Brigitte Villeneuve quilt wins Best of Show
By Kathy Olivarez The talent and skills shown by the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild members is remarkable. The creativity and artistic work that goes into many of these quilts is incredible. Quilters spend hours that stretch into months and years to make some of these works of art. Such is the case of Brigitte Villeneuve, of Quebec, Canada, who created a quilt called “French Garden” that won Best of Show in this year’s RGV Guild Quilt Show. She envisioned the design and drew it out on paper, using no other pattern. This See QUILT SHOW pg. 06

Valley presents Entertainer of Year awards
By Kathy Olivarez With so much talent gathered under one roof, the Valley Star Awards Show just may have been the best show in the Rio Grande Valley this year. The Valley Star Awards Show, produced by Robert Ferguson, combines presentations of entertainer of the year awards with live performances by some to the top talent in the Rio Grande Valley. This year’s show, held Feb. 21 at Mission Bell Resort, featured performances by J.C. Harrisson, Denim & Diamonds, John Sager, Dave & Daphne, Leslie Blasing and Link Union. The Winter Texan Times conducts the balloting, allowing Winter Texans Valley-wide to vote for their favorite entertainers in 11 different categories, such as Family Musical Group of the Year, Rock n Roll Band of the Year and Country Western Band of the Year. Over 2,000 votes were tallied in this year’s selections. The winners are announced at the Valley Star Awards Show. Winning this year’s battle for the most coveted award – Entertainer of the Year – was Leslie Blasing for the second year in a row. John Sager previously captured the

Bees sting Brahmas on Winter Texan night
By Luciano Guerra It’s fast-paced, hard-hitting action on ice. It’s the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees hockey and there’s nothing else like it in south Texas. Friday night, Feb. 13, was Winter Texan night at State Farm Arena, sponsored by the Winter Texan Times, and the Bees gave the larger than usual crowd all the excitement they could handle as they stung the Lone Star Brahmas 3-2 in a shootout. The win was the Bees’ fourth in a row and their third shootout win over that four game span. Bill and Betty Ryan call southern Illinois home but they spend their winters at Sunlight Travel Trailer Park in McAllen. Before the start of Friday night’s game, the Ryans shared what it is about Winter Texan night that they enjoy the most. “We come to the Killer Bees’ games every year on Winter Texan night,” said Winter Texans from Winter Ranch Resort and Tradewinds Resort compete in a Bill Ryan. “We are not big hockey fans shootout competition during intermission at the Killer Bees Hockey Winter Texan See HOCKEY pg. 32 Night. New RGV Civil War Trail launch is Feb. 27-28
Not many people, even South Texans, know that the last land battle of the American Civil War in May 1865 was fought at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, Texas. Nor are they aware of the visits to the region by Civil War Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. However, the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Program at the University of Texas-Pan American is ready to introduce a valuable new resource that will educate not only locals but the world and future generations about the region’s rich historical role in the war. On Feb. 27 and 28, the CHAPS Program will officially launch the Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail, a virtual tour in the form of a map/guide/brochure and associ-

ated web page and podcasts that provide a conceptual walk through the history of the Civil War in South Texas. The trail, which was developed with the support of local historians, educators and representatives from local, state and federal agencies, is the only Civil War Trail in Texas and will be made available in Spanish and English. The trail, which runs through a 200mile, five-county stretch between Laredo and Brownsville, has key locations identified on a detailed map with accompanying audio podcasts describing each site’s significance. The podcasts are accessible by cell phone and also have an associated QR code that takes visitors to a linked website that provides more information and related images. On Saturday, Feb. 28, the public is invited to a free public lecture series and living history event held at the UTPA Student Union Theater from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Following a ribbon cutting, attendees can learn more about what trail organizers call “the complex history of ethnic and racial tension, international intrigue and the clash of colorful characters that mark the Civil War era in this region.” Geared to appeal to novice historians as well as Civil War buffs, the event for the See CIVIL WAR TRAIL pg. 33

FEBRUARY 26, 2015 QUILT SHOW
From pg. 01 quilt also won first place in the Large Quilt Division. She also entered another quilt in this year’s show, entitled “Romantic,” that won honorable mention in the Large Quilt category. Villeneuve told the Winter Texan Times it took over two years to complete “French Garden,” which features a fountain and a floral design in the center of the quilt. Designs were in shades of purple and gold. She used six different shades of purple to create the design. One of the techniques used on the quilt was trapunto, which gave the quilt a slight puff under some of the designs. On the base part of the quilt where there were no designs, she did micro-quilting, making tiny circles with golden thread that were so small they changed the color of the beige background from a distance. The circles were smaller than a pencil eraser and covered the entire quilt. She stitched them with a small machine over a period of months. As if the unique design on the top of the quilt were not enough, this quilt was reversible, having a gold fabric design on the other side. This quilt won also first place in the Canadian Quilt Competition in 2013. Her second quilt, “Romantic,” is beige and is covered with a variety of elegant quilting techniques. This quilt took her a year to complete. It was made with a

The workmanship on these two quilts alone was so intricate, it was almost unbelieveable that someone would have the patience to work so long on one project. And yet there were many other beautiful quilts that showed long hours of work by their loving creators. In the Traditional Bed Quilt – Large category, first place went to Villenueve, second place went to Cheryl Unruh, third place went to Jean cline, and honorable mention went to Villaneuve. In the Small Bed Quilt category, first place went to Wava Scott, second place to
Darlene Talbot, and third place to Karen Thompson. Honorable mention went to Shirley Apfel. In the Wall Hanging category, first place was awarded to Sharon and Debbie De Garimore, second place to Karyn Heaney, and third place to Julie Wichtendahl. Dianne Parry earned honorable mention. In the Art & Innovation category, Judy Blum took first place, Sharon De Garimore won second place, and third place went to Patrice Lee. Honorable mention went to Karen Forbes. From pg. 03 Motown, and “Fountains of Faith” to name a few. She is currently at The Uptown Café & Dinner Theatre in Branson on Tuesdays through Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when the season opens. Gary Crain has been performing the voice of Gomer Pyle since 1964. In 1994 he met Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy” and Johnny Paul on “The Andy Griffith Show.” Thibodeaux invited Gary to an Andy Griffith Show reunion where some of the old stars heard him, and asked him to perform an event with them. Approximately 13 of the original stars told him he did such a good job, he needed to create a Gomer Pyle show. Encouraged by their praise, he decided to give it a try and that was the start of his Gomer Pyle tribute shows. Several years ago he performed at a Gene Autry/John Wayne Film Fest in Memphis as the voice of Pat Buttram, Gene Autry’s sidekick, reenacted an old radio program. In the Rio Grande Valley, Crain does a show with his wife, called the Gary and Patsy Show. Gary Crain received the 2015 Valley Star Award for Novelty/Comedy Act of the Year. Greg Jones toured the country for many years with show bands, quartets, trios, and his own “one man band show.” Greg’s vocal range has allowed him to sing lead and harmony with several groups.
pop, oldies, show tunes, standards, and gospel. He also plays keyboards, and guitar. He was the recipient of the 2011 Country Gospel Music Association Male Artist Award. While living in Branson Greg performed at Silver Dollar City, Treasure Lake RV Resort and with Barbara Fairchild at the Starlight Theatre. He and Jodi Miller sang at several Veterans Day celebrations. He has also opened for Jeff and Sheri, Easter, Gold City and N Harmony. Texas Country Cloggers plan show March 1 The Texas Country Cloggers, the best-known clog dancing group in the Rio Grande Valley, will perform Sunday, Mar.1 at 7 p.m. in the activity hall of Bentsen Grove Resort, 810 Bentsen Palm Drive in Mission. This is their third annual clogging show and it is open to the public. Admission is $5. Texas Country Cloggers started at Bentsen Palm Resort in 1975. Today, the group is composed of cloggers ranging in age from 54 to 73, who take part in clogging sessions as many as seven times a week between October and April each year. They are from all over the United States and Canada and there is even one clogger from Germany. They have performed at venues for the mayor of Mission, BorderFest and throughout the Rio Grande Valley at festivals, schools, resorts and adult day cares. Instructor Jacque Shell spends her winter ensuring the dance group has a good time while getting great aerobic exercise. She attends clog-dancing conventions and workshops during summer months where she learns new dances to bring to Bentsen Grove Resort to teach the cloggers. “Clogging evolved as an individual form of expression, with a person using his feet as an instrument to make rhyth-

mic and percussive sounds to accompany music,” explains Shell. “The dance originated in Wales and England. In the 15th century, the all-wooden clog was replaced by a leather-topped shoe with a one-piece wood bottom. Today’s shoes have double taps to accentuate the percussive rhythms, usually to the downbeat with the heel keeping the rhythm.” Clog dancing has gained popularity in the last 15 years, and when people hear the cadence of cog dancing, they are soon tapping their feet trying to keep up. Clogging is good, clean fun with upbeat music ranging from Dolly Parton to Miranda Lambert to Spanish Arabic, bluegrass and swing music. The enthusiasm of the dancers is quite contagious, said Shell. “In fact,” according to sound technician Howard Bieber, “the more you clap, the more they dance!” Texas Country Cloggers is currently booking for the 2015-2016 winter season. For more information contact Jacque Shell at (517) 740-7414. In the meantime, come out and enjoy an evening of fun on March 1 at Bentsen Grove Resort.
