a difference.

It’s not just any omelet The great ones are known by just one name. There’s Tiger, Ali, Kobe, Brady and.... Dave? Well, it’s more like Omelet Dave after making more than 100,000 omelets during his first 13 years at the Victoria Palms restaurant in Donna. So, maybe WINTER TEXAN SPECIAL he doesn’t have the FREE FRIES worldwide appeal as 1/2 Basket Woods or Jordan, but he’s known among Winter Texans, and travelers who stop in for one of his fanWith Park Badge tastic creations - whether it’s an omelet or a tantalizing waffle masterpiece Weslaco Dave’s gift for gab is as great as his cooking. 1015 S. Inter. Blvd. • Weslaco, TX 78596 • 956-520-8783 There’s no charge for a good conversation with Mission Dave. In fact, it’s highly encouraged. This morning, I had an omelet with the works - ba- 409 N. Bryan RD. STE 104 • Mission, TX 78572 • 956-205-2940 con, ham, sausage, green peppers, jalapenos, onions and, of course, mushrooms – but no spinach (don’t want anyone to think I’m super healthy). As usual, FAMOUS FOR THE FUN it was a perfect way to start the morning. It came KNOWN FOR THE FOOD with hash browns, sourdough toast and salsa (and a cup of coffee). Not sure why, but I can make an omelet with the exact same ingredients, put a chef’s hat on - probably even Dave’s hat, and cook it all in the same spot Dave cooks it and it just won’t be as good. Why is that? Affordable I also had a round two. A waffle that doubled as Fresh Seafood, Sandwiches, Salads, dessert - that’s how I justify it. This tasty morsel was and much more! put in front of me to the chorus of angels. It had to be the fluffiest and tastiest waffle I’ve had in recent OPEN DAILY FOR LUNCH AND DINNER AT 11:00 AM Located at the Foot of the Causeway in Port Isabel’s Lighthouse District memory. The waffle was as smooth as the mound of 956-943-FOOD (3663) • www.PiratesLandingRestaurant.com strawberries and whipped cream on top. Chewing is just an option. It was a perfect complement to go with the workA Real Dining Over ing man’s omelet. Dave said he figured that he would be 84 years old the Water Experience about the time he reaches 200,000 omelets and said he would probably still be doing it if he is still able. Family-Oriented Atmosphere “I like it. It’s not hard and I can talk to people,” Full Service Bar he said. Live Entertainment That’s great news for Victoria Palms. It’s also terAvailable for Large Parties rific for all those who go by the RV Park, hotel, and or Private Events restaurant, which is open to the public. OPEN DAILY FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER AT 7:00 AM The food is definitely worth the trip. Being part of 1 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island (From Causeway Turn Right, Drive Through KOA) the great Omelet Dave experience is just an added 956-761-PIER (7437) • www.Pier19.us bonus - at no additional cost.

One of the children’s Christmas parties was held Dec. 18 just outside Puebla, Mexico at a church in the mountains. There were many happy faces both the children and the missionaries who brought the presents.

wonderful the event was… just like an Old-Time Christmas Party!” Colleen said. “They said it was well organized and went so very smoothly. “It was more than giving money for the volunteers, it was taking part [in the action] and seeing the joy, as well as sharing in the excitement of a children’s Christmas Party.” Others liked the feeling of having a single purpose. “That’s what it’s all about …,” Eli said, “being there for each other and the coming together.” Some of the children’s enthusiasm couldn’t be contained. Santa’s wife (Maggie Biedekapp) watched a five-year-old come through the door with his father. Then the child spotted Santa. “The little boy came running,” she said. “We heard the little guy cry, ‘Santa! Santa! Santa! Santa!’ “Then he barreled into Tripp!” she said. “The little fellow was hugging Santa and hugging him and hugging him. All the time his head was bur-

ied in that white beard.” Like the hundreds who would sit on Santa’s lap, the little boy heard the “Ho! Ho! Ho!” Before long Santa was challenging the five-yearold to match that famous Christmas greeting.

The boy gave it his best try – just as other children before him have done. Some a bit softly and tentatively. Some robustly. Almost all of Santa’s lap sitters, joining in the “ho, ho” merriment. Tripp said he can’t help but feel their joy. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” said the Jolly Old Gent.

toys and organizing the shopping was ARVP’s Colleen Benoit. She chose 10 park volunteers to help her spend over $3,000 in donations from the park’s church, ARVP RC Racers and individual residents. In less than an hour, each shopper had purchased up to 45 toys for their assigned age group and gender. “Christmas gift giving, and Santa is all about kids,” Colleen said. “I enjoy giving back to my winter community and doing something to help low-income parents get through the holiday season. I’m sure this is true for all of the volunteers here.” After the shopping was completed, Colleen organized a group of over 30 park volunteers to sort hundreds of toys into designated boxes for delivery to the Lodge. The park’s church and a Helping Hands group collected toys, too, so those were added to the containers. Everyone seemed happy with the event. “So many people told me how

Taking the Tabs to Texas

Collecting can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House has been ongoing at La Floresta Park in Mercedes for many years. This year, Rodger and Jean Vanderville from Manistique, Michigan, arrived at La Floresta Park with over 50 pounds of tabs collected from family and friends in their hometown. These were combined with some collected at La Floresta Park, and a total of about 68,740 individual tabs were taken to the Ronald McDonald House in Corpus Christi. The money from can tabs adds up and becomes a valuable donation to the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald Houses are located near children’s hospitals. Their mission is to provide a place for families to stay, who are far from home, so they can focus on the health of their child. They also assist families with travel and other expenses.

worked this year to bring joy to children in their community. He, and his elves, have great hope that this first event grows to something bigger each year. I look forward to seeing what it becomes. I love seeing how you love your community, no matter how long, or how little, you visit with us each year. It is a wonderful thing to see the hope, joy, laughter, and love that comes from the giving you do. It is a blessing for us to see what goes on in the communities around us, and the part you play in those communities. We invite you to keep sharing those moments with us by sharing your stories and pictures with us. ******** With Christmas this week – we wish you a very Merry Christmas! We hope you get to enjoy the holiday with some of those you love. We will have another fairly quiet one but look forward to getting together with friends and spending time with our family as we enjoy some tamales and whatever other goodies we

decide to have. We are hoping this cooler weather sticks around a little bit so we can also enjoy some hot chocolate. We have small traditions – tamales and hot chocolate – and watching a movie with family. Our celebrating of Christmas has become a bit smaller over the years, but it still reminds us of the reason for the season. ******** As said above – we love to share your stories. Send your great news to us. Send news about your park. Send us information about unique events. Let us know when you are celebrating something special. Tell us when someone is celebrating an important milestone or a big birthday. We want to share your news. We want to share the news you want to know. We can’t do that without you. You are an integral part in our paper, and we look forward to sharing what’s important to you. Send your items to news@wintertexantimes.com.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES PICKLEBALL From pg. 6

Fun had at Golf Cart Rodeo

On December 4, 2021, Mission Bell -Tradewinds RV Resort held their very first Golf Cart Rodeo. Several people from the park volunteered to be a team driving their golf carts through a pre-determined course on the parking lot. The part that made it so much fun was that the driver would be blindfolded, and the passenger would give the instructions on how to get through the course. Completion of the course was timed and those with the best times won prizes. Pylons were run over; judges were chased by the blind folded and a great time was had by all. They all agreed they'd like to do it again next year.

“pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities — are credited for creating the game. Pickleball has evolved from original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing internationally as well, with many European and Asian countries adding courts.” Leitner said pre-COVID, the event would attract as many as 40 players. With the six courts all playing doubles, 24 players is the max. But with constant rotations, everyone plays, and everyone gets a break. They also are planning to hold a round-robin tournament like they did the year prior to the pandemic.

“It’s just a great way for people who don’t have access or want to play in a different environment to come out and play and meet people,” he said. “They can also check out the park.” Hardy, who said that she has to tame her competitive nature, added that it helps that she has played tennis, ping pong and badminton. Pickleball has elements of all three sports, played on a badminton-size court and with a modified tennis net. “If you played any of those, it’s easy to pick up,” Hardy said. “I’ve taken lessons, watched Youtube videos and just love to play. “The key is to get to the line. A lot of people like to stay back and play or play one up and one back. You have to get to the net. I’ve played singles and doubles in tennis but doubles in pickleball is more fun. “And you meet so many wonderful people.”

Here’s How It Works

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Seeking help

There are some Winter Texans at Casa del Sol that need your help. They are collecting donations to help the people affected by the tornadoes in KY. They are seeking monetary donations, although items are welcome as well. They have a semi-trailer that is loading stuff in NE to take to KY with the donated items. There were communities that were completely destroyed - they need everything - said Lynn Clasen who is spearheading the effort. If they can get someone to donate a trailer down here to load and drive to NE, or to KY, they will let us know. If you want any more information, to learn how you can get involved, or to make donations, contact Lynn Clasen (952) 251-8480, lmclasen@ yahoo.com.

Luke 2 : 8-14 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
