SPECIAL TAKE HOME ISSUE! Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 32, No. 20 © 2019 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, February 27, 2019 From the Publisher 2019 BorderFest features music and entertainment Become a Winter Texan Ambassador
You’ve heard all the negative news and rumors about the border. Some national media Jim Brunson outlets portray the Texas border with Mexico as a war zone, and, naturally, people who don’t know better think it’s unsafe to come to the Rio Grande Valley, let alone spend the winter here. We’re trying to change that perception and we need your help. The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our third annual Take Home Edition on March 13, and we need our Winter Texan friends and readers to take some extra copies home with you and share them with your friends up north. Mariachi Aztlán bridges cultures through music
by Roberto Ontiveros Founded in 1989, Mariachi Aztlán has gone from a local treasure to an internationally lauded ensemble of musicians who perform regularly before packed houses across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Small wonder Dr. Dahlia Guerra, the classically-trained musician and educator who founded Mariachi Aztlán, describes her students as “musical ambassadors” who are duty-bound to share the wonders of mariachi culture to the world. “We have to represent the beauty of our culture,” says Dr. Guerra “and we’re here to show the beautiful side.” Dr. Guerra sees Mariachi Aztlán as a way to bring people together. “Music unites,” she says. “Culture unites and so what we’re doing is we’re representing the beauty of the region, the beauty of the Hispanic people,” she says, adding: “We are here to sooth and to give joy through music and culture.” In recent years, the young performers who make up Mariachi Aztlán have taken their talent before audiences at the Hollywood Bowl, the John F. BlueBonnet RV Resort Blooms Again
Nestled in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of Southern Texas is one of its many treasures, BlueBonnet RV Resort. Secluded in the serenity of the Valley is a transformation of an already established RV Resort, moving into the future of the RV life style. BlueBonnet located in Mission, Texas is one of the eighteen RV Resorts in Texas and Florida owned and operated by the Wilder Corporation. Overseeing the transformation is Steve Castleberry, operations manager of BlueBonnet. Castleberry’s vision and hospitality industry experience is blending the future look of the Resort. Leading it to a showcase facility, BlueBonnet is poised to set the standard for Winter Texan RV destinations. The resort today supports an ongoing adult only community of residents, both full time and RV travelers. During the summer months, the future holds unique opportunities as a family destination. In close proximity to Mexican cultural and entertainment destinations. BlueBonnet is a family environment, just a short distance from South Padre Island, one of the Texas Gulf Coast year-round beaches with the best winter climate. While the Rio Grande Valley provides many leisure-time opportunities, BlueBonnet holds its own charm with an indoor pool and newly refurbished and updated game room/lounge. New to the
resort is a dog park with agility course and amenities for our four-legged friends. Meticulously maintained grounds that support old world fountain gathering centers along with a newly constructed butterfly garden. Butterflies are natural to the Valley which is home to the National Butterfly Center. After hours activities include wine tasting events in the newly constructed gathering and outdoor kitchen, complete with a pagoda, fire pit and entertainment area. The resort maintains regulation shuffleboard courts, a remodeled fitness room, measured fitness trail within the resort boundaries, horse shoe pits, a stage, professional sound system and a complete kitchen contained in both recreation halls. Castleberry’s future plans include a

• PARK SALUTE • Alamo Rec-Veh Park: Continuing 46 Innovative Years
Celebrating its 46th anniversary, Alamo Rec-Veh Park (ARVP) continues to offer Winter Texans an impressive list of activities. Ask 90-year-old former war pilot Jack Van Norman (below, left).
Recently, he joined the Tuesday morning indoor RC quadcopter fly instructed by Wisconsin native James Brown (above, right). Staying focused, Van Norman had his craft hovering, as well as performing 360-degree flips in no time. Other RC park activities include the Rio Grande Valley’s first RV park oval track. Using Doug
Kortbein and Mike Benoit’s design, it’s complete now with an elevated driver’s stand, computerized scoring and spectator bleachers. RC sailboat and power boat racing, as well as small car and off-road tracks round out the park’s radio-controlled activities. A competitive activity and one of ARVP’s first unique activities was a pellet/air gun range. Jim Davis, a top national shooter, and several residents helped project leaders Mike Benoit and Dave Niccum (deceased) with its construction. More innovative activities are added yearly. Led by an awardwinning physical fitness trainer, AquaFit helps ARVP’s Winter Texans get themselves in shape with unique water exercise classes tailored to accommodate injuries. On Sundays, the 9 a.m. nondenominational church service is led by Pastor Randy Parks, a
world-touring musician, who has helped to lead church-related services since he was a youth. ARVP church activities include Bible studies, hymn sings and free movies. ARVP’s innovative opportunities continue with Bike Club members taking monthly excursions, planned by Gary Ronfeldt and his group. Park members say they also love working in their well-organized wood shop, as well as competing in the remodeled pool hall for inter-park and Wednesday Night fun leagues. ARVP folks say they enjoy shuffleboard tournaments and weekly quiltmaking and sewing groups, as well as participating in holiday parades, attending parties, playing bingo or one of dozens of weekly card games, and spending quiet days watching birds or competing in fishing derbies at the lake. In addition,
weekly professional entertainers and dances, Red Hat events, square dancing, and special activities attract hundreds at the park. The consensus of ARVP’s Winter Texans is that they keep coming back to this haven because they quickly grow attached to newly made friends and neighbors. As Tripp Wright put it at a recent all-park get-together: “All of you ARE my family. And I’m so thankful to be here!”

Midwesterners yearning for a taste of home – and anyone else looking for authentic Chicago-style pizza and other tasty dishes – simply must head over to Scalisi’s Chicago Style Pizza & More. They’re located at 912 E. Nolana Loop in Pharr. Owner Patty Scalise says the family moved from Chicago several years ago. When they decided to open a family restaurant, their passion was to serve authentic Chicago style foods. “It tastes like home,” said Barb Stanford, a former Winter Texan who recently moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Chicago. “The lamb gyro is absolutely authentic.” Her son, Tim, said he likes the Chicago combo sandwich on Gonnella bread. He says it is just like those back home. Chef Carl “Chuck” Scalise makes a fresh Chicago-style dough for the pizzas and makes the sauce from scratch. The pizza is cut in squares, Chicago-style. The restaurant offers variety of pizzas including “Scalisi’s Deluxe,” which includes one meat with an array of fresh vegetables. Or try the “Super Deluxe Four-meat Pizza.” Their Margherta pizza features fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. There are a wide variety of other varieties to choose from and they are all available in the traditional Chicago deep dish style crust, thin and crispy crust, or hand tossed crust. Scalisi’s also serves a variety of sandwiches, including the popular Italian beef sandwich, chicken parmigiana, and others. Another favorite is the Chicago-style hotdog with true Vienna sausages with poppy seed buns not found in grocery stores in the Valley. Look for authentic Maxwell Street dogs as well, served with celery salt, true Chicago style. Burgers are also available. Of course, their pastas are popular, including the colorful spicy penne chicken pasta which is a favorite among Winter Texans. The spaghetti and meatballs are homemade. Look for ravioli, calzones and strombolis. They serve a variety of fresh salads including Caesar salad, wedge salad, portabella mushroom salad and the favorite Caprese salad with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. If you’re in the mood for a great appetizer, you’re in for a treat. Scalisi’s serves Fried Mushrooms, Cheese Sticks and Buffalo Wings. Plus, they also offer Fried Pickles, Texas Toothpicks and Patty’s family favorite, Fried Cauliflower. My cameraman found the fried cauliflower so delicious he could not stop eating it, and it is usually hard to persuade him to eat a vegetable! Look for traditional desserts like the Mascarpone and ricotta cheese-filled Cannoli and cheesecake. Or opt for a brownie a la mode or vanilla ice cream. Regardless of which entrée you choose, it will be prepared in the authentic Chicago style that’ll remind you of home.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES AWARDS
From pg. 1 Dave and Daphne capped off the night with the biggest award, being named Entertainer of the Year. They also captured Duet Musical Group of the Year, winning that award for the second straight year. Dave and Daphne have been performing in the Valley for eight years. Dave, who once toured with Barbara Mandrell, is known for his incredibly fast guitar playing, impressing audiences with his skill by playing tunes such as “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and the “William Tell Overture.” He also does a mean Willie Nelson impersonation. Daphne is the perfect complement for the duo with Daphne, whose powerful and beautiful voice demands attention. “We were honored just to be nominated, so to be selected again for Duo of the Year Award was quite awesome,” Daphne said. “To win Entertainer of the Year was over the top and just way more than we ever imagined. Our thanks to the Winter Texans Times and owner Jim Brunson and staff, and to Robert and Billie Ferguson for their collaborative efforts and creations to bring things to the Valley. “We are extremely grateful for the activity directors and their nomination as well as the Winter Texans who voted for us,” Daphne said. “Last, but certainly not least, we are forever amazed at all these blessings that come from our gracious Lord. We look forward to many more fun years to come.” Another veteran of the Rio Grande, Maggie May, the country rocker, was named Female Vocalist of the Year. Others up for that award included LaDawn, Kellie Marie and Tavie Spivey. Veteran performers, however, didn’t win all the awards. Rusty Rierson, in his first full year entertaining Winter Texan audiences, was named Male Vocalist of the Year, competing with Jeff Gordon, Rick McEwen and Mario Rosales. Rierson does a variety of country music favorites from several different eras, tells jokes and shares stories – both funny and thought-provoking, and has an alter ego known as “Rockin’ Rusty,” a wilder version of Rusty that looks much like the mullet-wearing Billy Ray Cyrus (and Rusty as well, of course) and appears from time to time at different shows. “The Valley Star Awards was a special event for sure,” said Rierson, a Kansas native and graduate from Kansas State with degrees in animal science and economics. “The whole thing went off without a hitch. Winning Male Vocalist of the Year was quite an honor and I want to say thank you for the support. “I know I’m new to the Valley, but the folks here have made me feel very much at home. I’m definitely looking for to the 2020 season and hoping for lots of great shows and many new friends.” Other winners in their respective categories included:
www.wintertexantimes.com Musical Group of the Year (not related) – Razz Ma Tazz Rock ‘N Roll Band of the Year – The Classics Novelty of Comedy Act of the Year – Gene Turner (aka Mr. Pickpocket) Individual/Small Band/Variety Act of the Year – Helen Russell & Co. Family Vocal Group of the Year – Goldwing Express Country Western Band of the Year – Texas Wheels and Gospel Group of the Year – Absolutely Country, Definitely Gospel But the Awards Show included much more than just the awards presentations; six different performers kept the audience wildly entertained. Turner “Mr. Pickpocket,” showed a few audience members why he goes by that moniker, bringing some up to the stage, pickpocketing items such as rings, watches, wallets and even keys to a car and sending them back to the crowd, many times still with his most recent “finds.” Other entertainers who performed for the show included Shake, Rattle and Roll; Rierson; Helen Russell & Co.; and Williamson Branch. Shake, Rattle and Roll, the four female group dazzled the audience with their dresses and their music, kicking off the day in style with classic rock ‘n roll songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Tavie Spivey worked those in attendance for some audience interaction and was the perfect way to open the event. The long-time favorite variety band Helen Russell & Co. performed, bringing their high energy, comedy and variety show to the stage, getting rousing applause as those attending expressed their delight. Minutes later they would be back on stage as one of the night’s category winners. One performer sent lightning through the crowd with his few minutes on stage; the adrenaline-rich Kai and his ukelele. The San Antonio resident and first-year full-time Wintertainer™ dazzled on stage, jumping, twisting and playing lightning-quick riffs on his ukelele. Kai’s highlight of highlights came as he played “Johnny B. Goode” and combined a little bit of Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix as part of the song, moonwalking (Jackson), duck walking (Berry) and playing the ukelele behind his head while face first on the stage (Hendrix). Like Rierson, Kai has been a hot name in his first year entertaining Winter Texans. “This was just an amazing experience and a wonderful opportunity for me and I’m just so grateful,” Kai said. “I was just like a fan for most of the show, really amazed at all the talent that kept going up on stage. “This is my first year entertaining and I’m learning so much from others and so much from all the friendly Winter Texans. It’s such an exciting experience. I’m blessed.”

Texas Wheels Country Western Band of the Year
Helen Russell & Co. Individual/Small Band of the Year After the Williamson Branch family band closed with a wild mix of bluegrass music, with terrific instrumentals and amazing harmonies, all of the entertainers were called to the stage to honor former long-time Winter Texans Times Editor Kathy Olivarez for her dedication to the Winter Texans across the Valley. “Never did I expect something like this,” she said. “I still love being with the Winter Texans and writing stories, even though I’ve slowed down a bit. Thank you so much.” The day concluded as Williamson Branch led an all-entertainer performance (similar to “We Are the World”) in “I’ll Fly Away.” Different performers such as the Kody Norris Band, Rierson, Kellie Marie and others each took turns with a verse as the electric annual show came to a curtain call. “This was a great time,” Rierson said. “I can’t wait for next year.”

Pickleball is growing in popularity throughout the RGV
By Herb Moering Pickleball is not just a growing phenomenon in the Rio Grande Valley, but is actually national in scope. The sport is similar to tennis, but the court is only half the size and a whiffle ball reduces the speed a bit in the back and forth volleying. That’s the picture provided by Warren Lock, an avid player, who spent most of his life coaching tennis, along with some playing tossed in. The Winter Texan from Iowa City, Iowa called pickleball a perfect game for retirees because of its combination of learning a new skill, getting good exercise and the social aspect of meeting new people. The attraction he said over tennis is less movement required. And the cost is minimal to play, he added. He said the popularity and growth of the racquet sport is not only occurring here but is exploding in Florida and California. Pickleball didn’t catch on in the Valley until about three years ago. Much of it was played at community centers and some parks. But more facilities are being added, like at Casa Del Valle RV Resort in Alamo, where two outdoor tennis courts were replaced with eight pickleball courts and Bentsen Grove Resort added two new
indoor courts, bringing the total to three. The 62-year-old Lock, who stays at Winter Ranch RV Resort in Alamo with his wife for three and a half months starting each January, was participating in the Golden Age Olympics (GAO) Pickleball Competition that ran from Feb. 20 to the Golden Age 22nd at the Palmview Community Center in McAllen. He can only stay that long because back in Iowa he’s a part-time tennis teacher at the University of Iowa. Originally from Australia, Lock landed in the U.S. on a four-year tennis scholarship at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee when he was just 20. He played more tennis after college and ran several tennis clubs during much of the next 42 years in the U.S. All of the GAO competition consists of doubles play for men, women and mixed. More than 80 teams signed up to play, which involved 145 players, accord-
second year in a row. He and Palmer, who is 83, are partners for mixed doubles which they took the top place this year. She was the oldest player until this year when a woman, who was 85, signed up for the tournament. The ambassador also travels to play pickleball, having been to a national tournament recently in Indian Wells, California. People come from many parts of the nation for the competition. Olympics Pickleball Competition in McAllen While the majority of players in the Valley are Wining to Lillian Palmer, who is one of sev- ter Texans, Palmer, who gave lessons in eral pickleball ambassadors in the Valley the past, is encouraging all ages from 12 promoting the sport. The coordinator of years on up to join the sport. She said, the GAO event for the past three years, “You only need a small plot of ground and noted that was a significant increase a net to play.” from the 115 who participated last year. It’s a game that is one of the fastest if In addition to the types of doubles play, not the fastest growing sport nationally, there are also two skill levels for players Palmer said. In the Valley it’s played nine to choose from, 3.0 and below and 3.5 months out of the year in various venues, and above. It’s necessary to win two out the ambassador added. The only time it’s of three games, with a score of 11 points not played is in the summer because Wineach to take a match. ter Texans are gone. She expects the sport Lock plays in the higher skill level to continue growing each year, especially and in men’s doubles; he and his partner, as more retirees discover its benefits. W&I Resort shows respect for the flag and veterans
By Henry Miller MISSION — David Chevalier’s dad greeted the local sheriff as he walked into the yard. “Excuse me, do you have a son named David Chevalier,” the sheriff said. “Yes, I do,” dad said, probably chuckling in his mind because he knew what the next statement was going to be. “Why hasn’t he replied to his draft letter,” the sheriff asked. “It’s because I was already in the Navy for almost a year at the time,” David said to the crowd at W&I Resort in Mission during the presentation of quilts, made by park resi-dents, to 22 veterans. “I got my draft letter when I had already been in the Navy for six months.” The quilt-giving and recognition of the veterans was the second half of a ceremony that began with a flag retirement ceremony where more than a dozen United States flags were placed in a barrel and burned, which, according to flagsusa.com states “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Among the reasons to retire a flag would be a cut
or tattered flag or one that has even faded and the colors are no longer vibrant and bold. Ironically the fourth annual flag retirement ceremony landed on the 74th anniver-sary of when members of the 5th Divisions of the U.S. Marines planted a U.S. Flag atop Mount Suribachi on the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima near the end of one of World War II’s bloodiest battle. The photo is one of the most recognized recreations in U.S. warfare his-tory. The first year that W&I Resort coordinated the event, quilts were donated to World War I vets, the following year they were made for World War II veterans and last year for Vietnam Veterans. “This year we are giving quilts to veterans we may have missed or to new veterans in our park,” said Mary Scott, a W&I resident and quilter. “We hope to con-tinue to do this.” The recipient of Scott’s quilt was Bob Isakson, who received a warm ovation after mentioning that he had “two children and three grandchildren who have or are serving in the military.” Scott wasn’t sure if she’d be capable of finishing the quilt, suffering a mini-stroke

ence to kind of recognize how much I love what I am doing.” This commitment to craft has obviously paid off. As a much sought after example of musical excellence, Mariachi Aztlán has been invited to perform at the Tucson International Mariachi Conference, the San Diego International Mariachi Festivals, and the Chicago Mariachi Festivals. In 2010, Mariachi Aztlán collaborated with the Houston Grand Opera, in the stage production of the world’s first Mariachi-Opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. In 2015, Mariachi Aztlán worked with the Chicago Lyric Opera to present the mariachi opera El Pasado Nunca Se Termina, which is set on the eve of the Mexican Revolution. Dr. Guerra has a special fondness for the Winter Texans who make it a point to catch local performances in the Valley “I just want to thank our Winter Texan friends for appreciating our culture, for appreciating the talent on the campus,” says Dr. Guerra. “They are an inspiration to us because they love us and they come and enjoy the show, so they make us want to keep performing.” The next opportunity to see Mariachi Aztlán perform will be March 2 during the FESTIBA 2019 Mariachi Concert on the Edinburg UTRGV campus. This concert will feature the first place vocal competition winners, the group winners in the Middle School level, and the first place winners of the 4A, 5A, and 6A High School Varsity levels. The concert will also feature our guest artists Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, the first all female mariachi in the United States, operatic baritone, Octavio Moreno, and UTRGV Mariachi Aztlán. For ticket information, go online at patron. utrgv.edu. Tickets are $20 for adults.
From pg. 1 ing Arts Center, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. In 2010, Mariachi Aztlán accepted a White House invitation to perform before President Barack Obama. The performance was symbolic, as the private concert was meant to celebrate the signing of an Executive Order commemorating the renewal of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. According to Dr. Guerra, who acts as the Assistant Vice-President of Public Art at UTRGV, the expectations tied to mariachi music has changed dramatically over the recent years. “The mariachi culture has grown from being a group in a bar or maybe street musicians to a highly trained, musically talented act,” she says. Dr. Guerra feels that the immense respect given to Mariachi Aztlán has become a source of major pride for the young musicians who represent the Hispanic heritage of their communities. “These mariachis go out all over the country and compete and so they bring pride to their communities and so it goes beyond just pretty music; it is a source of pride for the city and a source of empowerment for the students,” she says. Francisco Loera, co-director of Mariachi Aztlán, stresses the emphasis on excellence before every performance. “Musically speaking, you want to be perfect,” says Loera, “I want perfection every time they go on stage.” Kassandra Castillo, one of the Mariachi Aztlán performers, echoes her director’s passion for perfection by saying: “Every time I play I try to play the best I have ever played, so I think I would want the audi-
not long after she started it. “The left side started working again,” she said. “I’m so happy I was able to complete the quilt.” Each recipient walked to the stage where the quilt was presented for observation. After that moment, the veteran would turn to face the audience and those on the stage holding the quilt would drape it, comfortingly, over the veteran’s shoulders. Some even wrapped their head and upper bodies in the beautiful, and quite large, handmade crafts. The celebration began with music, prayer and recognition of the veterans receiving quilts later in the day. Resident Paul Sportinelli and his group demonstrated the proper folding of a flag immediately following “Big John” singing “I’m Proud to be an American.” Other musical performances during the ceremony included the National Anthem, Ragged Old Flag, God Bless America and the
playing of “Taps.” Those with flags walked in line around the rectangular-shaped field once a fire was lit in a barrel by Jack Whitfield. Next, Darrel Hilbrand would collect one by one each of the retired flags, place them on a pole with a hook and place them into the roaring fire. Some flags burn differently than others because of the materials they are made of. No matter, they are to be burned completely to ashes before the fire it put out. As one veteran walked by he talked about the ceremony. “At first I was very skeptical; I wanted to make sure it was done with all the rever-ence that the flags deserved,” he said. “I was pleasantly surprised that first year and con-tinue to be pleasantly surprised each year. This is the way it should be done.”

FEBRUARY 27, 2019 AMBASSADORS
From pg. 1 The job of the Winter Texan Ambassador is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice–in a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing for country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Everything costs less in the Rio Grande Valley than in most other areas of the country – especially citrus and produce. Housing is much less expensive too – especially compared to the Florida retirement communities. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas.
www.wintertexantimes.com Be sure tell your friends and family it’s SAFE here. The Rio Grande Valley has some of the lowest crime rates in the country. And with all the increased law enforcement man power now patrolling the entire Valley, it’s safer than ever. Give us a call to reserve some extra copies of our March 13 Take Home Edition to take with you when you leave the Valley. Most people take 10 or 20 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. If you only need a few copies, pick up a few extras at your park/resort when we deliver the edition on March 13. If you want 10 or more copies, call us and we’ll deliver a separate bundle to the park with your name on it. If you are leaving before March 13, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home. We’ll also be posting the Take Home Edition our website at www.wintertexantimes.com and on our Facebook page, so you can share this special edition through email and Facebook as well. Thank you for choosing the Rio Grande Valley as your winter home. Our Winter Texan readers are always telling us how friendly the people are in Texas as compared to Florida and Arizona. We do appreciate you and enjoy having you here.
