SPECIAL TAKE HOME ISSUE! Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 32, No. 21 © 2019 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, March 06, 2019 From the Publisher Golf Cart Rodeo can be perilous! Become a Winter Texan Ambassador
Winter Texans tell me everyday they love coming to the Rio Grande Jim Brunson Valley where they can get outdoors and have fun during the winter months without having to worry about snowstorms and frigid temperatures. You tell us you enjoy all the great entertainment, the friendly people and the low cost of living – especially when compared to other resort areas such as Florida and Arizona. And you enjoy coming back each year meeting up with all the good friends you have made in your park or resort in South Texas. So, what could make your winter here even better next year? Having your friends from up north come down and share the good times together. Become a Winter Texan Ambassador by taking some copies of our March 13 Take Home Edition of the Winter Texan Times with you to share with your friends and neighbors back home. Yes, you can choose which neighbors you invite to come down – just in case you See AMBASSADOR pg. 25
SUNDAY MARCH 10, 2019
By Kathy Olivarez When Winter Texan Times Publisher Jim Brunson told me he was intrigued by the item in the calendar stating Chimney Park RV Resort in Mission was having a golf cart rodeo, and told me to check it out, I had no idea what it was. Now in its ninth year at Chimney Park, I found that the driver and his/her assistant must complete a 150-yard course which consisted of weaving in and out of three milk or water jugs full of water and then circling a plastic barrel in the road twice before pulling into the driver’s pit and the end of the course. The grass on the edges of the course also had intermittent water bottles. While it sounds easy enough, there is one small problem. The driver is driving blind, wearing goggles covered with Gorilla tape. His assistant is supposed to guide him by tapping him on the left shoulder if he is to go left and the right shoulder if he is to go right. Drivers are scored on the time it took them to comSee RODEO pg. 26
Activity Directors honored at Appreciation Day
By Henry Miller Activity directors carry the wrong title. It’s not inaccurate, per se, but it doesn’t truly reflect the scope of their many duties are – kind of like being a mom. Something more to the effect of Super-uber-non-stop-movers-and-shakers and lifeblood of their park seems a little more accurate. But that sure would take up a lot of space on those little name tags they wear. Robert and Billie Ferguson have previously been activity directors for more than a decade. Robert has been the RGV Activity Director Association’s president for 10 of the past 12 years. He and his wife Billie know first-hand how much time and effort goes into being an activity director, the honest-to-goodness lifeblood of any Winter Texan resort. As an expression of appreciation for all the hard work performed day after day by activity directors, they organized the first annual Activity Director’s Appreciation Day, which was held Friday, March 1 at Southern Comfort RV Resort in Weslaco. hear, and when your nose is plugged, you’ll sound like Willie Nelson,” said Rierson, a Kansas native. “I think every singer has their own things they do. I used peppermint essential oil and loads of jalapenos and hot sauce. It seems to help melt out the crud.” Rierson made his first trip to the Valley last year for the Winter Texan Entertainers’ Showcase. He drove from the snowy and icy tundra of Kansas to South Texas with a broken heater and said he had to make several stops just to thaw out. The trip, however, was a good one as he has remained busy throughout the Winter season. Rierson, tagged as a country music traditionalist, grew up on the family farm in South central Kansas and earned a master’s degree in animal science from Kansas State. He has released several albums, toured across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Scotland and London and enjoys writing and singing about the positive aspects of life, while also reflecting on events and people who have played a major role in his life. He performed a little bit of all those influences while at Trophy Gardens. Despite being under the weather, Rierson still packed 15 songs into just the first half of his show, including “I Believe in Love,” “Long Black Train,” and the hilarious “Charmin Song.”
(Sister Park to Rio Valley Esta
By Henry Miller Rusty Rierson has rocketed in popularity to rapidly become one of Winter Texans’ favorite entertainers. Not only did he earn the Valley Star Award’s Male Vocalist of the Year, but he did so in this, his first full year performing in the Rio Grande Valley. While the park activity directors select the nominees for the Valley Star Awards, it’s the Winter Texans who cast their votes to choose the winners. Much of that popularity has to do with his wit, friendly demeanor and, of course, his smooth vocals. Recently, however, at Trophy Gardens RV Park, his vocals weren’t where he wanted them to be as he came down with a rough case of the crud. And while his vocals weren’t where he may have wanted them, his show went off without a hitch in front of more than 200 who were ready to see this Valley newcomer who is on a meteoric rise. “I feel like a cowboy boot that stepped in a flaming pile of crap, then thrown in a wood chipper and then used as mulch for landscaping in Nancy Pelosi’s backyard,” he joked with the crowd. “We had the show scheduled for more than a year but I was so sick that night,” he explains. The audience, however, didn’t seem to notice as they laughed at his “Let’s Go To Texas,” a song that he wrote especially for South Texas and Winter Texans. They sang along with favorites such as “Sweet Caroline,” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” “He sounds terrific,” said Ralph Brulli, a Trophy Gardens resident who had seen Rierson before. “He puts on a great show and didn’t let him being sick stop him from performing.” That respect Rierson has for his shows, the parks and audiences is another reason why he’s become so popular so quickly. Even with “the crud,” his emotional vocal style was still highlighted and his wide range of songs from romantic ballads to playful songs with comical lyrics to classics such as Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” still performed without notice of being sick. In fact, one person from the audience said it made his Johnny Cash songs even better. Rierson said as a performer, being sick is more than just feeling bad and each entertainer has dealt with that situation and all have some type of remedy. “When your ears are plugged you can’t

From pg. 4 C melody sax, a rare instrument that almost saw its extinction when makers halted production in the 1930s but is making a quiet comeback, he’s even more of a show-stopper on his first musical love, the trumpet. “I had some back problems and stomach problems so I don’t play the trumpet for now,” he said. “But that’s my first and main instrument.” “But the C melody was made in the right key to play for country bands,” he added. “Those jams play in a lot of sharps and that’s one of the things this was made for.” In the meantime, you can find Ike at different jams from Split Rail to Green Gate Grove, Enchanted Valley, Paradise Park (“both Paradise Parks,” he said) and Pharr South, among others. Looking around the room once again, dozens of musicians’ stories are out there waiting to be told. Another is of Fred Dorisse. Dorisse is an Indiana native who spent 40 years as a settled pastor in three different states – Montana, New Mexico and Indiana before retiring (even though he still oversees about six congregations for the Christian Church of the Disciples). Dorisse is just sitting on the floor sec-
etly as to harmonize with the musicians on stage. He’s always smiling – always – a joyful smile that says to the world “I’m very much at peace,” and it’s contagious. Dorisse, who worked at his dad’s meat market, cutting up meat for ranches, sang “I’m an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande,” and played his guitar. But guitar wasn’t the first instrument he learned to play – and it’s not going to be his last. “My mother taught me piano when I was in first grade and then in high school I was involved with all sorts of music,” Dorisse said. “I was in band and chorus and a quartet and octet and mixed octet and anything I could with music.” Now, Dorisse is learning to play the ukulele and banjo ukulele. “I’m self-teaching myself,” he said. “It’s coming along slowly, but it’s coming.” Dorisse has been coming to the Valley for five of the past six years. He said the stayed home one winter to support their children and prematurely born grandson. He added that while Florida is closer to them, he and his wife made a great decision to come to the Valley. “We had friends who were coming to the Valley and we looked up Split Rail and loved the name, the amenities and the price,” he said. “We’ve never regretted it since.”

A new exhibit opens this week at Mission Historical Museum. The special exhibit, “The Traditions and Culture of Mexican Textiles & Designs,” incorporates seven beautiful Mexican dresses, each representing a different region in Mexico. The dresses are part of a cultural exchange through Mission’s Sister City program. “This exhibit is beautiful and one of a kind in the Valley, created to develop a learning experience for everyone to appreciate and enjoy,” said Cynthia Stojanovic, director of Mission Historical Museum. The City of Mission has been a partner in Sister Cities International since 1993 and currently has relationships with 24 Sister Cities from Mexico, Panama and Guatemala. The exhibit examines the distinctive styles of dress for each region represented, including the artistic elements, the area’s products, architecture and lifestyle reflected in the dresses’ unique designs. Sister Cities International was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to foster friendship, peace and prosperity between people from different cities around the world.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Mission’s Sister Cities Committee, and generous donors to the museum. The exhibit opened Feb. 26 and will continue through April 2019. Admission is free to the public. Museum hours are Tuesday thru Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Mission Lions Club Market Days is Saturday
The Mission Lions Club is planning a new outlet for artisans, craftsmen, artists and small businesses to sell their products with very little overhead. The new citywide venue is Mission Lions Market Days. Mission Lions Market Days will be held on the second Saturday of each month in March and April, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the newly renovated Leo Pena Placita Park in downtown Mission. The park is located at Conway Ave. and 9th Street (Business 83), across from H-E-B. The event will feature food, vendors, free Community Bingo games, door prizes and music for a festive, inviting atmosphere. The public is invited, and admission is free. Non-profit organizations can also use the event to help raise funds for their group, receiving a special non-profit rate for a booth at Mission Market Days. Commercial booths will also be available for local businesses. “We invite the entire community to come out and join the fun,” said Mission Lions Club President, Adela Ortega. “We are going to have bingo games with lots of prizes to be awarded, mu-
sic, arts and crafts items for sale, food and beverages, and much more. Come join us this Saturday to Leo Pena Placita Park in downtown Mission.” The Mission Lions Club provides a wide range of services for the community, such as free eye glasses for school children whose families cannot afford them, and the club performs hundreds of vision screenings for school children, helping detect vision problems at an early age. The club regularly builds wheel chair ramps for those who need one. In addition, the club supports the Texas Lions Camp for children with disabilities, the RGV Diabetes Association, the Mission Food Pantry and many other causes that benefit the community. Ortega said the club hopes Mission Lions Market Days will become a way for the club to raise additional funds for the club’s charitable work. So, she invites the public to come out and support the club and the vendors who are participating. For more information, to register as a vendor, or to reserve a commercial booth, contact Adela Ortega at 956-4589066.

STAY WITH US
FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Thank You RGV for a wonderful stay! We love it here! It’s just like visiting family! After our stay in the RGV, we traveled to Arizona for several shows; where I also went horseback riding in the Superstition Mountains. On this certain day I was done riding & I yelled out into the canyon, “best day ever”, when at that very moment I got the news through text I won 2019 FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR; that’s when I yelled, “best day ever…GOT EVEN BETTER”! Steve Ray Nelson & I want to say THANK YOU for all your support at our shows & all of you for just being friends!

MARCH 06, 2019 23 www.wttrgv.com
Victoria Palms hosts 22nd Annual Style Show The 22nd annual Victoria Palms Style Show and Luncheon proved once again that fashion never dies, it just changes over time – and sometimes it reverts back to fashions of yesteryear. A crowd of 267 people took in fashions from locally owned stores, including Boots n Jeans, Lionel’s Western Wear and Boutique and Wells, all from Weslaco, along with Bec’s Fashions in McAllen. Each store dressed four models from Victoria Palms and had a runway set up to explain the new fashions. While most were country and western themed, there was a wide variety including handbags, exotic earrings, bonnets, boots, dresses, jeans and more. A model would walk onto the stage, and then walk the runway, which extended into the middle of the banquet hall, as an emcee from each store explained in detail every item the model wore. Afterwards, the model would walk through the crowd, giving them all and up close look at the latest trends. “People really enjoy this event; that’s why it has kept going for so long,” said Victoria Palms Activity Director Lori Fanaselle. “It’s a great partnership with the local stores and giving them an opportunity to showcase what they have.”

MARCH 06, 2019 APPRECIATION
From pg. 1 More than 100 activity directors and park managers attended the party to thank those who spend their time organizing the goings-on at their respective parks. “We just wanted to recognize the activity directors and show appreciation for them,” Robert said. “Nobody really knows all the things that they do, except for them. And a good activity director is critical to the success of any park.” A star-studded entertainment lineup gave the directors an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the performers they spend many hours trying to book for their residents. Entertainers included Helen Russell and Co., Mr. Pickpocket Gene Turner, Rusty Rierson, Dave & Daphne and Spittin’ Image. The entertainers all expressed their appreciation for the activity directors as well, as they provided many laughs and great entertainment. Most of the entertainers were named entertainers of the year for their respective categories at the recent Valley Star Awards Show, which recognizes the best of the best Wintertainers™ who perform in the Rio Grande Valley. The entertainers enjoyed performing together for the celebration, joking back and forth with one another. After Dave

Salyer (of Dave and Daphne) performed a standing-ovation electrifying version of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” on guitar, Brian Swabb, one half of the twin brother musical comedy act said “that wasn’t bad Dave, maybe with a few more years practice you’ll learn how to play guitar.” Salyer quickly barbed back “make a CD.” Robert Ferguson said the entertainers volunteered their time for the event and added he could have lined up 20 more entertainers, all wanting to show their thanks and appreciation for the tremendous work of the activity directors. The day definitely gave activity directors and all those in attendance a relaxing escape from the rigors of daily activity-directing. “We decided just to throw a party and appreciate all those involved,” said Ferguson, who is stepping down as president of the association, but promised to stay involved with other events. “We’re not going away,” he said. He and Billie will continue to coordinate the two Winter Texan entertainers’ showcases where about 30-35 entertainers audition at each event and are given nine minutes to try and impress the hundreds of activity and/ or entertainment directors in attendance with hopes of getting bookings for the following year. The event has been an annual hit and a great resource for activity directors as they search for great

Robert Ferguson entertainment for their parks and resorts. The Winter Texan Times co-sponsored the free luncheon for the Activity Director Appreciation Day event, along with the Activity Director Association and other sponsors. Dozens and dozens of door prizes were given away and the Fergusons made sure no one went away empty-handed. Jim Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times, also expressed his appreciation for the resort activity directors. Recognizing the tremendous amount of
Dave of Dave & Daphne hard work they put in as they plan, organize and carry out activities for their park residents. “You are the heart and soul of the parks,” Brunson said. “We appreciate all that you do to make the winters fun and enjoyable for our Winter Texan friends.” Robert Ferguson said Activity Directors Appreciation Day will be held March 1 each year and encouraged all park residents to express their appreciation to their activity directors for all the hard work they do.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES AMBASSADORS
www.wintertexantimes.com
From pg. 1 have one of those pesky neighbors that you’d rather leave behind. So, what does a Winter Texan Ambassador do? In a word, brag. We’re pretty good about bragging about Texas, and I’m sure you’ll find lots to brag about and maybe make the folks back home wish there were here too. Tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s plenty of that here in Texas, including some really good country-western bands and even jam sessions for you musicians. If their preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, tell ‘em they’ll not be disappointed. There
are lots of talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other areas to perform here during the winter season. Tell ‘em about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Everything costs less in the Rio Grande Valley – especially the local citrus and produce. Housing is much less expensive too – especially compared to the Florida retirement communities. It’s a great place to make their retirement dollars stretch further, enabling them to enjoy a great lifestyle with thier friends in Deep South Texas. Tell your friends and family it’s SAFE here. The Rio Grande Valley has some of the lowest crime rates in the country. And with all the increased law enforcement man power now patrolling the entire Valley, it’s safer than ever.

Give us a call at 956-580-7800 to reserve some extra copies of our March 13 Take Home Edition and take some home with you when you leave the Valley. Most people take 10, 20 or 30 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. If you only need a few copies, pick up a few extras at your park/resort when we deliver the edition on March 13. If you want 10 or more copies, call us and we’ll deliver a separate bundle to the park with your name on it. If you are leaving before March 13, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home. If you live near a popular RVer’s vacation spot up north, you could take
some copies of the paper to some of the resorts in your home state so the folks visiting there in the summer months can come spend their winters with us in Texas. We’ll also be posting the Take Home Edition our website at www.wintertexantimes.com and on our Facebook page, so you can share this special edition through email and Facebook as well. Call us right now, even if it’s after business hours; you can always leave a message. Or you can email us at news@ wintertexantimes.com. If possible, we’ll need your paper requests by Friday, March 8 so we can print enough papers for everyone. Don’t’ leave the Valley without at least a handful of extra copies of the Winter Texan Times to share. Our number is 956-580-7800.

MARCH 06, 2019 RODEO
From pg. 1 plete the course and whether or not they stayed on the track. The first team up was the Missouri Mules, Mark and Sandy. They managed a couple of weaves but ran over one of the bottles in the middle but then got back on course. That is, until they got to the barrel. They went around once but on the second turn, they straightened out too soon had headed into a yard. From where I was sitting I could not tell if they came closer to hitting another golf cart or the satellite in front of the mobile home on the lock. Fortunately, with hundreds of voices yelling “Stop!” they stopped just in time. But it took a little while to get back on the road going in the right direction! Terry Swanson, who sat next to me, said after going around the barrel twice it is very easy to get disoriented and not know where to go. He said the course looks easy but is very difficult to do blindfolded. Farmers Jeff and Chris fared much better but managed to hit one water bottle close to the barrel. Alex and Jay followed with a good ride and no incidences. Then came Sugar and Spice. They ran over two water bottles on the right side of the course then pulled so hard to the left they ran up on the grass and they almost hit the Winter Texan Times photographer who was on his knees waiting to take a shot as they went by. Young and agile, he jumped out of the way but still

took a bath when they ran over a bottle on the side that was filled with water that spurted in his direction. (I hear he may be asking for perilous pay on similar assignments!) The Missourians had a good ride while the Hot Bitches caused some spectators to move quickly when they overshot the course and backed up too far. that. Swanson turned to me and said, “I love it when that happens because the driver can’t see where she is pointing. It happens every year!” Trophy Girl and Larry hit a few bottles and drove so far up on the grass the crowd was yelling “Stop!” Mark and Sandy went so far off the course they almost hit the barn when they circled the barrel. After the event, which ended with no casualties, but a lot of laughter and good humor, prizes were awarded. The Missouri Mules, Mark and Sandy Morrison, were awarded to boobie prize, which consisted of a large pair of crocheted boobs! First place went to Two Canutes, Jon and Rob Erb, with a score of 1.48; second place went to Wild Ones, John and Judy Kolisa, with a score of 1.56; and third place went to Alex and Jay Marten with a score of 1.59. Activity Director Linda Olson said it -was the ninth annual golf cart rodeo and oresidents would be looking forward to danother one next year. And she thanked nMike Serstadt who announced the event oand Ron Egan who created the event nine years ago and acted as chairman and time ekeeper this year. She invited residents to !get in line for the hot dog dinner that folflowed the event.
