Nature series presents Native Plants
Looking to diversify your garden with beautiful blooms? Whether you are a master gardener or just starting out, native plant expert Mike Heep can help transform your space with local specialties. Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host Mike Heep on the Nature Speaker Series on Thursday, February 3rd Mike Heep from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special presentation on “Landscaping with Native Plants” followed by a plant sale. The presentation will focus on a wide variety of the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants and information
on how native plants help sustain the ecological and biodiversity of the region. A native plant is one that has developed over a period of time (hundreds or thousands of years) in a particular region or ecosystem. Native plants have the potential to offer numerous ecological services that benefit humans, animals, and the landscape itself. Native plants attract a diversity of wildlife, support a healthy and more sustainable ecosystem, require less water, reduce strain on local water supply, add aesthetic beauty, and give a sense of place to a region.

Blessed with a rich and diverse river eco-system with its location nestled along the Rio Grande, Laredo, is home to hundreds of species of both local and migratory birds and is considered part of the “birdiest” corridors in North America. Laredo offers birders unprecedented access to view many rare avian beauties and is described by birding enthusiasts as the only place in the U.S. to have boasted four different species of Kingfisher: Ringed, Belted, Green and Amazon. Prized birds also include the Morelet’s See-

The event, being held February 2-5, is perfect for fans of our flying feathered friends, the Laredo Birding Festival is a three-day event that offers birders a variety of full-day scenic trips to take part in. Planned by The Rio Grande International Study Center and escorted by professional field guides and members of the local Mon-

Carefully selected public green s p a c es and private ranchland will provide visitors the chance to visit sites that have never been birded before, while an afternoon trip to St. Peter’s Plaza is where birders will have the chance to catch Laredo’ local green parakeets in action. Four Seasons RV Park’s Veterans in the spotlight
RV Parks and resorts offer many amenities and activities – even racing wooden turtles on a string can be a huge hit, like at Four Seasons RV Park in Brownsville. But each and every park’s identity comes heavily from the people who live there. Four seasons has a wide range of personalities – including the dozens who not just compete, but also watch, those turtle races and all the other activities. The park also is honored to be home to military veterans such as Bob Hughes, Noel Tow and Zane Dawson. Below is a snapshot of who these people are. Bob Hughes Bob Hughes was born in Colorado, but his family moved to Oklahoma before he learned how to hit the ski slopes. Now he’s lived in Texas longer than he did in Oklahoma. But when the Red River Rivalry game takes place between Texas
and Oklahoma on the football field every year, he’s still rooting for those Sooners. Hughes was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1952. He went to boot camp in San Diego before being sent to radio school for six months – not the disc jockey version of radio school, but to learn Morse Code. “It was a 16-week training course,” said Hughes, who has lived at Four Seasons since 1994, now as a permanent resident. “They taught me basic electronics and a lot of dots and dashes.” After learning code, Hughes was sent to Quantico, VA, at the Marine Air Station and then spent 11 months in Japan. After that, he went back into the private sector. “I worked for a while in a lumber yard and then worked as a roughneck on a drilling rig – doing just about anything,” he said. “I did it all but when you have to raise the drill bit and replace it, that’s the

working part there.” Hughes said he used to spend a lot of time at Four Seasons playing pool and competing in tournaments, until he wasn’t able to anymore. Still, he “especially loves the weather” and, if you see him out to eat, he’ll be the one with the Mexican plate in front of him. “A little bit of everything,” he said. “It’s good.” Noel Tow Noel Tow was born in Kentucky, moved with his family to Indiana and, after the military he eventually found his way to Michigan. There, he settled down, drove trucks, and raised a family along with his wife Scarlett. They started coming to the Valley in the winters in 2005. Noel entered the First Marine Division of the military in 1943. He was 17 years old, his dad left home and he had quit school to go to work. “But the military sounded like it would pay me more money than I was making at 30 cents an hour,” he said. He spent two-and-a-half years in the military, driving trucks part time and “digging fox holes,” where he

said the biggest thing was to hide. “We would dig really deep,” he said. Sometimes “we’d have caves, so we didn’t have to dig.” He left the military and d r o v e trucks and “worked at retiring.” He drove for a meat packer for 17 years and then for Van Camps for another 17 years, driving to all 48 states, oftentimes with Scarlett by his side. The couple had three boys and three girls, then adopted one boy and one girl, raising eight children. Noel joked that he thought at times that maybe he should have stayed in the military. “With a bunch of kids, I thought maybe I should have waited and retired from the military,” he joked. “But it was a bunch of very good memories.” A huge NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt, Tow said he liked the way “The Intimidator” would go about doing his work on the track. It’s similar to what he was taught in the military. “The military teaches you how to work with people and how to take orders,” he said. “Somebody tells you to do something, you do it and you don’t say anything. My boss once said that one of the trucks were turned over and he needed some help. I asked him if he was paying me like always and he said yeah. “I said, ‘I’ll do whatever as long as you’re paying me’.”
WINTER TEXAN TIMES Zane Cody Dawson Zane Cody Dawson was happy to join the Navy in 1944. He had his time in Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii, Alaska and Japan. The ships he was on were cargo ships including the Mulifun AKA 12, the Libra Akaio and the Destroyer Jenkins DD 477. His travels took him to Japan and Korea in the Atlantic and even Padre Island. The Sailors were allowed off the ship Jenkins for fun in Brownsville. He enjoyed the de-

skunks, skin them, and ride his bike 12 miles to Billings to sell the hides for 25 cents apiece. Zane married at the age of 21 and he and his wife had three boys and continued living in Laurel. When he was out of the military, at age 24 he stared working for the railroad. He also grew and took care of his large garden and sold flowers. He took up golfing for 45 years and has spent a lot of time fishing. He has been a resident of Four Seasons since 2007.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES
We are rich in history. We enjoy a multicultural heritage that influences our food, our music, and our customs. They say that time flies. It will probably be the second day of February - or perhaps even later - when you read this. Already a whole month has flown by. January is gone and February is here. And yes, time did just fly by. Spring is just around the corner. Spring is one of my most favorite times of the year. Spring is like a new beginning. The mesquite trees come into full leaf with their soft, buttery yellow blossoms and light emerald green leaves. Wildflowers will soon be bursting into bloom with bright spots of yellow, red, purple, and even blue splashes of color. Farmers will watch for just the right time to plant the vegetables, grain, and cotton. Now is the right time to think about a Sunday afternoon drive down Highway 281 affectionately known as the Military Highway and at one time the only road running
East and West and parallel to the Rio Grande River. Oh, if that road could talk. Just imagine how the Oblate Fathers pushed and pulled their pump organ as they moved from ranch to ranch administering Biblical teachings to the settlers. In the mid 1700’s the highway was just a dusty, sandy road that became a wet, muddy road after every rain...a road just waiting for another hapless victim to get stuck. In the 1800’s Zachary Taylor moved his troops up this same road and even established temporary headquarters at a ranch near Santa Maria. Today you will drive on a paved road through fields of sugar cane, onions and other vegetable crops that grow profusely in the rich alluvial soil left by the years of flooding from the Rio Grande River. Why not take a Farm Tour and learn more about the area?

This very important research is used Valley-wide by both businesses and communities to help make very important decisions that impact the Winter Texan community. By completing and returning your survey before the deadline you will help ensure the Winter Texan Survey results reflect the most accurate picture of the Winter Texan population and the positive impact Winter Texans have on the Rio Grande Valley. “All information provided will be kept confidential. The data will be
tabulated, and only statistical information will be made public in the final report,” said Dan Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times. The easiest way to complete the survey is online. Winter Texan Times has created an easy-to-use web form and there is a link to it on the home page of our website at www.WinterTexanTimes.com. Pirate’s Landing brightened my day
It was an overcast day as I sat inside P i r a t e ’s Landing, looking over a varied menu that appeals to adults and children alike. But, hey, I was in Port Isabel, by South Padre Island, so who’s complaining? The temperature outside was about 72, the music was at a perfect volume, so people didn’t have to scream over it and, after a couple weeks of cold, windy, gloomy weather it was a nice change of pace – and that was even before I ate, which tells me it’s gonna be a good day. I ordered the seafood stuffed mushrooms, covered in Alfredo sauce and some parmesan cheese. I forgot from my last trip here not just how tasty this appetizer is, but how filling it is. I topped it off with some Pirates Landing hot sauce and was on my way to a day of deliciousness. I ordered the ranchero shrimp. It felt a little strange that they came with rice, charro beans and tortillas but, hey, we are on the U.S./Mexico border so why not? I could smell the plate before it arrived as my server walked toward my booth. When he placed it in front of me, a smile came across my face seeing how many ready-for-me only shrimp were laying around with the red ranchero sauce and onions and peppers mixed within. As a special bonus, two fresh rings of raw onion lay on top. One way to get to my heart is with onions, grilled or raw, so these two slices were an unexpected bonus. The food came out quickly and at perfect temperature. The shrimp danced their way from my mouth to my stomach like a carnival ride and the extra side of coleslaw just made it a well-rounded and terrific experience, as always, at Pirate’s Landing. It may have been overcast when I walked in, but it was a sunny day for me anyway. Pirate’s Landing is located at the foot of the causeway in Port Isabel’s Lighthouse District. They are open daily for lunch and dinner at 11 a.m. You can check out their menu online at www. PiratesLandingRestaurant.com.

en every half hour. On Monday, the event will begin with an opening ceremony with bagpipe introduction, presentation of the flags, the National Anthem, prayer and a welcome by the hostess, Leslie Blasing. Lunch will feature songs by Geoff Clifton. Music from the era will be provided by Rock Island and others. There will be some special speakers that have connections to Vietnam. Blasing said the speakers are incredible and have some great things to share. A special presentation will be given by Doug Young featuring photos he has taken of Vietnam and his stories of spending time in the area. He will also have books available for sale. Donna Rowe, who was a head nurse in Saigon, will give an oral history of Vietnam. Another speaker is a representative from Custom Canines, an organization that Blasing supports yearround. The organization trains dogs for Veterans that need help with day-
to-day activities around their home and in public. She added that some of these dogs have to be trained for a lengthy time depending on how much assistance a Veteran needs. “I really want all these people to come together with a common thread,” said Blasing. “That is important to me.” She will be closing out the show on Tuesday with a special tribute to veterans featuring music from the era, country to rock. She said there will be room to dance. Courtesy golf cart rides from the parking lot will be available. Blasing said she is really excited about the event and hopes visitors can make it a two day stay of the event, or make it a mini-vacay. She said to make sure to take advantage of the partnering hotels for some cheap, discounted rates. The hotels have rooms blocked off for those that would like to stay the night and enjoy both days of the event. Here’s How It Works
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
