Bullfight at Santa Maria offers excitement
By Kathy Olivarez Winter Texan season on Feb. 22. Owner Fred Renk is planning another At the last bullfight, on Feb. 8, the heart-stopping bullfight as Santa Maria excitement began even before the event Bullring stages its final bullfight of the started when the first bull tried to climb
out of the chute and knocked the makeshift roof off on one of his many attempts. By the time he was released into the ring, he was furious and charged at each of the matadors and assistants who waved their capes at him as he ran around the ring. Chasing one matador assistant to safety behind a wall, he stood staring at another matador assistant behind the protective wall just daring him to move until another of the matadors attracted his attention. It was at this point that Cesar Castaneda, fourth-ranked matador in the world, came out to fight him. The bull gave him quite a challenge and it took a while before Castaneda could calm him enough to step in and take the symbolic rose from his back, signifying the kill. He received many shouts of “ole” from his fans who also threw roses to him signifying he have given a great performance. All bullfights at Santa Maria and at other bullfights held in the United States are bloodless; no bulls are killed. David Renk, former matador who fought in Mexico unBrave Matador der the name “El Texano,” said that even World-class matador Cesar Castañeda executes a beautiful pass, dominating the though the bulls are not killed, they are toro in a recent bloodless bullfight at Santa Maria Bullring. Winter Texans stick around through winter
By Luciano Guerra It’s been said that you only live once but if you play hockey once is enough. That’s just how members of the Trailer Trash Texas Hockey League feel about the sport they love. These dedicated hockey fans are continuing to play well into their 60s and even 70s. While Winter Texans are usually associated with leisurely activities such as golf, birding and shuffleboard, there is a group of Winter Texan men who don’t fit the stereotype. Two to three times a week they don their pads, strap on their helmets and lace up their skates and take to the ice playing the fast-paced and sometimes physical sport of ice hockey. As one of the founders of the Valley’s only Winter Texan hockey league, 70-year-old Jack Kingsley from Flin Flon Manitoba, Canada has been playing hockey almost as long as he’s been walking. Trailer Trash Texas Hockey League “I started playing when I was five years While ice hockey is not commonly thought of as one of the life-long sports, a group of hardy Winter Texans, many from Canada, compete three times a week on the ice See HOCKEY pg. 39 at Frio Grande Ice Center in McAllen. CrossStrung provides highly entertaining variety
What do you get when you cross a Utah State Fiddle Champion, the Utah Hot Fiddle Champion and a mandolin and guitar champion with Clog America cloggers who have traveled the world? Why, CrossStrung, of course! CrossStrung performs with precision battling fiddle duals, excellent vocal harmonies, and a variety of music styles including Bluegrass and Gospel to produce a highly enjoyable, high-energy show. This family harmonizes well when they sing. Sherry (Mom), Leah, Emma, and Sarah Cluff-Riggs along with Sarah’s husband, Dan Riggs from Utah offer a variety show that is highly entertaining. The group first started getting national attention in 2009 when they won a national contest and went to Branson to open for the Hughes Family performing there. Since then CrossStrung won a number of awards and performed all over the country. For the past three years they have been coming to the Rio Grande Valley during the winter season. Dan, who plays a hot fiddle with CrossStrung, has traveled the world with Clog America visiting Greece, Turkey, Span German, England Romania, Hungary, China Mexico and Brazil. He has played with jazz, country, rock and bluegrass bands. He is the Utah State Fiddle Champion and won a trick-fiddling contest in Arizona.
Sarah has won state championships twice with mandolin and once with guitar. She also toured with Clog America, visiting Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Poland. She studied folk music at Brigham Young University and as a student she traveled to Ireland and British Columbia so study Celtic guitar. Leah was a first place winner in the Old Time Fiddler Junior competition in 2009 and second place in 2010. She is a Emma plays electric bass but is best known for her voice and for the harmony she sings.
Sheri Cluff, who is the mother of eight and grandmother of 10, started her family band because she wanted something that would bring the family together and be uplifting and fun as well. She plays guitar, bodhran and Irish flute. Dan and Leah carried on a friendly dual over who was the best fiddler, while Sarah and Emma played and sang during first half of the show. Music included “Rocky Top,” “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Boil the Cabbage,” “Westbound Train,” and “Orange Blossom Special.” They also sang some gospel music
03
like “Are You Washed?” and “Amazing Grace.” Their performances are mixed with instrumentals that show off their state award winning talents and folk music or gospel that is sung in harmony Unlike many Bluegrass bands, the show took a sudden turn toward Celtic Music after intermission when Sheri joined the others and played pennywhistle and Irish flute on Celtic pieces. She also plays the banjo, guitar, and bodran and cajon (Irish drums). They played several spirited Irish tunes and then played “America the Beautiful” with a Celtic sound, which was haunting. Unlike other Bluegrass bands, CrossStrung creates their own style by leaning heavily toward Celtic folk music with Sheri playing the Irish flute or an Irish drum while the others play their fiddles, guitar, mandolin or sing. This is an extremely talented group of musicians who play exceptionally well and their antics on the stage are entertaining. Their harmony is great. CrossStrung can be seen Feb. 12 at Bentsen Grove, Mission; Feb. 13 at Bentsen Palm Village, Mission (4 p.m.); Feb. 16, Casa del Sol, Donna; Feb. 17, Trails End, Weslaco; Feb. 19, Eldorado Acres RV Park; Palmview; Feb. 20, Casa Del Valle Resort, Alamo; Feb. 21, Chimney Park, Mission; Feb. 23, Rollin Home Park, Mission; and Feb. 24, Texas Trails, Pharr.

Laughing Bird Flying through RGV
The first time Laughing Bird came to the Rio Grande Valley was March 2004. Janey had major surgery two weeks before, but they performed 27 shows in 30 days. Janey remembers how difficult it was to be funny when she felt far from laughing. But the warm welcome from the Winter Texan audiences helped her through a difficult time and put her on the road to recovery. They have been coming back year after year ever since. Tupelo and Janey have been performing and recording together since 1978, but that first tour of the RGV opened up a new era in their career. They began performing at RV resorts in Texas but soon expanded their winter tour to include resorts in California, Arizona and Florida. Janey is best known for the “red dress” number. She brought the skit to the valley in 2004 and has performed it in every single show since. “It’s a workin’ girl’s dress!” she says. Tupelo and Janey developed the first generation of this skit in Homer, Alaska in 1988. Through the years there have been many imitations, as seen on the Internet, or at jam sessions, and in park talent shows. But after 27 years, Janey is just about to get it down, and keeps evolving the skit year after year to See LAUGHING BIRD pg. 39

From pg. 01 on display including quilts, wearable art, wall hangings, mixed media and other items all made from textiles. There was also a quilt called “Osprey’s Nest” to be awarded at the end of the show. In addition to the quilts, two quilting supply vendors were on hand to provide material suitable for quilting and equipment used for quilting. The Green Grove Bees are one of the busiest quilting bees in the Rio Grande Valley Quilting Guild with about 50 active members. They meet each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to work on their quilts, learn techniques quilters and exchange quilting ideas. Each year ,they not only make their quilts for their own show and those to be displayed at the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show (coming Feb. 20-21) held at the McAllen Convention Center, they also make quilts for Valley veterans. This year they have donated 106 quilts to families living in nearby colonias through Project for Human Development. According to Blanche Teatro of Michigan, there are so many quilters in their group they frequently offer lessons in quilting techniques. One class this year taught quilters how to paint on fabric. Another taught how to make purses or other appliqued items. They also learned how to watercolor quilt and do string quilting. Sweet said on March 3 there will be

make quilts for veterans as a thank you for their service to this country. The Winter Texan Times was introduced to Deb Blackbourn and Mary Jo Havertape, who coordinate this effort. Deb said that 50 to 60 quilts a year are given to homeless veterans living in the Rio Grande Valley. Others are given to disabled veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. “We do it to say thank you to the soldiers who are willing to serve and preserve this country’s freedom, said Mary Jo. We appreciate the sacrifices they make.” Created by Linda Batt Deb talked about a recent quilting day that took place in to thank them for the quilts given to their Raymondville after they presented sev- members. It was suggested they sponsor a quilteral quilts to members of the American Legion there. George Solis asked if there ing day. On the selected date quilting was anything they could do for the ladies ladies arrived with sewing machines, cut-
ting tables and all sorts of equipment to make quilts from scratch. The quilts given to veterans do not have intricate patterns. They have large pieces with freedom symbols in the center. The quilts are made from start to finish that day. The material is cut and the quilt top is sewn. Batting is placed in the center of the quilt and stitched together. A binding is applied. With so many ladies participating, work goes fast and by the end of the day there are several more veterans quilts ready for distribution. The Raymondville day really stands out because the ladies of the American Legion there provided breakfast and lunch with a really special dessert. Deb explained that they could always use donations for material, thread, batting, and other supplies needed to make the quilts. “We really think this is a great project,” said Mary Jo. “There are over 100,000 veterans that live in the Rio Grande Valley.” Green Gate Grove’s Green Bees have a special field trip coming up on March 3 to Corpus Christi. Those who register to go on the trip will travel by bus to Joanne’s Fabrics and two other quilting shops located in Corpus and will have lunch at the food court at the mall during their trip. Ladies from other quilting bees who would like to join the fun can contact Millie at (231) 557-5318 for reservations if there are still seats on the bus. The cost of the bus seat is $40.

She is a charter member of the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild. The first quilt was a “utilitarian quilt” designed in the 1940s to be used by the creator’s family. It had a non-traditional bow-tie design. The second quilt belonged to her great Aunt Emma. It was made by her stepsisters and half-sisters for her as a wedding present. The quilting blocks were made from scraps of clothing worn by her brothers and sisters in the 1920s. The third was a turkey track pattern made by her Great Aunt Lillian’s mother. The fourth quilt was unique in the top was pieced together from pieces of suiting material. The fifth quilt she rescued at Ropa Usada and featured a dogwood pattern. The fifth quilt came from Helen Bleidrey, whose mother-in-law gave it to her as a wedding gift. It featured a double ring design made from clothing scraps. The next quilt was a “Sunbonnet Sue” design with an unusually large Sunbonnet Sue in the center. I was followed by a signature quilt, which featured four fans in a square with the signature of the creator in the middle. The last was a courthouse steps quilt top inherited from an aunt by Vernon Weckbacher, curator of Mission Historical Museum.

Mickey Gilley puts on Branson-style show By Kathy Olivarez Those who did not attend the Children’s Haven International (CHI) benefit featuring Mickey Gilley missed a fantastic Branson-style show complete with Gilley and all his hit songs, two talented back-up singers, Stephanie Hall and Penny Hardin Lodin, and his full Urban Cowboy Band. The show was created by Gordy and Debbie Wensel as a fundraiser for Chil-
dren’s Haven International (CHI), a Reynosa, Mexico orphanage this talented couple has supported since they first started coming to the Rio Grande Valley. Gordie and Debbie opened for Gilley with such old time favorite songs as “Islands in the Stream,” and “She’s in Love with the Boy,” which featured a video See MICKEY GILLEY pg. 39

They also sang songs like “Golden Rings,” and “Carrying Your Love with Me,” a song from their George Strait Tribute Show. “Lost in the 50s,” “Where the Boys Are,” and “My Way” were also performed. Betsy Chacon came on stage and thanked everyone for supporting CHI, which she said had been serving the children of Reynosa for 42 years. She went on to say there were 160 children enrolled in their school because many neighborhood parents felt their children were safer at CHI than in public schools. Then Gilley took the stage and took fans back on a tour of his singing career, which spanned the 1950s to the 1990s beginning with his first hit, “Rock & Roll Boogie.” He sang “Is It Wrong for Lovin’ You?” and said a new arrival on the music scene, named Kenny Rogers, played bass on that recording. “Baby, Baby, All Night Long,” and “Room Full of Roses,” which

From pg. 04 new levels of laughter. For this 2015 tour they are performing two shows, the “Red Show” and the “Green Show.” The shows are totally different (except the “red dress” number.) Laughing Bird recently released their 13th CD of original songs and has included a few songs from their new CD in each show. They have also worked up new comedy bits, one that includes a sing along. (And true to form, with very unlikely lyrics.) Janey is always looking for funny perspectives and has come up with a new batch of jokes for the two shows. Laughing Bird enjoys returning to the Valley for many reasons. They have made some good friends through the years. Seeing familiar faces in the audience and

Spreading awareness of the need among people who have the means to help is as important as presenting a big check to the orphanage,” said Gordy. spending some down time with them is a real joy and a break from being on the road. Laughing Bird commented on how the entertainment scene has greatly changed since 2004. Each year a new entertainment trend (or a new fad) storms through. But Laughing Bird has been as constant as the Valley’s wind. They work hard to keep their show unique to the Valley, growing their audiences and reputation for original comedy, strong vocals, and multi-instrumental skills. And they do it the old-fashioned way, playing all the instruments. They admit it is hard work, but once they hear the belly laughs and appreciative applause from the audience, they know it’s all worth it. To witness their energy and joy on stage, they obviously still love performing – especially for their favorite audience: the Winter Texans.

I was not good enough for the NHL but I did play university hockey at the University of Manitoba.” As Kingsley went on to explain the Trailer Trash Texas Hockey league was born out of a desire he and several of his fellow countrymen had to continue playing Canada’s national winter sport. “A friend of mine named Tim Cunningham and I started this league when I first came down to the Valley nine years ago,” explained Kingsley. “With the help of a couple of guys from Ontario we told everybody to bring their equipment with them the following year because we were down here and we wanted to play, but we didn’t have any equipment with us. Nineteen people did that and it just grew from there. It’s been fantastic!” About 30 or so of the better players make up the two teams that play at the Frio Grande Valley Ice Center in McAllen Monday and Friday morning. But the Trailer Trash Texas Hockey League is not just for former junior league or university players. The players whose skating abilities are not quite up to that level play Wednesday mornings. And as fellow league member Grant Laviolette explained, it’s not even just for Winter Texans. “We actually had 11 guys turn 70 last year so we’re looking for guys in their late 50s to 60s because we need to keep

this going,” said Laviolette. “We’re going to start losing players as we go on simply because of the age factor. So, for anybody out there that plays hockey and is interested in joining our league we’ll work something out. We are really in need of more players, whether they be Winter Texans or not, for our group that plays on Wednesdays right now.” Tony Callam, of Havelock Ontario, Canada, is a former player that has put away his skates and is now dedicating himself to coaching the kids in the youth league, the men in the men’s league and officiating at the Killer Bees hockey games. Callam explained that while the Winter Texan league’s game are not meant to be scored, the players are out to win. “These games are recreational, but that does not mean that they are not competitive,” Callam said. “The players keep score in their heads and they are very bitter when they lose. We have some very talented players who can still play, but they’re older so they don’t move as fast as they used to.” “We are also in the process of putting together an ice curling club and while we do have quite a few people signed up we need more,” added Callam. “There’s a club in Dallas that is needing other clubs to compete against so anybody that would like to either join or start a club here in the Valley should contact us.” For more information about the Trailer Trash Texas Hockey League call Tony Callam at 956-627-5821 or Grant Laviolette at 956-854-4291.
