Ballet Folklorico Alegría performance is remarkable

UTRGV Ballet Folklorico Alegría performances will be held this weekend at the University Performing Arts Complex

The experience of attending a performance of the UTRGV Ballet Folklorico Alegría is nothing less than spectacular. The beautiful costumes, the stage scenery and the professional sounds of the UTRGV Mariachi Aztlan provide the perfect setting for this highly talented cast of dancers to perform their magic on stage at the university’s Performing Arts Complex. This is where audiences go to experience the best of the best in folkloric dance combined with the finest mariachi musicians in South Texas. Audiences at the UTRGV Ballet Folklórico’s presentation of Alegría, a two-hour exploration into the myths and musical motifs of Mexico, are treated to vibrant visuals that pour over a cast of 34 dancers spinning out in Aztec ritual before shifting into the subtleties of Mexican-styled polka. Miguel Peña, director of Alegría for the last three years, acknowledges that the seven acts of song and celebration that make up this year’s show function as a form of education as well as entertainment. brings his own special, distinct flair to the music. The band works regularly on the “Cumberland Highlanders Show” and the newly added “The Bluegrass Trail”, both weekly shows on the nationally acclaimed RFD-TV network. Leading the band is Kody Norris, from the northeastern mountains of Tennessee. Growing up with mountain music, Kody began his musical journey around the age of nine singing in local churches. As his teen years approached his interest in bluegrass developed and at age 17 Kody was offered the opportunity to “fill in” as lead singer with the then well-known and famous Dr. Ralph Stanley and the “Clinch Mountain Boys”. Following this stint Kody decided to form his own band. At 18 years old and fueled with determination, hard work, and confidence, Norris took on the challenges to establish his own brand of traditional, hard driving, high, lonesome bluegrass. In 2007, he established a relationship with Dr. Campbell Mercer, who was the executive producer of the “Cumberland Highlanders” show, broadcast weekly on the RFD-TV network which brought national attention to the “Cody Norris Bluegrass Band” Mary Rachel Nalley from Bowling Green, Ky. is a seasoned musician, with the fiddle being her primary instrument. From pg. 1 This year Alegría has incorporated a new piece called Mexikatl, which focuses on the lives of Mexicas or Aztecs before, during, and after the Spanish conquest. Peña describes the informative arrangement as “a collaboration between scenery and lighting designers, theater and dance professors.” “Dance will help the audience digest this information in a very unique way,” he said. In a rush of spectral choreography and haunting corridos, Alegría illuminates a story that starts with colonial catastrophe before springing towards Mariachi-styled merriment. According to Peña, everything from the pyramid backdrop to the agrarian floor props works together to help the audience, “know more about the Mexican culture, to know the Mexican cultural tradition.” Peña said he is grateful for the support Alegría has received from UTRGV. The costumes, for example, are all brought in from Mexico. Each set of costumes runs about $5,000, so that the six different sets of costumes for each Alegría season, amounts to $30,000. The Alegria productions are highly popular among locals and winter visitors, but Peña insists that it is the Winter Texan patrons who are the most excited. “It is the Winter Texans who are always the most fascinated,” says Peña,

citing their appreciation for the authenticity of the costumes as well as the chance they get to observe unfamiliar customs expressed through dance. Peña feels the resulting richness of the show is due to the combined gifts of its committed dancers as well as its talented designers and musicians. Erick Perales, a dancer described by Peña as one of his best, is thrilled by the opportunity to celebrate his heritage on stage. “My family is from Mexico,” says Perales, “I am proud to show my roots.” According to Tirzah Claus, a dancer who also works on stage props, the students involved with Alegría are all in fact “ambassadors for the university” and are displaying “the color of culture.” Claus feels the work she does with Alegría holds a special resonance. “Being half Latina but raised in a household where Spanish wasn’t typically spoken, becoming involved in this production has helped me feel more connected to the pieces of my culture that I didn’t always have the opportunity to experience growing up,” she says. Claus is quick to point out that the very name of the show -- Alegría-- means happiness and that this feeling is expressed in every aspect of the production. Speaking of the Alegría attendees, she says: “We hope they enjoy sharing in the celebration of the richness of our culture,” adding, “and we hope that audiences leave See ALEGRIA pg. 9

“Nothing in my restaurant is frozen. I buy good quality fresh meats and produce every day for my meals,” says El Mana Cuisine owner Juanita Martinez. The restaurant is quickly becoming a favorite among Winter Texans and locals alike. Martinez serves variety of Mexican foods along with selections of American foods that are every popular. The food is well prepared. None of the food is greasy. The specialty of the house is the Chicken Fried Steak or Chicken Fried Chicken served with a delicious yellow gravy. “People have followed me here from other restaurants where I have worked because they like the gravy,” she says proudly. I took a bite of the Chicken Fried Steak and gravy my co-worker ordered. The meat was very tender! “What makes it yellow?” I asked. Juanita gave me a suspicious look that turned into a sly smile. “It is a secret” she said. “I don’t tell anyone what the secret ingredient is.” Tasting again, I suggested, “Turmeric? Saffron? Egg yolks? She just smiled. “I do not give away my secret ingredient!” Juanita serves a full range of Mexican foods ranging from deluxe nachos, panchos, guacamole salad, chicken flautas, quesadillas and several kinds of enchiladas. She serves many of your American food favorites including T-bone steak, hamburger steaks, chicken, fish and shrimp. They are served with homemade French fries that are crispy. Every lunch or dinner is served with a fideo soup, chips, tomato salsa and a “hold on to your hat” hot jalapeno sauce. She serves an early dinner special Senior Plate (60+plus) from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for only $5.99. For breakfast, Martinez opens at 7 a.m. and serves four kinds of omelets, sausage and biscuits with gravy, oatmeal and more. Pancake lovers will want to try the Pancake El Mana, two pancakes with walnuts, fruit and bacon on the side. For a Spanish flavor, look for Tocinos with eggs, potatoes, beans and tortillas. Or try Eggs a la Mexicana with potatoes, beans and jalapenos. Regardless of what you choose, you can be assured the food will be fresh, never frozen, taste great, and be economical. There were only two items over $10 on the entire menu. And that famous Chicken Fried Steak with the yellow gravy was not one of them. Next time you’re hungry, do yourself a favor and go El Mana for a delicious meal you’ll really enjoy. El Mana is located at 119 E. Newcomb Street, one block east of Cage Blvd. in Pharr. Is your shoulder pain due to a rotator cuff tear?

Amy Garza PT, DPT, MTC

Frank Garza PT, DPT

FREE ROTATOR CUFF AND SHOULDER PAIN SEMINAR REVEALS HOW TO ACCELERATE HEALING USING NATURAL TECHNIQUES

Do you have shoulder pain with any of the following day-to-day activities? Reaching Overhead? Reaching into the Back Seat? Reaching Behind Your Back? While you Sleep?

Dear Fellow RGV Resident, If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you surely know that shoulder pain can be such a menace ... It can ruin a good nights sleep ... and when you lack sleep, you get cranky. It can change the way you put on your shirt ... or for the ladies, your bra ... because it’s just too painful to do it the way you used to. It can stop you from enjoying daily simple tasks ... making you frustrated .. .forcing you to take more pain pills than you would care to admit. And for golfers out there ... it can ruin your game ... getting scores you’re too embarrassed to tell your friends are probably wondering why you even care to play! Is it your rotator cuff that’s the culprit? The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that run from our shoulder blade into the top end of our bone in our arm. They help keep the ball end of our arm bone centered in the shoulder socket .When healthy, the rotator cuff allows us to reach in all directions smoothly and without pain.

Dr. Frank Garza PT, DPT, Amy Garza, PT, DPT, MTC (Physical Therapists) PS-Call 956-994-8880 to hold your spot for the FREE Rotator Cuff Shoulder Pain Seminar on February 22nd You can also sign up online at: www.pure-physicaltherapy.com/rclanding PSS - Only 30 Spots Available...CALL NOW If you experience pain, weakness or difficulty during the tests mentioned here, it is highly likely that you are suffering from a rotator cuff tear. 1. 2. 3.

This first test is called the Drop Arm Test . With your arm relaxed by your side, tum your arm out so your thumb faces directly to the side. Slowly raise your arm to the side, then slowly lower the arm. Test is positive if the arm suddenly drops or you experience severe pain on the way up or down. The Lateral Jobe Test In this test for the right shoulder, raise you right arm out to the side by lifting your right elbow to 90 degrees, with your hand hanging down, fingers pointed to the ground, your thumb pointing to your tummy. With your left hand, push down on the right arm just above the elbow. Test is positive if you experience pain or weakness. The 3rd test is called Lift-Off Test The hand of the affected arm is placed on the lower back. Now try lifting the hand off the back without straightening your elbow. Test is positive if you’re unable to lift the hand off.

Now you may be asking ... can a rotator cuff tear heal and pain subside without medications, injections, or surgery? In most cases, yes ... but it depends on but not limited to the following factors. What is the grade of the tear? There are 3 grades. Which of the 4 muscles of the rotator cuff is torn. How old is the tear. TESTIMONIALS “My pain is gone, and I breathe easier and stand taller. Thanks to all my therapists that helped me.” Linda Been “Doctors told me i needed surgery. I’m so glad I attended the workshop as now I do not even take medications and can move my shoulder better” Gumesindo (Frank) Garcia

Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course

Tierra Santa Golf Club Wins First Place Valleywide Golf Course, which hauled in about 18 percent of the votes. Fourteen different courses from across the Rio Grande Valley received votes for the overall favorite course, Winter Texans all across the Rio Grande Valley – from Howling Trails in La Joya to River Bend and South Padre Island – were asked what their favorite course was in three regions. They chose their favorite Upper Valley, Mid-Valley and Lower Valley course. Then, of course, they were asked to choose their favorite golf course overall. “We’re proud of our beautiful course,” said course owner Ezequiel “Zeke” Reyna. “We’re thrilled our Winter Texans love us too.” They’ll have more things to love at Tierra Santa in the near future. Reyna said they are building a banquet center adjacent to the clubhouse, and will be doing See FAVORITE pg. 20

One thing that you notice about the winning golf courses in the sixth annual Winter Texan Favorite Golf Course contest is that, well, there are always Winter Texans at those courses. Of course, that makes sense because those courses received the most votes, but there’s something more than golf at play here. It’s not just about playing nine or 18. If the Winter Texans aren’t playing, they’re practicing. If they aren’t doing either of those, they’re enjoying the camaraderie of each other, maybe looking to meet someone to share a cart with or just sitting inside the clubhouse, eating breakfast or lunch and watching television. And for the third year in a row, Tierra Santa Golf Club in Weslaco won the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course Valleywide. The course, which ranges in length from 5,300 to 7,100-plus yards, captured nearly 30 percent of all the votes cast to edge out McAllen’s Palmview

Tony Butler continues to be a favorite in the Mid-Valley for Winter Texans golfers. One of the things that Winter Texans especially love about the 27hole facility is the option to play 18 or to jaunt over to the 9-hole course that measures a short 2,600 yards and is a par-35. Eddie Merlin, director of golf at the club for 16 years, said the Winter Texan golfers are more than just visitors; they develop relationships with them just like the full-time residents. “The course is in a lot

Palm View Golf Club Named Upper Valley Favorite

Several years ago, Carlos Espinosa, director of golf for Palm View Golf Club, oversaw some major renovations at the McAllen municipal course. The course didn’t stop there and that’s probably one reason is once again was named the favorite Upper Valley course by Winter Texans. “We’re always looking at ways to improve our course and improve our service to our customers,” Espinosa said. “Our Winter Texans are definitely important to us and we want them to see that we are reinvesting in our course partly because of them.” Palm View captured nearly 36 percent of all the votes case for the Upper Valley courses to tighten its grip on the accolade, besting Los Lagos Golf Club in second and Tierra del Sol in third. Those major renovations weren’t just a one-and-done thing. Instead, Espinosa and staff worked on the details of everything Palm View has to offer, from a terrific driving range and putting green, to changing out the greens and keeping everything fresh and new looking. Palm View is a par-72 course with a

Tierra Del Sol has sort of a love story with its golfers. It wasn’t too long ago that golfers just weren’t returning to the Pharr municipal course. So the city made a decision – it closed the course for a short time to invest nearly a million dollars. The investment has been well worth it. Winter Texan rounds are up and the golf course clearly doesn’t play the way it used to. That’s clear right from hole No. 1. Now a long approach shot has a much better chance of staying on the green since they raised the back side of it to stop balls from speeding off the green and, in many cases, into the rough. it came to golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley. However, after winning the Favorite Golf Course in the Lower Valley award for now a third-straight year, the secret is out. And that’s just fine with Jeremy Barnard, part of the Barnard family that bought the course in 2015. River Bend captured 32.5 percent of the voting to edge out South Padre Island Golf Club, which tallied 30.2 percent of the votes in second place. Rancho Viejo Golf Course and Resort took third place. With the most picturesque sights from many tees of the Laguna Madre and South Padre Island in the distance, the view at South Padre Island Golf Club is enough to get you to go back time and again. Located at 1 Golf House Road in Laguna Vista, the course can go from a normal to challenging course to extremely difficult when the wind decides to pay a visit. The Island course is no stranger to its popularity, regularly ranked among the top three courses in the Lower Valley. Like many courses in South Texas, the

wind alone is an ample challenge to the 6,800 yard course. When that wind comes out of the north, be prepared to change clubs on your initial thoughts almost all the time. The biggest guessing game here is how many clubs do you go up or down, the wind is that strong. Of course, location, location, location adds to the enticement of this course. 2019 Encore Tribute Concert Series continues

The Texas Encore resorts have created a reputation for bringing some of the greatest tribute artists in the country to their resorts right here in the Rio Grande Valley. This year’s Texas Encore Tribute Concerts bring some of the best and most exciting entertainment to the stages at local Encore resorts. If you missed the Beatles tribute, Paperback Writer; ABBAFAB or the Not Fade Away tribute to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper, you don’t want to miss the three remaining tribute bands coming your way. TAD Management in cooperation with Equity Lifestyle Properties present their 2019 live concert season in Texas. Tickets are on sale now for the upcoming concerts this season, including tributes to Billy

Joel, Elton John, The Rolling Stones and Jimmy Buffett. Feb. 13-17 on stage will be Jumping Jack Flash: the premier tribute to the Rolling Stones. Imagine walking into your favorite music venue and stumbling upon the Rolling Stones themselves. They’re all there; Mick is prancing and gyrating, Keith is ripping licks, posing with his trusty beat-up Telecaster. Charlie and Bill are intense as they lay down the backbeat, and Brian Jones looks regal as he lords over his stage. But there’s a problem; this isn’t London 1964, but rather at the Texas Encore resort near you. Take a closer look mate, it’s Jumping Jack Flash, the world’s greatest tribute to the Rolling Stones. QUILT

LOWER VALLEY

From pg. 1 ries will include hand-quilted and machine-quilted quilts, machine appliqued quilts, wall hangings, and wearable items. But this year several new categories have been added. The challenge for 2019 with the theme “Love of Nature” requires three-dimensional items on the quilts. Warner stated she had already seen several of the quilts to be entered and they featured three-dimensional items such as turtles, butterflies and sea horses. A style show will also be held where youth who participate in the guild will model the clothing they have made. Other additions to this year’s show include a cup auction and a bag walk with materials representing different themes on display. Themes include lobsters, birds, chocolate, teapots and beaches. Quilters will place a ticket in a cup in front of the display of materials they would like to work with. The person whose name is drawn will win the materials to make into a quilt for the next show.

From pg. 22 that signifies Rancho Viejo is close. The country club/resort/golf club has everything and Winter Texans know it, choosing the course as their third favorite in the Lower Valley once again. This course will lull you into a false sense of security with wide open fairways that usually mean there’s a dogleg approaching. Sure you can hit it off the tee close to 300 yards, but if you go down the wrong side of the fairway, you may find yourself no closer to the green on your approach shot than on your tee shot. Even if you end up on the right side of the fairway, more questions face you – go for it in two? Cut off the corner? Play it safe? The small greens make an already-challenging layout even more challenging. Hit the approach shot well or you’ll be chipping up onto the green and needing to oneputt to save par. Holes are also well protected by water and numerous sand traps. It is located at 1 Rancho Viejo Dr. in Rancho Viejo, Texas. Call 956-350-4000 for more information regarding this 18hole, 72 par, 6800-yard course.

FEBRUARY 13, 2019 ENCORE

From pg. 23 dise is an amazing evening with the No. 1 tribute to Jimmy Buffett. Buffett is the world’s most famous beach bum. He has marketed his love of beaches, bars, boats, and ballads into a billion-dollar business. He has sold more albums and filled more concert venues than most musical superstars. He has written best-selling books and has a string of successful Margaritaville store/cafes. Buffett’s fans are affectionately known as Parrot Heads. They are found in every demographic and walk of life. The tropical appeal and “state of mind” known as Margaritaville exists in all of us. It may be the lure of the tropics or some other “parrotdise”; Jimmy’s music can take you there, and so can this show. March 6-10 Piano Men: Generations celebrates the musical influences of Billy Joel and Elton John brought to you by the father and son team of Terry and

Not only have Billy and Elton written and performed music that transcends four decades of music lovers, both have done so, not standing center stage, but seated behind the ebony and ivory of an instrument that will forever define the spirit their music: the piano. Join Terry and Nick on this journey through the careers of two music icons. Tickets are on sale now at any of the four Texas venues; for tickets or for more information, call one of the following:
