The fourth annual Chisholm Trail Festival created by the City of Donna honors Chisholm Trail rider Col. Pete Preston Ackley, an Illinois native who lived in Donna from 1858 to 1940. The two-day event will kick off with a Chisholm Trail Round-up Dinner and Dance on Friday, Feb. 12 followed by a full day of events Saturday. Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Courses FEBRUARY 11, 2016

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Golf is a favorite pastime for many Winter Texans while wintering in the Rio Grande Valley. With dozens of golf courses all across the Valley, Winter Texans have a wide array of courses to enjoy, and each course has its challenges and beauty. Most courses offer beautiful tropical scenes of lush green fairways lined with palm trees, as well as special features designed to enhance the beauty of a particular hole or water element. Of course, one of the things Winter Texans enjoy most is the mild winter weather that allows duffers to play all winter long. The Winter Texan Times recently completed the second annual poll of Winter Texan golfers, allowing them to vote for their favorite golf courses. A ballot listing the top golf courses in the Upper Valley, Mid-Valley and Lower Valley was published in the Winter Texan Times as well as online at www.wttrgv.com, allowing our readers to pick their favorites. And the winners are….

Since then it has hosted four LPGA Future Tours. It is a public facility with a par 71 course ranging in length from 5779 yards to 6771 yards, depending on where golfers choose to play. It features 14 man-made lakes, a gentle rolling terrain on the fairway, and some beautiful scenery for golfers. In addition, there is a 250-yard driving range with 11 targets. South Padre Island Golf Club Wins top honors in Lower RG Valley

It is no surprise that South Padre Island Golf Club, located at 1 Golf House Rd. in Laguna Vista, was ranked first among golf courses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Located along the shores of the Laguna Madre, it is one of the most picturesque courses in the United States. Hole three has it all with the water hazard of the Laguna Madre to the side, the beautiful palm trees swaying in the breeze, and the view of South Padre Island off in the distance. According to golfer Ken Bazil of Kansas, who plays the course three to four times a week, hole No. 9 is the hardest to play with a lots of water challenges between the tee and the hole. Wind can play a big factor on that hole. But in spite of its beauty, the course can be difficult to play. According to golf pro, Chris Meade, “When the north wind blows, the course can be extremely difficult to play. The course features 6,828 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Currently under new management, the Bernards bought the course in 2015. The course is considered to be a fun, family-oriented course. With several holes along the Rio Grande River, it is very scenic. Holes No. 6 and 10 have great views of the river. The course was

designed with hills to provide a bit of a challenge for golfers. There are no sand bunkers but lots of water hazards affecting almost every hole. Although the course is set along the banks of the Rio Grande River, there are no problems with illegals crossing as there were at another Brownsville course because the community is gated and there is no way for illegals to get out without detection. Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club ranks No. 3 in Lower Valley

Ranked third favorite golf course in the Lower Valley among Winter Texans, Rancho Viejo is a private golf course, but Winter Texans are allowed to play the course on Monday through Thursdays. According to Director of Golf Joe Powell, the course has some pretty challenging holes with small greens and long narrow fairways. To that add sand bunkers and water hazards to make the game a challenge for players. Powell said usually Winter Texans lay the white tees, while the ladies opt for the red tees. The gold tees are the longest.

Powell said Winter Texans like the course because it is scenic. There are trees, wildlife such as squirrels, and lots of birds. There are two distinct courses. El Diablo is an 18-hole course with plenty of challenges. The Winter Texan rate is $42 with one-half cart. Angel is the easier course with nine holes. The Winter Texan rate for this one is $24 with one-half cart. Groups of 12 or more can get a rate as low as $28. Museum announces winners of quilt show

By Kathy Olivarez Winners of the annual Mission Quilt Show held in January by the Mission Historical Museum were announced at an awards ceremony held Friday, Feb. 5 along with a special “Turning of the Quilts” program. In the Wall Hanging Division first place was awarded to Gerald Brauer’s “Star Burst.” Second place went to Jane Pronovost’s “Joel’s Quilt.” Pronovost said the information stating she went to a graphic artist to make the pattern was wrong. The quilt was made from a design for the band “Weems” and it was their leader who went to the graphic artist to create the design. Pronovost simply blew up the design and made it larger to use on the quilt. Third place went to Bonnie M. Hall with “Challenged Poinsettias.” In the Machine-Quilted Bed Quilt Division, Lynne Benson took first place with “Fire Island Hosta.” Janet A. McDonald won second place with “Batik Circling Reversible Quilt.” Third place went to Sally Brown Kosmider with “Four-patch Posey.” In the Hand-Quilted Bed Quilt Division, first place went to Alene Wanless with “Magic Vine.” Mary Sue Schaefer took second place with “Healing Stitches,” and third place went to Sandra Newland with “One Block Wonder.” The Viewer’s Choice Award went to Mary Schaefer with “Healing Stitches.”

Best of Show was awarded to Arlene Wanless with “Magic Vine.” Nancy Lenz, an expert in the history of quilts and how to tell their ages was present to do the “Turning of the Quilts” program, which featured 12 quilts with a variety of histories. The first quilt was submitted by Tom Sable, whose mother made the quilt in the 1950s was a grown-up version of “Sunbonnet Sue,” featuring the design of a young lady with her parasol rather than a child wearing a sunbonnet. The next quilt, brought by Nina Nelson, was “Strawberry Festival.” She explained that her mother, Rita Houghton, created the design and made the quilt. She and her husband owned a nine-acre strawberry farm and made several quilts with strawberry themes. This particular design appeared in Spinning Spool magazine in 1991 and Mrs. Houghton received $200 for the pattern. She gave the quilt to her daughter in 1997. The third quilt, owned by Harriet Amendola, was named “Mom’s Eight Children.” Her mother, Gladys Brown Rall, pieced the quilt top in the 1970s from material she used to sew clothes for her children. They had suits, skirts, slacks and jackets made from the materials in the quilt. A fourth quilt, owned by Sally Brown Kosmider was purchased at Deseret Industries in Idaho in 2015. The fifth quilt owned by Sally Brown

Kosmider, was a Triple Irish Chain given to her by her daughter. Linda Norwood brought the sixth quilt called “Cindy’s Antherium.” It is a Hawaiian wall hanging made by her mother, Marjorie Kerr of Denver. An original pattern, her mother called it a Hapa Haole quilt or half white or non-Hawaiian. Hawaiian quilts usually represent plants, flowers or royal symbols. The design is of a bright color on a lighter background. The material is folded in fourths or eighths, cut out and basted on the background. Some Hawaiian quilts have a “lei” or border on the edge that is also appliqued. The quilting used around the motifs is echo quilting. Norwood also provided the seventh quilt, also a Hawaiian design called Kipu’upu’u, which means chilly wind or rain. This queen-size quilt in blues features a design that was based on by hand and then needle-folded appliqued to the quilt. Norwood said her mother loved the Hawaiian designs and taught quilting using Hawaiian designs for several years in Colorado. The eighth quilt was rescued from a garage sale for $10 by Lois Frederick. Lenz said the design was a version of a nine patch. Quilt nine used a Lincoln design popular in Illinois. It is a replica of a quilt design dating back to the 1800s that Lincoln might have used. Nancy Hanks was known to

have made a quilt for him. It featured stars and squares. Quilt ten was another Triple Irish Chain quilt from a pattern dating back to the 1930s. It was hand-pieced and could have some materials from the flour or feed sacks popular at that time. It was a gift for Donald and Alene Wanless’s parents, Mills and Veletta Wanless, who married in 1935. It was made by his mother, Elizabeth Kissik Barto. Quilts 11 and 12 were also made by Barto with fabric that is thought to date as far back as the 1880s. One pattern was called “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” and featured hexagon shaped pieces. The other featured a pattern of eight-pointed stars that is known to be at least 100 years old. As one man stated as he was leaving regarding the quilt show and program, “This was an excellent small quilt show.”

From pg. 1

The danger is always present when a matador faces big bulls that are armed like these five-year-old bulls will be. Mexico’s top-ranking matador, Guillermo Ibarra, was tossed and nearly wounded by the bull in a recent bullfight at Santa Maria. He suffered an exterior non-entry horn wound that will require surgery to repair the damage to his thigh. Such injuries are not serious when received. It is the next day when matadors suffer from the aftermath of swollen tissue from the injuries. In fact, Ibarra went on to perform a tremendous second act with the bull after being tossed. Big bulls are tough, but are so very impressive when they are faced by master matadors such as the upcoming event with Cesar Castañeda and Pepe Murillo. Matador Pepe Murillo, ranked among the top 10 bullfighters in Mexico, is a dynamic young man that excites the crowd with his bravery, fighting on his knees and sometimes passing the bulls while looking up at the fans, not at the bull. He is a true “Dominador” (dominator). Before the bullfight at 3 p.m. Alexa Michelle Posas, an exciting young mariachi singer from Roma, will again perform. She has wowed the fans at the last two events. She won a state championship in San Antonio, competing with hundreds of

singers for the top award. Mario Ordaz and his Andalusian horses will perform again as another special part of the day’s entertainment. When Mario sings, his horses dance. He was part of the Rose Parade two years ago. Gates open at 1 p.m. Food service starts at 1:30. Pre-bullfight entertainment starts at 3:15, and the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the Winter Texan Times, located at 1217 N. Tony Roma’s: Great Food, Great People, Great Place!

Hollow Leg, my 17-year-old grandson, loves restaurant reviews because it means he gets to try a little of everything. The day came for us to review Tony Roma’s and, to start, we ordered the Onion Loaf as our appetizer. Like a gourmet taste tester, he pronounced it to be lightly breaded, not to heavy – just right. Just as he finished devouring the Onion Loaf, the waiter arrived with the Spinach-Artichoke Dip. “Where did that come from,” I asked. “Oh, I ordered that too,” he replied digging into the dip.. Hollow Leg pronounced the dip to be very good and finished about half of it before I could get a bite. The fresh loaf of hot bread was delicious with their garlic butter. Bread hot from the oven – I could eat a whole loaf myself. While ribs are available in beef or pork, he prefers the pork. He chose a bleu cheese wedge salad with red onions and bacon bits instead of the traditional salad. And he asked for the fully loaded baked potato to go along with it. For an entrée, Hollow Leg selected the Steakhouse Burger with Sidewinder Fries. “This is a good burger!” he announced after his first bite. He took a few more bites. “This is a really good burger,” he pronounced. “I like the cheese.” The Steakhouse Burger is 100 per-

cent sirloin with a Cabernet demi-glace, creamy Havarti cheese, rosemary bacon, and lettuce, tomato and pickles. “Man, this is a great burger,” he continued to exclaim, as he worked his way through the rest of it. He convinced me. Next time I go, I’m having one. “The fries are good too,” he said, generously offering to let me taste one. They were sprinkled with seasoned salt and had a nice taste I agreed. I chose one of their recommended features, the shrimp and salmon piccata, which consisted of grilled salmon topped with shrimp covered in a lemon caper wine sauce. It is served with a side of wild rice and mixed vegetables. It had a nice taste and did not sit heavy after eating. On to desserts! We opted for the three-dessert plate with smaller portions. Hollow Leg chose the brownie with ice cream and raspberry sauce. “This is really good too!” he pronounced. My peach-blackberry cobbler was sweet and just enough after a big meal. My husband made his apple tart with ice cream disappear quickly and pronounced it delicious. Tony Roma’s is located across from La Plaza Mall on S. 10th Street in McAllen. This newly remodeled restaurant features an ultra-modern design, all new fixtures and furniture, and a large bar area with big screen TV’s.

Since that time they have traveled all over the United States and a good bit of the world having done tours in South America, Europe and Asia. Tupelo is an accomplished musician who plays six- and 12-string acoustic guitar, dobro, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, and a top-tapped tambourine. He also writes most of their music. Janey also plays multiple instruments including mountain dulcimer, bass guitar, banjo and a variety of percussion instruments. Both enjoy singing and most of their songs are

harmony arrangements. They specialize in contemporary folk music. In addition to their music, the couple is known for off-the-wall comedy. They also have a nine-inch clog doll and do some yodeling to spice up their shows with variety. It is a fun show to watch with original music and comedy too. Laughing Bird can be seen Feb. 17 at Park Place Estates in Harlingen; Feb. 21 at Bentsen Grove, Mission; Feb. 24 at Bit O’ Heaven, Donna; Feb. 26 at Oleander Acres, Mission; and Feb. 28 at Country Sunshine, Weslaco. In March they can be seen Mar. 1 at Sleepy Valley Ranch, Mission; Mar. 2 at Sunshine RV, Harlingen; and Mar. 3 at Four Seasons, Brownsville.

Illusionist Roger Wayne brings Rio Grande Valley magic

Illusionist Roger Wayne is doing his 2017 performances in the RGV. His past show was Roger and Lee Anne’s Grand Illusion Magic Show. Wayne said, “It was the largest traveling illusion show with over 10,000 pounds of equipment in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Having performed for thousands of people over the past 25 years, grossing over $10 million, we were very successful performers.” Wayne has a new RGV show for Winter Texans that features live colored

doves that completely vanish at the end of their segment. The show includes lots of audience participation, including a super hero act and a chicken act, and an abundance of music and comedy. A special attraction is the levitation of his lovely wife. The show is completely self-contained as he furnishes his own sound equipment, backdrops and lighting. On Dec. 31 they performed at Victoria Palms. Activity Director Karen Humphry said, “Roger and his wife were part of our evening line-up of activities. If his type of entertainment is what you are looking for Roger would be a great source of consider.” Last year, Karin Jones of 1015 RV Park said, “His comedy illusion show kept us laughing and entertained throughout the whole program.” Roger can be seen performing Feb. 19 at Lakewood RV Resort at 6:30 p.m.; Feb. 22, Bluebonnet RV Park, Mission; Mar. 1, Bentsen Grove Resort, Mar. 13, Enchanted Valley, Mission; Mar. 15, Tropic Winds Resort, Harlingen; and Mar. 17, Paradise Acres, Alamo. To book a show with Roger, call (859) 588-5569 or email him at rogerdespard@bellsouth. net.
