Gladys Porter Zoo has two new attractions

By Kathy Olivarez The Gladys Porter Zoo has two new attractions that will be on interest to visitors. The first is the new Russell Aquatics Center with 28 exhibits of marine life found in the resacas, Rio Grande River and Gulf of Mexico. According to Public Relations Assistant Arianna Barrera, the biggest attraction to this building is the interactive Stingray Touch Tank where children (of all ages) can actually reach into the tanks and feel the stingrays. The tank is large and it is fun to watch these funny looking sea creatures that seem to have a smile on their backs zipping back and forth in the tank to the delight of all. Another popular exhibit is a 300,000-gallon tank that is 26 feet by 26 feet tall. It houses a variety of fish found in the Gulf of Mexico including black drum, red snapper, sheepshead, snook, jacks, hermit crabs and, of course, sharks. In addition, there are a number of smaller tanks housing a variety of local marine life they may encounter some day at the beach or in a local resaca. According to Barrera, the exhibits are designed to teach local children and other visitors about the

Big Band Jam at Texas Trails Whether it’s a polka jam, Big Band, country or gospel jam, you’ll find hundreds of Winter Texans gathered in rec halls at RV resorts all across the Valley dancing or just taking in the wonderful sounds as fellow Winter Texan musicians perform on stage. The UTPA Winter Texan Survey reveals that about 90 percent of Winter Texans attend or play in jams at least some of the time during their stay here.

By Kathy Olivarez According to the bi-annual survey conducted by the University of Texas-Pan American, Winter Texans who spent the winter season in the RGV in 2013-2014 contributed $710 million to the economy of the Rio Grande Valley during their stay. There were an estimated 99,500 Winter Texans in the Valley during the season. The survey was conducted with the assistance of the Winter Texan Times and its publisher, Jim Brunson, who published and promoted the survey, and Dr. Teofilo Ozuna, Dean of the College of Business Administration. Dr. Penny M. Simpson D.B.A. compiled the data. A total of 1394 Winter Texans and 88 RV and mobile home park owners/managers responded. Based on data gathered the average Winter Texan is 71.7 years old, is married (85.9 Percent), is white (99.3 percent), and has been retired for more than one year (89.2 percent). Rising Star Review planned Jan. 10 at Mission Bell

For those wanting an opportunity to see some of the new talent that is auditioning at the Entertainers Showcases this January, the Rising Star Review will provide an opportunity to do just that. This show will feature completely new talent that has not yet performed for Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. The show will be held at Mission Bell Resort, 1811 E. Bus. 83, on Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at Mission Bell Resort and Alamo Rose Resort. Magician Roger Wayne For those who love magic the Roger Wayne show features a variety of illusions. From Georgetown, Ky., Wayne has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and Society of American Magicians for over 30 years. He is known for a magician-comedy performance featuring audience stunts that make participants laugh until they cry. He has performed on cruise ships, college campuses, at convention centers, shopping malls and a variety of other locations. He has appeared with headliners such as Ed McMahon and WGN’s “Bozo’s Circus” and on radio and television shows across the nation. Singer, Songwriter Jenny Casey Formerly from Oklahoma, Jenny Casey is now a singer and songwriter in Nashville. A self-proclaimed “late bloomer,” Jenny is a mother of four, and former schoolteacher who now makes her living as a singer and songwriter. She was inspired by idols Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and Gretchen Wilson as she developed her “fun grown-chick music.” She spent the summer in Europe on tour with her high-energy music show.

Tribute Artist Paul Eve In Branson, Missouri, where he now lives, Paul Eve is best known for his realistic tributes to Johnny Cash. The show has been seen at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater and also at Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Café. Eve also does tributes to Elvis and other performers. Elvis on Tour “Elvis on Tour” is another Branson-based show. In Branson, James and Loretta Lowrey perform “Dinner with Elvis” at Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Café, singing old Favorites of the King of Rock ‘n Roll. James has also entertained with the Legends in Hollywood, and with Dolly Parton, who stated he had the best Elvis tribute artist voice she has ever heard. Rolando Reyes No one in the Rio Grande Valle has a better voice than Rolando Reyes of Rio Hondo. His quartet, Rolando Reyes and 4 His Glory, will perform at the showcase and during the Rising Star Review. Reyes was formerly a member of The Deep River Boys, also of Rio Hondo. His new quartet 4 His Glory has not yet performed in the Valley for Winter Texans. Al Ragusin Show Band Al Ragusin, long known for his dancing horse shows, has now decided to do “the horse show without the horses.” Al will be playing conga drums and bongo drums while his wife, Brenda, will perform Tahitian, jazz, and tap dances plus a skit based on “Pretty Woman.” They will be joined by Tahlia, who sings Tejano (the words will be in English but the Tejano music is Spanish-style), along with country songs. The show includes popular songs and invites audience to sing along. For more information on the show call Robert Ferguson at (574) 361-2947 or Billie Ferguson at (865) 253-2514.

Roger Kenaston Band plans busy season in RGV

Longtime favorite Winter Texan entertainers, the Roger Kenaston Band is returning this season to provide some lively dance music every Wednesday at the Riverside Club in Mission and every Thursday at Wink’s Saloon, Grill & Roping Arena, Brownsville, along with other dances and shows throughout the area. The band will begin the season featuring National Traditional Country Music Hall of Famers: Roger Kenaston, wife Sharon, sister Vanessa, daughter Bobbi Jo, and long-time family friend, Jerry Porter. This group of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists has performed in the Midwest for several generations, including appearances in Branson and on RFD-TV’s Midwest Country Show. Roger, an award winning fiddle, do-

bro, mandolin, guitar player and singer, is the patriarch of the Kenastons. His wife Sharon, 2012 FAME upright bassist of the year, also plays drums, rhythm guitar, sings and acts as the emcee for the group. Roger’s sister Vanessa is an outstanding vocalist and offers her talents on rhythm guitar, bass, mandolin and drums. Roger’s daughter, Bobbi Jo, will make her first appearance in the Valley for the first week of dances as the drummer, bass and rhythm player. Also joining the group for the first time is “Chet Atkins style” picker, Jerry Porter. Jerry will team up with Roger to play some twin guitar licks as well as playing bass or rhythm guitar for additional variety. See KENASTON BAND pg. 11

Goldwing Express returns

Once again high-energy bluegrass music will reverberate through the Rio Grande Valley as Goldwing Express, composed of three Native American Creek Indians and their Irish father, bring their special type of entertainment to Winter Texans across the Valley. The boys and their father play such hot music it appears the banjo is going to catch on fire as the fingers move. Bob Baldridge, father, has been entertaining since the 1970’s and 80’s when he sang with his brothers and sisters. The family would gather at his grandmother’s home and spend the days singing. It made him want to start his own family band. After Paul, Steven and Shawn were born, he did just that. The family started their show in Okmulgee, Ok. and then traveled across country in a Honda Gold Wing in the 1980’s. The boy’s mother dubbed it the Goldwing Express, thus giving the group their show name. The group moved to Branson, Mo. several years ago where they perform. When not performing in Branson they are traveling other parts of the nation. They do about 250 shows a year. Bob plays mandolin, sings lead and does much of the comedy. Oldest son Paul sings high tenor and plays banjo. He does the traditional bluegrass singing for the group. Steven, the middle son, plays banjo and is responsible for the gospel music in the show. Shawn, the youngest, plays upright bass fiddle and sings the low notes. He spices up the show with a lonesome-sounding train whistle made from his mouth only. Because the boys’ mother was a fullblood Creek Indian, the boys don headdresses and dedicate a part of the show to their Native American heritage. Freddie and Sheila Show returns to RGV

Freddie and Sheila Pelletier return to the Rio Grande Valley to perform their new show from Jan. 4 to Feb. 8. Freddie and Sheila, from Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada, who have performed together for over twenty years, will make this their 14th year performing the RGV. Freddie, who plays lead acoustic and electric guitar, emulates the work of Chet Atkins and others playing classic country, bluegrass and 60’s rock. Sheila, on vocals and rhythm guitar, sings classic country, folk, 50’s/60’s and yodels. With a few new “tricks” up their sleeve, their new show demonstrates their exceptional musicianship and provides lots of laughs for their loyal followers.

Freddie started his professional career in country Fairboldt, Minnesota. He went on to play in Nashville and later formed his own band in Calgary. He also backed up singer-songwriter, Ian Tyson, writer of the Carter Family’s ‘”Four Strong Winds.” Over the years he’s played guitar for many artists including Ferlin Husky and Mac Wiseman. After 12 years of operating a music camp in the summer, this past July they tried a different venture, teaching guitar at a fly in fishing camp in northern Saskatchewan. They hosted thirteen people who took lessons plus fished the pristine Iskwatikan See FREDDIE & SHEILA pg. 08

Get ready to rock ‘n Roll with the Punches Family

Once again this season the Punches Family will be back in the Rio Grande Valley entertaining Winter Texans with rock ‘n roll oldies from the ‘50’s and 60’s. Performing old favorites like “Run, Run, Run,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “The Twist” the Punches Family will bring back memories and fun with their lively performances. Because The Punches are also known for their bluegrass and gospel performances, each show will include several of the songs for which the family is known in other areas. The Punches Family has been featured on Great American Gospel Show,

which plays on over 200 stations across America and many countries around the world. The family resides in Fredericktown, Mo, which is in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. However, they have been performing in churches, festivals, fairs and special shows across the country since 2009. Both parents play musical instruments and sing. From pg. 01 front. Because their target was the Winter Texan audience, the season ran from mid-December to mid-March. When Bob Comeau took over the band 2013, he made some major changes. The old music was donated to a service club so that the band selections could be upgraded. Music is now ordered from a gentleman in Grand Rapids, Mich. who owns a library of music with over 14,000 arrangements that can be emailed to the band. Today, the band plays music recorded by artists such as Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Les Elgart, Harry James, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Henry Mancini, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, with a bit of the Beatles, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Chicago thrown in for good measure. Comeau has a degree in music from the University of South Dakota where he taught band in South Dakota and Minnesota for five years before pursuing a career in insurance. But he never lost his love for music, and while living in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, he performed with Swing Beat Big Band and the Encore Wind Ensemble. In the Rio Grande Valley he also plays with the McAllen Symphonic Band and the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band. Back home in the summer he plays with local community bands. In addition to Comeau there area seven other local band directors who teach in

the Rio Grande Valley and seven retired band directors, mostly Winter Texans, who also play in the band. The band also has two retired military musicians. All of these musicians and others who join them have a great appreciation for the “big band sound.” According to Comeau, there are several types of fans that range from seasoned ballroom dancers to folks who just like to

move around to the music. Then there are people who don’t dance but come to listen to the music because they like the big band sound. Most performances are done in a show/dance format where different selections of the band will be featured along with instrumental soloists and vocalists. The band plays a variety of slow and up-tempo music with beautiful waltzes and Latin rhythms sprinkled through the

Comedienne Auntie Kreamsaugen delights Winter Texans “You can stay single and be miserable or get married and wish you were dead,” says, Auntie Kreamsaugen, the wise Scandinavian marriage counselor from Minnesota who has entertained thousands of Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. “Those are the only two choices.” She sagely adds. Wearing her apron, lace cap and long socks she looks like a Minnesota farmer’s wife, not the marriage counselor she proclaims to be. But the advice she hands out has a ring of truth to it and audiences love her. For many years Darlene Rolle has entertained crowds in the family-owned Jasper Theater in Park Rapids, Minn. When

she and her husband started spending winters in the Rio Grande Valley, she brought the delightful sagely wise Auntie Kreamsaugen to the audiences that visited the theater. This year the show she has developed for the Rio Grande Valley combines parts of several of the show that were voted the favorites at the Jasper Theater over a ten-year-period. She will do parts of a class reunion, an old-time radio show complete with sound effects, Tall Tales of Snoose Hollow, Minnesota and some church humor. And of course, no show would be complete without some sage marriage counseling thrown in for good

measure. In 2011 Auntie Kreamsaugen was named Best comedienne by FAME (Families Advocating Moral Entertainment) and was also named Favorite Comedienne by the Winter Texan Times for 2011 and 2012. In that competition, she had more votes than any of the winners in any other category both years. Auntie Kreamsaugen was invited last fall to Norsk Hostfest in Minot, North Dakota, which is the largest gathering of folks of Scandinavian descent to entertain. She will be returning this fall. He is an important part of the family’s vocal presentations, singing a few leads but mostly bass line in the quartets. Emily, one of the twins who are now 15 years old, started playing fiddle at 7. She has developed a rich voice and carries many of the high tenor parts in their music. She also often sings lead. Brook, the second twin, started fiddle at age 7 but moved on to dobro by age 9.

Entries being accepted for ‘Turning of the Quilts’ Mission Historical Museum is looking for antique – or just “old and interesting” – quilts for a “Turning of the Quilts” program to be offered at the museum in February. Quilts are presented stacked on a bed. As each quilt is shown, it is turned down to reveal the next quilt, until all have been presented. The museum is accepting vintage quilts now until Friday, Jan. 30. Quilts can be brought in Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Please provide as much information as possible can about the quilt, such as who made it, how old is it, how it was acquired, etc. Viewers would also be interested in any stories associated with the quilt. All quilts will be handled by trained and knowledgeable individuals. Winter Texans may bring more than one quilt for the presentation. “Turning of the Quilts” will be presented as part of the Awards Ceremony at the Eighth Annual Mission Quilt Show at the Mission Historical Museum at 2 p.m. on February 6. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off some family treasures, and maybe learn a thing or two about them as well. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty and 200 E. Tom Landry (annex building), in Mission. Admission is free. For more information, please call the Museum at 956-580-8646.

KENASTON BAND From pg. 03

The Roger Kenaston Band plays traditional country western dance music with a variety of 50’s, polkas, waltzes, big band, swing, bluegrass and more. Winter Texans can listen and dance to the Kenaston’s every Wednesday beginning Jan. 7 at the Riverside Club from 1 to 5 p.m. They will also be performing Thursdays at Wink’s in rural Brownsville beginning Jan. 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Kenastons may also be seen Friday, Jan. 9 at Citrus Valley in McAllen (dance); Jan. 20, Quiet Village, Donna (dance); Jan. 23, Alamo Rose (dance); Feb. 13 Citrus Valley, McAllen, Feb. 14, (dance), Gateway, Raymondville, (dance); and Feb. 22, Lakewood, Harlingen, (show). From pg. 01 coral reef with colorful fish. Another houses a giant sea turtle on loan from Sea Turtle, Inc. where it underwent rehabilitation after being found with an injury. Jellyfish have a tank of their own. Other exhibits teach about the marine habitat found in the local resacas that run through Brownsville. From turtles to giant catfish, these are the creatures the residents of Brownsville may encounter. Look for bass, soft-shell crabs and snapping turtles. Another small tank has fish that have been introduced into the area, such as Angelfish. Barrera said many people buy these fish for their aquariums but release them when they grow too big. Although they are not native to the area, so many have been released they now have a large enough population that they may easily be seen in the area. In addition to the new aquatics center, the new South Texas Discovery Center opened in November. According to Emma Mitchell who is coordinator for the center, there is 396 percent more educational space for the projects conducted at the zoo. The center can also be rented for birthday parties or other special events. It will be used for the annual Summer Safari classes that are offered each year so that children who are out of school can spend time learning more about the animals found in the zoo.

Snake and the Texas Bull Snake on one side. The other display cases show a variety of Texas critters including the Dung Beetles, the Texas Tarantula, the Texas Giant Millipede, the Texas Bark Scorpion and the Giant Vinegardon. The exhibit hall also features bio facts about the indigenous live animals on display. There is a display of cacti and of local seeds and weeds. Mitchell explained, in areas prone to drought, animals need more protection so the plants tend to have stickers and thorns to protect them. The drier the climate, the thornier the habitat. Gladys Porter Zoo is located in the center of Brownsville on 26 acres of land filled with tropical plants. It is home to over 1600 animals. Because of its tropical location, it has had a great deal of success with breeding exotic animals because the temperatures and conditions in the Rio Grande Valley are very similar to the native habitats of some of those animals. The zoo is divided into islands separated by resacas so many of the animals can be seen in what resembles their natural habitat. Animals of Africa, Asia, Tropical America and Indo-Australia can be found at the zoo. The zoo has a nursery to care for its newborn animals, a petting zoo, a free-

more exhibits. The zoo is located at 500 Ringgold Street in Brownsville. Take the 6th Street exit from Expressway 77/83 and go to Ringgold Street. The zoo is open daily all year long. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and $8.50 for seniors over 65. Take advantage of a warm sunny day in South Texas while friends up north are digging out from under three feet of snow and enjoy this tropical Texas zoo.

SURVEY

From pg. 37 Texans go to festivals around the Valley often. Another 72.8 percent enjoy going to at least one festival during their stay. There are many factors that affect the Winter Texan population. One is the US economy where fewer young people are willing to retire and spend their savings traveling to a winter paradise. From a high in 2009 when the Winter Texan impact was $803 million, there has been a decline to 2014’s $710 million. Survey results show the current Winter Texan population is aging, but local chambers of commerce, RV resorts and businesses are working together through the South Texas Coop to reinstitute a coordinated marketing campaign to help attract newly retired couples to come to the Rio Grande Valley.
