Square dancing going strong

By Kathy Olivarez “Swing your partner, Do-si-do!” The words of square dance callers can be heard throughout the Rio Grande Valley as the peak of the winter season gets underway. With the full line-up of square dance opportunities available it is no wonder McAllen is considered “The Square Dance Capital of the World.” While the square dance jamboree that was once a custom in the Rio Grande Valley is no longer, there is still plenty of square dancing taking place at resorts all across the Rio Grande Valley. The Winter Texan Times decided to look into the amount of square dancing was going on in the Rio Grande Valley after an email from a reader questioning why the UTPA Winter Texan Survey printed in a previous eddition of the paper said there were fewer square dancers in the Valley than in previous years. The answer to that seems to be fewer square dancers took time to answer the survey than in years past, giving an indication square dancing

was waning. Caller Darryl Lipscomb said his classes are full and there is a full schedule of square dancing opportunities across the Valley. There is a square dance somewhere every day of the week. He said he calls a minimum of 10 dances a week. And for anyone interested in learning to square dance, there is ample opportunity as the Valley has 14 callers employed in different resorts, from Mission to Brownsville, who not only call dances but teach the various levels of moves needed for the types of square dances. Lipscomb explained the various programs. For those who have never square danced before, Beginners is the level to look for. Callers at that level will be teaching the basic moves in a square dance. Once a couple has mastered the basics in Beginners they move up to Mainstream where moves get a little more advanced. After Mainstream comes Plus, Plus-DBD, See SQUARE DANCE pg. 42

Liverpool Legends to perform shows in RGV

Get ready for a Beatles show that is as close to authentic as it gets when the Liverpool Legends make a return trip to the Rio Grande Valley to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles. Louise Harrison, sister of the late George Harrison, created this Beatles tribute group. From the moment the boys walk out on stage the physical resem-

blance to the original Beatles is unbelievable. Their accents, mannerisms and behavior have been carefully developed so they look and sound as though they are the original Beatles. And when they sing, they sound like the real thing. This is the group that performed a speSee LIVERPOOL LEGENDS pg. 47

Mama’s Wranglers return for action-packed season

The Jackson Family, known as Mama’s Wranglers, from Las Vegas, Nevada, are returning to the Rio Grande Valley for another action-packed season with their high-energy western show. Known nationally and internationally, the family has performed in 49 states and has also debuted in Canada and Europe. The star of the show is the multi-talented 13-year-old Skyler who started playing fiddle before she could walk. She took up piano at three and started yodeling at six. Today she sings, clogs, plays spoons, and even does sign language. She also plays violin. Sister Mikinzi, 19, plays fiddle, banjo, mandolin, drums and dances and sings. Brother Grayden, 21, plays guitar, fiddle,

When the kids were younger, they were known as “The Fiddlin’ Kids” but as they grew and their talents increased they changed their name to Mama’s Wranglers. When asked how the family became so talented, Tess says it was because of practice. When asked if they practiced everyday, she said Mama told them they did not have to practice everyday, just the days they wanted to eat! Elvis Festival is Jan. 10 in Los Fresnos

Elvis fans get ready. The annual Elvis Festival at Little Graceland, 701 Ocean Blvd., in Los Fresnos will be held Jan. 10. Elvis was born Jan. 8, 1935 and the festival is held each year on the Saturday closest to his birthday. The event is sponsored by Simon Vega, who served in the Army with Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n Roll. They served together at Fort Hood and again in Friedburg, Germany. It was while they were serving together in Germany they became friends, says Vega. When Vega returned home he began collecting all kinds of memorabilia depicting Elvis’ career. He collected all of

his musical albums as a hobby along with stamps, postcards, caps, scarves and even metal children’s lunch boxes. The year after Elvis died, Vega turned the top floor of his home into a tribute museum for Elvis. The items he collected along with a few items that others gave him are on display in the museum. For the past few years, Vega has been hosting an Elvis Festival where tribute artists come and perform their best renditions of Elvis’ music and compete to be voted the best Elvis of the festival. The museum will open at 9:30 a.m. See ELVIS FESTIVAL pg. 41

Pleasant Valley distributes gifts to poor at Christmas

By Deborah Kost Pleasant Valley Resort has much to offer to its Winter Texan guests and those Winter Texan guests are giving back in a Texas size way. Several years back someone had a great idea to give to needy families in the area. Through a lot of hard work, donations like the trailer donated by the owner of the resort, planning and perseverance, the program has flourished. The idea may have been small when it started,

but there is nothing small about it now. All season long the sewing ladies work hard on quilts to give to needy families. We are talking gorgeous, hand-made, love-filled quilts. The knitting people work hard at producing beautiful baby sweaters and blankets, scarves, hats, slippers and afghans. The Needy Family Committee works tirelessly throwing fundraisers and making money to buy groceries and supplies for the families. This season they

Hidalgo Watercolor Society plans ‘Running with Color’

The annual show and sale of works created by the Hidalgo Water Color Society will be held at the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Center, 921 E. 12th Street, Mission, Jan. 10 through Feb. 5 there will be an opening reception on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend. All of the works in the show are original works created by the members of the society. Those who attend the show will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite painting. The work chosen will be awarded the “People’s Choice Award” and will be the image used to promote the 2016 Hidalgo Water Color Society Show. The 2014 winner, a watercolor paining called “Roadrunner,” which was created

by artist Sue Sill, was used to create the poster for this year’s show. The group of artists in the Hidalgo Water Color Society is composed of members who live in the Rio Grande Valley full time, as well as Winter Texans from other parts of the United States and Canada who spend their winters in the Rio Grande Valley. Because of their diverse backgrounds, they produce a number of beautiful paintings with a variety of themes. Anyone interested in learning more about art is welcome to come to the reception and learn about the various types of art done at the Upper Valley Art League. even purchased a stove for a family that suffered the loss of everything in a fire. And if all of that isn’t enough, one special day of the year, just before Christmas, they organize an event to equal any event anywhere. Golf carts, all decorated in Christmas cheer line up behind a trailer and slowly weave their way through the park. It has to be slow, because all along

the way those wonderful and generous Winter Texans come out with even more donations and gifts to give to those who are less fortunate. The next day the volunteers work diligently to sort and pack all the gifts and donations, load them in vehicles and deliver them to the families. SanSee PLEASANT VALLEY pg. 41

Mission Historical Museum is looking for antique – or just “old and interesting” – quilts for a “Turning of the Quilts” program to be offered at the museum in February. Quilts are presented stacked on a bed. As each quilt is shown, it is turned down to reveal the next quilt, until all have been presented. The museum is accepting vintage quilts now until Friday, Jan. 30. Quilts can be brought in Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Please provide as much information as possible can about the quilt, such as who made it, how old is it, how it was

acquired, etc. Viewers would also be interested in any stories associated with the quilt. All quilts will be handled by trained and knowledgeable individuals. Winter Texans may bring more than one quilt for the presentation. “Turning of the Quilts” will be presented as part of the Awards Ceremony at the Eighth Annual Mission Quilt Show at the Mission Historical Museum at 2 p.m. on February 6. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off some family treasures, and maybe learn a thing or two about them as well. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty and 200 E. Tom Landry (annex building), in Mission. Admission is free. For more information, please call the Museum at 956-580-8646.

Valley under quarantine for Citrus Greening

By Kathy Olivarez Officials at the Texas A&M Citrus Center are asking Winter Texans to help control the spread of Citrus Greening in the Rio Grande Valley by inspecting citrus trees at their homes and RV parks for signs of damage caused by the insect that spreads the disease. Citrus Greening also known as HLB is the most destructive of citrus diseases. Last year a small area around Mission was under quarantine but this year the quarantine has spread to virtually the entire Valley from Rio Grande City to South Padre Island. In a meeting held Dec. 10 at the Weslaco Citrus Center office, Allison Williamson Outreach Specialist for the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center said the disease has moved north although it has not yet hit the San Manuel area in the Upper Valley or Raymondville in the Lower Valley. No citrus trees may be moved out of this area. Williamson, who was addressing a group of concerned Winter Texans, said the disease does not pose a threat to humans or pets but it can destroy citrus trees and is a serious threat to the South Texas citrus industry. It is spread by the Asian Citrus Psyllid. There is no cure and the trees must be removed to prevent contamination of other trees in the area. The disease is spread by moving infect-

ed plants from one location to another and by the Asian Citrus Psyllid, which is a tiny black insect about the size of a gnat that land on the leaves of the citrus plant. Williamson told the audience that if infected trees were not removed, they would eventually destroy other citrus trees and the entire South Texas citrus industry could be destroyed. Winter Texans were told to look for visible Asian Citrus Psyllids, asymmetrical blotchy mottling of leaves, raided or thickened corky veins and lopsided biter hard fruit with small dark aborted seeds. Williamson said it is against the law to move infected citrus plants out of the quarantine area. Winter Texans who are concerned about whether their trees have the disease should call the Citrus Alert Hotline at (956) 580-1917 or visit www. citrusalert.com. She also stated that Phyllis Waugh at Waugh’s Nursery in McAllen, (956) 686-5591, is a great source of information. Anyone who suspects their fruit trees area infected can call the citrus hotline or visit www.citrusalert.com. Another Winter Texan asked about the tags on his citrus trees. A red tag means the tree is infected and must be removed. Yellow, blue and pink all mean the trees are okay. Those trees are in an area where the Asian Citrus Psyllid has been found and have been checked but not yet showing signs of the disease.

If a Winter Texan has a tree with a red tag it must be removed. They are given the option of having trees nearby also removed to prevent the disease from spreading. William said that if a tree is removed, the person is given a voucher for $35 so he can replant another tree after the roots of the contaminated tree have been destroyed. Waiting about six months is recommended. Dr. Setamou said three must be sprayed any time there is new growth. The times of the year are now and in January, February and March. While there is no cure at the moment agricultural scientists are working with a particular type of wasp that feeds on the Asian Citrus Psyllid. Dr. Mamoudou Setamou, associate professor of citrus entomology, joined Williamson during the meeting to answer a couple of questions. He recommended spraying trees with Neem Oil (Use clarified hydrophobic extract of Neem Oil), an organic product that is effective for the egg and nymph stages but only suppresses the adults. Because it is organic, Winter Texans would have no difficulty spraying their trees using a 0.5 percent to 2.0 percent solution (one-half ounces to two ounces per gallon of water) on the trees. Because the product works in the same way as horticultural oils and insecticide soaps, thorough coverage of trees is required.

Azadirachtin concentrate is another form of Neem Oil and it is also organic. There are directions on the packages. Other chemicals like Imidicloprid, Malathion and Pyrethrum also work but may require a professional licensed person to apply them to the trees. The trees may require several treatments and may need to be sprayed when Winter Texans are back at home. Parks with a lot of citrus trees may want to make arrangement to hire professionals to come in and spray the park’s trees several times. One Winter Texan brought a sample of a leaf and questioned whether the brown damage on the leaf was from citrus greening. Dr. Setamou said that leaf had damage from Mexican Fruit Flies. The damage was on one side of the leaf and did not cross the center vein. Williamson said when residents leave in the spring, it is important they not leave any fruit on the trees. They should remove the fruit, which can be cleaned and taken with them. If they do not want the fruit they should donate it, or cut it in half before throwing it away. Doing this would help protect the plants from the Mexican fruit flies and cut down on the number of armadillos and citrus rats that come to the trees to eat. Another Winter Texan said when she See CITRUS GREENING pg. 41

It’s a step back in time for those who remember the days. Starting at 10 a.m. there will be opening ceremonies. Elvis tribute artists will start performing at 11 a.m. Among those participating will be Jorge Corona, Luis Salazar, Henry Vasquez, Domingo Carvajal, Danny Lee Garza, Rene Davis, Rob Carter, Eddie Carson, Joe Marques and Chad Roy. Some of these performers

From pg. 01 Advanced, C1, C2, C3a and C3b. At each level the calls get more complex. It is necessary to go through all levels because dances get more complicated and dancers are expected to be able to do all the maneuvers learned in previous levels. Lipscomb was conducting a Challenge-1 workshop at Tropical Valley Acres when the Winter Texan Times visited. He said the typical calls for a Challenge-1 such as Scootin’ and Plenty have about four different steps that were required when he made the call. In order to be able to know how to do the sequence, the dancers had to have learned parts of it in other levels of dance. Listening as he called his first dance calls included “quarter through,” “work in tandem,” “explode the wave.” “step and slide,” “girls crossfire,” “horseshoe turn,” two-thirds recycle,” “counter rotate’” and “scoot and plenty.” After the dance, Lipscomb explained that because this was a Challenge-1 dance, the commands each required several actions to complete. He added there are only two levels above this one so these dancers are pretty advanced in skills. “At this level, square dancing is similar to puzzle solving,” Lipscomb explained. “The dancer must follow the calls to solve the puzzle and end up back with his original partner at the end of the dance. Lynn Wilding of Winnipeg, Canada said Canada does not have as much square dancing and especially not at the challenge level. She enjoys spending three months in the Valley square dancing, while her neighbors in Canada are shoveling snow. Lipscomb is not the only caller in the Valley.
