Crouch said there will be eight or nine vendors there with over 100 RVs for Winter Texans to see, but in addition there will be a lot more equipment of interest to the general public. Among other show additions, bunkhouse trailers have been added to the displays of travel See RV SHOW pg. 50

Betty Rydell is born entertainer

Some people are born to entertain and Betty Rydell is one of them. She never wanted to be anything else. Back home on her family’s dairy farm in Alexandria, Minn., she staged “oprys” in the backyard. By age 8 she had learned to yodel. She made her first appearance on radio at age 11 on Alexandria’s radio station KXRA playing her guitar ands singing, “I Love You Because.” Although she has played several venues, she prefers to play before a live audience. She is a multi-talented musician who plays several instruments in addition to guitar, including fiddle, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, melodica, and keyboard. She can perform yodeling songs, and sings the songs of artists such as Nancy Sinatra, Connie Francis, and a host other artists. Betty also enjoys doing skits to act out the words of songs. She has been doing the Red Dress skit to “She’s Got You” for several years. She is now doing “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” a spoof on getting old. And she and Ed did “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” back home in Minnesota where it got great reviews. Betty has performed with Barbara Mandrell, Charlie Pride, Conway Twitty, Ernest Tubb, Tex Ritter, Carl Perkins, Marvin Rainwater and LeRoy Van Dyke and many other notable country stars during her career. An award-winning artist, Rydell has won the coveted Entertainer of The Year Award presented by the Country Entertainers Association of the Upper Midwest, and has been inducted into the Minnesota Rock and Country Hall of Fame. Readers named Betty Rydell Best Female Entertainer of the Year in a survey by the Winter Texan Times, in both 2011 and 2012. In 2012, Rydell was inducted into F.A.M.E. (Families Advocating Moral Entertainment) while in the Rio Grande Valley, and in September that year Betty was inducted into the National Traditional Country Music Association’s “American Old Time Music Hall of Fame” in La Mars, Iowa. Recently, Betty and husband, Ed “Rydell” Bearse, recorded a CD called “We Could,” based on an old Jimmy Dickens’ Song. He sang lead on all but two songs where Betty was lead singer. Betty and granddaughter, Randi Rae, sang harmony to Ed’s songs. To their surprise, the National Traditional Country Music Association named it “Country Duet of the Year” in August of 2014. Betty and Ed are thrilled with the honor. Randi Rae has her own rock band, so they do not know if she is bragging about singing with her grandparents on their album that won country duet of the year. They are afraid it might not fit the image she is trying to create. “We are in the process of creating

more and more tributes because they are so popular in the Valley,” said Ed. “Audiences in the Valley seem to really enjoy the tributes that honor the performers they loved in prior years. Ed and Betty are now doing tributes to the Everly Brothers and Betty is doing one for Ray Price. They are also working on the Beatles. “It’s a little scary to do the Everly Brothers,” states Ed. “When we look out into the audience everyone is singing along with us so they will know if we miss a word. Look for Betty and Ed Rydell Jan. 15 at VIP La Feria; Jan 18, Sunshine RV, Harlingen 6:30 p.m.; Jan. 19, J-Five MH & RV Park, Mission; Jan 21, Country Palms RV Park, San Juan; and Jan. 25, Weslaco Trailer Park. All shows are at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Elvis Festival Rescheduled

The Elvis Festival, originally scheduled for Jan. 10 at Little Graceland in Los Fresnos, has been rescheduled for Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Elvis Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Admission is $8. For additional information call (956) 233-5482.

Professional Bull Riding coming to Livestock Show arena

Get ready, bull Riding fans, as the “The Hottest Eight Seconds of 2015” comes back to Mercedes. It’s bigger and better than ever, say the show promoters. The National Professional Bull Riders are bringing some of the nation’s top bull riders to town for a two-day event on Jan. 2425 at the RGV Livestock Show Arena in Mercedes. Approximately 35 top cowboys will compete for an average of $14,000 in money and prizes. This includes a chance to win one of three $600 Monsoon-Frontier Champion Trophy Buckles and a sack full of money. The National Professional Bull Riders (NPBR) not only attracts bull riders from Texas and the surrounding states but also from Mexico, Brazil and Australia. The four-footed beasts that cowboys will be trying to score points on will be top bucking bulls that are the up and coming stars of professional bull riding. Many of the bulls that have performed in the Mercedes NPBR in the past have been featured bucking bulls on television. The South Texas Bull Fight Challenge will be back this year. This will be the first stop on the South Texas Bull Fight Challenge Tour. Five top bull fighters will be competing against each other not only for money in their pockets but also for a chance to compete in the finals to be held in October. Protection and Freestyle

Photo Courtesy of Kierce Photography bullfighting competition is making bull riding even more exciting for the fans and athletes alike. Bullfighters have no ropes, spurs or devices of any kind in which to battle the bull. They are armed with an inner courage. The bullfighter relies on his athletic abilities, precision timing and the ability to think and make decisions in

milliseconds. In a freestyle bullfight, the bullfighter goes one-on-one against a bull for 70 seconds. He is judged on his willingness to expose himself to risk and on his aggressiveness. Several World Champion Bullfighters are gearing up for this challenge. One of the competitors will be Cody Emerson, 25, from Jonesboro,

Arkansas. He was the 2012 World Champion Freestyle Bullfighter and also won the 2012 Benny Binion WNFR Bucking Stock Sales bull fighting competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has been fighting bulls since he was 18 years old. Pro Rodeo Clown and Barrelman, Rockin’ Robbie Hodges of Cave Spring, Georgia will be showing off his comedy routine from inside the “clown barrel” at each performance. Robbie has established himself as one of the hottest barrelmen and funny guy personalities in the world of Professional Rodeo in only five short years. He was selected as barrelman for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in 2010. His quick wit and off the cuff banter, as well as carefully thought out acts, keep the crowds entertained for the entire performance. Robbie always promotes positive, non-violent, clean family humor, and has an uncanny knack for instantly bonding with audiences of all ages. He has performed at some of the largest PRCA Rodeos in the nation and has been nominated several times for “Coors Man in the Can” 2009-2012. The NPBR is one of the premier bull riding tours in the country and has been entertaining crowds since it was established in 2000. There will be something for everyone See BULL RIDING pg. 48

Bernie & Red celebrate 50th anniversary tour Popular husband and wife comedy/music team Bernie & Red will be kicking off their 50th Anniversary Tour here in the Valley. Back in 1965, in Liverpool the couple tied the knot, and 50 years later they are still making music together. The Liverpool in question is the city from which The Beatles hailed. Both Bernie & Red were born and raised in this seaport in the northwest of England. It was where they met as teenagers and subsequently married. So how did this dynamic entertainment duo get from Liverpool to the Rio Grande Valley? It’s a long story but here is the concise version. After marriage they settled in Liverpool where Bernie worked as a salesman and Red was a stayat-home mother of two, but there was something missing. They were looking for adventure, a rural lifestyle, fresh air and open spaces. So they moved to Canada, to get “back to the land.” It wasn’t until they moved to Canada that they began to take music and entertaining seriously. Prior to that it was just a few songs sung by Red to Bernie’s guitar accompaniment at family gatherings. They soon found that the Canada of the 1970’s was fertile ground for their unusual mixture of music and comedy. To start with, entertainment gigs had to fit in with Bernie’s cow milking schedule. Yes, they had managed to get “back to the land” but before long, Bernie quit milking cows. They began performing full time and were soon travelling worldwide, via their cruise ship performances. Eventually their travels brought them to Texas where they were, (in their own words) “Gob Smacked” at what they saw. “We were so impressed by the winter resorts,

friendly people and vibrant entertainment scene here in the Valley, that we decided, “Enough of cruising, let’s spend our winters in Texas and Arizona.” That is just what they’ve been doing for the past 15 years. During that time they have established themselves as favorite entertainers among the Winter Texans. For the past three years they have been voted “Top Comedy Show” by Winter Texans. This year’s show, as might be expected has a 50th Anniversary theme. “Musically they have chosen songs that have special memories for them, but nothing is really obscure. These are songs that everyone will know,” says Bernie And how about comedy? Over the past 50 years Bernie & Red have accumulated hours of comedy routines and stories and they are constantly writing new material. Much of their new material will be featured in this year’s show, which they promise is their best show yet. In addition to this new 50th Anniversary Show, Bernie & Red are presenting a number of their classic shows from previous years. Bernie & Red can be seen Jan. 9 at Mission West RV; Jan. 11, Llano Grande RV, Mercedes; Jan. 13, Alamo Rose RV; Jan. 16, Bentsen Palm Village RV, Mission, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Jan. 17, Bentsen Grove RV, Mission; Jan. 18, Valley View Estates, Mission. They can also be seen Jan. 24 at Mission Bell RV; Jan. 25, Winter Ranch, Alamo; Jan. 28, Texas Trails RV, Pharr; Jan. 31, Victoria Palms, Donna; and Feb. 2, Fun ‘n Sun, San Benito. All shows are at 7 p.m. unless otherwise specified. Pre-sale tickets are available for all shows.

Product Costume Show is unique tradition

This year’s Texas Citrus Fiesta events kick off Saturday, Jan. 17 with the Product Style Show, one of the most unique style shows ever developed in the United States. It is said to be the only original style show of its type in the country. The theme for this year’s Fiesta and style show is Old Time Rock & Roll, based on the music of the 50s and 60s. The style show will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Mission Community Center, 1420 E. Kika De la Garza Loop, Mission. Costumes are made out of base materials, which are then covered with citrus products that have been dried, powdered in a heavy-duty blender or prepared in a variety of other ways. While all costumes must be at least 10 percent citrus, a large variety of other agricultural products grown in the Rio Grande Valley are used. Red and green cabbage leaves, banana leaves, all shades of bougainvillea, sunflowers, blue plumbago and onion skins are among the plants frequently used to get the colors wanted for the costumes. All sorts of seeds and items such as pampas grass are used to create the decorations found on each costume. This year, entries in the primary and elementary age group include a carhop and a young girl in a poodle skirt. The teen

division features a dancer from American Band Stand also wearing a poodle skirt. There area four costumes in the adult division including a Lady Jukebox, a Go-Go Girl, Army Elvis and Annette Funicello. In the hats only division there is a Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer. Each of these costumes represents something that was symbolic of that era when Rock & Roll music was just getting started. The Product Costume Style Show is always both fascinating and entertaining. Audiences are fascinated by the artistry and creativity of the designers who spend many hours fashioning such beautiful costumes, relying solely on nature’s agricultural products to create beautiful colors and embellishments. They are entertained by the models – especially the young, elementary age children – who never fail to bring smiles and chuckles to all who observe them. For a highly unusual treat that can be found nowhere else on the planet, come out to the Product Costume Style Show Saturday, Jan. 17 in Mission. Admission is $5 per person.

First Entertainers Showcase unveils new talent By Kathy Olivarez It was a surprise performance by Johnny Ray Gomez, who only signed up for the showcase two days before, that sent a bevy of activity directors scurrying for the booking room after his performance in the Wednesday, Jan. 7, Entertainers Showcase. Gomez, who is from Omaha, played an accordion, sang a number of nonsensical songs and told joke after joke in his short performance. He entertained the audience with songs like “She’s Too Tall for Me,” “Alley Cat” and “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” with a humorous twist,” brought the activity directors to their feet, giving Gomez a standing ovation, something rarely seen at a showcase. Jason Whorlow of Nixon, Mo. was another favorite of activity directors. He was playing a keyboard although he says he brings his grand piano for booked performances. He sang light-hearted songs like “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog,” and “Great Balls of Fire.” He played “Desperado” and had someone from the audience hold his harmonica while he played it along with the keyboard. “Positively Country, Definitely Gospel,” composed of Jonathan and Deana Edwards sang great harmony. They per-

Tommy Helms form traditional country and gospel music and sang “Daddy’s Hands,” for the showcase. The great quality of their voices had activity directors hurrying to sign them for a session in their parks. J. C. Bullock of Branson was also popular. He plays a total of seven instruments in a full show, and cracks jokes to keep his audience laughing with delight. He sang “Mama Tried,” “Pilgrim & Stranger,” and “Louisiana Saturday Night.” The audience also liked Paul Eve, who See SHOWCASE pg. 48

the railroad where a trail from the Rio Grande crossed the track, a town that had recently been named Mission. This was back in the very early 1900's when Mission was still a frontier town, before it was incorporated into a city. Dr. Dawson was an author, well read and widely published. One of her most successful endeavors was the book titled “She Came To The Valley,” a tribute to her pioneer family's contribution to the growth of the lower Rio Grande Valley that later was made into a movie. The true story dealt with the formation of the City of Mission, the border raids by Mexican bandits, the arrival of the United States soldiers, and her mother's life in what was truly a frontier town. A special screening of the original film, "She Came to the Valley," will be shown at the Border Theater in Mission at 1 p.m. with a reception and exhibit opening to follow at the Mission Historical Museum See CLEO DAWSON pg. 48
