Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Harlingen Heritage Museum Quinta Mazatlan presents Tony Schaub exhibit features new Prehistoric Trail

“On the Farm” is a feel good art exhibition currently being shown at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, 2425 Boxwood Street. Created by Tony Schaub, the exhibition looks at life “on the Farm.” The exhibit will run through Nov. 9. According to Schaub, the exhibit was “inspired by a rooster with an attitude” and features a large picture of that rooster. The exhibit consists of about forty new and original paintings, a couple of older pieces, and about a dozen three-dimensional works. It also uses videos, background music and performance art. Schaub describes himself as a visual entertainer who creates visual hilarity. He likes to combine the impossible producing very uplifting results. Schaub’s sense of humor will not hide from the spectator; for he thrives on having fun, let his imagination go and just see what happens. A native of Philadelphia, Schaub first came to Texas after graduating from high school while serving in the Air Force. He was stationed at Ellington Field near NASA. His life’s journey took him to work and play in San Francisco in the late ‘60s, and to Houston in the ‘70s where he became the “it” pop artist, and was even featured in Texas Monthly. A framed

magazine clipping of the story hangs on one of the walls in his Harlingen studio. In the late ‘70s he visited South Padre Island to paint the walls of his friend’s new restaurant: Blackbeard’s. He also painted works for the SPI Convention Center and Louis Backyard. In 2006, Schaub and his wife moved permanently to Harlingen where clients find him today. Since that time he has maintained an art studio on Jackson Street in Harlingen. Schaub expressed his admiration for Salvador Dali, Walt Disney and an English graffiti artist named Bansky. He is a fervent admirer of James Rosenquist; an American artist and one of the protagonists in the pop-art movement of the 1960s. This is the second time Schaub opens an exhibit at HA&HM. The first one titled “City Limits” opened in 2007. This one is a complete opposite, for his inspiration comes from the farm hence the title “On the Farm.” “Ultimately, we are a farm community,” he said. “We live in a tropical farm town, and that is where my inspiration for this exhibit came from.” Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call (956) 216-4901.

Visitors to Quinta Mazatlan will step back in time 150 million years ago at Quinta Mazatlan as they enter the Prehistoric Trail sponsored by McAllen South Rotary and Rotary District 5930. The new Jurassic Garden at Quinta Mazatlan features a Fossil Hill comprised of petrified wood, Jurassic plants and a bronze sculpture of the Archaeopteryx dinosaur. The dinosaur was referred to as the “first bird.” Paleontologists say it had a combination of reptilian features (teeth, clawed fingers, bony tail) and avian features (feather wings, wishbone). The Prehistoric Trail features living Sabal Palms in addition to Petrified Palmwood. Petrified Palmwood is properly referred to as a fossil rather than a stone, but it was named the official state stone of Texas in 1969. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset Drive one block south of La Plaza Mall on S. 10th Street. For more information contact Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 681-3370.

Harold’s County Kitchen: You Can Taste the Difference

Welcome Back Winter Texans Join Us At the Following Locations: Edinburg: 2301 W. University Dr. Harlingen: 4703 S. Expressway 77/83 Weslaco: 1416 W. Expressway 83

By Raquel Limas After the Second World War, Harold Lewsater and his family moved down to the Rio Grande Valley from Lewiston, Illinois to become a part of the citrus boom. In 1951, an incredible freeze took hold of the Valley and for two days the weather was below freezing. Seventy-five percent of the citrus trees, as well as many other crops were destroyed. Harold had to start over, literally from scratch. With great American vigor, Harold took to his know how and experience as a WWII US Army cook, and in 1959, transformed his personal home into one of the first family style cafeterias, located in Donna, Texas – the heart of the Rio Grande Valley. Using recipes that gave great comfort during his childhood, Harold would now feed and please a new retiring middle class that was beginning to venture down south during the winter season. For over 55 years, Harold’s Country Kitchen has served a southern comfort buffet to the Rio Grande Valley and our Winter Texan friends, alike. Recipes have been guarded, passed down, and taught carefully over the years, from one generation of cooks to the next. Each baker and cook perfected their technique for the southern fried chicken, sauerkraut & sausage, homemade dinner rolls and cornbread, using Harold’s mother’s and grandmother’s recipes. You can still find 1960s dinner staples with our glorified rice and chicken and dumplings. Whether its frying chicken or rolling enchiladas, our cooks take great pride in preparing our traditional meals, and occasionally adding a few new favorites. We are open for lunch seven days a week, from 11

a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to our famous lunch buffet, we specialize in Winter Texan reunions as well as bridal and baby showers in our private event rooms. We make each group feel as if their event is the most important of the year. We enjoy selling at festivals like Weslaco’s Onion Fest every year and have a special place in our hearts for the holidays. Between being open on Thanksgiving and Christmas day, school and local business catering, we serve thousands every year. We strive to make our facility festive and inviting, perfecting everything from our famous pecan pies and old fashion peach cobbler to our enchanting Christmas trees, wanting more than anything for our customers to feel as if they are coming home for the holidays. It is an honor to be a part of so many customers’ memories. We enjoy meeting so many amazing men and women not only from across the Valley, but the country as well. Thank you for your continued loyalty and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Come and taste the difference at Harold’s Country Kitchen!

According to the box office, this production is free of charge to viewers. A mystery-comedy production that is sure to be a hit among Winter Texans, “The Mystery of Shady Palms RV Park” by Eric Wiley will be performed Nov. 19-23. It is the traditional Mexican version of the joy and wonder of Christmas. It features posada songs, shepherds, an angel and the devil along with the Mexican custom of breaking a piñata. Fun for the entire family. The cost is not yet available. On March 4-8 “Evita” by Andrew Lloyd Weber will tell the colorful story of Eva Peron, second wife to Argentine dictator

Juan Peron in a musical format. Although she was born an illegitimate child, Eva became one of the most powerful women in Latin American by defending Argentina’s poor and working class residents. This production is reserved seating at $12 a ticket. For those who stay a bit longer or yearround Texans, “True West” by Sam Shepard will be presented April 29-May 3. What’s new at the National Butterfly Center? By Kathy Olivarez The butterflies are fluttering about everywhere you look and the new butterfly gardens are being planted at the National Butterfly Center (NBC) in Mission. Located conveniently close to Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, the butterfly center, just like the caterpillar, is undergoing a transformation with the construction of the new outdoor gardens dedicated to butterfly habitats. While there are different species of butterflies all year, November is the height of the butterfly migration south, and the cooler weather makes the beautiful butterfly gardens more comfortable for humans as well. So this is the perfect time to enjoy butterfly watching at the National Butterfly Center. More than 300 species of butterflies, some seen no further north than the Rio Grande Valley, have been spotted at the butterfly center and other butterfly hotspots across the Valley. The butterfly center’s new visitor’s center and headquarters building opened just two years ago. Outside the new building many butterflies have discovered the plants and water and decided to make stops there on their annual migrations. In

October, thousands of Queens have visited the center’s gardens to feast on the purple mist flowers. The growth of grass in front may look to a visitor unaware of the favored habitats of butterflies like it needs to be mowed.

But it is the perfect habitat for several types of butterflies. A new greenhouse located near the headquarters building houses native plants that attract butterflies that are for sale to those who want to create butterfly gardens in their yards.

Visitors entering the headquarters building may wonder about the bright chartreuse color on the walls inside the building. The color was selected to resemble what the inside of a butterfly chrysalis is like. The building houses display cases related to butterflies and a gift shop featuring all kinds of items for newly created Lepidopterists, better known as butterfly enthusiasts. A list of butterflies most commonly found at NBC and other nearby hotspots is available at the receptionist’s desk for those who are just getting interested in learning more about butterflies. Displays at the headquarters change from time to time. Currently, there is a display of butterfly quilts, “Butterfly Whirl,” that is part of a collection owned by the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange. The exhibit will be there through Feb. 8, 2015, with the exception of the days of the Texas Butterfly Festival to be held Nov.1-4, when it will be taken down to make room for special events and guest speakers. From pg. 23 building are under construction and should be completed by next April. According to Max Munoz, grounds manager, the gardens nearest to the buildings are being fashioned in the shape of butterfly wings. Each section of the wings will be planted in a special butterfly host plant. For example, milkweed is the host plant for Monarch butterflies, who lay their eggs on the leaves. When the caterpillars hatch, milkweed provides food for the growing caterpillar that also attaches its chrysalis to the plant. When the butterflies hatch, they feed on the nectar of the plant. Other butterflies prefer other plants. Each section will have a host plant that is known to attract a certain butterfly. In future years, the garden will host thousands of different butterflies because the variety of plants to be placed in the garden will attract the butterflies that use that plant as a host plant. Munoz said the first phase has only three acres in it, but phase two, which will add another three acres, is supposed to be started about the same time next year to be completed in 2016. Munoz said this phase would be called STAR, (South Texas Ayenia Refugio) honoring Ayenia Refugio, an endangered plant the garden will feature along with other plants. Government biologists want to see that this plant survives so having it planted at the butterfly center where it can be nurtured

is one way to assure its survival. Eventually, the 30 acres north of the levy along the Rio Grande will be filled with small butterfly gardens featuring host plants for the various butterflies that migrate through the Rio Grande Valley. Also, in the back near the original gardens, a large classroom/aviary is under construction. NBC has become a popular site for school field trips and the building will provide a place for the children to learn about butterflies in inclement weather and house a butterfly aviary where some butterflies will be raised through their lifecycle so children can observe all stages in a butterfly’s life. The original gardens, located on five acres north of the levee, are still open and have markers pointing out the host plants of various butterflies. Munoz said there is also development taking place on the other side of the levee fence near the Rio Grande River. Next year, NBC will be working with Ducks Unlimited to create a five-acre wetland that will offer habitat to migrating ducks as well as the butterflies that prefer a wetland habitat. Munoz also explained that NBC is not only for butterflies. Many species of birds, such as the elusive green jay, can be seen along with other species of wildlife such as snakes and tarantulas or mammals such as coyotes. Javalinas, who visit mostly at night to eat seed that fell during the day See WHAT’S NEW pg. 25

From pg. 24 from bird feeders, along with other small indigenous wildlife, can be found at NBC. Munoz added that rattlesnakes are rare because of the abundance of indigo snakes, which are natural enemies of rattlers and kill most of them. Indigo snakes are black but in the sunlight they look almost blue. NBC is located south of Expressway 83 west of Mission at 3333 Butterfly Park Drive. It can be easily accessed from In-
