Christmas House celebrates 30th season
By Kathy Olivarez The Christmas House is now in its 30th year of being open for public tours. Visiting the house, which is just north of Falfurrias, has become a holiday tradition for many Valley residents. It is owned and operated by three sisters, Janie, Esther and Dorothy Minten, who are quite possibly Santa’s best elves, because they love Christmas so much! Yes, they actually live in The Christmas House! Admission to the house is only $8, of which the sisters donate $1 to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. Since they first started this benefit to Driscoll many years ago, through the end of last season, with this portion of the admission fees, their own personal donations, friends and family donating in lieu of an admission fee, and the “Organ Fund,” the sisters have raised $308,860 for children’s cardiology care. The Minten Sisters keep the house decorated until June each year when they take everything down. On July 21, which was their father’s birthday, they begin redecorating for the new season so they are ready to open again in the fall. When decorating is complete, each room has a different theme. That includes a walk-in closet!
In keeping with this year’s theme of the 30th season, the wreaths over the door where guests enter the house are decorated with pearls, which are the symbol for a 30year anniversary. The entrance is filled with a nostalgic theme, which includes antique dolls and toys. One of the toys, a 107-yearold teddy bear, was a gift from Santa to their mother and her sister, Margarett. He is one of the sisters’ most beloved treasures. The dolls, gifts from Santa to the two oldest sisters in the 1930s, were seated on furniture made by their mother from orange crates. Another room is filled with all kinds of Christmas decorations, including a carved Santa Claus given to the sisters by a Winter Texan who now lives in Pharr. An antique chest made to hold surveyors’ maps and purchased at an antique store in 1987, holds the history of Santa Claus with a display of Santas wearing various costumes according to where they originated. Inside a den, where the theme is music, a wall unit is filled with items from North Pole and Original Snow Villages. Each vignette represents different Christmas songs. Janie shared the meaning of each one with the group and said the names of the songs are displayed with the scenes they represent. Tour guests are always given time to

Performances added to Brownsville Holiday Village
Since its beginning in 2010, Brownsville’s annual Holiday Village has grown each year thanks to the efforts of many volunteers who make this Christmas tradition happen. According to Laurie Ray, the idea for a Holiday Village came to Brownsville residents after reading about a similar village in a small town 1000 miles away. The village became a reality and is located inside the Mitte Cultural District in Dean Porter Park. The spirit of Christmas has grown each year as more and more groups provide cottages to participate in the holiday event. The cottages are set up for an opening the Monday before Thanksgiving and they stay on display through January 1. Each cottage is based on a different holiday theme and built to architectural specifications given by the city. The talThe Holiday Mart is one of the many dec- ents of many interior designers went into orated cottages at the Holiday Village. the development of the interiors of the

Christmas Music “I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus.” Photo by Kathy Olivarez. and the woman asked if she would play it for them. Dorothy jokingly said, “Sure, for a nickel!” Dorothy immediately told her that she was joking, as it is a tradition to play it for every group that tours the house, so she would get to hear it later. At the end of the tour, even though it was a joke, the woman “tipped” Dorothy with a nickel insisting that she put it on the organ and leave it there for the rest of the season. Dorothy said she would, but she wouldn’t keep it for herself. She said that at the end of the season (two an a half months later) that nickel would be added to the donations to help children in South Texas who have heart problems. At the end of that season, other guests in subsequent tours had left money, and the total donated ended up being $66.55. That tradition of putting money on the organ after Dorothy plays “Silent Night” has been perpetuated ever since. That group of guests have had a standing reservation to be first for the last 25 years. Because of their dedication in starting the “Organ Fund,” a total of $74,108.61 has been donated by tour guests through the end of last year’s season. After the “Organ Fund” was first started, the Mintens made a pact with each other that they would never start this “Organ Fund,” but if it was started by a guest, they would let it continue for that season. Well, it has been, and the rest is history. The sisters operate their Christmas store, Santa’s Texas Workshop, in the house built by their grandfather in 1926, and where they were raised as children. They sell hard-to-find Christmas items that people might want, including the wall clocks. These clocks are so popular that the sisters are one of the clock company’s top dealers in the nation. Nine years ago the sisters made a sug-
gestion to the company to make a clock with some traditional hymns It took two years to convince the company, but they finally decided to try it. The sisters were asked to recommend the songs for the clock. They made a list of 10 popular older hymns, and out of the list they submitted, “Amazing Grace,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “Jesus Loves Me,” “How Great Thou Art,” “In the Garden,” and “Ave Maria” were selected. Those hymns are now on many of the clocks manufactured by the company.
Money left on organ is given to Driscoll Children’s Cardiac Unit. See CHRISTMAS HOUSE pg. 4

There are so many things to see, it is impossible to go into more detail, but everyone ought to visit the Christmas House. The house will be open for this season through April, 2016. Harold’s Country Kitchen offers foods in a Midwest tradition
For some “down home” Midwestern style cooking, Winter Texans who find the Tex-Mex cuisine prevalent in the Rio Grande Valley a bit too spicy, the place to go is Harold’s Country Kitchen in Donna. The restaurant, located at 2221 E. Bus. 83, began in 1955 when a Midwest transplant named Harold Lewsaedaer moved from Illinois to work in the citrus industry. Not long after he arrived, a disastrous freeze wiped out much of the citrus, and Lewsaedaer had to find another source of income. His solution was to open a restaurant in one room of his house. Harold’s quickly became a popular place to eat even before the large influx of Winter Texans arrived. Gradually, the restaurant took over the entire house. In 1999, Lewsaedaer sold the restaurant to Ray Limas who adopted the attitude, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” He has kept all of Harold’s original recipes and everything served in the restaurant is fresh and made from scratch. Limas has lightened up some of the recipes to make them healthier, using healthier oils but that down-home cookin’ flavor is still preserved in every dish. Limas serves buffet style and offers a bargain of all-youcan-eat for just $9.99 plus tax, and that includes the drink and dessert.
Dishes found on the buffet the day the Winter Texan Times staff went included beef ribs – a mid-western favorite – fried chicken, brisket, and a botana-style dish with sausage, peppers and onions. There were fresh green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni and dumplings – another mid-western favorite. There was also an array of desserts including several types of cake, banana pudding and cobbler. Guests have a choice of cornbread or a roll. In a week or so when more Winter Texans arrive, sauerkraut, and other mid-western favorites will be added to the buffet. Raul declared the fried chicken the best he had ever eaten, while Norma said the macaroni was “cheesier” than most. Kathy loved the cornbread and hot peach cobbler. Norma said the soup was very good and Kathy enjoyed the fresh salad ingredients. Limas has several rooms plus an outdoor garden space that can be reserved for special events such as Winter Texan reunions. Harold’s also caters events, so if there are parks that want a home cooked meal without having to do the cooking, Limas is happy to provide it. After enjoying lunch at the restaurant, it is no wonder that it has long been a favorite with Winter Texans!

Edinburg Chamber Staff
Edinburg welcomes Winter Texans
Edinburg Chamber of Commerce hosted a “Welcome Back” Winter Texan fiesta last Thursday, Nov. 19, with residents of Edinburg parks filing all the tables. Keys and Strings played a variety of music including country western and some lively polka music for visitors to dance. The chamber served barbecue sandwiches and drinks, then brought two large cakes with the words “Welcome Back” to serve to the crowd. The Winter Texan Times took the opportunity to visit with many in the crowd and ask what they like about coming to the Valley. Being with friends they have made in their respective parks seemed
to be the number one answer. The parks offer many activities and meals throughout the season so the park residents, who have much in common, often develop close friendships get while they are in the Valley. Margaret Watson, of Lazy Palms park, said the park was filling quickly as there are already 100 more here this year than at the same time last year. She pointed down the table and said all the people seated there were from Lazy Palms. Susan Courteau, of Minnesota, expressed it best when she said what she enjoys most is “fellowship with her winSee EDINBURG pg. 23

She said she is actually a third generation Winter Texan. Mary Ann Maunder, of Manitoutin Island, Ontario Canada, said she enjoys being away from the ice and snow already coming down in Ontario. While in the Valley she can golf daily if she wishes, or she can go to Mexico and sightsee and then eat a meal in one of the restaurants. Her husband, John Maunder added, “there is no slowdown here due to cold icy weather.” Rose Stoltz agreed, saying, “I can go out with friends, spend a day in Mexico or participate in park activities without having to worry about ice and snow. At the Texas Trails table, Bill Bell said he and his wife, Wanda, liked the Valley so much they moved here from Oklahoma. He enjoys playing golf at Ebony Golf Course with a group from the park on Tuesdays. He enjoys having time to watch TV and relax, but he also enjoys his hobby of woodcarving. Emma and Michael Winsett of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Gary Stone of Paris, Texas reside at Texas Trails RV Park. They enjoy dancing and motorcycle riding. They are part of a group of riders who go out for a Sunday morning breakfast somewhere in the Valley, riding their motorcycles to get there. Keith and Joyce Buchanan of Michigan and Citrus Mobile RV Park love the friendly welcome they receive in the Rio Grande Valley. They often go to South Padre Island for the day and like to eat out at Berta’s Burgers and Gonzalez’s. And they never miss a performance at the La Joya Performing Arts Center. They also enjoy the Christmas Tuba Concerts. Kay and Melvin Meier of Nebraska and Citrus Mobile RV Park enjoy sightseeing and learning about the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico. They enjoy visiting the local birding centers and going to South Padre Island. And they love to eat out, especially at Applebee’s and the Roadhouse in McAllen.
