Hidalgo’s Christmas tradition lights up the night sky
HIDALGO – It’s now a long-standing Valley tradition. This little Valley city’s residents believed they could—and they did. One of the largest arrays of holiday decorating to be found, the switch is turned on and the show begins at sunset every night in December for Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights. A wide range of events keep the party going all month long. The displays, music and programs are centered at the city grounds at 704 E. Texano Dr., but extend to other areas of the city. Trolley and horse and carriage tours allow visitors to take in the multiple sites of Christmas displays around the city or personal vehicles can be used. This year’s theme, “An Intergalactic Christmas,” began with the Christmas night parade in front of city hall on Dec. 1. Visitors are invited to attend wearing their favorite Star Wars attire. At the city hall grounds, visitors can take in the larger-than-life displays covered with thousands of lights—that are probably visible all the way at the North Pole. From Dec. 3 to 20, the entertainment line-up each evening includes school

The Valley’s biggest Christmas parade will be held in McAllen on Saturday, Dec. 5, complete with over 36 helium balloons (look for Big Bird, the Ogre and Mrs. Santa Claus to name a few), over 50 floats and
many marching bands. The 2015 theme is “Movies on Parade.” It will be the largest holiday illuminated parade in Texas. The fun begins at 6 p.m. at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
McAllen Holiday Parade gets even better
Over 200,000 people turned out to see the inaugural Christmas parade in 2014. Planning a new route this year, the parade will begin at the high school football stadium and move north on Bicentennial Blvd., ending at Houston Street. There will be a concert by Enrique Iglesias at the stadium before the parade begins. Actor Esai Morales who appeared in the movies, “La Bamba,” “Bad Boys” and “Spare Parts” as well as having roles on “NYPD BLUE,” “Criminal Minds” and “Miami Vice,” will serve as Grand Marshal of the parade. Disney star Laura Marano, who has the lead role as Ally in “Austin & Ally” will be in the parade. David Zepeda, best known for roles in several telenovelas and films such as “Acorralada,” will also take part in the parade. Dean Canty
Dean Canty Big Band Brings Christmas to Quinta Mazatlan
By Roda Grubb Dean Canty grew up in radio’s heyday where all means of entertainment came out of that little box with a speaker screen. “My mother always had the radio on, listening to music because we didn’t have TV,” chuckled Dean Canty, a tall, vital man with sparkling eyes. “Every Saturday my older sister and I had to clean the house, so we did it listening to the Texaco Opera Broadcasts. We’d both sing parts.” Though his father was only an appreciative bystander to all the musical goings on in the home, his mom and sisters took their musical talents to the church choir and lifted up their voices around the house. “I guess it turned me on,” Canty related. “I was walking down the school hall one day when a hand reached out, pulled me into a classroom and the person said, ‘You do real good in music class. Why don’t you come be in the band?’” He didn’t know it but his career had begun. In six weeks he had memorized his first solo, went to contest and won first diSee CANTY pg. 3

CANTY
From pg. 1 vision. “I was hooked! I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life.” That moment in sixth grade stood out like a burning light in his memory banks. Following the direction of his school’s band directors gave Canty a firm foundation in the trumpet and enhanced his love of music. Following his passion, he got his bachelor’s degree in music at Texas Western College, now UTEP, his Master’s at North Texas State University, now University of North Texas in Denton, and his doctorate in conducting at UT Austin. All didn’t go as smooth as a river stone, however. At one point he decided he didn’t want to go through with his doctorate and resolved to become a medical doctor instead. Believing he was too old and they wouldn’t take him, he continued on with his doctorate in conducting. Happily for the music world, he learned after it really was too late that the school of medicine would have taken him with open arms. “But, I’m very happy with what I chose.” He lit up with joy. “I love performing. I love what I’m doing.” Wanting to teach in college he left Texas to go to Gunnison, Colorado. “I went there for a year but it was cold, 26 below that year,” Canty said. “It’s beautiful up there, but I wanted to come back to Texas.” When the job opened at UT-Pan American (then known as Pan American College) he couldn’t make it to the interview because of the one plane a day east and one plane a day west schedule. Where there’s a will there’s a way and finally a phone call sealed the deal and Canty headed south to Edinburg, Texas, in 1967. Creating his Big Band combo in ’73, for 22 years they played every Friday and Saturday and during the week for weddings and receptions. “You have to understand that the concept of trying to run a Big Band in mariachi country was a little insane,” he laughed. Changing music styles of the youngsters of the 2000s brought the end to their weekly gigs and now Canty’s Big Band, made up of local music teachers and directors, is only heard about six times a year. Now retired from 43 years of teaching at Pan Am, with a nine year stint as department head, Canty still keeps busy with his music.
Answering requests for help from around the world in fixing Big Band arrangements, he continues to delight in being part of the music world. “Music is what I’m going to be doing the rest of my life. I don’t know what else I’d do.” A sense of contentment settles around him as he leans back in his chair. Canty is an alumnus of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with Warren Covington, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with Lee Castle & Bill Tole and Les Elgart. He has appeared as first trumpet with Bob Hope, Julio Iglesias, Vikki Carr, Jerry Lewis, and many others. Located in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, the band has performed locally, nationally and in Mexico for over thirty-five years, backing such groups as the Platters, Four Diamonds, Four Aces, Four Lads, Gene White Show from Las Vegas, and 4 Wunnerful Girls from the Lawrence Welk Show. Bringing his Holiday Concert to Quinta Mazatlan for the fourth time, Dean Canty’s Big Band will present an hour’s worth of Christmas music from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, all for $5 a person with tickets at the door. The band will play outdoors on the north lawn of McAllen’s White House with a special appearance by Santa Claus, cookies and cider. Please dress for the weather. The Dean Canty Big Band consists of 18 swinging musicians and one female vocalist, Ani Tharpe. The band performs music from the libraries of and in the style of Harry James, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, the Dorsey Brothers and other nationally known bands. “I wanted a place to give a Christmas music concert. I called the director, Colleen Hook, and told her of my idea. ‘Trust me!’ I told her. She did and now we have people calling to ask, ‘When’s Dean’s Christmas concert?’” With attendance at 700 to 800 per show, it’s best to arrive early for good seats. When it comes to his music, Canty’s philosophy is the same as Barbra Streisand. “I just want it right.” To see it done right, head for Quinta Mazatlan and watch the world renown Dean Canty bring the love of his life – music – alive in heart-warming Christmas classics with a twist. RGV Quilt Show moves to South Padre Island
Due to a conflict in scheduling for the dates of the annual show, the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild (RGVQG) Show will be moved from McAllen to South Padre Island in 2016. It will be held Feb. 2021 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. According to Florea Flores of the RGV Quilt Guild, interest in the military quilt program peaked after a recent article in the Winter Texan Times. The program is supported by the guild and is chaired by Mary Jo Haverson and Deb Blackbourn. Quilters meet 10 months a year to work on quilts for military and retired military. All quilts made by the guild stay in the Rio Grande Valley. They are given to veterans at various American Legion halls and the South Texas Veterans Home in McAllen.
Most quilts are given away during November to March when Winter Texans are present, but arrangements can be made for quilts to be presented at other times of the year. Anyone interested in helping to make quilts for the military can check the RGV Quilt Guild’s website at www.rgvqg.com for dates, times and locations. Even those who cannot sew can be helpful in other ways. The guild has red, white and blue material available, but future seamstresses need to bring their sewing machines, and basic sewing supplies to the meetings. Military quilts measure 60 by 72 inches. For further information or to recommend someone to receive a quilt, call Deb Blackbourn at 608-485-0815 or email deborahblackbourn@yahoo.com.

Theater company presents play at Tip O’ Texas
Pharr Community Theater Company will present a special Winter Texan performance of their original historical story, musical, drama play “The Last Battle of the Civil War” at Tip O’ Texas RV Resort, Thursday Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. The play is a two act historical musical drama by Jefferson Williams, directed by Pedro Garcia and Gabriela Pedraza in a background setting of the last battle of the Civil War fought just east of Brownsville near the Rio Grande River and Palmito Ranch. Port Isabel Lighted Boat Parade is Saturday
Boats of all sizes, from kayaks to yachts, will participate in Port Isabel’s 28th annual Lighted Boat Parade Saturday, Dec. 5 beginning at 6 p.m. along the shores of the Laguna Madre. Boats will begin at Southpoint Marina where participants will be judged. Then they will make their way across the Laguna Madre to South Padre Island’s Bayfront, then ending at Louie’s Backyard for final judging. You can take your lawn chairs and set up at many places along the coastline both in Port Isabel and on South Padre Island to see the boats as they pass. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in six divisions including commercial boats, small powerboats (under 18 feet), medium powerboats, large powerboats (over 30 feet), sailboats 25 feet and under, and sailboats 26 feet and over. Vessels are judged on first impressions, theme, special effects, amount of lights and animated characters. Winners will be announced at Louie’s Backyard after the parade.
PARADE From pg. 1
