Texas Citrus Fiesta Costume Show this weekend
By Kathy Olivarez No style show in the world is quite like the Texas Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Style Show where costumes are made from Valley agricultural products. The idea of the Product Costume Style Show was born in 1932 as a way to advertise the citrus industry of the Rio Grande Valley. The idea worked, as these uniquely beautiful costumes have been featured in National Geographic, Southern Living and Texas Monthly magazines. In the early years, fresh fruit was used to adorn the dresses, but over the years, the art has been refined to craft exquisite creations using Valley citrus, fruits, vegetables and plants that have been dehydrated, pulverized, microwaved or blended, then applied to the fabric for decoration. The designer has to learn the art of using a wide variety of Valley products to create a rainbow of colors to enhance each creation: Tangerine peel for orange, bougainvillea blossoms for red, and burnt citrus wood for brown. Other products often used include white, purple or yellow onionskins, papaya, cantaloupe and orange seeds, and leaves and flowers of a wide variety of plants. Every part of the citrus tree
Rock n Roll was the theme for last year’s Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Show, as the winning costumes took the form of poodle skirts, a juke box (center), Annette Funicello and Elvis Presley in uniform. can be used for different purposes and colors including the citrus peel, seeds, leaves, citrus wood and the fruit itself. Designing and putting together a product costume isn’t quite as easy as some may think. It takes each designer several years to come up with techniques that work well, so designers with the most skills made the
most elaborate costumes, while newer designers had simpler costumes. “For us, it is a family project where everyone bonds together to make the costumes and see that everything comes out right,” said Sylvia Gonzalez, a veteran costume maker of four years experience. See COSTUME SHOW pg. 31
Santa Maria Bullring presents Lady Matadora
By Kathy Olivarez Get ready for heart-stopping thrills and action as, on Jan. 24, Santa Maria Bullring presents the return of Lupita Lopez, one of only two active full women matadors in the world. Lopez is known for her heart-stopping action of dropping to her knees before a charging bull to pass him with her cape. Once the excitement is over the fans rise up with cheers of “ole!” for her bravery. Lopez was a regular at Santa Maria from 2007 to 2012, where she became a Winter Texan favorite. Her fans named her the “Queen of the Santa Maria Bullring.” At the time she was performing at Santa Maria, Lupita was semi-pro or a novillera. She had not yet become a full matadora. Lupita’s luck took a turn for the better in 2011 when a McAllen resident who wrote for the New York Times was home on vacation and attended one of her bullfights. The story made the paper and brought her national attention and an invitation to Plaza Mexico to earn the title of full matadora. To be invited to Plaza Mexico, the world’s largest bullring, a matador must fight a minimum of 25 fights a year. Lupita Lopez is one of only two active woman full matadors in the See SANTA MARIA pg. 39 world.

Billy Droze to perform last RGV concert Jan. 16
Billy Droze, former lead singer of Grammy Award winning Shenandoah will perform a special concert for fans at the Border Theatre, 905 N. Conway Avenue, in Mission, on Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. In addition to being lead singer for Shenandoah, Droze is a well-known Nashville songwriter. His father, Bob Droze, who performed in the Rio Grande Valley many times will be his special guest. Tickets are $7. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1986, the 10th of 12 children, Billy Ryan Droze grew up in Alabama knowing that music was his life as far back as he can remember. “It’s as if I was inserted with a computer chip that made my life revolve around music.” But the reason is just as likely the influence of his father, Bob Droze, a dedicated country, gospel, and bluegrass musician, even now that he’s in his 80s. Billy was on stage with his dad by the time he was 4 years old, and spent his childhood singing with him everywhere from churches to bluegrass festivals to honky-tonks, developing a passion for traditional country, gospel, and roots music that has influenced him ever since. He learned to play guitar when he was 12, and as a teenager would perform anywhere, anytime, for anyone who would listen, sometimes walking miles down country roads, carrying his guitar, just for the chance to play a few songs. By the time he was 16, Billy’s dad had moved on to Texas, so he followed him there and spent a year or so playing with his band. Then after rambling around Texas for a while, he decided it was time to move to Nashville, where he’s lived
ever since. Continuing to play anywhere he could, and constantly honing his skills as a songsmith and musician, Billy steadily expanded his ever-growing fan base, dramatically increased by several tours singing lead for Grammy-winning Shenandoah (using the name Billy Ryan). Though signed by RCA/Sony BMG as an artist shortly after arriving in Nashville, that never developed into what he’d hoped for, since then Billy has also been a staff writer, with publishing deals that resulted in several good cuts that include “You Never Know,” - Darryl Worly or Shenandoah, “That’s Why I Run,”- Billy Yates (#1 in Europe); “Sunday Clothes” - Randy Kohrs,”Big Pain” – Marty Raybon; “Bottle Was a Bible” – Junior Sisk; “Like I Do” - Jamie O’Neil; and “I Know Better” - The Grascals, among others. In response to a family tragedy and the need for a change of scenery, Billy decided to expand his horizons by booking a thirteen-city, nine-country tour of Eastern Europe to promote his third independent album, “Ready For The Ride.” Extremely well-received by fans and reviewers a like, and earning him three #1 singles on the European Hot Disc charts, this tour also led him to Lithuania where he found his soul mate. And when he returned to the U.S. it was with his new wife, Marija (whose lovely voice blends perfectly with his) and their sons, Nickie and Timothy. In addition, he has appeared in Country Weekly numerous times, as well as other magazines and Web sites in the US and Europe, and has had four major-network country music videos. At only 29, Billy Droze has acquired the title of “hit songwriter” and has been touring and making music non-stop for more than a decade. This truly unique artist and highly prolific songwriter, with lyrics that dig deep into the heart of life, melodies and a guitar style that combine his traditional roots with a modern twist that’s all his own, and a voice so beautiful, earthy and sincere that every song gives you goose bumps, is just getting started. Freddie and Sheila introduce new show
Freddie and Sheila are now performing at various RV resorts all across the RGV with their all new show. Their final show of the season will be at Palmdale on Feb. 4, so don’t mess around and miss out on a good thing. Freddie, on lead acoustic and electric guitar and vocals demonstrates his heritage by clogging while playing guitar. He plays country, bluegrass and 60’s rock instrumentals and has spent his life learning the Chet Atkins style of guitar picking. Sheila, on vocals and rhythm guitar, sings classic country, folk, 50’s/60’s and yodels. Their new show proves to showcase their exceptional musicianship, singing and provide lots of laughs! Freddie has played guitar for Ferlin Husky and Red Sovine to name a couple. He also backed up singer-songwriter, Ian Tyson (writer of the Carter Family’s ‘Four Strong Winds’) and fiddler, Al Cherney who was a regular on the Tommy Hunter Show, a Canadian music show that aired for years. The married duo has performed at resorts each winter in Texas, Arizona and California for 15 years and across western Canada in the summer. Mission Bell/Tradewind RV Resorts in Mission is again sponsoring the Freddie and Sheila Show. The duo offers a guitar class each Monday at 1 p.m. from Jan. 4 to Feb. 1 at the resort. It’s free to Mission Bell/Tradewind residents and just $10 per lesson to out of park guitarists. All levels are welcome and there is no pre-registering. Just bring a guitar. Freddie and Sheila operated a guitar and music camp at their ranch outside the small town of Birch Hills, SK (1 ½ hours north of Saskatoon) for 12 years. They
now partner with a fly in fishing camp in northern SK to provide a unique fishing and guitar instruction experience. Betty Rydell has new show for 2016 season
Where can one find “Dolly Parton,” Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette on the same stage? Why the Betty Rydell Show of course! Betty has worked up a new show that pays tribute to the three lady singers who were so popular in the 60’s and 70’s. She even has a new stage outfit
that makes her look like Dolly. She sings three different medleys composed of the most popular songs of each of the three popular women country stars. Fans who love her red dress act need not worry. That is included in the shows. And of course, Betty has a one-person band, one instrument at a time. She plays banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, little piano, a horn and a melodica. She plays each equally well, the mark of a truly talented musician. Her husband, Ed, too has worked up a new routine with new jokes and songs alSee BETTY RYDELL pg. 6

Lindley Creek performs amazing Bluegrass and Gospel
Lindley Creek, the RGV Bluegrass & Folk Band of the Year will be performing for a limited number of shows at area RV resorts. This acoustic family band known for performing traditional bluegrass and gospel music, with soulful vocals, soothing harmonies, and intricate instrument breaks is back in the Rio Grande Valley for another season. When not in the Valley they perform throughout the Ozarks and other locations in the United States and Canada. For those who missed their Christmas performances, there are plenty of other shows planned this season to catch the performance by the Greer Family, comprised of Katie, Jase, John and Kathie Greer. At just age 17, Katie is the group’s lead singer and primary mandolin player, playing mandolin Octave and Mandolin Acoustic along with electric guitar. She is turning into a budding songwriter. She is inspired by the music of Allison Krause, Carrie Underwood, Tori Kelly and Mandisa. Jase Greer, now 20, started violin lessons at 4, experimented with dobro and has trained with Kyle Link of Link Union for a number years. He plays fiddle, chin cello, saxophone, electric guitar and performs vocals. He sings lead and harmonizes beautifully with his sister. He admires the music of Michael
Buble, Michael Cleveland and Andy Leftwich. John Rob Greer is the family bus driver, plays upright and electric bass and sings vocals. He is the spiritual rock for the family group and ministry. The family offers spiritual encouragement to others through music and by example. They often visit churches while on tour. Mom, Kathie Greer, begin singing in church as a child and moved to playing in a country band while in high school. She serves as the band’s manager and agent. She is also artistic director for the shows. She maintains a solid guitar rhythm during shows and keeps the family “glued together” as they travel. She and Ed have decided they are not going to book any more shows for the next season. They still plan to come to the Valley and Betty may participate in shows with other entertainers from Minnesota and the Midwestern states. The Texans are performers with a purpose
The Valley’s Favorite Gospel Group, The Texans, will perform six dates during this season’s South Texas tour of the Lone Star Jubilee. And as a special treat for all who attend, Hee Haw’s famous super star, LuLu Roman, will be the show’s featured guest star. The Texans were voted 2015 Gospel Group of the Year by Winter Texans who attended their shows last season, and they are two-time recipients of Branson’s Entertainer of the Year award. They will perform in The Lone Star Jubilee in the Valley Jan. 24-29, appearing at various churches. Sam Ray and the Texans are not only entertainers, they are missionaries who strive to spread the word of God through their deeds throughout the world. In the Bible, James 1:22 says, “be ye doers of the word, not hearers only.” The Texans (Sam Ray, his wife, Brenda Ray and son, Curtis) take that scripture to heart and dedicate a portion of their earnings and a lot of their time to doing mission work in a variety of places. In 2015, The Texans International Missions (TIM) worked with projects in a variety of locations around the world with funding they received through the freewill donations made during their Gospel shows. When they were not entertaining in
2015, they took part in a variety of mis- Gonzalez, McAllen, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m. if they cannot pay. Three water wells were built for missionaries serving in the Philippines. Six puppets were sent to be used in a children’s ministry. Two keyboards and a bass guitar went to a Philippine Bible College to train young ministers for praise and worship teams. A South African missionary received a sound system to be used to train 1800 children in a public school about the Bible. An Indian missionary’s computer was repaired so he could continue his work. Approximately 10 churches and children’s camps received sound and video systems they could not afford. From pg. 31 countries around the world them where we picked Jamaica and used a lot of fruits. But the real tricks of the trade are learning how to put things together and getting the product to stay on the costume. Using rubber cement for the base coat and spray glue for additional coats of product seems to work well. We have tried hair spray and spray starch to get the product to stay on the costume. But different products work better with different glues so it is not always easy to get everything to stay on. It takes a lot of know-how to get stuff to work together and a lot of creativity to get a really good-looking costume.” To get the other side of the story, the paper talked to Adriana Uhrbrock, a firsttime designer. “It’s a bit overwhelming to experiment to get just the right colors and products. It is sometimes difficult to find the colors wanted. Tangerine peels make a great gold color once they are dehydrated and powdered. But other colors are more difficult. Sometimes the product looks entirely different than you anticipated.” For example, Adriana tried dying some lemon pulp she had with beets, as someone recommended to get a pink color. But when it was completely dry, the product was a rust color instead of the pink she needed. Scratch that one! Getting enough of some colors was also a challenge. When green leafy vegetables such as kale are dried, there is very little product when it is ground. It would take a truckload to get enough to cover an entire dress. Some of the products have to be dried overnight to get the water out and others can be done in two to three hours. If they are left overnight they will almost disappear. It is hard to know which product will work best. All costumes are required to be at least 50 percent citrus since they are being made for the Texas Citrus Fiesta. All other agricultural products used must be grown in the Rio Grande Valley. How the products are used and how they are processed are up to the designers who make the costumes. To see the costumes these designers and others are making, make plans to attend the Texas Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Style Show on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Mission Community Center, located at 1420 E. Kika de la Garza Loop, Mission. The costumes must adhere to the theme of this year’s show, which is “Citrus, Cartoons & Comic Book Characters.” There will be three divisions of costumes: Primary, ages four to 12; Teen for ages 13-19; and Adult, for ages 20 and older. Tickets cost $5 per person and may be purchased in advance or at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Texas Citrus Fiesta office, located at 220 E. 9th Street, Mission. Editor’s note: Jim Brunson contributed to this article.

This year’s show promises to deliver lots of outdoor toys and will include a wide assortment of items for those who enjoy the RV lifestyle. There will towable vehicles like cars and trucks people may want to purchase to tow behind their motorhomes when traveling. Motorcycles and boats are also expected to be on display. One vendor will be bringing sheds for storage on RV lots, and trailers designed for pulling four-wheelers and motorcycles. A new vendor to the show this year will have play stations for outdoor music sounds. So many vendors will be displaying their products, it will take several hours to see everything there. Nowhere else in the Valley can you see so many RV and outdoor products in one location. There will also be a variety of delicious foods available to purchase, including hamburgers, funnel cakes, potato sizzlers and a variety of foods from the corn maize. Have a bite to eat and enjoy the show. The All Valley RV & Outdoor Show is one of the largest shows of its kind in the United States. It is put on by the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association, made up of 500 vendors of RVs, motorhomes,

Steve has been in Maggie’s Heartland Country Band for eight years and is well known for his vocals and his superb playing. Maggie has performed at the RFD TV Theater in Branson, MO. She and her band have opened for the Oak Ridge Boys and she has performed several times with The Riders in the Sky & the great lady of country, Leona Williams and Mollie B. She has recorded a duet with country great Doug Stone as well as opened up shows for many artists. To date she has recorded seven albums and two DVDs of her performances with plenty of toe-tapping and yodeling songs that will make you smile. It’ is the type of music that makes you want to hear more! Maggie Mae and the talented band; Heartland Country, travel and perform at theaters, dances, fairs, festivals and many other events throughout the states and are drawing crowds wherever they go. In 2011 Maggie’s album “Cooking Up Country” has won the Rural Roots Music Commissions pick for Contemporary Country CD of the Year Award Maggie Mae’s fan base keeps growing as folks come to attend her “Maggie Mae Barn Dance/Dinner Shows” which she holds on her farm in Oxford, WI. People travel in from across the country to enjoy the day with Maggie Mae and her band.
The setting is right up in the hay-mow of their 100 year old barn. It brings memories to many that attend and keep them returning. Be sure to experience a barn dance in your travel plans, especially the one on June 5, which many Winter Texans come for a reunion. Maggie and Roger also crop farm in Wisconsin. They love being connected with their rural roots and are still in awe of how their lives have changed since Maggie started to perform in 2002. Maggie Mae is also a proud military Mom. Her daughter Sgt. Karah Cox was in the Army 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Her daughter has served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in which she has received two Purple Hearts and has recovered well. Maggie is so proud and thankful for her daughter, and thankful for all of the other military personnel, and veterans, who have served this country. Her shows always pay tribute to the men and women whom have bravely sacrificed and served our country! Maggie and her husband, Roger Hilliard, owned and operated Maggie Mae’s Café in Oxford, Wis. for 14 years, which won “Restaurant Pick of the Month” award through the Discover Wisconsin Radio/TV show. Although they have sold the café May 2014, Maggie still continues to find time to go in and sing for folks. Crosby Stills Nash Show is Hot
By Kathy Olivarez As the rec hall at Llano Grande reverberated with the sounds of 1960’s rock and the songs of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the audience got into the music by singing along and applauding their favorites. Tribute group, CSNSongs, from New Jersey, took the audience back in time to Woodstock on Friday, Jan. 8 during a hot performance of the group, who got their start at the Woodstock Music Festival. One member of the audience, Marilyn Buck, had been at Woodstock and heard Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young perform. “I am so emotional right now,” Buck told the Winter Texan Times. “It brings back so many memories.” Buck was an art student in college at the time of the Woodstock festival. She and several of her friends went to the concert in a VW van painted with flower on it. “We were rebels back then,” Buck explained. Her father was an army officer and attending Woodstock was a way to rebel against his authority. “We were there four days and loved every minute of it!” The trio of singers doing the tribute took on the personalities of David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. Louis Pucci portrayed Crosby and was lead vocalist and played electric guitar. Pete Scherer, who portrayed Graham Nash, played acoustic guitar and sang. (He also took his shoes off on stage while performing, which Graham Nash often did.) Phil Bertolo plays guitar and sings, and also manages the group. Members of the band included Steve Magliaro on keyboard, Aaron Chesler on bass guitar, John Hawes on Drums and Mi-

SANTA MARIA She fought bulls at Santa Maria, in Mexico and in South America. As part of earning full matadora status, she had to fight a bull successfully in the Plaza. When that was completed, the senior matador performed a ceremony bestowing the title matadora on her by exchanging his small cape for her large cape. She then stepped over to face the judge in the Plaza to ask permission to continue the fight. She had to fight two bulls that day. But when it was over she received her confirmation as a full matadora, which Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring, said is the equivalent of a Ph.D. in bullfighting. Lupita Lopez is the only woman bullfighter ever confirmed at Plaza Mexico. (There is another full matadora who lives in Spain). Though she has not been in Santa Maria for three years, she is returning this year to the ring where she got her big break through a national news story. In the interim, she fought in Mexico, South America and in Spain last year. At Santa Maria she will perform Sunday, Jan. 24 on the same card as famed matador Cesar Casteneda, who is ranked as fourth among matadors in Mexico and South America. Lopez and Casteneda will face two bulls each. The gates at the Santa Maria open at 1 p.m. and Lupita will be available to greet the public and sign autographs along with Castaneda. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the Winter Tex-

From pg. 37 ers while he started a fire in the fireplace. That was the inspiration for the song that he wrote as they sat by the fire and enjoyed the flowers. On another occasion Graham ash was going on vacation in Hawaii when the friend taking him to the airport challenged his to write a song in the 15 minute it took to get to the airport. “Just a Song Before I Leave” was the result. Another time the group was leaving San Francisco for Los Angeles when they witnessed a riot. The song that resulted was “Something Happened Here.” Crosby encouraged the audience to join in the chorus of “Stop! What’s that sound…Everybody look what’s going on.” On a poignant note one song that became a hit was recorded only once and put on the
end of an album being produced. “Almost Cut My Hair” was written by Crosby three days after a girlfriend was killed in a car accident. It became his signature song. Other songs included “Cost of Freedom,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Southern Man” “Chicago,” “Southern Cross,” “49 Bye Byes” and “Long Time” to name a few. Anyone who loves the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would have enjoyed this show. Llano Grande will have three other big shows this season. George Burns & Friends will be presented on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. Pete Salzer is very believable as George Burns, while Lynn Roberts portrays Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny and Red Skelton. Willie & Company will be presented Friday, Mar. 11. Peggy Miller is a ventriloquist who makes the audience forget she is the voice of Willie.
