Senior Texan Canadians challenge USA
Some call it better than the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup and World Series all wrapped into one. On Thursday, March 6, at 9 a.m. they will come. Over 300 Winter Texans and local residents will come out to Westside Park on Ware Road in McAllen for the annual Canada vs. USA Senior Texan Softball League games. Fans will have flags and noisemakers to cheer their favorite team. To encourage the good-natured rivalry, players and their spouses will be passing out flags, representative of their respective teams. These Canada vs. USA softball games have been going on for 17 years between Winter Texans (and a few locals). The first game, starting at 9 a.m., will be between teams in the Competitive Division. At 10 a.m. the second game will be for teams in the Recreational Division. At 11 a.m. the Leisure Division will take the field. This division has a number of players in their 80s and one who is 90 years old. This Canada vs USA Softball Canada will challenge the USA team again in the annual Senior Texan Softball League year, there are three “gals” who have also See SOFTBALL pg. 11 games next week.
Golden Age Olympics – A Good Time for All
By Roda Grubb McAllen Parks and Rec’s Golden Age Olympics have been held yearly for the past 35 years. Starting out with about six events, they have grown to 30 events, with a new event added almost every year. Already Sudoku and Jigsaw Puzzles are slated to be added to next year’s events. “What matters most is the fun our Winter Texans have,” a happy Leslie Howland, special events and marketing coordinator for the City of McAllen, stated. “The staff of McAllen Parks and Rec have a good time making sure they’re having a good time. It’s a reminder to us of how we want to be in our older years – having fun.” “We want to get the older population moving. We don’t want them just sitting around,” Victor Ayala, superintendent of athletics for the City of McAllen, said. “It’s our way of saying, ‘Get up! Be active!’ Even if you’re not athletic, we have cake baking, horseshoes, bean bag toss where you can work on your hand-eye coordination. Come out and have fun!” And fun they have. Around 1400 participants this year will participate in the Marcia Wiese of Snow to Sun, Weslaco is going for the gold in the Mixed Doubles See OLYMPICS pg. 03 Shuffleboard Tournament held at Casa del Sol as part of the Golden Age Olympics.

Contract Bridge Tournament Funny the folk you meet at these tournaments. From bottom left is Jacque Johnson, Fiesta Village, Mission; Laura Walsh, El Valle del Sol RV Park, Mission; Shirley Niygren, Fiesta Village, Mission and lastly, Bernice Gregory, El Valle del Sol, is over 100 years old and accounts her longevity to: “I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. I eat lots of vegetables and fruits … and chocolate!”
OLYMPICS
From pg. 01 30 categories stretching out from January through March. A large variety of card games from euchre to cribbage to poker for those card loving senior citizens, and biking, crossword puzzles, mini golf, different styles of billiards and shuffleboard, petanque, and table tennis are just a sampling of the other selection of games for these Olympics. For anyone over 50 here in the Valley, not just Winter Texans, the games have senior citizens pouring out of their homes from San Benito to Mission, to play in one of the events. I caught up with some Olympiads during a Nine Ball Singles Tournament. Five years ago, Lise Lemay, Pleasant Valley Resort, Mission, gave into her husband’s suggestion to play pool and here she is playing in the Olympics! “My husband and I are really active in these events. Besides the billiards tournaments, we play in the cribbage, poker and petanque,” her face was awash in a wide grin, though she and opponent, Connie Earanowski, Llano Grande Resort, Mercedes, were total professional competitors during their game. “My husband taught me snooker on a 6 x 12 table, a very hard game in Canada. These games came easy after that. I’ve been playing for about 30 years,” Connie’s face was as happy as Lise’s. After playing in tournaments in Canada, she’s enjoying playing for fun instead of money. Then I ran into Phyll Thackery, Tip O’Texas RV Resort, Pharr, the 2013 Woman Athlete of the Year. Entering 22 categories this year will give her another shot at the title. “Nine Ball is a game for a less skilled player and it gives those of us with less skill more hope in winning. If you miss where you were shooting and the ball goes into another hole, it still counts. All you
have to do is hit the balls in consecutive order,” Phyll explains a little of the game. With an undergraduate degree in Recreation and Parks Administration, it was a natural for her to become the volunteer coordinator for her park when her predecessor stepped down. Her involvement has grown as the years passed. First she entered one event, the next year she entered a few more. “The next year I realized I was having so much fun that I just started signing up for many of the categories. The biggest thing is It’s Fun! It keeps people healthy – they have friends, they get exercise, they have something to look forward to that day!” her enthusiasm was obvious. On to that sport that I had always categorized as an “old person’s sport.” Boy, did I get an eye-awakening! Shuffleboard is not just for old folk – except in this tournament, of course. “Shuffleboard is a game of skill,” was the first statement that caught my attention. Skill? Shuffling those pucks back and forth? “It’s a game of strategy.” There are amateurs and experts – all depending on the number of points you have won after winning a tournament. A 95-year-old woman who was beating everybody, had already left for the day. So I decide to chat with Venis D. Hall and his wife, Betty, Snow to Sun RV Resort, Weslaco. Venis was only 92, extremely spry, with the movements and appearance of a 60-year-old. “When we first came down, Betty got involved in shuffleboard but not me so much. Finally, she got me going. I like everything about it and I like meeting all the good friends we now have. It’s like a big family,” Venis happily commented. “If we weren’t shuffling, we wouldn’t be down here.” “It’s wonderful here. If we’re not shuffling we’re watching shuffling,” Betty See OLYMPICS pg. 36

James and Faye Marvell brings back Hippie Dances
One of the Valley’s longtime entertainers is back in the Valley with his newest attraction, Hippie Dances. James Marvell, was a member of the Warner Brothers’ 60s Band, Mercy, that topped the Billboard and Cashbox charts in the late 60s second to the Beatles’ song “Get Back.” Mercy had the million selling classic “Love Can Make You Happy” at number two. After singing with Mercy, James and a friend formed The Country Cavaleers, The Country Cavaleers had hair down to their waists and cowboy hats and sang country music. Marvell played a rebel guitar, which became a trademark for him. Their appearance caused quite a stir in the country music world where long hair was not acceptable. A 1971 clipping from the Country Music Association explained the purpose of the long hair and mod clothes was to bridge the generation gap in order to get their message across. Unlike many other groups playing in the 70’s, Country Cavaleers’ message to youth was, ”Stay off Drugs.” Marvell and Good had witnessed firsthand what hap-
pened to people in the music industry such as Jimmie Hendrix, when they became involved with drugs. They wanted to warn the youth of the dangers of drugs. More recently in 2008, James’ song, “Embrace the World,” topped both country and gospel charts at number one with its powerful message, “Love begins with you and me…but it must be given away to make it stronger every day.” In 2009, James’ song, “Did Pop Smoke with Willie?” reached number one on The Music Review in New York. The song is based on a time in the ‘90’s when James sang with Willie Nelson in Branson and See MARVEL pg. 36

Benefit for Children’s Haven International is great success
By Kathy Olivarez The third annual benefit for Children’s Haven International, an orphanage in Reynosa that serves 62 children, was once again a huge success. A sit down dinner and show held at Mission West, played to a sell-out crowd. The show featured the talents of Branson performers, John Sager, Jackson Haney, Jeff Gordon and Gordy and Debbie Wensel. Robert Ferguson, who acted as emcee, told the audience all of the performers donated their time and talents for the benefit
of the orphanage. The first entertainer was John Sager who sang “Believe,” “ Amazing Grace,” his signature song, “Unchained Melody,” “One Pair of Hands,” and “Hallelujah.” Sager was recently named Male Vocalist of the Year at the Valley Star Awards Show held Feb. 15 at Mission Bell Resort. He has also been named “Entertainer of the Year” twice in the Valley Star Awards. Back home in Branson, John can be found See BENEFIT pg. 33

Golden Oldies coming to Country Sunshine, Texas Trails
A new edition of the Golden Oldies Show, featuring Branson performers Susan Hudson Carman, John Sager, Gary & Patsy Crain and Jackson Haney, will be performed twice this season. The first show will be held March 1 at Country Sunshine RV Resort in Weslaco at 2 p.m. and the second show is March 4, at Texas Trails at 7 p.m. Susan Hudson Carman is best known for her guest performances on the television show, “Hee Haw.” As a young woman she traveled with the USO troops in England, Scotland, Germany and The Netherlands.

Afterwards, she worked with Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty, Don Williams, Sammy Smith and the Wilburn Brothers. In 1988, she competed against 2500 females to receive the title, Ms. Country Music America, receiving her award from Tammy Wynette on the stage of the Grande Old Opry Show. Susan moved to Branson in 1991 and has since appeared in The Ferlin Huskey Show, Chisai Childs and the Starlighters, Elvis and the Superstars, and the Ladies of Motown, and Fountains of Faith. In 2014, he was named Valley Star Awards Male Vocalist of the Year for the third time here in the RGV. In 2012-2013 he was also named Valley Star Awards overall Entertainer of the Year. John’s talents were noticed in high school when he was named best male vocalist in his junior and senior years. He began singing for weddings and funerals and learned to play the guitar in college. GOLDEN OLDIES
From pg. 08 of Mr. Haney from “Green Acres” and a variety of other characters from that era of television. Crain also sings famous Elvis hits and impersonates Bill Clinton for a more modern impersonation. Patsy, Gary’s wife, sings the songs of favorite female artists like Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Connie Francis and Anne Murray. Together, the couple sings gospel songs or other popular duets. Jackson Haney is the newest addition to the Golden Oldies Show. Growing up in a musical family, Jackson started at the age of 15 with his own band when his father died suddenly of a massive heart attack. When the Beatles invaded America, changing the type of music Americans listened to, Jackson changed with them, creating a new band called The Rock Mods, which was very popular in the Panhandle of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. After creating a couple of other bands, he used his college training to choreograph a show called “Red, White and You” and toured the country with it from 1974 to 1979. Again he was with several bands before settling with The Clique at a nightclub in Oklahoma City called Friends, where they played five nights a week from 1987 to 2003. After The Clique disbanded, with encouragement from some friends, Jackson moved to Branson and had a gig within 30 minutes or arriving in town. After five
weeks in Branson, he received a call asking him to audition for a “world famous band.” He thought it was a joke but went anyway. The band turned out to be Bill Haley’s Comets. He was asked to join the band. He spent seven years touring the world as the Comet’s lead guitar player, singer and music director. In 2011, he decided to leave the Comets and go out on his own. Since then he has been named Branson’s “Entertainer of the Year,” and is currently the third most requested performer on Branson Radio. For advance tickets to the Golden Oldies Show, call Country Sunshine at (956) 969-1557 or Texas Trails at (956) 7827886. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Rick Young, D.D.S.
• Pain On Chewing • Hot And Cold Sensitivity • Pain When Eating Sweets/Sugar • No Dental Decay Present • No Evidence Of Problem On X-ray Teeth may crack when subjected to stress of chewing hard foods or ice, or by biting on unexpected hard objects. Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.

BENEFIT
From pg. 06 performing at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner Sunday through Wednesday from 2 p.m. until closing time. Tuesday through Friday he will be at Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Diner from 2 p.m. until closing. Jackson Haney, who played with Bill Haley’s Comets of “Rock Around the Clock” fame as lead guitar, lead singer and music director from 2004 to 2011, was the next entertainer. He performed “Do You Love Me,” “Lost in the 50’s Tonight,” “Rockin’ Robin,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Rock Around the Clock,” and “See You Later Alligator.” Betsy Chacon, director of Children’s Haven International spoke to the crowd, thanking everyone for their support. She told them there are currently 62 children in residence, ranging in age from college students to a two-month-old baby. Emcee Robert Ferguson returned to the stage and sang, “Calvary is the Reason Why” before introducing Jeff Gordon, who was the third performer. Gordon sang “Old Enough to Know Better But Still Too Young to Care,” “Slow Hand,” “Ring of Fire,” “Love’s Got a Hold on Me,” “Delilah,” and Elvis’s version of “How Great Thou Art.” When he leaves the Rio Grande Valley, Gordon will be doing Tom Jones Tribute Shows in Florida. He has also appeared as Elvis at the Branson Mall Entertainment Centerstage.
The final act of the night was Debbie and Gordy Wensel, who have been producing and organizing the benefit for Children’s Haven International for the past three years. Together the couple sang, “Take It Easy.” Then Debbie Sang, “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” her signature song. Gordy announced plans for next year’s event by saying he and Mickey Gilley were good friends and he was working with Mickey to get him to do the benefit at the Pharr Convention Center next year. As if on cue, Debbie got a call on her cell phone from Gilley, saying he was available on the date under consideration, which will be in the first week of February. Look for details on the benefit performance in January of next year. The couple, who have won Musical Duo for the Valley Star Awards for three years, then continued their segment of the show by singing, “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good” and “Just You and I.” In Branson, the couple can be seen at Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Café, where they perform a George Strait Tribute Show.
