Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Holes Announced
Winter Texan golfers voted for their favorite golf holes in the Rio Grande Valley’s first annual Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Hole contest. We have tallied the votes and here are the results. It’s no surprise that among the Top Ten holes in the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Holes contest, five of them were closing holes. Three were the true finishing holes – No. 18 at Tierra Santa, Brownsville Golf Center and Los Lagos Golf Club. The other two closers were the secondary closing holes on the respective courses, meaning See HOLES pg. 18
Bullfight features world-renowned Matadora Rocio Morelli
La Gloria, Texas – Santa Maria Bullring owner Fred Renk is impressed with the down to earth, humble attitude of Matadora Rocio Morelli, of Bogota, Columbia. “It is special because she is who she is, so quiet and reserved and humble. I asked why are you so quiet and humble. She answered, ‘Don’t ever think you’re better than anyone else who faces death in the ring. The bulls give you fame and in one second can take it away. “She’s the real thing, the real McCoy, and she is fantastic, Renk said. “I am so impressed with her mannerism, it brings me back to see what I have missed with the performers the last few years. When she looked at the bulls she said, ‘They are beautiful, Don Fred; it is an honor to be here with such a celebrated man as yourself.” She remembers David Renk, the son of Fred Renk, saying he was truly an AmerSee MATADORA pg. 4
Winterfest at Schlitterbahn draws full house crowd
Dance like nobody’s watching. There was a lot of that taking place at the annual WinterFest celebration at Schlitterbahn Water Park on South Padre Island, where a large turnout of Winter Texans braved the cold, wet day to be entertained, sing, dance, eat and enjoy the camaraderie under the protective covering of the pavilion. Temperatures in the 50s, a bit of light rain and a lot of clouds couldn’t stop an audience from all over South Texas from attending the event to listen to some of the Winter Texan’s favorite entertainers: Tavie Spivey’s Rock ‘n Roll show, Jeff Gordon, Leslie Blasing, Lobo del Mar, Diego and Jason “The Piano Man” Whorlow. The event was emceed by Gary Crain who, among other celebrities, brings the voice of Gomer Pyle to life with stunning accuracy. AbbaFab, a stunning tribute to the music of ABBA featuring the sensational Anne Davies, Chelsea Faulds, Scotty Pearson and Nick Davies, highlighted the See WINTERFEST pg. 2

Valley Star Awards deadline nears
Kai
You have just six more days to cast your vote for your favorite entertainers as your votes determine the winners of the Valley Star Awards. The deadline to turn in your ballot is Tuesday, Feb. 12. Each year we ask Winter Texans to help us choose the top entertainers who perform in the Winter Texan resorts in the Rio Grande Valley. Now is your chance to decide who will receive the top awards at the annual Valley Star Awards Show, hosted by the Winter Texan Times and Robert and Billie Ferguson. We will tally your votes and announce the winners at this year’s Valley Star Awards Show. The show will be held Feb. 20, from 1-4 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort. A ballot listing the nominees for Entertainer or Group of the Year overall, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and eight other awards appears in today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times. When you fill out a ballot we ask you to vote for someone in every category, if you are familiar with the nominees. Also, See AWARDS pg. 16

WINTERFEST
From pg. 1 day of fabulous music. The group performed some of the greatest music produced in the 1970s and 1980s including monster hits such as “Dacing Queen,” “Water-loo,” and “Honey Honey,” Terry Hirschfeld and her husband are enjoying their first year as Winter Texans, living in North Padre Is-land. Hirschfeld, from Kentucky, said they made a list of “warm states,” which included Texas, Arizona and Florida. In the end, Texas won especially because of its low cost of living. Since they’ve been here, she said an-other reason they discovered for coming to South Texas is “the friendliness of the people – they are so nice here.” She probably made some new friends at WinterFest. She, along with seven others from the audience, joined Spivey on the dance floor and “jammed out” to “The Hokey Pokey.” “That was so much fun,” Hirschfeld said. “I haven’t done that in years.” Audience participation was a common theme as different entertainers took to the stage. Blasing, filled with energy, walked deep into the audience, standing on chairs, dancing in the aisle and attracting several people to put in some time on the dance floor. Jodi Strach and Karen Roof, who live at Breeze Lake Camp-ground in Brownsville and are from Missouri, danced to three or four songs and as they were about to walk off, Blasing convinced them to “show off their boots,” and performed two more songs that just brought more people dancing. Whorlow was asked to give a “teaser” to the audience, playing his piano and his harmonica – with the help of a pair of
hands from the audience, whose job was to hold the harmonica in front of Whorlow’s mouth at the appropriate times to the laughter of the crowd. Some performers took the opportunity to sit and watch the others. Entertainers are usually doing their shows without any other acts so events like WinterFest give them a chance to enjoy what others do, and maybe come up with other ideas for their future shows. “This is fun,” said Spivey, who kept her audience engaged with a variety of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. She had members come to the dance floor, had a music trivia game and, of course, did the full rendition of the “Hokey Pokey” to the delight of everyone in line. “She (Blasing) has a large following and they love her. “This is the biggest crowd I’ve seen out here and they are always receptive,” Spivey added. “It’s just a great thing that they have and they always have top entertainment. I was excited to see Leslie for the first time, and it’s no wonder she has won Best Female Vocalist for so many years, she’s exceptional. I’ve wanted to see her and I wasn’t disappointed.” Food was provided by the Shrimp Haus at Schlitterbahn and the lunch line became known as “the Congo line,” because of its length – but it moved especially quickly and those who waited in line were treated with cole slaw, hush puppies, French fries, fried fish and shrimp. “Did you have some of that food they had there?” asked Spivey, who was part of the entertainment for the third straight year. “It was delicious. It just added to a great day, despite the weather. Good entertain-ment, a great crowd that gets involved and great food. It was fabulous.”

ican icon. “I saw him in Peru years ago when I was so young.” “She is the best of the best. I know she’ll blow this place away,” said Fred Renk. Santa Maria Bullring and Ole Entertainment LLC present the best card of the year for the bloodless bullfight season at Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria, Texas. The woman Matadora Rocio Morelli is one of only four active women bullfighters in the world. “She displays complete dominance when in action. You won’t want to miss this tremendous card when she appears with huge bulls Saturday, Feb. 9 in the La Gloria bullring,” Renk said. Sharing the card will be the great Manolo Martinez, called “El Mexicano de Oro.” In years past, never have two as famous as these two ever performed together. They have appeared all over the world, and it has the potential to be the best performance ever scheduled in the Santa Maria bullring, Renk said. What makes it so special? The bulls, he explained. They are from the dynasty of Martinez and are the largest in size and horn that can be presented. In fact, they are heavier than the bulls that are presented on the Mexican border in Juarez

or Tijuana. Here they are not touched by picador or blade. They can only be fought once and from here they go to the PBR Rodeo circuit and chase the clowns for the rest of their life. Such is the great life we have scheduled for them, said Renk. Tickets are available by reservation. Call 1-956-481-3300 and pay when you arrive. Gates open at 1 p.m. with food, bar and entertainment prior to the bullfight. The bullfight starts at 4 p.m. sharp. Children under 12 are free. Ticket prices are $30 per person for sunny side, $35 for shady side, and $40 for covered ringside seats. Mario Ordaz and his beautiful dancing horse “Guapo” will perform as well.

Dave & Daphne electrify Valley audiences
The 2018 Valley Star Awards Duet Musical Group of the Year is back in the Valley lighting up the stage with their amazing performances. On one hand there’s Dave Salyer, proclaimed by many to be the fastest guitarist in the land. He’s fiery and his guitar is explosive and brings audiences to the edge of their seats. On the other hand is Daphne Anderson, whose elegant presence and voice — which also carries with it a splash of sass when necessary – mesmerizes her audiences. Put them together and you run the gamut with the bold and entertaining performance of the scintillating duo Dave & Daphne, who return to the Valley beginning Feb. 8 for their eighth season. “There are just so many wonderful people in the Valley that we look forward to seeing and meeting,” Daphne said. “Like we tell them at our shows, we cannot be us without them.” Their show is a mixture of fire and calm, of monsoon and soothing rain. Salyer will bring the electricity to the audience, blazing the guitar with “Flight of the Bumblebee” or the “William Tell Overture,” while Daphne will strike a chord in the hearts of those watching her perform songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Hey Good Lookin’” and an eclectic variety of other hits; the show takes the audience through the full range of emotions in way that only the best artists can do. “There’s definitely more than one peak to the show,” Dave said. “That’s what we try to do, to pace it so there’s emotion and excitement. We want to bring them to a place where they feel something in their hearts that they haven’t felt for some time.” There are definite moments throughout the show where there may not be a dry eye in the audience, with stunningly powerful tributes to veterans and farmers. “One man said to us, my gosh, this was my first show there and there is excitement from the word go,” Daphne recalled. “This is our 21st year on the road and we are blessed to have each other. We receive God’s blessing through his people all the time and Texas has been good to us.” Dave has toured the world with Barbara Mandrell, has performed for pres-
idents at the White House and appeared on countless TV shows. Roy Clark proclaimed him as one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet and Mandrell said “Dave Salyer is the best guitarist I’ve ever had. Daphne has toured with some of the great Southern Gospel Music groups of all time including the Bill Gaither Group, the Florida Boys, The Cathedrals, Rex Nelson and others. The Southern Gospel Music Association voted her their Female Vocalist of the Year. Her impressions of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn are spot on. It’s a show that will do more than entertain you, it will speak to you in many, many ways. Mission rolls our red carpet for Winter Texans
The time is fast approaching for the big Winter Texan Fiesta in Mission, as the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, City of Mission, Mission Historical Museum and Shary Municipal Golf Course all pull together to put on the biggest Winter Texan appreciation event of the season. Mark your calendars for Feb. 15 and 16 and make plans to come to Mission for the celebration. Folks have been asking when they can pick up tickets for the free lunch, which is provided by the Mission Chamber. C.J. Sanchez, Mission Chamber vice-president, has announced that tickets will be available at the chamber office, located at 202 W. Tom Landry, beginning Monday, Feb. 11. The number of lunch tickets is limited to 2,500, first come, first serve, and they always seem to run out each year, as this is a very popular event. “We want all of our Winter Texan friends to know how much we appreciate them choosing the Rio Grande Valley, and especially Mission, as their winter home each year. So, we are rolling out our South Texas hospitality in the best way possible – with a free concert and lunch on Saturday, a Winter Texan Golf Tournament on Friday and the Artesano Market Days hosted by the Mission His-
torical Museum on both days, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16,” Sanchez said. This year the Artesano Market Days and the Winter Texan Fiesta concert will be held at the new Mission Event Center, located at 200 N. Shary Road, Mission. The Artesano Market will take place from 12 to 7 p.m., Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday inside the Event Center. Visitors will enjoy an array of local and Mexican artists and vendors from various states in Mexico with products such as handcrafted textiles, jewelry, artwork, decorative candles, candies and specialty gifts. Several food vendors are expected again this year, as well. Admission is free. The free outdoor concert begins at 12:30, Saturday with opening ceremonies. The concert features several popular entertainers, including Bob Dolle & Friends, Kody Norris Bluegrass Band, William Florian, and Eldon Hardekopf & South Texas Whiskey Band. The Mission High School Mariachi will also perform. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and plan on enjoying a great show. To register for the Fiesta on the Greens Winter Texan Golf Tournament, call the pro shop at Shary Municipal Golf Course at 956-580-8770.

Mission Lions Club Market Days is Saturday
The Mission Lions Club is planning a new outlet for artisans, craftsmen, artists and small businesses to sell their products with very little overhead. The new citywide venue is Mission Lions Market Days. Mission Lions Market Days will be held on the second Saturday of each month in February, March and April, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the beautiful, newly renovated Leo Pena Placita Park in downtown Mission. The park is located at Conway Ave. and 9th Street (Business 83). Saturday, Feb. 9 will be the first Market Days event. The event will feature food, vendors, bingo games, door prizes and music for a festive, inviting atmosphere. The public is invited, and admission is free. Non-prof-
it organizations can also use the event to help raise funds for their group, receiving a special non-profit rate for a booth at Mission Market Days. Commercial booths will also be available for local businesses. “We invite the entire community to come out and join the fun,” said Mission Lions Club President, Adela Ortega. “We are going to have bingo games with lots of prizes to be awarded, music, arts and crafts items for sale, food and beverages, and much more. Bring the family out this Saturday to Leo Pena Placita Park in downtown Mission.” For more information or to register as a vendor or to reserve a commercial booth, contact Adela Ortega at 956-458-9066.
AWARDS
From pg. 1 be sure to write in your choice for Entertainer or Group of the Year. This can be any of the individuals or groups on the ballot, from any category. This award is open to groups as well as individual entertainers. “We are delighted to bring you the Valley Star Awards,” said Jim Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times. The Rio Grande Valley is blessed to have some of the country’s most talented artists performing right here in South Texas for our Winter Texan friends. This is a great way to recognize that talent. Every name of this year’s ballot is that of a top notch performer or band, and they deserve our support,” Brunson added. The nominees for this year’s ballot were selected by a vote of the park activity directors. Entertainers who are not coming to the Valley this year are not eligible. Only the top four nominees appear on the ballot. To vote for your favorite Valley entertainers, fill out the ballot in today’s paper and mail it to 1217 N. Conway, Mission TX 78572, or, vote online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Only one vote per person is allowed. No photocopies of the ballot are permitted. Voters must either vote online (preferred method) or fill out the ballot printed in the Winter Texan Times newspaper. Ballots must be received by Feb. 12, 2019 to be counted. The Valley Star Awards Show will be held, Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort, located at 1711 E. Bus. 83, Mission. Every year the Valley Star Awards Show offers a great lineup of entertainment that includes some of the best entertainers (we call them Wintertainers™) performing in the Winter Texan parks and resorts. This year is certainly no exception as we are bringing you some of your favorite performers, including Rusty Rierson, Helen Russell & Company, Tavie
Helen Russell & Co. Spivey & Shake Rattle & Roll, Kai, Gene Turner (aka Mr. Pickpocket) and the Williamson Branch. All six performers are finalists for this year’s Valley Star Awards selections. Show Tickets For the first time this year, we are offering a group discount for the Awards Show tickets. Individual tickets are $15 and groups of 15 or more get a reduced price of $12.50 per ticket. So, gather a group of friends from your park and plan to come out to see what may just be the best show you’ll see all winter. Our allstar cast of performers are sure to provide an afternoon of entertainment you won’t forget. Tickets for this year’s Valley Star Awards Show are now on sale online at www.wintertexantimes.com, by phone order at 865-253-2514, or at any of the following locations: Winter Texan Times – 1217 N. FEBRUARY 06, 2019 HOLES
From pg. 1 No. 9 at Llano Grande and Tony Butler Golf Course. These are some of the most challenging, yet most rewarding, holes in the RGV. Here’s a look at what our visitors from the North voted as their favorite holes. First Place: Tierra Santa Golf Club No. 18 407-yard, par-4 1901 Club de Amistad, Weslaco (956) 973-1811 This is the least surprising vote-getter of all time for any contest ever held anywhere on the planet. It’s really that good of a hole. This 407-yard, par-4 lets you swing away as hard as you’d like on the first shot. A great shot will end up along the left side of the fairway and long so you can make your approach shot to a tee the runs uphill. If you’re not so lucky, you’ll end up behind some water that protects the green. If you’re terribly unlucky, you could reach the water on the right side of the fairway and have to take a penalty stroke. This hole is challenging but rewarding to the player who has length and control. It’s a fairly large green but the pin is usually in a challenging position. Take a par and be happy. And if you have a bad hole, just relax, there’s a calming rock waterfall in the same water you probably just kerplunked your ball into. And who doesn’t need some calm meditation after this hole
www.wintertexantimes.com
Tierra Santa Golf Club No. 18 – good or bad, it’s nerve wracking. Second Place: Brownsville Golf Center No. 18 580 yard, par-5 1800 W. San Marcelo Blvd., Brownsville 956-541-2582 On a hot summer day in South Texas, playing 18 means just surviving. An 18-hole, four-hour round can be more than just exhausting. In 100-plus degree

weather, with wind that feels more like a hair-dryer blowing in your face, stepping up to that final tee box is a blessing in itself – most times. That’s probably not the case at Brownsville Golf Center, where the massive 580yard par-5 No. 18 awaits you. You ‘ll not only need to be physically capable of getting to the green in three (maybe two depending on whether the blow dryer is blowing in your face), but you also need your mental toughness. The
hole is a dogleg left and the key is to draw around the dogleg and cut off a few yards. Hit your tee shot too long and straight, and the hole is longer. Draw it nicely and you could leave yourself 250 yards out for a long, but possible second shot onto the green. There’s water on the left, houses on the right so do the “simple” thing, go long and straight down the middle. Third Place: Los Lagos Golf Course No. 14 140-yard par-3 1720 South Longoria Rd., Edinburg (956) 316-0444 This is a golf course dotted with rolling hills, angled fairways (always toward the water), difficult shots and wind that is only stronger when there’s a tropical depression nearby. If the weather channel ever golfed at Los Lagos there would be a series looking into why there are so many stronger gusts here than seemingly anywhere else in the Valley. Winter Texans truly love their closing holes, but this is their favorite par-3, and their third favorite hole overall. The pin is always in a challenging position on this kidney-shaped green. This is the course’s top handicapped hole and signature hole. It plays 140 but the wind can make you change your club several times and scratch your head until it bleeds. Sometimes the wind is in your face and sometimes it’s left to right, right to left, a knockdown wind....you name it. The hole is also guarded by water on See HOLES pg. 19

From pg. 18 the left and a very large pot bunker. Just. Land. On. The. Green. Now, that was simple, wasn’t it? Fourth Place: Tierra Santa Golf Club No. 4 144-yard par-3 Tierra Santa is clearly one of the most enjoyable courses for Winter Texans. Much of it has to do with the course itself – its layout is made for golfers of all skills. It has beautiful scenery (and we can’t forget some of the best food to order after your round). No. 4 is a popular hole mainly because

of a large landing area on the par-3 hole. However, large isn’t always good. Lose focus or let up on your intensity and you could end up with a three putt and, despite hitting the green, walk off with a bogey. However, stick it within a decent distance and you could be putting for birdie. Once again, big risks and big rewards. The following courses’ holes were also among the Winter Texans’ top 10 holes: Llano Grande Country Club, No. 9 Tony Butler Municipal Golf, No. 9 Los Lagos Golf Club, No. 18 River Bend Golf Course, No. 17 Palm View Golf Course, No. 4 South Padre Island Golf Club, No. 6 Tierra del Sol Golf Course, No. 3

Carving Out a Community
by Roberto Ontiveros With 518 attendees enjoying 70 tables of lacquered busts and ornate lapidary on its opening day, the 33rd annual Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers Show was an inspirational example of local craftsmanship and comradery. The success of the two-day event, which was held at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr, may have had as much to do with socializing as it did with Sandalwood. Jan Jensen, a Winter Texan from Wisconsin, admits that the friendships she has made while woodcarving are what keep her coming back to the Valley. “I get down here and all my carving friends are here and it’s gonna bring me back,” she says, adding: “I was going to say that this would be my last year …but I enjoy it so much.” Jensen, who teaches “old world style chip carving,” has written a book on the subject and recommends the activity as an artistic way for seniors to be social and benefit from the nuances inherent in the art. “I find myself going through stages,” she says, “right now I’ve gone through a phase of 3D stuff. I am constantly experimenting. Whatever trips my trigger.” Jensen, who delights in creating boxes, points to the mix of men and women attending the show to emphasize the across-the-board appeal of woodcarving.
“You know everybody seems to think it’s mostly a men thing, but look at how many women there are, ”she says. “There’s a lot of women.” One of those women, Desiree Hajny, is an art teacher who prizes the serendipity of woodcarving. With a penchant for carving jack rabbits and coyote, Hajny allows the wood itself to coax her towards her final creations. “Sometimes you have to cooperate,” she says, “sometimes you find something that you didn’t anticipate.” Hajny, who works with white walnut wood and incorporates blown glass into her designs, advises first time woodcarvers to go easy on themselves regarding their experiments. “Look, if it breaks just redesign it,” she says. “Don’t worry. It’s a piece of wood. Just enjoy. People worry too much and there are too many things to worry about it. Why worry about art?” According to Fernando Gutierrez, a Valley local who works with turquoise and silver, the annual event is a great way for like-minded artists to seek inspiration and learn from one another. “Mainly the people coming to the show are woodcarvers themselves. They are looking for ideas.” With 17 instructors and 141 entries in this year’s competition, attendees may

have come away with more than just a few new ideas for pine figurines and Diamond Willow lampstands. Jim Crawford, vice-president of the Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers, describes the gathering as a form of entertainment for the Winter Texan set. As entertaining as woodcarving can be for winter tourists, Crawford wants everyone to know that this activity is “not just for Winter Texans.” Crawford hopes that local Valley residents of all ages will join up and engage in activities that par-
ticipating woodcarvers have frequently described as social as well as serene. “Every park down here has a carving club in it,” says Dennis Horstman, who started carving five years ago and extols the relaxing nature of the activity. “Carving,” he says, “takes your mind off everything.” For information on Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers contact Fred Stenman, (320) 253-2132, fstenman@msn.com; or Jim Crawford, (956) 279-6013, whittlinsam@outlook.com.

New talent highlights 2nd Entertainers’ Showcase
By Henry Miller Country music singer Naomi Bristow “The Yodeling Cowgirl,” took a five-hour flight from Buffalo, N.Y. to arrive in the Valley to perform for nine minutes at the Entertainers’ Showcase held last week at Mission Bell Resort, then spent the rest of her time sightseeing. The moments that immediately followed those nine minutes of singing, playing guitar and yodeling was worth that plane ticket – and more. The second of two Winter Texan Entertainer Showcases took place at Mission Bell in front of 200 Winter Texan park activity and entertainment directors looking to book the best talent to perform at their parks for next season and beyond. Some performers, like Bristow, had a line waiting for them and when the whirlwind of negotiations were over, Bristow could announce that she would be introducing herself to the Valley with shows both in 2020 and 2021. “It was totally different being down there but it was exciting and new and I was just hoping people Magic would react to me and support the show as much as possible,” said the Ontario, Canada, native. “But it was nerve wracking. But the response was great for my first year.” Naomi welcomed all those in attendance to “come and yodel with me.” Not many could yodel, but many tried. Bristow said she was 8 years old when she saw a girl on television yodeling. She then taught herself using a “book and tape and practicing a lot.” For the second straight year, San Antonio resident Kainoa Kawaka, electrified the crowd – with nothing more than an intense energy and his ukulele. “And you all thought you were going to hear “Tiny Bubbles,” he joked. Dancing, jumping and even combining the Chuck Berry duck walk, Michael Jackson moonwalk and Jimi Hendrix guitar playing behind his back all in one song energized those in attendance. Like Bristow, when “Kai” made it to the back room, he had a group waiting to sign him up for the second straight year. Shelly and Darren return, but instead of coming back individually, the couple got married since last year and are now performing a brand new show called the “Shelly and Darren” show. Darren performed last year as part of the group “Daddy D3” and the couple are still owners of
the production company when they return north. They had the audience howling when they did their rendition of the opening song to Archie and Edith Bunker’s “Those Were the Days,” sounding remarkably like the popular TV show couple, the bigoted curmudgeon Archie and his “dingbat” (his nickname for her) wife Edith. “We’ve been performing together for 26 years, actually,” Shelly said. “We started singing at college.” Each year there are two RGV showcases scheduled for performers from all over the country to attend, between 30-35 at each event. Each performer gets nine minutes to perform and it’s during those nine minutes that the agent/bookies/entertainment directors will grade and write notes about each performer, hoping to catch the perfect date and bring them to their park.
Valley Men of A Chord The first showcase was held at Park Place in Harlingen and it seemed that the RV park representatives were much more conservative. Some entertainers claimed they heard that the reps were recommended to listen to everyone at both showcases before making their decisions. That may have held true as the booking room at Mission Bell was a hotbed of action and meetings between rep and talent. The negotiations even spilled over into nearby rooms. Several entertainers who performed at the first showcase a week earlier attended the second showcase, not to perform but to secure deals with those who may have taken the “listen to them all” approach. Now that the showcases are done, many directors will take to their phones to fill in the remainder of next year’s entertainment schedule and hope they and entertainer have dates available in common. Donna Sue Delisle was in an interesting position – always with the action on both ends. She is the assistant activity director at Enchanted Valley Ranch but also performs under the name “Trailer Park Patsy.” She was moving at full-speed ahead at Mission Bell, first filling out her park’s’ entertainment schedule and adding some bookings for herself as other park direcSee SHOWCASE pg. 30

FEBRUARY 06, 2019 SHOWCASE From pg. 29
tors called upon her. “The good thing is that I know many of the entertainers and being one I think I have a good idea or what will work at our park,” she said, taking a breath from booker to bookie for just a few moments. “Each park has its different “likes” when it comes to who you bring in, and you want to bring in somebody who will draw a good crowd and somebody that when the crowd leaves will say they enjoyed the show.” Eric Kearns and his “Voices of Legends” also had a good showing and was one of the few that had success performing with just performer, microphone and tracks playing the music. His “shtick” is his uncanny knack for imitating some of the great performers of the past, from Rod Stewart to Tom Jones and more. The ever-popular Punches Family, Lawless and Mae, and Rewind were just a few of the others that “caught the fancy” of those in attendance. Bristow said she had never been to something like a showcase. “It felt like I was auditioning, which, I guess I was,” she said, adding that she is finishing her senior year in college this year. “I had some friends who have performed down here and they told me about it and gave me some advice. It really is a terrific event but I still didn’t know what to expect. I just

gave them my best.” And her best on this day means a new performer, a breath of fresh air (which is needed to yodel) will perform in the Valley in 2020 and beyond.

Golden Age Olympics continues with Women’s Billiards
by Herb Moering “I just want to have fun,” said Lise Lemay, who was playing again in the Women’s 8-Ball Billiards of the city of McAllen’s Golden Age Olympics (GAO) on Jan. 10, being held at Eddy’s Sports Tavern in McAllen. She has been playing pool/billiards for the past eight years after her husband asked her to try it, because he wanted her to join him in the sport. He gave her the first lesson and she found it enjoyable. “I’m not that good, but I’m having fun,” said Lemay, who now is on one of the two women’s league teams from their park, Pleasant Valley Ranch in Mission. The teams play in eight different parks during the season. Bentsen Grove Resort in Palmview, she noted, is a major player, with three park teams involved in league play. Lemay gets in plenty of playing time since a mixed league was also formed in their park consisting of 48 players, eight teams of six individuals each to play on the six tables. But she was willing to forego the league play that day in favor of the GAO, which she has been in for six or seven years. The player, who is a Winter Texan from Rockland, Ontario, was among only a dozen women in the McAllen Parks and Recreation Olympics event. That also included her opponent for one of the match-
es, Carolyn Hasking, a fulltime resident at McAllen Mobile Park and originally from Kansas. Hasking started playing seven years ago at Eddy’s, helped by some very good pool players there, she said. Bettie Crowe, a full-time resident at Siesta Retirement Village in Weslaco, said she never had a stick in her hand until she and her husband, Jim, retired, which is how most of the women get started. She has been in the GAO event for about 16 years. Along the way she has won four medals in billiards. She, along with a park friend, Georgia Brown, and Helen Martin from Snow to Sun RV & MH Park and Charlene Moore from Casa Del Sol MH/RV Resort in Donna, all play in leagues. That includes mixed doubles, and the ladies 8-ball, 9-ball and the new 10-ball competition. Only Phyll Thackery, a Tip-O-Texas RV Resort resident from Missouri, concentrates primarily on GAO events. Crowe’s interests also include other sports and competitive events. In 2014, she won eight medals in nine different
GAO events, all of them either for first or second place. Her husband also has earned medals and is known for the washer competition, in which he was champion five years in a row. She related they play 8-ball and 9-ball in two park leagues. “Win or lose, we just play to enjoy,” Crowe concluded. Men’s billiards, which began Jan. 8 and runs into February, while the women are playing again on Jan. 24. All of the play is at Eddy’s on Nolana Loop.

Where the heck is Alice?
By Billie Rae Ferguson Forty four Winter Texans followed entertainer Leslie Blasing to the Jim Wells County Fairgrounds in Alice, Texas, on Jan. 14, to attend a benefit for Habitat for Humanity. An informative visit to the building site where the RV Care-AVanners were working on the house be-
ing built for Roy and Monica Farias and their five children was made shortly after arrival in Alice. The Farias family will also put in 500-plus hours to help build the house. The RV Care-A-Vanners are volunteers from all over the country who regularly build houses for Habitat for Human-

ity for deserving families that otherwise might not ever be able to own their own home. They receive no payment for their labor and cover their own expenses. The evening event included a dance and entertainment by Leslie Blasing as well as raffles, silent auction, and lots of fun. The Farias family was present and joined in with the festivities. The raffle and White Elephant Auction included
many gift items donated by the Care-AVanners, Leslie and other donors. Over $3500 was raised to help fund the current project. Leslie hopes to make this a yearly effort and invites more Winter Texans to join her next year to help raise money for another family to have their own home. For more information on this project, call Leslie at 956-761-4347 and leave a message.
