94-year-old Lorene Alcorn is zip liner extraordinaire
Red Hat Ladies enjoy the trolley tour in Rio Grande City.
Trolley ride tells Rio Grande City’s rich history
By Kathy Olivarez Founded by Henry Clay Davis shortly after the Mexican-American War, Rio Grande City has a rich history. The city had its beginnings well before Fort Ringgold was established there in 1848 on the Rio Grande to help keep peace along the border. The Rio Grande City Main Street Program offers a narrated trolley ride to view the local historical sites. The trolley ride is about two hours long and takes visitors on a trip back in time when Rio Grande City was a town that was located near an active cavalry fort, and at the head of navigation for larger boats on the Rio Grande River. At the time of the Texas colonization in 1821, the area was still part of Mexico. After the Texas Revolution in 1836 it became part of Texas. There were numerous disputes, which led to the establishment of Fort Ringgold in 1848. Having had so much fun with the Winter Texan Red Hatters last season, I started a Red Hat group of my own during the summer. Our first outing was a trip to Rio Grande City to tour the La Borde House and see the historic hotel’s old bedrooms with mostly Victorian furnishings, and the baths with the high chain pull toilets and claw feet tubs. Of course we could not miss seeing the hotel’s entrance to the secret tunnel that once led to the banks of the Rio Grande before the river moved south in a 1933 hurricane. By Kathy Olivarez Lorene Alcorn, who resides in Llano Grande Lake Resort during winter months is now 94 years old and still going strong. She loves life and is not afraid to try anything. A petite little lady with a quiet voice, Lorene’s eyes radiant a love of life and the joy she has had in living it to the fullest. One of her biggest adventures occurred two years ago when she went zip lining in Honduras at the age of 92. She was down there with her son on a missionary venture. Lorene is an avid birder and the zip lining adventure was part of a birding trip where their group crossed a river four times and then crossed a 45-meter waterfall in their quest to see birds. She has been to Honduras nine times. Lorene’s son goes to Honduras on a medical mission sponsored by Crossing Community Church in Oklahoma City to treat indigent people and she often accompanies him. The zip lining trip was one of those occasions. “I thought it was so beautiful,” Lorene said. “I was not frightened at all,” she said in answer to the author’s question. “I Lorene Alcorn is shown riding a zip line across a huge waterfall in Honduras at the age of 92. Edinburg Scenic Wetlands offers adventures with nature
By Kathy Olivarez The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center was one of the first of nine satellites of the World Birding Center to open in March of 2003. Today, it is one of the busiest birding centers, offering a variety of birding opportunities and educational adventures to school children and Winter Texans alike.
It sits on 40 acres within a city park, near the heart of the City of Edinburg. Because it is built on reclaimed farmland and is next to the city’s effluent and floodwater ponds, it has developed into a prime location for waterfowl and other small animals that inhabit cities. The main building, referred to as the Interpretive Center, is located on 3.5 acres

of native butterfly habitat that includes two large wetland ponds, a canal, a dragonfly pond, Discovery Pond and more. There are also two and a half miles of walking trails that intersect with gardens and ponds. “The interpretive center has displays that have the sounds of specific birds that might be seen as well as details about those birds,” said Monica Barrera, park naturalist. “There is also a classroom where special classes are taught along with a special program called the Fifth Grade Wetlands Program, where all students attending Edinburg Independent School District learn about the importance of wetlands, and how to tell if the wetlands are healthy. Students do experiments, work with microscopes and study the creatures of the wetlands. Every child in the fifth grade in Edinburg goes through the program, which is very popular with the students.” In season the classroom is used for adult classes and Winter Texan events as well. “There is also a gift shop with field guides on birds, cooking with natural herbs and other nature oriented books and educational gifts,” Barrera added. Visitors to ESW/WBC can expect to see a variety of birds including Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Green-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Purple Martin and many others. Approximately 57 species of birds have been spotted at the center. It is also a great place to spot butterflies including the rare Ruby-spotted Swallowtail, the Rosita Patch, Silver Emperor, plus a variety of sulphurs, hairstreaks, skippers and others. Up to 75 species of butterflies have been spotted in the park. Some of the species spotted there are quite rare in Texas. ESW/WBC is also a great place to look for different species of dragonflies. Valley native plants like the Anacua, Crucita (great for butterflies), Texas Olive, Texas Prickly Poppy, Yucca and Turk’s Cap can be found on the grounds. “Low bushy plants like Betony Mist Flower and White Plumbago are great butterfly plants,” added Barrera. The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands has developed an extensive educational program for the Edinburg ISD, offering age appropriate activities from kindergarten through high school for students to learn more about this special habitat. There are

also programs for scout groups and other youth who may not be in the EISD. Many of their programs are especially designed to appeal to Winter Texans during the season. ESW/WBC offers Friday Night with a Naturalist held on the third Friday of each month. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the programs, which are free, run from 6 to 7 p.m. Programs will be held Nov. 20, Dec. 18, Jan. 15 and Feb. 19. Campfire Naturalist programs are from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and cost $5 for non-members. They will be held Nov. 12, Dec. 17, Jan. 14 and Feb. 18. Participants make campfire snacks and study the night dwellers and nocturnal animals that live at ESW/WBC. An adult birding series will be held Dec. 5, Dec. 19, Jan. 16, and Jan. 30 at 9:30 a.m. to provide tips and identification skills for new birders. There are bird walks on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. through February. Admission of $3 for adults and $2 for seniors, age 55 and older, to park applies. The iNaturalist walks are held Fridays at 4 p.m. through February. Spectacular Saturdays offer free admission. Two field trips to Rancho Lomitas are planned for Nov. 25 and Jan 22. Participants will learn about how native plants helped local people survive the harsh Valley environment and the medical heritage of the Rio Grande Valley from ethnobotanist Benito Trevino. Fees for this trip are $25. Call (956) 381-9922 to register for the trip. Volunteers are needed for the volunteer Planting Day on Thursday, Nov. 19 and for Project Martin Watch to be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, located at 714 Raul Longoria Road, offers a full range of classes for those who wish to learn more about birding and nature in the Rio Grande Valley. It also offers a chance to communicate with nature one-to-one for those who wish to go and explore on their own.

Welcome Back!
By Kathy Olivarez It’s been a long hot summer, but now the weather is simply delightful. The Rio Grande Valley has had a lot of rain this year, so everything outdoors is green and flourishing. Beautiful! If you’re still up north reading this article online, pack your bags and head south! It is gorgeous outside. With reports of cooler than normal temperatures up north, that means Winter Texans are heading down south for a funfilled winter. Lots of folks are already here enjoying the beautiful weather, and the RV parks and resorts are getting activities underway. We are enjoying pleasant temperatures, ranging from the 60s to mid-80s – just right for enjoying golf, swimming, going to the beach at South Padre Island, or just hanging out at the park with other Winter Texans. All the staff at the Winter Texan Times is glad to welcome our winter friends back for another great season of winter fun and relaxation with friends and neighbors. I drove to Houston recently for a 50th high school reunion. On the trip, I passed a number of motorhomes on the road – both coming and going. So I know it is time to get out and visit the parks and mingle with our Winter Texan friends so we can bring you all the latest news about what’s
happening here that’s of interest to Winter Texans. One man recently told me, “We can live, eat and do all sorts of things down here on what it costs to heat our house up north in winter.” He lived in northern Minnesota, so South Texas was a good alternative to a long harsh winter. As temperatures settle into that “perfect tropical paradise” zone, the Rio Grande Valley is ready for another fun season filled with high quality entertainment, special events and other activities related to the Winter Texan season. Look for quilt shows, Red Hat events, Branson entertainers and all the other trappings of a great Winter Texan winter in the Rio Grande Valley. And the restaurants, businesses and people of the Rio Grande Valley welcome the Winter Texans.

From pg. 1 guess you have to have a strong heart to be able to do it, but I enjoyed it.” She laughs about a recent adventure where her other son, Luke Alcorn, left her in the jungle looking for birds. The guide was horrified that he would leave her alone in the jungle, but the son told him not to worry, she would soon be back on her own. And she was! Lorene has also been on birding trips without her son. Lorene was an avid birder who stopped counting when her bird list topped 1400 birds. She has traveled to different parts of Mexico, with most of the Go with Jo tours that used to go into Mexico where she was able to spot birds not seen in the United States. She has also traveled to Costa Rica, and Belize looking for birds, but found she liked Panama best for birding. When asked what was her favorite bird out of all the birds she had seen, Lorene said she had never seen a bird she liked as much as the red cardinals so prevalent back home in Oklahoma. Prior to coming to the Rio Grande Valley Lorene was married and raised four children before starting a 25-year career as a kindergarten teacher. Lorene first came to Llano Grande in 1991 with her husband. She is now on her third residence in the park. After her husband died she stayed home, but when her son, Luke and
his wife Debi, bought a place and started coming to the Valley she started returning. She likes coming to the Valley because the people are friendly and the weather is great. “You get more value for your money here,” she explains. She also loves the Rio Grande Valley because of its diversity in birds. She has spent much time birding in different locations around the Valley during winter months. ‘It keeps me moving,” she adds. Luke attributes her longevity to her life in the Valley because she is out birding while friends at home are housebound because of snow and cold weather. When not birding, Lorene is active in the park. She recently organized a Saturday breakfast for those who are over 90 living in the park. “During the summer we have five members, but now we are up to eight. Before the season is over there may be more.” When asked if she had any special plans for the future, Lorene smiled and said, “When I get old, (about 100), I think I will take up counting butterflies!”

VWMT will hold Armistice Ceremony By Kathy Olivarez On Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. the Veterans War Memorial of Texas will hold an Armistice Day ceremony to honor veterans and fallen veterans of all wars. Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa will be keynote speaker and McAllen Mayor Jim Darling will give the welcome. Music provided by the McAllen High School band and choir will provide music for the ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. McAllen’s Fire and Police Departments will be participating in the event as those who perished in the bombings of the World Trade Center on 911 will also be remembered. According to Col. Frank Plummer, USAF (Ret.) who is in charge of the Veterans War Memorial, a special event in this year’s ceremony will be the dedication of a wall with names of soldiers from McAllen who were killed in action. The wall will be dedicated to the Veterans War Memorial of Texas by the McAllen High School Class of 1961, and many members of the class will be present for the dedication. As part of the ceremony, Jose “Wally” Cavazos will read each name on the wall and the fire department bell will be rung after each name is read. Following the dedication, the ceremony will end with a moment of silence followed by “Taps.” Following the ceremony a second cer-
emony will be held around the wall where family members of the fallen and members of the Class of 1961 can learn more about the wall. Plummer also stated that on Nov. 10 a group of 30 women from the Weslaco Literary Review Club would be visiting the wall and paying tribute to the fallen at 1:30 p.m. Veterans War Memorial of Texas is located to the east of the McAllen Convention Center on the corner of Galveston and 29th Streets, just north of Expressway 83 in McAllen.

2nd Street Bistro offers Mexican buffet
Winter Texans who want to get a taste of all kinds of Mexican food, including cabrito, which is not found in many Mexican restaurants, should plan to visit 2nd Street Bistro & Bar, located in the Doubletree Suites by Hilton at 1800 S. 2nd Street in McAllen. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors can choose from cabrito, beef and chicken fajitas, enchiladas, rice, charro beans, salsa and guacamole and then visit their taco bar, the salad bar, or choose the soup of the day to add to their meal before visiting the dessert bar. The meal includes the drink. And it is all for $11.95 with a 10 percent discount for Winter Texans over age 55. Members of the Winter Texan Times staff (Norma and Kathy) visited the restaurant together. Our first stop was to try the cabrito. Norma, who eats cabrito often, said it was excellent while Kathy found the enchiladas to be excellent. They also enjoyed the beef and chicken fajitas. There were two kinds of rice, regular Mexican rice and cilantro rice, to choose from along with several kinds of salsa. There was a large bowl of guacamole that had the flavor of tomato and onion but without large chunks in it. Very good!
When Kathy got in line for the taco bar, she asked for one taco. The lady in front of Kathy asked her why she was only having one. “They are so good you will be coming back for more,” she advised. After a visit to the salad bar, Norma said she really enjoyed the cilantro ranch dressing. Kathy selected a deviled egg, which Fernando Rocha, Food & Beverage Manager, said was combined with Ahi tuna. The tuna completely took the egg taste away and it was very tasty. Then it was off to the dessert bar, which was filled with sweet goodies. Norma found the chocolate cake wonderful. Kathy opted for the restaurant’s unique citrus flan with orange caramel. On Fridays, there is a seafood buffet for $12.95. Fernando also said the restaurant is known for its brick oven baked pizzas and for its dessert specialty of baked peaches with pecans and granola served warm with ice cream. A lover of anything with peaches, Kathy found it to be very good. There is also a daily happy hour with $2.50 brews and $4 cocktails, wines and special drinks. Wings, panchos and pizza can be purchased for $5. Don’t miss the 2nd Street Bistro &Bar. It’s a great place to have a leisurely meal with friends and relax.

November 5, 2015 WINTER TEXAN TIMES and steamers to ply its waters to Rio TROLLEY Grande City.
From pg. 1 ways been prominent along the border and the tunnels moved whiskey in and out of the country during Prohibition. La Borde House was first established as a hotel for riverboat travelers. Later, it went through several reincarnations, including being an alleged bawdy house before being returned to its former grandeur as a historical hotel in the 1970s by local resident Larry Sherrin. After a quick tour of La Borde House, we made our way up the hill to the Texas Café for lunch. Established in 1939 by Celmente Garza Sr. The cafe serves chicken fried steaks, (their number one best seller), hamburgers, chicken salad, grilled shrimp and other items sure to please most appetites. Then it was off to the trolley ride. Our tour guide, Aminta Reyna, was passionate and very knowledgeable about the city’s rich history. The area was first settled by the Spanish when Jose De Escandon brought colonists pulling twowheeled carts north from San Luis Potosi in 1749. While most settled on the Mexican side of the river because it could be irrigated for crops, cattle ranches were established on the north side of the river. As the south side of the river filled up, people began moving to the north side of the river. Reyna spoke about the days before Falcon Dam was built and the Rio Grande was deep enough for paddlewheel boats
When Fort Ringgold was built and officially opened Oct. 26, 1848 on 37 acres of land donated by Davis. It was named for David Ringgold who died at the Battle of Palo Alto. The fort was an active cavalry fort for many years. The fort was an important part of the Old West as its soldiers fought to protect settlers from Apache and Comanche raids, along with Mexican bandits. Because it was located on a small hill, the view was excellent for sighting Juan Cortina’s bandits as they moved along the river on the Mexican side. It grew to include over 200 acres, making it the largest active cavalry fort in the Old West. The fort was closed in 1944 and the land and buildings were donated to the Rio Grande City Independent School District. Today, administrative offices and a junior high are still located on the site and the marching fields, and several of the buildings, such as the hospital, ammunition depository, soldiers’ barracks and tax office, used while the area was still a fort can be seen on a drive through the area. One of the buildings on the RGCISD campus bears a mural of Rio Grande City’s history that was painted by Alberto Barrera, who studied under Diego Rivera. The old Quartermaster House where Col. Robert E. Lee is said to have stayed while serving in the area during the Mexican American War has been refurbished

Lee officially presided over a court martial case in Rio Grande City in 1856 and stayed at the house at that time. During school times it can be opened for viewing if arrangements are made in advance. Steamboats brought all supplies for the fort up the river as there were no roads and paths were filled with thorns, snakes
and other dangers. Bessie I sank in 1890 during bad weather. The trolley we rode was named Bessie II, in its honor. Originally, Rio Grande City was referred to as Davis Landing. Davis designed the city to resemble the capital in Austin. On the river was a dock where the steamboats stopped. Warehouses at one time lined the banks of the river on both sides. He designed a boulevard leading up the hill to the county courthouse. Because Rio Grande City was the head of navigation for larger boats, Davis envisioned the city has becoming a large inland port. However, between the hostile Indians to the west, unrest in Mexico to the south and the Civil War, the port never developed the way Davis hoped. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, trains replaced steamboats as the way to move people and take goods to market. Reyna told visitors, in the 1800s most homes were built to face the river since it was the “road” everyone traveled. Among those homes were the Tijerina-Lopez home and the Emilio Block home, which like La Borde House, has tunnels that were used for smuggling. According to Reyna the tunnels were sealed in 1955 by the Texas Department of Transportation when the highway was put through town. Most were unusable since the 1933 hurricane moved the river south. By Kathy Olivarez Quilters from all over the Rio Grande Valley were set up at Trophy Gardens on Thursday, Oct. 22, working on quilts for homeless military personnel living in the Rio Grande Valley. Each brought their own equipment including sewing machines and thread. The material for the quilts was supplied by the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild. Lucy Klaas from Illinois, told the Winter Texan Times the ladies gather several times a year to make quilts for the military. Since some of the ladies now live in
the Valley fulltime, they met at least twice during the summer to make quilts. “We used to send our quilts to Fort Hood, but we found out there were many veterans who live in the Valley who need the quilts,” said Klaas. Now the ladies get the names of veterans who need quilts from the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars. The quilts will be given out throughout the year as the need arises. Klaas pointed out the different activities going on. “Every woman here will
