From the Publisher Caring & Sharing As we approach the holiday season, our hearts are drawn to those less fortunate – especially the children who, without the generosity of others, would have a very sad and Jim Brunson bleak Christmas. Winter Texans have a remarkable reputation for their generous hearts and are known to plan food and clothing drives, make quilts and gather toy donations for many needy children and families. If your park or resort is planning a food drive for Thanksgiving, a toy drive for Christmas, or other activities to help brighten the holidays for the less fortunate, send me an email at news@ wintertexantimes.com or give me a call at 956-580-7800. UTRGV presents ‘Barefoot in the Park’ Nov. 14-18

Neil Simon’s classic play “Barefoot in the Park” will be performed at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre in Nov. 14-18. This UTRGV Mainstage production is directed by Trey Mikolasky. Show times on all dates are 7:30, except for Sundays, which will be 2 p.m. matinees. Barefoot in the Park was a 1967 comedy film starring Robert Redford as Paul and Jane Fonda as Corie. It was based on Neil Simon’s 1963 play of the same name and focuses on newlyweds Corie and Paul and their adventures living in a tiny sixth floor walk-up apartment in a Greenwich Village brownstone. Paul is a hard-working young attorney just starting his practice while his wife is focused on creating a romantic environment for them in their one room with no heat, a hole in the skylight and strange neighbors. The title is in reference to the fact that Paul will not go running barefoot in the See BAREFOOT pg. 19

Chris Carney: Veteran, helicopter pilot, Canyon Lake resident

Chris Carney served as a MEDEVAC helicopter pilot.

Chris Carney looked out and around the local coffee shop, his eyes seemingly never reaching a destination as his face showed he was contemplating what to say. A glaze – maybe a little bit of a mist – seemed to cover those eyes, even ever so briefly. Those eyes have seen so much, nightmares in real life, nightmares personified. Even when they are closed, the images don’t go away. Images of his best friend crashing to the ground in a fiery ball after his helicopter was struck by an RPG. Images of his own fuel tank being hit and ruptured during a rescue mission. He calls it the best and worst day of his life, Valentine’s Day 2010 in Western Afghanistan. Best, only because he’s still alive to tell the story. The question had been asked, “What See PILOT pg. 2

Texas Wheels: Popular band in the Winter Texan park scene

Mike and Irma Wimsett started making their way to their seats, ready to take a break after dancing to a couple songs by one of their favorite bands, Texas Wheels. It was a Saturday night at Mission Bell and just like every Saturday, Texas Wheels is a regular, performing from 7 to 10 p.m. Just as they were within arm’s reach of their destination, the band began “Louisiana Saturday Night,” and they were back out on the dance floor. The routine repeated itself one more time. After that, the couple stood firm in the middle of the floor, deciding that they may as well listen to what Texas Wheels played next before deciding to take that now long-awaited break. “That happens quite often, especially when we are out dancing where they are playing,” Irma said. “Every time out they have a different group of songs and they are always learning new songs – they’re See TEXAS WHEELS pg. 4

From pg. 1 are your long-term plans?” It was as if it had never been contemplated before. It is, in fact, something that the 54-year-old Nashville, Tennessean doesn’t put much stock in. “I just want to get through another day,” said Carney, one of South Texas’ youngest Winter Texans, living at Canyon Lake RV Park in Mission. “I value every day and value the smaller things in life. You try to focus on the fact that we are given another day on earth to live.” A retired veteran, Carney joined the military as a 17-year-old in 1981 and spent 31 years in active service. He was in both the Air Force as a SWAT member and law enforcement officer, and for two years as USAF Presidential Honor Guard unit; then the Army, the latter as a MEDEVAC helicopter pilot, Carney now works for the US Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Division. He loves what he does because it packs in everything he’s learned to do, from piloting to rescuing to protecting U.S. Citizens. A self-admitted adrenaline junkie, Carney said the key to his life is trying to enjoy each day; more specifically, each moment. “I spent 28 months in Afghanistan, flying MEDEVAC, rescuing the injured on the battlefield. While not carefree, he says he works hard on enjoying the moment. “You’re not guaranteed the next five minutes,” he said. “You need to make the most of every moment you’re in. You need to succeed in each moment – there may not be others.” Carney knows because he’s seen it. From those who have died on the battlefield or even after being rescued, to facing his own mortality time and again. “Every day in aviation, especially in a war zone we say ‘another great day has passed,’” he said. “’I didn’t take a dirt nap,’” That’s true in anything in life.” During his military career, some of the distinguished awards and medals he has earned include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star 2nd, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Air Force Commendation Medal, Senior Aviator Badge, Combat Medical, Combat Action, Air Assault Badge and many more. Last year, Carney received a call from U.S. Customs with a possible opportunity to join. The process moved quickly and before he knew it, he was a 52-year-old (the oldest in his class) in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy, going through orientation and training once again. “I got a kick out of being the oldest See PILOT pg. 4

From pg. 2 in the academy,” he said. “I look at this as just being another stage, another journey in my life. I’m living in this moment now.” That moment includes enjoying his time as one of the youngest Winter Texans in the Valley. When he completed the academy and was offered the position with the Air and Marine Division, he started to work out where he was going to live. “One of my superiors was talking about all these RV parks here in the Valley,” he said. “I started looking around, went to about six or seven of them and they were all so great. You just need to research and find one that clicks. That’s what happened at Canyon Lake for me.” Carney said he’s enjoyed living in his home on wheels. He’s made some friends, including several veterans and said it’s an amazing thing to watch all the people start filling in the park. When he’s not working, he walks and works out a lot, and loves to ride his Harley. Carney has faced gunfire aimed for his helicopter. He’s seen and heard rockets fly past him. He’s felt the power of rockets exploding so close to him while deployed in Afghanistan that he’s wondered oftentimes how he’s still alive. And despite all those dangers, his biggest injury came in the states when a driver blew through a stop sign crossed over into a southbound lane. For Carney, that was his northbound lane and he was hit head on. “I was just going to work one day, was actually called in to fly a mission with Superman, General Colin Powell,” Carney said. “I had four operations on my spine and for the next year whenever I would leave my house or go somewhere in public, I’d be in a wheelchair or a cane, depending on how bad the day was,” he said. “There came a point where I couldn’t feel anything from my mid-body down and they did a fifth surgery to stabilize my spine.” He left the hospital six days later, being told that he would walk with a cane or a walker the rest of his life. They clearly didn’t know who they were talking to. “I did a lot of core training and had done a lot of powerlifting before,” he said. “I started working on everything inside, because that supports everything on the outside. “And here I am.”

not archaic – but they play all the old good ones too.” Texas Wheels is a five-man band made up of Andy Gonzalez on drums, Homer Rincones on steel and lead guitar, Manny Villegas on bass guitar, Clyde Chavez on fiddle and harmonica and Jay Luna on rhythm guitar and keyboard. “We’re a country, line-dancing, big band, Cajun and rock band,” jokes Gonzalez, who said he’s been playing since the Beatles got him hooked and he would listen to their music while playing on his first drum set – his mattress. “It all started with the Beatles. I wanted to do what they did.” “We dance all the time,” Irma said. “And they play dance music all night. They keep the beat. They’re not last century.” “They are just flat out good,” Mike said. The band doesn’t perform with any type of a band set. Rincones said that not only do they know what people want to hear – and it’s not the same from park to park – but they are usually playing their next song based on requests. During their first break on a Saturday night, they received a couple of requests, one was for “Duma Walker” by the Kentucky Headhunters in 1989. The band goes back to 1983 with founder Louis Gomez and was named Texas Country Band. Gomez died in 2016 and the band renamed itself Texas Wheels – after making sure their followers would be ok with these band members singing, replacing the iconic voice of Gomez. Like many bands, members come and go. Rincones left for the club scene for a while but returned to the park scene in 2005. “I was like the long, lost little brother,” Rincones said. “I brought Louie into the club scene then he went into the park scene. We did our different gigs, but we never drifted apart.” Now, the group has a regular following at three parks in the Valley. Texas Wheels, which won the Valley Star Awards in 2016 as Texas Country Band for Best Country Music Band, plays every Thursday at Mission Bell, every Friday at Fun ‘n Sun Resort in San Benito, and every Saturday at Winter Ranch RV Park in Alamo. Some of the other fan favorites and commonly requested songs include “Blue Rose Is” by Pam Tillis, “Cowboy Cumbia” and “Palm Valley,” a song that was a hit for Gomez in Spanish. It’s still a regular request. Of course, Rincones has his favorites, including certain waltzes and songs by Merle Haggard. While those may be some of his favorites, Rincones said he and the band are there to serve others and play what they want to hear – including songs like “Pretty Woman,” “Dream, Dream” and “Old Time Rock n Roll.” See TEXAS WHEELS pg. 5

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

From pg. 4 “The requests are changing a little more because of all the new, younger Winter Texans coming down,” Rincones said. “That’s fine – we love learning new

South Texas College Theatre presents A. R. Gurney’s play “Sylvia” from Nov 15-18 at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts Main Stage Theater, located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The production will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 17 and there will be a 2 p.m. matiness on Nov. 18. The production is the story of Greg and Kate, who have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. One day, Greg brings home a dog found in the park bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her nametag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major cause of disagreement between husband and wife. For Greg, Sylvia offers an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age, but for

Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives. General admission tickets are $10. Student, faculty, military, and senior citizen are $5. The play contains mature language and adult themes. Parental discretion is advised. Ticket sales from the Nov. 15 production will go toward the Dr. John F. Carroll Drama Scholarship. The Nov. 18 matinee production will be interpreted in American Sign Language. For Authentic Chicago-style Cooking, Come to Scalisi’s Midwesterners yearning for a taste of home – and anyone else looking for authentic Chicago-style pizza and other tasty dishes – simply must head over to Scalisi’s Chicago Style Pizza & More. They’re located at 912 E. Nolana Loop in Pharr. Owner Patty Scalise says the family moved from Chicago several years ago. When they decided to open a family restaurant, their passion was to serve authentic Chicago style foods.

“It tastes like home,” said Barb Stanford, a former Winter Texan who recently moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Chicago. “The Lamb Gyro is absolutely authentic.” Her son, Tim, said he likes the Chicago Combo Sandwich on Gonnella bread. He says it is just like those back home. Chef Carl “Chuck” Scalise makes a fresh Chicago-style dough for the pizzas and makes the sauce from scratch. The pizza is cut in squares, Chicago-style. The restaurant offers variety of pizzas including “Scalisi’s Deluxe,” which includes one meat with an array of fresh vegetables. Or try the “Super Deluxe Four Meat Pizza.” Their Margherita Pizza features fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. There are a wide variety of other varieties to choose from and they are all available in the traditional Chicago deep dish style crust, thin and crispy crust, or hand tossed crust. Scalisi’s also serves a variety of sandwiches, including the popular Italian Beef Sandwich, Chicken Parmigiana, and others. Another favorite is the Chicago-style hotdog with true Vienna sausages with poppy seed buns not found in grocery stores in the Valley. Look for authentic Maxwell Street dogs as well, served with celery salt, true Chicago style. Burgers are also available. Of course, their pastas are popular, including the colorful Spicy Chicken Penne Pasta which is a favorite among Winter Texans. The Spaghetti and Meatballs are homemade. Look for ravioli, calzones and strombolis. They serve a variety of fresh salads including Caesar salad, Wedge alad, Portabella Mushroom salad and the favorite Caprese salad with fresh to-

matoes and mozzarella cheese. If you’re in the mood for a great appetizer, you’re in for a treat. Scalisi’s serves Fried Mushrooms, Cheese Sticks and Buffalo Wings. Plus, they also offer Fried Pickles, Texas Toothpicks and Patty’s family favorite, Fried Cauliflower. My cameraman found the fried cauliflower so delicious he could not stop eating it, and it is usually hard to persuade him to eat a vegetable! Look for traditional desserts like the Mascarpone and ricotta cheese-filled Cannoli and cheesecake. Or opt for a brownie a la mode or vanilla ice cream. Regardless of which entrée you choose, it will be prepared in the authentic Chicago style that’ll remind you of home. Buy One Pasta & Get One 1/2 Off (of equal or lesser value w/coupon)

Wild By Nature by Luciano Guerra

The last two weeks I featured the top birding hot spots in Hidalgo and Cameron Counties here. This week I will be featuring other Hidalgo County birding hot spots that in many ways are just as good as the big three I wrote about previously but are not as well known. Edinburg Scenic Wetlands ranks fourth in Hidalgo County with 196 bird species reported to eBird this year, making it one of the top birding hot spots. ESW is situated on 40 acres within a city park, near the heart of the City of Edinburg. Built on reclaimed farm fields and next to the city’s effluent and floodwater ponds, the center is a showcase for wildlife and a native habitat site set amidst an urban setting. Since this nature center is a wetlands, it attracts a wide variety of bird species including wading birds, ducks, kingfishers, hawks, warblers, hummingbirds and many others. Anzalduas County Park in Mission and Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center in McAllen follow close behind with 188 bird species each reported to eBird this year. Located on FM 494, just west of the community of Granjeno, the 96-acre Anzalduas County Park is situated along the banks of the Rio Grande River. While it is more of a family park than it is a nature center -- complete with a boat dock, fishing pier, picnic tables, barbeque pits and playground equipment -- it is still a great place to bird. In addition, it offers a great view of the Rio Grande for anybody wanting to enjoy its scenic beauty. Located on Sunset Drive just east of South 10th Street in McAllen, Quinta Mazatlan is actually a historic 10,000-square-foot Spanish Revival adobe hacienda nestled within 15 acres of birding habitat made up mostly of wild Tamaulipan thornscrub. There are winding trails to explore, as well as several water features and bird feeding areas to visit. Its history and first-class facilities not only makes it unique among Valley nature centers, but also makes it a must-see for history buffs and nature lovers alike. With 186 species of birds reported to eBird this year, Frontera Audubon Center ranks seventh among Hidalgo County birding hot spots. Located at 1101 S. Texas Blvd. in Weslaco, Frontera Audubon is a 15-acre haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife that thrive among the native habitats of its Tamaulipan thornscrub forest, butterfly garden, wetlands, and ponds. Among the many species of birds that have been seen and photographed at Frontera recently is a rare Golden-crowned Warbler. While it is being seen on a daily basis, there is no way of knowing how much longer it will be around.

McAllen Wind Ensemble concert features ‘America Loves the Movies’

America loves the movies. From the days of Clark Gable and “Gone with the Wind,” through the Harry Potter series to today’s superhero flicks, there has been a long relationship with the big screen and its audience. The McAllen Wind Ensemble will take people on a journey through popular movie scores and more on Nov. 13 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center (PAC) with its first performance of the season, aptly named “America Loves the Movies.” The 70-plus musicians, led by director Roger Olivarez, will keep the audience on a roller-coaster ride through twisting compositions that highlight different sections of the orchestra in romantic and beautiful renditions and back to musically moving pieces for a night of great music. “One of the pieces is called ‘Who’s That Masked Man,’” Olivarez said. “It has all the different superheroes who wore masks – like Zorro and Superman and there’s even a piece from “The Incredibles 2.” There’s also a nine-minute arrangement that will have Harry Potter fans reminiscing about the school-aged boy and his friends and the all the danger and adventures they faced over the years. That piece is very challenging. “A lot of the arrangement is sectionalized,” Olivarez said. “It starts with the

keyboards, then it goes to the woodwinds and on to the French horns. All sections will be featured, and toward the end it goes into ‘Harry’s Wondrous World’ and the full band is playing there.” First chair flutist Beth Van Epps agrees with her director. “The showcase is the Harry Potter themes – it goes a wicked, wicked pace,” said Van Epps, who is in her 13th year as band director at Sharyland High School,

and was band director at McAllen Rowe prior to that. “There’s a lot of movement and there are some real hard licks; the woodwinds are all busting fingers. There are so many slides; it just keeps moving.” This is the second full season that the ensemble will perform at the McAllen PAC. Olivarez said that they enjoyed their time and are very appreciative of the opportunity they had to play previously at the Trinity Worship Center. The group

had been called the McAllen Town Band until recently, changing the name to better reflect the ensemble’s compostion. “This building (McAllen PAC) was made for performances like what we do,” Olivarez said. “We can move panels around to make the acoustics what we need, there is ample dressing room space and space to practice. It’s really an amazing place.” Van Epps is from Dover, Ohio and moved to the Valley when she was hired for a band director position. She originally wanted to play the trumpet but “I was told my face wasn’t made for the trumpet.” Different faces have different characteristics for certain instruments, Van Epps said. “To me, the flute was too nice. I’m more of the aggressive music, like a lot more of the modern composers, like Bozza. He’s one of the 20th century composers – a little more classic and interesting. But I also like a good Mozart too – you have to have balance.” “America Loves the Movies” will reflect the spectrum when it comes to music and musical complexity, from the syncopated rhythms and ups and downs from The Incredibles 2, to even some jazzier, laid back pieces. Van Epps said the show “will keep you on your toes.” Olivarez was the Rio Grande City band director for 30 years and has been See ENSEMBLE pg. 19

Saying that rather than import big collections for exhibits that require charging of additional entry costs, Education Director Claudia Martinez, said the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) in McAllen has decided to feature their own collections and collections of local museums that can be easily traded. The museum will concentrate on offering art and science activities to patrons instead. When the Winter Texan Times arrived, Martinez was in the museum’s art studio working on sugar skulls to be used for the annual Day of the Dead celebration to be held that Saturday. She and fellow artists were preparing 100 sugar skulls from sugar, powdered meringue and water to be colored by those who attended the festival. Martinez said the museum offers adult art lessons on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Classes vary and include drawing, painting, sculpture and other forms of art. But the art studio is open every day and there are artists on duty to teach all kinds of art skills each week to those who come to the museum. The art skill for the week was Zen ink drawing. There are also Saturday workshops with changing themes such as sculpture or charcoal drawing. Because these workshops require more supplies, they cost $25, which includes admission to the mu-

and features 2D and 3D glass sculptures of migrating Roseate Spoonbills made from recycled materials. Spoonbills are native to southeast coastal regions but that migrate all the way to South America. This exhibit ends Dec. 9. Martinez said the traditional Christmas tree forest will open November 18 and run through the beginning of January. This very popular event is open to community groups, schools and scout troops. This year’s theme is Christmas in the Future.” In 2019, look for exhibits on the folk arts of Mexico and Latin America. There will also Hutichol musical instruments, and Native American art featuring bee designs on display. Martinez said the rocks and minerals exhibit is always on display and never seems to lose popularity. IMAS is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday with the exception of the first Thursday of each month when it is open until 8 p.m. Friday hours are: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. It will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas, New Years, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day and Easter Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and students with ID’s and $4 for children 4 to 12.

Local VA coordinators help traveling veterans receive services

The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health System for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides services for veterans in a 21-county area that stretches from Corpus Christi to Laredo to Brownsville, including the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. According to Sheryl Russo, Traveling Veterans Coordinator with TVCBHS in Harlingen, approximately 4500 veterans are traveling veterans who come to Texas each year seeking a warmer winter climate. Of that 4500, about 1800 need medical services of some kind while they are in the Valley. Because each veteran is assigned to a VA facility and primary care team according to his or her permanent home address, the veteran’s records need to be shared before he/she can receive coordinated care in the Valley. Each veterans group nationwide has a traveling coordinator,” said Russo, who helps veterans arrange non-emergency appointments at veterans facilities while they are in the Valley. Most veterans residing in Hidalgo County during their stay go to the veterans outpatient facility in McAllen, while those residing in Cameron county visit the veterans outpatient clinic in Harlingen. The traveling veterans program was mandated three years ago by the federal government to make it easier for trav-

Leal added, “Veterans who are coming with health issues need to take advantage of the program while they are still at home to be sure their records are on file here in a medical emergency. Veterans who are already here who know veterans from back home who are coming [to South Texas] should tell them to be sure and transfer their records to TVCBHS to avoid long waits in time of illness. Be sure and list any temporary phone number and addresses where a veteran can be reached in the Valley. “A lot of it is communication,” said Leal. “When a veteran is traveling out of his/her home area, we want this to be

VETS

From pg. 6 of when recalling when he went through. “I got to basic training and they considered me overweight and put me on 2,000 calories while my BMI (body mass index) required 4,500, especially with all the activity I was doing. They basically starved me and I lost a lot of muscle mass,” he said. “It was just run, run, run, push up, push up, push up. They just followed doctrine.” He said his morning breakfast would consist of egg whites, hard-boiled eggs or omelets – just a little more than a snack for someone burning upwards of 5,000 calories per day. He said his mom and sister were in tears when they saw him at graduation. “I loved my time in the military but there were things I didn’t agree with,” he said. “In basic, they just didn’t know better and when I tried to educate the drill sergeant (telling him they were pretty archaic on their methods), I would get punished for that.” During one mission his truck went right over an IED (improvised explosive

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

device) with a kill range of 50 meters. The blast sent his vehicle into the air, tires flying off. He was knocked completely out and when he woke up – still heavily groggy – he saw an Iraqi trying to pull him out of his seat. Survival instincts kicked in. I was scrambling, trying to pull out my knife,” he said. “Then I realized he was a good guy with our team – I was just out of it.” The explosion, in 2008, wasn’t the first close call for Rice. In 2004 he was hit with shrapnel from a rocket attack. As dangerous as it was, however, both veterans talk about many good times – and many wonderful sights. “There were some very clarified mo-

ments,” Rice said. “In Afghanistan we would be on top of the mountains and the blue skies and starry nights was absolutely amazing, something you see in movies.” Both men have no regrets and were quick to say that if they could – they would do it all over. “There were numerous close calls and some crazy times; a bunch of stories,” Swoboda said. “There was something though about the camaraderie – it always sticks with you. You can’t forget that. It was all sorts of crazy different people that you would meet or come in contact with. But we were all there for one purpose – protect our freedom.”
