Entertainer of the Year Nominees

Schlitterbahn’s WinterFest music festival is Jan. 30

Many of our Winter Texan readers enjoy the shows and dances hosted by the mobile home and RV parks and resorts where their favorite bands and entertainers perform. Each year the Valley Star Awards, hosted by Robert Ferguson and the Winter Texan Times, presents awards to the Rio Grande Valley’s top Winter Texan entertainers – or as we call them, “Wintertainers™.” This year’s Valley Star Awards Show will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 1-4 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort. So now it’s time for you to vote for your favorite entertainers – and Entertainer of the Year for 2019. There are some new names on this year’s list of nominees for the Valley Star See VALLEY STAR pg. 15

Star matadors return to Santa Maria Abba Fab

Winter Texans know a good deal. That’s one of the main reasons they return to the Rio Grande Valley every year. They also love the weather and the entertainment. So, what better event than WinterFest at Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island. This year’s WinterFest Music Festival will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Schlitterbahn-South Padre Island. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate, which includes not only the fabulous entertainment lineup, but also a delicious meal at the Shrimp Haus Restaurant. Dubbed Winter Texan “Spring Break,” the music festival includes all day music, dancing, raffles and other vendors plus a fish and shrimp basket with hush puppies and cole slaw. The annual tradition brings in close to 1,000 people each year on South Padre Island and many stay at the Schlitterbahn Beach Resort and make a weekend See WINTERFEST pg. 4

Swing Street Big Band creates moments to remember

After matador Leal Montalvo turned a close call into a stunning victory during the Jan. 12 bloodless bullfight at Santa Maria Bullring, the matadors of Ole Entertainment have another world-class bullfight set for this Saturday, Jan. 26. All of the participants are stars in the See MATADOR pg. 23

Party on the Boulevard planned Feb. 2

There’s a new party coming to town. Party on the Boulevard, to be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the RGV Livestock Show Grounds in Mercedes is more and more looking like the party of the season. The event is hosted by Winter Texan Home Sales and sponsored by the Winter Texan Times and other area businesses. POTB planner Cheryl Palacios says this will be a huge festival featuring three stages – two of them featuring some of the See PARTY pg. 27

It didn’t really matter what song the Swing Street Big Band performed, the sound was incredible, and each piece was performed to perfection. As the name of the band suggests, they performed music from the ‘big band” era, but they did so much more, playing an extremely wide selection from several decades. “Blueberry Hill,” “In the Mood,” “Moments to Remember” or “Celebration.” were just a morsel of what they delectable sounds could conjure. Whatever tune or style – Latin dances, waltzes, tangos, merengues – either Silvia and Bill Robinson, Vernon and Kathleen Carlson or Randy and Diane VanNorstrand would be in their element on the dance floor, dressed to the nines with glitter and class, at Fun N Sun RV Prom Night in San Benito with the Swing Street Band. The couple, who met through ballroom dancing events, were amazingly graceful on the hardwood floor, gliding, twirling and dipping in such perfect harmony that even Fred Astaire would approve. It was hard not to take notice of them dancing See SWING STREET pg. 4

Dale & Gayle bring music, entertainment to RV parks

There’s something comforting about sitting and talking with Dale and Gayle Eisenhauer, known as Dale & Gayle on the entertainment circuit. Maybe it’s the friendliness they exude. That may come from teaching children for 30 years. It could also partly be from Dale’s role as a pastor. Now in their ninth year entertaining in the Valley, Dale says they re-invent their shows every season to bring something new to their audiences. The two are from the little town of Newkirk in northern Oklahoma. They are on their 10th year as full-time entertainers, traveling and spreading their love of music to everyone they meet. Since their retirement, they have visited and entertained in 38 states and performed nearly 1,000 shows. Dale has played guitar and sung with a country dance band since 1970 in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. He has performed with many country legends such as Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Helen Cornelius, Barbara Fairchild, Cal Smith, David Frizzell, Johnny Lee, and many more. “Each of these wonderful legends was a special moment for me as I looked up and saw ‘me’ on stage playing music with them. I never dreamed I would ever be so fortunate,” he said. “It was a dream come true to sing and play with some of my alltime country music heroes.” One of Dale’s biggest thrills in his music career was to travel to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with his daughter Kathy and stand in the “magic circle” on stage and perform several songs during an event there. “It truly is like they say, a magical feeling to stand where so many greats have stood and hear your voice in the mother church of country music.” he said. Gayle was a trained pianist, taking many lessons in her childhood years. She only played and sang in church and never dreamed that someday she would be a full time entertainer, traveling the country with her husband. Dale & Gayle do not play or sing to track music. They prefer to play everything live and spontaneous. Dale plays acoustic guitar and sings; Gayle plays a split keyboard and is the bass player with her left hand, and piano player with her

right, plus she sings. They like playing live so that even in the middle of a song, they can stop and interact with the audience, tell a joke that pops into Dale’s head or comment on something that just happened in the audience. One of the most popular parts of their show has been a comedy skit with Ms. Crabapple. The skit is called “Let Me Speak To The Manager” and is a hilarious situation in which Ms. Crabapple calls the park manager and is always complaining about common problems that all parks face, except she really knows how to “explain” it to the manager. Many people come to Dale & Gayle shows just to see Ms. Crabapple. “We enjoy what we do and are blessed to have been here for so many years,” Gayle said. “We love what we do together.” Following is Dale and Gayle’s upcoming schedule. You can also find Dale & Gayle on most Monday nights from 5-8 p.m. playing at Ace’s BBQ in Mission, Thursday nights at Ace’s BBQ in Weslaco from 4:30-7:30 p.m, and Tuesday night at Brick Fire Pizza in Mission from 4:307:30 p.m. Dale & Gayle Show Schedule Jan 27: Big Valley Park, Donna, Country Show 7-9 p.m. Jan 30: Country Side Park, Donna, Country Show 7-9 p.m. Feb 14:Alamo Paradise Acres, Alamo, Valentine’s Dance 7-9:30 p.m. Feb 22: Circle T Park, Mission, Country Show, 7-9 p.m. TBA: Cottonwood Park, Mission, Country Show, 7-9 p.m. TBA: Leisure World Park, Weslaco, Dance 7-10 p.m.

From pg. 1 on air, showing their passion for ballroom dancing. “We started dancing together in 1962,” said Randy VanNorstrand, who also spent time as a dance instructor. He and Diane have danced in some of the most famous and elegant ballrooms across the country including the Ballroom on the Roof in Indianapolis and the Willowbrook Ballroom in Willow Springs, Ill. “We love to dance,” said Randy, who along with his wife are from Oklahoma City. “We’ve been fortunate to dance in the mecca of ballrooms.” Vernon and Kathleen Carlson aka “The Texas Twosome” according to a business-style card they hand out, like the other two couples, are serious dancers. They all can talk about the floor makeup, different styles of dancing from American Standard to Argentinian and just about any dance. At one time, Kathleen Carlson was a competitive dancer and her biggest moment came when she participated in a Fred Astaire dance competition. “It was fantasy land,” Kathleen said. “It was awesome.” They said they love director Bill Comeau and his Swing Street Band and will regularly follow the band for a night on the dance floor. Swing Street Big Band is an 18-piece show/dance orchestra playing throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The band includes many band directors – some who currently teach in the Rio Grande Valley and some who are retired band directors from the Midwest who are now Winter Texans. Influences for the band include Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Les Elgart, Harry James, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Henry Mancini, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, The Beatles, Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago. On Saturday, the band performed three sets and nearly 40 tunes. Couples danced throughout the night and in the back,

Also performing are some of South Texas’ finest including Jeff Gordon, Leslie Blasing, Lobo del Mar, Diego, Tavie’s Rock-nRoll Show and Jason “The Piano Man” Whorlow. there was a group learning to line dance to the wide variety of songs. Silvia and Bill Robinson have been married for 14 years and are huge fans of Fred Astaire style of dances. Silvia is from McAllen and Bill is from Chicago. They said they will follow the Swing Street Band all over the Valley. “They are just very danceable,” Silvia said. “And they’re always adding new songs.” One of the newer songs added to the list was “Old Time Rock ‘n Roll.” “I haven’t seen this one on their program before – definitely not what would call big band song,” Bill joked. “It doesn’t matter,” Silvia said. “They’ll make it sound great anyway.”

on the ballot and tell us which courses are your favorites in the Rio Grande Valley. And if there are some courses you haven’t played, go give them a try. Who knows, you may discover a new “favorite” to add to your list. Upper Valley Area Courses Palm View Golf Course Ever since Carlos Espinosa, director of golf for the City of McAllen, realized numbers were falling among Winter Texans and he studied the trend a little closer, things turned around, rounds played started rising again and the course has been battling with Los Lagos in Edinburg and Tierra del Sol in Pharr for Favorite Upper Valley Golf Course. Espinosa didn’t go deep into what he did differently – and it’s hard to tell since the course is beautiful and prepared all the time. But, just like a golf course needs some TLC, Espinosa figured the same could be said for his Winter Texans folk. So, Espinosa visited the parks and talked with the communities. “I got to know the customer better and identify what they wanted and implemented a program that would benefit them and us.” Espinosa then describes the change as “unparalleled and I am as grateful as I could be to them.” Palm View is a par-72 course with a mid-range length of 5,779 yards from the

middle tees but turns into a lengthy and challenging 6,771 yards from the back tees. While it has some fairly wide-open holes, it also has holes that will challenge how much you are willing to “go for it” for a better approach. Palm View Golf Course is located at 2701 S Ware Rd., McAllen. Phone 956681-3444. Tierra Del Sol Golf Course Build it and they will come. That mantra doesn’t always hold true. Clean it up, invest in it and care and they will come – an offshoot of the original statement, however, has worked wonders for Tierra Del Sol, another perennial power in the Favorite Golf Course competition. Tierra Del Sol was floundering. Even with a Winter Texan park on the driveway that led to the front doors of the course’s clubhouse, the municipal course was not connecting with even it’s closest golfers. Now, people from across the Valley have said over and over: Have you been to Tierra Del Sol lately? The course did a total makeover, completing cart paths that randomly ended, filling in the bald and dead spots so grass covered tee to green and fixing draining so random lakes wouldn’t appear the same way as cart paths would disappear. You can tell right from hole No. 1 that you’re on. Now a long approach shot has

Bands, Floats Highlight Parade of Oranges Saturday

The Texas Citrus Fiesta – and seemingly half the residents of Mission – are busily preparing for the annual Parade of Oranges on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. Tito Santana, a hometown boy who made it to the top of the wrestling world, will serve as parade marshal. Parade Chairman Bill Filut said last week 110 entries were already registered to participate in this year’s parade and more were expected before the deadline. Along with Tito as grand marshal, delegates from Sister Cities in Mexico and local political officials will be at the head of the parade.

“Because of the popularity of the 2019 theme, ‘Texas Citrus Fiesta Celebrates Hollywood Movies,’ there are more floats than ever this year,” said Filut. “Almost half the entries are floats of one type or another.” Filut also said there would be 24 duchesses participating in the parade. Marching bands from the Mission, La Joya and Sharyland school districts will participate along with ROTC units. The Marine Military Academy will have their drill team present. Of course, one of the most popular units will the Cavalry of Christ riders

represented by Father Roy Snipes, priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and other priests. Filut said State Representative Bobby Guerra would be riding with them this year to represent this important part of the Valley’s history. The Cavalry of Christ was a group of Oblate priests who came from France in the 1800s to serve people on the ranches scattered up and down the Rio Grande between Brownville and Roma. They performed weddings, baptisms and funerals. Look for the Shriners along the pa-

rade route working as clowns with their classic cars or motorcycles in the parade. Sample the famous Texas Citrus Fiesta barbecue sandwiches, a tradition for local residents. These will be sold along the parade route prior to the parade as people stake out their viewing locations early. The parade will begin at 3 p.m. and move south along Conway Ave. from FM 495 to Fourth Street to disband. Make plans to join Winter Texans from all over the Rio Grande Valley and local residents who make it a tradition to come out and see this excellent parade.

Texas Citrus Fiesta Fun Fair is Saturday

What can be more fun that the Texas Citrus Fiesta Fun Fair? The Fiesta Fun Fair is always held on the same day as the Parade of Oranges, Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The fair will be held in the newly renovated La Placita Park, located across from H-E-B on Conway at 9th Street (Business 83). Admission is free. Winter Texans will especially enjoy the folkloric dancers from Mission Parks & Recreation, performing at 11:30 a.m., well before the 3 p.m. parade start time. They will be followed by several local bands performing country music and a variety of other styles. Immediately following the parade, the popular group, Hot Rodz will perform from 4 to 5 p.m. They will be followed by Texas Legend playing country and a variety of other genres. A group with a similar name and similar blend of music styles, Legendzz Band, will then take the stage from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you’re into cumbia music, El Grupo Itza has your number, performing at 7:30. There’s a rap group that likely won’t appeal to our winter visitors, but

Bumble Bee will have a small car show. Paparazzi will have jewelry, headbands sunglasses and other items for sale. Light Boys will make name rings. Local artisans will be offering their arts and crafts. New this year are vendors selling candy from Spain and Mexico. Paletas

come back at 9 p.m. to hear South Gate perform some real country. Of course, the Fun Fair always has some great food vendors; look for turkey legs, onion blossoms, tacos, and brisket sandwiches, kettle corn, spiros (potatoes on a stick), corn on the cob, burgers, tamales and more. Several new exhibitors will be on hand at the Fun Fair this year. One new exhibitor will have oyster shells with pearls in them. The patron digs for an oyster shell and opens it to see what kind of pearl is inside. The vendor has jewelry settings and can make the pearl into a ring or a necklace. Another new vendor is Cool Cat Caricatures, where a picture can be drawn on a pillow.

Product Costume Style Show carries on Fiesta tradition

Costumes for the 2019 “Texas Citrus Fiesta Celebrates Hollywood Movies” Product Costume Show seemed better than ever, perhaps because the theme allowed designers to be more creative, picking the movie characters they wanted to represent. Characters ranged from Disney favorites like Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan to classical movies like the “Wizard of Oz” and Ben Hur. The Texas Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Show is not your ordinary style show. The costumes designed for this uniquely American folk art competition must be decorated using only agricultural products grown in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Over the years, the costume designers have become more and more creative about how to prepare a variety of local ag products – including citrus, of course – to create a palette of colors for their creative whims. Burnt citrus peel, purple onion skins, white onion skin, mesquite sawdust and dehydrated citrus leaves are just a few of the materials these creative designers use to achieve their almost magical transformation of raw materials into elaborate costumes for their models to showcase during the competition. The designers are judged on use of

villea petals, orange seeds, acorns, and other products were used to decorate the costume. Her two-tone shoes are made of lime leaves and orange peel. Princess Tiana carried her Frog Prince that was covered in bougainvillea leaves, white onions and black papaya seeds. First place in the Teen Division was Briana Garza as Medusa. Her head was covered with poisonous snakes made of burnt orange and grapefruit peel missed with citrus sawdust. The snakes continue to her necklace and are covered with white, purple or brown onion skin, to represent scales. She carries a giant snake made of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and tangerine slices. Sunflowers form the pupils of the eyes while the rest is done in green citrus. The tongue is palm bark. Medusa wears a jade green dress made from dehydrated citrus leaves. The front is adorned with tree branches while each dress has a side panel of seed designed to resemble snake scales. She wears several rings adorned with snakes as well. Costumes decorated with citrus originated in the 1930s as a marketing tool to draw national attention to the citrus industry of the Rio Grande Valley, and the tradition continues today.

Winter Texans looking for great omelet are heading over to Victoria Palms Restaurant in Donna. “The Omelet Guy,” Dave Rountree, has returned for his 10th year as omelet chef. A native of the Rio Grande Valley, Dave was a 1969 graduate of P.S. J.A. High School. This year he will attend the 50th anniversary of his graduation. After graduation, he worked as a cook along the way as he traveled the country, making it now 50 years he has been cooking. He made a stop in Missouri where he met a girl who ended his roaming ways. He joined the Air Force and then used the G.I. Bill to attend the Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Management program at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. After graduating in 1978, he returned to Missouri where he got job at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where he eventually became Director of Food Services for the hospital. After retiring, Dave and his wife decided to spend their winters in South Texas. It wasn’t long before he was hired as a chef for Victoria Restaurant. His omelets were immediately a big hit with the patrons and now Dave has cooked about 90,000 omelets at Victoria, approximately 10,000 per year. He hopes to reach 100,000 by the end of the season in March or April. The omelets are made to order. Dave offers tomatoes, spinach, black olives, red peppers, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions and, of course, cheese for his omelets, and his guests tell him what they want. The restaurant also offers a special three-ingredient omelet with a half Belgium waffle covered with strawberries and whipped cream that is very popular. On occasion, he offers a Mexican omelet or an Italian omelet, if he has the ingredients available. Winter Texans often tell him, “That was the best omelet I ever ate,” and they really are that good. He is recognized when he goes out and referred to as “The Omelet Guy,” or “The Omelet Artist.” Dave is looking forward to a special year with the celebration of his high school graduation 50 years ago and 50 years as a cook. And he hopes to reach that magical 100,000 omelets cooked a Victoria Palms. Go by and try one of Dave’s delicious omelets and help him make it happen! The restaurant is open for Breakfast - Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant is located at 602 Kingston Way, in Donna, inside the Victoria Palms Resort.
