First Winter Texan Showdown RC race a smashing success Randy Rutger had a new driver for his race car and needed some time getting the driver and the car acquainted. Being a former oval track and drag racing driver, the Kalamazoo native knew how important it was that the two have the perfect feel for one another; that the car was set up to not only the driver but to the track. Every driver, every car and every track is different, from the high banks of Daytona to the egg-shaped oval of Darlington. The driver, however, in this case, was a new remote control he purchased just the night before. The car was his remote control race car, that he skillfully sped around the dirt oval track at Bit-O-Heaven RV Park for the first Bit-O-Heaven Winter Texan Showdown RC Races. Rutger also has some experience in the RC world, flying model airplanes. He said the trick is just having the hand-eye coordination. He also may have a step up on the other competitors since he spent a career setting up cars for the different tracks and their specific makeups. Eight Winter Texan parks were represented with 57 drivers competing either in the two-wheel or four-wheel drive races. The races were broken down into heats with five to seven cars in each heat. The winner would then advance to the finals. Hundreds of spectators lined up around the track, many of them sitting back in their lawn chairs enjoying the food and drink that were available on what was near-perfect weather for race day, Friday, Jan. 25. Sun Racing, with its wide variety of R/C cars was present and drew a lot of interest. One of the managers at the R/C store said it’s amazing how much interest there has been in R/C racing in the past three years. Tracks are being built at many different Winter Texan parks throughout the
Valley. While circle (also known as oval) tracks are the most common, there are some other types. Some parks have experimented with tracks made for jumping; others have worked on carpet tracks and some have created RC Crawler/Predator tracks. All have been a huge hit with the Winter Texans. The head-to-head competition looks like it will be huge as well. Some of the spectators stood near where above them “drivers maneuvered” their vehicles, with speeds up to 30 miles per hour around
the track and talked about who the best drivers were; it was just like listening to people in the 90s argue over who was better – NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt. “Watch out for him,” one man said, gesturing toward Scott Campbell as he brought his car to the track. “He’s a good one. He might win this.” Campbell is also the park manager at Bit-O-Heaven. He and his wife Lisa were two of the organizers of the big production, which drew in more than 400 spectators – a little Daytona 500, South Texas style. Lisa Campbell said they wanted to let racers know that the Bit-O-Heaven track is available to other Winter Texans. She also said that a long-term goal would be to turn the one-time event into a possible circuit, where other parks have a race See RACES pg. 32

Who knew that just a few short years ago a 12 year old would become the youngest ever solo entertainer with her own show in the Rio Grande Valley? This year, Kelli Marie also became the youngest person to be nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year along with Maggie May, Tavie Spivey and LaDawn, three veteran performers and friends. Around the age of 10, Kelli Marie was invited on stage to do special numbers with such artists at The Punches family, Kerry Christiansen, Bill Chrastil, Mario and Southern Anthem. But Kelli’s talent as a multi-faceted vocalist was discovered by businessman Jim Fitzgerald one afternoon in his living room where Kelli’s dad was helping him with some painting. Shortly after an audition in that same room, Jim and Debbie, his wife, co-owners of DonWes Flea Market, offered several entertainment slots to this 12-year-old kid. At these gigs, invitations began coming in to perform at various RV and mobile home parks and resorts. Anyone who knows Kelli, knows that she has always been socially advanced beyond her years, said Michael Christianson, Kelli’s father. This combined with her undeniable vocal talent and cheerful personality lights up even the largest stages in southern Texas and numerous venues throughout Mexico, U.S. and Canada. But the back story is even more interesting and quite inspirational, Michael said. Kelli Marie’s mother, Marieta, is a former English teacher and her father, Michael – better known as “Kelli’s Dad”, has been a medical missions volunteer since 2000. Michael has made more than 400 border crossings into Mexico donating everything from natural medicines and Band-Aids ® to wheelchairs and hospital beds, in partnership with numerous friends and churches, Michael explained. Together, the family has conducted many dozens of health seminars, lectured on family and civic responsibilities, built or remodeled small health clinics and churches, and taught in private and public schools. On more than 200 occasions, Michael or the entire family has joined forces with government, health or church organizations to conduct medical brigades and health fairs. Over 20,000 eye exams have been performed and many thousands of pairs of eye glasses and eye medicines have been distributed, according to Michael. Kelli is generally the receptionist, noting patients’ names and directing patient traffic for these brigades. Since age 10, she has been the team’s translator for
English-only-speaking doctors, nurses, surgeons, teachers, pastors and priests. She has been “home and car schooled” due to frequent travels and medical mission trips, Michael stated. She is active in church and civic activities and participates in weekly Christian youth clubs and camping programs, and she studies art, guitar and photography privately at the University of Montemorelos. She is frequently invited to lead the song service in church and public Christian crusades. “Our family’s faith and confidence in the Devine has sustained us through many trials and dangers,” Michael said. These convictions are shared in Kelli’s concerts along with family friendly comedy and audience participation. “Kelli’s dad” invites Winter Texans to be entertained and inspired by “the Valley’s Sweetheart,” Miss Kelli Marie. Her shows consist of tributes to such artists as Dolly, Loretta, Reba, Adele, Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt, Tammy Wynette, Marie Osmond and others. Her performances include a variety of musical genres including pop, country, easy listening, Mo-town and Gospel. For bookings, contact Kelli at maycolchristianson@hotmail.com or phone 417-434-7566. Kelli will be performing at Ranchero Village, Weslaco, at 7 p.m., Jan. 30; Countryside, Donna, 2 p.m., Feb. 3; Palm Shadows, Donna, 7 p.m. Feb. 4; and Country Sunshine, Weslaco, 7 p.m., Feb. 5. For additional shows, watch for her ad in the Wintertainers™ section of the Winter Texan Times.

While it may be a little farther than most restaurants, the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, located in Rivera, is certainly worth the effort to get there. The restaurant sits right on the coast of Baffin Bay, a well-known fishing spot for black drum, redfish and speckled trout. It can also be a good spot for birders as roseate spoonbills can often be spotted in the area during their migratory stays. The bay borders the King Ranch and the Kenedy Ranch, so the possibility of seeing wildlife is good, including deer, javalinas, Nilgai, and smaller mammals like raccoons. One of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu is black drum ribs, usually served with hand-breaded onion rings. The Baffin Bay Seafood Company may just be the only restaurant to serve these tasty ribs fried with cornmeal. They are delicious! Especially with their homemade tartar sauce made with special secret ingredients. They offer other tasty sides, such as the grilled vegetables with onions and mushrooms. In addition to the black drum ribs, we tried the grilled and fried drum, which were both delicious. We just had to sample the fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. Both are very good, and my personal favorite was the big, plump grilled shrimp with a delicious fresh-catch taste. My husband, the gumbo expert in the family, said their gumbo is great! We also had oysters on the half shell and fried oysters. Steaks and chicken are also available for those who aren’t in the mood for a great seafood dinner. Save room for their delicious desserts! You’ll enjoy rounding out your meal with molten lava cake, brownies with ice cream or New York cheesecake. Patrons Rick and Mary Ann had come from San Antonio to try the black drum ribs they had heard about and they said they really enjoyed them. Linda, a local, said the drum ribs are so good they don’t need any kind of sauce to complement their delicious flavor. She loves the ribs and the Baffin Bay Seafood Company is the only place she knows that serves them. Greg, another local, said his favorite by far is the frog legs. “I like to come on Mondays when frog legs are the special,” he said. A trip to the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, combined with a sightseeing trip to the King Ranch, might just be unbeatable. Winter Texan resorts may want to organize a dinner trip for their residents. If a busload is going, please call 361-297-5174 and let them know in advance how many are coming. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 1294 CR 2360 E on the coastline in Rivera.

In October of 2018 Sherwin Linton received his 12th Hall of Fame induction in his hometown of Watertown, South Dakota. Having been inducted into several national and Midwest Halls of Fame Sherwin is enjoying his 63rd year of touring as a full time musician and bandleader. At his side for 40 years is his wife Pam. Though they tour with a six piece band, their trio act, with bassist Dick Moebakken, has been a Rio Grande Valley favorite for twenty years. Many fans will be excited to learn that Pam has released a new 20-song CD titled “Love’s Ring of Fire.” With her beautiful lilting Folk style vocals Pam gives this title song a gentle sweet treatment that even Johnny Cash enjoyed when he said, “Sing it pretty Pam.” Sherwin has just completed filming of a timely music video for a song he wrote in the 1990s, “We Need A Lot More Guitars and A Lot Less Guns on the Streets of America.” This song is not anti-gun ownership, but anti-violence, Linton explains. The film features 20 guitar players from all music genre’s and an all-inclusive demographic. The video brings this troubling subject to eye-opening reality with the line “I never heard of anybody being guitared down.” Sherwin hopes that

with the production and marketing of this video one person can be influenced to rethink a senseless violent act and positive progress on this difficult subject may have begun. The video will officially release in March. With an unparalled 63-year music career without missing a performance, the Sherwin & Pam Linton Show draws from a repertoire of over 5000 songs in an eclectic and entertaining mix of Traditional Country Music, Gospel, Rockabilly and Folk creatively seasoned with the stories of a true American raconteur. JANUARY 30, 2019 GOLF
From pg. 1 and get it to us before 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1. That’s this Friday, so don’t put this aside for later. If you use a computer, it’s quicker and easier. Just go online to our website at www.wintertexantimes.com and click on the banner at the very top of the home page (above the Win-ter Texan Times logo) and the online ballot form will load up. You’ll probably have to scroll down to see the form after giving it a minute to load. We invite Winter Texan golfers to look over the listing of golf courses on the ballot and tell us which courses are your favorites in the Rio Grande Valley. If there are some courses you haven’t played, go give them a try. Who knows, you may discover a new “favorite” to add to your list. South Padre Island….a dreamscape The sand, the water and the breeze are just some of the things people love when they visit South Padre Island; those elements are seemingly calling out to visitors for a dreamy time. On the golf course, however, those same three elements can turn a dreamy day into a challenging round of golf at South Padre Island Golf Club. Annually voted as one of the favorite Winter Texan courses in the Valley, the 6,800-yard South Padre Island Golf Club course can meet a variety of skill levels, from the part-time golfer just looking to

South Padre Island Golf Course go out and “hit the ball around,” to the most avid competitor who wants a challenge with every swing. With the most picturesque sights from many tees of the Laguna Madre and South Pa-dre Island in the distance, the view alone at South Padre Island Golf Club is enough to get you to go back time and again. Located at 1 Golf House Road in Laguna Vista, the course can go from a normal to challenging to extremely difficult course when the north wind decides to pay a visit.

Still, if you’re looking to play a course that has plenty of specials for Winter Texans, that has the most comforting of views and gives you a variety of options as far as challenge goes, this is the course for you. River Bend For 30 years, River Bend Golf Club in Brownsville just sat there. The place got its name from the huge bend in the Rio Grande that borders the resort and provides the property with a lush tropical setting where golfers can see plants and birds not seen elsewhere in the United States. Golfers who lived there would go
River Bend Golf Course out and play a round, especially enjoying the fact that it had no bunkers. The course, which rides along the banks of the Rio Grande, had personality but, like a hermit, very few people saw it. New owners bought the place in 2015 and it didn’t take long for it to sit atop of the list of Winter Texans’ favorite courses. The course is also home to about 700 Winter Texans and a growing number of See GOLF pg. 17

From pg. 16 permanent residents. The course went from a 9-hole course to the full 18 in 1985, during a boon in the golf world. Courses were being built everywhere. However, if you don’t tell anyone, how will they find out? As soon as the Barnard fam-ily purchased the course, they advertised, making sure Winter Texans across the Valley knew that this course was open to them. What have the results been like? Two years ago River Bend tied South Padre Island for the Winter Texans’ favorite Lower Valley course. The course is located at 4541 Military Highway 281, in Brownsville. For more infor-mation, call 956-548-0191. Rancho Viejo Golf and Country Club You’ve seen that huge golf ball hanging in the sky as you pass the South Padre Island exit and head toward Brownsville gon Expressway 83. That means you are ,approaching Rancho Viejo, where you’ll ofind great dining, rentals for overnight ,stays, a spa, an amazing pool – and a terrific golf course. It’s no wonder Winter 5Texans chose it as a Lower Valley favorite fgolf course. - The layout and the surrounding trees 0give this course a comfortable feel. Don’t fget too cozy through – it will lull you into a false sense of security. The small greens make an already-chal-
www.wintertexantimes.com
lenging layout even more so. You could be a monster hitter off the tees, passing 300 yards on a regular basis. However, if you don’t hit the approach shot well, you’ll be chipping up onto the green and needing to one-putt to save par. Holes are also well protected by water and numerous sand traps. It is located at 1 Rancho Viejo Dr. in Rancho Viejo, Texas. Call 956-350-4000 for more information regarding this 18-hole, 72 par, 6,800yard course. Long Island Village “Great things come in small packages.” “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” There may be 100 clichés that come to mind when you take your first look – or even your second or third look – at the Long Island Village Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-3 course where most holes are less than 100 yards. You may consider it to be just a quick pit stop to play and just simply cross off your list of courses played. It’s definitely an underdog in your mind when you compare it to courses like South Padre Island or Tierra Santa or Palm View Golf in the Rio Grande Valley. Then you play a round. Suddenly, you start thinking that this may be the toughest course you’ve ever played in your life.

Long Island Village You try to shrug the thought off, but you can’t. Don’t worry; you’re not the only one who has had this mental and physical struggle. While the wind is infamous all across the South Texas landscape, it has a personal vendetta on the Long Island Village course, blowing and swirling; sometimes you may have to go up two clubs – to hit the ball 120 yards. Golfers have claimed that the wind is a knock-down wind; others say they’ve seen it blow in
two different directions, all within the time a ball is in flight from tee to green. Last year, management at the course was thrilled to hear that Winter Texans had cho-sen them among one of their favorite courses. Can the tiny course be a big winner again or was it just an anomaly? Long Island Golf Course is located at 950 S Garcia St, Port Isabel. For more informa-tion, call (956) 943-7520.

ATTENTION BACK PAIN & SCIATICA SUFFERERS!
We are offering a
Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop at Pure Physical Therapy
located near La Justicia Restaurant
5413 N 23RD ST, McALLEN, TX 78504
• Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? • Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? • Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? • Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? • Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it?
If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) - the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you. Register through this link pure-physicaltherapy.com/sciatica or call our office at (956) 994-8880. Testimonies: ‘’Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!” - Robert Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.” - Marilyn Eisenmenger
Back pain and sciatica can ruin your life. We’ve seen it many times.
✓ It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store. ✓ It can take your focus away on enjoying your life... like spending time with your children or grandchildren... ✓ It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do. ✓ It can ruin your travel plans... ✓ And it can take away your ability to live life... having to rely on others... or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. Less movement and enjoyment of life can lead to depression, increase stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting/not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems and life problems. At Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped hundreds of people from right here in McAl!en and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY!
By request, there will be a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop at Pure Physical Therapy on February 1, 2019 at 2:00 PM.
If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: ✓ The Single, Biggest, #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which stops them from healing... ✓ The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica... ✓ A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) ✓ How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg... ✓ What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.
How Do I Register for the Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop?
a quilt and various door prizes will be awarded

Other health businesses included First, an eye doctor offering stem-cell options for glaucoma and macular degeneration issues; a dermatologist offering SRT-100 basil and squamous cell cancer treatments that are non-invasive; an orthopedic knee surgeon specialist who operates using GPS and does not cut muscles and tendons for partial and full knee replacement; and the UTRGV Director of the Alzheimer’s Center in Brownsville, who was there to talk to Winter Texans about memory issues, accompanied by her four grad students. “We wanted to bring vendors in that were relevant to the Winter Texans’ needs and interests,” Zanetti said. “We saw a lot of people communicating and conversing with all the different vendors and that’s what we wanted to see.” Zanetti, the volunteer who helped with the vendors, said one of the goals of the Expo was to help get close to 90 percent of the Winter Texan RV parks boasting that they have at least one remote control vehicle activity. Alamo Rec currently has a circle track for RC cars, quad copter fly days and RC sail boat races when the weather is nice. During the expo they held a quad copter demonstration and contest for other
parks to win a quad copter package that included a race course that can be designed even in the living room of a home; not much space is needed. The package included three copters, the copter course and three hours of training by a quadcopter expert. “Our contest is based on the percentage of a park’s residents attending our Expo compared to their number of total residents,” Zanetti said. “There is so much negative publicity with the wall and the border and the caravan and things like that, we will continue to promote RC until we get some positive national media attention.”
The Red Hat Queen’s Council recently discussed the possibility of a Royal Caribbean cruise from Galveston early in March before the Winter Texan Red Hat Ladies of the Rio Grande Valley start returning home. Three choices were presented for consideration. A fournight cruise starting at $368 per person, would go to Cozumel Mexico where the Mayan Ruins are located. A five-night cruise starting at $439 per person would include Cozumel and Puerto Costa Maya, a privately-owned island. A seven-night cruise, starting at $533 per person. would include Roatan, Honduras. All costs are based on double occupancy. An insurance fee and registration was not included. Because the trip comes at the end of tourist season for many who start home in March, the trip would be open to husbands if they wish to go. However, it would be limited to members of Red Hat organizations only. If one member wanted to bring a sister or a friend not in Red Hats along it would be okay but other ladies in the Valley seeing this article would need to join one of the many local groups across the Valley. To find a group nearby, call Red Hat Scribe Sharon Newcomber at (414) 915-3874. The consensus of the Queens was the seven-day cruise offered more to do and more opportunities. Several had made the
trip before and said all three sites were beautiful and worth the extra time. There was no set fee provided for bus transportation to and from the Rio Grande Valley. According to the agent those costs could not be determined until it was known how many people would take the bus. It was suggested that another travel agent be contacted to see if they could provide a better picture of total costs. Organizers will look into those questions before the next meeting. In the meantime, Queens are asked to determine how many of their members are interested in going. Festival of Tables In other action, final items related to the Festival of Tables planned for Feb. 6 at Casa del Sol in Donna were completed. The event starts at 11 a.m. with the traditional walk-through to see the different decorations and themes selected. Lunch will be a 12 p.m. with entertainment, an Elvis impersonator, following at 1 p.m. Jan Bergman still had a few tickets left. Call her at (956) 781-8485 or (956) 532-1223. It was announced that the Dazzling Dolphins event always held at South Padre Island was being cancelled due to changes at the park where most of the ladies lived.

Plaza de Toros Santa Maria. She has triumphed in Madrid and many other Spanish plazas as well as all the South American capitals where bullfighting is highly popular, said Fred Renk, owner of the Santa Maria Bullring. She will share the card with the great Manolo Martinez, who opened the 2019 season at Santa Maria Jan. 12, and was awarded the maximum symbolic ears and tail trophies. Also returning is Paulo Campero, of Mexico City, who appeared Jan. 26, winning top awards. Rounding out the card is the debut of Xavier Castro, the idol of Aguascalientes, Mexico. This promises to be the best card ever presented in the Santa Maria Bullring now in its 19th year, Renk said. “The bulls are massive in size, and are coming from the Martinez dynasty – the world famous ranch of El Colmenar Viejo. Tickets are available by calling the bullring 956-481-3300 to make reservations and pay when you arrive. Sunny side $30, shade $35 and covered ringside box seats $40. Gates open at 1 p.m. for food, beverages and pre-bullfight entertainment. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp.
similar. Teams can earn points based on where they finish and points would add up throughout the racing “schedule.” Scott Campbell was actually leading his heat before he flipped the car and ended up taking fourth place. “If you don’t get first place, it doesn’t mean anything after that,” Scott said “I won and the park and the competitors and spectators won by the success of the event.” Norm Peterson, from Victoria Palms, won the two-wheel event, followed by David Leeper, Bit-O-Heaven, in second place and John Wallace, from Alamo Country Club, in third. In the four-wheel division Jerry Lewis, from the Gears Club, took first, followed by Peters and, in third, Cory Drachenbery, from RGV RC Raceway. Scott Campbell said he heard someone recommend having another race in March. He said that the park definitely would want to do one but thought March may be a little too soon. “This is a big production to put together and with several volunteers. And it got pretty nitty gritty out there with the cars bumping and sliding off the track,” he said. “I know when I got home I went straight to sleep. It was a long, but fun, day.”

Barbershop quartets to deliver Singing Valentines
The Men of A-Chord Barbershop Chorus is offering a sweet Valentine’s Day gift that is sure to make that special someone happy – and it isn’t fattening. On Valentine’s Day Barbershop Chorus quartets will be delivering Singing Valentines, a Valentine’s Day serenade in four-part barbershop harmony. What could be more charming? And the Valentine’s Day Serenade package includes a red rose and chocolates. Well, maybe the chocolates could be a little fattening, but she deserves a sweet treat on Valentine’s Day.
Rich Clark, a member of the Men of A-Chord, says Singing Valentines will be delivered at home, work, a restaurant, or anywhere else throughout the Rio Grande Valley for only $35, on Feb. 14. He says the Valentines are perfect for not only your sweetheart, but also for a parent, child, care provider, employees, support staff or customers. Part of the proceeds from the Singing Valentines will contribute to a post-secondary RGV music scholarship. To reserve your Singing Valentine quartet, call Rich at 626-807-0597.
