Mission Historical Museum will be accepting entries beginning Nov. 27 for the 13th Annual Mission Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in three categories: Hand-quilted bed quilts; Machine-quilted bed quilts; and Wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. Quilts and wall hangings exhibit must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in/first accepted basis. Last chance to see ‘Mamma Mia’

The Harlequin Club at Veterans Memorial High School has been rehearsing for months to bring another award-winning performance to the stage in Mission as they perform the final shows of this year’s musical “Mamma Mia.” The final show dates for this year’s production are Dec. 6, 7 and 8 at the Veterans Memorial High School Performing Arts Center. Showtimes are 7 p.m., nightly, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. This lighthearted musical and dance showcase ” has delighted audiences worldwide and has been a fan favorite on Broadway for 14 years. The Harlequins have an 18-year tradition of being the first to bring big time shows to the Valley, including “Chicago,” “Sweeney Todd,” “The Great Gatsby,” and “Hairspray,” as director and drama instructor James Hodgson brings out the best in his talented students. Tickets are available at the door or at the VMHS front office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seating is limited. Ticket prices are See MAMMA MIA pg. 22

Winter Texan Times announces Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Hole contest

Vote for your favorite golf hole online at www.wintertexantimes.com

Despite all the rumors and comments, the wind is NOT always in your face on every hole of every golf course in the Rio Grande Valley. It’s not true; not a chance. And as soon as we find out which hole it is, you’ll read about it right here in the Winter Texan Times. We promise. But for now we want to hear about your favorite holes in the Valley. You see, golfers are a unique breed. They can remember a hole they enjoyed playing – just once – 25 years ago down to the smallest of details (the pin was sitting 12 yards from the center on the back right edge of the green – and other mystifying facts). Razz Ma Tazz performing Christmas shows

Eighth period Razz Ma Tazz. Sound familiar? Probably not. Going to school “back in the day” was loaded with classes like math, English and social studies. Maybe some “wild stuff” like shop or home economics or even band and choir would make that schedule. Today, however, with so many options for students and so many after-school activities there are some very specialized classes. And if you watch the McAllen Rowe High School singing and dancing group Razz Ma Tazz, you’ll undoubtedly know why they have a special class – because, well, they are that special. The group, made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors have been performing throughout the Rio Grande Valley for 28 years. As one group of seniors graduate another group of first-year participants are selected. They began this year’s Winter Texan resorts tour on Sunday

and have several more shows coming up through December. All total they will perform their Christmas show 21 times, 17 of them open to the public. “We have some athletes, some in band, others in other activities so there would be no way to do it all if it wasn’t a fall semester class in this case,” said Rowe head choir director Stacy Gonzalez, who is in her fifth year as director of Razz Ma Tazz. “It wouldn’t be as successful but this program is by far the best in the Valley and has been, well before I got here.” Of course, as it is with most extracurricular activities, bonds strengthen between team/group members. It’s no different with the 16-member group. “That is what I really like the most,” said junior Aleena Flores. “We have this huge bond together and we all enjoy making music and See RAZZ MA TAZZ pg. 2

That’s just something special.” The group has a busy December schedule with 11 Winter Texan resort performances in 16 days – the first two on Sunday were at Casa del Valle and Valley View. “They are selfless and when they do their shows, they are very concerned about doing their very best,” Gonzalez said. “They want to entertain and create involvement. It’s a joy to watch them grow… it gives them confidence.” Confidence and enthusiasm are certainly ways to describe their show, which is packed with a variety of Christmas favorites. From a “Christmas on Broadway” medley to “Miss You Most at Christmas Time,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas” as well as “Grinch” and “Feliz Navidad,” the group dances, jokes and beautifully vocalizes the Christmas spirit on the stage and through the audience. Matthew Antonio is a senior and is in his third year with the group. He said as hard as we worked the first two years, he’s going “all out” this year. “My first year I relied a lot on the upperclassmen and I want the new mem-

Hundreds of dozens of cookies are turned out each week by Winter Texan crews from two parks in Mission, Hidden Valley Ranch and Leisure Valley Ranch. One of the crews busily baking every third Tuesday include, from left, Jerry Putz, Karen and Wilbert Schoenrath, Darrell Spaulding, JoAnn Putz and Gladys Spaulding. The Spauldings have baked for CHI for 12 years, the Putzes for five years and the Schoenraths for 10 years. The words “Having somewhere to go is home; having someone to love is family,” symbolizes the ministry of Children’s Haven International (CHI), a Pharr-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing loving Christian care for needy children in Reynosa, Mexico. Winter Texans and converted Texans have a crucial hand in making it possible for CHI to operate one of Reynosa’s oldest and largest children’s homes, along with a school that embraces the surrounding community. The facility, known locally as International Refuge for Children, consists of a 13-room school and seven recently remodeled group homes on a 14-acre site, which used to be the outskirts of Reynosa. Currently, there are 50 children cared for by dedicated house parents, according to Betsy Chacon, who with her husband Randall, have had oversight as CHI directors for the past 10 years. The children, ranging in age from infants to older teens, come from broken, abusive or impoverished homes, or no homes at all. Having been house parents and directors at the Refuge for Children for three years from 1997 to 2000, the couple experienced these children coming from situations where often the kids were left with grandparents by parents who didn’t want the responsibility, or it was a poverty because of absentee fathers. Chacon feels that “CHI stands be-

tween life and death for their children.” Among the hundreds who have passed through “Haven’s,” Christian environment, they have been cared for physically and spiritually while receiving an education that included hearing the gospel message. Sadly, a few of their graduates have died in drug cartel incidents. That might be one of the reasons that CHI lists prayer as number one priority in ministering to children. The prayers are for health and safety, discernment for CHI leadership in endeavors, grace and favor with government officials and authorities on both sides of the border, patience and unity for house parents and all staff and to invite new people to become ministry partners. CHI’s school has an enrollment of approximately 165 students, only 30 from the “Haven” homes with the rest from outside as an outreach to the adjacent community. Chacon speaks proudly of the CHI students’ accomplishments. One uneducated parent has had two sons at CHI, with one now a dentist and the other a teacher. Four students still living on campus are in college, two studying to become teachers, one to become a lawyer and another in computer science. While graduates usually end up in white collar jobs at the area Mexican factories, one student earned an engineering degree and was recruited to work in Houston on a permit. See HAVEN pg. 5

WINTER TEXAN TIMES HAVEN

From pg. 4 “The goal is to produce Mexican citizens who will be productive members of society,” Chacon emphasized. As the only paid staff, the ministry relies on volunteers to help the ministry. “Friends from across the border in the U.S. have always played a key role in the home’s development and continued support,” Chacon said. Financial support initially came 100 percent from Winter Texans, when CHI was started 45 years ago by Shirley Mendoza, originally from Flint, Michigan by way of central Mexico. Individuals still provide most of the direct financial support, with about 60 percent of it from Winter Texans. Beside financial donations, the help can take many forms, such as being part of the total operation of a thrift store at the Pharr location, which produces significant revenue, according to Chacon. Some of the donated items are passed on to other Christian ministries on both sides of the border. Full time Texans now, Karen Smith and her mother, Rosemary Jenner, work one morning a week in the thrift store, located at 400 East Minnesota Road. The pair, originally from Montana, said they were recruited six years ago by a neighbor in Pharr South Park, who was managing the store at the time. Smith does much of the work in displaying items on the store shelves. It takes 60 to 80 regular volunteers from a number of RV and mobile home parks to run the store. The store is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Residents of two parks in Mission, Hidden Valley Ranch and Leisure Valley Ranch, are among the Winter Texans doing a cookie bake each week. A half dozen come from Mission to turn on four ovens and spend about three hours baking approximately 100 dozen cookies, which goes to the campus, is used to treat tour groups visiting the school, for special events and is given away in the thrift store to customers. Kermit Larson, from Leisure Valley,

www.wintertexantimes.com

coordinates the bakers from the two parks from now until the end of March, plus supplies batches of cookie dough each week, according to Jerry Putz, a Winter Texan from Lacona, Iowa. Darrel Spaulding, a Winter Texan from Altoona, Iowa, related walking in his park and Larson, who is on the CHI board, recruited him to help for a short time every couple of weeks. That was 12 years ago. Word of mouth led to more neighbors joining in the project. An “undercover” event staged by Hidden Valley supporters the third Sunday in February results in enough underwear to meet the needs of the students for an entire year, according to Wilbert Schoenrath, a Winter Texan from Swan River Manitoba, Canada. There is also support from outside the “Valley,” such as the Fenton United Methodist Church, where members sew pajamas every year. The members produced 46 pairs for students this time, which were brought by Winter Texans returning to the “Valley” for the winter. Chacon said many churches of various denominations contribute items like that. While clothing for students is always welcomed, this is the time of year when toys are a predominant request. And a toy drive is on now. Toys can be brought to thrift store. Some people have sponsored a “Haven” child, with commitments starting as low as $25 a month. Attending a fundraising event is another way to help CHI, or help at the administration headquarters in a number of ways. A tour of the children’s home and school in Reynosa can also be arranged. “Should you like to put your gifts or talents to work somewhere that will truly make a difference in the life of a needy child, please contact us,” Chacon said. “There is a place for you at Children’s Haven.” To find out more about CHI opportunities, call 956-787-7378 or just stop at the Pharr thrift store on Minnesota Road, just east of the Highway 281 freeway. One can also look them up on Facebook, through a link at their website—www.childrenshaven.org.

From pg. 1 That’s why we’re counting on you. We want you to pick your favorite holes at public courses in the Rio Grande Valley. Not your favorite golf course – we’ll have that contest in January-February. But for this contest we want you to tell us which holes you like most. Pick no more than two holes per golf course and choose up to 10 favorites. You could pick one hole or two holes per course, up to 10 picks. You don’t have to pick all 10, just pick as many as you like.

To vote for your favorite holes, go online at www.wintertexantimes.com and complete the online ballot. And everyone who votes in our contest will be entered in our drawing for free rounds of golf and other prizes. Entry deadline is December 31, 2018. Following is the first of a three-part series featuring some of the Valley’s signature holes at public courses. Feel free to send us your input and be sure to vote for your favorite holes. Then we’ll announce which holes are the winners of the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Holes contest. These are some of our favorite holes. Monte Cristo isn’t one of them. This course is up Highway 281 and on Kenyon Road, and adjacent to Wrigley’s RV Park. The signature hole is No. 13, a par 4 island hole that sits 128 yards from the white tees. You’re going to want to land short on this beautifully laid out hole. One of the nicest closing holes in the Valley is the 407yard, par 4 No. 18 that ends with a daring long shot over a lake, unless you take the safe route and go up along the left side. (But does anyone do that?) Tierra Santa has wide open fairways, but fairways that dogleg left and right and being on the wrong side of one could add 100 yards to next shot – the wind can seem especially aggressive on this course. A perfect example is right off the bat at No. 1, a 358-yard, par 4. Keep your tee shot down the middle on this late dogleg left. You want to be far enough right so

From pg. 6 course, Los Lagos is inundated with rolling hills, fairways that lean toward water and sand traps, residential areas blocking you (well trying to block you) from cutting off those doglegs, tiered putting greens – and wind. The par 3 No. 14 hole is the course’s top handicap hole and signature hole. It plays 140, but pin placement is critical on this kidney-shaped green that is guarded by water on the left and a very large pot bunker. This is a hole where undoubtedly you will have to take the wind into consideration. No. 18 is a par 5, 502-yard bomb of a hole. If you haven’t met the South Texas winds by the time you got here, feel blessed. The yardage is long enough but the sand, wind and water make this a hole you’ll want to be patient with.

Tierra del Sol Hole #6 Tierra del Sol 700 E. Hall Acres Road, Pharr (956) 702-2320 Standing on No. 6 at Tierra del Sol, on a peninsula-styled tee box, the 130yard shot seems easy. Just clear the water, don’t go left or right either out of bounds or in some difficult grass and don’t go long...and it’s not even the course’s signature shot. A course that is still rising from improvements ranging from tee-to-green cart paths to leveling tee boxes, Tierra del Sol’s signature hole is the 400-plus yard No. 5, a par 4 with water along the right and out of bounds on the left. Catching the wind on this hole could turn it into a bogey or worse in no time at all. Baffin Bay Seafood Company offers relaxing dining by the sea While it may be a little farther than most restau- brownies with rants, the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, located ice cream or Winter Texan Friends York in Rivera, is certainly worth the effort to get there. New Come and visit us at Baffin Bay and be prepared for a unique The restaurant sits right on the coast of Baffin Bay, a well-known fishing spot for black drum, redfish and speckled trout. It can also be a good spot for birders as roseate spoonbills can often be spotted in the area during their migratory stays. The bay borders the King Ranch and the Kenedy Ranch, so the possibility of seeing wildlife is good, including deer, javalinas, Nilgai, and smaller mammals like raccoons. One of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu is black drum ribs, usually served with hand-breaded onion rings. The Baffin Bay Seafood Company may just be the only restaurant to serve these tasty ribs fried with cornmeal. They are delicious! Especially with their homemade tartar sauce made with special secret ingredients. They offer other tasty sides, such as the grilled vegetables with onions and mushrooms. In addition to the black drum ribs, we tried the grilled and fried drum, which were both delicious. We just had to sample the fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. Both are very good, and my personal favorite was the big, plump grilled shrimp with a delicious fresh-catch taste. My husband, the gumbo expert in the family, said their gumbo is great! We also had oysters on the half shell and fried oysters. Steaks and chicken are also available for those who aren’t in the mood for a great seafood dinner. Save room for their delicious desserts! cheesecake. Patrons Rick and Mary Ann had come from San Antonio to try the black drum ribs they had heard about and they said they really enjoyed them. Linda, a local, said the drum ribs are so good they don’t need any kind of sauce to complement their delicious flavor. She loves the ribs and the Baffin Bay Seafood Company is the only place she knows that serves them. Greg, another local, said his favorite by far is the frog legs. “I like to come on Mondays when frog legs are the special,” he said. A trip to the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, combined with a sightseeing trip to the King Ranch, might just be unbeatable. Winter Texan resorts may want to organize a dinner trip for their residents. If a busload is going, please call 361-297-5174 and let them know in advance how many are coming. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 1294 CR 2360 E on the coastline

The spirit of Christmas often brings a desire to share good fortune with those who are less fortunate or those who are experiencing great difficulties in their lives. While there are many such organizations, one that does a great deal of service for children struggling with cancer in the Rio Grande Valley is the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic located in McAllen. In 2001, it was realized there was a critical need for a children’s cancer and hematology clinic in the Rio Grande Valley. Victoria Martinez Guerra, Director of Development, at the center says before that time, children with cancer needing treatment were forced to travel to Corpus Christi, San Antonio or Houston to get treatments. The travel disrupted the families’ lives, forcing parents to leave their jobs and frequently creating a financial hardship where less money was coming in while travel costs such as gasoline, food and shelter for family members grew. The hardship of being absent from other family members including small children several days a week created additional stress not to mention the discomfort endured by the sick child while traveling, who was already in a weakened condition. The Vannie E. Cook Foundation, which has been operating in the Rio Grande Valley for the past 40 years worked to find a solution to the problem that would keep children with cancer at home where they could have family support. But to do that, there was a need for a full-time, comprehensive pediatric cancer center to be located in the Valley. The clinic had to be able to offer state-ofthe-art treatment for children with cancer and other serious blood diseases. To accomplish this goal an alliance was created between Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology

Clinic in Houston. The Vannie E. Cook Children’s Cancer and Hematology in McAllen was born. Since opening its doors in 2001, approximately 9500 patients have received 83,000 outpatient treatments where they have an appointment that lasts from a few minutes to six hours, but they go home the same day. The clinic has four doctors on staff and two are present at all times. The center is the only facility in the Rio Grande Valley offering 24-hour service seven days a week. There is a staff of 15 highly-trained professionals operating the different medical services offered by the clinic. If not in the clinic, the other two doctors may be visiting other hospitals to consult with newly diagnosed patients or those who need hospitalization. Martinez-Guerra said doctors work closely with Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, Rio Grande Regional Hospital, Valley Baptist Hospital, Knapp Medical Center and Edinburg Children’s Hospital. While there are other hospitals in the area, most See CENTER pg. 22

do not have the staff to help children with cancer, so they are transferred to other local hospitals that do. The cost of nurses trained to administer children’s chemotherapy treatments are too expensive for smaller hospitals. Martinez-Guerra said the clinic receives about 580 new patients from across the Rio Grande Valley each year. About 80 are brand new diagnoses. There are about 6,900 outpatient treatments annually with an average of 40 patients coming for treatments daily, or 1,270 patients treated annually. The clinic has a weight room for measurements, another room for blood work, a highly equipped laboratory with the same modern equipment that would be found in

the hospitals in the big cities. Blood work is analyzed with immediate results, so the doctors know if treatments are working or if adjustments need to be made. The clinic has chemo stations where children stay during their treatments. And there are two procedure rooms where minor procedures that do not require a child to be fully sedated can be performed. In addition to the clinic, the center offers psychosocial support for families dealing with cancer. There is long term survivor support, a cancer genetics clinic and a childhood cancer prevention program aimed at discovering the inci-

dence of cancer along the border. Martinez-Guerra said it is unfortunate but statistically Hispanic children have a lower survival rate worldwide and research is being done to determine why. All patients who come to the clinic are treated regardless of their ability to pay. Martinez-Guerra said it takes about $2 million a year in donations to accomplish this goal. Anyone wishing to donate to the center may send donations to 101 W. Expressway 83, McAllen, Texas, 78503. To find out more about the center or to take a tour, call Martinez-Guerra at (956) 687-9840.

The Rio Grande Valley Children’s Chorus (RGVCC) is a non-profit chorale group made up of children ages 7-16 from across the Rio Grande Valley. Recently they were front acts at The Voice of Hope Concert for the Haiyan victims and the Tom Booth concert of the Sacred Heart Parish. The group has also traveled to Dallas to sing at the mass during the Couples for Christ 2014 National Convention, as well as to Rockport, Texas to participate in the annual Marian pilgrimage and Santacruzan at the Schoenstatt Shrine. The concert will also feature special appearances by Santa Claus and that cuddly as a cactus and charming as an eel, mean old Mr. Grinch. To celebrate Weslaco’s 99th birthday, elected officials and volunteers will unpack the city’s 75th birthday time capsule from 1994. The event will take place at the Weslaco Museum under the direction of Executive Director Sara Walker at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10. Dec. 10 marks Weslaco’s birth, when the first lots were sold in 1919 to form the town center. The Weslaco 100 Committee, appointed by the Weslaco City Commission, has been tasked with planning events to celebrate the upcoming centennial year. Volunteers assisting Mayor David Suarez and City Commissioners will be members of the Weslaco 100 Committee and the Weslaco Museum Board of Directors. Walker will have cotton gloves for each participant to wear as they carefully remove items from the time capsule that has been buried in front of the Weslaco Library’s computer lab for 24 years. “Until the capsule is opened, we won’t know how well the letters and artifacts inside have survived,” Walker said. “With advice from our archivists, we’ll gently handle each item so that it can be catalogued, photographed, and prepared for display in January 2019.” The public is welcome to discover the time capsule treasures for themselves at the Weslaco Museum throughout the month of January. Operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The year-long 100th birthday celebration will culminate with festivities Dec. 6-10, 2019.

The Festival of Lights has turned the small City of Hidalgo into the Valley’s biggest, glowing Christmasland just in time for the Christmas season. The lights are now on display every night through the month of December. The city transforms from a mid-size town to a Christmas Wonderland as it puts up more than 500 huge light displays totaling more than five million lights. Narrated guided tours of the city’s festive light displays start at city hall and continue through the month of December – with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas day, the day of the Ramon Ayala Posada (Dec. 20), and New Year’s Eve. Hidalgo City Hall is the hub of the festival and is located at 704 E. Ramon Ayala Dr. (formerly Texano Dr.), in Hidalgo. On these grounds you will find a stage with nightly entertainment, Santa’s Cottage where you can take pictures with Santa, a carnival, food vendors, an artisans market, and the starting point for guided tours through the displays. Trolley and Train Tours There are two tour options available, one that is the tour only and another that is a dinner concert trolley tour package. Here, visitors will take a narrated tour aboard a train or trolley and learn a little about the history of Hidalgo. Trolley or train tour tickets may be purchased for $5 at the ticket booths located in the city hall parking lot. The tours begin at 6 p.m. each night and run until approximately

10 p.m., depending on attendance. However, the best option is the Dinner & Entertainment Package that includes dinner, VIP seating for the evening’s performance on the Christmas Stage and a narrated tour of the lights by train. The cost for the package starts at $12 per person. Choose from dinner package times of 5:15 p.m. or 6:15 p.m. The dinner tours include a roast beef meal complete with musical entertainment. The dinner takes place in front of City Hall from Dec. 1-19 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seating is limited, so early reservations are recommended. Proceeds benefit local non-profit organizations. Call (956) 843-5311 for more information or to make reservations. Of course, Santa will also be in attendance from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 1 to Dec. 23 in the Hidalgo City Hall Courtyard. Pictures are $15 for one or $20 for two. Ramon Ayala Posada The annual Ramon Ayala Posada, hosted by five-time Grammy award-winning artist Ramon Ayala, will be held Dec. 20. According to the city, this is one of the largest single day events in the Rio Grande Valley. Known as the “King of the Accordion,” Ayala has hosted this free concert for years. At the posada, the City of Hidalgo gives away toys to more than 10,000 low-income children. The city and local businesses team up to provide these toys. The posada includes a several top artists who will perform free to the public.
