Winter Texans have their day at RGV Stock Show
By Luciano Guerra Bob and Betty Glick, of Tower Hill, Illinois, were among the hundreds of Winter Texans that visited the 75th Annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show (RGVLS) during Winter Texan Day, March 12. Having made the drive to Mercedes from their winter home at Park Place Estates in Harlingen, they browsed through the art and photography on display in the Event Center, walked through the exhibit hall, visited the show’s museum and tasted some of the delicious foods. “We came over to eat,” chuckled Bob Glick. “We had lunch here. It was very good.” Unlike her hungrier half, Betty Glick had more on her mind than just food. “We went into some of the buildings to look at the paintings and the photography,” she said. “That was very interesting. Since then we’ve just been strolling along and whenever we see something we like we just stop and look.” “This is our 29th year in the Valley and we have been to the Livestock Show probably 10 or 15 times over the years,” added Richard and Mary Lou Dean of Osage, Iowa and Citrus Valley RV Park in McAllen Betty. “We always enjoy coming here, but have fun at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. Time to say ‘Good-bye’
Another season has gone by much too quickly and it is time to say good-bye – but only until next October when we hope to see you all again. Many Winter Texans have already started their treks home while others are waiting for warmer weather up north where cold winter temperatures still linger. This year has seen a change in entertainment with several new entertainers like Jim Greeninger, Kenny Hess and Mama’s Wranglers making their way through the Valley. Winter Texan favorites from Branson were back in the Valley again this season, including Gordy and Debbie, John Sanger, Gary Crain and many others too numerous to mention. The Redhead Express performed their last tour of the RGV, as the girls are now pursuing recording contracts, working with the producer who produced the Dixie Chicks and Martina McBride. Riding.” Like the Glicks, Don and Lynette Wisson, of Cambridge, Ontario Canada, chose to visit the Livestock Show on Winter Texan Day in order to take advantage of the discounted admission and parking rates. However, the Wissons, who spend their winters at Llano Grande RV Park in Mercedes, made a point of visiting the livestock barns to see the animals. “We arrived just after lunch,” said Lynette Wisson. “We usually go right to the animals. We watched some of the goat competition and then some of the cattle show, which was really interesting. We’re both teachers, so we enjoy seeing the kids show their animals. As it turned out, we stood next to a couple of teachers that had students in the ring, so we got some insight there.” “The judging of the animals is our favorite part of the show,” added Don Wisson. “We enjoy talking to the people around us; they’re always very friendly. We’ve found that that’s the nature of the Valley and that’s the reason we like it here.” See LIVESTOCK SHOW pg. 06
Valley’s music groups titillate Winter Texans By Roda Grubb Winter Texans flock to the Valley to play. Anything to do with music – listening or dancing –seems to be one of their favorite pastimes and one thing the Valley is never short of is music, in all genres and forms. One can find professional performers here from Branson, instrumental type bands and dance bands, symphony orchestras, choirs, and local talent who love sharing their gifts of music around the parks. On a recent night a magical concert drew 1500 Winter Texans to the Trinity Worship Center. During rehearsal I was able to talk to a few of the groups and found being retired did not mean leaving their music behind. The night featured a combined concert with the Men of A-Chord, Magic Valley Chorus, a Sweet Adeline chorus, Senior Ambassadors, and the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band. The concert was an outstanding success. However, only two of the groups were the foSee MUSIC GROUPS pg. 10

Edinburg Chamber bids WTs farewell with Annual Pachanga By Roda Grubb There is nothing quite so fun as to have a party for Winter Texans. They show up in droves and always seem to have a great time, no matter what you are doing. This day was the party for the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce to bid their Winter Texans adieu. “Hasta La Vista Pachanga is an event we have held every year for the past 26 years in March to bid farewell to our Winter Texans in order to show appreciation to them for coming to Edinburg and being in our city,” a delighted Letty Gonzalez, president, Edinburg Chamber, explained. “We are so happy to have them stay with us, shop with us and pass the word along encouraging others to come to Edinburg. We have a welcoming party at the beginning of the season and this pachanga at the end.” Joining the festivities at the Edinburg Activity Center, these Winter Texans were a happy group. First they were fed a meal and then turned loose on the dance floor to the sounds of Sipe and the Country Playboys. There were dancers galore in the jolly crowd, some there for just one thing – dancing! But don’t think for a second that’s the only draw. For many – it’s the people; they simply have friends they want to be with until heading north again. Take Mary Jo and Joe Doyle, for example.
Paul Adam and Joanne Beauparlant, of Citrus Mobile Park escape the cold of Canada and enjoy life’s little pleasures like dancing at the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce’s Hasta La Vista Pachanga. “Hi, I’m Mergatroy Makalovich,” said the perky woman sitting before me, a smile encompassing her whole body. “Really?” I asked at hearing the startling name. “No,” she laughed with gusto. “I’m Mary Jo Doyle.” Turns out this friendly
WT and hubby reside at Orange Grove RV Park, escaping south from Minnesota for three months of warmth. “It fooled us this year!” referring to the colder than usual winter the Valley has been experiencing. “We’ve been coming for 24 years for fun and the people. The
people are wonderful!” “We used to come for the shuffleboard and golf but I’ve outgrown them due to my rheumatism,” Joe piped up. “We do keep busy all the time while we’re here, though.” The next thing they did was introduce me to Elof and Lorraine Holmquist who have been coming to the Valley for 30 years. “It’s the warm weather we like and we make so many good friends down here. It’s always fun to come back. It feels like you’re home,” Lorraine was effervescent as she praised the Valley. “We’re usually down here for four to five months, so we get to really know people. We all go dancing, eating and just entertaining ourselves with lots of fun things inside and outside of the park. There are a lot of activities in the Edinburg area to go to, including this. We’re here today because of the dancing; this is our kind of music.” Truth be told, they’d also follow the polka, waltzes and schottische music trails. Citrus Mobile RV Park was also well represented on this brisk day in March. George Litke comes down for the weather, golfing and dancing. After losing his wife he moved over to Citrus Mobile and likes his decision. See PACHANGA pg. 23

WTs have good time while learning more of Texas history By Kathy Olivarez The annual Texas Independence Day celebration, held in San Benito, has been growing in size each year. This year it was held at the Cameron County Youth Fairgrounds, which was large enough to allow horses as part of the re-enactment shows and for a cook-off. The moment visitors arrive, they are greeted by the delicious scents of cooking meat wafting through the air. Rudy and Sharon Sandau and Arthur Stokes, all or Ontario, were taking in the sights. Having tasted some of the fair’s foods, Arthur pronounced the barbecued chicken to be “delicious,” and Sharon had been drafted into judging the tastiest beans. “It was interesting to see how beans are cooked in the Valley. At home we make our beans thicker with sauce more like a gravy. Here the sauce was watery, more like soup,” Sharon explained. There were a number of exhibits in the youth building that drew much attention. In one such exhibit was a woman named Janice Zezulka of Ocqueoc, Michigan who was demonstrating how to turn wool into thread. She spends her winters at Americana RV Resort in Mission and demonstrates her talents at shows such as this one. She brought wool from her Shetland sheep back home. Dressed as a pioneer woman, she was pedaling a spinning
wheel with her feet as she fed wool into the orifice that winds the wool thread onto the bobbin. Another interesting display was the bars of homemade soap made by Mike Mezmar, formerly of Pennsylvania, now of Harlingen. “True soap is one-half soap and one-half glycerin,” he said. “In the 1960s, soap manufacturers learned how to take the glycerin out of soap so it could be used to make nitroglycerin for bombs in Vietnam.” “The glycerin kept the skin soft and
smooth, but today’s soaps do not work that way and that is why people have so much dry skin and need conditioners for their hair,” he added. Mezmar makes his soap from a mixture of olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, water and lye, which is mixed according to a scientific formula. He adds things like rose petals, lavender, cinnamon and cloves, turmeric and lemon grass to give the soap pleasant scents. When the mixture was ready he poured it into wooden trays and let it set for a week before cutting it into

bars. Then he let the bars age another two months before selling them. Battle Re-enactments A total of three re-enactments were planned. The first was the Battle at Gonzalez where Mexican troops tried to capture the American’s canon and the American’s told them, “Come and get it!” Heading outside to see the next re-enactment, I found Joan Gibe, of Montana and South Padre Island, who loved the history the food and the music at the celebration. Mike Beall, formerly of Oregon, said he enjoyed learning the history being brought out in the enactments. He has lived in Texas two years now in Lyford and enjoys learning the history of his new home. The second was a re-enactment of the Battle of the Alamo, where Mexican troops defeated and killed the Americans inside the mission. The third was the Battle of San Jacinto where Sam Houston captured Santa Ana and gained Texas’ independence. The day was cool and pleasant and visitors enjoyed walking around seeing the displays between re-enactments. Outside there was a replica of an Apache teepee, which would have been used by the Indians who lived further north. In South TexSee INDEPENDENCE pg. 08

LIVESTOCK SHOW
From pg. 01 Don Wright and Pam Percira, of Du Quoin, Illinois, and of Big Valley Trailer Park in Donna, have been in the Valley since October and are planning on heading back north in a week or two. Like many of their fellow Winter Texans that spent at least part of the day enjoying the events and activities of this year’s RGVLS they look forward to visiting the show at least once each winter. “We usually come to the bull riding, but we’re not going to get to go this time,” shared Wright. “We’ve gone through the cattle barn and we’ve met up with a couple of people we know and we talked to them for a while. We always try to make it to at least one day of the show.” “I enjoy the exhibits and going through the different vendors,” added Percira. “We also watched some of the bull judging with the young people. It’s nice seeing young people doing things like that.” With the 2014 edition of the Rio Gary and Joan Schafbuch – Victor, IA Grande Valley Livestock Show now over, many of the Valley’s winter visitors will be taking fond memories of their visit to the largest stock show south of San Antonio back home with them. Whether those memories include animal judging, bull riding, the exhibit hall, the show museum or, as in the case of Bob Glick, the food, Winter Texan Day at the stock show will certainly help make their most recent winter in south Texas a memoBarbara Van Sickle and Mary Dewberry rable one. From pg. 05 as, according to Apache descendant Ruben Martinez, most of the Apache used brush huts because they were very nomadic. Martinez also had a number of arrowheads representing different Indian tribes on display. As he spoke to visitors, he was using rocks to form a small tool to be used for scraping animal skins. Visitors who went inside the teepee were amazed to learn that, despite the hole in the top of the teepee, the rain water never gets inside because the water would hit the poles at the top and run down the pole instead of into the teepee. The hole in the top was for smoke to escape. The Indians used small fires inside the teepees to keep warm and cook food. Inside the teepee, a number of items such as furs for bedding were on display, showing the everyday items used by the Apache. Pat Eisenlohr of Michigan said she found the tee-pee interesting. Roxie Valtinson of Minnesota said she enjoyed eating the ribs cooked over the open fire by the cowboys manning the cook-off. Ron Eisenlohr said he thought it would be fun to have been an Indian brave because, “All they had to do was go shoot a little game once in a while. The women had to do all the rest of the work while the men got to sit back and enjoy life.” Then he added he was very glad the Texas Revolution turned out the way it did with the Texans defeating the Mexican troops because he enjoyed spending his winter in South Texas where he was enjoying the culture and learning the history of Texas. He lives in Eastgate in Harlingen. Battle of the Alamo Re-enacted In the Alamo re-enactment, Santa Ana’s troops marched toward the Alamo, See INDEPENDENCE pg. 23

From pg. 01 cus of my attention for this story. “Sweet Adelines is an international organization with approximately 25,000 women around the world who sing fourpart harmony barbershop style. Everyone has to sing in English since Barbershop is a uniquely American art form,” Ann Wright, director of the Sweet Adelines, spoke about the organization she loves. “We have choruses in Japan, Sweden, New Zealand, for example, with a total of 13 countries outside the U.S.” Sweet Adelines were started in 1945 following in the paths of the men who had been singing barbershop harmony since the turn of the century. “During the war, the women grew tired of sitting around doing nothing when all the men were having so much fun. They decided to start up a group and Sweet Adelines was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma,” Ann’s eyes glowed as she confidently talked of the Sweet Adelines. “Magic Valley Chorus is based in McAllen. We have about 24 members, with the youngest in her late 50s and the oldest being 81.” Ann had attended a ladies luncheon in a park and the Chorus was the entertainment. “I loved how gorgeous they looked with their costumes, but when they blew the pitch pipe and the ladies instantly knew where their first notes were in the four part harmony – I got goose bumps.”

When we came down here I first played trumpet in the McAllen Town Symphonic Band and directed the Winter Texan Orchestra for 15 years. Through them I became involved with the RGV Concert Band,” said Gene, co-director with Gary Meidt for the last eight years. Linda Ingram has been playing the baritone sax for the last eight years. “I had retired and been down here a couple of years when I went to a community series Christmas concert at our church. Afterwards, I went up and talked to the band director to tell him how much I enjoyed it,” Linda’s face radiated with a happy glow. “I explained how I had played in high school but hadn’t played since nor did I have an instrument. He said they had one and would come by to talk to me. I think he wanted to see if I could read music,” she laughed. “I’ve been playing with them ever since.” Linda had followed her parents, and Gene his in-laws, to the Valley who had come 38 and 23 years ago, respectively. So it was natural for the Valley to become their winter home. Adding their music to the mix has made it ever so much more enjoyable. Surprisingly it isn’t all about the music. “I think it’s a real social thing. People get to know each other and love each other,” Gene smiles. See MUSIC GROUPS pg. 25

WINTER TEXAN TIMES INDEPENDENCE
From planting a blood red flag in the ground on the way, just as Santa Ana planted one in front of a church near the Alamo in 1836. The flag symbolized that none of the men would survive. It meant surrender or die, as Santa Ana was determined to put an end to the rebellion. For 12 days the Mexican army bombarded the Alamo. On the evening of March 5, the guns fell silent, lulling the men at the Alamo into a false sense of security and possibly to go to sleep. In the early morning hours of March 6, the Mexican army proceeded quietly toward the Alamo, quickly killing the outside guards before launching a full-scale attack. The troops were 100 yards from the Alamo when the shouts of “Viva Santa Ana, Viva
pg. 08 Mexico,” warned the defenders the battle was underway. To a man the defenders were killed. Santa Ana spared the women, younger children, and some slaves to spread the word to others to get out of Texas because the Mexican Army was coming. Instead, “Remember the Alamo” became a rallying cry for other Texans who joined with Sam Houston to defeat Santa Ana at San Jacinto. The San Benito Texas Independence Day is growing into an educational and entertaining event that has appeal for those who love Texas history or who just want to enjoy the food and entertainment. Look for it again next year and come on out and have a good time.

Living around Concordia, Kansas, for about 85 years, coming to the Valley obviously brings out the kid in him. When the music gets going, the line dancers slowly hit the floor, until there’s about 30 or 40 out there moving easily to the sounds of Sipe. Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
‘GOOD-BYE’
From pg. 01 teens into young women, Winter Texans will be rooting for their success. While they were not here this year, Link Union is expected to return to the Valley next year. And there will be new entertainers arriving on the scene next season, who hope to make a name for themselves in the Valley. Winter Texans keep up their park traditions such as the annual style shows, holiday celebrations and other special activities, in addition to the weekly jam sessions, luncheons, pancake breakfasts, or donut days that are traditions in their
parks. Our WT friends have enjoyed participating in community events such as the health fairs and expos, the welcoming and farewell events, as well as the Hidalgo Festival of Lights in December and the BorderFest in March. Many WTs enjoyed the Texas Independence Day celebration as well as Charro Days and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. Winter Texans also attended many of the programs put on by various museums throughout the Valley. Canyon Lake Builders keeps going to Progreso, Mexico to build homes for homeless, impoverished families. This year they completed their 440th home
MARCH 27, 2014
since the project began. And that’s just one example of the many projects Winter Texans carry out each year to help our local communities. The tradition of jams throughout the Valley continues, proving Winter Texans love their music. Square Dancing was a highlight for many; so many Winter Texans participate that the Rio Grande Valley is considered to be the Square Dance Capital of the USA. The Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild had its largest show ever this year at the McAllen Convention Center and many Winter Texans attended the annual event. Canadians enjoyed their traditional Canada Day celebration and the softball

games at Westside Park in McAllen with the Canadian team versus USA taking place with exuberant fans cheering both sides. It has been a good season and we have been blessed to get to know even more wonderful Winter Texans this year. We will be looking forward to your return in the fall. We will surely miss you while you’re away. Y’all come back ya hear! Kathy Olivarez, Editor Winter Texan Times
