Best of Show 2014 At the 2014 RGV Quilt Guild Show, the most coveted award – Best of Show – was awarded to Gerald Brauer, who created the huge “Amazon Star.” This quilt also earned first place in the Large Bed Quilt Division.

By Kathy Olivarez Many people think of the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild as a group of ladies who get together once a year to display the quilts they have made. But, while they do put on a fabulous annual quilt show, there is so much more to the quilt guild than that. The guild is active all year long. With over 250 members in eight sewing bees across the Valley, many of the ladies (and some men) get together to sew, exchange patterns and ideas and do charitable work throughout the year. In the winter season, the number of people in each group grows to include quilters from 25 different states and three Canadian provinces. Only 40 percent of the members are full time residents of the Valley and some of them are former Winter Texans who decided to make Texas a permanent home. The quilt guild holds monthly meetings year round. At every meeting a member of the guild presents a skill they have mastered others may not know how to do. Re-

cently, Sharon De Garimore demonstrated how to use hand carved stamps in quilting. According to Guild President Carla Mewhinney, when the numbers are larger during Winter Texan season, a nationally recognized quilter is brought in to make a presentation at their meeting and to teach workshops on a different day while he or she is here. Some bring trunk shows that include a variety of the best quilts they have made and display them so guild members can see the techniques used and ask questions. If there is a special technique being displayed, the demonstration class may teach the guild members how to do that technique during the upcoming class. Others may have trunks of antique quilts and tell the story of the pattern and when and where the quilt was made. Military Quilts According to Deb Blackbourn, who is in charge of the program along with Mary

From pg. 1 On Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., live entertainment takes place at the Leo Peña Placita Park on N. Conway in downtown Mission. The show’s producer, Rich Bellert, will emcee the event and recite his legendary Cowboy Poetry throughout the day. This year’s entertainers will feature classic country music sprinkled with comedy throughout the afternoon. The entertainment line-up includes Bob Dolle & Friends, Lindley Creek, Jay & Tammy Roy, South Texas Whiskey Band, Wade Benson/Teresa Bowe Landry, Terry Smith and David Church. Bob Dolle & Friends Bob Wills left an incredible mark on country and western music across five decades and has been an influence to many country music artists. A top notch fiddler, songwriter, and bandleader of his Texas Playboys, Wills blazed a trail from the 1920’s onward with his innovative style of up-tempo, dance-beat swing music, which combines elements of bluegrass, jazz, blues, and Texas folk music. Bob Dolle & Friends are doing a tribute to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys at the Winter Texan Fiesta. Bob Dolle is a highly talented musician playing the keyboard piano and fiddle. Dolle is known for his tribute shows to Bob Wills and has associated himself with expert musicians who produce the Bob Wills sound. Joining him at the “Fiesta” will be the renowned fiddler player Wade Landry, Fred King playing bass guitar, Don Salmond on the drums, Joe Walenta on rhythm guitar, and Lefty Schrage on steel guitar. Dolle was a member of the Texas Travelers Band from San Marcos when he was inducted into the Texas Swing Hall of Fame in 1999. He is also a member of the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in Seattle, the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest in Oklahoma City, and the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in Sacramento. Lindley Creek Lindley Creek is an acoustic family band showcasing beautiful, traditional

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Lindley Creek country, bluegrass, gospel, and oldies music. Audiences connect to their soulful, soaring lead vocals, soothing family harmonies, intricate instrumental breaks, with original songwriting presenting compelling music and a fun-filled family show. Their country harmonies are inspirational and infuse the audience with joy during their up-beat, family-friendly performances. Independent, pioneering and faithful, the family performs throughout the Ozarks and around the US and Canada at fairs, festivals, community and performing arts centers, churches, concerts series, and active senior living RV parks. Lindley Creek has performed regularly since 2003 at venues such as Silver Dollar City in Branson, and were featured at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia performing to over 4000. Family members are Jase; who plays fiddle, saxophone, and also sings lead and harmony vocals. Now age 20, he began violin lessons at five. Jase’s sister, Katie, plays mandolin, octave mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. She also sings lead and harmony vocals. Kathie, the mother, plays rhythm guitar, sings lead and joins in the harmony as well. She began singing in church and played in the high school band, writing songs since 2005. Kathie is also responsible for staging the shows and maintaining the website and the family wardrobe. John; the family’s patriarch, holds down the group’s solid rhythm on bass, drives the bus and keeps the family safe on the road. See MEGA FIESTA pg. 4

From pg. 3 Jay & Tammy Roy Jay & Tammy Roy are two highly talented professional musicians on guitar, bass & vocals. They have an unusually broad generational appeal, both eclectic and versatile. They select the best in various styles of music and perform an impressive repertoire of vocal and instrumental selections remarkably spanning nearly a century of American music. This repertoire includes selections from Swing, The Big Band Era, Classic Country, Western, Gospel, 50s and 60s Rock and Roll, Bluegrass and perennial favorites of the pop charts and artists. Jay Roy’s first recording was a 45 record in New Orleans on Bourbon Street produced by Alan Toussaint and Marshal Sehorn in 1968, including “Blue As A Man Can Be” and “Working For You” for TouSea Records, and to date the Roy’s have recorded 11 CD’s together. Roy has also worked with Merle Travis, Freddie Fender and Chubby Wise. In 1989 The Roys were featured on the “CBS Morning Show” with Harry Smith and Paula Zahn in a segment about RV’ing in the United States, and have appeared in Branson at the Branson Star Theater. The Roy’s have been recognized for their superb talent with numerous awards, including F.A.M.E. (Families Advocating Moral Entertainment), in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 at The Wahoo Country Music Show, Wahoo NB they won the 2010 Directors Choice Award, in 2013 were inducted into the Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame, on April 17, 2015 were given The Golden Infinity Award for Master Musicians at the Gatesville Hall of Fame Show in Gatesville, Texas with many more awards too numerous to mention. The Roys are seen regularly on the nationally televised RFD-TV network on the Midwest Country Show, having appeared there annually since 2011 with their next scheduled appearance on Oct. 1. South Texas Whiskey Band The South Texas Whiskey Band is beginning their fifth year as a show & dance band in the Rio Grande Valley. While on the surface this may appear pointing to inexperience, nothing could be further from the truth. Eldon Hardekopf, the band’s leader and steel guitar player, has more than 30 years of experience as a musician and band leader in Iowa. He has won many awards for singing and playing at various music festivals in Iowa and Nebraska. Hardekopf learned long ago the secret to producing good music is to surround yourself with excellent musicians, and his band includes some of the Best in the Valley. Dale Eichor, born in Casey, Iowa is the rhythm guitar player and is well known throughout Iowa as a country music DJ for more than 50 years. Jay Kelly, from Atkinson, Neb. is an award-winning fiddle and guitar player since 1950 and is a member of the NTCMA Hall of Fame. He has backed Leona & Ron Williams, Jet Williams, Cindy Cash,

George Hamilton IV and Terry Smith, and has won numerous guitar picking, fiddle and singing contests. Bruce Wutzke plays electric bass, and has been named a member of F.A.M.E. twice and has backed Hank Thompson, JoAnne Cash and other country music notables. Dwayne Johnson is a self-taught drummer, beginning in Alaska in 1946 while in the Air Force, which lead to playing on USAF tours throughout the country. Wade Benson/Teresa Bowe Landry Wade Benson Landry is a Master of The Fiddle, having won the title of “Louisiana State Fiddle Champion” twice as he made his way to Nashville where he became a featured performer with some of the greats in Country Music such a Jimmy C. Newman, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, The Oak Ridge Boys and many others. His appearances include The Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall, and The Wembly Country Music Festival in London. Landry is a native Cajun from Abbeville, La. who has thrilled millions with his high fiddle style and ability to touch the hearts of his audience with his warm personality leading to countless TV appearances including the “CMA’s Award Show, NBC’s Tonight Show, Reach for The Stars with Bob Hope, and two appearances on TV’s History Channel’s “Cajun Pawn Stars”. Appearing with Wade at the Winter Texan Fiesta is his wife Teresa. Teresa has backed up many Grand Ole Opry Stars;

they appear at Branson’s Central Theatre in their own show “The Gumbo Show.” Terry Smith Terry Smith is a “Songwriter and Singer with a Different Touch.” Smith has written songs for a wide range of audiences he says without exaggeration. “I’ve pitched songs to everyone from the country artists of the day to the Texas Rangers baseball team and Captain Kangaroo.” Many a full-time songwriter has a smaller catalogue than Terry, whose file cabinet holds over 2000 songs—“the good, the bad, and the ugly”— as he sums them up. As a singer, Terry has steadily built a following over the years in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. After retiring from teaching, Terry began to pursue in earnest his love of songwriting and singing country music. His first album was a country gospel project, “Look at My Hands” in 1979, which features his initial version of “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” a song featured twice in the movie “The Apostle” and included on the film’s soundtrack CD. The song was heard in its entirety at the close of “Ring of Fire,” a TV movie based on the life of June Carter Cash, which debuted in the spring of 2013. “Jordan” has been recorded close to 300 times by many different artists, including Ernie Ashworth of Grand Ole Opry fame, as well as the Statler Brothers on their album “Amen.” In the spring of 1999 June Carter Cash released “Press On,” her first solo album in over 24 years, on which she and Johnny Cash re-recorded “Far Side Banks

of Jordan.” “Press On” won a Grammy in 2000. Terry has written songs that were recorded by well-known country music artists such as Kitty Wells, Chris LeDoux, The Oak Ridge Boys, Daniel O’Donnell, Kris Kristofferson, Patty Loveless, George Hamilton IV, Allison Krauss, Roy Acuff, Jimmy Fortune, and many more. Terry is a member of the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame and was voted Traditional Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year In 1995 and 1996. Smith has released thirteen albums to date. His newest project, “The Second Time Around,” was recorded in January of 2015, and includes

Terry Smith

fifteen of Terry’s songs first cut by other artists. One of Terry’s popular CDs, cut in 2001, is entitled “Spokes in The Wheel,” an album that focuses on the various kinds of songs Terry writes ballads, novelty, honkytonk, story songs, inspirational, and gospel. Terry will be appearing with his Quilted Country Band for the first time ever at the 2016 Winter Texan Fiesta. The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Mission, is proud to feature this world-class performer. David Church David Church, well known RFD-TV personality will be making a guest appearance at the Winter Texan Fiesta during the pre-show event beginning shortly after 12 noon, Saturday, Feb. 13. No tribute artist sounds more like Hank Williams than David Church, and he will be doing a tribute to Hank Williams. David Church is from Lancaster, Ohio and has been performing since he was a youngster, growing up in a musical family. Church with his natural ability to sing in the Hank Williams style and sound, is the most requested artist on the RFD-TV network Midwest Country Show originating from the Midwest Country Theatre in Sandstone, MN. Appearing with Church at the Winter Texan Fiesta will be his wife Terri Lisa and the “Straight Up Country Band. FEBRUARY 4, 2016 WINTER TEXAN TIMES not have them to give. However, they are ly used QUILT SHOW prepared this year with the quilts awaiting theft.”

From pg. 1 Jo Havertape, the Military Quilt donations made by the guild and its bees is a very big part of the guild’s activities. The theme of this year’s show is “A Salute to Heroes.” This year there will be six quilts given to people in active military or who are retired as a thank you for their service. Several years ago, the guild was sending the quilts they made north to San Antonio or to Fort Hood to be given away, but when Blackbourn and Havertape took the program over, they did a little research and found there were over 100,000 veterans in the Rio Grande Valley and decided the quilts needed to remain here. Blackbourn said the Guild does not limit their definition of hero to fighting soldiers overseas but also includes people working in law enforcement, fire protection, homeland security, Border Patrol, FBI, EMS and other people who protect the people of our country. She referred to these people as “everyday angels in disguise” Other Quilt Donations The Guild often makes donations to women’s shelters and hospitals especially the neonatal units for babies. Last year, they spent 14,000 hours making 3,400 items with value of $102,000 that were donated in the local community. They received a call from the Salvation Army requesting 50 to 60 quilts for homeless veterans. Because of the timing, the Guild did

a call from the Salvation Army. Quilt Show Moves to SPI This year the RGV Quilt Guild Show will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center, located at 7355 Padre Blvd., on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $10 for one day or $15 for both days. Appearing at this year’s show is Melinda Bula, a nationally known quilter renowned for applique art quilts with gorgeous flowers on them. She will be giving classes demonstrating the Bird of Paradise flower from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday she will present a lecture and a trunk show. A quilt appraiser will also be at the show. People with antique quilts that have been handed down from family members can bring them in for evaluation even if they themselves do not quilt. “People don’t realize how valuable some quilts are,” Mewhinney explained. “The appraiser looks at the age of the antique quilts, the patterns, the workmanship and the condition of the quilt to make an evaluation. Some people are surprised to discover how valuable their quilts are.” “This year’s Opportunity Quilt, which is to be raffled at the show has been evaluated and is worth $1252 according to the appraiser,” added Mewhinney. “New quilts that have taken a lot of time to make and have special techniques not common-

FEBRUARY 4, 2016 BULLFIGHT

From pg. 1 “Truly Castañeda was at his best, fighting on his knees much of the time with both of his bulls. And his fans loved it,” said Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria bullring. Ibarra was not so lucky. A large, wellarmed bull picked Ibarra up and tossed him high in the air. He was saved from further injury when matadora Raquel Martinez, first lady in the history of bullfighting to obtain her doctorate as a full-fledged matador, got the bull’s attention, caping him away from the downed matador. Renk states she possibly saved Ibarra’s

life as the bull was considering going after him again while he was lying on the ground. He noted Martinez is currently working in the Santa Maria Bullring, training future matadors and was on hand that Sunday. She will be on hand for the corrida slated for Feb. 14, the third Winter Texan season event. Tickets are available at the Winter Texan Times, located at 1217 N. Conway Ave., Mission; and at Border Tire at Business 83 and Mayberry Road, Mission, phone 956585-8473. Reservations can be made by calling the bullring at 956-481-3300, with payment upon arrival. The gates open at 1 p.m. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp. Food and beverage are available.

Golden Age Olympics: Just having fun

By Doug Young “Some of our Winter Texans want to compete and win, but most of our contestants just want to have fun,” says Leslie Holland, director of the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department, which holds the Golden Age Olympics each winter. Holland goes on to say “We have more than 30 events taking place over two-and-a halfmonths, and all are geared towards our northern visitors.” And those visitors have been having fun for 36 years. Dave Lamphere, of Northbranch, Michigan, is one of them. “I love the competition. The competition itself is the fun,” says Lamphere, after finishing his day’s shuffleboard game on Jan. 25 at the Casa del Sol RV Park in Donna. “It keeps me coming back. Shuffleboard is a game where, I don’t care how good you are, you can be beat on any given day.” Dave and his wife Kathy, also a shuffleboard competitor, have been coming to the Valley for 16 years, but they leave each year before the final tournament so Dave can be back in time to tap the maple trees on his northern Michigan property and draw off the sap. Lamphere boils down the sap to make about 60 gallons of maple syrup each year, then looks forward to the next winter season at the Ranchero Village park in Weslaco. The Golden Age Olympics are much more than outdoor athletic contests. There

are chances to compete in card games such as contract bridge, pinochle, poker and euchre. Other people may enjoy the bake-off, jigsaw puzzles or Sudoku. For sports addicts, events include both indoor events such as table tennis, billiards (both 8 ball and 9 ball), darts and bowling as well as outdoor functions such as disc golf, horseshoes, a one-mile race walk and shuffleboard. There’s even an event for bird watchers. Entry for the first event is only $7, and $5 for any event thereafter. A T-shirt is included in the registration. Golf is another favorite activity for Winter Texans. While many of their northern homes were covered in snow on Jan. 28, Winter Texans enjoyed a round of golf at McAllen’s Palm View course on Ware Road. As Karen and Bob Olson of Bella Vista, Arkansas, teed off during the competition, they spoke of retirement as being a time when they had many more choicest to do what they wish. “We used to be morei avid golfers, but now we’re active in oth-d er things as well,” said Karen. “We’re int the drama club at our Tropic Star Resort int Pharr, and we do a play every year.” Boba chimed in to say, “We enjoy the golf andt we’ve made some good friends, but weo love both the competition and the golf it-i self. You always want to win – why elseo would you be here?” he said with a laugh. The Olympics involved over 2,500 WinSee OLYMPICS pg. 25

60,000 omelets and still flippin’

Dave Roundtree is back at Victoria Palms for his seventh season of flipping omelets filled with tomatoes, black olives, ham, bacon, jalapenos, spinach, mushrooms, green peppers and onions as the customers request. And, of course, topped before folding with lots of cheddar cheese. Just watching the show as he flips the omelets can be fun. Just don’t go away thinking his movements can easily be repeated at home. After preparing 60,000 omelets, Dave has had lots of practice, and he has it down to a science. Perfection! While Dave’s omelets are a big draw for customers who come not only from Victoria Palms, but also from parks in the surrounding area for breakfast, there are a number of other items on their Sunday buffet that attract visitors. Large waffles are made upon request and can be topped with strawberry or pineapple topping and whipped cream. Or they can be topped with both, half and half. Syrup is also available. They also offer a full breakfast bar with your choice of scrambled eggs -- plain or with bacon, ham or sausage. There are hash browns or diced potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage patties, corned beef hash, fried pork rinds in salsa, and eggs benedict. Look for oatmeal with all kinds of accompaniments, toast, biscuits, sausage gravy

and a full fruit bar with grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, grapefruit, oranges and yogurt. All of these items are available for $10.49 for the breakfast buffet. Chef Mark Arevelo said customers who want something special on the Sunday buffet such as silver dollar pancakes or a baked egg casserole can call one day in advance and request the special items. Victoria Palms is open for breakfast Sunday, and Tuesday through Friday. Dinner buffets include burgers on Tuesdays, meatloaf or liver and onions on Wednesdays, create-your-ownpasta on Thursdays, and a fish fry on Fridays. The dining room was filled with Winter Texans who were enjoying breakfast. Jan Brom of Magnolia Park said she came on Sundays for the wonderful omelets that were so reasonably priced. Daily lunch specials are $6.49. Phyllis Smithson of Iowa and Alamo Rec-Veh said, “I love the waffles. They are so good with strawberry topping!” When asked what his favorite thing about the Victoria Palms Sunday buffet was, Joe Stinchfield of Wisconsin answered, “ I like the whole (darn) thing! Everything is good!” That about sums it up!

Winter Texans show creativity building floats for citrus parade

Winter Texans often enjoy participating in local celebrations held in various cities all across the Rio Grande Valley. In Mission, Winter Texan residents of several RV resort parks have taken “participation” up a notch or two by building competitive floats to enter the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges competition.

It was obvious at Saturday’s parade our Winter Texans had fun with this year’s Citrus Fiesta theme, Citrus, Cartoons & Comic Book Characters,” as their creativity transformed common, everyday materials into delightful cartoon characters. Making the task of float building more challenging, these float craftsmen earned extra points

Senior Ambassadors: Diverse group makes beautiful harmony

By Brittany Asbury “Rio Grande Valley” has been the lead song for the Senior Ambassadors in all of the 24 years Esther Hewitt has been accompanying the chorus on the piano. As her favorite song, it leaps to mind every year she comes back to the Valley from Michigan. She and her husband, George, first came to the Valley in 1989, and just kept coming back. George smiled as he explained, “The kids couldn’t understand why we liked it so well until they came to visit.” The Senior Ambassadors became a large part of their reasons for coming back to the Valley in 1992, when a fellow member of their church choir invited George to join. George said he only began singing after he met his wife. “She was a singer and a musician, and the kids were too, so I had to protect myself. I learned all my singing from my wife.” No one could guess that George had no formal training in singing after hearing him solo “I’m My Own Grandpa.” After all those years, and the support of the chorus, they consider the members of the Senior Ambassadors to be a second family, and Texas a second home. And what a widely diverse second family the Senior Ambassadors are! The next seven people are just a small sample of the

members. Dick Corle, of Indiana, joined at the same time as the Hewitts, and has been a band and music director for 40 years. He says he’s “here for fun,” and fun is more music. He usually works with three instrumental and two vocal groups while he’s down in Texas. Bob Lemkuil has been filling in temporarily as the director and joined the Senior Ambassadors only two years after the Hewitts, in 1994. He’s also been di-

recting the Magic Valley Men of A-Chord, a barbershop chorus in Texas, for the last 20 years. Both the Men of A-Chord and the Senior Ambassadors will be teaming up with the Magic Valley Chorus and the RGV Band for the show “Music for All Ages” on March 4. Paul Hunter, originally from Missouri, has been a part of the Senior Ambassadors for 17 years, ever since he retired to Pharr in 1999. The chorus was one of the reasons he came back to the Valley. He taught high school for 2 years, flew jet fighters in the Air Force for 22 years, then came to Texas to teach high school Junior ROTC

29

classes for 14 years. He’s sung in a quartet, but prefers chorus work with the Senior Ambassadors, although he still sings solos such as “Old Man River.” Cameron Morrison comes from Saskatchewan, in western Canada, and has been a member of the Senior Ambassadors for 6 out of the 7 years he’s been coming to the Valley. He has a history of singing in the church choir, he says, “pretty much ever since I was young.” Joining the Senior Ambassadors “was a natural progression,” and he’s happy with having Mr. Lemkuil fill in as director. “Bob has us singing chords we never have before; we’re lucky to have him.” He believes the most interesting thing about the chorus is the diversity of the members. “We See AMBASSADORS pg. 32

From pg. 31 all come from major cultural differences; Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas, Eastern and Western Canada...” Ian Cooper, also of Saskatchewan, has been a member of the Senior Ambassadors for 4 years and has taken over scheduling for the chorus. He said he has five or six things, musically, going on each week, and has pretty much played in every kind of band there is, from marching bands, to swing, rock, and country bands. He also directed and sang in glee clubs, and taught some music. He plays quite a few instruments ¬– seven years of study on the piano, six or seven years on the trombone, and the six-string guitar – but his main instrument for 50 years has been the bass guitar. He still plays every Sunday in church, as well as with the Senior Ambassadors. Chuck Maier is 87 years young, has been with the Senior Ambassadors for six years, and has one of the most eventful lives in the chorus. He was “born in 1928, immediately before the stock market crash.” He grinned, saying, “No one can prove I had anything to do with that!” His parents, the McConnells, settled in western Kansas at the beginning of the Dust Bowl, and soon afterwards all six children were adopted by six different families. His bachelor’s degree was interrupted by the Korean War so he enlisted

in the Army Corps of Engineers for three years. Thirty-one years of teaching ecology, botany, and plant science at Wayne State College came after leaving the army. Yet he hasn’t stopped singing since he started in grade school. “I cut my teeth on country music,” he said, “and I have 2000 country songs I can sing from memory.” He sang at community meetings and barn dances, prompted in the musicals held in the school houses, and sang the Messiah and Elijah choruses in Emporia, Kansas. “Singing keeps me young!” he said with a smile. Ruth Roskam and her husband John have been with the chorus for 13 years. Ruth summed up the Senior Ambassadors as “just a bunch of guys and wives.” She says the group is made up of quite a number of well-educated people. She listed dentists, pharmacists, band directors, a tuba player, more than a few professors, and a physician who plays a hand saw. They sing a variety of music including broadway, classic pop, show tunes, and gospel, and currently have about 42 singing members. The accompanists include Esther Hewitt and Rosetta Jeffrey on piano, Ian Cooper on bass guitar, and Bill Koiber on clarinet. Members of the Senior Ambassadors invite people who like to sing to join the chorus. While it is greatly beneficial if members have experience in a local music group or church choir, no one has been turned away who wanted to join.

Nine Patch Quilts on display at Harlingen museum

By Kathy Olivarez Winter Texan quilt lovers in the Valley have the opportunity to check out the display of nine patch quilts from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky. that will be on display through March 5 at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum (HAHM). The museum is located at 2425 Boxwood St. The 18 quilts on display are the winners and finalists from the 2015 competition for the National Quilt Museum in Kentucky. The first place quilt was “Revolution #9” by Robin Gausebeck of Rockford, Ill. Gausebeck said the quilt was a celebration of her granddaughter, Charlotte. The circular star blocks in pink and green swirl around the quilt with ribbons on nine patches that float upward on the quilt. The second place winner, “December,” by Jane Zilmer of Mercer, Wis., is her interpretation of how blocks are oriented. The blocks are smoothing shades of blue, gray, green and brown, reminding her of a December day in Wisconsin. The third place quilt made by Nancy Eisenhauer of Belleville, Ill., was “It’s Not

All Black and White.” It features a black and white nine-patch background with a rainbow of colors spread across the quilt. Fourth place went to Amy Krasnansky of Baltimore, Md. with a flowing progression of nine patch blocks set off by exceptional quilting. Fifth place went to Tere D’Amato of Mashpee, Mass. for creating “Fresh from My Nine Patch Garden.” The flowers were Nine Patches and her basket is woven from them. Information on these quilts along with the other finalist quilts is available in a booklet with full-color pictures of the quits, and information about the techniques used to make each quilt at the HAHM museum. Anyone interested in entering the future “New Quilts from an Old Favorite” contest can request a form by sending a SASE to NQM, Box 1540, Paducah, KY 42002-1540 or by visiting the museum’s website at www.quiltmuseum.org. Upcoming themes are New York Beauty in 2016 and Flying Geese in 2017.

BROWNSVILLE – For the first time in nearly two years, the Gladys Porter Zoo’s (GPZ) mandrill troop has a leader. “Sugriva,” a large, mature, 6-year-old male, was introduced to the GPZ’s family of three other mandrills on exhibit. Sugriva’s role is important to the longterm health and well-being of the entire troop. In groups of some primates with no alpha male present, it is common for the largest females to become physically aggressive towards other members. Sugriva will not only bring social balance to the troop, but will hopefully sire new offspring. Mandrills are the largest monkeys in

the world and are also known as the most brightly colored mammals in existence. Males average 70 pounds but can weigh up to 100, while females average less than 30 pounds. This threatened species is native to the rainforests of western central Africa. They often travel in large groups numbering in the hundreds. This makes them easy targets for hunters with high powered rifles. Their biggest threat, besides being hunted for food, is loss of habitat due to competition from agricultural development and human settlement. For more information, please call the Gladys Porter Zoo at 546-7187.
