Winter Texans enjoy softball at any age
Canada team takes down USA, again
By Kathy Olivarez Spirits were high among fans and players on Wednesday, March 4, when the final games of the Winter Texan Senior Softball season were played at Westside Park in McAllen. Fans were waving flags and enjoying watching the friendly rivalry. Nancy McKeown, of Ontario, showed her spirit with a Canadian flag on the bridge of her nose. Her husband Steve plays in the Leisure League, the middle level of competition. He is also the team clown. In the competitive league players were moving quacking through the game tied at 7-7 at the beginning of the fourth inning. For a while it seemed as if the action was over as balls were being caught and the players were out as soon as they hit the balls. Adding a little life to the Senior Softball games, and perhaps a little distraction for Then a player hit a fastball that almost the opposing team, Canadian team catcher Steve McKeown, of Ontario, wore a hula See SOFTBALL pg. 29 skirt and coconut shells.

Betty Rydell Show offers a variety of entertainment
By Kathy Olivarez A talented singer and musician, Betty Rydell started a recent show at Valley View Estates, in Mission, doing a yodeling song, “Chime Bells.” This she followed with a fiddle performance of “Boil Them Cabbages Down,” displaying her multi-talents and versatility as an entertainer. Displaying a knack for humor as well as musical talent, together Betty and her husband Ed performed a song where Ed sang, “I’m going to wear the pants in this family,” and Betty answered singing, “And I’ll tell him which pair to wear,” bringing smiles and laughter to the audience. Then the two paid tribute to The Everly Brothers by singing “Let It Be Me” and “Dream.” Betty once again showed off her instrumental talent, playing “Under the Double Eagle” on guitar before singing “Unchained Melody,” requested by a person in the audience. Switching gears, Betty noted everyone still loved Elvis and picked Ernie Hart, a bus driver who brought 39 people from Parker’s Prairie, Minnesota to the show, to play Elvis. He brings a busload of folks down each year to check out the Rio Grande Valley as a possible place to retire. She dressed him in a red cape, a wig and large sunglasses to dance while she sang, “Burnin’ Love” to the audience.
Betty and Ed She then sang a number of songs including “These Boots Were Made for Walkin’, which she said she had to learn after Ed told the Winter Texan Times it was part of her show. Others included “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden,” “Crazy,” and a medley of songs including “Four Leaf Clover,” and “You Are My Sunshine,” where she asked for audience participation. Ed gave her Betty a moment to rest, singing the song he picked for his funeral with the lines, “Send Me to Glory in a Glad Bag,” and “Swing low, sweet sanitation See BETTY RYDELL pg. 30
Gala of Royal Horses coming to State Farm Arena
For the first time ever, the Gala of the Royal Horses North American, world-renowned equestrian tour is coming to Hidalgo’s State Farm Arena on Thursday, March 26. Audiences will experience the excitement, splendor, and majesty of the Gala of the Royal Horses for the first time as the show makes its US debut. The Gala of the Royal Horses combines beautiful horses with live performers creating a breathtaking event for the entire family. Audiences are amazed at the training these horses have had that enables them to dance, march, walk and turn in circles while standing on the hind legs and much more. Following in the family footsteps of seven generations, Rene Gasser, producer of the Royal Horses has recreated a show for this tour only previously seen at the famous riding schools in Vienna and Spain. The royal horses of Europe are some of the most celebrated in history, favored for centuries by royalty, equestrian riders and bullfighters; this performance will celebrate the tradition, athleticism and grace of these revered creatures. “The unique qualities of the Roy-
al Horses single them out from all other breeds in the equine world. Their physical beauty and grace, coupled with exceptional courage and nobility make them an object of admiration and a source of inspiration for horse lovers everywhere,” says Gasser. Along with the magnificent stallions, Spanish flamenco dancers will be featured in authentic vibrant costumes accompanied by the mellow notes of a guitar to bring the sights and sounds of Spain to South Texas. The show will feature a number of performances involving the Andalusian, Friesian, Lipizzaner and Arabian horse breeds. The event is dedicated to showing off the maneuvers these horses are capable of including the stunning maneuvers once used on the battlefield now known as “The Airs Above The Ground.” "We're going to have horses dancing alongside some tremendous flamenco dancers, and I think people are really going to be excited about watching this," Gasser says. Tickets start at $25, and there are a limSee ROYAL HORSES pg. 18

Texas Gulf Trawling offers shrimp boil and tours
If you love to eat shrimp, if you are fascinated by marine life – or if you’re just plain curious – the Texas Gulf Trawling Shrimp Boil & Tour is just for you. This is a dockside tour of a shrimp trawler boat located at Zimco Marine in the ship basin near Brownsville. The tour is packed with interesting information, such as why domestic wild caught shrimp is the best shrimp money can buy. The tour is led by Greg Londries, great-grandson of the marina’s founder. He is very knowledgeable about the shrimp industry, the processes involved in catching the shrimp and keeping them fresh until they can be sold, as well as the ups and downs of the shrimp market. A great lover of good shrimp, I decided to take the tour and see what it was all

about. While the boat cannot leave the dock, visitors get to tour the trawler and hear a guide explain how the it works. Afterwards, the tour guests are treated to some freshly cooked, wild caught Gulf shrimp so they can taste the difference. Tours are held daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m. The shrimp boats in the fleet are 70 feet long by 20 feet wide and sit in the water at a depth of 10 feet. Each boat has four diesel engines. Two engines move the boat and the other two run the generator for the cooling system. The boats carry about 30,000 gallons of water and have freezers capable of holding 55,000 pounds of shrimp. The freezers keep the shrimp at a temperature of zero to minus ten degrees while they are on board. Zimco ships travel between the Rio Grande Valley and the Louisiana coast, as they look for brown shrimp that are found in the deep waters – usually about 50 to 150 miles off the coast, typically in water about 200 feet deep. Harley Londries, led a tour of the shrimping boat. Harley said the female shrimp come into the bay and lay their eggs in October and November. ShrimpSee TOURS pg. 30

From pg. 01 saying Canada. Some had Canadian flags painted on their faces. Joanne and Jerry Hoogstra, of La Salle, Ontario, were in charge of arrangements. They were assisted by Mary Jane and Ray Deschamps, Moe and Doe Parent, and Bonnie and Bob Gibb. The committee starts collecting all kinds of prizes, including blankets, caps, koozies, scarves and other items that had a leaf print representing Canada or the word Canada on them. The biggest door prize this year was a handmade quilt with maple leaves on it. The quilt was made by Mary Jane Deschamps to be given away at the event. Joanne said the Riverside Club gave them the room free of charge and provided the band, which went a long way toward keeping the cost of the event down. The provinces of Canada were well represented with only Prince Edward Island and British Columbia missing. The largest group was from Ontario with Manitoba coming in second place. Hope and Garth Jones came from News Brunswick on the eastern coast of Canada. They come to Texas every other year. During the off years they enjoy going to Myrtle Beach. In Texas, they spend three months and spend another month and a half traveling around the United States, visiting places like Branson, Nashville and Virginia on the way home.

ABOVE: Hope & Garth Jones; New Brunswick. RIGHT: Canada Day planners and volunteers. Don and Verna Lee of Alberta were attending their first Canada Day. They also come to Texas every other year. On off years they visit Mexico, Hawaii or Europe. Claude and Jeanne Parent and Mario and Lucette Grenier are from Quebec. They were enjoying the day. “No golf today,” smiled Claude. “Usually we play golf everyday.” The two couples live in Pleasant Valley, in Mission, and have been coming to the Valley four years. Betty and Jim Devereaux are from Bellville, Ontario. They have been coming to the Valley five years. Betty is a third generation Winter Texan. First, her great aunt came for the winter and her parents followed. Now she and Jim are coming. Mike McIntosh, of Manitoba, is enjoy-
ing the weather here in spite of the fact it has been unusually cold and wet for the Valley. “It’s been 30 degrees below Celsius back home, so I would rather be here,” he explained. McIntosh’s friends, Terry and Lucy Highmoor said, “We live at the other end of Highway 83, approximately 2000 miles north in Manitoba. We live where it starts so we come straight down 83,which goes from Swan River to Brownsville. They have been coming to the Valley for five years and attending the Canada event for two years. Finding out I was the editor of the Winter Texan Times, Mike told me, “Great pa-
per! It tells me where the hell I ought to be!” He has especially been enjoying the Valley since he met Blanca Saenz, formerly of Reynosa, who is now his fiancée. Roger Miller first came to the Valley in his youth when his father came to farm land purchased by growers from Ontario after Falcon Dam was completed and the irrigation system was in. They planted citrus and alfalfa. There was a freeze that wiped out the citrus, and the alfalfa also froze so his family went back to Canada. For those who missed this year’s celebration the next Winter Texan Canada Day will be March 1, 2016 at Riverside Cub from 1 to 4 p.m.

From pg. 01 in South Texas, works hard to see that his Native American heritage is preserved. At one time the Apache roamed from the mouth of the Rio Grande to the Alpine Mountains of West Texas. They traveled as far north as San Antonio and as far south a Mexico City. As happened in other parts of the country, the ways and customs of the Apache clashed with the settlers coming into Texas. A law was passed in 1837 that required all Indians in Texas to be put on a reservation. Although there is no official Apache reservation, some were sent to reservations in Oklahoma. The federal government put a bounty on their heads, and many of the Apache escaped into Northern Mexico where they lived with the Kickapoo tribe and began assimilation into the Mexican culture. This was difficult for the Apaches who were hunters and gatherers, not farmers and ranchers. In an effort to quell the last of the Indian uprisings in 1875, General McKensie was sent by President Andrew Jackson to clear Texas of all Indians. In May of 1875, many of the Apaches who had fled into Mexico were either killed or captured. Others escaped and hid in the mountains. Soto’s ancestors were among those who hid in the mountains for the next 25 years. Around 1900 they began returning to Texas and settled around the Uvalde
area. By then there were only 123 Lipan Apache left. The survivors came from three distinct groups: the People of the Desert, the People of the Forest, and the People of Big Water, which included those who lived along the Rio Grande. When the first Apache met the Spanish Conquistadors, they asked what they called the area. They were told “Komitsa” which means big water in Apache. The Spaniards changed it to Big River or Rio Grande. Soto takes pride in the fact the Rio Grande River’s name originated with his ancestors. Visitors are welcome to come by and stay for an hour or stay for the day and see the grace of the gourd dancers and many other dances and activities celebrating the heritage of the Lipan Apache and other Native Americans. Admission is free.

Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.

From pg. 01 hit the pitcher in the stomach. He managed to catch it and sent it flying to first base where the first baseman fell down trying to catch it. In spite of that play, Canada/Texas held the US to no runs. While watching the games, one of the wives explained some of the rules of senior softball. Each player starts with a ball and strike so there are only two strikes and three balls per batter. First base has two bases to make it less likely players will collide. When running home, players do not run over the base, there is a line behind the base they must cross, again to avoid collisions. And there is a maximum of five runs scored per inning. If two players have already scored, and the bases are loaded and a home run is hit, only three of those who cross home get credit. He was scheduled to play in the Texas-Minnesota game cancelled. The oldest player on the field was 87-year-old Joseph Baum, who was a “right rover” on the Canadian team in the Leisure League. Because players from the United States outnumber Canadian players, most games players from Texas and Canada are paired. The number of local players is increasing and now about one quarter of the players are from Texas, according to Ed Martens, the local Senior Softball commissioner. The game between Recreational League teams was definitely more colorful with Canadian catcher Steve McKeown of Ontario who came up to bat wearing a jester hat. Unfortunately the joke was on him as the first ball he hit was caught and he was out. When he came out to catch, he wore co-

Another Canadian, Gary Burton, said he flies 3400 miles from Nova Scotia to play ball. In the box office, someone sang “Deep in the Heart of Texas” to remind players where they were. Almost finished, there were two runs resulting in a score of 6-5 with the USA triumphing over the Canadian/Texas team. The shrimp are then washed again and placed in a solution for freezing that will preserve them until the ship reaches shore.
