Shriners Clowns with Dr. Norbury

Shriners Nomad Hall in Pharr helps burn victims

By Kathy Olivarez Shriners Hospitals all over the United States have long been known for providing free medical treatment to children who are burn victims or who have orthopedic disorders. But people may not realize they also take children from foreign countries as well. Because of the Valley’s close proximity to Mexico, Shriners have been very active in the here helping children have access to Shriners Hospitals. The transportation unit that runs between the border and Shriners Hospitals in Texas is the largest transportation unit in the United States. To cut down on costs, children with burns are treated both at the hospital in Galveston and at an outpatient clinic in Pharr, which is held twice a year. Children with orthopedic problems go the Shriners Hall in La Feria where outpatient clinics are also held twice a year. There are 22 Shriners Hospitals located throughout North America, including facilities in Galveston, Cincinnati, Sacramento and Boston. Dr. William Norbury, M.D. told the Winter Texan Times the staff from the burn hospital in Galveston and the orthopedic hospital come to the Valley twice a year for outpatient clinics because it is much easier financially to see a group of children here than it is to transport the children to Galveston. Doctors examine the children and see which ones need to be transported to Galveston or Houston for further treatment. The Galveston hosSee SHRINERS pg. 27

Historical Museum brings history to life

By Kathy Olivarez Mission Historical Museum is one of the best small town museums in the Rio Grande Valley. With Director Luis Contreras at the helm and his talented staff, the museum has a range of exhibits, events and displays planned for the winter season. The museum has a historical exhibit depicting life in the early days of the city and on the ranches nearby, along with the Shary Room honoring John Shary, known as the Father of the Texas Citrus Industry. Another display honors Cleo Dawson, early Mission pioneer who wrote the book “She Came to the Valley,” about experiences in her childhood as a Mission pioneer. The book was made into a movie and copies of the book are for sale in the museum’s gift shop. The Sports Room honors several of Mission’s hometown boys who achieved Museum Courtyard great sports successes. Tom Landry, who The courtyard at Mission Historical Museum has been beautifully landscaped with a See MUSEUM pg. 26 fountain, pavers, a butterfly garden and a grassy lawn to hold outdoor events.

Mission: The place to stay and play

By Kathy Olivarez When Winter Texans first started coming to the RGV many years ago, Mission was a small community known for its agricultural (especially citrus) production. But a lot has changed over the years. In a poll earlier this year Mission was named the fastest growing small city in the nation. In spite of the growth Mission still retains a lot of its small town flavor. In fact, so many Winter Texans have discovered it, there are more Winter Texan RV parks and subdivisions in Mission than in any other city in the Valley. They like the small town flavor, the warm weather and the lesser amount of humidity than is found closer to the coast. Many Winter Texans say they have less trouble with arthritis in Mission than along the coast. But there are other reasons to stay in Mission as well. For Winter Texans who enjoy nature and the outdoors, there are several attractions in or near Mission. The national headquarters of the World Birding Center (WBC) is located on Bentsen Palm Drive at the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. This is a unique area with several ecosystems represented and

Loesser’s score includes fan-favorites such as “Luck Be A Lady,” “If I Were A Bell,” “Adelaide’s Lament,” “Sit Down You’re Rocking the

Boat,” and more. With its unforgettable songs and a cast of gamblers, gals and gangsters, “Guys & Dolls” is musical entertainment sure to entertain. Performances will be at the McAllen Memorial High School Auditorium at 101 E. Hackberry and will run on Dec. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling 956-632-5258. The Museum of South Texas History (“MOSTHistory”) will introduce The CacheTones, a musical group making waves across the Rio Grande Valley, for a distinctive musical Sunday Speaker Series experience Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. The CacheTones is a vibrant duo that performs a new genre of music, “Rhythm & Bliss.” Band members Rich Heart and Ernesto Vergara will perform an exclusive show in the Grand Lobby at the Museum of South Texas History. They will be performing a mix of salsa, reggae and cumbia

with the support of keyboards, congas and rhythm instruments such as the cowbell. The duo will be available for comments and questions pertaining to the music genre. Bring family and friends to enjoy an afternoon of spirited music that celebrates the joys of living. Museum admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors 62 and older. The Museum of South Texas History is located at 200 North Closner Blvd., in Edinburg. For more information, call MOSTH at 956-383-6911.

South Texas College (STC) Theatre is ready to light some fireworks with their 2015 production of Beth Henley’s comedy, “The Miss Firecracker Contest.” The production will run Nov. 19 - 21, starting at 8 p.m., with an additional Sunday, Nov. 22 matinee at 2 p.m. All performances will take place at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts Main Stage, located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. Set in Brookhaven, Mississippi, just days before the Fourth of July, Carnelle Scott, A.K.A. “Miss Hot Tamale,” is rehearsing furiously for the Miss Firecracker Contest in the hopes of salvaging her tarnished reputation and leaving town in a blaze of glory. When her cousin, Elain, and eccentric brother, Delmount, come home for a visit, their pasts and secrets catch up to them, causing all kinds of challenges for Carnelle. The hilarity begins when everyone rallies to help Carnelle win the pageant while trying to escape her problems. “I fell in love with this play the first time I saw it when I was in college,” says Director Joel Jason Rodriguez. “Carnelle’s desire to be accepted, and what she learns about herself by trying to make that

happen is the reason I love this play so much. This play is filled with so many hilarious situations and off the wall characters. I think we can all identify with them at some level.” General admission tickets are $10. Senior citizen tickets are $5. The play contains some strong language and mature themes. The Nov. 22 matinee production will be interpreted in American Sign Language. Cash ticket purchases can be made one hour before the performance at the box office. If use of a credit or debit card is desired go online using a credit or debit card at https://secure.touchnet.com/ C20193_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=13 prior to the show.

Folks at Mission West enjoy ice cream social

By Kathy Olivarez A visit to an ice cream social at Mission West gave the Winter Texan Times an opportunity to ask people who attended what they like to do in the Rio Grande Valley. Although it is still early in the season, residents are starting to trickle in said Brenda Hill, former manager of Mission West, who was in change of the ice cream social. Bob and Sylvia Jolliff of Indiana say they spend mot of their time participating in activities at the park and on the

Gary and Bonnie Han

golf course. They enjoy bingo and Sylvia takes part in the beanbag baseball games on Tuesdays and enjoys water aerobics. They love the shows from Branson with stars like John Sager and other shows like the Redhead Express and Goldwing Express. The couple eats most of their meals in the park and take part in most park sponsored meals but do enjoy eating out at one of the burger places or a steakhouse. The couple has previously taken part in a World Gospel Mission sponsored by the Wesleyan Church and found there was a school in McAllen sponsored by the mission, so the volunteer they time there one day a week. When they first started coming down to the Valley, they enjoyed visiting Monterrey and other sites in Mexico but now only go to Progreso. They also love going to the Don-Wes Flea Market. Fred May of Ontario, Canada said his favorite thing to do in the Valley is eat. He enjoys the meals provided for the park but likes the roadhouse restaurants when he goes out to eat. Bob also enjoys taking motorcycle trips. He participates in poker rallies and other charity rides around the Valley. Mission West has a group of about 10 riders who travel to the Hill Country northwest of San Antonio and even as far as Big

Bend National Park. These trips are usually in December or March. His wife, Darlene, enjoys golf and line dancing and the park’s beanbag baseball games. She also enjoys crafts and helped crochet and knit caps for local school children last year. The couple goes to dances all over the Valley. They enjoy shopping in Progreso but do not go into other parts of Mexico. Jerry McHenry of Oklahoma has been coming to the RGV since 2002 and enjoys playing all kinds of board games. He gets his exercise playing golf, and he loves the jams in the park, especially the Sunday Gospel Jams. His favorite thing is eating and he loves all the different foods he finds in the Valley, especially the Mexican food. Allen and Cheryl Unrue came to the Valley from Kansas because they love to square dance. They enjoy dancing at the Peppermint Palace with Jerry Story as caller and also other parks across the Valley. They have been coming for 23 years. “We have watched a great deal of change since we first started coming when there were still agricultural fields along the expressway between the cities. Now it is just one long city,” says Cheryl. “Unfortunately,” says Cheryl, “square dancing in a lost art and many of the clubs that were here have now dissolved beSee MISSION WEST pg. 15

Allen and Cheryl Unrue cause young people do not square dance. When they first came to the Valley they could travel all over Mexico so they made one trip down the east coast to Veracruz, the pyramids and Oaxaca to see the Mayan ruins. They made another trip to Puerto gVallarta on the west coast. They made a trip to Old Guerrero and Battery City, where everything is made of batteries. They are saddened it is no longer safe to visit these destinations that many Winter Texans would enjoy seeing. They have come to love Mexican food and also enjoy the local steakhouses.

It is a unique experience in that many species of butterflies have discovered, including some seldom spotted in the United States. Call 956-583-5400 for directions, hours and information. To learn more about the ecology along the Rio Grande River, the Riverside Dreamer, a pontoon boat, takes visitors up and down the river between Anzalduas Dam and Bentsen State Park. The boat ride offers a leisurely way to enjoy views of the wildlife, water fowl and scenic vistas that can only be seen from the river. Since the Riverside Dreamer dock is right next to the Riverside Club, the club has become a Winter Texan hot spot for dinner, live music and drinks. Call 956-5814477 for more information. And a little to the west is Rancho El Charco, located at 124 Kika de la Garza Blvd. in La Joya. About a 15-minute drive from McAllen, this is a must-see spot that offers wagon rides, a petting zoo with all kinds of animals, as well as biking and hiking opportunities to enjoy the birds, wildlife and fauna of the RGV outdoors. Monte Carlo Restaurant is Donna’s Hidden Jewel

“We come here to eat two to three days a week,” said Pastor Robert Holoday of Zion Lutheran Church in Alamo. “Most people learn about Monte Carlo from someone who has eaten here. It’s a hidden secret in Donna.” “We were introduced to Monte Carlo by some Winter Texans in our church and have been coming ever since because the food is good and the prices are reasonable.” “We especially like to eat here on Sundays because they serve ham, which is excellent,” the pastor added. “Many members of our congregation come and they love the chicken fried steak.” Located at 1705 Miller Ave. in Donna, one block south of Bus. 83, the restaurant serves economical meals with most still being under $10. The restaurant serves lunch only and is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., although they do catering for special events and can do special parties on request. The menu includes shrimp and fish; seven kinds of hamand the Tampiquena. And all were under $10. burgers, a variety of Mexican foods and its daily specials of I ordered the Mexican plate that consisted of a beef enchicken fried steak, grilled chicken breast, a Mexican plate chilada, a beef taco, rice and beans served with chips and salsa. The food was good and not greasy at all. The chips were crisp and the salsa had a good flavor. According to our waitress, this plate is the restaurant’s number one bestseller. Norma, Advertising Manager for the Winter Texan Times, joined me for lunch and had the chicken fried steak. She gave me a bite and I found it to be tender and tasty. Raul, also a member of the Winter Texan Times advertising staff, joined us and had the chicken breast. I tasted it as well and found it to be the best chicken breast I have ever eaten in a restaurant. The flavor was excellent and the chicken was very tender. Both of their meals were accompanied by three sides: mashed potatoes, corn and green beans. Monte Carlo has been in business for 55 years – since 1960 – so they have had plenty of time to get it right, said Raul, who has eaten there on many previous occasions. “It’s a hidden jewel in Donna.”

Go with Jo has many exciting travel destinations

One of the advantages of retirement is having the time to travel. While wintering in the Rio Grande Valley, many Winter Texans enjoy taking advantage of short excursions to nearby destinations such as San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Gruene, King Ranch and other Texas locations. Go with Jo Tours offers tours to all these destinations as well as an array of other locations including New Orleans and Las Vegas. She also continues to offer trips to interior Mexico and other international destinations. San Antonio is a favorite destination and three trips are planned for this year. On Nov. 27 the San Antonio Lights Up Tour will include reserved seats for the 34th annual Holiday River Parade, two nights at the Drury Plaza River Walk Hotel, four meals and hot hors d’oeuvres, and visits to the Institute of Texas Cultures, the Guenther House & Steve’s Homestead, the SAS General Store, an evening riverboat cruise and the Alamo and Mission San Jose. The San Antonio Christmas tour is Dec. 13 with almost the same agenda minus the parade. Tours are $379 per person double occupancy. A combination San Antonio and

Fredericksburg getaway will be offered Dec. 18 with two nights in San Antonio and a trip to Fredericksburg Trade Days and Biergarten, the LBJ National Park & Texas White House, the San Jose Mission and Gruene, the original German colony in Texas. The final trip to San Antonio will include the San Antonio Rodeo. The dates are to be announced, but the rodeo is usually around the end of February. Liston is planning two King Ranch tours this year on Dec. 26 and Jan. 21. Learn the history of this ranch that is so much a part of the history of South Texas. It includes the 12-mile loop tour with a guide who gives the history of the King Ranch. On Nov. 16 and Dec. 5 visit the Christmas House near Falfurrias. The Minton Sisters love Christmas and every room of their home, including the bathroom is decorated for the holidays. The trip includes lunch and shopping at the Minton Sister’s Santa’s Workshop. The Christmas House has become a tradition for many Valley residents. Quilters get ready! Jo plans a tour See GO WITH JO pg. 19

And other new national chain stores and restaurants are finding the Mission area to be a thriving economic center. The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, located in a beautiful building at 202 W. Tom Landry, extends a warm invitation for Winter Texans to come take a look at what Mission has to offer. Stop by the chamber office a pick up a few brochures and a map of the area to make your stay a little more enjoyable as you explore Mission.

The historic Shary Museum was built by John H. Shary, the land developer who came to be known as “Father of the Teas Citrus Industry

Merced In January, “MISSION HISTORSolis rose to great heights as a wrestler. ICAL ICON: The Life of Tom Landry” program will open honoring this beloved coach who spent his childhood in Mission. Last year, the courtyard between the two buildings was renovated and beautified with wonderful landscaping, a butterfly garden, pavers, paths and facilities so it can be used for outdoor events. The museum courtyard will again be one of the sites for the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta in February. Last February, the museum put together a wonderful Mexican Mercado, bringing in artisans from Mexico who displayed and sold their art, pottery, clothing, candies and other goods. Live entertainment, including mariachis and other programs, were featured during the event. It was a first class production, and we look forward to another outstanding event this year. The museum will be presenting the 1939 Mission Eagles Football Team Dallas Cowboys legendary coach Tom Landry is pictured at center of the middle annual Mission Quilt Show in January along with a “Turning of the Quilts” row. He played quarterback for the Eagles.

The annex exhibit prepared for Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead created by Mission’s Sister Cities will remain up through November. There are altars prepared to honor departed members of the families with photos of them, the foods they like, music, toys, and many other things that tell about the person. The altars are a Spanish tradition that honors

Be sure and go by and vote for your favorite quilt – or enter a quilt of your own in the competition. New this year are cooking classes “En Mi Casita Pioneer Days” to be held Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 16. Participants will learn how to make tortillas, empanadas, pan de polvo, and tamales. From pg. 1 pital specializes in burns and plastic surgery. While no major treatments are given at the clinics in Pharr or La Feria, doctors assess how well patients are doing and decide if they need to be referred to one of the hospitals for further treatment. Certain minor treatments can be performed, but mostly the clinics are for evaluation purposes. McMillian said the burn clinic is smaller with only about 25 patients while the orthopedic clinic in La Feria sees 110 to 120 patients when it is in session. Dr. Norbury said 95 percent of the children seen in Pharr come from Mexico. When additional treatment is needed, the children and a guardian (who must be a blood relative) are transported to Galveston for treatment. Some children come from as far away as South America for treatment at the Shriners hospital. The hospital has also treated severely burned children from Nigeria and Kenya, as well as Taiwanese patients after an explosion occurred in that country. Dr. Norbury, who works in Galveston, said the Galveston hospital treats about 1200 patients a year and some receive multiple treatments during the year depending on their need. The children in Mexico are referred to the Shriners through a Mexican medical association. If children are in critical condition they can be transported by a special plane equipped for intensive care to get them to Galves-

ton. Some children stay as long as three to six months depending on the severity of their injuries. In addition to burns, the hospital also treats patients with defects such as microtia, which Dr. Norbury explained is a congenital malformation where a child is born without an ear. Doctors do plastic surgery and form an ear using rib cartilage. They also treat hemifacial microsomia, where one side of the face is smaller than the other side. Dale McMillian, a local Shriner, is in charge or arranging transportation to and from the burn hospital in Galveston and the orthopedic hospital in Houston. In the Valley Shriners have six 12-passenger vans that make two to three trips a week transporting children. Avril Bergman said he is a Winter Texan from Kansas who has already made 14 to 15 trips in 2015. Winter Texan Shriners willing to drive the vans provide a welcome relief for the men who live here year-round. Usually, on treatment day an early group leaves the border at between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. They stop for breakfast at a Whataburger in Corpus Christi. They arrive in time for afternoon appointments. Their evening meal is at the hospital, and the motel room for their overnight stay is paid for by Shriners. At one time the hotel they used gave the drivers their rooms free of charge, but that is no longer the case. Another group leaves the border later and arrives in time for morning appointments the next day. McMillian said one dilemma facing

27

the Valley clinics now is that Mexican children and their guardians must have passports and visas to cross the border. Many families cannot afford this cost. He suggested that perhaps Winter Texan church groups could take up special offerings one Sunday to help pay for the passports needed to get the children across the border for treatment. While he was unsure just how much a Mexican passport cost, he felt that if several church groups took special offerings, it would make it possible for more children to get treatments. Another problem the Shriners are facing is that many of the people who participate are elderly. Many of the Shriners working at the clinics are in their 80’s. “Young people are just not joining Shriners,” he lamented. “Part of it may be the cost of joining and the levels must be achieved.” McMillian first became a Blue Lodge or Masonic. Once that level is achieved men may opt for the York Rite of the Scottish Rite. Because of the ages of the men who participate there are few volunteers each year. The hospital is thinking of going to commercial transportation for the children at a great deal of added expense if there comes a time when drivers are not available. “Anyone who knows a child in need of Shriners’ services may call 800-237-5055 and get additional information,” McMillian concluded.
