Ladies get outdoors with Friday Bucket List excursions

Good friends Taunnie Russell, Ruth Sagehorn, and Dorothy Jensen have become what I have dubbed the Friday Bucket List Ladies. These ladies are not only friends during their time at Winter Haven Park in Pharr, but they also get together during the summer. I recently met with the ladies, and they couldn’t stop laughing and smiling as they shared all the fun they had trying to stay active during lockdown. Last year, when people still weren’t sure about getting out and about, this group of ambitious ladies decided they needed to ‘make

in Alamo watched, like the 100 or more of those in attendance, in reverence and honor as veterans took turns carrying a U.S. flag to its retirement. They went, one by one, placed the flag onto the fire created earlier and stoked with each additional flag, saluted it and returned to retire another. They did this, over and over. Close to 500 times they brought flags that were in “such condition that (they) were no longer a fitting emblem for display,” and destroyed them in what the U.S. Flag Code calls a dignified way. When it looked as if they were running low on flags, another volunteer would bring out a box full of those waiting for their proper disposal. The flag retirement ceremony had been postponed a year earlier due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the number of flags waiting to be properly disposed were much larger than normal. “It was awesome,” Merriman said. “It was so respectful, so solemn. And to watch the veterans salute the flag each time they put a flag on the fire, it was something very special to be a part of.” The audience looked on, many in their golf carts and some wearing the U.S. colors as tribute. One group

played the national anthem before two others performed taps. As the day wore on, the clouds began to dissipate, and streaks of sunlight burst through the clouds as if almost in sync with the activities on the conference grounds. D r . Elwood Chipchase is the Bibleville C o n ference Grounds chaplain and president of Encouragement Ministries. Earlier he was one of the taps trumpet players and looked on as the fire raged and the thick, black smoke billowed as the flag pile grew. “They catch and burn really fast,” he said while sitting in his golf cart with his wife. “This is a special ceremony. It’s also needed as a reminder of what the flag means to us and to remember the sacrifices our veterans give. Some gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We can never forget that.”

met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s 161st year admission to the Union, January 29, 1861. It was so great for we Kansans to be together again, and the old-timers enjoyed meeting the thirty-three Kansans attending for the first time…. yay!!! As before, Trophy Gardens RV Resort is a great venue for this size of crowd. Ballis Catering of Mission served a delicious sit-down, plated meal at noon. Comments on the food and

service were ultra-complimentary. Rusty Rierson, home grown entertainer from Augusta, KS provided the entertainment. Rusty delighted the Kansas crowd with jokes, songs he composed and many all-time favorites. Jan Bergman, Chair of the event and Larry Schmitt, Communications and Reservations, facilitated the day’s events. No event of this size can occur without impressive Volunteers. Jan and Larry give thanks to the following that were involved in either the setup/tear-down of tables and chairs, registration, collecting monies, and/or distributing of the raffle prizes: Randy LeMasters, Benny Robbins, and Hank Waggoner, Chanute; Pat and Richard Carey, Ottawa; Ivalee Vanderhoff, Halstead; Bill and Mary Ann NieSee KANSAS pg. 16

us. We went ahead and figured if we weren’t supposed to be there, someone would tell us to leave.” But the story gets better…. They came to an area where other cars were parked and managed to park behind a Tesla. Ruth was admiring the car and voiced that she wanted a pictured of her by the car. This is when a gentleman stepped out of the car, and one of the other ladies went up to him and said, “My friend Ruth wants a picture with your car.” The ladies said they asked tons of questions about the car, when the man finally asked, “do you want to go for a ride.” “Of course,” they said. All this time, their husbands are standing by their car, clueless to the conversation, when they say, “We’ll be back.” During the drive, one of the ladies pipes up, “You know, since we’re going for a ride with you, we should probably know your name.” “He was so nice,” said Dorothy. “It was his birthday. We found out about his wife, daughter, where he was from. We aren’t shy.” Ruth said, he was very knowl-

edgeable about SpaceX and the facilities, which was very helpful to them. The ladies laughed about the encounter talking about all the gadgets in the car, how fast it went and that the man eventually brought them back to their husbands saying, “Sorry, I had to bring them back.” The man was nice enough to take their husbands on a drive as well and spent some time with them on the beach. Quinta Mazatlan was somewhere they said they always enjoy. “We were there for at least two hours,” they said. “Then we had to go eat again.” The salt flats were also fun, but one made the mistake of wearing white pants. It had been raining recently, so they didn’t get to see any of the gathering salt, and the soil was slick. “We might just have to go back.” Their trips didn’t go unnoticed. Everyone at the park would ask them where they went. The ladies said they learned they were the scouts, finding places for others to visit.

Tim Hadler, a native of Washington State, grew up on a farm with a love of music. He often jokes that his first audience were the cows he milked. Hadler moved to Nashville shortly after graduating to pursue a career in music. Listening to his music, his voice is reminiscent of the old-time country legends and is only part of the reason why he does a tribute show to Williams. In a news article, Tim said, “It’s America’s music. I love it.” He added that his tribute to Williams has been a ‘learning experience and a good time.’ While he covers Hank Williams, he also writes his own music. His music really touches the soul with real life behind the words. His song “Scream” is very moving. He co-wrote the song with a 91-year-old Navy veteran. The veteran, Leon Faddis, served in WWII on the USS Alaska. The song shows the emotion of the man’s struggles and nightmares related to his combat experience. He said, putting his story to song helped him overcome that trauma he experienced so many years ago. One reviewer of his show says, “His tribute to God, family, military service and Hank were inspiring and most appreciated.” He has had several singles on the top 100 on the Music Row Chart. His album, “Glad You Made It,” reached #70 in Billboard Magazine’s Heartseeker’s chart. He has performed on the Grand Ole Opry, the Crook and Chase Show, and RFD TV’s Midwest Country. He has also received the Best Tribute Artist Award for Branson. A patriot at heart, Hadler has a project that is very near and dear to his heart – Gumi Camp USA.

He never sings a show without mentioning the camp and inviting people to visit. The camp is a healing place for American vets. The 258acre property sits in southeast Taney County, Missouri. Veterans that need healing and support may reside at the camp without cost to them and grow at their own pace. Programs offered include peerto-peer support groups, veteran outdoor expeditions, experiencing life on a working farm/ranch, animal therapy, and storytelling. To learn more about the camp, visit www.gumicampusa.com. Hadler will be performing at Louie’s Backyard on Thursday, February 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is a Gumi Camp USA Benefit event. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 in advance. A love offering will be available for giving to homeless and jobless veterans. A live auction and 50/50 drawing will also be held. Playing with Tim will be Texas County Revue starring Vance Monday on steel guitar, Rick Weaver on drums, Ron Ford on bass, and Dave Perryman on rhythm guitar and vocals. You can also catch Hadler at Tip O Texas in Pharr on February 10, at 7 p.m., $7; and East Gate RV Park in Harlingen, February 11, 7 p.m., $8.

Quilts of love

It’s February... this is the month to give a special valentine to that special someone. It’s time to say, “I love you.” At least once a week, ladies and even a few men - are meeting together to say, “I love you” and they are saying this to people they may never meet - to people who are in nursing homes, to veterans who fought for our country and to grandchildren and great grandchildren who will have a keepsake to always cherish. And just how are these quilters doing that? They do that as they quilt lap throws and full-size quilts that will keep some one warm and comfy when they snuggle down in a lovingly made love offering. It’s a wonderful thing when one human being can say to an unknown other “I love you” for making my life and my world richer and for protect-

ing me and my loved ones. And that is what so many of our locals and our Winter Texans are doing as they meet together to quilt. All up and down the Rio Grande Valley, quilters join together for a good time of cheer - and maybe just a little gossip - as they turn out beautiful master pieces. Some of these artisans will even enter their quilts in local shows and compete for prizes. The art of quilting is centuries old. For some reason February seems to be the month to display this art in the Rio Grande Valley. During this month there are local quilt shows in many of our RV/MH parks. The biggest of them all is on February 18 and February 19 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Try to attend at least one of these shows and oh and ah over the beautiful artwork. In the early 1900’s quilting was

often a community effort just as it is in many places today. At that time a centralized home was selected as a meeting place. The quilt frames were attached to the ceiling and could be raised and lowered to a convenient level for quilting. Some six to eight women would spend the day with needle and thread as they vied to see who could make the smallest and most uniform stitches. Frankly, those ladies were probably enjoying the gossip and togetherness as much as they enjoyed the quilting.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Today so many ladies quilt alone using a round wooden frame to hold the quilt top tight as they stitch away. Sometimes the quilting is even done by machine. Doesn’t sound like near as much fun as having a whole group work together. Now, I ask you - What could be better than giving a quilt or a lap throw during the month of February. It’s a wonderful way to say “Thanks, I love you.” Such a gift just might be the best valentine of all.

We invite our readers to complete the survey, and in so doing, be entered in a drawing for one of three $200 cash prizes. The survey is available online on our website. This very important research is used Valley-wide by both businesses and communities to help make very important decisions that impact the Winter Texan community. By completing and returning your survey before the deadline you will help ensure the Winter Texan Survey results

reflect the most accurate picture of the Winter Texan population and the positive impact Winter Texans have on the Rio Grande Valley. The easiest way to complete the survey is online. They had six excursions last year and hope to add some new places this year. “We have a lot of fun,” said Taunnie. “We have fun in the Valley.” “The people are really interesting,” said Ruth. “We are more alike than they are different. We like people.” “Do we have a lot of fun when we go someplace,” said Dorothy. “Of course, we do. It’s on our bucket list, but there’s so much more, and we have a lot of stories that go with each one.” “And there’s one I am not telling.” There are several places they want to revisit, and new places they have added to this year’s list. The house that shared a name with Ruth – she said they are going back this year to investigate that history. Things they said they should have done differently

– more water and should have had in stock hand sanitizer. They left their stories behind saying they had to give credit to their husbands, Bill Russell, Russ Jensen, and Elliott Sagehorn. “They tagged along and put up with us the entire time.” “I am sure they wonder sometimes, but they had fun too.” They also ended their conversation with a look at how the weather was back home – “12 degrees, -9 windchill,” said one of them. “I’d rather be here.”

Here’s How It Works

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
