Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 29, No. 13 © 2015-2016 Mexico’s top matador to perform at Santa Maria

By Kathy Olivarez Mexico’s number one matador, Guillermo Ibarra, will perform in place of Matadora Lupita Lopez at the Santa Maria Bullring on Sunday, Jan. 24. Ibarra is the top ranked matador in Mexico, reports Fred Renk, owner of the bullring. He fought 70 bullfights in 2015 in Mexico and Spain. Lupita Lopez, known as the Mayan Princess, has fought at Santa Maria Bullring many times and was slated to fight on Sunday. However, she was injured last Sunday in Plaza Mexico and cannot come. She called Ibarra and asked him to replace her at See MATADOR pg. 41

Hee Haw star LuLu Roman joins Lone Star Jubilee The Texans, who were voted the Valley’s favorite Gospel Show in 2015, will be returning to the Rio Grande Valley Jan. 24-29 for another Lone Star Jubilee series of entertainment. Fans who attend this season’s Lone Star Jubilee are in for a special treat as Hee Haw super star LuLu Roman joins The Texans for their road tour in the RGV. LuLu Roman has enjoyed many successes in her life, but also more than her share of disappointments and hardships. Famous for her sidesplitting humor and jovial disposition, a lesser-known story lies behind those clear, radiant eyes, which have often been filled with tears of both pain and joy. People know LuLu as the most requested female cast member of the long running hit television series, “Hee Haw.” Many know her as the accomplished and celebrated songwriter, and as the singer who has been successfully making records for over 25 years. Few know that Lulu was born with a thyroid dysfunction in a home for unwed mothers and was soon placed in an orphanage. It was there that her weight problem furthered her pain, preventing her adoption and making her the center of teasing by the other children. It was also during this time that LuLu learned to use her sense of humor as a defense. That sense of humor later evolved into a highly successful career as an actress and comedienne with a lead role on “Hee Haw.” Success and wealth, however, proved poisonous to the actress who began her career in her early twenties. Drug addiction led LuLu on a downward spiral that nearly destroyed Hee Haw’s LuLu Roman her life and her career in 1971. Hee Haw super star LuLu Roman will perform with The Texans See JUBILEE pg. 3 at the Lone Star Jubilee Shows beginning Sunday.

Harlingen Performing Arts performs ‘Enchanted April’

By Kathy Olivarez If you enjoy live theater, the Harlingen Performing Arts Center, located across from the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium at 1209 Fair Park Blvd., has two live theater productions during Winter Texan season you’re sure to love. Lucy Hilliard invited the Winter Texan Times down to the dress performance of “Enchanted April” by Matthew Barber that opened Friday, Jan. 15-17 and will run again Jan. 22-24. Evening productions are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. For reservations, call (956) 412-7529. Hiliard explained the only person who gets paid to work there is the janitor. Everyone else – from those who run the box office to the actors, directors and costume designers – volunteers their time. Prior to Hurricane Dolly there was a small paid staff, but there was so much damage the theater was closed for an entire Enchanted April season for repairs. Now it has resumed proHarlingen Performing Arts Theater will perform the final shows of “Enchanted April” See ENCHANTED APRIL pg. 38 January 22-24. For reservations call (956) 412-7529.

From pg. 1 LuLu’s search for happiness and acceptance, which had almost led her to personal destruction, instead led her to God. It was her newfound faith in God that led her to begin using a talent that had been lying dormant for many years: her voice. In 1999, LuLu was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame. In 2002 Lulu’s 16th album, a collection of hits and favorites called “Lulu, Inspired” was nominated for a Dove award. In 2006, LuLu recorded the song “Orphan Girl” which is the title song of an “Americana” type-recording project, which features Gospel, Country and Rhythm & Blues. This almost biographical song has become her signature song and is enjoyed in concerts all over the United States. Her latest gospel project “Seven Times” has garnered an international hit song, “Do You Know How To Fly”, and is still being shared across the globe. It also features one of the last songs her precious friend Dottie Rambo wrote for her, “Move Upon Us.” LuLu has just completed a new project entitled “At Last.” The album features 12 of her favorite standards and classics, such as “I Will Always Love You,” “Summertime,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Til I Can Make It On My Own,” and the title song, “At Last.” LuLu’s dear friends Dolly Parton, T. Graham Brown, Linda Davis and Georgette Jones also joined her on the album. In addition to “Hee Haw” LuLu has also been a guest star on such television programs as “The Love Boat” and “Touched By An Angel.” She is also an accomplished author. Her most recent work is a cookbook “Kitchen Komforts.” Although she has been performing for over 40 years, she has no plans to rest or retire. LuLu continues to travel sharing her testimony, her humor and her music. The Texans with LuLu Roman can be seen Sunday, Jan. 24 at Christ Church of the Valley, 2900 Dr. Hugh Emerson Dr., Brownsville, 6 p.m.; Jan. 25, First Baptist Church, 402 Templeton, Combes, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.; Jan, 26, First United Methodist Church, 1101 Doherty, Mission, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.; Jan. 27, Fun N Sun Resort, 1400 Zillock Rd., San Benito, 7 p.m.; Jan. 28, First Baptist Church, 600 S. Men Fully in Accord

By Brittany Asbury No one is ever too old or too young to start singing barbershop. The Magic Valley Men of A-Chord chorus is a great example of a singing community coming together to entertain, and to have fun while doing so. The Magic Valley Men of A-Chord was created out of the many Winter Texans who were already a part of a barbershop quartet or chorus in their home states and wanted to keep singing while away from home. It’s a group for all ages. Don Reinhardt and Ken Farley are the oldest members of the Men of A-Chord at 89, while Rob is the youngest at 48, but everyone has the same delight in singing barbershop style harmony. Dennis Bush, a native Texan who has been with the Men of A-Chord for 16 years, explained how he’s seen the chorus grow. “A lot of the Winter Texans are part of the National Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. When they came to Texas, they just naturally looked around for other people who sang, and that was how this group all started.” The Magic Valley Men of A-Chord has been a full chorus for about 25 years, and Bob Lemkuil has been both a singer in the chorus and its director for the last 20 years. He is also an active part of the Senior Ambassadors. He especially wanted to let everyone know that the Men of A-Chord will be teaming up with the Senior Ambassadors, the RGV band, and the Magic Valley Chorus (Sweet Adelines) in a combined concert. “Music for All Ages” will be held on March 4, at Center Church (formerly Trinity Worship Center), located at 4801 N. Cage Blvd. in Pharr. To get a preview of the Men of A-Chord, attend their show on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m., at Mission Bell RV Resort, in Mission. For more opportunities to hear this amazingly entertaining group perform, look for their full performance schedule in this issue of the Winter Texan Times. The Men of A-Chord’s official purpose

is to preserve barbershop singing and the music that goes with it, and it’s a real treat to listen to them rousing up the blood with “The Chordbuster March,” or giving fresh life to old favorites like the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “God Bless America,” Still of the Nite,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “King of the Road,” and “Everybody Loves a Lover.” The Men of A-Chord are also the only group that takes their key from a single, little round pitch pipe, so they never need a piano or tuning fork – or even an excuse – to start singing. To top it off, it really only takes four people – a quartet – to have true barbershop music. One outstanding quartet of the Men of A-Chord is Texas Gold, who sang a wonderful “Java Jive” at a recent rehearsal. Mike Owen is the newest member of Texas Gold, and he has been barbershopping for 18 years. He said with a smile that he was the 47th person out of the 46 people asked to join the quartet. He was part of a quartet called the “Cody Choraliers” in his home city of Leavenworth, Kansas, sang with the Kansas City Chorus, and was also a part of the “Escape!” quartet for fourteen years. When Owen retired and decided to move to Texas, he chose McAllen because the area was familiar and the Men of A-Chord were based there. He explained that while the Men of A-Chord wasn’t a chartered chapter, a lot of the members, including himself, were a part of the BarSee MEN OF A-CHORD pg. 6

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com Men of A-Chord Schedule for 2016 MEN OF A-CHORD From pg. 4 bershop Harmony Society, an international group headquartered out of Nashville. Margo Campsey, who met Owen through barbershop singing and has been his partner for 15 years, helped explain barbershop singing. A quartet is made up of the tenor, the lead, the bass, and the baritone whose singing creates “an overtone, which is a blend of the four notes,” and a chorus is made up of any number of these four singing types. Tenors “mostly sing in their falsetto voice, very high; what is called a ‘head voice,’” and there are two very strong tenors in the Men of A-Chord. Owen added that the tenor brings in the “sparkle, or if you will, the zing” to the chord, the lead always sings the melody of the song, while the bass is the root of the chord, and sets the tempo. Owen sings the baritone part, which he describes as “singing all the leftover notes,” and “filling in the holes of the melody.” When these four parts come together and sing, they create a new chord in perfect harmony that is only heard in barbershop singing. If a man likes to sing, and isn’t afraid to sing in public, just come and visit at their rehearsal. As one member of the group said, “if you sing a bad note, they don’t jump on you,” and they’re all easy-going guys who like to ham it up. They meet every Tuesday at 2 p.m., at the St. Mark Methodist Church on the corner of 2nd and Pecan, in McAllen.

Goldwing Express returns for another season

Once again the little Irish comedian with the tree Native American sons will be bring their mix of Southern Gospel, comedy, bluegrass and country favorites back to the Valley. Since 2012 when they first arrived, they have been a favorite with Valley Winter Texans. And judging from their heavy schedule, they still are! Bob Baldridge and sons, Paul, Steven and Shawn, who are half Creek Indian, will put on a show that is high-energy. It is a mixture of hard driving acoustics and heart-felt melodies. Bob plays mandolin, sings lead and does much of the comedy. Paul sings high tenor and plays guitar and plays most of the traditional bluegrass. Steven sings baritone and plays banjo and favors gospel music. Shawn play upright fiddle and sings a wide range of notes. Listen for the train-whistle he does with his mouth only when they do their signature song. WINTER TEXAN TIMES

George Burns & Friends to perform

Remember the days when the comedy greats were first heard on the radio and later appeared on TV? Winter Texans can once again enjoy the Golden Age of Comedy right here in the Rio Grande Valley. George Burns and Friends will be appearing at Llano Grande Lake Park Resort on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Pete Salzer does an amazing tribute to George Burns. When he appeared at Victoria Palms in 2011, there was a collective “gasp” as he walked on stage. He was the very image of George Burns. And when he spoke, members of the audience thought they were listening to George Burns himself! Salzer captures the look, voice and style of this loveable actor and comedian. He has paid tribute to George Burns at the Tropicana Showroom in Atlantic City, on the stage of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and for a variety of groups and organizations. The Friends section of the show stars Lyn Roberts as Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny and Red Skelton. Lynn won the prestigious Bea Fogelman Reel Award for Lifetime achievement for his impersonation of Bob Hope at the International Celebrity Impersonators Convention at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. As “George Burns” reminisces about his comedian friends, Lynn gives his impressions of Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny and Red Skelton. The audi-

ence will believe these beloved comedians are back on stage in front of them and spend the evening laughing and enjoying the memories. Winter Texans will not want to miss this memorable evening of fun and laughter, which is happening at Llano Grande Lake Park Resort, 2214 East West Blvd (Highway 83 then south on Mile 2 West to the gate) in Mercedes. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the Llano Grande activities office. To order and pay by phone call (956) 565-2228. For more information contact Robert Ferguson at (574) 361-2947.

Ace’s Barbecue is Good Eatin’! For some down home and downright delicious Texas barbecue try Ace’s Barbecue, in Mission. Owner Jose Aguilar has been in business for four years and his food is so good, people are requesting to open franchises in other locations. Aguilar’s food is prepared fresh in the store – from the potato salad and salad greens and coleslaw, to meats and catfish and shrimp. Sides such as rice, beans (charro style), and potato salad are prepared in the restaurant using family recipes. Aguilar uses choice meats or a higher grade when preparing his foods. His briskets and pork are smoked for 14 hours in a Southern Fried Smoker to get that wonderful flavor. The fish and shrimp are fresh and cooked to perfection. The newest item on his menu added just last week is chicken wings. He serves them with barbecue sauce, buffalo sauce and with lemon seasoning. They are first smoked and then flash fried for crispness. Very good! To test this location I took my husband who would rather eat barbecue than anything else and my grandson, “Hollow Leg.” For his entre, “Hollow Leg” chose “The Boss,” a combination brisket and sausage sandwich served with an abundance of French fries. As an appetizer he chose the

chicken wings. The Buffalo wings and “The Boss” disappeared quickly into the growing 17-year-old’s hollow leg and were pronounced delicious. My husband loves brisket and chose a platter with rice and potato salad. It too, disappeared quickly. I chose a “Monster Potato” filled with barbecued brisket. Half of it came home with me for lunch. Aguilar also presented us with a catfish plate, which was very tender and a sample of his shrimp. The catfish were just the way I like them, moist and tender, cooked to perfection. The shrimp were fresh and served with a panko breading. Also good. Since we were all stuffed, that plate was delivered to another grandson who thought it was a great surprise. Our last sample was a serving of peach cobbler, which Aguilar credits with the large number of customers on Mondays. Cobbler is complimentary on Mondays. It too, was delicious! Barbecue lovers will want to sample this feast, perhaps on a Friday evening when musical entertainment is provided. During Winter Texan season last year, Dale & Gale played. Currently, a musician who plays ambient jazz is entertaining. Regardless of when you go, you’ve gotta try Aces Barbecue, located at 2536 E. Griffin Parkway in Mission.

Texas Citrus Fiesta Coronation is Jan. 28

King Citrus and Queen Citrianna extend a royal invitation to Winter Texans to attend the Texas Citrus Fiesta’s Royal Coronation to begin precisely at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 28 at the Neuhaus Gym on the campus of Mission High School, 1802 Cleo Dawson Drive. This annual coronation has all the pageantry of a royal celebration as heralds sound their trumpets to announce the arrival of the new King Citrus. This will be someone who has made significant contributions to the Texas citrus industry and whose identity has been kept a secret until the time of his announcement at this royal ceremony. Once the new King Citrus is announced the retiring king will crown the new king and pass on the royal scepter. King Citrus will then take the stage to await the arrival of Queen Citrianna LVXXIX. Queen Citrianna’s Royal Court will be seated on stage with the king and queen as will the Tangerine Court, consisting of six-year-old Princess Anna and her court of six-year-olds. Some 23 beautiful duchesses from the provinces of the Rio Grande Valley Citrus Kingdom will be dressed in beautiful ball gowns in the color of the product they represent. The Duchess of Bluebonnet will wear blue while the Duchess of Poinsettia will wear red, creating a rainbow of colors

among the girl’s exquisite ball gowns. The duchesses will be accompanied by their six-year-old boy pages dressed in their finest apparel. The Royal Crown Bearer and the Royal Trainbearers who assist the queen are also six-years-olds and are sometimes known to bring chuckles and laughter to the audience with their antics as their “patiently” remain seated on stage during the evening’s grandiose ceremony. Tickets for the event are $10 for reserved seating and $5 for general admission. To purchase tickets, stop by the Citrus Fiesta office, located at 220 E. 9th Street, Mission. Tickets may also be available at the door. Call the Texas Citrus Fiesta office at (956) 585-9724 for more information.

Entertainers’ Showcase introduces great new talent By Kathy Olivarez a voice and a presentation somewhat like who started out with the theme of the Lone progressed.

The Entertainers’ Showcase held in Harlingen Wednesday, Jan. 13, offered excellent new choices for entertainment, as well as some fairly new entertainers auditioning for additional jobs performing in the RGV RV resorts. There was not a bad group in the bunch, but some stood out more than others. There were fewer Branson performers than there were in the past but taking their place was a lot of new groups from all across the Midwest. The Winter Texans Times ran a poll asking activity directors in attendance who they thought were the best of those who performed and who they intended to hire. The single most popular name that came up was Williamson Branch, consisting of the Murphy family from Tennessee. The family was comprised of Mom and Dad, two older daughters, and a six-yearold girl who stole the show. She had a good voice and knew the words and performed them with spunk! She captured the audience’s attention when she sang, “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man,” while being accompanied by the family playing two guitars, a fiddle and a mandolin. When the family was finished, activity directors got up and ran to get in line in the booking room. Helen Russell, playing keyboard and guitar, playing honkytonk music also got a lot of votes early in the morning. With

Dolly Parton, she received a good audience response. When it was over activity directors were running to book her as well. Daddy D Three of Wisconsin was very popular with the rock n roll crowd with songs like “Earth Angel” and “Donna.” Many activity directors indicated they were hiring this new band. Others liked Tavie’s Rock & Roll Show that was full of jokes and songs from the early era of rock. Mario Rosales of Branson was popular. New last year, several activity directors had heard him and a couple told me they would cast their vote for him as one of the best. They were basing their comment on previous experiences because he had not yet performed. Mario does Conway Twitty, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, George Strait and also sings a bit of Gospel. The same comment was made about Adam Pope and Rebel Roots, from Nashville. The band got good audience response from activity directors when they performed “Walk the Line,” and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” “The Big Show” with Clayton Watson received a lot of audience response. Clayton said he could do anything from Liberace to George Strait. He played “Last Date,” “Tennessee Waltz,” “Chariots of Fire,” and “How Great Thou Art.” The activity directors loved him. Split Image, a couple of identical twins

Ranger, had a presentation that was different enough several activity directors were planning to book them. Johnny Ray Gomez, who filled the booking room as the last performer to entertain at last year’s showcase was back again this year. He plays accordion, sings and tells lots of jokes about his 60 years in the music field. The Richard Lynch Band from Ohio is back and ready to perform. They were also popular with the audience when singing songs like “She’s Got Me Drinkin’ Again.” Of those performers who have been in the Valley before, Bill Chrastil seemed to be a popular choice among activity directors who applauded his performance. Southern Anthem, the Pausewing Family, has returned bigger and better than ever. Mikaela has an excellent voice that has matured and she was the lead singer for many of their songs. The family sang great harmony and Logan, now ten, cut a mean rug with his fiddle. This is one of those families the Rio Grande Valley is getting to watch grow up as they perform and they get better and better each year. They do a variety of music – from “Seven Bridges Road,” in great harmony – to “Why Not Me?’ “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,’ and of course Logan’s version of the “Orange Blossom Special.” If you haven’t heard them in awhile, you must see them now and how this group has

27

Lindley Creek, the Greer Family, another outstanding group who has performed in the RGV before, was also very popular with activity directors. They do a variety of music. Jason Whorlow, “The Piano Man,” returning for another season, does Jerry Lee Lewis, Louis Armstrong and many others in his one-man show. He too was very popular with activity directors. Ralph Kuster was there with his deep tenor voice. Ralph does a number of holiday shows. His Christmas shows were canceled due to problems getting his visa to enter the country from Canada but he is here and ready to perform. Jenny Casey from Nashville is back and ready to do a full slate of shows. She does a tribute to Dolly Parton and also sings many of her original songs like the one she wrote about her grandmother’s flour sack dresses as a tribute to her. John Sager, three-time “Male Vocalist of the year” in the Valley Star Awards is back with his signature song, “Unchained Melody” and others that the ladies love to hear. Goldwing was there with their signature “Long Black Train” and other country songs with papa telling the jokes as well. They are a very popular group.

National Bullriders Competition coming Jan. 30-31

Winter Texans, it is time to grab a cowboy hat and a pair of boots and look like a real Texan as KTEX 100.3 presents the “The Hottest 8 Seconds of 2016” in Mercedes. It’s back and it’s bigger and better than ever! The National Professional Bull Riders (NPBR) bring some of the nation’s top bull riders to town for a two-day event on Jan. 30-31 at the RGV Livestock Show Complex, Mercedes. Thirty-five top cowboys will compete for an average of $14,000 in money and prizes. This includes a chance to win one of three $600 Monsoon Silver Champion Trophy Buckles and a sack full of money. The NPBR not only attracts bull riders from Texas and the surrounding states but also from Mexico, Brazil and Australia. The four-footed beasts that cowboys will be trying to score points on will be top bucking bulls that are the up and coming stars of professional bull riding. Many of the bulls that have performed in the Mercedes NPBR in the past have been featured bucking bulls on television. This is a chance to be up close and personal with the bulls and the bull riders. Viewers will experience the thrills and spills of each one and be able to cheer on their favorite contestant. Returning this year will be the South

Texas Bull Fight Challenge. This will be the first stop on the South Texas Bull Fight Challenge Tour. Five top bullfighters will be competing against each other not only for money in their pockets but also for a chance to perform in Las Vegas. In 2016, the South Texas Freestyle Bull Fight Challenge will become a sanctioned event for Bullfighters Only. Founded in 2015, Bullfighters Only is a platform created to revolutionize the sport of American Bullfighting. There is now a seven-day event being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the NFR with a World Champion to be crowned at the end of seven days. Several of this year’s contestants have competed at NPBR events. Protection and Freestyle bull fighting competition is making bull riding even more exciting for the fans and athletes alike. In a freestyle bullfight, the bullfighter goes one-on-one against a Mexican Fighting Bull for 70 seconds. The bullfighter is judged on his willingness to expose himself to risk and on his aggressiveness. Several World Champion Bull Fighters are gearing up for this challenge. WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com April” came over to say hello. Trained in ENCHANTED APRIL dance and theater arts in Chicago, she startFrom pg. 1 ductions on an all-volunteer basis. Some of the actors and actresses have had professional theater training. Others have never been on stage before. The directors teach them basics of stage lingo and stage presence. A play such as “Enchanted April” takes about six weeks to get ready. Once the cast is set there are three rehearsals a week. If there are dance steps involved in any of the scenes Lori Rodgers Dance Studio works with the cast on weekends to teach the dance routines. If the production coming up is a musical like Rodgers and Hammersteins’ “Oklahoma,” that will be presented February 26-28 and March 3-6, it takes about eight weeks to get ready. It not only involves dancing and singing but an orchestra must be hired to play the music. As the Winter Texan Times spoke with Hilliard in her office, there were a group of about 20 people seated in chairs in the lobby with a music teacher who was teaching them to sing the songs from the music while the cast of “Enchanted April” was backstage getting ready for their dress rehearsal. The tour continued to the auditorium where there was an entire row of seats reserved for those who are handicapped and cannot climb stairs. The rows are long with comfortable seats and there is seating capacity for 274 people. Carol Kent, director of “Enchanted

ed acting at age 15 and has enjoyed participating in theater arts for the last 43 years. She performed there in a lot of “black box” theater presentations. One of her performances was in Tennessee Williams’ “Suddenly Last Summer,” while another was Noel Coward’s “Hayfever.” When her parents retired they moved to the Valley, and after her father died she moved here to be with her mother. She lives in Country Sunshine and enjoys it much better than Chicago’s cold winters. For the last three years she has been involved with Harlingen Performing Arts Theater (HPAT). “Enchanted April” is the story of two London housewives who are confused about their place in the war at the end of World War I. Women went to work while the men fought the war, but when the men came home they were supposed to return to being subservient housewives. At the same time there was a Sufferage Movement going on to give women the right to vote. The two women rent a castle in sunny Italy in April when the weather is dreary back home. They invite two other very different women along to help share expenses and they all learn a bit about themselves. Characters are Lotty Wilson played by Sharon Hearn, Rose Arnott, Jenny Remington; Frederick Arnott, Brian R. Svendsen; Caroline Bramble, Veronica Avila; Mrs. Graves, Rand Lappin; Antony Wilding, See ENCHANTED APRIL pg. 39

From pg. 1 Jorge De la Rosa and Costanza, Kathy Eunice. Lotty, who is the leading role as a starry-eyed housewife dreaming of a life less dreary than she was living, carried the show. Although a definite stuffed shirt in the beginning of the play, her husband, Frederick, definitely livened up when he came to visit her in Italy. And Mrs. Graves was the perfect demanding old English woman and quite annoying as she was supposed to be. The costumes were delightful and correct to the era, thanks to the talents of Mary Ricciardi, who has been designing costumes for HPAT productions for over 30 years. In all, it was a delightful production. Musicals tend to cost more to produce and tickets are a bit higher, thus “Oklahoma” ticket prices are $20. Hilliard explains

at least two a year. They have done “The Sound of Music” and “Fiddler on the Roof” in the last couple years. In spite of the additional cost, musicals tend to sell out quickly. P.J. the director for “Oklahoma,” said it is a great family musical, and besides, “Who could go wrong with a Rodgers and Hammerstein production?” Live theater is a wonderful experience and we encourage our readers to go out and support this tiny troupe of actors and actresses. And be sure to call early to reserve your tickets for “Oklahoma.” Call (956) 412-7529 and leave a message about the day of the performance desired and how many tickets you need. If tickets are not available, there will be a call back. Otherwise reservations are set. Pay at the door upon arrival one hour before the production starts.

Renk said Lopez’s Winter Texan fans, who were the ones to name her “the Mayan Princess,” will be disappointed she is unable to come, but will be in for a great performance with the number one ranked matador in Mexico filling the card for her. He said Lopez triumphed in the Plaza Mexico (the largest bullring in the world) on Sunday over five other matadors. She was the only one who got an ear or any other accolade. During her last fight, she went in for the kill and stabbed the bull and killed him. But he did not go down without a fight. He picked her up and tossed her on the ground, breaking her arm and injuring her hip as he fell. She is unable to fight this week with those injuries. After her injury she received the bull’s ear for her performance. Then the Mayan Princess was carried around the ring

pg. 1 because she could not walk after being tossed by the bull, as the fans cheered her performance. In spite of her injuries she waved the bull’s ear high in the air with her good arm, causing her fans to go wild. Ibarra will be challenged by Matador Cesar Casteñeda, who is currently the fourth-ranked bullfighter in Mexico. This will be a rare opportunity to see Mexico’s top ranked matador and the fourth-ranked matador in competition at Santa Maria Bullring. Tickets are available at the Winter Texan Times, located at 1217 N. Conway Ave. in Mission, and at Border Tire, located at Business 83 and Mayberry Road in Mission (956-585-8473). Or for directions and reservations call the bullring at 956-481-3300, then pay upon arrival. The gates open at 1 p.m. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp. Great food and beverage are available, and the restrooms are immaculate.
