Plan a day in Weslaco

While visiting the Rio Grande Valley plan to spend a few days exploring the different facets of Weslaco, a mid-Valley city with a variety of interests and several great restaurants for good eating. Visitors to Weslaco may want to start their visit with a trip to the Weslaco Welcome Center, located at 275 S. Kansas, where a Winter Texan Coffee Bar is open for those who want to look at the brochures available. The center offers several documentary films for visitors to see according to interests. They are: “Birds of the Laguna Madre,” “ A Year in South Texan Wetlands,” “Historic ranches of South Texas,” “RGV Sugar Growers,” “Magic Valley,” and “Birds of South Texas.” The coffee bar opens at 9:30 a.m. Call (956) 968-2102 for more information. Visit Downtown Today, Weslaco is a thriving mid-size city in the middle of the Rio Grande Valley. Its downtown area features a palm tree-lined avenue. Wells of Weslaco, known for ladies’ apparel, and Lionel’s Western Wear are two of the mainstays of the downtown area. In addition, there is an art gallery, a shoe store and several jewelry stores, as well as several antique stores sure to catch the interest of shoppers.

The annual All Valley RV & Outdoor Show will be held Jan.14-18 at the Mercedes Livestock Showgrounds in Mercedes. The show will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For the second year in a row, the show has been expanded from RVs and mobile homes to include all kinds of equipment and vehicles that might appeal to owners of RVs and motor homes. This year’s show will include a wide assortment of items for those who enjoy the outdoors or the RV lifestyle. There will towable vehicles like cars and trucks people may want to purchase to tow behind their motorhomes when traveling. Motorcycles and boats are also expected to be on display. One vendor will be bringing sheds for storage on RV lots, and trailers designed for pulling four-wheelers and motorcycles. A new vendor to the show this year will have play stations for outdoor music sounds. So many vendors will be displaying The annual Golden Age Olympics put their products, it will take several hours on by the McAllen Parks and Recreation to see everything there. on Jan. 11. Leslie Howland, Marketing & Events Coordinator for McAllen Parks & Recreation, said competition would run through March. While the lists are usually online by the beginning of the year, Howland explained things were a little behind because she had been out on maternity leave. Good Excuse! (She had a little boy.) So those who looked earlier and couldn’t find the schedule online now know why. But the list should be up by the time this paper comes out on Thursday, she says. Howland said there will be several new events added this year. In the bake-off division: cupcakes, sweetbreads and yeast breads have been added to the competition. In other areas: Sudoku has been added Winter Texans are shown competing along with a Bird-a-thon. Estero Llano Grande is located at 3301 S. International Blvd, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. even days a week. Admission is $5 for adults. Weslaco is a mid-size Valley city that has diverse offerings for Winter Texan to visit and enjoy, but much like most of the Rio Grande Valley, it’s “modern day” development began as farmers from up north learned of the rich soil and favorable growing conditions year-round. Early Beginnings Weslaco gets it’s name from the W.E. Stewart Land Company that sold farming tracts of land to northerners who came down on excursion trains looking for agricultural land in the early 1900s. Originally part of a Spanish land grant belonging to Juan Jose Ynojoa, the American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company bought the land in 1913. Approximately 30,000 acres were sold to the W.E. Stewart Land Company that sold the land at $90 an acre to farmers who came on land excursions. They came on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico railroad owned by Uriah Lott and Lon C. Hill and others who developed the railroad that made agricultural production in the Rio Grande Valley possible. Uprisings along the border resulted in troops being stationed here in camps to keep the peace. One camp was located between Weslaco and Mercedes. This, combined with efforts by other communities to sabotage the development of Weslaco, made its future questionable but on Dec. 10, 1919 a sale was held. Lots in the City of Weslaco sold for $50 to $400. Those who made a claim had to choose a lot and camp on it until the day of the sale. Home of Harlon Block Weslaco was the home of Harlon Block, one of the men pictured in a Pulitzer-Prize winning photograph taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima when Marines got to the top of Mount Suri and planted an American flag there after several days of intense fighting. Today, Block is buried in Harlingen at the base of the Iwo Jima Monument on the grounds of the Marine Military Academy. During World War II, sandbag production was a peak industry in Weslaco that declared itself the “sandbagging capital of the world.”

Mission Quilt Show starts Jan. 9

The Mission Historical Museum’s annual Mission Quilt Show will be begin Jan. 9. This year there will be 23 quilts in three categories. The categories are machine-made bed quilts, handcrafted bed quilts and wall hangings. Winter Texans are invited to go see the exhibit and vote for the Visitor’s Choice award. On Friday, Feb. 5 the annual awards show will be held at 2 p.m. A special “Turning of the Quilts” program will be held in conjunction with the awards ceremony. Anyone who has an antique quilt they would like shown during this program can contact museum archivist Vernon Weckbacher quilt at (956) 534-5679 or go by the museum. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

Redhead Express limited shows The Redhead Express, one of The Rio Grande Valley’s favorite performing group, will be returning for just three performances in the Valley this season. Many Winter Texans have watched the Walker girls, who are known as the Redhead Express, grow from young girls into lovely young women. Originally from Alaska, the family moved several years ago to Nashville to help further the girls’ careers in the music business. Kendra, the eldest daughter, is a singer, songwriter, and leader of the band. Larae, second daughter, is the banjo player. Alisa is the third sister and fiddle player. Meghan is the youngest sister who plays an upright bass named Eddie.

The girls perform in great harmony singing popular songs – songs Kendra writes and songs selected for them by their Nashville sponsors. This year, Winter Texans can see the Redhead Express at Winter Ranch, 600 FM 495, in Alamo at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Jan. 14. Call 956-781-1358 for tickets. On Jan. 15 they can be seen at Llano Grande Country Club, 2215 East West Blvd., Mercedes. Call (956) 565-2228 for tickets. On Jan. 16 they can be seen at Green Gate Grove, 700 N. Bentsen Palm Drive. The British are coming!

Downton Abbey, Masterpiece Theatre, Bernie & Red, just 3 of the British imports that are firm favorites with US audiences, and one of the three will be appearing live throughout the Valley during the month of January. Yes, husband and wife comedy and music team Bernie & Red kick off the Texas leg of their Winter Tour on Jan. 2 and will be here until Feb. 2. Regular visitors to the Valley will need no introduction to this zany couple, but if you’re new to the winter scene, let’s just say that Bernie & Red are one of the most popular and well loved acts performing in the Rio Grande Valley. For newcomers, here’s a brief bio. Both were born in Liverpool, married 50 years, residents in Canada, professional entertainers for over 40 years. They have performed throughout North America and on cruise ships world wide. They have released over a dozen CDs, and in 2013 published their autobiography/songbook “Our Story.” Bernie & Red pride themselves on constantly writing and performing fresh and new material every year. And this year is no different. Their brand new 2016 show features new originals, plus their versions of classics from the 60s and 70s, and a very funny segment about senior discounts – and – The Great Carnac will return with all new predictions.

In addition to the brand new show, some of their older shows will be reprised at certain venues. (See concert listings in the Winter Texan Times.) There are several new locations at which Bernie & Red will be performing this year. Presold tickets are available for all shows. You can follow Bernie & Red on Facebook. www.facebook.com/bernieandred or at their website www.bernieandred.com

Liverpool Legends return for two shows

Get ready to step back in time to the days when the Beatles were the top band around the world. When many Winter Texans were students still in school, the Beatles – John, Paul, Ringo and George – wowed the music world, changing the style of music listened to by youth all over the world. The Grammy nominated Liverpool Legends were handpicked by Louise Harrison, sister of the late George Harrison. The group was selected for their voices, musical abilities and uncanny resemblance to the original Beatles they portrayed. They are the only Beatles tribute show with a family tie back to the original Beatles. The Liverpool Legends have performed their show for 10 years in Branson, Missouri where they have been named Best New Show, Best Show and twice were voted the Visitors Choice Award for Best Show. When not performing in Branson, they are on the road nationally and internationally. In 2015 they sold out shows in Mexico City and Quito, Ecuador. They performed at the Rose Bowl and recreated a concert done by the Beatles in Busch Stadium. They headlined at International Beatles Week in Liverpool, England where 100,000 Beatles fans crowded onto Victoria Street to hear

them perform. There will be two performances in the Rio Grande Valley this year. On Jan. 22 they will be at the Edinburg City Auditorium and on Jan. 23 they will perform at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium. For times and tickets call Ticket Zone at (956) 631-1411. Winter Texan tickets are eligible for a $5 discount.

Richard Lynch of Waynesville, Ohio is returning to Texas with his band for their third season of pure country music in the Rio Grande Valley. The band played in the showcase last January and proved to be popular with the activity directors, many of whom scurried out of the room and headed to the booking room after the band played. Lynch is an American Country music artist who has released many songs that charted in the world of traditional country music. His passion and purity for country music is similar to that of Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and Hank Williams. The thing that gives Lynch his edge is that he sings about what he is living. Lynch is a blue-collar man and an American farmer. His band performs 100 live shows a year across the United States. The band plays pure country, western swing, rockabilly, outlaw country and hard driving honky tonk. Don’t miss the opportunity to see Lynch who was named 2015 Humanitarian of the Year by Josie Awards, 2015 Band of the year by Josie/Country Blas Radio, 2015 Male Vocalist of the Year Nominee at Nashville Universe, and 2015 Entertainer of the Year by CMG Global Radio Network. Spanish lineage bulls used at Santa Maria bullfights

By Kathy Olivarez Those who attend the upcoming bullfight at the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria will be seeing bulls from the same lineage as the bulls that were used 1500 years ago in Spain where the art of bullfighting originated. According to Fred Renk, who owns the Santa Maria Bullring, the bulls are four years old and full grown weighing up to 400 kilos. The upcoming bullfight will be held on Sunday, Jan. 10, featuring highly-acclaimed matador Cesar Casteñeda, currently the fourth ranked bullfighter in Mexico, and Leal Montalvo of Monterrey, who will do anything he can to unseat Casteñeda. The bulls they will be fighting are the biggest ever fought at the Santa Maria Bullring, said Renk. They are the grandsons of Clarenero, the brave bull who was pardoned in Spain over 15 years ago. Slightly over 15 years ago a very brave Simental bull from the Domecq Dynasty, the bulls used in Spain, was pardoned after an especially great performance in the bullring. Renk explained the way it happened. First the matador put on a fine show with the bull that followed the

movements of the matador’s cape just as he was supposed to do. He did not look at the matador or charge him as many bulls do. He followed the cape. In Spain the second part of the bullfight involves the picador, who is on horseback and the banderillos, the men who stand behind barriers during the fight but jump out See SANTA MARIA pg. 37

While the banderillos distract the bull, the picador lances the bull’s kill spot a tiny bit in order to make him bleed and lower his blood pressure, which calms the bull and makes it easier for the matador to go in for the kill. Once the bull has been calmed, the matador then requests that he go for the faena – the fight to the death of the bull. In this case, the judge granted his request but when he raised his sword for the kill, the people in the audience rose up with a cry of “Indulto!” They were requesting the judge spare the bull because of his bravery and fine performance. As the uproar grew, the judge granted the request and the bull was spared. The bull was doctored where the picador had lanced him, given antibiotics and taken back to the ranch. No fighting bull is ever used twice in tthe ring. “They learn as much in 20 minsutes in the ring as an adult learns in 20 years. If you put them in the ring with a tmatador a second time, they’ll get you,” said Renk. Once the brave bull, Clarinero, was retturned to the ranch and healed, he was sold to the Don Rafael Ranch in Mexico where he was bred with 30 to 40 cows a year to create a line of fighting bulls with Spanish lineage in Mexico. Approximately 15 years ago, Renk bought one of the sons of

Maria Bullring opened, he has used these bulls and other bulls from the Don Rafael Ranch in his bullring. The difference between fighting in Mexico and in the United States is that it is much more dangerous. In the United States bullfights are bloodless. There can be no lancing of the bull to lower blood pressure or going for the kill at the end. In the United States, the matador must grab a rose taped to the kill spot on the bull’s back signifying the kill. It can be very dangerous for the matador to get that close. Instead of being killed once a bullfight is over, the bulls are sold to rodeos to be ridden by bullriders. Or they are used in poker table events where four cowboys are sitting at a table in the middle of a ring when the bull is let in the ring. Or Ring of Few where three cowboys stand in three circles and wait for the bull to charge. The last guy standing in his circle is the winner. Tickets for this Sunday’s bullfight are available at the Winter Texan Times at 1217 N. Conway, in Mission, (956-5807800), and at Border Tire, Bus 83 and Mayberry Road, Mission (956-585-8473). Or reservations can be made by calling the bullring at 956-481-3300. The gates open at 1 p.m. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp. Food and beverages are available at the bullring concession stand, and the restrooms are immaculate.
