RVs, motorhomes and fifth-wheels are trending these days. Many people moving into retirement age are looking at options to travel and do different things after spending many years of working and planning for retirement. From using them for camping, to a second home, to even for use as an office, these homes on wheels are used in more ways, and by more people, than ever.

by Henry Miller This was no normal jam...if anything, it was the Rock ‘n Roll/Big Band All-Star Jam. About 15 musicians set up on the stage at McAllen Mobile Park and, well, they jammed like they were on a red carpet. Among those who arrived at the invitational event include Jay and Tammy, Jean-Louis Lavoie, Howard O. Bedient, Pat Arguello, Deanna Nelson, Wild Bill and Susie Q, Del Puschert – all musicians with great experience, immense talent and a deep passion for music. Jay and Tammy Roy drove from Port Isabel just to spend three hours with fellow musicians and more than 200 people who packed the dance hall for this special treat. Famous matadors to perform Saturday

As Santa Maria Bullring, the only bullring in the United States, marks its 19th year, this weekend’s bullfight is being dedicated to the passing of American icon David Renk, “El Texano,” who left an impressive mark on the bullfighting world, performing triumphantly at the biggest bullrings in the world in Mexico and Spain before being injured, forcing his retirement. Jack Comeau of Manitoba, Canada, dances with his partner during the New Year’s Eve Dance at Bit-O-Heaven RV Park in Donna.

David Howard politely excused himself from the conversation. Time was of the essence. “I have to go give my wife our New Year’s kiss,” he said. The time was early still for South Texas standards on this day - 9:30 p.m. - but the happy couple rang in the New Year before anyone else. It’s something they are used to doing because of where they live the rest of the year, in the extreme eastern province of Labrador and New Foundland – more than 4,200 miles from the Rio Grande Valley. “We’re closer to England than we are here,” Howard said. Yet the annual 10- to 14-day drive didn’t hinder them from being at Bit ‘O Heaven RV Park, in Donna, where they reside in the winter months, for the New Year’s Eve dance. They were listening to the country band Buck ‘N Crazy on this night and celebrating along with another 250 people dancing, eating and drinking to usher in what soon would be 2019. Bullfight dedicated to David Renk

Gloria, Texas is Michelito Lagravere. He will perform along with the famous matador Manolo Martinez and Leal Montalvo, who won the Golden Bull Award last year at Santa Maria, and was also awarded symbolic ears and tail on two occasions in 2018. Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring, said Lagravere is one of the world’s top ranked matadors and he has just returned from a triumphant tour of Spain and France. “His first performance in the U.S. was in La Gloria when he was only 10 years old.,” Renk said. “He faced a young bull as if it was nothing and went back to basketball and shot baskets. “His career went on for eight more years through the semi-pro ranks of matador and he received his doctorate at age 18,” Renk explained. “He has been a cyclone in the bullfight world ever since, appearing in some of the largest bullrings in the world.” Speaking of the upcoming matador, the famed Manolo Martinez said, “Michelito is a prodigy.” The fourth matador performing Saturday is Daniel Ayala, the kid from Monterrey who has been performing all over the

Mexican Republic. He has been awarded trophies in most all his performances, including recently at the big plaza in Guadalajara. The bulls for the January corrida are the big bulls shown on the ad in today’s paper. They are from the dynasty of Martinez, bred on the famous ranch El Colminar Viejo in Mexico. “They are huge! Well over 1000 pounds,” Renk said. Call the bullring at 956-481-3300 to make reservations and for directions. Pay upon arrival. All tickets are the same price as last year $30 sun, $35 shade and ringside covered box seats are $40. Children under 12 free. Gates open at 1 p.m. and there’s great food and entertainment prior to the bullfight. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp.

Top-ranked matador Michelito Lagravere, shown executing a daring pass with a 1,000-pound bull charging dangerously close to the matador, will be co-star of this weekend’s bullfight at the Santa Maria Bullring.

RGV Woodcarving Show is Jan. 11-12

The 2019 Rio Grande Valley Woodcarving Show will be held from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, at the Nomad Shrine Club, located at 1044 W. Nolana, Pharr. If you can imagine it, they can probably carve it. Hundreds of exhibits in approximately 27 show categories will be on display during this popular two-day event. Categories include carvings of animals, mythical creatures, jewelry, carousel animals, knife carvings, wooden toys, spoons, gourds, bowls and wood burning. Most categories also include sub categories. Admission for the event is $3 and door prizes will be given every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show. Entries will be judged by Charlotte Phillips and Desiree Hajny. Two prolific carvers known for their unique styles. Phillips is from Fort Worth Texas and known for her delicate floral carvings, Indian baskets and female caricatures. Her unique carving style and original designs were quickly honored as award winners in regional and national shows. Hajny, of Blue Hill, Neb. has been involved in the arts for the past 32 years as

a teacher and is the author of six books. She has been creating wood sculptures of mammals since 1985. She has garnered 25 best of show honors, more than 150 first-place awards and 18 people’s choice awards. She has instructed seminars in 34 states and three Canadian provinces. Hajny was a founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America and the first female. In 2003 she was the third recipient of the Wood Carving Illustrated Woodcarver of the Year. Rally on the Rio The two-day woodcarving show will be followed by the 2019 Rally on the Rio, Monday through Saturday, Jan. 1419, at the Nomad Shrine Club. The rally is an opportunity for woodcarvers of all skill levels (and those wanting to learn) to participate in carving, pyrography and painting classes with nationally known instructors. There will also be carving supplies available and carvers can have their tools sharpened. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and will conclude by 4:30 p.m. each day. For more information, visit rgvwoodcarvers.org or call Fred Stenman at (320) 253-2132 or Jim Crawford at (956) 2796013

said. “There are some mariachi style sounds that you might hear right out of Reynosa, along with bluegrass instrumentation. The last album we had has been considered for a Grammy for album of the year. The whole goal with this album was to win that award.” Despite just being 32, with two children ages 4 and 7 (“and one on the way, which is both exciting and terrifying”), he was working with a friend in the studio who suggested he put together a “Billy Droze Greatest Hits” record. “That scared me and made me feel old really fast,” he said. “Life is crazy. I’ve had a beautiful career and have been blessed at the end of each day. We need to thank God for the shortcomings that make us who we are.” Droze also said that while he loves to entertain, he also uses his musical platform as a way to testify and, hopefully, help others. “So many people are hurting in this world,” he said. “People come to shows and I guess I preach or give little seminars about life, about being successful and being unsuccessful. I just talk to folks and try to be a humanitarian for other people and help them through what I’m able to do – that’s music.”

Helen Russell & Company

Helen Russell remembers music being a part of her family ever since she was a child, when her parents would travel to entertain and encouraged her to sing and learn to play multiple instruments starting at the age of 6. From that love of music she went on to being in various bands as a teenager, until her dream of being a full time musician came true at the age of 18 when she was offered an entertainment position with Lee Mace’s Ozark Opry, a historic, Branson style show that ran for 53 years where she was a featured vocalist and musician for 19 seasons. It was at this show that she met her best friend and husband Elvis, who shares her love for music and entertaining and now they travel the United States as Helen Russell & Company. Their award-winning stage shows and dance music entertains thousands of people annually and has evolved into a fulltime career. They have the complete package and are the most versatile duo around! Credits include Charlie Daniels Talent Roundup Finalist, Branson performances, and multiple winner at many banjo competitions. They have a must see show. Winner of the 2018 Valley Star Award, “Best Small Band Variety Show” in the Rio Grande Valley, Helen Russell & Company is a legendary show that is one of a kind. Their home base is Osage Beach, Mis-

Williamson Branch making musical achievement

As the Williamson Branch, the bluegrass family band with the rich sound, soaring vocals and prolific harmonies, departed the Rio Grande Valley following a great beginning to 2018, they couldn’t have mapped out a much better, or busier, remainder the year. And that hustle and bustle continues into 2019 as the group returns for a full slate of shows over the next two months in the Rio Grande Valley. “We are always excited to come back to the Valley,” said Kevin Williamson. “We meet new people every year, get to see others that we have made friends with and just have a lot of fun.” It was at the end of 2017 when the group signed on with independent label Pinecastle Records. In July 2018, Williamson Branch released their third album, entitled “Free.” The single and the video with the same name later hit the charts and have received quite a lot of airplay. Even bigger, it has received a lot

of airplay on Sirius/Cm radio’s bluegrass, considered the top station around the world when it comes to bluegrass. “It’s the Holy Grail of bluegrass music,” Williamson said. “There’s no place else you can turn on your radio for nothing but bluegrass. There’s just so much happening.” That isn’t all of the excitement or movement in recent months. The onetime five-person band, which includes dad, Kevin; mom, Debbie; and daughters, See WILLIAMSON pg. 9

WINTER TEXAN TIMES WILLIAMSON

From pg. 8 Melody (19), Kadence (16) and Carolina (9); has added a sixth person, 18-year-old Mississippi native Anthony Howell, who plays mainly banjo but can play nearly any instrument. “We’ve seen him and watched him grow as a musician for the past four or five years.” Kevin Williamson said. “Adding him really fills out our sound and gives us more options when we are looking for the right instrumental orientation. It also gives us a lot of flexibility if we want to send one of the girls out with a mic into the audience to interact.” In October, the Williamsons decided to make a simple YouTube video of the three girls singing the gospel classic “I’ll Fly Away.” What they’ve received so far –8.8 million views on the Country Rebel Clothing Facebook videos page – has been nothing short of staggering. “We were in front of this historic church and it was Oct. 14 when we posted it,” Williamson said. “Now it’s almost reached 9 million views. As a result, a lot of people have been reaching out, wanting to talk to us. It’s been really fun watching it fly.” For the year, Williamson Branch has had three different songs hit the charts, including Bluegrass Today and two gospel charts.

www.wintertexantimes.com “We’re just so busy – when we get to the Valley the girls will put so much time into our Faith, Family and Freedom show and we have shows almost every night,” Williamson said. “There’s been a lot of stuff happening – it’s an exciting time right now.” Williamson Branch Show Schedule Jan. 9 7 p.m. McAllen Mobile Park, McAllen Jan. 10 7 p.m. Llano Grande, Mercedes Jan. 11 6:30 p.m. Winter Green Estates, Mission Jan. 12 7 p.m. Sunset Palm RV Park, Brownsville Jan. 13 6:30 p.m. Lakewood RV Resort, Harlingen Jan. 15 7 p.m. El Dorado Acres, Palmview Jan. 16 7 p.m. Gateway RV Park, Raymondville Jan. 17 7 p.m. Winter Ranch RV Park, Alamo Jan. 18 7 p.m. Eastgate RV Park, Alamo Jan. 19 7 p.m. Tropic Winds, Harlingen Jan. 20 7 p.m. Southern Comfort, Weslaco Jan. 21 7 p.m. Lemon Tree RV Inn, Mission Jan. 23 7 p.m. Paradise Park, Pharr

WINTER TEXAN TIMES BIG BAND

From pg. 1 a New Year’s event. They have performed in 49 states (Hawaii still on the list), nine provinces (only Saskatchewan remains) and several special events and national and international festivals. “That was a wonderful group. We were really glad to be guests there and invited to come,” said Tammy, adding that they decided to stay home these days and work on their music business and relax on their two acres where they spend time feeding the deer, foxes and other animals they share the land with. “This was a lot of fun.” Puschert, a one-time saxophonist for Elvis Presley, almost brought the house down with his solo during Ray and Jane Kumor’s rendition of “Mustang Sally.” While his 85-year-old body carried him to the mic, by the time he was done jamming and swaying and putting on a show, there was no doubt that a younger man returned to his seat. Puschert literally breathed an exciting life into his instrument and that energy carried throughout the crowd. “I love playing with good musicians,” he said. “This is fun.” Puschert could be heard on many songs doing fill, adding some improv and having as much fun as those on stage, those in the crowd and those dancing on the dance floor. The show was a Who’s Who of Valley Musicians (at least part time). “I have to take a moment to talk about this guitar player next to me,” said Jean-Louis Lavoie, the park’s regular guitarist who played along, Jay Roy. “This man is one of the classiest guitarists, one of the most professional musicians and nicest person I have met. He can really play it.” “Hey, what about me,” Tammy joked from across the stage, bass in hand. Then

www.wintertexantimes.com

a special improv joke session took place that kept the crowd laughing and made it seem like that group had performed together for years. While country jams are the mainstay of jams across Winter Texan parks in South Texas, the rock ‘n roll jam seems to be building momentum and trending. Green Gate Grove in Mission recently started one and Casa del Sol will take over the jam that was held at McAllen Mobile Park, which runs its rock ‘n roll jam from November through December and begins it again in March. Host and trumpet player Pat Arguello said that over the years the jam has transitioned from a big band/rock ‘n roll jam to almost explicitly rock ‘n roll. That in part is due to a different generation – and how could anyone not like the lineup. Some of the performances included Puschert with “After the Luvin’,” Howard O. Bedient with “Route 66,” Arguello with “Caravan,” Lavoie with “It’s All Right, It’s Ok,” Dean Schilling with “Little Runaway,” Lily and Bob Wiebe with “Sea Cruise,” Gerry and Eloise Rutherford with “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and Jane Kumor performed “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” among many others. “It was a really good jam,” Arguello said. “Jay and Tammy being in town and showing up just made it extra good. It was a lot of fun.” “There were a lot of good musicians and we really enjoyed being there,” Jay said. “I was infringing on Jean-Louis’ stage so when he let me go, I played – it was stage etiquette and it was fun. There were top-shelf musicians there, for sure and we were proud to be a part of it.” The rock ‘n roll jam will continue at 1 p.m. Saturday at Casa de Sol, located at 400 N. Val Verde Road, Donna.

Every Friday Night Victoria Palm’s own Chef Marcus prepares four varieties of fish for park residents and guests alike. The Fish Fry is a buffet line, so patrons can take as many trips to the counter as they like. Prepared four different ways, there is a style and flavor for everyone to enjoy. First, the Pescado Veracruzano is cooked with black olives, onions, capers and tomatoes for a savory “south of the border” taste. For those who prefer a flavorful Baked Fish, their second option is served over a creamy garlic sauce. The third mouthwatering option is the popular Fried Fish, dipped in a batter of Panko crumbs for an extra crispy crunch. Finally, the fourth selection is the cajun spice Blackened Fish sautéed to perfection. For those who would like a hot and savory cup of seafood gumbo, they have that too. Offering a host of options, the buffet carries garden rice, creamy macaroni, crispy French fries, hushpuppies and cornbread. Chocolate pudding and tapioca are available for dessert. The fish fry, held on Friday nights from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., is priced at $9.95. Another day to mention is Wednesday’s Build your own Pasta Bar and Fried Chicken Night. From 4pm to 7pm, you can have your chef prepare your pasta to order using a variety of noodles, vegetables, proteins, and pasta sauce. Fried and baked chicken are also available on the counter, along with a healthy salad bar. The holidays are around the corner and Victoria Palms hosts outstanding traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Buffets. The Christmas menu includes deep-fried Cajun turkey, garlic roasted turkey, roast beef au jus, and cranberry stuffed pork chops. These main entrees will be joined by buttered mashed potatoes, buttered corn, green beans sautéed with bacon and onions, mashed sweet potatoes, Cajun jambalaya, and roasted cauliflower and cabbage. These will be complemented with a spinach and strawberry salad. For desert select from pecan, strawberry, rhubarb or pumpkin pie. The Holiday Buffets are open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost for adults is $19.95, and children $9.95. Victoria Palms Restaurant is located at 600 Kingston Way, Donna. JANUARY 09, 2019 CELEBRATE

From pg. 1 of Newfoundland and Labrador and exists because of the location of the island and the fact that it was a separate dominion when the time zones were established. Because it was separate from Canada at the time, it had the right to adopt its own time zone. Because of where it is located, New Foundland gains a lot of attention for many “firsts.” An example would be in the movie world, where it will be the first to show “World Premieres,” and the province makes sure the rest of the provinces know this. Obviously, they tend to also be the first ones to “spread the love,” when the New Year rings in. “That’s why we have the saying ‘May you be in heaven a full half hour before the Devil knows you’re dead,’” Howard joked. Texas Trails Celebration It wasn’t just Winter Texans who enjoyed celebrating the end of 2018 and the new beginnings. A group of local Valleyites joined the Winter Texans at Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr as they enjoyed the country sounds of Jealous Heart. Dan and Nancy Sharp, or Grand Rapids, Mich., were especially enjoying the

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

www.wintertexantimes.com night at Texas Trails. Dan is the chef at the park and had the opportunity to be on the receiving end as opposed to the cooking end. Still, he said when he’s cooking – from Angus burgers to a special chicken breast to other options – he does it “homestyle.” Debbie and Arnie Lorenz, from Malden, Ill., have been married for 38 years, lived in Bit ‘O Heaven for five and said they planned their lives accordingly, so they would be ready for the retired life. That being said, there was no need for any New Year’s resolutions – other than continued health and more chances to be with friends. “I don’t do resolutions,” Debbie said. “Besides, I’d break them in a week or two anyway.” The New Year is a great starting point for so many things in life. “I really want to quit smoking,” said John Holleman, who along with his wife Linda has been a Winter Texan since Nov. 6, this year. “I really need to quit smoking.” His laugh and smile only added to his determination that this could be the year where that resolution – one of the most common and toughest resolutions – became reality. For Jerry Evins, the New Year was a bit bittersweet. One of the first ones to

arrive for the New Year’s Eve bash, his contagious smile and friendly personality overshadowing the fact that his world has not been the same since his wife died a year ago. “We were married for 65 years and went together for four before that, starting in eighth grade,” he said, adding that they knew each other since the first grade but once they started dating he knew “this was the one, the love of my life. I knew it immediately,” he said. After all those years together, following her passing he sold his 3,000-square foot home in Edinburg and decided to look for a Winter Texan park to move into. “What did I need that big of a home for,” he said. “I found this place, bought a mobile home, built a deck and my daughter helped me. I’m going to get some furniture to put on the deck and then just blow smoke at people. I like doing that.” While he has only been in the park for a short time, he’s made some friends and on this night even hit the dance floor a couple of times. Talk about hitting the dance floor, that was where many couples spent most of their night, either line dancing, waltzing, doing the polka or just freestylin’ it as Buck ‘N Crazy – made up of lead vocalist Roy Torres, guitarists Jason Moreno and Isaac Bazan, drummer Adam Garcia, bassist Patrick Garza, keyboardist Jesse Flores Jr. and accordionist Jess Flores played a wide assortment of music where the dance floor was always active.

JoJo Tessier and Jack Comeau, of Manitoba, Canada, were on the dance floor more than at their table of fellow Canadians who danced the night away. “We are passionate about our celebrations,” Comeau said. “We like to have a good time and to party and celebrate things like this. This is fun. This is why we worked so hard for so many years. Happy New Year!”

WINTER TEXAN TIMES RV SHOW

From pg. 1 For those looking to upgrade, replace or just dive in for the first time into the recreational vehicle world, the 2019 All Valley RV and Outdoor Show is the perfect place to check out everything one could want when it comes to that lifestyle. The show, in its 39th year, will be held Jan. 10, 11 and 12 at the Mercedes Livestock Show Grounds, located at 1000 N. Texas Ave., in Mercedes. The event is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday. Friday’s hours are extended “so those who are working can still get out of work, go enjoy some carnival food and see what technology has done to the RV world,” Crouch said. “It’s amazing.” “There are probably 50 vendors here for everything to do with RVs – equipment, accessories, backup centers, entry steps that fold down that are sturdy and no longer springy like before – people really enjoy that,” said John Crouch, manager of the RV

RON HOOVER

From pg. 22 free tickets, and free health screenings will be available during the open house. Dustin said, this is a great opportunity to check out hundreds of RV units now in stock at Ron Hoover and see what kind of deals may be available on 2018 models that they want to move out. “It’s an excellent time to buy and trade and get a really good deal on a new RV,”

Station and director of the show, presented by the RGV Chapter of the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association. “There are setups for outdoor kitchens, stereo hookups; everything you need and even things you didn’t realize you needed.” Vendors will be indoors, under the roof of the Francis R. Cooper Event Center, part of the Livestock Show Grounds campus. There is no charge for parking and admission to the show is $5. “Everything these days is lighter, brighter, all about LEDs and all about technology,” Crouch said. “Technology has been the biggest change over the past 40 years. You can walk away from your RV and you have an app that will do everything as if you are right there – from security to changing the temperature, or how the air flows – you can do it on a remote or on your phone.” Crouch said he expects 7,000-10,000 people at the three-day event. There will also be fifth wheels and travel trailers on display as well as park models and destination booths such as Osprey Cruises and the City of Kerrville. Sun Racing will again be at the All Valsaid Dustin Hoover. “We have a ton of inventory,” he added. “We have so much that we have 50 to 100 trailers over in our overflow lot.” Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center is located at 101 Expressway 83 in Donna (on the south side of the expressway). Extra parking is available on North Ave. behind the dealership, and golf cart shuttles will be provided all along North Ave. to the store.
