Entertainers shine at Showcase

I know I have already said it, but I will say it again – it’s getting busy. It seems like everyday we hear of another event coming up. Things are finally picking up and we’re going to have a hard time getting out there to everything. We try to attend as much as we can, but we often miss something. This is why we invite you to send in stories and photos as often as possible. We publish what we See RAMBLINGS pg. 18

Last chance this year for a bullfight

It was as if you were in the biggest bullring in Spain the way Cayetano Delgado fought all four bulls at the January 16th event at the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria. Matador Ayala was held up on the highways in Mexico, so Cayetano had no choice but to face all four bulls by himself. In the event, he won eight ears and a tail. Fred Renk said it was as if you were seeing his son David Renk out there in the ring. David Renk was Cayetano’s Godfather and See BULLFIGHT pg. 7 INDEX

Mission Bell’s Hall was full of clapping, cheering, singing, and music throughout the day during this year’s Entertainers Showcases. The showcases highlight entertainment that’s available to Valley activity directors throughout the Valley. This is the opportunity for activity directors to book well known entertainment and listen to some new entertainment as well that provide music for shows, dances, happy hours, and line dancing. This year’s events saw some of the Valley’s favorites and had quite a few new groups and individuals too. All the entertainment received great feedback from the crowd. This is a show you will never see anywhere else. Some new ones to me were Nu Festus and Redneck Revival served as self appointed judges during Curt James’ showcase performance See SHOWCASE pg. 14

17th Bi-Annual Winter Texan Survey

Every two years the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and the Winter Texan Times partner to conduct the Winter Texan Survey. The survey serves as a census of the Winter Texan population and gathers data about the attitudes, behaviors and economic impact of Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. This week, the Winter Texan Times includes the Winter Texan Survey as an insert in the newspaper and we invite our readers to complete the survey, and in so doing, be entered in a drawing for one of

three $200 cash prizes. This very important research is used Valley-wide by both businesses and communities to help make very important decisions that impact the Winter Texan community. By completing and returning your survey before the deadline you will help ensure the Winter Texan Survey results reflect the most accurate picture of the Winter Texan population and the positive impact Winter Texans have on the Rio Grande Valley. The easiest way to complete the survey is online. See SURVEY pg. 28

Since 1998 the RGV Concert Band has been presenting six concerts each year to Valley residents from January through March. In addition, a Christmas Concert is given by “early arrivals” and a combined concert with vocal groups is given semi-annually in March. This season after a break due to “covid,” the band members joyously began practice in November 2021, and presented a Christmas Concert in December. The band is currently giving concerts in 55+ parks throughout the Valley. Made up mainly of Winter Texans, with lots of help from local younger residents, the band currently has about 45 members. ‘Valentines for Veterans’ Campaign begins

Today, the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) kicked off its monthlong campaign to send Valentines cards to the nearly 1,000 residents of its nine State Veterans Homes. The VLB urges Texans to take part in this mission to show these courageous men and women that they are an integral part of our communities. “We are humbled and privileged to provide care to so many of our nation’s heroes,” said VLB Chairman George P. Bush. Texans interested in participating can mail Valentines to any of the

nine State Veterans Homes. To ensure on time delivery, cards should be postmarked by no later than February 10th and should include “Valentines for Veterans” in the mailing address. Mailing addresses for the State Veterans Homes may be found at this website - https://vlb.texas.gov/ veterans-homes/locations/index. html. The local address is Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home, 301 East Yuma Ave., McAllen, Texas 78503.

Quinta Mazatlán presents Migrating and Resident Birds

Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host Santa Ana NWR Urban Park Ranger Thamara Hernandez on Thursday, January 27th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special presentation on the Rio Grande Valley’s winter migrant and resident birds on the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán. Why learn about migrating birds? In North America there are 338 bird species listed as Nearctic-Neotropical migrants. Of those 338 species, 333 of them have been documented in Texas. This means that of the 615 species of birds recorded in Texas (the highest record of any other state), about 54% of them are Nearctic-Neotropical migratory birds. The Rio Grande Valley is considered to be one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America. The LRGV has yearlong growing seasons and is located between four converging climates re-

sulting in more plant and wildlife diversity. During migration birds will follow specific routes also known as flyways. These routes run north to south and include the Atlantic oceanic route, the Atlantic Flyway, the Mississippi Flyway, the Central Flyway, the Pacific Flyway, and the Pacific oceanic route. The Central and Mississippi flyway merge in the LRGV making the Rio Grande Valley a safe haven for these migrating birds. Migratory birds provide numerous ecosystem services such as pest con-

trol, plant pollination, serve as food source for other wildlife, and attract millionsofbirdersandnatureenthusiasts from all over the world. Working for the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge right along the banks of the Rio Grande River,Urban Park Ranger Thamara Hernandez, has a very importantresponsibility to maintain the refuge for these magnificent migratory birds on their incredible journeys. A Rio Grande Valley native Thamara grew up in San Juan. Her passion for the envi-

ronment and conservation was instilled early on by her family who worked in agriculture fields. She learned firsthand all the hard work that goes into maintaining a healthy environment. Through her role as Urban Park Ranger, Thamara has played an active role in educating hercommunityontheimportanceof protecting and conserving the natural habitat of the Rio Grande Valley. Join Quinta Mazatlán for a special presentation of “Winter Migrating Birds” this Thursday January 27th at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person. Pre-purchased tickets recommended. Tickets available for purchase at www.quintamazatlan.ticketleap. com. Please follow current COVID-19 Safety Guidelines while in park. WINTER TEXAN TIMES SHOWCASE From pg. 1

Blu, Chris Moreau, Bruce Boudreau, In Six Days, Southern Vibes, The Real Beals, Night Howlers, Blue Wolf and Winnie Brave. The show on January 12 had some of your usuals like Redneck Revival, Spittin’ Image, Bill Chrastil, The Chamberlins, Naomi Bristow and more. I couldn’t believe the little bit of personal back story from Bristow that she is a certified denturist. I am glad she has chosen to share that voice and yodeling with us. Also performing that day were Lindley Creek, Diego and Edith, Jason Whorlow, Pickpocket Gene, and Ralph Kuster, among others. As usual, there was a good mix of country, rock and roll, bluegrass, magic, gospel, oldies, and of course some comedy thrown in here and there. We heard some like Bully Bully, Pretty Wo m a n , Ride Sally Ride, Jolene, H o w G r e a t Thou Art, Amarillo by Morning, and so much more. During a break in the first show, organizers presented Robert and Billie Ferguson with an appreciation trophy. The Fergusons won’t be returning next year, and therefore will not be doing the shows. The plaque expressed thanks for the work the Ferguson’s have done by bringing entertainment to the Valley for over ten years (these were the 32nd and 33rd shows). “We have had a ball and are so proud,” said Robert. “We’re going to miss you. You will continue doing what you do so well…. Keep partying.” During the second show, attendees were able to listen to the deep voice of Jamie Layton. Layton not only sings country, but he also sings

gospel with the Abundance Quartet that is currently doing some Valley shows. We were also able to listen to Justin Terry, Poison Ivey, Curt James, Festus, Jim Hanson, Elaine Nelson, and others. There were some sound issues at one point while Curt James was performing, and he rolled with it and still pleased the crowd with his voice and humor saying “the show must go on.” And it did. Winnie Brave, a new entertainer this year, shared their story on how they started coming to the Valley. The duo hails from Alberta, Canada. Amy said she used to come down here to visit her grandparents – her grandfather being a member of the Playboys, she had music in her veins. She and her husband eventually decided to carry on the tradition of Canadians playing country music, she said. They a l s o play a little bit of bluegrass. Their name comes from their first mode of travel – a 1976 Winnebago. Most of the entertainers are available from December through March, and there were a handful that are in the Valley year-round like In Six Days, Diego and Edith, Southern Vibes, Curt James, Elaine Nelson, Night Howlers, and a few others. The shows were a hit this year and it was a pleasure, as always, to get out there and enjoy the fun and energy of the entertainers and activity directors and managers. We hope you get to see some of these entertainers in your park soon.

Time to travel to King Ranch

It’s time to travel. Maybe you have been staying in and you are longing to get out and about. I can understand after voluntarily quarantining for the second time in less than a year... I am ready to get out of this house. Why not think about a tour? A multi-day? A one-day? One of the most popular tours that I offer is the one-day King Ranch Tour. And now there are two King Ranch Tours - the King Ranch Tour and the King Ranch Farm Tour. So, what’s the difference? The King Ranch Tour is our basic tour that includes a guide with you from pick up to drop off time. Once we arrive at the Ranch, a King Ranch Guide joins us. Generally, that guide is someone who grew up on the ranch and may be currently helping to work the cattle and care for the horses on the ranch. That guide now takes over and explains

the daily workings of the ranch as we drive the twelve-mile loop road through the ranch pasture. A mid-day Texas style barbeque is included at the Cesar Kleberg Camp house. This very simple frame structure was where the cowboys spent the last night before heading out on the trail with the cattle destined for Kansas and markets to the north. After lunch there will be an included visit to the Henrietta Memorial Museum located in what was originally an icehouse. Here trains loaded with fresh vegetables from the Rio Grande Valley made their first re-icing stop. In the museum, you will see the hunting car and the saddles and guns that were actually used on the ranch. Life sized photos depict life as it was on the ranch in the 1930’s. Last stop is downtown at the Running W Saddle Shop. For those ice cream

lovers, a trip to the nearby old-fashioned drugstore is a must. You are on your own for that treat - but the banana splits are to die for. Now take all of the above from the King Ranch Tour and add a drive through the farming area where three-mile-long furrows stretch almost as far as the eye can see. Follow this with a visit to the feed lot where cattle are prepared for market. This tour is now the King Ranch Farm Tour...you might call it two tours in one. Those passengers who go on this tour say it is the better of the two and is worth the extra money. Y o u can experience part of the regular King Ranch Tour if you go on your

own. The Visitor Center at the Ranch offers a tour that includes only the twelve-mile loop road. You will miss the Barbeque and the Memorial Museum and the visit downtown. You will learn more and see more on a tour offered by one of the local tour companies. However, if you decide to strike out on your own, be sure to call the ranch first and make an appointment. Have fun traveling. See you soon.

Frankie Flav’z: Wonderfully Unique

It did not take me long to realize I was sitting in a unique restaurant as I cruised into Frankie Flav’z Craft B u r g e r House in Harlingen. I walked in, was greeted, and sat down and began looking over the menu. There I found burger choices named “El Guapo,” “Trump’s Burger Wall,” “The Cut Throat Burger,” “The DoNutt” and more. My fondness of this establishment was growing as fast as my appetite. Frankie Flav’z has burgers that utilize items such as bananas, caramelized granny apples, peanut butter, corn and for the Triple B Burger, bacon, blueberry and brie, among other tantalizing ingredients and magnificent mixtures. Of course, there are plenty of the more common toppings from a variety of cheese to grilled onions, jalapenos, mushrooms, and a list that seemingly never ended. Most of the burger options can be made into hot dogs as well and the menu has a smattering of chicken sandwiches, salads, and street tacos. My server Trinity recommended the “Trash Can Burger,” so I went with that. After all, at the time of my visit, the deadline for this story was vastly approaching and the longer I perused the menu, the more I could not decide. The stranger the burger, the more it piqued my interest. Trinity said that burger was her favorite and it did not take long for me to figure out why. First of all, it’s a large burger, stacked high with the crowning achievement being two deliciously deep-fried onion rings with a dash of sweet barbeque sauce. This did cause me somewhat of a dilemma – do I leave the rings atop the burger or eat them individually. I compromised, leaving one at the top of the burger tower and enjoying the other one. Topped with a healthy portion of chopped brisket along with bacon, tomatoes, American cheese, a spring mix, and grilled onions (something I add to every burger I eat), the flavors were a fabulous array of fun. This was a meat lover’s dream – bacon, burger, and brisket, how can it go wrong. All that was missing was a nice nap.

can in the paper, and we always use our website and Facebook to get the news out. This cooler weather hasn’t made things not too pleasant outside, but it has been a nice change from the warm weather we had in December that was so not Christmas-like. Some days are pretty good though, and then others, like some recent days, are just too wet. I can stand the cold, for the most part, I just don’t like it as much when it is grouped with wind and wetness. The weather has not stopped people from holding events though. Although, some have moved indoors, we are seeing parks continuing with their activities and hearing they have had full crowds. It’s nice to see that everyone is getting to have some fun finally. I know everyone is still being careful, and we can’t always see your faces, but we can still see your smiles in your eyes. February and March are full of fun activities, so watch our paper about

those events like Charro Days, the livestock show, expos, and more. The Kite Festival, that will be held next weekend, was featured last week, and as far as I can tell, the weather shouldn’t be too bad at all to see some beautiful kites flying up high. If you can’t attend any events, just get outdoors when you can. Birding, and sightings, are picking up throughout the Valley. There are so many parks to visit too – whether you want to visit a birding center, a nature trail, or go see some alligators and tortoises. Have some fun out there – and share what you are doing with us. We love to see photos and hear about the good times you are having. If you have an idea, or have something excited happening near you, let us know. You can send your photos and stories to news@wintertexantimes. com. ~ Rina

Here’s How It Works

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
