Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 28, No. 06 © 2014 Free TubaChristmas concert Dec. 7 at UTPA

The Rio Grande Valley community is invited to enjoy an oompah-good holiday time at the annual RGV TubaChristmas concert presented at The University of Texas-Pan American Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in the UTPA Fieldhouse. The free concert features instruments in the tuba family, including sousaphone, baritones and euphoniums played by musicians ages 8 to 80. Guests will be amazed with the instruments’ intricate sounds and the festive appearance of the horns that are often adorned with Christmas season decorations. They will enjoy traditional holiday favorites – from “Silent Night” to “Jingle Bells” and more. All UTPA tuba and euphonium majors will also assist and play in the event. This year’s special guest artist for the concert is Matthew Murchison, who is solo euphonium with the River City Brass Band in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia and considered one of the world’s best euphonium/tuba musicians. “TubaChristmas” is a music concert held in cities worldwide that celebrates See TUBACHRISTMAS pg. 22

McAllen brings new ideas to Christmas celebration

Many changes await holiday visitors at the City of McAllen annual holiday celebration Saturday, Dec. 6. Not only will there be a change in location for all the activities, but the city is planning the largest lighted Christmas parade in the State of Texas. The parade, which starts at 6 p.m., will feature over 40 lighted floats built around storybook themes, giant 25- to 60-foot-tall helium balloons in the shape of characters similar to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, and marching bands. Instead of events being located at Archer Park where it has been for many years, festivities have been moved to Bicentennial Blvd. for the parade, posada and the “Christmas in the Park” celebration. The parades will proceed down Bicentennial to Veterans Memorial Stadium, which is adjacent to the McAllen High School, where their festivities will be concluded. Christmas in the Park will be held See MCALLEN pg. 35

Holiday Village lights up the season

Brownsville’s Holiday Village, now in its fourth year, has become a popular holiday spot for people across the Rio Grande Valley. According to Sheri Conner, there are now 27 tiny Christmas cottages on display in Dean Porter Park to aid in the Holiday spirit. “We are delighted to see our village

grow each year and to have so many people coming to Brownsville to view this new holiday tradition,” said Conner. The lights were turned on Monday and the cottages are lit from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, for viewing, and 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Dean Porter Park, located across from the Gladys Porter Zoo, is open during the day so those who may not want to drive at night can still see the cottages without the lights on. Best of all, the exhibit is free of charge. Cottages representing the historic Stillman House, the Village Diner, Gingerbread Bakery and Santa’s Hunting and Fishing Lodge are favorites back on display again this year. These favorites are joined by several new ones, including the Village Accountants Cottage, the North

Pole Clinic, Holiday Mart and Home Sweet Home to add to the fun this year. Conner said there will be entertainment on weekends including local school groups, mariachis and, of course, opportunities to have pictures taken with Santa. Dean Porter Park is at 501 Ringgold Street across from the Gladys Porter Zoo.

Holiday Village Cottages on Display Brownsville’s Holiday Village features 27 imaginative cottages decorated with lights and Christmas décor as area residents eagerly await Santa’s annual visit. Admission is free and the park is open nightly.

RGV Vipers off to fast start

By Luciano Guerra The Rio Grande Valley Vipers are taking the NBA Development League by storm. Having won four of their five games so this season the Vipers are not only sitting atop the D League’s Southwest Division but with their only loss being by a 127-128 nail-biter against the Los Angeles D-Fenders they are just one field goal shy of having a perfect 5-0 record. Rio Grande Valley’s most recent victim was the Oklahoma City Blue, a Southwest Division rival, who invaded State Farm Arena Saturday night in hopes of improving their record to 2-0. However, it was the Vipers who walked off the court with a victory as 6-foot-10-inch, 245-pound center Earl Clark led Rio Grande Valley in scoring with 29 points and guard Nick Johnson, on assignment from the Houston Rockets, contributed 24 points of his own in the Vipers’ 131-125 win. In his second season as the Vipers head coach, Nevada Smith led Rio Grande Valley to a 30-20 record, a third place divisional finish and into the second round of the playoffs last season. While a head coach’s top priority is usually leading his team to as many wins as possible, the fact that the Vipers are a minor league team means that Smith’s first priority has to be preparing his players for possible call-up to the NBA. “When we get call-ups from Hous-

ton they are a priority for us,” explained Smith. “We have to make sure that we are putting the players in the spots where they can grow their game. We have a great ownership group here and with the Rockets that allows us to do that.” With Vipers players coming from all over the United States, the move to the Rio Grande Valley could lead to somewhat of a culture shock. However, as Smith explained, the support staff the team has provided has made the adjustment to the area much easier. “This is my second year in the Valley, so going into this season I knew what to expect,” said Smith. “We got here on a Sunday and started practicing on Monday and it was a big adjustment for the players. But everyone has opened their arms to us and with our ownership group, our team president Bert Garcia and the people in our front office doing such a good job of acclimating the players early, getting them into homes, having them meet people to help them get around, find restaurants and know where to go it’s been much easier on them.” Established in 2007, the Vipers are now in their eighth season as a member of the 18-team NBA Development League - the NBA’s official minor league. The “D” League’s purpose is to prepare players, Rio Grande Valley Vipers’ 6-foot-10, 225 pound center Earl Clark fights off two Oklahoma City defenders as he drives toward the basket during the Vipers’ 131-125 See VIPERS pg. 08 victory over the Blue. Zoo Nights and Lights planned this weekend

Mark the calendar for Dec. 5-7 because Gladys Porter Zoo will be hosting its annual Zoo Nights and Lights from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. Admission to the zoo for the event is free with a new unwrapped toy for the annual Toys for Tots campaign. This year there will be over 150-lighted fixtures of animals and Christmas traditions such as toy soldiers and bells. When the Winter Texan Times visited a week before the big event, Oscar Cerrillo of the zoo staff was busy decorating for the holiday by placing giant bulbs on a Christmas tree made of lights near the entrance of the

zoo. Cerrillo and his community service worker Rodolfo Giovannie Vento were setting up exhibits to be lighted all over the zoo. Zoo Public Relations Assistant Arianna Barrera said once the lighted decorations are in place, about 800 luminarias will be placed along the zoo’s pathways to light the way in the dark. Entries will be accepted Dec. 2 through Saturday, Jan. 3, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please use the office entrance on the north side at the museum’s two-story main office building (the Shary Building). The quilt show will open Saturday, Jan. 10 and run through Saturday, Feb. 7. The awards reception will take place Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. This will include “The Turning of the Quilts” program. On January 15 and 22 and Feb. 5 there will be quilting technique demonstration programs at 2 p.m. for quilters. The show will be judged Jan. 26. The ballot box for Viewer’s choice quilt will close on Feb. 4. Six categories of quilted items will be accepted: hand quilted bed quilts, machine-quilted bed quilts, mixed media (quilted items which incorporate non-traditional materials), wall hangings, wearable art and miscellaneous items (decorative or utilitarian items such as table runners and place mats). The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. Each item should be delivered to the museum in a cloth bag with the owner’s

name and phone number on it. Quilts must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. The museum uses rods that are 5/8 inches in diameter to hang quilts for display. Entries are on a first-come, first-accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible display for all entries. Participants may enter only one item See QUILT SHOW pg. 34

American Military Support aids veterans at Christmas

American Military Support has launched two campaigns designed to aid Veterans during the holiday season. One is the collection of items to be sent overseas. The second is a fundraiser is to pay the cost of mailing those items and to aid local veterans in the Rio Grande Valley. Quality of Life care packages are sent to local military serving overseas during the holiday season. Items needed include personal items including sunglasses, foot powder, hand and foot warmers, black work socks and shoe insoles. Other items include eyeglass cleaner, athletic foot cream, sunscreen, flea collars, mini first aid kits, sewing kits, body wipes, body powder, bath towels, hand towels, blankets (must be neutral colors) antibiotic ointment, pain relievers (any kind) and Bandaids®. Food products such as trail mix, granola bars, beef jerky, dried fruit, powdered drinks in individual packs, artificial sweetener or sugar packets, cereal (individual size boxes/bowls) and sugar-free cookies are needed along with 10 and 12 ounce foam cups, napkins, plastic spoons, small foam bowls and coffee stirrers. Those who wish to help can make a financial donation to American Military Support through PayPal to help deliver care packages or to aid local veterans at

the Texas Veterans Home. Garcia said donations are taken year-round but the current campaign ends on Dec. 31. According to Rudy Garcia of American Military Support, the upcoming military support concert to be held at Marine Military Academy is to raise money to help send the packages to soldiers from the Rio Grande Valley overseas. Garcia said items for the boxes can be dropped off at their warehouse located at 1103 S. Commerce in Harlingen. Donations are also being accepted at Green Beret on 10th Street in McAllen. Garcia said it costs $15.42 to mail each box to a veteran. He said the organization also assists homeless veterans living in local communities and those who are in the McAllen Veterans Nursing Home. For more information call Rudy Garcia at (956) 245-2898 or to volunteer services call Minnie Garcia at (956) 245-0733.

Paradise Park has new jam director

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

DECEMBER 4, 2014

Gifts made to Buckner in December doubled

Glen “Buddy” Collins has been selected as the new jam director for Paradise Park in McAllen. He began his singing career riding in the back of his Sis’s car. Every Sunday afternoon they would go for a drive with Glen singing Elvis songs. Glen played guitar but it was not until after he was in the service in the Philippines that he had lessons from an army buddy who was a music teacher. In 1965 at Travis Air Force Base, Glen formed his first band, “Buddy Collins and the Western Swingers.” The band opened for Bob Wills in Napa Valley and for Freddy Hart as a back up band.

In 1972 Glen had his own television show on KTUL, a leading channel in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He made guest appearances on The Ozark Country Opry and the Lil’ Opry in Arkansas. For the past few years, Glen has been playing bass guitar with his band, Levy Country. In August 2013, Glen was inducted into the Northwestern Western Swing Music Society at Auburn Eagles in Auburn, Washington. Paradise Park looks forward to a great year with Glen as the jam director. Jams are on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at 100 E. Hackberry.

Following the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Buckner International invites the Rio Grande Valley to kick off the Christmas season by giving back and providing hope to children and families. All gifts made to Buckner beginning Tuesday, Dec. 2 until Dec. 31 will receive matching funds, up to $100,000, thanks to a Challenge Gift made by generous Buckner supporters. From pg. 23 of groceries per family. Each child will receive a gift and a quilt from the quilters at Lakewood RV Resort. Families come from Stewart Place Elementary because the park provides mentors for the school. On Saturday, Dec. 13, the families come to the park for a party. Each child in the family is included in gift giving, regardless of whether they are toddlers or middle schoolers. Children will visit Santa and get cookies then go to an assigned table where there are park hosts who talk with each family. The hosts visit for about an hour and a half before the groceries are loaded into the family’s car to take home. Wright said the teachers select the families for the park because they know which families are the most needy on their campuses. The fundraisers help provide the money for the groceries. Lakewood RV Resort is located at 4525 Graham Road, Harlingen.

UTPA offers full line-up of theatre productions

The University of Texas-Pan American Edinburg campus is offering a line-up of theater productions this season. “Pastorela” by Martha Chavez de Palmerin will be presented Dec. 4-7. It is the traditional Mexican version of the joy and wonder of Christmas. It features posada songs, shepherds, an angel and the devil along with the Mexican custom of breaking a piñata. Fun for the entire family. The cost is not yet available. On March 4-8 “Evita” by Andrew Lloyd Weber will tell the colorful story of Eva Peron, second wife to Argentine dictator Juan Peron in a musical format. Although she was born an illegitimate child, Eva became one of the most powerful women in Latin American by defending Argentina’s poor and working class residents. This production is reserved seating at $12 a ticket. For those who stay a bit longer or year-round Texans, “True West” by Sam Shepard will be presented April 29-May 3. This play is about sibling rivalry between two estranged brothers, one a screenwriter and the other a thief, who have reconnected. Reserved seating for this production will be $8 per ticket. The year’s final production, “Coraline, the Musical” by Stephen Merritt and Da-

vid Greenspan, is based on the novella Coraline by Neil Gairman. It will be shown May 7-10, and tells the story of Coraline Jones, a delightful little girl who has plenty of time to explore since her parents are very busy. One day she finds a door to another world and it takes all of her brains and courage to outwit the things she finds there. Spellbinding for both children and adults. Tickets are $3 for this children’s adventure. Season tickets are available for Mainstage and PASS presentations for $60 and for Mainstage only for $50. Shows are Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday is a matinee at 2 p.m.

QUILT SHOW

From pg. 22 per person. Any quilt shown in the Mission Quilt Show in the past five years is ineligible for show this year. Mission Historical Museum is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays and the museum will be closed Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1. Admission is free. For more information call (956) 580-8646.

Downtown Harlingen announces ‘Holiday Word Game’ Cheryl LaBerge, Downtown Manager for Downtown Harlingen, asked that we let our readers know about this year’s free and fun holiday contest. She says Winter Texans loved the Harlingen Downtown contests the past two years, and this one sounds like a great activity. Downtown Harlingen announces a Holiday Word Game, which is free and open to the public, with an entry deadline of Jan. 4. Winners will be announced on Jan. 8.

ZOO

From pg. 10 sell Aquatics Center earlier this year. In addition to the lighted displays there will be performances by local bands and choirs to entertain guests and some arts and crafts for the younger crowd. After visiting the zoo, cross the street to Dean Porter Park and visit the Holiday Christmas Village to see the lighted cottages celebrating the holiday before heading home. Admission to the village is free. The zoo is located at 500 Ringgold Street in Brownsville. Take Expressway 77/83 to the 6th Street exit and proceed to Ringgold Street. Turn right and park. Dean Porter Park, where the Holiday Village is located, is right across the street from the zoo.

Prizes are gift certificates to Downtown Harlingen businesses. In order to play, individuals should visit Downtown Harlingen between Nov. 24 and Jan. 4. A total of 46 downtown businesses will be displaying Holiday Word Game posters in their windows. Entrants should collect the letters displayed on the Holiday Word Game posters and record them on a Holiday Word Game entry form. Entrants must correctly solve the word puzzle on the entry form in order to be entered into a drawing for prizes. No purchase is necessary but only one entry per person is allowed. Game rules and entry forms are available at the 46 participating Downtown Harlingen businesses, at the Harlingen Downtown office located at 209 W. Jackson. For more information, contact the Harlingen Downtown office, (956) 216-4910.

BUCKNER
