Winter Texan Ambassadors Wanted
If you love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley each winter, you’re invited to become a Winter Texan ambassador. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing for country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, See AMBASSADOR pg. 16
Thousands enjoyed Winter Texan Fiesta
Mission rolls out the red carpet for WinterTexans at Saturday’s Winter Texan Fiesta appreciation event.
By Henry Miller Fred Mastellar has driven more than 2.5 million miles for Hart Travel. He said that this most recent trip from Minnesota to South Texas was the most difficult he’s endured in all those years. “It was rough with all the freezing rain and snow and cold,” he said. “There’s probably a wet spot under me because I’m still thawing out.” Mastellar and Ernie Hart were sitting on a set of bleachers enjoying the 80 degree weather at the annual Winter Texan Fiesta, held at the Mission Event Center in Mission. Hart Travel brings a group of people from Minnesota and North Dakota to the Valley each year. They stay at a local hotel and travel to the island and other events. This year they are staying for 16 days and Hart said they were fortunate to be in the Valley during the annual Fiesta that celebrates all things Winter Texan. Entertainment, food, crafts and more were set up inside and out at the event center as thousands of Winter Texans See FIESTA pg. 15
Pam Liston wins Best of Show at Guild Quilt Show
By Kathy Olivarez “Believe it or not, this is the first time I have entered a quilt show,” says Pam Liston, whose “Halo Medallion Adapted” quilt entered in the large quilt category won first place in the Large Quilt Division and Best of Show at the RGV Quilt Guild Annual Quilt Show held last weekend at South Padre Island. The quilt was machine-pieced and machine-quilted. It was custom quilted by Renee Darkis of Alamo. “This quilt is by far the most intricate quilt I have made and the first in medallion style,” Liston said. She has only made about 10 quilts in all, and she chose this pattern because she liked the precision and detail the pattern offered. The flying “V” formations representing geese in flight were done in three different styles. She used a stranger, a zigzag and a curved style of “V”. She felt the curved V’s were the hardest. She also did a “fussy cut” to get the medallions centered where she wanted them. The quilt was based on at 2017 Block See QUILT pg. 22

Jason Whorlow: Out From Behind The Piano
He’s a father, husband, son and brother. Jason Whorlow, known as “The Piano Man,” has devoted his career and life to providing for his family. Jason is one of those that decided to make a living at something that he loves. The drive and sense of urgency to make a living with his piano skills reached new heights when Jason and his wife were expecting their first of two daughters. The thought of having a career in music has always been in the back of Jason’s mind but was never an actual goal until that moment. “It was like a fire was lit under me like I had never experienced before. Knowing I was going to be a father made me feel I could accomplish anything I set my mind to,” says Jason. The only entertainment experience Jason had had up to that point was playing in church throughout high school and beyond where his father was the preacher. He worked in a factory for a few years as well as many other jobs that never could seem to fulfill him. Jason was working to live. He now lives to work. “Nothing brings me the same kind of satisfaction and joy as putting smiles on people’s faces through my comedic interaction and performances.” Jason now incorporates both his daughters in his shows in the Rio Grande Valley. This is a rare treat for Jason because the girls do not get to be a part of Jason’s shows around the Midwest where
he will be performing for over 50 weddings this year as well as many wineries, corporate events, private parties and other events. “People often say, ‘You’re so lucky.’ I disagree,” says Jason. Anyone can do anything they are capable of doing. It takes that first difficult, yet pivotal step to chase after a vocation you love.” Jason feels honored to entertain alongside some the best entertainers in the country, in the Valley, and hopes to entertain Winter Texans for years to come and is so grateful for the opportunity. Now entertaining in the Rio Grande Valley for his fourth winter season, Jason “The Piano Man” has been so popular that he was named the 2017 Small Band of the Year in the Valley Star Awards has been
Jason Whorlow at first Entertainer’s Showcase nominated for the same award again this year. Jason has several shows in the Valley. Dave & Daphne bring laughter and tender tears
By Henry Miller From the opening moments of the electric “Orange Blossom Special” to the passionate ending of “The Lord’s Prayer,” the Dave and Daphne show is a performance that will bring the audience a mixture of laughter and tears, and memories of yesteryear. (When was the last time someone talked to you about a washboard?) There’s not just one highlight in the two-hour performance from the Nashville duo at Big Valley Ranch in Mission, but it’s a sequence of highlight upon highlight. One of those highlights was a performance of Anne Murray’s mega hit “Could I Have This Dance.” Among those who danced to the tune was Wilma and Bill Northup of Ollie, Iowa. The couple have been coming to the Valley since 1998 and have been married for 68 years, bringing the crowd to their feet after the couple concluded their dance. “What’s the secret to staying married for 68 years?” Daphne asked. “Well, we’ve always been honest to each other,” Wilma responded. After the couple completed their celebratory dance, Wilma said that she and Bill love to dance. “We also do the jitterbug,” she added. Dave Salyer, proclaimed by many
to be the fastest guitarist in the land, is explosively entertaining on guitar, performing with rapid perfection tunes like “Flight of the Bumblebee” and the William Tell Overture. A carousel of different guitars and banjos were set up on stage with him. “He plays two more,” Daphne joked to the crowd. But I ran out of energy bringing them in.”
He also does a mean Willie Nelson impersonation, which is highlighted when he and Daphne perform a mesmerizing medley of Willie’s “You Were Always On My Mind,” and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The crowd responded positively when Daphne talked about how country music, like everything else, had changes over
the decades. “But Dave and I have promised to keep classical country music alive and part of our show,” she said. Then they performed a medley of songs like “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Crazy,” “On The Road Again,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and others. Dave has toured the world with Barbara Mandrell, has performed for presidents at the White House and has appeared on countless TV shows. Roy Clark proclaimed him as one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet and Mandrell said “Dave Salyer is the best guitarist I’ve ever had. Daphne has toured with some of the greatest Southern Gospel Music groups of all time including the Bill Gaither Group, the Florida Boys, The Cathedrals, Rex Nelson and others. The Southern Gospel Music Association voted her their Female Vocalist of the Year. Her impressions of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn are spot on. Their music is special. It takes you to places so far back in your memory that it will kindle emotions you maybe haven’t felt in years – or decades. Considering those they have performed for and with, they also had some hilarious stories to tell. Among those was a story about Grand Ole Opry LegSee DAVE & DAPHNE pg. 9

Swing Street Band to perform joint concert with Nikki Rowe Jazz Ensemble
Two different generations but one common love – everything that has to do with music. That’s exactly what will be happening at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Nikki Rowe High School Auditorium as the Nikki Rowe High School Jazz Ensemble and the Rio Grande Valley’s Swing Street Band will each perform arrangements highlighting their musical talents – and that’s a lot of highlighting. “We’ve never done this before,” said Bob Comeau, director of the Swing Street Band. “This is a way of getting our message out.” Started by Winter Texans, the Swing Street Band has evolved over the years and is made up mostly of active or retired music educators from around the Valley, including a few Winter Texans. Several of the musicians are actually directors of award-winning high school bands from the area and bring a wealth of talent and experience to complete the full big band sound. Comeau took over the Swing Street Band six years ago. He said that the band gives those instructors an outlet “to perform and not just teach, which is something of course they love to do.” Several of the band members are graduates of Texas A&M Kingsville, whose
music program is highly recognized. The band plays music ranging from the early big band days of Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood,” to the music that will bring you back to the days of your high school dances and “sock hops,” as they were often called. They’ve even added a little bit of rock ‘n roll to their repertoire. “We perform so many events that this is another way to get out there in front of people and show them the talent and commitment of these kids,” said Roberto Garza, director of bands for Nikki Rowe High
School. “We are looking forward to this.” Tickets are $10 and the event is partially a fundraiser for the Nikki Rowe Band, which will perform first and play tunes such as “Big Dipper,” “Wind Dancer,” “Honk” and the ballad “Samantha.” Garza said he hasn’t heard the Swing Street Band live but has heard recordings, saying “they sound amazingly impressive.” This is the first of two combined concerts between the Swing Street Band and a high school, the second event being
combined with McAllen High. More information on that event will be released soon. “My goal in bringing Swing Street to the high schools is to inspire these young musicians to continue developing their playing skills and to continue playing beyond their high school years,” Comeau said. “You don’t have to be a music major to continue to enjoy playing music. Wherever you end up, there is usually a band or orchestra in the community that will match up with your skill level.” Comeau said there are several types of fans that range from seasoned ballroom dancers to folks who just like to move around to the music at the Swing Street Band performances. Then there are those who don’t dance but go to just hear the music – just because of the big band sound. The band plays a variety of shows and up-tempo music with beautiful waltzes and even Latin rhythm sprinkled through the concert. “We will be providing the community with the opportunity to enjoy an evening of really great music from the big band era,” Comeau said. “Most of the proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the band boosters to support the Nikki Rowe band program.”

Minnie would change sthe tag to $1.98 so people didn’t think -she was cheap.” n Daphne commands attention without even trying with her powerful voice dand command of a wide vocal range. tAnd while she performs with that strong sound, she also has a sweet, tender voice ,that will touch every soul in the house, ras she did with a song written by Dave dentitled “A Little Hope,” the story of a kfamily that couldn’t have children but othen one day was blessed, finally, with the news of a little one on the way. e The crowd collectively snuck a hand, ra handkerchief or a tissue to their eyes eduring the ballad. - Daphne also shared an amazing story -of an accident that Dave was in, crushing ,his wrist and “splattering his bones” that ywas repaired with screws and pins and Dave sat in a cast for 16 weeks. h “If I hold my wrist a certain way,” sDave said. “I can pick up ESPN.” The two-hour show was an eclectic, exciting and energetic performance that
www.wintertexantimes.com touched the audience and, as Daphne said “took them back to a place of wonderful memories.” The night ended with “The Lord’s Prayer,” and a standing ovation. This is the eighth year for the duo to perform in the Valley. Their mixture of bold and light, deep passion and fun, fire and rain, is a combination that should keep them coming back for years to come. It’s a show that does more than entertain audiences, it speaks to them in many, many ways. Following is a list of their upcoming shows. Visit their website for any additions or changes. FEBRUARY 20, 2019 15 www.wttrgv.com
From pg. 1 flocked to the venue to enjoy the camaraderie, the great and varied entertainment lineup, the weather, and the deals from the Artesano Market indoors featuring many hand-crafted items and products from Mexico. The celebration of Winter Texans is three events rolled up into one big, twoday “Thank you Winter Texans” celebration. Shary Municipal Golf Course hosted the “Fiesta on the Greens” golf tournament on Friday, Feb. 15, while the Mission Historical Museum hosted the Mexican Artesano Market Days on Friday and Saturday and the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce hosted the Winter Texan Fiesta concert on Saturday. Carol Belscham was perusing the indoor market vendors and found something that caught her eye. “I picked up a pretty pair of earrings, butterfly earrings,” said the Winnipeg, Manitoba resident who resides at Canyon Lake RV Park in the winter. “I love butterflies.” This was the fourth time she said that she’s been to the Fiesta, attending with some friends. She and her husband have come to the Valley for the seven years, but didn’t come last year – choosing to vacation in Portugal. Gordon Schwitzer stays at Bit O Heaven RV Park in Donna and this is his second year. He had just arrived at the event but purchased a Mexican coconut candy. “It’s my energy to get started,” the Saskatchewan, Canada resident said. “I just started but this is a good event. I’m looking forward to seeing what else is here and to check out the entertainment.” A long line of Winter Texans waited patiently in line Saturday morning. There was one line for a free Mission T-shirt and another line for a free Chik-Fil-A sandwich lunch. Other vendors had giveaways and contests. There were also agua frescas (fresh fruit drinks), potato spirals on a stick, tacos, sodas, water and more for
sale around the grounds. The Winter Texan Fiesta concert featured a full afternoon lineup of entertainers, including Bob Dolle & Friends, the Kody Norris Band, William Florian with “Those Were the Days,” South Texas Whiskey Band, and the Mission Eagles High School Mariachi Aguilas. The uber-popular cowboy poet Rich Bellert emceed the event. Bob Dolle & Friends variety band kicked off the entertainment portion of the fiesta. The band specializes in western swing, 50s/60s rock & roll, and then classic country without missing a beat. The Kody Norris Show brought their rhinestone outfits and their high-energy bluegrass show to the stage and engaged the audiences with their unique style of music, two-stepping, fiddling and the electric voice of Kody Norris, mingled with some comedy to add to the entertainment. William Florian, former singer of the famous 60s group, The New Christy Minstrels, performed songs and shared stories from his two shows, “Those Were the Days” and “The John Denver Story” that he performs internationally and in the Valley. Florian took the audience on an upbeat musical journey of America’s greatest folk and pop songs of the 60s, with a smattering of Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, The Mammas & the Papas, John Denver and more. He actively engaged with the fans as the temperatures continued to rise on a day that reminded Winter Texans of one of the reasons they love the Valley – warmer weather. The South Texas Whiskey Band and the Mission High School Mariachi Aguilas concluded the day’s entertainment. “When we first came down to the Rio Grande Valley with our tour bus, it was for only three days,” said Ernie Hart, owner of Hart Travel. “Then it was two weeks and now 16 days. They’re already trying to talk me into three weeks or more. After the winter we had up north – and it’s still going strong – I may have to consider that.”

Red Hats taking reservations for 2020 Red Hat cruise
A Caribbean cruise for members of the Rio Grande Red Hat Society has been planned for March 1, 2020. The cruise will go to Roatan, Honduras, Puerto Costa Mayo and Cozumel, Mexico. Go with Jo is the agency planning the cruise that will leave from Galveston. Linda Howard the agent. Phone number for Go with Jo is 1-800-999-1446. Howard has recommended a final cut-off date of Feb. 25, 2019. However, there are only so many rooms reserved in each category so the earlier people register, the more likely they are to receive the type of rooms they need. Three types of rooms are available. Interior rooms are priced from $554; ocean view, $664; and balconies, $1526. Howard said the lower prices balconies have already been booked so the cost for a balcony has risen. These rates are per person based on double occupancy of a cabin. There is a $25 registration fee, an insurance fee of $29 for interior and ocean view rooms and $79 for balcony rooms. The price does not include shore excursions. Each person can select the shore excursions online once the cruise is booked or use the excursion desk on the ship. While prices of all excursions are
not known, Howard said the trip from Cozumel to Virginia Beach where the Mayan ruins are located cost $157 on the last cruise she led. There is no requirement to take any excursions. Each person planning to go needs to send duplicate information to Kathy Olivarez, via text message to 956- 331-9472 (cell) and Linda Howard at linda@gowithjo.com. Information to be included is the person’s name as it appears on the passport, birthdate, telephone number, and emergency contacts. Specify the type of accommodations desired. If there is a need for handicapped reservations, please specify that as well. If possible, please send in the names of the people who will be sharing the rooms together. Remember, husbands are welcome and several are already planning to go. Once the information has been received at the agency, Go with Jo will start the billing for a down payment of $259 plus the $25 registration, which will be required at the time of booking. Payment must be completed by Dec. 31. A Facebook page, “RGV Red Hat Ladies Cruise, March 1, 2020” has been set up to keep people informed of what is happening.

AMBASSADOR
lishing our third annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 13 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take 10 to 20 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. Give us a call and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need. If you are leaving before March 13, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home.
From pg. 1 1-4 p.m. Admission is $15 per person and groups of 15 or more receive a discounted rate of $12.50 per person. So, gather a group of friends from your park and plan to come out to see what could be the best show you’ll see all winter. This all-star cast of performers is sure to provide an afternoon of entertainment you won’t forget. Valley Star Awards will be presented to your favorite entertainers. This year’s awards include Entertainer of the Year, From pg. 1 Nashville and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas. Don’t forget to tell them it’s SAFE here. We all know there has been a lot of bad press about what’s happening in Mexico, but the Rio Grande Valley cities have some of the lowest crime rates in the country. Over 300 attend Red Hat Festival of Tables
The eighth annual Red Hat Society Festival of Tables was a great success with over 300 women attending at Casa del Sol in Donna on Feb. 6. Ladies decorated 38 tables with a variety of themes. While the table hostesses stayed with their table, guests drew a number when they entered the room that assigned them to a table. That placed ladies from all different parks seated together allowing them to visit people they might not have previously met. One of the tables featured an antique sewing machine in the middle and two sewing machine music boxes at each end. Sue Martin and Grace Tracy were hostesses. Martin said the 1955 portable Singer sewing machine belongs to her and she still uses it when she works in groups quilting. “It’s small enough to transport easily and sews straight seams just as well as it did in 1955.” Other tables featured holiday themes. Jane Garza and Ethel Gonzalez decorated a Valentine’s table using her Avon garnet red Cape Cod glassware and pink napkins. An elegant Halloween table
featured a giant skull with a black cape covered with cobwebs in the middle of the table. This sat on a white cobweb laced table runner over a black tablecloth. Black napkins and black plates completed the look. Hostesses were Mila Hedin and Mauverdyne Hombledon. Red, white and blue were used in several patriotic themed tables. A tabled themed USA by Verna Boss and Elena Guerrera used flags, red chargers, flag plates and a doll dressed in red, white and blue holding a U.S. flag. A similar table was dedicated for a Memorial Day theme, featuring flags in the center. Each plate had the insignias for the five branches of military service. Mardi Gras is a popular celebration in many towns and Sherry Petrie and Hazel Oachs created a festive table with masks, beads and Mardi Gras doll. The Texas Citrus Fiesta was represented by Mary Virginia Gerlach who decorated her table with a wagon of citrus fruits and decorated hats worn by models in the 2019 Product Costume Show.

Kansas Day celebrated at Casa del Sol
You can’t forget Dorothy Bowman’s name. “My name is Dorothy and I live in Kansas,” is how she introduces herself to others. “I live on the Yellow Brick Road and have a dog named Toto.” And while the first two parts of the statement are true, the same can’t be said about her street address or loveable dog. “People never remember other people’s names,” she said. “They never forget mine now.” Bowman was one of more than 260 people who enjoyed the annual Kansas Day celebration at Casa del Sol RV Park. Vehicles with Kansas license plates surrounded the entertainment hall on the outside and many Kansas Jayhawks or Kansas State Wildcats T-shirts, hats were worn inside the event center. Kansas was admitted to the Union on Jan. 29, 1861 and became the 34th state. Jan Bergman, chairperson of the event, said the event is celebrated in the Valley to show “our pride in being from Kansas and love of our state.” “We are proud of our state and every once in a while, you run into someone from Kansas down here and this is a way for all of us to get together, get familiar with one another and have just a good time,” said Bergman, making sure to point out all of the sunflowers scattered throughout the facility, representing the Sunflower State. “This is the largest turnout we’ve ever had.” The seating arrangement for the luncheon was set up in Kansas regions. There was a section for the Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, Northwest and Southwest regions. Bergman recalled a time when a reunion took place at one of the annual events. “A few years ago, a couple came in and sat down with some other couples,”
Bergman said. “It just so happened that the husband of one of the couples had gone to kindergarten with the wife of another couple and they hadn’t seen each other since the lower grades of school. That was real special.” Country music artist Rusty Rierson, an Augusta, Kansas, native performed to the delight of the crowd. He also had the crowd laughing with his quick barbs and jokes. “Is there anybody left in Kansas?” he asked the crowd. “I couldn’t believe the turnout for the Kansas Day celebration,” Rierson said. “I very much enjoyed playing for the folks from back home – there were many familiar faces. I’m already looking forward to next year.” “Dorothy from Kansas” said she and her husband first came to the Valley close to 25 years ago. “We stayed a week for the first time,” she said. “The next time we stayed a month, then two months and then three months and finally I told my husband, ‘We need to get out of Kansas. The weather is never going to get any better, we have no business staying here and we live in the boonies.’” After staying for 22 years as Winter Texans, they finally moved into Heritage Village last year as full-timers. The couple was married for 72 years before he passed away last year. They were married in 1946, right after she graduated high school and he returned from World War II and was sent to Midway Island. “I was married to an old guy,” she joked while getting her photo taken with Rierson. And while everyone remembers her name now, Dorothy and her dog Toto are not in Kansas anymore.

Is your shoulder pain due to a rotator cuff tear?
Amy Garza PT, DPT, MTC
Frank Garza PT, DPT
FREE ROTATOR CUFF AND SHOULDER PAIN SEMINAR REVEALS HOW TO ACCELERATE HEALING USING NATURAL TECHNIQUES
Do you have shoulder pain with any of the following day-to-day activities? Reaching Overhead? Reaching into the Back Seat? Reaching Behind Your Back? While you Sleep?
Dear Fellow RGV Resident, If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you surely know that shoulder pain can be such a menace ... It can ruin a good nights sleep ... and when you lack sleep, you get cranky. It can change the way you put on your shirt ... or for the ladies, your bra ... because it’s just too painful to do it the way you used to. It can stop you from enjoying daily simple tasks ... making you frustrated .. .forcing you to take more pain pills than you would care to admit. And for golfers out there ... it can ruin your game ... getting scores you’re too embarrassed to tell your friends are probably wondering why you even care to play! Is it your rotator cuff that’s the culprit? The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that run from our shoulder blade into the top end of our bone in our arm. They help keep the ball end of our arm bone centered in the shoulder socket .When healthy, the rotator cuff allows us to reach in all directions smoothly and without pain.
Dr. Frank Garza PT, DPT, Amy Garza, PT, DPT, MTC (Physical Therapists) PS-Call 956-994-8880 to hold your spot for the FREE Rotator Cuff Shoulder Pain Seminar on February 22nd You can also sign up online at: www.pure-physicaltherapy.com/rclanding PSS - Only 30 Spots Available...CALL NOW If you experience pain, weakness or difficulty during the tests mentioned here, it is highly likely that you are suffering from a rotator cuff tear. 1. 2. 3.
This first test is called the Drop Arm Test . With your arm relaxed by your side, tum your arm out so your thumb faces directly to the side. Slowly raise your arm to the side, then slowly lower the arm. Test is positive if the arm suddenly drops or you experience severe pain on the way up or down. The Lateral Jobe Test In this test for the right shoulder, raise you right arm out to the side by lifting your right elbow to 90 degrees, with your hand hanging down, fingers pointed to the ground, your thumb pointing to your tummy. With your left hand, push down on the right arm just above the elbow. Test is positive if you experience pain or weakness. The 3rd test is called Lift-Off Test The hand of the affected arm is placed on the lower back. Now try lifting the hand off the back without straightening your elbow. Test is positive if you’re unable to lift the hand off.
Now you may be asking ... can a rotator cuff tear heal and pain subside without medications, injections, or surgery? In most cases, yes ... but it depends on but not limited to the following factors. What is the grade of the tear? There are 3 grades. Which of the 4 muscles of the rotator cuff is torn. How old is the tear. TESTIMONIALS “My pain is gone, and I breathe easier and stand taller. Thanks to all my therapists that helped me.” Linda Been “Doctors told me i needed surgery. I’m so glad I attended the workshop as now I do not even take medications and can move my shoulder better” Gumesindo (Frank) Garcia
