Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 28, No. 02 © 2014 VIP Park hosts ‘Welcome Back’ party
Both new and returning residents of VIP La Feria were welcomed to the start of the new season on Wednesday, Oct. 29, with a costume party and hot dog cookout. Residents greeted old friends and met new residents during the event. Several residents added to the jovial mood with their costumes. Ross Giacomo, who works and lives at the park during winter months, was wearing an Indian brave costume and calling himself “Chief Walking Eagle” from the “Where Am I?” tribe. His wife Sally, who works in the office, was dressed as an Indian princess, “Lost a Lot” from the same tribe. The couple is from Missouri, but they have spent the last eight years at VIP La Feria and love working there. Barb Saxon livened up things wearing a bright pink wig. She explained the wig was the real thing as she is currently See VIP LA FERIA pg. 03

From one citrus family to another Holbrooks ready to take over Klement’s Grove and Country Store By Julie Silva The grove began small with 5 acres in back of their home at the corner of Taylor Road and Mile 3. At that time, Will Klement said, waving a hand at Mile 3 Road, the area was considered the country. “That road right there was not paved, not even caliche,” Klement said, “It was a sand road.” Will and Julie Klement bought the house in 1967 to get their boys out of the city. To teach their children responsibility, the Klements had their boys pick fruit and sell it from a wagon on the corner by the house. Over the years, the enterprise grew from the wagon to a chicken house to a small building. Will Klement said his boys would bring their friends and they’d all pick fruit to earn money after school and on the weekends. Before Christmas kids would line up to pick the trees clean as they were paid by the bushel, but the day after the holiday, no kids could be found, he joked. • In 1984, Klement Grove and Country

Veterans War Memorial of Texas to celebrates Veterans Day
By Kathy Olivarez At 11:11 a.m., the time the Armistice from World War I was signed, Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen, will once again honor the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Armistice Day Treaty was signed in Compiegne, France at 11:11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, officially ending World War I. According to Col. Frank Plummer, USAF (Ret)., 1.3 million American men and women have given their lives in all of the armed conflicts since the Revolutionary War. The war memorial in McAllen was Plummer’s dream and he has worked hard for a period of many years to make it happen. The war memorial features many granite walls depicting all of the major wars in which the U.S. military has served. In adLt. Gen. The crowning feature of the memorial, which has taken decades to complete, is the new 105-foot black granite spire, which was completed after the last Veterans Day celebration, in memory of those who gave their lives for America.
Plummer said over 400 schoolchildren are expected to attend the event. Col. David Kramer, a veteran of the World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars, will serve as keynote speaker. Guests will gather around the new 105foot black granite spire as the tribute ceremony is conducted. Rick Estrada will issue the sound to the colors as the giant flag owned by Jim Shawn is raised above the memorial. He See VETERANS DAY pg. 27

McAllen Symphonic Band concert slated for Veterans Day
The McAllen Symphonic Band will open the 2014-15 concert season with a program entitled “Heroes” on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Worship Center in McAllen. Rogelio “Roger” Olivarez is the new head director of the band this season. He is a native of Rio Grande City where he is currently the Director of Fine Arts for Rio Grande City CISD, a position he has held since May, 2010. He has been employed with the school district since 1980, when he started as a flute and saxophone instructor and teaching concert band at RGC High School. He was named head director in 1999 and his bands have achieved numerous honors at both UIL competitions and music festivals in San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. The band and mariachi programs at RGCCISD are known for their exemplary performance standards and both have earned numerous awards and honors. Olivarez says his impression of the Symphonic Band so far is that they love to be challenged. “They have set a high musical standard for themselves and I’m very pleased with their work ethic and dedication. This makes my job easier. They also seem to get along with each other and we have lots of fun in rehearsals.”
When asked what the biggest challenge so far has been, he said, “the fact that we only rehearse once a week. I was used to rehearsing on a daily basis and knowing that most of the band would be present every day. The other challenge is that we usually do not have the same group of musicians from week to week. August, September, October and the first part of November is rough because many of the band directors that play with the group are working with their high school bands getting ready for Pigskin (UIL marching contest). But the people that are there every week have a sense of dedication and loyalty to the group that has truly made a positive impression on me.” He adds, ”Not having the opportunity to make music on a daily basis had a definite impact on me when I took my present position with the school district. I still missed it tremendously, even after four years. But auditioning for and being selected has been a Godsend for me. I am honored to be the director of this great group of musicians.” Incorporated in 1974, the McAllen Symphonic Band is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide cultural entertainment to the community and an outlet for local musicians who enjoy reSee CONCERT pg. 28

I Wanted To Make A Difference!
By Roda Grubb It was Paul Rockhill’s second day in Vietnam. Nineteen years old, fresh from his training, still wet-behind-the ears, the kid sat in the back of a large truck with a dozen or so other GIs. “I can remember the sense of excitement inside me on the day I decided to volunteer for Vietnam that summer of 1969,” he would write in his journal 33 years later. But … this was the day he joined the war. Witnessing unbelievable poverty as the truck bounced its way to Cua Viet Naval Base from DaNang, Paul sat in the back of the truck and wept for the people. Encountering what appeared to be a funeral parade processi d in the ocean and rescue people. My mother was a corporal and meteorologist in the U.S. Marine Corps, within the second company of women to join the Marines during WWII. I was taught to be a patriot. That’s what our family was all about. We’ve been in every war. “My parents were also professional musicians. Every evening, my mother on the piano, my father playing his string bass, played the songs of every branch of the service and we four kids marched through the house. When you hit your bedroom you dropped off. It was a ritual,” a soft grin spread across his bristled

From pg. 06 college, but I began losing interest. The Vietnam War was going on and I started thinking more of it.” Not waiting for the draft to come for him, Paul enlisted in the Navy in June and by September was in boot camp in San Diego. His first venture was in an old WWII diesel “Pig Boat.” “You were covered with diesel oil the whole time. Everything was diesel – the food, the sheets.” When a simple slip from an officer failed to completely seal the hatch as the sub dove and Paul, at his position next to the ladder to the hatch, was flooded from above, lights went on in his head. “I realized I was claustrophobic and left the submarine with respect,” he chuckled quietly. Now it was time to figure out where his path would lead. Time for hard choices. “I wanted to make a difference,” he said urgently. “I volunteered for Vietnam.” Paul made it to Cua Viet Naval Base that day, all the while wondering what the truth was in what he had just witnessed during that funeral procession. He spent a year in Vietnam. During the time along the Cua Viet River he helped send barges up the river to the 3rd Marine Division, and was also involved with the defoliation of the river’s edge, drenched again and again with a chemical called Agent Orange. “We didn’t know what it was. When they would spray it to defoliate, we were there. We didn’t know any better,” his voice was of an incredulous, innocent 19-year-old. Going into riverside villages to garner information, they would bring supplies to the Vietnamese people. Binding their gangrenes’ wounds, he would feel helpless, knowing those superficial coverings wouldn’t stop the deadly infection taking over their systems. And still he was a good soldier, following orders. Transferred to Saigon, he began teaching Vietnamese soldiers English. Those who learned enough English would go to America to be trained so they could go back and “save” their country. Paul had stories of the war the “Saigon” way, similar to the methods in Iraq today. Exiting Vietnam, he landed in California at 2:45 a.m. “We really didn’t know all that was going on back in the states,” those innocent 19-year-old eyes spoke again. With their bus being pelted with various items from protesters hovering around the base gate, the returning soldiers were told not to wear their uniforms at civilian airports and not to talk to anyone of where they’d been. Two years later, after another stint in the Navy as a dental assistant for an oral surgeon, Paul arrived back at Harlingen at midnight, once again hidden from the public. His former-Marine mother debriefed See ROCKHILL pg. 13

Play about Vietnam War opens Nov. 13
Patricio Castañeda was a high school football player from Weslaco, Texas who died in combat in Khe Sahn, Vietnam in 1968. Although he is a fictitious character in the new play, “Pat & Lyndon” by Archer Crosley & the Pharr Community Theater Company, he nonetheless is reminiscent of real RGV soldiers that died during the Vietnam War. The brave struggle of this young man, torn from his family in the line of duty, is paralleled to the politics of the era as Pat tells his story alongside President Lyndon B. Johnson. Both Pat and Lyndon appear on stage in the afterlife as their story is told by the host, a middle-of-the road civil patriot of the time who voices concepts about the handling of the war through politics and citizens. Luis Moreno, director of “Pat & Lyndon” discussed what drew him to the Vietnam War drama, “It’s difficult to say but when I first read the script, I felt like I wanted to bring out the full potential of such a visceral and emotional story of a subject that has been coming up a lot recently. About war, about the consequences of war…the different ideologies of war. It’s very interesting to see these two different views during the Vietnam War: one
from the world’s most powerful individual and the other from a fallen RGV war hero.” Elva Michal, who founded the Pharr Community Theater Company in 2008, brings back this play for a second run after a staging in 2011. “I just really love the story and wanted to do something like this for all the brave men and women who were affected in some way by this war. I have a lot of respect for them. And I want to send a shout out to all Valley-wide veterans groups and families to come on out to see the play and the wonderful work put on by our community theater company.” The production will run from Nov. 13 through Nov. 23 for a total of eight performances at the Carnahan Auditorium at 317 W Gore Street, in Pharr. Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tours of the play to other RGV cities can be arranged. Tickets are $7 general admission. Seating is limited to 70 people per show.

RGV Senior Ambassadors seeks new singers
An open invitation is being issued for local and Winter Texan male singers to sit in on an informal practice with the RGV Senior Ambassadors Chorus at West Bentsen Grove RV Park, any Friday, beginning Nov. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. This is not an audition, but rather an opportunity for singers to see if performing with RGV Senior Ambassadors is a fit
for them. RGV Senior Ambassadors will perform at about a dozen RGV parks and public venues during the 2014-15 season. Over the years the group has performed many concerts in Winter Texan Parks and taken part in other public concerts. For more information call Robert Burnam (956) 287-4087.
From the young man, now 23. For half a day he sat and told her everything, things he never thought he’d tell anyone, let alone his mother. For the next 30 years he was part of the civilian world, thinking he’d left that country far behind, thanks to good counseling with the VA. But then his body began its series of aches and pains, memory loss, loss of balance. As the owner of Rockhill Productions for 19 years, he loved his work in the theater world but he knew something was wrong. “I went to the VA because the medical bills were getting quite expensive.” Comparing his symptoms to those around the nation for his age group, the consensus came in. Agent Orange was the culprit and Vietnam came rushing back
pg. 09 into his life. Today, Paul’s in an electronic wheelchair, not able to balance himself. Memory comes and goes, spinal cord fusion has made him unable to feel from his chest down. Yet through it all, Paul will tell you he is happy. He married, has children and grandchildren. He loves his life in Alamo Rose and is more than proud of his time in the Navy, his work in Vietnam. He will tell you he is happier than anyone in his park with no animosity towards his country. “I wouldn’t change a bit of it,” he states with gusto. “Not at all.” In case no one has said it to you lately, Paul, please let me say, “Thank you for your service – you and all veterans wherever they may be. America is grateful.”

From pg. 01 and he and his wife have decided it’s time to take a step back from the business. They’ve had several offers from growers to take over the store, but when it came time to pass the torch, Will Klement said family was important. His own grandchildren all had a part in the store, and his daughter-in-law helped run it until recently. That’s why the Klements turned to the Holbrooks, another Mission family with deep citrus-growing roots. “I thought these people would probably do the best job because I knew that he had his son-in-law with him,” Klement said. “Family was involved with it, and that’s kind of what you need.” Dennis Holbrook, owner of South Tex Organics, and his family are taking over the market with a grand opening scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7. Under the name Earth Born Market, the store will continue to sell all the products the Klement shop has become known for in the area. In fact, last week, Will Klement showed the Holbrook women the right way to make fudge. (Insider tip: The recipe calls for fresh pecans, none of that prepackaged stuff.) On top of keeping up with old favorites at the market, the Holbrooks plan to introduce organic alternatives as well as vegetables. Farming is in Dennis Holbrook’s roots.
Plus, the farm, shared with other family members, was too small to sustain four families. Holbrook’s parents first visited the Valley in November when already there was snow on the ground in Utah. In comparison, the Valley looked like paradise. “The comment that my father made to my mother as they were going back to Utah, is if the Valley is half as good as these people say it is, this will be good,” Holbrook said. And it was. The Holbrooks had to learn a different type of farming in South Texas, but soon they became friends with developers and began to plant groves and manage properties for absentee landowners. Dennis Holbrook grew up in the business. As young as 10, he remembered his father giving him a hoe with a broken handle to hoe cotton. When it came time to pick the cotton, Holbrook was too small to carry a regular cotton sack, so his father put two gunnysacks together for the young boy to carry. The next year, Holbrook was driving a tractor, and he eventually moved up to applying herbicide and insecticide to crops. At 23, Holbrook bought the grove care company from his parents, having returned home from college. The business grew from there. In the early ’80s, several things happened that pushed Holbrook to get involved in growing products organically.
cides, using beneficial insects–what Mother Nature supplies or makes available to you,” Holbrook said. “You’re looking at being able to utilize what nature already had in place.” In ’81 and ’82, he said, Texas had an oversupply of grapefruit and was selling a ton of citrus for $15. Nowadays, he said, a 40-pound box sells for more than $15. At that time, Dennis Holbrook said they weren’t able to sell the citrus for what production costs, and he was looking for a way to make ends meet. That’s when he started researching growing organic, and there wasn’t a lot of information available. It was also about that time that Texas Tech came to him and asked if they could do a blind study on his employees to test for pesticide residues. Holbrook agreed, but only if he was tested as well. “All the times I was a teenager, I was running those kinds of machines, working for a crop duster and mixing chemicals,” he said. “I had the highest (residue) levels of anybody at our company.” Then in ’83, a 100-year freeze hit. The number of grapefruit acres in South Texas dropped from 75,000 to 35,000. That’s when Dennis Holbrook made the move to organic, setting five-year goals for himself to decide if it was worth it. He surpassed those goals in three years. Whole Foods was his first customer. The hundred-year freeze in ’89 put the citrus business out of commission for a
successful. To pay the bills, they started planting vegetables. Holbrook said he and his family had talked about starting a market like Klement’s but never moved on it, so when the Klements met with him about taking it over, he thought it would be a good fit. Plus, it enabled him to bring his own son, Russon, back home to help run the business. Russon Holbrook’s background is mainly in business and investment, but he said he’s ready to return to his roots. That’s why he brought his own family back home. “The store was developed as a result of (the Klements) wanting to teach their children the value of hard work,” Russon Holbrook said. “The same mentality that my grandfather taught my father and my father taught me is the same mentality that I want to pass on to my kids as well.” “That’s the culture we want to create, keep the same homey, country feel, but modernize it with today’s methodology of farming.”

From pg. 04 who live in the United States. Shriners Hospitals are dedicated to helping children regardless of where they live. The Winter Texan Times dropped by the La Feria site on a day when a small orthopedic clinic was being conducted. McMillian explained that small clinics do not involve doctors. Technicians come down from Houston to adjust braces, walkers, and other orthopedic equipment the children need. These clinics take place four to seven times a year. There are also four large, two-day clinics when doctors from Shriners Hospital in Houston come down to see existing patients, examine new patients and determine what types of treatments are needed. Similar clinics are held in Pharr where doctors from the burn hospital come down to see patients. Some of the patients need treatments that cannot be administered at the clinic. That is the reason the transportation network is so large. McMillian said the Houston Shriners Hospital treats children with scoliosis and spinal deformities, clubfoot and related deformities, osteogensis imperfecta, spinal bifida and melodysplasia and neuromuscular disorders. Children suffering from hand problems, hip disorders, orthopaedic prob-
in addition to other conditions. If a doctor decides a child must be treated in the hospital, arrangements are made to take the child to Houston or Galveston. The Shriners use 15-passenger vans and the drivers are all volunteers. The annual report for 2013 showed a total of 112 van trips to Houston or Galveston, with a total of 923 children transported along with their guardians by 423 volunteer drivers. Through September of 2014, over 1000 children have been transported. With three months left in the year, it is obvious the need is growing. Children with afternoon appointments are picked up at the border in Reynosa at 4 a.m. for the trip. For those going on a two-day trip the bus leaves at 8 a.m. They receive a snack in Wharton, but eat a meal that evening in the hospital cafeteria before going to a hotel located near the hospital. The bill is paid for by the Shriners. The children on the late run will see the doctors in the morning of the second day. If a child needs surgery, he or she and the guardian can stay at the hospital. McMillian said all costs are borne by the Shriners. The children and their guardians do not need to bring any money. Valley Shriners work hard all year to
Jackson Roads in Pharr, will have a chicken Dinner fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The meal is $5 per plate to eat in or carry out. The Rio Grande Valley Shrine, located at 13415 US Expressway 83 in La Feria (on north frontage road) holds Bingos each Tuesday at 7 p.m. starting Nov. 18
from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. for $6, December through March. Call (956) 797-1524 for information. One fundraiser that has become popular with Winter Texans is a casino party, which the Shriners run. They put them on at Trophy Gardens and several other parks in the past couple of years.
From will also perform “Taps” at the end of the ceremony. The young, talented Valley native singer Stephen Lopez will sing the “Stars Spangled Banner” and “American Soldier.” There will be a 21-gun salute by the McAllen Police Honor Guard and Colors will be presented by the McAllen Police Department. Plummer told the Winter Texan Times that the Veterans War Memorial of Texas continues to get state and national attention. Recently, members of 300 Daughters of the American Revolution gathered in McAllen for a convention. They visited the war memorial as part of the activities planned during the convention. Afterward, they voted to fund an eight-foot statue of Patrick Henry making his “Give me Liberty or Death” speech to be placed in the section of the memorial dedicated to the
pg. 01 American Revolution. The statue will be made by sculptor Douglas Clark and will be ready for dedication on April 19, 2015, exactly 240 years to the day he uttered those famous words. It will be placed in the Plaza of Liberty honoring the American Revolution that started in 1775 in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. Plummer also said the war memorial will be receiving a coat of arms for George Washington that was originally placed at the DAR headquarters in Washington by members of the Texas chapters of DAR. When that building was torn down, the coat of arms was returned to Texas and will be placed at the McAllen memorial. The Veterans War Memorial of Texas is located to the west of the McAllen Convention Center on Ware Road, just north of Expressway 83.

• Pain On Chewing • Hot And Cold Sensitivity • Pain When Eating Sweets/Sugar • No Dental Decay Present • No Evidence Of Problem On X-ray Teeth may crack when subjected to stress of chewing hard foods or ice, or by biting on unexpected hard objects. Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.
