Twin Lakes RV Park creates comical float

By Kathy Olivarez Twin Lakes RV Park in Mission is one of several parks in the area that have been regular participants in the Texas Citrus Fiesta, building floats for the Parade of Oranges each year. This year is no exception as a team of park residents have been busily preparing for this Saturday’s parade. This year’s Parade of Oranges will start at 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30 at the intersection of Conway Avenue and FM 495 (Griffin Pkwy.) and move south along Conway to 4th Street in downtown Mission. Spectators usually arrive a couple of hours early (or more) to pick out a good vantage spot to watch the parade, as tens of thousands of people line the streets every year to watch the most spectacular parade in the Rio Grande Valley. The parade is composed of locally constructed floats and many other entries, including bands and dance teams – and Winter Texans who show parade-goers they sure know how to have fun and liven up the party! For the float-building competition, there are two Winter Texan categories for Jim Booth is hard at work building Snoopy’s Doghouse for the Twin Lakes RV Park See TWIN LAKES pg. 23 float for Saturday’s Parade of Oranges in Mission.

Members of the Sweet Adelines Magic Valley Chorus rehearse for an upcoming performance.

By Brittany Asbury The Magic Valley Chorus is a singular chapter of Sweet Adelines International, created from an international group of ladies who gather in McAllen, Texas. The chorus is made up of Winter Texan ladies from Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, Texas, and all over the Midwest who come together every year to sing in a barbershop style all-female chorus. One of those Midwesterners is Sandy SEitz, of Wisconsin, who just took over as director of the chorus last November. Sandy says her qualifications as a director grew out of the five years she spent as a part of the Racine, Wis. chorus, from 1969 to1975. She was a part of the gold medal winners in the historic year of 1973, when Sweet Adelines International held their first National Chorus Competition. She said, “You learn so much, you can’t possibly forget.” Sandy has been a part of Sweet Adelines International for 23 years, See MAGIC VALLEY pg. 3

From pg. 1 with the last 18 years as a member of the Magic Valley Chorus and one of its quartets. That quartet, Shades of Grey, is as unique as the chorus itself. This group has had the same four people from four different states for 17 years, which is a very unusual record for any quartet. They decided from the start that they weren’t going to compete, but they love to sing in the shows. Their bass is June Roembke, from Indiana; their lead is Pat Whitney, from Minnesota; their tenor is Marge Laverack from Michigan; and of course, Sandy is their baritone. Another baritone in the Magic Valley Chorus, Janet Doyle, is team coordinator for the chorus and has been singing with them for 19 years. She proves the rule that barbershop singers just pull each other into the music. An elementary school friend kept sending cards at Christmas, birthdays, holidays, asking over and over, “Are you singing yet?” until Janet joined the Magic Valley Chorus. It might have taken her a while to join the chorus, but Janet’s been singing since she was a child, through organized chorus in junior high, and church choir. Yet out of all the singing she has done, Janet thinks that “barbershop singing is better, because it’s all a-cappella, no instruments but the voice.” Her favorite thing about barbershop singing is the harmony. She started first as a

over the song. She then changed to sing lead, and just this year changed to singing bass, as it fits her voice better now. She laughed and added, “It was hard to relearn the music every time, because each part is so different…. I just had to go learn almost all the songs again.” Sandy and Janet are members of the two unique pieces that make up the Magic Valley Chorus. Sandy is a Winter Texan and is one of those who go back North for the summer, and Janet is a part of the 12 resident Texans who like to call themselves the “Summer Chorus.” The Summer Chorus only exists from May through early November, but they practice every week as usual, streaming the summer rehearsals live so that the chorus members up north can join in. The best part of these recorded practices is that any of the members can go back to the recording and sing along with it on their own time. But no matter where any of the members of the chorus live, they pour their time and energy into making the Magic Valley Chorus a living competitive force. Not only is the Chorus singing for Governor Greg Abbott on February 12, but they have also been preparing to compete in the regional chorus competition, “Swinging on a Star!” which is held in Houston on March 17-20 this year. The whole chorus is proud to be a part of the 45,000 women around the world who are a part of the Sweet Adelines organization,

Jazz, that has spread worldwide. Janet ex- site, magicvalleychorus.com, for the latest plained how women’s barbershop singing information. grew out of the wives of barbershopping men who “saw the men having so much fun while they only got to sit around and sew uniforms, so they started their own in the early 50s.” Ladies’ barbershop is the same as men’s barbershop, just an octave higher, and it’s lovely to hear the pure tones with songs from “Darkness in the Delta” to the hymn medley of “Little Brown Church.” Some of those songs will be a part of the Magic Valley Chorus’ annual spring show, which will be held at the PSJA Theatre in Pharr on Feb. 20, as well as a little earlier at their first show of the year “Affair of the Heart,” which will be at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Feb. 13. The Chorus also encourages everyone to come to the combined show that they will be putting on with the Magic Valley Men of A-Chord, the Senior Ambassadors, and the RGV Band on March 4 at Center Church (formerly Trinity Worship Center) in Pharr. The Magic Valley Chorus is full of ladies who love to sing and they are happy to sing for anyone who asks them. They also welcome anyone who is interested in joining the Magic Valley Chorus to come by their rehearsal, which is held Sandy Seitz every Monday from 7-10 p.m. in the muChorus Director sic room of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 301 W. Shazam! The Gomer and Patsy Show is back in RGV

Gary and Patsy Crain perform comedy and music in one great show. The show was voted 2015 Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year for the Valley Star Awards by Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. Hear Gary perform realistic impersonations and jokes in the voices of Gomer, Barney Fife, Bill Clinton, and Mr. Haney from Green Acres, among others. Also hear his impersonation of Walter Brennan’s song, “Old Rivers.” A special appearance by Elvis’ cousin, Gomer P. Presley, in full Elvis costume, singing two Elvis songs in Elvis’ voice as Gomer interjects funny comments throughout the song. Patsy Crain performs the songs of Patsy Cline, Connie Francis and Nancy Sinatra and also performs duets with Gary of some of George Strait’s hits among oldies rock and roll, gospel and hits from the 50s. It’s a fun-filled evening and guests are guaranteed not to be bored. In 1962 Gary did his first impersonation of Crazy Guggenheim from the Jackie Gleason Show as a high school junior and part of the Junior Review at his high school to raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet. As a senior, one of the high school juniors performed Gomer Pyle. Gary saw him and thought he could do it too and added Gomer to his list of characters. He quickly mastered the good nature and innocent characteristics of Gomer Pyle who was first on the Andy Griffith Show and later had his own show. Gomer served him well in the military and he actually did some commercials for Armed Forces Radio in Spain using Gomer’s voice. He recently did some free commercials back home in Arkansas with a friend for fun and wants to pursue others in the future. In 1994, he met Keith Thibodeaux who played Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy.” Thibodeaux invited him to do some “Mayberry” events. They became friends and have done a number of shows together. In 2005, they performed together in Tuscaloosa, Alabama doing a benefit, Eagles Wings, for disabled persons. They performed singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” a capella where Keith harmonized with Gary. The show was a great success. Gary continued to do Mayberry events and did testimonials for churches as well. Gary has performed on stage with original cast members of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and the Andy Griffith Show as well as stars from the old classic westerns of the 50s. Their son, Grayson, who lives in Edinburg, encouraged him to come to the Rio Grande Valley and entertain in senior citizens parks. They first came down in 2008 and performed at the Entertainer’s Showcase for activity directors in RGV Winter Texan resorts. To their amazement they booked 58 shows the first year.

For the past eight years they have been entertaining in RGV. Gary’s wife, Teresa, joined him in the shows singing Patsy Cline’s music. She took the stage name, Patsy, because she sounds a bit like Patsy Cline when she sings. She also does a great Nancy Sinatra and Connie Francis. Patsy makes all of her costumes herself. In the summer of 2015 they performed at Fairfield Bay Resort in Fairfield, Arkansas, on Greer’s Ferry Lake, where they entertained the vacationers staying in the condos. They are planning on returning again this year from May to October. They have also performed at Treasure Lake RV Park in Branson. On April 23, they will be doing a big show in Tupelo, Mississippi for a children’s rehab center. The local sheriff looks like Barney Fife and does Fife impersonations so they will do something together during the show. Gary expects that to be a fun show and invited anyone in the area to come out and see it. Otherwise look for Gary (Gomer) and Patsy around the Rio Grande Valley through the end of February. The Gomer & Patsy Show can be seen Jan. 31 at Paradise South in Mercedes; Feb. 1, Palm Shadows, Donna; Feb. 4, Winter Ranch, Alamo; Feb. 11, Victoria Palms, Donna; Feb. 16, Southern Comfort, Weslaco; Feb. 24, Bentsen Grove, Mission; Feb. 28 Schlitterbahn Resort Hotel, South Padre Island; and Feb. 5, W&I Resort, Mission. All shows are at 7 p.m.

David Church performs Hank Williams tribute “I cain’t help it if I’m still in love with you,” were the words of the immortal country singer, Hank Williams, one of the most popular classic country singers ever. Fans everywhere mourned his untimely death. No tribute artist sounds more like Hank Williams than David Church. When he sings Hanks Song, if the listener closes his or her eyes, they will think Hank is singing. Church’s physical build is a bit like Hank’s so he resembles Hank when he wears the suit and hat like Hank’s. He is widely recognized as number one tribute artist to Hank Williams. Church was born in Lancaster, Ohio, the youngest of 14 children into a musical family that enjoyed bluegrass and classic country music. Church’s ability to sound like Hank has made him the most requested performer on RFD TV, where he and his wife, Terri Lisa had performed for over 10 years. RFD TV has over 65 million viewers throughout the United States. This is true in spite of the fact he has never had a hit song of his own. He attributes his success to the fact people are tired of the music they hear today on the radio and prefer the class country sound instead. Recently, his association with Reverbnation a music website featuring artists from

all over the world, David has been successful with his own songs. In 2012 “I Don’t Live Lonely Anymore” went to No. 20 on the charts and stayed there two weeks. His patriotic song, “The Old Red, White & Blue,” also released in 2012, went to No. 6 on the charts. In 2013 “A Dime at a Time” rose to No. 16. David’s wife, Terri sings backup for David and is a recording artist and songwriter in her own right. David Church can be seen Jan. 28 at Winter Ranch in Alamo; Jan. 29 at Casa Del Valle in Alamo, Jan. 31, the Border Theater, Mission; Feb. 12, Eastgate RV, Harlingen; Feb. 19 at W&I Resort, Mission; Feb. 21, Snow to Sun, Weslaco; and Feb. 22, at the Border Theater, in Mission.

Dave & Daphne return to RGV

For a high-energy, action show with two very talented musicians, the Dave & Daphne Show is a real Winter Texan crowd pleaser. Dave Salver was once lead guitarist for Barbara Mandrell. He has performed at the White House on three different occasions. Roy Clark declared Dave to be “one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet!” Barbara Mandrell simply said, “Dave is the best guitarist I ever had.” Dave makes songs like the “Orange Blossom Special,” “Flight of the Bumblebee” and the “William Tell Overture,” which are known for their difficulty, look like child’s play. In addition to his skills as a guitarist, he is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter and humorist. Referred to fondly by her father as “The Mouth of the South,” Daphne has one of the best voices ever to be heard in the Rio Grande Valley. Daphne toured with The Gaither’s, one of the best gospel groups ever. She has sung with The Florida Boys, The Cathedrals, Rex Nelon, The Hinsons, and many others. She was voted Female of the Year by the Southern Gospel Music Association. With a voice that has been referred to as a cross between Shania Twain and Patsy Cline, she is able to sing almost any kind of music. She also does the yodeling music of Patsy Montana. When Daphne sings Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” it sends chills down the spine. Her version of “Amazing

Grace” and “The Lord’s Prayer,” also showcase her amazing voice. Both Daphne and Dave give God credit for enormous talents he gave them. Dave & Daphne can be seen Feb. 3 at Ranchero Village in Weslaco; Feb. 4, Trophy Gardens, Alamo; Feb. 5, Rio Valley Estates, Weslaco; Feb. 6, Enchanted Valley, Mission; Feb. 10, Pine to Palm, Weslaco; Feb.11, Winter Ranch, Alamo; Feb. 12, at 1015 RV Park, Weslaco, (6:30 p.m.); Feb. 13, Seven Oaks, Mission; Feb. 14, Valley View Estates, Mission; Feb. 15, McAllen Mobile Park; Feb. 17, Bentsen Grove, Mission; Feb. 18, The Grove, San Juan; Feb. 19, East Gate, Harlingen; Feb. 20, Winterhaven, Pharr; Feb. 23, Wagon City North, Mission and Feb. 25, Mobile Gardens, Mission. Entertainers Showcase II reveals great new, old talent

By Kathy Olivarez William Florian, a former lead singer with the New Christy Minstrels – a popular group back in the 1960s – was one of the new performers who sent activity directors scurrying to the booking room during the second Entertainment Showcase held Thursday, Jan. 21 at Mission Bell RV Resort. He sang songs like “This Land is Your Land,” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine.” He also does songs like Puff, the Magic Dragon,” sung by Peter, Paul and Mary along with old classics like “If I Had a Hammer.” He can also do a John Denver tribute show. Absolutely Country, Definitely Gospel from Branson also new to the Valley,

received attention with their great harmony. They sang songs like “I’ll Fly Away.” They also do the Classic Country of Loretta Lynn’s music like “I Was Born a Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Tim Hadler and Katrina Campbell of Nashville were also popular among the new entertainers. They played fiddle and guitar and did songs like, “Jackson,” that had activity directors tapping toes. Their Irish instrumental was also very pretty. Connie’s Cabaret, new act from Minnesota received audience applause with “Life is a Cabaret,” and Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.” For activity directors looking for an entirely different type of entertainment, Teresa Burney does a “Blues to the Bone,”

Lindley Creek performing at Entertainers Showcase I

show composed entirely of Blues music. Of performers who have been around a while Wade and Teresa Landry cornered a lot of interest. As one activity director put it, “Man, that guy can fiddle.” Wade plays Country Swing, Cajun Music, Classic Country and Gospel. Teresa sings with a rich voice. They performed several Cajun tunes and an old Hank Williams song, “I Can’t Help It If I’m Still in Love with You.” Jeff Gordon was very popular with activity directors. He sang a variety of classics such as The Big Bopper’s “Oh Baby, You Know What I Like,” Conway Twitty’s “Man with a Slow Hand,” Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady,” and Elvis’s “Stuck On You.”

J.C. Harrisson, who now in his third year in the Valley, was popular with activity directors. He sings songs like “Bakersfield,” “Livin’ on Love,” “You Are Always on My Mind,” and “Lovesick Blues.” J. C. Bullock with his rendition of “Louisiana Saturday Night,” Mel Tillis characterization, and “Auctioneer” song were looked on favorably by activity directors. Sherwin & Pam Linton were also very popular among activity directors. From pg. 1 RV & MH parks. The Winter Texan parks are divided into large park and small park categories and Twin Lakes falls in the small park category since it has less than 200 lots. This small park is big on spirit and enthusiasm, however, as the park residents enjoy taking part in the annual activity. In fact, they have won first place in the small park division several times in the past few years. This year’s parade theme of “Citrus, Cartoon and Comic Book Characters” gave the Twin Lakes team plenty of opportunity to have some fun with this year’s design. Jim Booth was hard at work on Snoopy’s Doghouse when the Winter Texan Times stopped in last weekend. The doghouse already had dehydrated grapefruit slices attached to its roof. Nearby was a desk for Lucy from the Peanut’s gang so she could give out psychiatric advice for a nickel. Other objects complementing the parade theme, such as Fred Flintstone’s car, were sitting on the float bed. Schroeder’s piano would be added to the float later. Soon, Jim was joined by his wife, Jane Booth and Marcia Thomas, who were carrying a sign for the float featuring Porky Pig. The three explained the plans for the float, which will represent a number of cartoon and comic book characters. Other residents of the park will also join the

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

fun, dressing up like cartoon characters such as Fred Flintstone, members of the Peanuts gang, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, who will all ride on this year’s float. And the park’s king and queen, “King Arthur and Queen Guinevere” will sit on their throne on the float. Still more park residents will be walking alongside the float, dressed as Popeye, Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss, Donald and Daisy Duck, a Bumble Bee, Hello Kitty and Cinderella, escorting the float down the parade route. Sounds like fun! Booth said the citrus products would not be put on the float until Thursday and Friday so that it would stay fresh for the parade and not get wet in case of rain. Among the products they plan to use are dehydrated orange peels for the floor of the float. Limes will adorn the Camelot sign. Attend the parade and watch for this creative float and costumes to see how they are using citrus products to decorate this whimsical float filled with memories of good times! There will also be other floats in the parade sponsored by other Winter Texan parks. Check out the Twin Lakes float and the other floats constructed by some very creative Winter Texans. Who knows? Maybe you can get your park to join the fun next year by building a float as well. Have a great time at the Texas Citrus Fiesta this weekend. See you there!

From pg. 8 Next Teardrop Falls.” In 60 years, Sherwin has not missed a single performance! For those looking for Gospel music, 4 His Glory is hard to beat. Rolando Reyes has a fantastic voice as do other members of the group. They do songs like, “I’ll Fly Away,” and “Pray for Me.” Rolando also does a solo show where he sings songs like “Autumn Leave,” and “Hello Loneliness.” Both the group and the individual singer got nods from activity directors. The Castoways continued to be popular with songs like “Great Balls of Fire,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Surfin’ USA.” For those planning a special party, the Conga Line of ladies dancing in the aisles with brush

lights seemed to be just the right touch. Strings, Keys & Harmony did a good job with “Lyin’ Cheatin,’ Mean Mistreatin’ Heart,” “Walking After Midnight,” and “Jose Cuervo, You Are a Friend of Mine.” The singer has an excellent voice and the guys playing guitar and keyboard are good too. Men of A-Chord sang a capella “King of the Road” in great harmony. They too are popular with activity directors. Country Pickin’, a country western band playing classic country had a good sound in music and vocal. There was a fiddle, two guitars and a keyboard. Look for upcoming performances by these and other Valley Wintertainers™, as they post their ads in the Winter Texan Times.

The Feb. 3 deadline is fast approaching to visit Mission Historical Museum’s annual Quilt Show to vote for your favorite quilt and determine the Viewer’s Choice award. The quilt show display is in the Mission Historical Museum Annex building, located at 200 E. Tom Landry. When the Winter Texan Times visited the quilt show, Patty Redlin, a volunteering Winter Texan from Indiana who works at the annex two days a week, gave a tour. A quilt lover, Redlin pointed out several outstanding quilts. One was a quilt in a Dresden plate pat-

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

www.wttrgv.com

Mission Quilt Show ends soon tern made from old quilt sacks that date back to the years between 1931 and 1935. The tiny hexagon shapes that form the outside of the plate were cut from the feed sack patterns. Redlin recognized one of the patterns because her mother had a dress made from feed sacks with that pattern, which she kept and made over for Redlin in the 1950s. Another interesting quilt was what Redline called a stack and whack quilt. In this case the designer cut a design on the material into pieces and shaped it into something else altogether to make the quilt’s design.

A third quilt was completely reversible with a circular pattern sitting on top of a split rail design. Bright vivid colors made the quilt beautiful even without the unusual design. According to Redlin, one visitor to the museum spent almost an hour looking at the quilt and trying to figure out how the circles were embedded in the design. During her study she turned the quilt over (with a glove of course), and found the backside was a traditional split rail design. Redlin also pointed out two quilts that were handcrafted without machines. One was a beautiful quilt filled with flowers.

The other had a number of shapes that Redlin said were used as good lock signs by the Amish. She lived near the Amish in Ohio for two years and saw some of the same designs on Amish barns. She said the designer of the quilt did not know they were Amish designs. She found the patterns in a quilting pattern book, liked them and decided to make the quilt. The last item Redlin pointed out was a wall hanging. The design on it came from a silk poster of an Austin band, “Weems” that the designer’s grandson was fond of. She took the silk poster to a graphic design-

www.wttrgv.com er who created a pattern, which she transferred to a wall hanging for her grandson. In addition to these quilts there are a number of others on display. The last date to vote for your favorite quilt is Feb. 3. On Friday, Feb. 5 the winners of the quilt show will be announced in an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. There will be a Turning of the Quilts program immediately after the awards presentations by the Winter Texans Times, sponsor of the quilt show. Saturday, Feb. 6, is the last day the quilts will be on display.

Harlingen Winter Texan Appreciation Day was fun

By Kathy Olivarez The Harlingen Winter Texan Appreciation Day was a busy event. With entertainment both at Casa de Amistad and the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Winter Texans had plenty of choices. There were bands and folkloric dancers providing entertainment at Casa De Amistad. Many Winter Texans gathered around the stage area to watch and children of all elementary ages performed folkloric dances. “The kids are my favorite. We love to watch the little children perform,” Alan and Marlene Meeker said. It was their favorite part of the festival. Kelly Frey and Lloyd Murray, both of Kalamazoo, Michigan, agreed the best part was watching the little children perform. Long Elementary in Harlingen presented several grades of its folkloric dance program providing a full hour of entertainment with kindergarten doing Azteca dances; first grade the State of Michoacán; second grade, Jalisco; third grade, Chihuahua; fourth grade, Vera Cruz; and fifth grade Tabasco. Each state in Mexico has its own collection of traditional dance styles unique to the area. Other performers at Casa de Amistad include Knox Jones and CoZmic CowboYs, a southern rock band and Lauren Corzine, who performed on the outside

41

stages. Mariachi Sol Azteca performed in the lobby at 11 a.m. and the Harlingen Community Band played at noon. Ronnie’s School of Music and San Benito Veterans High School students performed along with San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy Flamenco ensemble. Between performances Harlingen merchants like Jo Liston of Go with Jo Travels, were giving away prizes. Jo gave a trip to the Eagle Casino and $50 off any four-day trip she was offering. Other merchants were giving gifts that represented their businesses. Outside Casa de Amistad, food vendors were selling a variety of foods while musicians entertained on an outside bandstand. The antique car show was getting a bit of attention, as there were a variety of older vehicles. Inside there was a quilt show by Frontera Quilting Bee on display in the entrance. At times there were dancers performing in the lobby as well. To one side was a display of business vendors for Harlingen. And there was a small “flea market” featuring Mexican clothing, foods and other items. Approximately 2,000 people attended the event and received the bright yellow “12th Annual Winter Texan Appreciation Day” T-shirts provided by the City of Harlingen.
