Golden Age Olympics

Horseshoes aren’t just for horses

By Roda Grubb Walking up to Tropic Star’s horseshoe pits, this year’s location for McAllen’s Golden Age Olympics Horseshoe Tournament, soft sounds of clanking wafted through the cold, crisp air. Never having followed horseshoes before, I was taken by surprise at the number of people out there throwing the approximately two pounds of metal, attempting to wrap it around a metal stake sticking out of the ground 14 to 15 inches. Watching the tournament, it was obvious this was a serious, but fun, event. “I’ve pitched horseshoes ever since I was a little kid with my grandpa,” 75-yearold Georgia Burke, Casa de Sol, happily said. “At family reunions and get-togethers, we got out there and started pitching just for fun. There wasn’t any competition. Then, about 25 years ago, we heard people were playing in leagues. I didn’t know there was a league. We signed up and started pitching. We’ve even been go-

ing to the World Horseshoe Tournaments since 2000.” These people love their horseshoes. As with so many things with the Golden Age generation – in the case of these games anyone over 50 years old – it’s about fun, about meeting people, about exercise. Horseshoes offers that in spades. “Participants submit an average based on past games they’ve played,” Ilea ODonnell, recreation supervisor, City of McAllen, said. “We get people who have averages ranging from five percent to fifty percent and up. Of course, those higher ones are the really good ones. “We put them in flights according to their average, keeping them as close together in average as possible. In our tournament they play a Round Robin where everyone plays each other at least once. Phyll Thackery, of Tip-O-Texas RV ReEach of them gets two scores, which we sort, pitches for the prize, earning a siltotal up to determine the winner.” ver medal at the Golden Age Olympics Horseshoes Competition. Gomer & Patsy Show is a step back into TV history

By Kathy Olivarez For those who grew up in a time when television was more innocent and filled with loveable characters like Gomer Pyle from the Andy Griffith Show, and Mr. Haney from Green Acres, there is not better place to relive those moments than a Gomer & Patsy Show. Gary and Patsy Crain, entertainers from Branson, Mo., spend the winters each year in the Rio Grande Valley where they enjoy entertaining and also (unlike most Winter Texans) spending time with their son who lives in Edinburg. We caught up with Gary and Patsy at a recent performance at Enchanted Valley Ranch where they sang four songs together to open the show before doing their impersonations. They sang “Charlie’s Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Shake, Rattle & Roll,” and “Drinking Champagne.” While both Gary and Patsy have good voices, the musical sound that comes when the two harmonize on songs is great. After the songs, Gomer came out with a Shazam! – going right into the Gomer character for which he is best known, telling stories Gomer style. Gary has mastered the voice of Gomer and if a person shuts his eyes, he might think it is Gomer on stage. Gary then went off stage while Patsy sang. Then, he came back in a white Elvis suit with big sunglasses. He mingled with the audience singing Elvis songs like “Teddy Bear” and, “Angel” from the movie “Follow That Dream.” The audience enjoyed the show as he posed with the ladies for “photos with Elvis.” While Patsy sang “These Boots are made for Walkin’,” an old Nancy Sinatra song, Gary became Mr. Haney from Hooterville, “where Hooters got its start.” He told several of Mr. Haney’s stories like the one where the policeman told him if he was 80 and considering getting a tattoo, he might want to have his name and address put on his arm. Afterwards he added, “That’s a true story,” which was Mr. Haney’s favorite line. At one point toward the end of the show, Gary had a “senior moment” where he could not remember the words that started the song. His loyal bride, Patsy, was there to help him remember the words. He sang the song and then told the audience if they had reached the age of 69 without having a senior moment they were lucky. He then said he could not do the show without Pat-

She also created all their costumes and managed music and sold the CDs, in addition to singing while he did the costume changes. She is a vital part of the show. They ended the show with two gospel songs. The last was “Peace in the Valley,” a song where their harmony was especially great. The Winter Texan Times spoke with activity directors Phyllis Lo Faso and Iris Hallin. Both are new this year and had not heard the show before. They said they were delighted with the show and hope to bring the couple back in the future because it was obvious the audience had a good time.

ITheatre presents ‘An Unspeakable Triumph’

WESLACO – ITheatre presents their next production “An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance.” Performance dates are March 6 and 7 with all shows at 7 p.m. It will be staged at the Eugene Braught Memorial Theater at 525 S. Kansas Ave. in Weslaco. It’s a fast-paced comedy that follows a small town community theatre trying to win a $10 million dollar prize for best performance. The problem is they only have two days to put together a show. Hilarity ensues as the script keeps changing and the actors’ egos keep getting in the way. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the box office the day of the show, online at www.itheatreoftexas.com or reserved by calling 261-5656.

BorderFest to feature Korean cultural activities

The Houston Korean Farmer’s Dance Group will be a featured attraction during the 2015 BorderFest celebration of Korea Mar. 5-8 in Hidalgo. The group will demonstrate two traditional dances of Korea, the Farmer’s Dance and the Korean Fan Dance. The Farmer’s Dance, or nongak, is one of the oldest dance forms in Korea. It originated in the Three Kingdoms period (57 B.C.E. - 668 C.E.). It was traditionally performed during planting, harvesting, and other agricultural events. Early records mention Korean farmers working to the beat of percussion instruments. Until recently, the dance was performed in the rural areas, in particular during planting and harvesting, to give encouragement to the farmers and to provide them with a beat to work by. It was also often performed as a part of

shamanistic rituals to protect houses from thieves and fire, to purify the village, and to give thanks to the river or mountain spirits. Although the different regions of Korea have their own variations of the Farmer’s Dance, two major styles stand out: one is from the eastern and southeastern area and the other from the southwestern region. The former is characterized by its fastpaced music and the acrobatic movements of the dancers. The most exciting feature is the dancers who twirl long, white paper streamers attached to their hats. The latter style of the dance is slower and less acrobatic. In place of twirling hats with streamers, the dancers wear conical hats topped with big, colorful paper flowers. As the dancers move, these flowers bob and turn with every movement of their heads. The dancers wear white costumes with colorful vests and sashes. Some carry banners that read “Fanning is the foundation of society,” while others sing and dance to the sounds of various percussion instruments that include small and large gongs, double-headed hourglass and basic barrel drums, and sometimes conical flutes. Red Hat Ladies just want to have fun

By Kathy Olivarez The whole purpose of the Red Hat organization is to have fun! And that’s just what Red Hat ladies from all over the Valley did on Tuesday, Feb. 24, when they met at the Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island for a costume party and luncheon. The Dazzling Dolphins of South Padre Island hosted this annual event. The ladies came in costumes of all kinds to parade around the dining room with the other ladies in their Red Hat group, and to enjoy a Mexican food luncheon prepared by the staff, who enjoyed watching the antics of the costumed Red Hat ladies. David Sellers, husband of one of the Red Hat ladies, and Angela Hackett, a karaoke singer on the island, provided the entertainment after the parade while the ladies were enjoying lunch. There was quite an array of costumes. Shirley Hawkins, queen of the Dazzling Dolphins, and Sheila Racine, vice-queen of the Dazzling Dolphins were appropriately dressed as queens with long dresses and crowns Betty Monary of Indian Lake was the oldest Red Hat lady present. She was wearing a bright orange costume including wig. The ladies in her group, the Red Bonnets of Indian Lake, call her Bouncy Betty, because at 94-years-young, she is still able to go out and participate in their activities. Jinny Tull of Albuquerque, another

Carolyn Apland of Nebraska, was dressed as a fortune teller and Judy Arnouts, of Indian Lake, came as Little Red

Riding Hood, carrying a basket with a bottle of wine and a glass for Grandma. Being a member of Red Hats is extremely important to many of the women here,” Judy Arnouts told the Winter Texan Times. “I lost my husband this year after 52 years of marriage. It is hard for me to

go out alone. Many of the women here are in the same situation. But with other Red Hat ladies I can go out and have a lot of fun.” “I am a member of three different Red See RED HATS pg. 08

Most groups do not do projects, but some choose to do charity work.” Arnouts explained that the Red Hat organization started in England with two sisters. One was trying to get the other to go out after losing her spouse. They agreed they would wear outlandish outfits like red hats with purple dresses, and just have a good time. It was an idea whose time had come. Since it began 12 years ago, the idea

From pg. 04 sets the beat and leads the dance. Today, the Farmer’s Dance is seen mostly at special festivals and folk art competitions but can also be observed from time to time on village holidays and at major village events in rural areas. When it is performed now, the two major styles of the dance are often combined. Korean traditional Fan Dance or Bu-

spread like wildfire and there are 40,000 chapters worldwide. Some of the queens at the meeting are planning to go to a national convention in Indianapolis this summer. New traditions have been added. In their birthday month, ladies over 50 wear red dresses with purple hats. Women younger than 50 can now also join Red Hat ladies but they wear pink dresses and lavender hats. And someone recovering from cancer puts a pink feather in her hat. While the style show was quite colorful, next year’s theme for the Dazzling Dolphin’s event will be Denim & Diamonds. In 2017, the theme will be black and white. Already the ladies have begun to plan their outfits.

chaechum (pronounced Puch’aech’um) is a traditional form of Korean dance also called a fan dance, usually performed by groups of female dancers. Many Koreans use this dance during celebrations. Dancers use large fans painted with pink peony blossoms and display a show of dance. In the dance being performed, the dancers represent shaped images such as birds, flowers, butterflies and waves, and they wear brightly colored hanboks, the Korean traditional dress.

CRACKED TOOTH SYNDROME

Richard A. Young D.D.S.

• Pain On Chewing • Hot And Cold Sensitivity • Pain When Eating Sweets/Sugar • No Dental Decay Present • No Evidence Of Problem On X-ray Teeth may crack when subjected to stress of chewing hard foods or ice, or by biting on unexpected hard objects. Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.

MARCH 5, 2015 WINTER TEXAN TIMES reminded of the rules. But, it’s just fun to Leonard. HORSESHOES get out and try.” Who would

From pg. 01 Talking to various players, their stories of starting horseshoes vary distinctly. “I got into horseshoes at our park when we started coming to the Valley,” Jolly Martin, Trophy Gardens, said. “I love it. It’s outside. I like the exercise we get, the friends we make, meeting the people from the different parks. It’s just fun. It’s a different kind of game.” There’s Phyll Thackery, Tip O’ Texas, who loves the Golden Age Olympics and signs up for many of the events. “This is my fourth year playing horseshoes, but I only play once a year. I practice before the tournament and have to be

This day Phyll wins the Silver in her flight. Georgia Burke and Donna Kiefat, Paradise Park, Harlingen, play each other in the top flight. “My average is 29 and hers is 28, but today she beat me by six points,” Georgia laughs. With a one time high average of 48, she still loves the game as does her husband, Leonard. “I had a light stroke and my average went from 37 to 10 percent right quick. Then, it dribbled on down to five. But you never give up. If you do, you are done! I was out here and pitched Wednesday and I came in last,” said the happy-hearted

have thought horseshoes would be so inspirational? The Game of Horseshoes has rules. They have two pits/boxes, one at either end of the court. At the middle of the pits, which have specific dimensions and a backboard, is a metal stake. Hit outside the box and bounce in or hit the backboard and that’s a foul. Points are hard to come by – three points for hugging (my word not their’s) the metal stake and one point for coming within six inches with any part of your horseshoe. A game in the Golden Age Olympics consists of throwing 20 horseshoes, two at a time, to either end from the Pitching Platforms. Once that is learned, it’s time to pitch.

“People come and ask me how to pitch horseshoes. I can show them how, but you’ve got to do your own thing. You’ve got to get your own rhythm going,” said Georgia, Oklahoma Horseshoe Hall of Fame winner. “I used to eat, sleep and breathe horseshoes,” laughs Donna, the North Dakota Horseshoe Hall of Fame winner, horseshoe jewelry adorning both women’s bod-W ies. f With 55 participants in this year’s two-o day event, braving the cold temperatures5 and sultry skies, ODonnell was thrilled asE she awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronzes awards. As usual, no matter who won, ev-Q eryone cheered everyone – good spirits3 had by all. I m a 3 T e t C T n o f
